When it comes to exploring new horizons, the best travel agency in Hong Kong can be your go-to guide.

As a passionate traveler, I understand the importance of a well-planned journey.

Therefore, I am committed to helping you navigate through the myriad of travel agencies available.

In this comprehensive guide, I’ll be sharing insights into what sets the top agencies apart.

Stay tuned, as we embark on a journey to discover your ideal travel partner.

Table of Contents

Understanding Travel Agencies

Before we begin, let’s get a solid understanding of travel agencies , their roles, and why they’re so vital for a memorable travel experience.

What is a Travel Agency?

A travel agency is a business that plans and arranges travel itineraries for individuals, groups, or businesses. They take the hassle out of trip planning, doing the heavy lifting, so you don’t have to. From booking flights and hotels to organizing local tours and even securing restaurant reservations, a competent travel agency handles all the details of your trip.

What is a Travel Agency

What Do Travel Agencies Do?

Travel agencies play multiple roles. They act as intermediaries between travelers and the vast world of travel services. And they leverage their extensive knowledge, expertise, and network to provide you with the best possible travel experience .

Also, they ensure your itinerary is efficient, your accommodations are comfortable, and your local excursions are captivating. They also manage any unforeseen circumstances, such as travel delays or cancellations, ensuring minimal disruption to your journey.

Why Use a Travel Agency?

In an era where DIY travel planning is just a few clicks away, one might wonder why a travel agency is necessary. The truth is, while planning a trip on your own can be exciting, it can also be overwhelming and time-consuming.

A travel agency offers an unrivaled depth of service. They not only curate personalized travel experiences based on your preferences but also provide support during your trip. With a travel agency, you get the peace of mind that comes with knowing you have an expert watching your back, ready to help you navigate any issues that might come up during your journey.

As an experienced traveler , I can’t emphasize enough the importance of having a reliable travel agency. A case in point from my own travels is a trip to the Outback I undertook last year. I was left stranded due to a sudden flight cancellation. My travel agency not only arranged for an alternative flight but also managed to book a comfortable local inn for the night at a moment’s notice. This experience highlighted for me the value a proficient travel agency brings to the table.

Criteria for Evaluating Travel Agencies

Choosing a travel agency is like selecting a trustworthy friend who will guide you through your journey. It’s not a decision to be taken lightly. So, what should you consider when selecting a travel agency? Here are five critical criteria to guide your decision-making process .

Expertise in the Industry

One of the first things to look for in a travel agency is their level of expertise. How long have they been in the business? Do they specialize in specific types of travel, like adventure travel, luxury travel, or business trips? An agency with a wealth of experience and a clear focus will be able to offer you unique insights and suggestions that can enhance your travel experience.

For instance, during my backpacking trip to Europe, the travel agency I had chosen, known for its expertise in budget travel, suggested some offbeat yet affordable destinations. It added an unexpected richness to my journey without straining my budget.

Variety of Services Offered

A great travel agency should be a one-stop-shop for all your travel needs. Look for agencies that offer a wide range of services, from booking airfare and accommodation to arranging tours, transfers, and even visa assistance. The more comprehensive the services, the less you need to worry about, allowing you to focus on enjoying your trip.

Quality of Customer Service

Travel plans can sometimes go awry. Flights get delayed; reservations can fall through. In such instances, responsive and reliable customer service is crucial. A good travel agency will be there for you around the clock, ready to solve any problems that may arise. Be sure to check their availability: Can you reach them outside typical business hours? Do they have a local number you can call while you’re abroad?

Price and Value for Money

Traveling can be a significant investment, so getting the most out of your money is essential. The best travel agencies provide an excellent balance of cost and value, ensuring that you get the best experience for your budget. They should be transparent about all costs involved, providing an all-inclusive quote without any hidden charges.

Customer Reviews and Ratings

Finally, don’t forget to check out what other travelers have to say. Online reviews and ratings can provide an insight into the experiences of others with the agency. Look for consistent positive feedback about their services, responsiveness, and ability to deliver as promised.

Making the Choice: Tips for Choosing the Best Agency for You

Having an array of choices is a double-edged sword. On one hand, you’re blessed with options. On the other hand, it can be overwhelming. Here are some practical tips to help you make an informed decision when choosing a travel agency that suits your needs.

Define Your Travel Needs and Preferences

Before you even begin the hunt, take a moment to outline your travel needs and preferences. Do you prefer guided tours or free exploration? Are you a budget traveler or a luxury enthusiast? Do you seek adventure or relaxation? The clearer your expectations, the easier it is to identify an agency that aligns with your travel style.

Do Your Research

In this digital age, every bit of information is at your fingertips. Use this to your advantage. Dig into the websites of potential travel agencies, explore their offerings, and read up on their client testimonials and reviews. Pay attention to their expertise and specializations.

Ask for Recommendations

There’s nothing like a first-hand account to give you an accurate picture of a travel agency’s services. Reach out to friends, family, or colleagues who’ve traveled recently. Ask about their experiences and whether they’d recommend their travel agency. This can provide valuable insights that might not be readily available online.

Compare Prices and Services

Once you have a shortlist of potential agencies, compare their prices and services. Look at the inclusions and exclusions in their travel packages. Be sure to factor in the quality of services, not just the cost. Cheapest isn’t always the best.

Consider the Agency’s Reputation

Finally, look at the agency’s reputation in the industry. A travel agency that’s been in business for a long time, has positive customer reviews, and has won industry awards is likely a safe bet.

Your neighbourhood guide to Mong Kok

When we think of Hong Kong’s most iconic districts, Mong Kok is right up there with Central, Causeway Bay , and Tsim Sha Tsui . With its pedestrian-friendly streets lined with market stalls, snack shops, and stores selling everything under the sun, Mong Kok is a shopper’s paradise on par with Myeongdong in Seoul and Harajuku in Tokyo.

While Mong Kok can be something of a sensory overload—a far cry from the peaceful flower market and bird garden in neighbouring Prince Edward —it’s almost always worth braving the crowds. Whether it’s a delicious snack, the perfect smudge-proof mascara, or the exact vintage toy you were on the hunt for, there’s always something to be discovered in Mong Kok—read on for our favourite things to do, see, and eat around Hong Kong’s “busy corner.”

Check out a piece of Hong Kong history

Perched on a junction on the border of Mong Kok, this 90-year-old shophouse is a prime example of a pre-war ke lau (騎樓; tenement building) that incorporates both Western and Chinese design elements. Featuring a curved façade, granite columns, decorative urn-shaped balustrades, and deep verandas, Lui Seng Chun cuts an imposing figure in Mong Kok’s architectural landscape.

