The 9 Coolest Educational Experiences In Columbus

' src=

Columbus is a smart city. Thanks to that nerdy undercurrent, there are tons of amazing educational experiences around town.

From tried and true standbys like COSI to hidden gems full of fossils, there are so many good ways to have fun while learning in Columbus. Yes, there are activities for the kids, but there are also engaging things to do for teens and adults. Who says you can’t teach an old dog new tricks?

Ohio Canid Center

field trips columbus ohio

About: The Ohio Canid Center is, hands down, one of the coolest things in central Ohio. In fairytales, wolves and other wild canids get a pretty bad rep. But educational groups like the center are working to change that. With their ambassador animals which include wolves and foxes, they travel around teaching people about the importance of these animals in the wild and their impacts on our natural ecosystems. Location: You can catch Ohio Canid Center at a variety of events around the state throughout the year. Click here for more details. Cost: Most programs are free, but if you’d like to schedule a meet and greet with the animals for yourself, you can learn more here.

About: COSI is a classic Columbus experience. From hands-on experiments to special events, COSI has been entertaining and educating kids for decades with a planetarium, a theatre, and a variety of exhibits. In addition to exploring the science center on your own, you can also attend special nights where science-based activities abound. In fact, some of the events are 21+, so don’t go thinking all the fun is for the kids. Location: 333 W Broad St, Columbus, OH 43215 Cost: Prices vary. Click here for more details.

Columbus Zoo and Aquarium

field trips columbus ohio

About: Since 1927, the Columbus Zoo has been educating visitors from around the world about animals. With a message focused on conservation, a trip to the zoo and aquarium is a great way to learn about what we as humans can do to protect the world around us. Location: 4850 W Powell Rd, Powell, OH 43065 Cost: Admission prices vary. Click here for more info.

Orton Geological Museum at The Ohio State University

field trips columbus ohio

About: It doesn’t matter how old I get, I’ll never stop believing that dinosaurs are the coolest creatures that have ever roamed the planet. With the arrival of Cryolophosauraus to OSU , dinos are all the rage at Orton. But they have so much more to offer, like other unique fossils, meteorites, and more. Orton is a great way to spend an afternoon. Location: 125 Oval Dr S, Columbus, OH 43210 Cost: Free

Columbus Metropolitain Library

field trips columbus ohio

About: It wouldn’t be a list about education without including our amazing library system. The Columbus Metropolitan Library isn’t just a great place to curl up with a good book, they also provide all sorts of auxiliary activities, including classes, meet-up groups, children’s activities, and more. Location: There are scores of locations around the city, but you can find the Main Library at 96 S Grant Ave, Columbus, OH 43215. Cost: Free

Franklin Park Conservatory

field trips columbus ohio

About: I’ll be the first to admit that I don’t know anything about plants. Not how to keep them alive or what they need to thrive, but I do enjoy looking at them, which makes Franklin Park Conservatory a little slice of heaven. The Conservatory offers camps, classes, and outreach programs on topics ranging from horticulture to cooking and culinary arts. Plus, while you’re fostering your new green thumb, your kids can take a run around the new Children’s Garden. It’s epic. Location: 1777 E Broad St, Columbus, OH 43203 Cost: Admission ranges from $15-22 for non-members, with additional free days and discounts available.

Slate Run Living Historical Farm

field trips columbus ohio

About: Take a step back in time to the 1800s at Slate Run Historical Farm. Guests can experience first-hand what life was like on an Ohio farm, learning about the daily chores and difficulties of life in the 19th century. Location: 1375 OH-674, Canal Winchester, OH 43110 Cost: Free

Ohio History Center

field trips columbus ohio

About: The Ohio History Center is the home of the Ohio History Connection, a society that works to preserve and educate visitors on everything from life in the 1950s to extinct and endangered Ohio species to personal ancestry to Civil War history. Location: 800 E. 17th Ave, Columbus, OH 43211 Cost: Admission ranges from $6-$12

John Glenn Astronomy Park

field trips columbus ohio

About: So this one is a little bit of a drive, but trust me, it’s totally worth it. The John Glenn Astronomy Park (JGAP) is dedicated to sparking an interest in science, learning, and exploration by sharing with visitors the wonders of the sky. Named for Ohio’s beloved senator and astronaut, the park is inspiring a whole new generation of Ohioans to look to the skies. By: Author Julie Miller

Posted on Published: August 31, 2020

Round out your child’s homeschool or virtual school education with these fun and educational  field trip ideas around Central Ohio!

