EXPLORING YAKUSHIMA SINCE 2010

THE GUIDING SPECIALIST

The conception of Yakushima Experience tours started in November 2010 when there were no other english specific tour operators & very few international visitors.  I saw the beauty of Yakushima and went all in for a wild island lifestyle…

My passion to share local knowledge and an honest & adventurous spirit are my proudest attributes.  This unique lifestyle allows me to be myself, my guests soon understand that guiding is not just a job to me.   Surrounded by a spectacularly diverse ecology, I feel privileged to share this majestic island with travelers who have discovered Yakushima.

DESIGNING YOUR EXPERIENCE

We have guided many visitors throughout the four corners of the island and have been exploring Yakushima since 2010 making us the oldest native english guiding company in Yakushima.

We mainly focus on offering visitors a number of hiking options and the Yakushima Island Sights Tour,  guided by our team of experienced local adventure guides .

We are here to help you maximize your time in Yakushima.

WILD DEER & MONKEY EXPERIENCES

The population here sits at around 13 500 people, around 16 000 Yakushika (native deer), & 12 000 Yakuzaru (native macaque).  The island is approximately 500 square kilometres and we have an array of coastal tour options all the way up to the alpine region tours peaking at 1936m.

DISCOVERING UNIQUE LOCATIONS

Yakushima is a spectacular sub-tropical island located in the south-west of Japan, tucked in between Kyushu and Amami (although much closer to mainland Kagoshima).  The ocean temperature is 20 degrees celcius mid-winter & up to 28 degrees in summer.

The island is pristine as over 90% of Yakushima is designated as National Park, coastal and alpine UNESCO World Heritage and Special Ecologically Significant zones.  Our tours range from the coastal sand & coral beaches, deep forest with ancient species, to the unusual alpine granite features.  There are a plethora of unique locations ready to be discovered.

Yakushima's diverse climate

The bedrock of the island is granite, and it is said that a ridge thrown up by movement in the earth's crust is what formed the island. One of the main features of this area is that the differences in temperature and climates of the island are the largest on earth. You can see plants from both subtropical zones and cold temperate zones on the island, and it rains so much that local people say it rains 35 days a month.

Sightseeing spots

Look out onto the deep blue ocean spreading out to the horizon at Yakushima Lighthouse and wander along the beautiful sandy beach at Sango-no-hama (coral shore)—a spot where you can find star-shaped sand. If you want to experience canoeing, forest bathing, or take a tour of the whole island with a veteran guide, make sure to reserve your place on a tour.

How to Get There

Access the island in around two hours and 35 minutes to either Abou Port or Miyanoura Port by jetfoil from the north pier of Kagoshima Honko. Alternatively, take the four-hour ferry to Miyanoura Port, or a 40-minute flight to Yakushima Airport from Kagoshima Airport.

Go Yakushima Tours

Yakushima tours with Go Yakushima focus upon hikes into the forests and mountains of the island.  Our tours suit all abilities, levels and interests.  From short & easy walks to taxing & challenging hikes up some of Yakushima’s mountains.  Go Yakushima also provide full day island tours that circumvent the coastal route of the island and the focus upon the island`s history & culture as well as some outstanding areas of natural beauty and fun time in the fantastic rivers & sea.  We can cater families with small children as well as elderly who may have walking problems.

' class=

A frequent question visitors consider is, “Do I need a guide?”  Our simple reply is that if you have gone to the great effort and expense to get to Yakushima, then the relatively cheaper expense of a guide with local knowledge can turn your Yakushima trip from one of random photos of trees into a very memorable and personal experience.

Go Yakushima offer five types of tours, ranging from a few hours to a full day in the mountains.  Our popular Island Tour is a day filled with local information while visiting many of the sights around the island.  During the summer months there is usually always time for some fun-time in the water.  A day tour in the forest with one of our guides should not be missed as the pace is relaxed and the focus is on the small things that would otherwise be missed by the uninformed hiker.

During the late spring to early summer, we offer night time tours to observe female turtles lay their eggs upon the beach.  Yakushima receives the most number of nesting turtles in Japan.  The experience is unforgettable.

Go Yakushima arrange hiking gear rental if required.  Please indicate what equipment you require and the necessary sizes on the Go Yakushima Booking Form .

Yakushima (v) is a subtropical island off the southern coast of Kyushu and part of Kagoshima Prefecture . It is covered by an extensive cedar forest that contains some of Japan's oldest living trees. Trees more than 1000 years old are affectionately called yakusugi (a combination of Yakushima and sugi, the Japanese word for cedar), the most ancient of which may be over 7000 years old.

The island's cedar forests were logged extensively in the past, particularly during the late feudal age for the production of cedar shingles. Today the forests have well recovered from past logging and are a national park , while some areas were declared a Natural World Heritage Site in 1993. Most tourists come to the island to hike through the mountainous forests.

As a subtropical island with nearly 2000 meter high mountains, Yakushima attracts a lot of rainfall around the year, with a local saying claiming that it rains "35 days a month". While that may be an exaggeration, there is some rain almost on a daily basis, especially in the mountainous interior, although the rain can also be light and limited to short periods of time. In higher elevations the precipitation falls as snow during the winter months.

THE ALPS ON THE OCEAN

Welcome to yakushima.

%E3%82%AD%E3%83%A3%E3%83%97%E3%83%81%E3%

Yakushima is circular island with a circumference of 132 km.  Located in southern Kyushu, 135 km from Kagoshima city, with a population of around 13,000 people.

Yakushima is also known as "The Alps on the Ocean",  as there are many mountains over 1,000 m high on the island which covers in snow in winter. Mt. Miyanoura  at 1,936m is the highest mountain in Kyushu.

The various ecosystems which exist at different altitudes make Yakushima unique. Each ecosystem has its own vegetation and landscape with gradual changes between them.

Yakushima was officially registered as Japan's first World Natural Heritage Site in 1993, along with Shirakami mountain in Akita

Yakushima Turtle Viewing

tours yakushima

The tour must be booked at least a day in advance as we must register all participants with the NPO office who run the volunteer activities on Inakahama beach. In order to minimize the disturbance to the turtles there is a limit on the number of people who can attend this tour each night (50 people).  To avoid disappointment then please book as early as you can.

Watching a loggerhead turtle up close as she lays her eggs is an unforgettable and moving experience.

A YES guide will pick you up from your accommodation (between Anbo – Nagata) and take you to the Inakahama beach in Nagata.  Guests staying in accommodation south of Anbo will be asked to meet the YES guide at the Yakushima Airport and at the end of the tour they will be returned to the Yakushima Airport.  Upon arrival at the beach the YES guide will register you onto the tour and once registered onto the tour, the YES guide will give you a very detailed account of the loggerhead turtles, as well as explaining the conservation project at the Inakahama Beach.

Guides from the NPO patrol the beach and once a turtle has begun to lay her eggs the NPO guides call the tour participants onto the beach. Guests enter the beach with the YES guide and watch the turtle at close range as she lays her eggs.  You will see the turtle lay 100 – 120 eggs and then fastidiously cover the eggs so that there are no traces of her nest.  At this point the loggerhead then heads back to the sea.  The time schedule for the turtle tour is dependent upon what time `your` turtle turns up on the beach, but the latest you will leave the turtle beach is 10:30 pm. There are occasions during the season when a turtle fails to come upon the beach.

Turtles are sensitive to light and so there is a strict ban on any photography or filming during the tour.

Yakushima Turtle Viewing Tour fee

included in the price:   / NPO beach entrance fee / transportation