The four-storey building was used as a shophouse by the Lui family, who operated a traditional Chinese medicine clinic on the ground floor and occupied the upstairs quarters. In the early 2000s, the Lui family donated the building to the government, and it was later converted into a clinic for Hong Kong Baptist University’s School of Chinese Medicine. While guided tours are normally available to the public, they have been temporarily suspended due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Get your game face on

Relive (or just live) your teen years at Game Zone, one of Hong Kong’s best-known games arcades . Hidden in the bowels of one of Mong Kok’s many malls, this is an old-school arcade where you’ll find a treasure trove of games in a cloud of cigarette smoke. Take your pick from rhythm games like Taiko no Tatsujin and Wacca or classics like Mario Kart , as well as dance games such as Danz Base and Dance Evolution Arcade .

Make some furry friends

Cat cafés are generally a bit hit-or-miss—some are more like cafés with a shop cat, while others are a little cramped for the feline populations they house. Lay your concerns to rest at Cat Jungle, a spacious and clean cat café with a giant outdoor terrace (for human guests only, of course!) and a well-behaved crew of adorable kitties. And best of all, many of the cats are available for adoption—which we’re sure is welcome news for anyone who has formed bonds with cat café moggies in the past.

Street markets

While Mong Kok has plenty of malls, the most popular shopping attractions here are the huge, sprawling street markets. The most famous one by far is Ladies’ Market , which occupies the southern half of Tung Choi Street. Despite its name, the market doesn’t exclusively stock products for female customers—the wide range of items available include Hong Kong-themed souvenirs, knock-off bags and shoes, novelty toys and gadgets, and much more.

Continue your retail adventure by wandering off to the nearby Sneaker Street (a.k.a. Fa Yuen Street) for a thoroughly hypebeast-worthy shopping expedition, or to the Goldfish Street (the northern section of Tung Choi Street) to check out the massive selection of aquarium-related goods and aquatic pets for sale.

618 Shanghai Street

One of our favourite places to discover local brands and pick up quirky or handmade items is 618 Shanghai Street , a revitalised shopping centre similar to PMQ, Tai Kwun, or The Mills. Though the complex itself is new, the façade was painstakingly preserved from Hong Kong’s longest row of tong lau shophouses. Inside, you’ll find a well-curated selection of local independent shops—many of which stock “Made in Hong Kong” products like Camel flasks and Twemco flip clocks—and a surprisingly good choice of Southeast Asian eats.

Zoo Records

This petite CD and record store is a veritable treasure trove for vinyl fans with a taste for alternative music, with everything from indie darlings like Japanese Breakfast, Lucy Dacus, and The Shins to classics like David Bowie, Nirvana, and Primal Scream. You’ll also find a good selection of old-school and modern Asian artists, from every Chinese parent’s favourite singer, Teresa Teng, to Hong Kong noise-rockers The Yours. Even trendy coloured vinyl records—like the neon green version of Garbage’s latest, No Gods No Masters—are priced reasonably, providing a welcome change of pace from Hong Kong’s typically steep mark-up for imported limited-edition goods.

Film photography buffs and newbies alike will be well-catered to at Showa. Trendy local malls

Mong Kok has no shortage of local malls teeming with cosmetics stores, odd speciality shops, and boutiques. Argyle Centre is a favourite among bargain-hunting teens, which is similar to Island Beverly and Laforet in Causeway Bay in its representation of local “cube stores” offering the latest threads from Korea and Japan.

Once you’re done browsing Argyle Centre’s 14 floors of shops, you can take the footbridge to get to T.O.P. (This is Our Place). With fast-fashion brands like Chuu and WeGo Tokyo nestled alongside cheap and cheerful accessories stores and Hong Kong’s only Popeyes Chicken , this shopping centre is definitely geared towards a more youthful, K-pop-loving crowd.

For Asian and Western beauty products, there’s no beating Langham Place . You’ll find a multitude of makeup and skincare offerings here, ranging from Korean road-shop brands like Etude House and Innisfree, but Langham Place’s wide range covers more upscale outlets like Nars, Dermalogica, and Caudalie, as well.

Dine like you’re in an old-school dai pai dong at Ladies Street Sik Faan Co., a sprawling Mong Kok eatery serving up elevated DPD classics—think thick-cut prawn toast with black truffle ($28 per piece), crispy roast squab ($98), black pepper pork knuckles ($148), and “wind sand” Bombay duck fish ($88). In the same vein as Lau Haa Hot Pot in Causeway Bay, Ladies Street Sik Faan Co. is a single restaurant done up to look like a retro cooked food market (beer bowls and all!), complete with metal shutters and Chinese signage to simulate the presence of other businesses.

Mong kok guide: where to go and what to do.

What's On

Exploring what this city has to offer…

When I moved to the 852 just a few short months ago, I was a little surprised when my partner told me where we were going to be living. I had no idea where Mong Kok was, but I’ve discovered it’s a pretty cool place to be, with so many interesting things on offer. With plenty of shopping and dining out options, some great bars and a couple of fun things to see and do , Mong Kok is the place to be in my opinion! Sure it may be a little hectic, but isn’t that what living in Honkers is all about?! So come on mamas, head on over to Mong Kok and check out just a few of my favourite places…

What To Eat and Drink:

Egg Waffles – Or Gai Daan Zai

You may have seen this street food all over HK, but in Mong Kok, I find that you can hardly walk two steps without finding a street vendor selling this local delight. These sweet ‘n’ crispy little guys are the perfect pick me up after a long day pounding the pavements! Plus, your kiddos will love peeling apart each waffle… who says you can’t play with your food?

Find them all over Mong Kok!

The Ale Project

After a long day navigating the packed streets of MK, you may be in need of a beer come 5pm ( or earlier if the kiddos are running wild… ). The Ale Project is one of the only craft beer focused bars in Kowloon and has an extensive selection of beers and ales to choose from ( local brews and selected imports ). I also saw an array of tasty looking bar snacks and sandwiches coming from the kitchen, so it’s the perfect spot for lining your stomach and having a few nibbles!

Find it at 15 Hak Po Street, Mong Kok, Hong Kong.  Closest MTR Exit – Mong Kok, Exit D2.

Knockbox Coffee

For serious coffee fans, Knockbox is the place to come to help fuel your Mong Kok adventure. The team behind the cafe are truly passionate about coffee and want to show it off in its truest forms ( so no syrups available here! ). On Friday nights, they even host a “coffee premiere” where local coffee enthusiasts gather and taste unlimited brewed coffee from 6.30 – 10pm.

Find it at  21 Hak Po Street, Mong Kok, Hong Kong.  Closest MTR Exit – Mong Kok, Exit E2.

One Dim Sum

My favourite local dim sum spot, you can find me here at some point most weekends. My top picks at any Dim Sum place will always be char siu bao and siu mai, but I can never bring myself to leave without having at least one egg custard bun ( no matter how full I am ). Be sure to get there early though, the doors may open at 10am, but there’s always a queue!

Find it at Shop 1 & 2, G/F, Kenwood Mansion, 15 Playing Field Road, Prince Edward.  Closest MTR Exit – Prince Edward, Exit A.