No doubt school looks different for many of us this year! Many Central Ohio school districts are starting out the year virtually or in a hybrid model. Many families have chosen to homeschool for the first time or to enroll in a fully digital academy! Our family has enrolled in a digital academy for the first semester and while it’s not what I anticipated for this year, I’m hoping to make the most of it by supplementing our screen time with some fun activities and local field trips!

Take an Open-Air Safari tour through the almost 10,000 acre park where animals are free to come up close to your safari (but no touching)! The tours are 2 – 2.5 hours long and take place in an open air bus.

There are two stops on the tour where you can get out of the vehicle. At the first stop, you can take a short hike down to the lake to feed catfish and to feed birds in an enclosed aviary.

The second stop on the tour is the Carnivore Center where you can see wild African dogs, cheetahs and more!

The tour guides are very knowledgeable and share a wealth of information about how The Wilds came to be, how animals have been saved through their conservation efforts and even little tid bits of information about the individual animals you may come across on your journey!

Columbus Field Trip Ideas for Remote Learning

The start of the school year in 2020 is unlike anything we've ever seen before. Most kids are getting up and dressed for first day of school photos by their front door, then heading back inside the house to take on a new year remotely, from the comfort of their own homes. While it may feel like the whole family is stuck inside for the foreseeable future, we're lucky to live in Columbus, named the most intelligent city on earth in 2015.

This intelligence manifests itself in many ways, including starts-ups, testing of technological advances, major research and development breakthroughs and more. Most importantly for families, there are a significant amount of attractions and places to take field trips to help enhance their children's remote learning and spend some time out of the house. We've rounded up a number of options for consideration below, including some lesser-known hidden gems in our community.

Pick a subject and get started!

Financial assistance is available for some groups through COSI's CAP.

Community Access Program

COSI CAP is a financial assistance program that provides exhibit admission subsidies made available by corporate and individual donors for underserved school children and disadvantaged families in Central Ohio.

Who may receive COSI CAP subsidies?

COSI CAP supplies subsidized exhibit admission for student groups from schools providing free and reduced lunches through the Federal Free School Lunch Program. Families with children may also receive COSI CAP subsidized exhibit admission through partnerships with local community agencies. In addition, the program provides for free and reduced admission days at COSI.

How do I apply for COSI CAP?

Organizations serving developmental disabilities adults and children automatically qualify for the maximum COSI CAP subsidy discount off the group exhibit only admission rate. Please call 614-228-2674 ext. 0 for details.

All other organizations must apply for COSI CAP subsidies. These subsidies are determined by a school's percentage of students participating in the Federal Free School Lunch Program or a community service agency's percentage of clients at or below the poverty level.

A COSI CAP information sheet including application requirements is available upon request via fax or email. The application can be completed here.

Who supports COSI CAP?

Borden Inc., Mount Carmel Health Systems, NetJets, and the Ingram-White Caste Foundation are the primary contributors to COSI CAP. Additional contributions are received from other corporations, foundations, and individuals.

How can I support COSI CAP?

Participants are encouraged to share their experiences with COSI CAP, so COSI may keep our generous donors informed about the success of their community commitment. Your comments will also help COSI seek additional funding for ongoing program costs and future support of disadvantaged families in Central Ohio. Feedback should be mailed to COSI, attn: Development, 333 W. Broad Street, Columbus, Ohio, 43215.

Field Trip Payment

Payment is due upon arrival (with the exception of Box Lunch orders, which must be paid two weeks in advance). Payments are required to be made in one lump sum payment. Only those persons listed on the group reservation are eligible for the discounted group rate. Individuals not included on the reservation will be charged full general admission. Purchase Orders will also be accepted as long as a copy of the PO is provided at check-in.

