Lightweight road bikes have always been one of the most popular types of bikes for casual riders. And this is a comprehensive review of the Trek 1200 aluminum road bike from 2006.

The Trek 1200 has long held a place among road bikes, thanks to its lightweight aluminum frame, multiple speeds, and specifications for fast riding and a more comfortable road ride. Some road riders use it as their first road bike.

Trek 1200

Road Performance

We prefer flat, mixed dirt roads because they are the flattest and can be accelerated to the highest speeds. With its fast road-ready head tube angle and lightweight Alpha SL aluminum frame, combined with 25C fast-riding tires, the Trek 1200 performs surprisingly well on roads where you can accelerate.

Riders new to road bikes will be familiar with the Trek 1200 and will feel more at ease on roads in good condition with few undulations, but on hilly terrain, the Bontrager Select can show amazing traction with the 3X9 drivetrain and allow you to go up hills more comfortably. Not to mention on steep downhills.

Commuter Roads

Tarmac and brick sidewalks are the most commonly used roads for commuting. While the road performance is superior, the commuter road performance of the Trek 1200 is as simple as breathing.

The carbon brazed dimensional fork makes it easier to roll the front wheel during the ride. The most popular gear is the smallest 30-tooth Bontrager Select cog, which is not too fast but allows you to get through crowds more easily and onto roads where you can ride faster. Has an aggressive riding position that will not let you down on downhill roads.

Although it is not a mid-range road bike, it provides a better commuting experience than a standard commuter road bike.

With the current development of road bikes, the frames of mid to high-end road bikes usually use carbon fiber, but the choice of frame material in Trek or other brands of low to mid-range road bikes is still dominated by aluminum frames.

The Trek 1200 SL has an Alpha SL aluminum frame that is lightweight and simple to maintain. The paint color is dark red, which I personally do not dislike. However, the most popular paint colors today are still the classic popular colors black, white, and gray.

The Trek 1200 aluminum road bike has a very steep headtube angle of 73°.

This is a very aggressive head tube angle, which means you can climb more efficiently on steeper uphill roads and descend more comfortably. This is one of the primary reasons that some riders use the Trek 1200 as a training bike.

However, staying upright on flat roads becomes more difficult as a result of this. As a result of the body geometry angle, it is closer to a race road bike.

Components and Specifications

Despite the low replacement cost, the performance is excellent, and the braking effect is comparable to that of mechanical disc brakes. If you are not a particularly aggressive road cyclist, the Aluminum dual-pivot brakes are ideal.

You’ll be impressed with the performance of the Trek 1200 brakes after a little break-in time, with crisp braking and not too many cables for a full set of braking action.

When it comes time to replace the brakes, I believe it would be a good idea to upgrade to mechanical disc brakes along the way for lower maintenance costs and a better experience.

Carbon fiber fork

The fork is subjected to a lot of strain, especially on descending roads or when there are potholes and rough terrain, and a good fork will help the bike last longer.

Bontrager forks have withstood the test of time, despite being mostly found on low to mid-range road bikes. When subjected to large impacts, the fork will not deform, and its internal construction reduces the impact on the Trek 1200.

I have to say that the carbon fiber fork has contributed to the Trek 1200’s overall weight reduction, which I believe would have been a mistake on the designer’s part if a cheaper aluminum fork had been used.

There isn’t much to complain about with the Trek 1200’s fork, and it performs admirably on all terrains.

Bontrager Select Tires

The Trek 1200 and Trek 2000 both have 700 x 25c Bontrager Select tires. This is the most commonly used tire size.

They provide dependable traction in a variety of terrains. And because their rims can accommodate 23c and 28c tires, you can change widths depending on whether you want a faster or more comfortable ride.

However, I’m more at ease with the Trek 1200’s 25c mid-width tires.

Carbon Fiber Seatpost

Bontrager Carbon seatposts are still designed to reduce overall bike weight. This part of the bike is often overlooked.

Trek 1200 aluminum road bike still considered the weight factor of this part at the time. Because the Trek 1200 is not expensive, it does not cut corners by using low-cost components. So I’m not concerned about the Trek 1200’s durability.

However, because it lacks a quick lift mechanism, riders cannot quickly find the proper riding height.

Other versions of the Trek 1200

The 1999 production Trek 1200 is the earliest information I could find on the Trek 1200, a model that is hard to find even in the used bike trade. I have only found a few comparisons from a handful of components and forums.

The 1999 Trek 1200 has a 3X8 drivetrain and the fork is made of Chromoly. The seatpost, on the other hand, is made of aluminum. These accessories arguably keep him out of the mid-range configuration. And the price is just less than $100 lower than the 2006 Trek 1200. So not a great value for the money.

