Table of Contents

Most people will probably find that retro RVs look cool. And indeed, these days, anything from a couple of decades back is going to be an eye-catcher.

However, in our opinion, there is more to retro RVs than mere looks. For us, they are a reminder of the long, long path that RVs have passed in order to become what they are today.

Even a 10 years old RV is going to lag behind modern units in terms of comfort and efficiency, let alone RVs that are 20, 30, or even half a century old. But without them, without their downsides which needed a solution, we wouldn’t have what we have today.

To allow us to get acquainted with the old era (and for some to actually relive it), many RV manufacturers offer classic lines that pay homage to their predecessors. Looking vintage from outside, these RVs provide you with everything a modern RV has on the inside. Such RVs are the topic of today’s material – meet 12 retro campers that are actually new!

12 Vintage RVs That Are Actually New

Riverside retro travel trailer.

Riverside’s Retro travel trailers may not seem particularly retro by their design. There are many modern travel trailers that have the same body shape, and it doesn’t look the most vintage in the world. However, the body shape of this RV was actually been quite common in the 60s and 70s.

The body shape may not appear to be retro, but this RV’s color scheme and wheels do attach a strong retro vibe to it. This retro feel has been preserved inside as well thanks to the checkered flooring paired with the wood paneling and furniture.

Aside from functionality and the retro vibe, what is remarkable about the Retro line is that there are many floorplans to choose from it. They range from 13 feet 8 inches to 31 feet in length, so people can get either lightweight and compactness or comfort from the Retro line. And, in spite of giving a classical vibe, all the Retro floorplans are no less equipped than any other comparable modern travel trailer.

The smaller floorplans obviously only have the most basic amenities like some sleeping and kitchen space, while the larger models start to gradually add up things like sofas, dinettes, bathrooms, entertainment centers, or whatnot.

Of course, there is more room in the larger floorplans as well, albeit at the cost of increased weight and price. But Retro travel trailers don’t get that heavy – up to 5,675 pounds on average in the longest model, which is a surprisingly low number for a 31-foot travel trailer.

Scamp Travel Trailers

Scamp Travel Trailers are a popular choice among campers who value convenience, comfort, and durability in their travel trailers. Renowned for their top-tier construction, these trailers are recognized as some of the best-quality RVs on the market. They are built to last, featuring a solid fiberglass construction that is lightweight, yet sturdy enough to withstand the rigors of outdoor adventures.

The interior of Scamp travel trailers is thoughtfully designed to maximize space and functionality. It boasts comfortable sleeping arrangements, a functional kitchen area, and a convenient dining area. Depending on the model, these trailers can comfortably sleep up to six people.

The kitchen is equipped with essential appliances like a stove, sink, and refrigerator, making meal preparation a breeze even while on the road. With plenty of storage compartments available, campers can keep their belongings organized and easily accessible.

Beyond their practical design, Scamp travel trailers also prioritize comfort and style. The interiors are tastefully furnished and well-ventilated, providing a cozy and inviting atmosphere for campers. Various customization options are available as well, allowing owners to add personal touches to their trailers.

Safety is another key aspect of Scamp travel trailers. They feature reliable braking systems, sturdy construction materials, and well-designed layouts to ensure the safety of their users. Each trailer undergoes rigorous inspection and testing to ensure it meets high safety standards before it leaves the factory.

In summary, Scamp travel trailers stand out for their superior quality, practical design, and safety features. Whether you’re an experienced camper or a newbie at outdoor adventures, these trailers offer the convenience, comfort, and reliability you need for an enjoyable and worry-free camping experience.

Gulf Stream Vintage Cruiser

The Gulf Stream Vintage Travel Trailer is a top-of-the-line camper that combines the timeless charm of vintage trailers with modern comforts and conveniences. The exterior of the Gulf Stream Vintage Trailers is designed to evoke the classic look of yesteryear’s campers, with a distinctive shape, retro-style wheels, and bright, nostalgic colors. The trailer’s aesthetic appeal is further enhanced by its polished aluminum front and rear ends, which not only add to its visual appeal but also provide additional durability.