Groups wishing to pay in advance may call COSI at 614.228.2674 Monday - Friday to pay over the phone with a credit card, or mail their payment to: COSI Accounts Receivable 333 West Broad Street Columbus, OH 43215

Chaperone Resources

COSI is a participatory hands on environment for all ages. We invite you to use the exhibits actively but with respect. Disruptive behavior, vandalism, and misuse of exhibits or the building is not welcome and will not be tolerated. Guests who present a danger to other guests and to COSI will be promptly removed from the building without warning or refund.

Guidelines to make your field trip to COSI an awesome one:

1) COSI strongly recommends groups no larger than five (i.e., five students per one adult chaperone); little kidspace®, and Gadgets Café require a 1:5 chaperone to student ratio.

2) Please refrain from eating, drinking or smoking in COSI’s exhibition areas or Big Science Park. There is a designated smoking area in the North Courtyard on Level 1.

3) Talk to your teacher about the purpose and goals of the trip. You may be asked to lead the students through a scavenger hunt or activity, so it is good to become familiar with the materials you'll be using.

4) Get to know the members of your group. Learn their names and interests so that you can assist them in doing what they want to do at COSI.

5) Have fun! Learn something! It’s important that the students see adults participating in and having fun with science. Use COSI Team members as a resource to help you.

6) Ask questions! Some helpful things to ask your students are: Why do you think it does that? What do you think is happening? What could you change to make the outcome different? How do you think this works?

7) Follow your schedule. Clocks are located throughout the hallways. Be sure to stay on schedule and arrive at shows and movies about 10 minutes early.

8) Take frequent head counts to be sure you haven’t left anyone behind. If you do misplace someone, let a COSI Team member know or notify Guest Services in the Atrium on Level 1 or little kidspace® on Level 2.

9) Use your teacher as a resource. Do not hesitate to find him or her if you need help interacting with your group or are having behavior issues with a member of your group. Write down the name and cell phone or pager number of your group leader in case of emergencies.

10) If you misplace or lose a personal belonging, contact Guest Services in the Atrium or any COSI Team member. COSI's Lost & Found is also located at the Guest Services Desk in the Atrium on Level 1.

Box Lunches

Lunch orders must be finalized and paid in full at least two weeks prior to your arrival date. No cancellations or changes can be accepted after that point. Refunds are not available for box lunch orders.

Option A: Packed Lunches

The majority of field trip groups bring packed lunches with them. Please ask students to bring a sack lunch with his/her name written on it. Before you leave your school, put all of the lunches into large cardboard boxes or plastic bags with the school name and date written on them. Upon arrival, the COSI Team will help store your lunches in the group lunchroom on the Mezzanine Level. Refrigerators and microwaves are not available. You will be provided with a scheduled 25-minute time slot in the lunchroom for your group.

Option B: Lunch in COSI's Atomic Café Restaurant

Small groups or chaperones may choose to buy a hot lunch in the Atomic Café on Level One. A variety of food is available from main dishes to pizza. Please let the Call Center know if your group will be eating in the Café because seating is only available to those who purchase food there. Lines may be lengthy around lunchtime, so you may want to stagger your arrival time in the café.

Option C: Box Lunches

SSA (COSI's in house food service provider) will deliver box lunches to your group in the Group Lunch Room. Lunch orders must be reserved and paid in full 2 weeks prior to your visit date.

Menu options:

All box lunches come with: Apple sauce Cinnamon Graham Cracker Cookies Potato Chips Bottle Water Choose from: 1 - Shaved Turkey & Cheddar on Artisan Whole Grain Wheat Bread (cheese optional) 2 - Grilled Mediterranean Wrap with Seasonal Vegetables and Ranch Dressing (Ranch optional) 3 - Sun Butter and Jelly Sandwich *Gluten Free available upon request

Checks, money orders, and credit cards are accepted for payment. Please include the invoice number, name of the school or group, visit date, and group leader's name with payments. Make check out to "COSI."

You may make changes to your guaranteed reservation up to 2 weeks prior to your visit date. Please call the COSI Call Center at COSI 614.228.COSI or 888.819.COSI, if you need to change your box lunch reservation numbers.