If you want to go on a road trip, it also has The commuter-friendly fenders and rear rack mounting holes allow for more touring gear, so you won’t run out of room.

So, for an additional $700 on top of the Trek Domane AL 2, you get a lot of premium gearing. So it’s a good value-for-money investment that will last for years without being outperformed by other road bike configurations.

ALL CITY Super Professional vs Trek 1200

The ALL CITY Super Professional road bike, which can handle more difficult terrain, is a popular daily commuter model.

The price is comparable to the Trek Domane AL 4 Disc, but the focus is on how the daily commuter rides, so the head tube angle is similar to the Trek 1200, and it performs better on cobblestones or potholes.

The 612 select chromoly steel frame is very strong, and despite being heavier than the aluminum frame, it will last for ten years. After ten years of use, the material frame retains the same properties.

The improved internal alignment will also improve the riding experience for commuters. It’s not the most affordable commuter road bike, but it’s built to last for 20 or even 30 years, making it more than just a passing investment.

Over the years, aluminum frames have earned a reputation as being overly stiff and providing poor ride quality compared to their carbon brethren. The engineers at Trek have made it their mission to challenge this assumption, using methods that allow the material to retain its best characteristics—its lightness and strength—while simultaneously improving ride quality. What is hydroforming?

Proven effective in the world of high-end performance automobiles, hydroforming is the process of injecting fluid into a cylindrical frame tube to manipulate it into a more beneficial shape. Hydroforming allows Trek engineers to bring complex aluminum frame designs, especially those with advanced aerodynamic properties, from the drawing board to the production line. Great value for money.

I've yet to find any!!!

In September 2007 myself and a friend rode 750 miles across France back to the UK. I was riding my Trek 1200 which I had chosen for the ride as it is light yet robust. We covered the trip in 11 days carrying all our gear, tents etc on the bikes and it was very comfortable,reponshive and trouble free for the whole trip. I have now notched 1400 miles on it and have not even had it serviced as it is still as good as new.

Overall this a very astounding bike. i bought it for the sweet color and the great price. this is meant to be for training rides an it does a great job at that. the tiagra is not as good as ultegra but its good enough for fast paced group training. wheels are solid adn are good for the broken up roads. just changed the wheels and saddle

I bought this bike mainly to ride to work on (40 miles round trip) and go out for some longer stuff at the weekends. I was strapped for cash, so I would have bought a more expensive bike if I'd had the money. My previous ride was a decrepit giant cfr, that had been passed on to my wife. Of all the bikes in this price range, I felt this offered the most. The bike shop I bought it from was terrible and had the most appalling after sales - so I can't blame a few of the early niggles on trek. I can however blame the two snapped spokes on two different rides on them - as with other reviews, the wheels did disapoint a bit. I also managed to wear through the middle of the tyre - the first time I've ever managed that....they could sort that out for not alot of extra money. As for the rest - its not too bad! It is a really comfy ride - aside from the weight, it rides superbly. Hills, long flats, the lot. I know that people tend to think highly of the bike they've got regardless, but I was hoping to moan about this bike as soon as I had money for a more expensive model - I realised I frankly didn't need to spend any more for my requirements. If I was still racing I'd want less weight and better wheels and thats it.

I am a tinkerer -- bike is nice enough to be worth improving without ever spending the price of a carbon frame. Good wheels are always a good investment.

The stock Wheels and Seat. Tiagra works fine, but will eventually swap out for Ultegra. Gave bike a 4.5 for value as stock. Quality with modes is much better than that!

Bought this for my wife - and she loves it. NOT now! Had it setup with flat bar using speed shifters, as per her preference. Stock wheels weight a ton -- gave her my old Rolf Vector on front and a new Racelite on rear!. Wheels rock. She had bike on a modest downhill at 30.5 mph -- fastest ever for her on any bike! She had ACL surgery about 3 yrs ago -- not as stong as she could be. Also lost another 3 oz going to an Easton EA70 flatbar. May get her an Ultegra Triple since the frame is pretty and really nice. The limiting factor on this bike stock is Wheels and Tiagra, and between those, defenitely the heavy wheels! Dumped seat for a Terry Lady's Butterfly. Frame is nice enough to play with

Trek 5000 OCLV, Trek 7300, Trek 7700, Trek 1000. Tried comparable Cannondales and Specialized.

Great looking bike (frame) for the money. Stable and neutral handling but also very stiff and responsive.

Tig welding is a bit raw and industrial looking. Curiously, despite having mudguard eyes front and rear there is no chainstay bridge.