Stepping inside the Gulf Stream Vintage Travel Trailer, one is immediately struck by its best-quality interiors that manage to blend retro charm with contemporary comfort. The interiors are spacious and beautifully designed, featuring birch wood paneling, checkered flooring, and vintage-styled appliances. Despite its nostalgic feel, the trailer is equipped with all modern amenities such as a full-size refrigerator, microwave oven, cooktop, and a comfortable bed that can accommodate up to four people.

In terms of performance, the Gulf Stream Vintage Travel Trailer does not disappoint. It is designed for easy towing, with a lightweight construction that makes it perfect for even small SUVs to handle. Its compact size does not compromise on storage space as it features ample cabinetry and closet space for all your camping needs.

Moreover, the trailer is built to withstand various weather conditions, ensuring you a comfortable stay regardless of the outdoor environment.

The Gulf Stream Vintage Trailer offers the perfect blend of vintage charm and modern functionality making it a top choice for campers looking for the best quality travel trailers. Whether you’re planning a weekend getaway or a cross-country road trip, these trailers promise to provide a comfortable and memorable camping experience.

Happier Camper HC-1 Travel Trailer

The Happier Camper HC-1 travel trailer really doesn’t look that remarkable from the outside. It just looks like a generic travel trailer somewhere from the 1960s. But when you look inside, you realize that this is the most unique RV on our list.

The HC-1 offers “ultimate flexibility”, as Happier Camper writes, to its owners. The interior of this travel trailer has a modular design, which allows you to adapt it to your current needs. Need a dining area? The corresponding Happier Camper Adaptiv blocks would allow you to have it. Need just a large sleeping area? Again, it is easy to achieve with the Adaptive blocks.

As a small downside, you need to purchase some of the Adaptiv blocks yourself, which can add up to your costs quite significantly. Plus, you will have to assemble and disassemble the interior every time you need a change. On the other hand, you are basically getting multiple small travel trailers in a hull of one!

The HC-1 camper also is a very lightweight travel trailer, which is going to interest those people whose vehicles don’t have a high towing capacity. This travel trailer weighs just 1,100 pounds when empty. With add-ons and packages, it weighs 1,200 to 1,800 pounds on average, which is lighter than the vast majority of other RVs on this list.

With a length of only 13 feet, this travel trailer is also very compact. It can’t boast the freedom of movement of larger RVs, but what larger RVs can’t boast, on the other hand, is the modularity of the HC-1 camper. And for some people, the flexibility of the HC-1 camper is going to be worth more than the comfort of a longer travel trailer.

Airstream Sport Travel Trailer

Airstream doesn’t produce the cheapest RVs out there. Their high-end travel trailers , for example, cost as much as cheap class A motorhomes , so Airstream RVs definitely aren’t for those who are on a tight budget.  Check our article on why Airstreams are so expensive for more information.

However, in terms of luxury, no cheaper RVs can compare with what Airstream has to offer.

When it comes to the design of the Sport travel trailer line , it is quite confusing. On one hand, you have a shape that definitely looks retro. Furthermore, the design of Airstream RVs is actually indeed retro since it has been used by Airstream since at least the 60s.

On the other hand, the Sport travel trailer’s material and color choice make it appear sleek, and sleek with retro is quite a weird combination. The metallic color gives a little bit of a raw appearance to this travel trailer as well.

So at first glance, you are getting a wide gamut of emotions and contradicting associations. This doesn’t make the Sport travel trailer look bad – on the contrary, we think that it is quite an eye-catcher.

Airstream travel trailers traditionally have a luxury vibe in them embodied in material choice. This vibe can be sensed in this travel trailer as well. Some people may argue that it doesn’t make the price tag of Airstream RVs worth it, but there will be people out there who will adore what they have to offer.

The Sport travel trailer line has two floorplans, which allows us to again pinpoint the key differences between them. Let’s begin with the larger 22FB floor plan.

Measuring 21 feet 8 inches in length, the 22FB floorplan offers better comfort for an extra $10k on top of the cheaper floorplan’s price tag. The most remarkable feature in this floorplan is the roomy bathroom that occupies the entire width of the RV’s rear. This bathroom definitely isn’t the biggest on the market, but it sure does have plenty of wiggle room to offer.

In the living area, there is likewise plenty of room for movement. The kitchen area also boasts 2 sinks, a larger 4.2 cubic feet refrigerator, a 2-burner cooktop, and a convection microwave oven.