Refund and Cancellation Policy

In the event of a cancellation of box lunches, you must notify the COSI Call Center at least 2 weeks prior to your visit. No refunds are issued for cancellations less than 2 weeks in advance.

Field trip programs, farm senses.

Age Groups: Preschool Program Times: 1 ½ to 2 hours (Morning or Afternoon), with the option for lunch before or after program times Price: $8 per participant & $8 adult chaperones

Children interact with our plants and animals during opportunities designed to engage all five senses. Children visit and pet chickens, equines, sheep, and rabbits, as available, as well as enjoy our vegetable and flower gardens. Tasting, touching, smelling, hearing, and seeing GHF plants and animals gives children a whole new level of understanding about farming and the natural world as well as a foundation for scientific learning.

Food Sources

Age Groups: Kindergarten, Grade 1, and Grade 2 Program Times: 2 hours  (Morning or Afternoon), with the option for lunch before or after program times Price: $8 per participant & $8 adult;  4-hour Food Sources may be scheduled at $10 per person

Students discover how their basic needs are fulfilled by a farm when they witness food and fiber while it’s still growing. Through observation and hands-on activities, students also see how the needs of crops and farm animals are met on the farm. This program includes activities such as collecting fresh eggs, grinding animal feed, meeting and petting animals, planting and tasting seasonal vegetables, and searching for pollinators.

This program helps students understand that healthy soil is the most important structure on a farm and the way that all life is connected.

Local Ohio History

Through historical interpretation, students uncover how the Gorman family grew their own food and lived on this land through different time periods from 1835 to the present, and how this local history of agriculture is an important part of Ohio history. Students take part in chores that children of the Gorman family would have done and learn to how make a handmade toy or craft to bring the history lesson home.

Soil Health: Inquiry-Based Learning

Age Group: Grade 5+ Program Times: 4 hours (full day), time for lunch included during the day Price: $10 per participant & $10 adult

Lessons from a Columbus Symphony morning dress rehearsal

I enjoy hearing the Columbus Symphony perform, but am often too busy to attend weekend concerts.

  • So I went to my first Friday morning dress rehearsal as part of our "Never Have I Ever" series .

Why it matters: It is a mesmerizing experience to watch and hear true artists at work.

The intrigue: The Ohio Theatre was surprisingly crowded with retirees, families and student field trips. I even saw a well-behaved baby in the balcony.

  • My $16 seat, which came with complimentary doughnuts and coffee, would have cost $84 for a normal show.

What they said: "You know this is just a practice, right?" guest conductor Carl St. Clair joked to the audience.

  • "Most cities don't have this many people at a regular concert."

How it worked: St. Clair conducted each piece in full, shouting things to players like "phrasing!" that could be heard across the concert hall.

  • Musicians occasionally stood during the music to ask one another questions, while pianist Claire Huangci wrote notes on her tablet.
  • After finishing, the group ran back through a few trouble spots before moving to the next piece.

Between the lines: The rehearsal offered life lessons you don't often receive at 10 in the morning:

🎹 Tchaikovsky is still Tchaikovsky, even in jeans.

  • Audience members and musicians alike wore very casual dress — Huangci performed in a tank top and jeans — proving that great art trumps formality.
  • Classical music can feel stuffy, but the Columbus Symphony tries to make it accessible through pop culture tie-ins , family shows and performing in other communities .

😤 Haters are always gonna hate.

  • Tchaikovsky learned this long before Taylor Swift did. He first showed his magnificent Piano Concerto No. 1 to a friend, who dismissed it as worthless and needing to be rewritten.
  • But he published the concerto as is. Audiences in Columbus and around the globe are still paying to hear it nearly 150 years later.

❤ There's no substitute for live music.

  • Another rehearsal highlight was " Alone Together, " a stirring piece from 2021 depicting life and death during the pandemic.
  • The shared listening experience, with all the memories evoked, was indescribably beautiful.

If you go: Three more dress rehearsals are planned for this season in April and May. Get tickets .

What's next: The group, which has played at the ornate venue for over 50 years, plans to build a dedicated performance space on the Scioto Peninsula that could open as early as 2028, WOSU reports .