I bought this bike about 4 months ago on impulse because it does look really good for the money at the original price of £700 and even better value at the discounted price of £560. Then I had a change of heart and stripped it down, put the ShimaNO on another bike and sold that bike off. For a while I didn't know what to do with the frameset but really needed a winter bike. So last week I put a lightly used 2002 Campag Centaur groupset on it and finished it off with Monoc bars and stem, a no name seatpin and a Rolls Due saddle from the spares box. After just a few rides I'm quite impressed with this bike, especially when considering the modest price tag. After a shakedown ride where I had a dabble in the sprint and came second to one of our local sprinters I took it out on the chain-gang ride the next day. Amazingly, I romped up the first steep 'power' climb well ahead of the others! This bike is so stiff and responsive. On the longer climbs I slipped off towards the back of the bunch but this always used to happen anyway. This frame is stiff and with a 35mm diameter down tube plus some minor tube shaping (ovalising) it is more like a Cannondale than you might at first think. Although I'm a big fan of steel frames I really can't see a steel frame being able to match this frame for stiffness and I'd like to keep it without mudguards and use it in the dry whenever possible. So I still need a winter bike!

All sorts of steel road frames, most recently a Ribble 631. Cinelli Proxima (aluminium) and no-name 7005.

Tiagra components- you get what you pay for.

First road bike I purchased. Also looked at specialized allez, giant ocr3. All fairly similar so I went with what I felt was the best shop. Overall quite pleased with the bike. After 200 miles opted for speedplay pedals which make a huge difference with power and cornering. Don't mind the saddle at all. Tiagra front derailleur shifts inconsistantly. For a 40-50 mile/week rider or someone looking for a decent entry level bike, this is a good choice.

Paint job and frame

seat uncomfortable. shifting is fair. wheels are cheap. tires are so so. clearnace problem between back wheel and brake/frame.

Bike looks good. very uncomfortable seat. Doesn't appear to be very sturdy or well made. Really not much faster than my $300 marin mountain bike (bolonis ridge). Shifting is not very good particularly the side that shifts the 3 main gears. Worst prblem is the lack of clearnace between the rear wheel and brake/frame. Overall not pleased with this bike. I feel I could have done much better for the money. Cheap wheels.

Tiagra gruppo is supprisingly well-heeled and much nicer than I was expecting. Carbon fork is a great addition to the package. Wheels seem pretty strong, if a bit heavy. I beat them on the roads around here and they're still fairly true. Paint and color scheme is really, really sweet!

Shredded the Bontrager rear tire during a half-century (like I said, new baby = not a lot of time to train) and replaced it with a Conti Ultra 3000. SEATPOST!!! Just replaced with a Thomson, much nicer and lighter. I'm not fond of the saddle, either. Apparently, my butt doesn't work with the junk saver saddles, so I'm saving my pennies for a Selle Italia Flite.

I'm a former mountain biker who was looking to get into road riding to stay in shape. I had my heart set on a 2001 2200, but with a baby on the way, I had to be realistic. I've put on about 500-600 miles and love it. I ride it to work, to get in extra miles, and fly through my commute. I'm absolutely in love with this bike, it handles very nicely, corners smoothly, and accelerates as fast as I can push the pedals! The setup and controls are very nice, I like the Tiarga shifters. After trying a 1000 with Sora, it's worth the extra $$. I was supprised that Trek would chince on the seatpost, mine was the no-tilt version. I also suspect it's an early season model, as I have the T on the headtube, not the cool headbadge.

Brakes, chainset and Trek (I nearly bought a flatbar and changed my mind at the last minute for the dropbar at an extra £100. Someone doing the same with a 1400 model gets 105 changers (rather than Tiagra) for the same money. I contacted Trek and they basically said 'tough, we make more money out of some customers than others'.

With 20% off this was real value for money and is probably still a good buy at full price (£700). The frame is not the lightest, but is strong. The carbon fork is excellent to the extent I can't really tell the difference in comfort between this aluminium frame and my old 105 frame. The bike handles well and is very sure on fast corners. The Tiagra groupset works well enough but when the time comes I will upgrade to 105. The Suntour chain set flexes quite a bit on the large ring and the granny ring is steel. The wheels have performed well so far and have stayed true. The brakes work fine but, like Martyn, my front QR seized too when the shiny coating corroded (OK once stripped and greased). I have achieved a much better fit/more comfortable ride by inverting the stem so it now has a slight rise. Saddles are very personal but for me this one is comfortable. This is a great fast commuter and is also well suited for the not too serious recreational rider.

Tiagra derailleurs

I just got back into cycling after 20 yrs. Got into MTB riding about a year ago and decided that I wanted a road bike to supplement the days when the MTB trail was too wet from rain. For my purposes, I just wanted a good entry level bike and the Trek 1200 fills the bill. The only problem I have had so far is tuning the front derailleur. I get a lot of chain rub on the high and low gears on all three chain rings. The bike shop has worked on this problem twice, but can't seem to fix it. I'll keep working on it, worse case, I can always upgrade to a better derailleur.