The 16 feet 4-inch long 16RB floorplan offers basically the same amenities as its larger counterpart but in a more compact package. The kitchen area has only one sink and a smaller refrigerator, and the bathroom isn’t the same roomy one as in the 22FB. However, the 16RB floorplan still has the 4 sleeping spots that the 22FB had.

And not to extend our overview too much, we’ll say in conclusion that the Airstream Sport travel trailer line seems to be made for those who are looking for luxury in a smaller package.

Airstream International Signature Travel Trailer

And, needless to say, bigger size means more comfort indoors. The shortest floorplan in this series – the 23CB – is 23 feet long, so even the most minimalist package is going to have a lot of comfort to offer. And the 30 feet 11-inch models are the peak of comfort in this line.

There are 12 floorplans in the International Signature series. However, since the set of amenities offered by them is generally the same, it’s pretty easy to draw parallels and pinpoint differences between them.

Long story short, the main thing that differs between the floorplans in the International Signature line is the amount of free room and comfort you are getting inside. The price and storage requirements of the floorplans obviously go up the higher up the size you go, but those can be considered mere side effects of the increased comfort.

What stays unchanged in all the floorplans though is the number of sleeping spots. The models in this entire line have 6 sleeping spots. This definitely isn’t the most on the market, but that’s the most you are going to get from the RVs on this list.

You could again say that the International Signature line is overpriced and that you can get a comparable amount of comfort from a travel trailer that costs half the price. And you’d be right. However, we again assert that the classical Airstream design and luxury are key in these travel trailers.

Most people won’t even need what the International Signature offers, but since Airstream is making these models, there definitely are people out there who are ready to pay the money.

Airstream Classic Travel Trailer

The pricing of the Classic trailers may be completely unreasonable, and only a few people may actually go and get themselves an Airstream Classic RV. However, we nonetheless decided to include it in our list due to the wow effect it produces. The Classic travel trailer line really awakened the RV geeks in us.

From the outside, the Classic travel trailers are no different than their smaller Airstream counterparts. They still have that metallic body shape that gives a strong retro vibe. On the inside though, things are way different.

There are 4 floorplans in the Classic line – two 31-foot 3-inch floorplans and two 33-foot floorplans. There are many similarities between these floorplans, but the longer ones really have something to drop your jaw.

The 33-foot Classic floorplans have a truly enormous bathroom in the rear. It probably wouldn’t be a stretch to say that this is one of the biggest, if not the biggest bathrooms in any RV. Heck, it is even bigger than bathrooms in smaller residences! Aside from that, it even has a heated floor.

The 31 feet 3-inch floorplans have a more traditional RV bathroom. Instead, they have a roomier seating area in the front end of the RV.

Aside from the bathrooms, what also differs between the long and short floorplans is their entertainment area. The entertainment areas in the 33-foot RVs are equipped with 60-inch TVs, while the smaller floorplans can’t boast such a thing.

One crucial thing we didn’t mention is how luxurious the interior of the Classic travel trailers is. To put it short, the Classic travel trailer is a Maybach of travel trailers. Aside from that, the plentitude of wooden elements in it adds a little bit of a retro vibe to the inside.

In the end, no matter how ridiculous the Classic travel trailers may be, they are really a spectacle on the RV market.

Egg Camper Travel Trailer

If you’ve been into RVing for some time, then you’ve probably heard a word or two about the Egg Camper . While this travel trailer is no longer in production, it still remains a relevant model, and you may even be able to get one for yourself.

The Egg Camper arguably doesn’t look as retro as some other RVs on our list. We’d say that it is somewhere from the 70s or 80s, while there have been models on our list with a 60s vibe. Not everyone will like the latter, so the looks of the Egg Camper are perfectly alright.

To justify its name, this travel trailer has an egg-yoke yellow canopy, which also makes this travel trailer look cute.

Inside, this travel trailer is similar to other travel trailers of comparable size. However, the Egg Camper’s interior looks very plain and simple. To soften the frankly quite boring white color scheme, the Egg Camper has a couple of wooden elements in it. Doors, hatches, tabletops, and the like are made from wood to add a little more variety to the interior.