Afternoon Tea at Alibi, Cordis Hotel

For a refreshing change of pace in chaotic Mong Kong, Afternoon Tea at Alibi is the ideal choice. The picnic inspired afternoon tea is served in a traditional wicker hamper and offers up sophisticated, modern twists on the traditional faves, such as mini crab cake burgers and foie gras pâté with bourbon bacon jam on freshly baked French baguettes. Perfect for those mama and daughter dates!

Find it at Level 5, Cordis Hotel, 555 Shanghai Street, Mong Kok, Hong Kong.  Closest MTR Exit – Mong Kok, Exit C3.

The Garage Bar

Formerly The Backyard Bar, this outdoor area was recently revamped and transformed into The Garage Bar, an outdoor food truck and craft beer destination. Try out the Ninja Lobster Roll and wash it down with an ice cold Big Wave Bay, by the Hong Kong Beer Co., or choose three different labels and create your own beer flight!

Find it at Level L, Cordis Hotel, 555 Shanghai Street, Mong Kok, Hong Kong.  Closest MTR Exit – Mong Kok, Exit C3.

Perched on the top floor of the Nathan 726, Sky offers up a killer view of downtown Mong Kok. Enjoy their high-end French cuisine and be sure to sip on some quality cocktails, away from the busy streets below. Definitely a new date night option!

Find it at 25/F, 726 Nathan Road Building, 724-726 Nathan Road, Mong Kok, Hong Kong.  Closest MTR Exit – Mong Kok, A1.

What To Do:

The Ladies Market

I could hardly write about Mong Kok and not mention the famous Ladies Market. The 1km stretch is jam packed with stalls selling clothing, accessories, toys, electrical items, souvenirs and so much more! It’s always bustling, but I love to go at night when the streets are lit up and the place really comes alive. My favourite buy from the market is my silk dressing gown, perfect for lounging around and feeling all fancy! Check it out and see what wonders you come away with…

Find it at Tung Choi Street, Mong Kok, Hong Kong.  Closest MTR Exit – Mong Kok, Exit B3.

The Langham Place Shopping Mall

If you’re in need of a break from the streets of Mong Kok, find refuge ( and air con ) in the colossal Langham Place shopping mall. Containing over 300 shops, with international brands as well as local independent labels, Langham Place has everything you need under one roof. Also, housing a cinema and an array of eateries, it’s the perfect spot to know just incase the rain decides to pour! Mama tip: if you’re looking to change bubba’s diaper or need a place to nurse, cross the street to Cordis at Langham Place.

Find it at 8 Argyle St, Mong Kok, Hong Kong.  Closest MTR Exit – Mong Kok, Exit C3.

Flower Market Road

One of my favourite spots in all of Hong Kong is Flower Market Road ( although still busy! ). It’s a welcome respite from the extreme hustle and bustle of the Mong Kok streets. Located on the Prince Edward side, expect to find streets lined with shops selling all varieties of flowers and plants at very reasonable prices. Perfect for a Sunday afternoon stroll after filling your stomachs with dim sum, I rarely pay a visit without coming away with ( yet another ) houseplant.

Find it at Flower Market Road, Mong Kok, Hong Kong. C losest MTR Exit – Prince Edward, Exit B2.

Goldfish Market

Another MK wonder. Goldfish Market is an entire street dedicated to selling, you guessed it – fish! As well as the huge variety of live fish available ( and every imaginable accessory ), the market bizarrely also has small pets such as hamsters, frogs and turtles. If your kiddos are ready for the responsibility of a small pet, this is the perfect place to take them! Even if you’re just visiting Hong Kong ( or have no desire to buy a pet fish ), the market is a weird and wonderful place to explore in this city of ours!

Find it at Tung Choi Street North (Goldfish Street), Mong Kok, Hong Kok.  Closest MTR Exit – Mong Kok, Exit B3.

Me and George

Hidden in the depths of the Ladies Market, “Me and Gee” is one of the cheapest second hand stores around. This diamond in the rough is famous for its racks of Japanese and Korean vintage clothes at bargain prices. You may need to dig a little to come away with the good stuff, but part of the fun is in the hunt!

Find it at 64 Tung Choi Street, Mong Kok, Hong Kong.  Closest MTR Exit – Mong Kok, Exit B3.

MOKO Shopping Mall

Another must-know haven in Mong Kok is the MOKO shopping mall. Shop ‘til you drop at the huge variety of major brands on offer and then feast to your heart’s content at any of the many amazing restaurants!

Find it at 193 Prince Edward Road West, Mong Kok, Hong Kong.  Closest MTR Exit – Mong Kok, Exit B3.

Sneaker Street

If running about Kowloon all day has your feet gettin’ a little sore, Sneaker Street is the place to head to get some new kicks. As the name would suggest, it’s an entire street offering up pretty much every sportswear and sneaker brand out there and is a must visit for any mama who loves her comfy shoes!

Find it at Fa Yuen Street, Mong Kok, Hong Kong.  Closest MTR Exit – Mong Kok, Exit D2.

Mong Kok guide: The best places to eat, drink, and explore in the trendy neighbourhood

Even if you’re not based in Hong Kong, there’s a chance you might have heard of Mong Kok. After all, it’s home to the famous night markets. Hong Kong ranks among one of the world’s busiest and densely packed cities and there’s no other place to see that in full view than Mong Kok. Read our neighbourhood guide to Mong Kok so you don’t find yourself lost amid the hustle and bustle.

Mong Kok is always busy. It’s unsurprisingly one of Hong Kong’s most popular neighbourhoods. A literal paradise for shoppers on a budget, the district is loved for its affordable eateries and shops as well as its lively vibe. So, whether you’re looking for the trendiest makeup or clothing, a must-have souvenir item, the latest tech, or the most delicious street food, you’ll find it in Mong Kok.

Like most megacities that have an area that represents the youth, such as Hongdae in South Korea or Harajuku in Japan, it’s Mong Kok for Hong Kong. So much so that “MK fashion” became a style trend, referring to the type of style you’ll spot in Mong Kok. Yes, the place is full of youthful energy, but people of all ages (and walks of life) visit this hood. We created this handy neighbourhood guide so you can curate what to eat, drink, and do in Mong Kok.

Make sure you bookmark this!

Wan Chai guide: The best places to eat, drink, and explore in the vibrant neighbourhood

Your ultimate guide to exploring Mong Kok

Where to eat.

Start off your day with a hearty breakfast at Hui Wing Kee . It’s a long-standing noodle shop that sells oyster porridge among other breakfast staples. A meal here costs under HKD 100! What a treat, right? For those still looking for similar affordable munches, Mong Kok truly has so much to offer from Kam Wah Cafe to Nam Kee Spring Roll Noodle .

For a combination of wallet-friendly and delicious food, No Money So Lonely is a favourite. The trendy restaurant offers a fusion of Thai and Western dishes. But it also has vegetarian options! Thanks to its location inside a mall, it’s become a popular lunch stop for shoppers in Mong Kok. Another go-to hang-out spot is Graceland , which prides itself on its range of Southern American snacks. Think, crispy, salty and fried servings of burgers, hot dogs, chicken wings, and chicken tenders. This is the place to be if you want those extra carbs!