At a glance, the set of amenities in the Egg Camper is very similar to that of any travel trailer regardless of size. You have a bathroom, a kitchen, a dining area, and some sleeping space, just like in monsters like the Airstream Classic. Of course, the scale of things is much smaller in this travel trailer.

Lastly, measuring 17 feet in length, this is quite a compact travel trailer, so it won’t be providing its occupants with too much free room. On the other hand, with a weight of 2,000 pounds, it’s a more suitable choice for owners of less powerful towing vehicles.

Oliver Legacy Elite II Camper Trailer

On the outside, the Oliver Legacy Elite II camper trailer catches the eye with the already familiar retro design. What differs in this RV from most other RVs is the fiberglass hull. A rather pricey material, fiberglass is lighter and stronger than many metals used in RV construction.

On the inside, Oliver boasts a “luxurious interior with plenty of space” for its occupants. The Legacy Elite II camper trailer seems to be not as posh as Airstream RVs, but it definitely is far ahead of regular travel trailers.

Oliver offers 2 floorplans for the Legacy Elite II camper trailer. They are identical except for sleeping space arrangement – one floorplan has a full-size rear bed, while the other has a twin bed.

Both floorplans feature a roomy bathroom that occupies the entire width of the camper’s front, just like it was in the longer floorplan of the Airstream Sport travel trailer. The bathroom in the Legacy Elite II RV is a full bathroom with a sink, shower, toilet, and even a linen closet. What’s even better is that it has plenty of wiggle room inside.

Not only the bathroom is well-equipped in the Oliver Legacy Elite II camper trailer – it has got a wide gamut of appliances in the kitchen, an entertainment area with a 24-inch flat-screen TV and 4 speakers by default, and many other things to make your ride more fun and, more importantly, safer.

A thing that Oliver also boasts is that they sell their RVs directly to the buyer without any dealers in between. Those who’d like to work directly with manufacturers will most likely appreciate this approach.

Timberleaf Pika Travel Trailer

The Pika travel trailer by Timberleaf features a classic teardrop design, which has been and still is quite popular in smaller RVs. But in spite of its compact size, the Pika has a couple of features to boast nonetheless. In particular, the most remarkable thing in this travel trailer is its kitchen.

Timberleaf has decided to place the kitchen outdoors under the RV’s trunk. On one hand, this allows for more room inside, and on the other, you essentially get an outdoor kitchen in this travel trailer.

The kitchen in the Pika travel trailer has ample countertop room in, which is quite impressive for its size. As Timberleaf writes, this travel trailer has a 21 x 54-inch main countertop and a 10-inch deep upper countertop. The countertop room is arguably overkill for the RV’s size, though it, on the other hand, will allow for more convenience while cooking.

In terms of appliances, the kitchen isn’t that equipped by default – it just comes with a Dometic 35-liter refrigerator. So unless you will be bringing a portable cooktop with you, the stock Pika travel trailer probably won’t be good for longer trips.

Speaking of cooktops, Timberleaf has equipped the kitchen area with a couple of outlets to allow for appliance connection. There also are 4 USB ports in the kitchen’s electric panel, so you could, for example, listen to your favorite music from a laptop while preparing food.

Inside, the Pika travel trailer is essentially a bedroom. It has a 54 x 75-inch mattress with two sleeping spots, most importantly. Right above the head end of the mattress is a skylight – a nice addition that makes this RV feel more open, as well as allows the occupants to enjoy the night sky.

In terms of storage, the Pika RV is pretty nice as well. It has several mesh pockets scattered around, as well as a full-width cabinet above the bed’s foot end.

The Pika teardrop RV is also very lightweight when empty – it weighs just 970 pounds, which makes it the lightest RV on our list. Aside from that, it is just 11 feet 10 inches long, which makes it the most compact RV on the list as well. So those who have very limited towing and storage capacities will probably appreciate the lightness of the Pika.

Timberleaf Classic Teardrop Travel Trailer

The Timberleaf Classic Teardrop travel trailer is essentially a bigger Pika. This RV improves drastically on the main feature of the Pika trailer – the kitchen.

The kitchen area in the Classic Teardrop travel trailer is, first of all, noticeably roomier than in the Pika. It still has 2 countertops, but they are deeper and wider, allowing for more convenience while cooking.