View this post on Instagram   A post shared by Graceland: Soul Food Deli (@gracelandmk)

Those looking for a more refined setting can head to any of Cordis’ dining establishments. How can anyone say no to Michelin-starred Ming Court ? It earned its reputation for serving authentic Cantonese cuisine. We also can’t leave out The Place , especially for a weekend meal. It’s the perfect choice for a ‘spoil me’ treat because of its buffet  and all-day dining option.

Dignity Kitchen deserves a special shout-out. They not only brought Singapore’s famed hawker food (and cuisine) to Hong Kong, but they also employed differently-abled and disadvantaged to run their stalls. Savour the delicious servings of Hainanese chicken rice , nasi lemak, bak kut teh (pork rib dish) and more—all made with extra love.

Did you really go to Mong Kok without having hot pot? You’ll be spoiled for choice in the neighbourhood but Akune Wagyu Tachikui Yakinikumis e wins the hearts of many. In addition to serving Japanese-style barbecue, the Japanese wooden sliding doors and red lanterns make diners feel as if they’re dining right in Japan. What’s more, here you get to relish the mouthwatering cuts of A4 and A5 Wagyu beef from Kagoshima.

View this post on Instagram   A post shared by 念川居 Chuan Palace (@chuanpalace_moko)

Need an extra kick in your food? Chuan Palace is among the best when it comes to Sichuan cuisine and dim sum. Sichuan food is known for its spicy dishes, and you know you’ll get the best at Chuan Palace as almost all the ingredients come from Sichuan. The spicy sauce is even homemade! And dare we mention, a visit to Mong Kok isn’t complete without trying street food ! From cheung fun (rice noodle roll) to siu mai and stinky tofu, make sure to leave some room for these!

Where to drink

Drinking in Mong Kok is divided into alcoholics and non-alcoholics. While the neighbourhood certainly has its fair share of bars, it’s really the beer joints that stand out. Who can forget the award-winning taproom, The Madhouse ? They serve world-class craft beers and local brews in addition to finger-licking snacks. Meanwhile, The Ale Project has received legendary status in Hong Kong. After all, they’re the first craft beer-focused taproom in Kowloon. Their humble beginnings have grown, now cultivating a local cult following. Stylish Moonkok is also at the top of our list when it comes to craft beer. Good food is an added plus.

View this post on Instagram   A post shared by The Ale Project (@thealeproject)

Elsewhere, Cordis’ Alibi – Wine Dine Be Social is great for those looking for bespoke cocktails and wines. It’s the place to be for pre-dinner drinks or after work hours. Cafe Hachiko might have the word ‘cafe’ in its name but don’t be fooled, as this is a Japanese wine bar by nature. Sure, you can enjoy some cafe-style food during the day but at night the place lights up as a bar.

Mong Kok has plenty on the table for non-alcoholics too. Turn a corner here and you’ll find a coffee shop or cafe that you can easily drop by. Knockbox Coffee Company is already a well-known name in the city and Mong Kok has its own branch. For something a little more unique, we recommend The Hut . It’s a garden-themed cafe that gives off a rustic vibe.

Where to shop

The word ‘shopping’ has become synonymous with Mong Kok, especially for affordable shopping. No matter what you’re looking for, we’re 99.9 per cent sure you can find it in Mong Kok. Souvenirs? There’s plenty to choose from Tung Choi Street . We recommend haggling to make sure you get the cheapest price!

For all things hip and trendy, head over to Argyle Centre . You’ll find Korean-style clothing, skincare, beauty products, tech accessories, and vintage stores . It’s like a maze inside with all the options available! Techies and gadget lovers must check out Sino Centre as it has everything from laptops to gaming accessories and video games.

Sneakerheads aren’t left out as well because they even have a dedicated place just for them: Sneaker Street . There are rows of sneaker brands and outlets along this stretch of road. Then, CTMA Centre is perfect for anime and comic lovers while photography buffs can’t miss Showa . If you aren’t looking for anything specific then we recommend going to malls such as T.O.P , Langham Place , and MOKO to browse around.

No matter what age you are, it’s never too late to have fun! Game Zone is possibly the city’s most well-known arcade and it’s located right at the heart of Mong Kok. And because it has a reputation, you can expect the place to be packed. Bring out your best dance moves in games such as Danz Base or Dance Evolution Arcade.

If you’re looking to avoid the crowds, then Namco is an alternative. The vibe here is a little more “relaxed” as you can find more gacha games rather than usual arcade games. You can still play favourites such Pac-Man Smash Air Hockey and Taiko Master.

On the subject of games, there are also a lot of broad game cafes in Mong Kok. It’s exactly what it’s called: a cafe that offers broad games. You can play jenja, pictionary, or monopoly while munching on comfort food at Odd Broadgame Bar & Cafe , Station 3 Cafe , and Jolly Thinkers.

Culture buffs can’t miss Lui Seng Chun , a tong lau shophouse in the neighbourhood and one of the few that still remains. The structure is a Declared Monument and boasts a Chinese-Western style design. Today, it’s used as a Chinese medicine centre but the ground floor houses an herbal tea shop and exhibition space for visitors.

After a long day, when it’s time for some relaxation, pamper yourselves at Chuan Spa , a five-star luxury hotel spa. Choose from a range of treatments, massages, and facials all inspired by the five elements and traditional Chinese medicine. You deserve it!

The Best Things to Do in Mong Kok, Hong Kong

hong thai travel agency mong kok

Mong Kok, which in Cantonese means ‘crowded corner’, is true to its name – it’s one of the busiest districts in Hong Kong. From seeking out antiques to trying stinky tofu, here is our list of the 11 best things to do in Mong Kok.

Treat yourself to new kicks on sneakers street.

The southernmost section of Fa Yuen Street is known as Sneakers Street, thanks to its abundance of shoe shops. Here you’ll find the hottest styles, as well as rare and limited-edition lines from brands including Nike, Adidas and New Balance. In addition to sneakers, there are numerous sportswear stores selling basketball shirts and other merchandise, making this the place to be for sports-loving fashionistas.

Wander along Sai Yeung Choi Street

Sai Yeung Choi is a long, bustling pedestrian street, home to an abundance of shops, malls and restaurants. You will be able to find almost anything you want, from international cosmetics and skin care brands such as Innisfree from Korea and NYX from the USA, to high-tech electronics. Local chain stores Fortress and Broadway sell the latest gadgets, but these can also be found at a fraction of the price at the smaller shops hidden within the labyrinth of office buildings. Don’t pass up the opportunity to check out the restaurants and street stalls selling local delicacies like Taiwanese fried chicken and Hong Kong stir-fried noodles.

Sample street food

Trying local street food is a must on any visit to Hong Kong. In Mong Kok, you can find plenty of street-food stalls scattered on Sai Yeung Choi Street, Dundas Street, Fa Yuen Street and Soy Street. They are not limited to selling traditional Hong Kong-style snacks such as stinky tofu, fish balls, and fish siu mai . Nowadays, you will also find pizza, Thai tea, and even poutine, all at very reasonable prices. If you’re feeling intrepid, be sure to try a food trend taking Hong Kong by storm – cheese cap tea. This intriguing sweet-savoury drink sees cold tea topped with a foamy layer of milk and cream cheese, finished off with a sprinkle of salt.

Score a bargain at Mong Kok’s best markets

As well as being a vital part of everyday life for many Hong Kongers, markets are at the top of the list of things to do in Hong Kong . You’ve come to the right place – Mong Kok is home to many of Hong Kong’s most popular markets . If you are looking to buy some classic Hong Kong souvenirs or perhaps some designer knock offs, then the Ladies’ Market is a must-visit. Though located a little outside of Mong Kok, the Temple Street Night Market is just a short walk away and a shopping hotspot after sundown. Along with having your fortune told, here you can find authentic souvenirs: antiques, jade, clothes, tea-ware, and electronic gadgets are all up for grabs.

Discover emerging artists at the Hong Kong Wall of Fame

Hidden in a quiet corner of Mong Kok is a wall of ever-changing street art. This stretch of wall between Argyle and Bute Street is vibrantly adorned with works by both international and local graffiti artists, with new works constantly appearing. Beginning by the Mong Kok East Rail station and extending for over two blocks, the Hong Kong Wall of Fame should be on the to-do list of any art lovers visiting Mong Kok . Be sure to take a picture of your favourite piece – they may not be there by the time you next visit!

Enjoy a snack at a hidden café

Hong Kong is famous for its astronomical property prices. To save costs, many restaurants have decided to look beyond street level and open on the upper floors of buildings, giving rise to the phenomenon of upstairs cafés. Today you will find some of the city’s cutest cafés hidden within historical buildings away from the hustle and bustle of the street. Among the best is the Hut – an adorable café with three resident cats on the second floor of Cheong Kee House. It mainly serves tea and Japanese snacks, while its decor – styled on a typical Japanese greenhouse – gives patrons a sense of serenity. Also hidden away on the second floor, but this time on Shan Tung Street, Loyi Faateng’s tiled floors and vintage decor create a distinctly retro vibe. It serves up a western menu packed with pizza and pasta dishes, making it a more hearty choice than the Hut.

Shan Tung Street, Mong Kok, Hong Kong

Catch a glimpse of the Goldfish Market

At Tung Choi Street North, also known as the Goldfish Market, you can buy any type of fish your heart desires. Its speciality, however, is (unsurprisingly) goldfish, who stare out from the plastic pouches that hang from the many stalls and store fronts lining the street. Regular pet stores are now beginning to crowd out the goldfish stalls – bringing cats, dogs and rabbits and other pets onto the scene – so swing by and see this curious sight before it disappears!

Shop ’til you drop at Mong Kok’s biggest mall

15-storey Langham Place occupies over 56,000 square metres in the heart of Mong Kok. This mammoth mall is conveniently connected to the Mong Kok MTR, and houses a food court, many high fashion brands and a cinema. The smaller boutique shops are found on the top floors of the mall, with international brands occupying the lower floors. After the excitement of a shopping expedition, renew your strength with a meal at the Bistro Bloom steakhouse or chill out at Sky Bar , both of which are on the top floor. The mall is just as trendy as the fashionable boutiques it houses, with sophisticated interior design and even a glass observation deck at the top, where you can take in views of Mong Kok.

Browse for electronics at the Mongkok Computer Centre

Though not as famous as its Sham Shui Po counterpart, the Mongkok Computer Centre is home to 70 stores selling every electronic good imaginable. Whether you are looking for mobile or tablet accessories, data or charging cables, or perhaps a gaming console, there is a shop for it here. If you’re desperate to upload your holiday snaps, MCC also provides a free fast-speed Wi-Fi zone on the third floor called Cyber Spot so that their shoppers can stay connected.

Sip coffee while making canine pals

This one is for the dog lovers! Ondogdog Cafe, a play on words which in Cantonese roughly translates to ‘silly looking in an endearing way’, is the most charming of dog cafés. Set in a quieter part of Mong Kok, it is home to three Akitas, two Huskies, and a Shiba. To hang out with these cuties, it’ll cost 180 HKD. There are also board games, snacks, and drinks provided, but the focus of this café is really the dogs. The opening times vary, so it’s best to message them on Facebook in advance and reserve a space.

Bute Street Fa Yuen Street Mongkok Hong Kong - Laugh Travel Eat

This is post 26 of 121 in the series “Hong Kong”

Born and bred in Hong Kong – I have finally moved back to my home town after my 12 years stunt as a student in the UK. In a city of 7 million people, living in this metropolis is kind of like living in a huge kaleidoscope and you never know what you might see next.

There are a lot of misconceptions and preconception about Hong Kong as a city, as a local who had moved away and back, I want to expose Hong Kong’s beauties to you all through my eyes.

One of the busiest areas in Hong Kong, Mongkok – aka busy corner – is where the best shopping and eating happens. It’s where I go shopping and eating since I was ten and arguably my favourite place in Hong Kong. I’m literally there once or twice a week. Also spelled as Mong Kok, a lot of people think it’s too crowded to visit, but I can’t get enough of this place. Whether it’s market, food, shopping, or just to soak in the vibe, Mongkok has it all!

From the Prince Edward MTR station to Yau Ma Tei MTR station, the entire area is my ‘hood and I’m excited to finally share all my favourite spots and shops! In fact, you are likely to find me there on a weekly basis!

In a nutshell, Things to do in Mongkok:

  • Mong Kok markets
  • Shopping for cheap clothes in Hong Kong
  • Street food and bubble tea galore

This is going to be a long post, so use the tables of content below to navigate:

Transport Mongkok

Skywalk along argyle street Mongkok Hong Kong - Laugh Travel Eat

Mongkok is the center of Kowloon in a geographic sense, and there are many ways to get there. You can reach it via the MTR Tuen Wan Line (Red) at Mong Kok station, but don’t confuse it with Mong Kok East Rail station on the East Rail line.

There are no ends of buses and minivan that goes to Mong Kok, however, if you are unfamiliar with the transport system and the neighborhood, I suggest taking the MTR as there are many stops.

Mong Kok market

Mongkok has some of the best markets in Hong Kong. You get specialty markets, your regular markets, and the first hawker market in Hong Kong! Without further ado, here are all of them in order from North to South!

Flowers Market

red flower macro flower market Mongkok Hong Kong - Laugh Travel Eat

On an aptly named street called Flower Market Street, this was originally a wholesale market in the 70s. During the 90s, it became popular with the average consumers and now sells to both. It’s lovely to stroll along the beautiful flowers and potted plants, and one of my favourite café/dessert places inlocated here as well! It’s right next to the Birds Market, so it’s really two birds with one stone to visit the two together!