Furthermore, the lower countertop is equipped with a sink and faucet, things that were absent in the Pika RV. Plus, Timberleaf offers an optional portable stove and a custom-made cooler to those who want to be able to make food without having to buy additional equipment.

Since the Classic Teardrop is larger than the Pika, it has more space inside. This allowed Timberleaf to equip it with a larger 57 x 80-inch bed, which is a little bigger than what the Pika has.

Otherwise, we’d say that the interiors of the two Timberleaf campers are very similar. The Classic Teardrop doesn’t have mesh pockets, but it does have the same window layout that the Pika has, as well as a storage cabin in the rear.

The Classic Teardrop travel trailer isn’t that big, but it definitely isn’t as compact and lightweight as the Pika. The Classic Teardrop measures 15 feet in length and weighs 1,400 pounds when empty, so it still is a very compact and lightweight RV.

All in all, the Timberleaf Classic Teardrop retains the character of Pika. Not only that, it makes it better and more comfortable for travel.

Airstream Bambi Sport 16

The sleek, silver bullet exterior is made from a semi-monocoque aluminum superstructure that not only provides a timeless appeal but also ensures durability and lower towing weight. The overall length of the travel trailer is 15 feet 11 inches, making it perfect for those seeking a camper that is easy to maneuver and park.

Inside the Airstream Bambi 16RB Travel Trailer, you will find a well-thought-out layout designed to maximize space and functionality. The front of the camper houses a dedicated bed with a Tuft & Needle adaptive foam mattress, ensuring restful sleep after a day of adventure. Adjacent to the bed, there’s a dinette that can be converted into an additional sleeping space if needed.

The interior décor is tastefully done, featuring handcrafted Italian Lite-Ply laminated cabinetry, seamless vinyl flooring, and ultra leather seating that speaks to the quality of the camper.

The rear part of the Airstream Bambi 16RB Travel Trailer features a fully equipped kitchenette and a wet bath. The kitchenette comes with a two-burner gas stove, a microwave, a stainless steel sink, and a refrigerator. The wet bath, although compact, comes complete with a toilet, shower, and sink.

The trailer also boasts panoramic windows that offer incredible views of your surroundings while letting in plenty of natural light.

Airstream has not compromised on technology and safety in the Bambi 16RB Travel Trailer. It comes equipped with an A/C, furnace, and water heater for comfort in varying climates. There’s also an onboard monitor for systems like batteries, freshwater tanks, and propane levels.

In terms of safety, the trailer has a 4-manual stabilizer jack, a steel entry step, and a city water inlet with a water pressure regulator.

The Airstream Bambi 16RB Travel Trailer, with its quality construction, thoughtful design, and impressive features, is a camper that offers the freedom to explore without compromising on comfort and style. Whether you are a seasoned camper or new to the world of travel trailers, the Bambi 16RB is designed to make every journey unforgettable.

Published on January 9th, 2020 by Ray & Tammy Roman This post was updated on June 7th, 2023

Are you considering the purchase of a retro camper? These days you don’t have to buy an old camper to get that vintage look you’ve always wanted.

Travel trailer manufacturers have designed and built retro-styling but modern features and construction. Let’s look at the Top 8 Retro Campers that we think you’ll love.

Our Retro Campers Top Picks

Specifications are subject to change, consult the manufacturers or dealers’ website. Prices are based on average prices found on RV trader and may not be what you actually find when you go shopping.

#1 Happier Camper HC1

Happier Camper Retro Campers

The Happier Camper is an all fiberglass modern camper with unique retro-styling. It offers an advanced modular interior system that lets you use pre-designed cubes to add functionality to the interior.

The Happier Camper is geared towards the younger generation with its cool styling. You can easily stick a dirt bike, mountain bike, and even a kayak inside. It can easily be towed with smaller SUVs and cars.

There is a lot we like about the Happier Camper. We think the modular system lends itself well to just about any floor layout you might want.

Recently a new Happier Camper retro model was added; it’s called the HCT. The HCT is the big brother of the HC1. It has two dedicated living spaces, a bathroom, and a kitchenette. It may look like a retro camper, but it has all the modern features you would expect.

The look is reminiscent of the canned ham campers.