Opening times: 9:30 – 19:30

Birds Garden Hong Kong

birds market inner street Mongkok Hong Kong - Laugh Travel Eat

Also known as the Yuen Po Birds Market, this is a place dedicated to the Chinese song bird tradition. It is a bit of a dying hobby, popular only among the older generation.

blue parrot birds marketMongkok Hong Kong - Laugh Travel Eat

Song bird tradition has a long history in China where song birds are kept in wooden cages and, well, sing.Although the market itself is long standing, it was relocated to the current location in the 1990s due to re-development of the site (it is now Langham place). However, all the shops inside are still the ones from years before. If you are here early enough, you’ll see people walking their birds!

Opening times: 7:00 – 20:00

Ladies market Mongkok

ladies-market-mong-kok-hong-kong-laugh-travel-eat

Probably the most famous market on the list, Ladies market is the first government-sanctioned hawker market in Hong Kong. Established in 1975 for vendors, it now boasts over 100 stores selling all kind of knick-knacks. The name, however, originated from the fact that I sold chiefly ladies’ clothes in the beginning.

Although I rarely buy things from here, it’s an interesting place to visit as the merchandise there strong reflect current trends. The high red-white-blue plastic store coverings and myriad of goods also make for a unique sight.

Bear in mind that the market lasts over four blocks along Tung Choi Street!

Address: Tung Choi Street, Mongkok, Hong Kong

Opening times: 11:00 – 23:30

Where to shop for cheap clothes in Hong Kong (among other things)

Mongkok is one of the best places to shop if you are looking for cheap clothes. I’ve been buying my clothes there since I was a teenager, and despite the rise of Taobao and Aliexpress, sometimes it’s still better to buy in person. Now there are a few pointers that you need to keep in mind when shopping in Mongkok (and Hong Kong boutique in general:

  • Usually, everything is one size fit all – it’s mostly Asian sizes as well
  • You won’t get to try it on because there simply isn’t space and it’s not common practice
  • Shop around for the best price. I once found the same item four times with varying price tag
  • If the price is marked, you are unlikely to be able to haggle for it, but asks if they can lower the price if you are buying more than one piece
  • Check the goods, it’s common practice and sometimes there are some faults
  • Cash only! So hit an ATM first

Argyle Centre Mongkok

argyle centre Mongkok Hong Kong - Laugh Travel Eat

A maze in which I often get lost in, the Argyle Centre in Mongkok is a heaven for female shoppers but a nightmare to navigate for first-time visitors.

Unlike your average boutiques, the majority of these tiny stalls don’t have a shop name, nor would most people try to find it. It’s akin to the cross between the stalls you find in other Southeast Asia market and your average shop. As mentioned above, a lot of the shops sell the same stuff, so if you spot something you like, make sure you look all around the three stories before you buy.

argyle center mong kok hong kong - laugh travel eat

While I do have a few favourite stores, most of the time I get a little disorientated even after visiting it for at least hundreds of times! It is also connected to the New Plaza, which is distinguishable with the brighter, more conventional mall-appearance (and also have free WiFi).

They do, also have bathrooms, at the corridor connecting the two malls. The female is on the top floor, male second.

Address: One Mong Kok Road Commercial Centre, 1 Mong Kok Rd, Mong Kok

Opening times: unsure, but if you go there before 12pm, most of the shops won’t be open!

This is Our Place T.O.P.

TOP-corridor-portrait-kaitlyn-mong-kok-hong-kong-laugh-travel-eat

A brand new mall that has opened in mid-2018, This is Our Place is connected to the Argyle Center and is home to some hip and boutique shops. While a lot of the places are still in the opening stage, you can find some quirky design and cute design in the mall itself. So far, its main attraction is the bridge that connects to the 2nd floor of Argyle Center with its colourful glass windows:

Fa Yuen Street (between Prince Edward Road West and Argyle Street)

fa yuen street Mongkok Hong Kong - Laugh Travel Eat

Fa Yuen Street and Argyle Centre have been alternating as my favourite place to shop. Only a 5 minutes’ walk separates the two, therefore I often end up going to both anyway.

This particular stretch is home to another street market, one that I often roam around as opposed to Ladies Market. It caters to the local market as opposed to tourists, and sell a myriad of fruits, veg, electronics, and clothes.

side street fa yuen street Mongkok Hong Kong - Laugh Travel Eat

For those who want to buy fashion forward wears, then go to the side streets where the none-stalls are. These will have names, though are often meaningless and a new shop would soon replace an old. The northern ends have some thrift and factory-outlet style shops for the thrifties as well.

Address: Fa Yuen Street – between Prince Edward West and Argyle Street

Opening times: it usually opens up around 10am and close around 7 pm. Individual stores vary.

Allied Plaza

Allied-plaza-mong-kok-hong-kong-laugh-travel-eat

If neither of the above tickles your fancy, then you can hop over to Allie Plaza as well. It is smaller than the aforementioned places, and the mall itself is a bit shabby. I don’t tend to shop around there but it’s also in the neighborhood!

Address: 760 Nathan Rd, Prince Edward

Opening times: 11:30 – 21:00

Mongkok Computer Centre

Let’s venture away from clothes and discuss electronics. There are more and more stores popping up that sells phone cases, USB cable etc, and while Sham Shui Po is always home to the most choices, you can get most of what you want at Mongkok Computer Centre too. It’s towards the southern end of Mongkok near Sneaker Street. Hong Kong is famous for buying electronics for the cheap, too, but be wary of prices. Check price.com.hk if you are in doubt.

Address: 8-8A Nelson St, Mong Kok Opening times: 10:00 – 23:00

Sino Centre

If you aren’t looking for particularly high-tech gadgets, Sino Plaza should suit your need. Located along Nathan Road, it is mainly for games and phone or tablet related accessories. There are also a few comic book stores and hair product stores thrown into the mix.

Address: Mong Kok, 彌敦道582-592號

Opening times: 12:00 – 23:00

Sneaker Street

sneaker-street-mong-kok-hong-kong-laugh-travel-eat

With a self-explanatory name, the Sneaker Street is actually a nickname to the southern end of Fa Yuen Street, dedicated to sports brand. Not being a huge sports fan, I don’t spend a lot of time shopping here, but I’ve accompanied friends who wanted to buy basketball player’s shirts here. Usually, the street is crowded with tourists here to buy sneakers, and it is a short walk to most of the other places listed here.

Address: Fa Yuen Street between Nelson to Soy Street

Langham Place

langham place Mongkok Hong Kong - Laugh Travel Eat

You might be getting claustrophobic or in need of an air-conditioned place by now, and Langham Place is perfect. A huge mall with over 13 floors and some of the longest escalators in Hong Kong, there are restaurants, high-street stores and small boutiques in here as well as a cinema. Even if you aren’t going for shopping, the escalator and the view from the top is pretty impressive.

Address: Langham Place Shopping Mall, 號, 8 Argyle St, Mong Kok

Opening times: 8:00 – 23:00

Mongkok food guide

I thought about doing a standalone Mongkok food guide (110/31), but most of it is covered in my egg waffle , bubble tea , and favourite restaurants posts respectively as a whole. So I’ll pick and choose some of my favourite here to make it the monster-sized guide it is!