For Tammy and I, if we had to choose one, it would be the Happier Camper Traveler. It is a larger, more comfortable camper with an integrated Adaptiv bathroom and kitchenette. They are expensive and nowhere near the price of a used retro camper, but they are built to last.

#2 Riverside RV Retro

8 Awesome Retro Campers

The Riverside RV Retro has all the styles of classic travel trailers. From the whitewall tires to the red and white color scheme, it oozes the 50s and 60s. It’s available in 14-floor plans, including a travel trailer toy hauler .

It’s loaded with modern features such as a microwave, Bluetooth radio with inside and outside speakers, birch interior, USB ports, and more.

Riverside Retro is by far our favorite retro trailer. Not only does it have that beautiful vintage RV camper look, it has about everything you need for a fun adventure.

They make several models of this retro travel trailer, and they all have the same beautiful vintage look. They are a bit more than typical campers, but we think they are worth it if you look for that classic retro camper look.

The Retro 193 is our favorite model from the Riverside RV lineup. We like that it has a walk-around Murphy bed that converts to a retro-red sofa, the shower and toilet are separate, which we also like, and we like the spacious kitchen and full-size fridge. Here are the specifications of the Retro 193.

#3 Gulfstream Vintage Cruiser

Gulfstream Vintage Cruiser vintage camper

The spirit of the fun-loving ’50s is alive and well in the Gulfstream Vintage Cruiser . It has a laminated wall construction and a one-piece laminated roof.

It is very light and aerodynamic. You get state-of-art features in a design that brings back the fun vibe and simple lifestyle of the 1950s.

You’ll also find vintage exterior graphics, moon hubcaps, stainless steel microwave, and a 2-burner stove with cover. Inside you get a classic camper drape package and your choice of 4 interior color combinations.

Tammy and I were able to do a walk-through of a Vintage Cruiser during the 2020 OKC RV and Boat Show. We fell in love with the interior right from the start. You can read our review of the Vintage Cruiser here .

Our favorite Vintage Cruiser model is the 19ERD due to the shower being on one side of the camper and the toilet and vanity across the aisle. The queen bed has space on either side so no more jumping over your spouse to get to the bathroom in the middle of the night.

#4 Heartland Terry Classic

Heartland Terry Classic vintage camper

The last year of production I can find on the Heartland Terry Classic is the 2019 model, which means it came out in the latter part of 2018. I’ve not seen anything for a 2020 model so there is a possibility it is not being built anymore.

When it comes to looks, I’m torn between seeing it as a retro camper or a messed-up futuristic camper.

There is a lot of shiny aluminum and a boxy exterior reminiscent of a vintage camper however, the big Airstream-type panoramic front window throws things off for me.

The exterior is an old camper style; however, the interior is all modern. This is a very nice retro camper. The huge front bay window is exceptionally nice and adds a cool 50’s retro look to the entire camper.

The TE V21 is the floor plan in the video above. Here is the specification for it.

#5 Barefoot Camper

Barefoot Camper retro camper

The Barefoot Camper is a modern camper with retro styling. It is has a hand-built fiberglass shell and comes in a range of colors.

The interior can be customized to your liking and includes a kitchen, bathroom, sofa, wardrobes, and storage.

Since it is lightweight, slim, and aerodynamic, it is super easy to tow. Barefoot Caravan recently announced that nuCampRV would bring the Barefoot to the US in 2020.

#6 Serro Scotty

The Serro Scotty has a long history dating back to 1956 when John Serro built a 16 1/2′ trailer in his garage. Unfortunately, no one would buy his first model.

Though considered a vintage camper since it is not new construction, I placed it here simply because of its history.

The next year Serro introduced a 10′ teardrop travel trailer called the Sportsman. In 1960 the teardrop shape was replaced in favor of the tear-drop “swoosh” shaped wheel well opening. In 1995 they even added motorhomes to their lineup.

In 1997 the Serro manufacturing plant burns down, and they stopped making travel trailers. Scotty is still in business making Police and Fire Safety trailers. in 2016, Litte Guy Worldwide, well-known for its teardrops campers, announced they would be building retro “Serro Scottys” in 2017. From what I can find, they build one model.