Where to eat in Mongkok

For me, there are three main snack points in Mongkok, two of which I had covered already. From north to south, I’ll introduce them along with my go-to orders:

Fa Yuen Street/Bute Street

Bute Street is a street that dissects Fa Yuen Street on the southern end of the shopping section I mentioned earlier. You can also get Tenren or Sharetea for bubble tea or fresh juice from a small stand diagonally across the store pictured below. For even more authentic Hong Kong street food, try the fish balls and fish sai mai from the local stores for 8 dollars a skewer each.

Argyle Center

In recent years, Argyle Center had refurbished their space and opened up two brand new street food corners on the first and second floor.

Stir Noodles

However, I want to introduce the “stir-noodles” first. It has been around since I was a little girl, whereby you can pick your own toppings to add in a small bag of cooked noodles (dry) then mix with desired sauces. Typical toppings include squid, sausages etc. They are usually offered with three toppings, though you can add more by paying more. It’s been a while since I’ve had any but the average costs are 16 HKD with three toppings.

You can find this either on the top floor of the mall or the ground floor of the adjacent New City Plaza.

sushi handroll place argyle centre Mongkok Hong Kong - Laugh Travel Eat

Do you like Japanese food? Because my sister is obsessed with this sushi handroll place and it is value for money and delicious! Honestly the best combo. She swears by the soft shell crab handroll, while I quite like the seared salmon handroll!

sushi handroll argyle centre Mongkok Hong Kong - Laugh Travel Eat

Just around the corner from the handroll store is my favourite egg waffle place : Modos. They do a variety of flavour from the usual chocolate to cheese and even meat floss and shrimp paste!

Small Snacks

There are two stalls to get small HK snacks from – one is on the second floor towards the end of the corridor Modos is at, the other is one floor down. You can get siu mai, popcorn chickens and whatnot for a very reasonable price

happy lemon mong kok hong kong - laugh travel eat

There are a ton of bubble tea shops there and I have an entire blog post on bubble tea in Hong Kong. My favourite is ITea next to the colourful bridge that connects to T.O.P. mall on second floor.

Dundas Street Hong Kong

dundas street Mongkok Hong Kong - Laugh Travel Eat

The eastern section of Dundas Street is like a gold mine for street food stores. The entire street is full of bubble tea places, so you would really be spoilt for choice. You also have a Mammy’s pancake right off the eastern end around the corner on Kwong Wa Street for those who crave egg waffles.  There are also several Thai tea places that has popped up!

Other foods on offer are cheese tarts, loaded fries, fishballs etc! The list is endless!

What to eat in Mong Kok list

  • Bubble Tea/fresh juice/sugar cane juice
  • Fishballs or fish sai mai
  • Stir noodles
  • Sushi handrolls
  • Yim so chicken

Other places to visit in Mong Kok

Gold fish street.

gold fish market bute street tung choi street Mongkok Hong Kong - Laugh Travel Eat

Have you ever seen goldfishes sold in plastic bags (with water)? If you haven’t, then you are in luck! Gold Fish Street is nicknamed so because it sells gold fishes. Although nowadays the gold fish stalls clusters around the intersection of Tung Choi Street and Bute Street, near Fa Yuen Street!

If you want to see cute puppies and kittens, go south along Tung Choi Street, which is also nicknamed Pet Street.

Sai Yeung Choi Street

Sai Yueng Choi Street Mongkok Hong Kong - Laugh Travel Eat

The entire Sai Yeung Choi Street south of Mong Kok Street is like the heart of Mong Kok. It used to become a pedestrian zone during weekends and public holidays, but sadly that was canceled at the end of 2018 due to noise complaints. To the west is Nathan Road, to the East is Ladies Market and Sneaker Street, and Sai Yueng Choi Street is more akin to a high street with chained brands. There is now a huge Forever 21, as well as numerous makeup, skin-care shops, and electronic stores.

Hong Kong Guide: Where to Go and What to Do in Mong Kok

With plenty of shopping and dining out options, some great bars and a couple of fun things to see and do, Mong Kok is the place to be in Hong Kong. Sure it may be a little hectic, but isn’t that what life in Honkers is all about? These are our absolute favourite spots around that we think you’ll love too.

Who Needs Sleep? Here Are 10 Things To Do At Night In Hong Kong

What To Eat and Drink:

#1 Egg Waffles  –  Or  Gai Daan Zai

You may have seen this street food all over HK, but in Mong Kok, but you can hardly walk two steps without finding a street vendor selling this local delight. These sweet ‘n’ crispy little guys are the perfect pick-me-up after a long day pounding the pavements.

Address: Find them all over Mong Kok!

#2  The Ale Project

After a long day navigating the packed streets of MK, you may be in need of a beer come 5pm. The Ale Project is one of the only craft beer focused bars in Kowloon and has an extensive selection of beers and ales to choose from (local brews and selected imports). For a few light snacks there are also sandwiches and such.

Address: 15 Hak Po Street, Mong Kok, Hong Kong. Closest MTR Exit: Mong Kok, Exit D2

shk-mongkok-guide-knockbox-coffee

#3  Knockbox Coffee

For serious coffee fans, Knockbox is the place to come to help fuel your Mong Kok adventure. The team behind the cafe are truly passionate about coffee and want to show it off in its truest forms ( so no syrups available here! ). On Friday nights, they even host a “coffee premiere” where local coffee enthusiasts gather and taste unlimited brewed coffee from 6.30 – 10pm.

Address: 21 Hak Po Street, Mong Kok, Hong Kong Closest MTR Exit: Mong Kok, Exit E2

#4  One Dim Sum

My favourite local dim sum spot, you can find me here at some point most weekends. My top picks at any Dim Sum place will always be char siu bao and siu mai , but I can never bring myself to leave without having at least one egg custard bun. Be sure to get there early though, the doors may open at 10am, but there’s always a queue!

Address: Shop 1 & 2, G/F, Kenwood Mansion, 15 Playing Field Road, Prince Edward Closest MTR Exit: Prince Edward, Exit A

shk-mongkok-area-guide-alibi-afternoon-tea

#5  Afternoon Tea at Alibi, Cordis Hotel

For a refreshing change of pace in chaotic Mong Kong, Afternoon Tea at Alibi is the ideal choice. The picnic inspired afternoon tea is served in a traditional wicker hamper and offers up sophisticated, modern twists on the traditional faves, such as mini crab cake burgers and foie gras pâté with bourbon bacon jam on freshly baked French baguettes.

Address: Find it at Level 5, Cordis Hotel, 555 Shanghai Street, Mong Kok, Hong Kong Closest MTR Exit: Mong Kok, Exit C3

#6  The Garage Bar

Formerly The Backyard Bar, this outdoor area was recently revamped and transformed into The Garage Bar, an outdoor food truck and craft beer destination. Try out the Ninja Lobster Roll and wash it down with an ice cold Big Wave Bay, by the Hong Kong Beer Co., or choose three different labels and create your own beer flight.

Address: Level L, Cordis Hotel, 555 Shanghai Street, Mong Kok, Hong Kong Closest MTR Exit: Mong Kok, Exit C3

#7  Sky 726

Perched on the top floor of the Nathan 726,  Sky  offers up a killer view of downtown Mong Kok. Enjoy their high-end French cuisine and be sure to sip on some quality cocktails, away from the busy streets below. Definitely a new date night option!

Address: 25/F, 726 Nathan Road Building, 724-726 Nathan Road, Mong Kok, Hong Kong Closest MTR Exit: Mong Kok, A1

What to do:

shk-mongkok-guide-ladies-market

#1  The Ladies Market

We could hardly write about Mong Kok and not mention the famous Ladies Market. The 1km stretch is jam packed with stalls selling clothing, accessories, toys, electrical items, souvenirs and so much more. It’s always bustling, but it’s best to go at night when the streets are lit up and the place really comes alive.

Address: Tung Choi Street, Mong Kok, Hong Kong Closest MTR Exit: Mong Kok, Exit B3

#2  The Langham Place Shopping Mall

If you’re in need of a break from the streets of Mong Kok, find refuge (and air-conditioning) in the colossal Langham Place shopping mall. Containing over 300 shops, with international brands as well as local independent labels, Langham Place has everything you need under one roof. Also, housing a cinema and an array of eateries, it’s the perfect spot to know just in case the rain decides to pour.

Address: 8 Argyle St, Mong Kok, Hong Kong Closest MTR Exit: Mong Kok, Exit C3

shk-mongkok-guide-flower-market

#3  Flower Market Road

One of our favourite spots in all of Hong Kong is Flower Market Road. It’s a welcome respite from the extreme hustle and bustle of the Mong Kok streets. Located on the Prince Edward side, expect to find streets lined with shops selling all varieties of flowers and plants at very reasonable prices. It’s perfect for a Sunday afternoon stroll after filling your stomachs with dim sum .

Address: Flower Market Road, Mong Kok, Hong Kong Closest MTR Exit: Prince Edward, Exit B2

shk-mongkok-guide-goldfish-market

#4  Goldfish Market

Another MK wonder. Goldfish Market is an entire street dedicated to selling, you guessed it – fish! As well as the huge variety of live fish available (and every imaginable accessory), the market bizarrely also has small pets such as hamsters, frogs and turtles. The market is a weird and wonderful place to explore in this city of ours!

Address: Tung Choi Street North (Goldfish Street), Mong Kok, Hong Kok Closest MTR Exit: Mong Kok, Exit B3

#5  Me and George

Hidden in the depths of the Ladies Market, “Me and Gee” is one of the cheapest second-hand stores around. This diamond in the rough is famous for its racks of Japanese and Korean vintage clothes at bargain prices. You may need to dig a little to come away with the good stuff, but part of the fun is in the hunt!

Address: 64  Tung Choi Street, Mong Kok, Hong Kong Closest MTR Exit: Mong Kok, Exit B3

#6  MOKO Shopping Mall

Another must-know haven in Mong Kok is the MOKO shopping mall. Shop ‘til you drop at the huge variety of major brands on offer and then feast to your heart’s content at any of the many amazing restaurants!

Address: 193 Prince Edward Road West, Mong Kok, Hong Kong Closest MTR Exit: Mong Kok, Exit B3

shk-mongkok-area-guide-sneaker-street

#7  Sneaker Street

If running about Kowloon all day has your feet gettin’ a little sore, Sneaker Street is the place to head to get some new kicks. As the name would suggest, it’s an entire street offering up pretty much every sportswear and sneaker brand out there and is a must visit for any mama who loves her comfy shoes!

Address: Fa Yuen Street, Mong Kok, Hong Kong Closest MTR Exit: Mong Kok, Exit D2

Happy exploring !

Hong Kong's best-known travel agency folds after 50 years

Industry leader expects woes to continue for rest of 2022

PUBLISHED : 28 Jan 2022 at 19:27

WRITER: South China Morning Post

HONG KONG: One of Hong Kong's best-known tour operators has decided to wind up after 50 years of business and amid the worsening Omicron outbreak, with an industry leader expecting the travel sector's woes to continue for the rest of 2022 at least.

Morning Star Travel Services said on its website on Thursday that the board of directors had passed a resolution to voluntarily liquidate the tour operator according to the Companies (Winding Up and Miscellaneous Provisions) Ordinance.

It added that the first meeting of creditors would be held on Feb 16.

Apart from the statement on its homepage, the agency's website was no longer accessible on Thursday.

Established in 1972, Morning Star was one of the leading travel agencies in Hong Kong, with more than 10 outlets across the city and Macau.

In addition to tour groups, ticket and hotel packages, and chartered tours, it had also developed cruise products and corporate services over the recent years.

Fanny Yeung, executive director of the Travel Industry Council of Hong Kong said that she believed the decision by Morning Star's directors had been a difficult one, with more resources being lost the longer the company continued to operate.

"We expect [tourism will resume] at the last quarter of this year [at the earliest], it's still a long way for the tourism industry to return to normal. The outlook is not positive," she said.

Tourism in the city declined significantly over the past two years, with the mainland Chinese border remaining closed after talks stalled during the recent outbreak and travel with the rest of the world being limited by stringent quarantine measures.

Statistics provided by the council found that 63 travel agencies had permanently terminated their services between July and December of last year, with only 26 agencies opening in 2021, compared to 62 in 2020.

Tourism lawmaker Perry Yiu Pak-leung said that he was saddened by Morning Star's closure and hoped the government would extend more support to the travel sector.

"The company has a 50-year-old history and it's a household name among many citizens. It's such a huge loss," he said, adding that the government should not offer such limited financial support during every local coronavirus outbreak.

"Even if there was no fifth wave now, the industry would still not be able to operate without the border opening with the mainland or without the resumption of overseas tours."

Yiu added that the industry had not been able to benefit from the last year's drop in infection rates or relaxed social-distancing measures, noting that bigger agencies had found it especially hard to profit by only running local cruises and tours.

As a prominent local travel agency, Morning Star was the first such company to be publicly listed in Hong Kong. It was sold to a private investor in 2012, then acquired by listed Chinese developer Fantasia Holdings three years later.

A Fantasia interim report from 2020 showed that Morning Star was sold to a third party engaged in the travel business for 50.4 million yuan (US$7.9 million) in March of the same year.

But as the pandemic emerged, the agency began to struggle financially, with Danish travel firm V.O.S. Aps filing an application at the High Court as a creditor to wind up the company.

Morning Star also received two relief payments of HK$3.57 million (US$458,000) from the government for its 147 employees under the city's Covid-19 business support scheme in 2020.

Other tour operators have also suffered during the pandemic, with Hong Thai Travel Services receiving a similar liquidation plea after failing to settle a payment from two years ago.