#7 Aristocrat Campers

Aristocrat Campers vintage and retro camper

Aristocrat campers were first built in 1956 by Irving Perch. The last unit rolled out in 1974. One of the first models was the Lo Liner because it could easily fit in a residential garage if you purchased the optional metal wheels.

This one is not necessarily a retro camper and more of a vintage camper because they are no longer made this is not new construction.

But like the Scotty above, these campers have a terrific look and are well known in the vintage camper circle.

The Lo Liner was positioned in the market as a versatile vacation trailer designed for year-round use. It included all the essential features such as a bed, dining table, refrigerator, and sofa. Aristocrat had ten models available.

#8 Dub Box USA Dinky

Dub Box USA Dinky is new but has a retro look

I love the look of the Dinky Sleepers by Dub Box USA . The Dinky is their version of a teardrop trailer with modern features but a unique vintage VW look.

The Dinky includes a custom-made Queen mattress; if you want an outdoor kitchen, you can get that too.

Lots of options are available such as privacy window shutters, roof rack, A/C heater combo, portable cooler, and much more. They even make an empty Dinky suitable as a toy hauler or for business merchandise.

Retro Campers Summary

Who says you can’t have a nice selection of retro campers with modern construction techniques and features? These days there appears to be a desire to go back to the “good ole days” of RVing, and these vintage-inspired campers will take you there.

Most of these campers will cost more than typical travel trailers, so be prepared when you start looking around for one. However, we think the cost is well worth considering the unique styling, the retro look, and the modern amenities.

If shopping for used retro campers or one of the much older vintage travel trailers, note that it may require extensive renovations. There are some excellent resources on the web showing how to renovate a vintage camper.

There are also only stores that cater to vintage camper renovations, stock parts, and sometimes custom manufacturer parts. Vintage Trailer Supply is one of the vendors that come to mind.

Manu-Facts:

Gulf Stream RV Logo

Gulf Stream, a leading manufacturer of a full range of RV products was founded and is still owned by the Shea family, originating in the small community of Nappanee, Indiana in 1971.  Founder Jim Shea Sr. was inspired by the quintessentially entrepreneurial spirit of Elkhart County Indiana, and was particularly to the heritage of craftsmanship found in Nappanee, where ties to Amish and Mennonite traditions of handcrafted furnishings and homes were still strong.

Back then, the family operation consisted of manufactured housing (Fairmont Homes). Jim Shea built the operation from the ground up.  He ran the show and his sons joined him learning the business through good old fashioned hands-on experience.

In 1983, the Shea’s established Gulf Stream Coach producing a top quality line of motor homes, travel trailers, and fifth wheel trailers. Gulf Stream’s first RV, the Foxfire travel trailer, benefited from techniques that had made their housing company successful. It allowed Gulf Stream Coach to put things in the Foxfire that weren’t seen in travel trailers.

The company continued to grow and in the 1990’s the three sons assumed the lead in day to day operations.  The family patriarch and company founder was recognized for his career contributions to the recreational vehicle and manufactured housing industries by being named to the MH/RV Hall of Fame

Today, Gulf Stream Coach is the industry's leading family-owned, family-operated RV manufacturer, encompasses 22 brands with over 140 different models — all brought to you by the efforts of more than 1,500 dedicated associates.  Over its history, the company has produced almost 300,000 recreation vehicles, contributing to the well-being and family fun of hundreds of thousands of people across the US and Canada.

It's common to find the Shea family at RV shows and campgrounds, enjoying Gulf Stream products, and interacting with customers, identifying features they consider important, bringing those ideas back to the Gulf Stream Coach team.

The family links run deep at Gulf Stream, among the skilled craftspeople who build the product, through the family-based management, on to family-based RV dealerships across the United States and Canada, and finally, to the families who buy and enjoy Gulf Stream Coach products.

In today's world where huge corporations work to satisfy stockholders and financiers, the people at Gulf Stream Coach are dedicated to make families - ours, dealers, and owners - happy and proud.

Vintage vs. Modern Vintage

Ah, yes. The age-old argument between retro purists and the new school is the question:

“Should I go full-on vintage or go with a modern vintage model?”

Honestly, we think this is based on your personal choice and taste! The best thing about retro campers is you can do anything you’d want with this anyway, and the possibilities are endless!

If you’re willing to SPEND EXTRA and take the time to maintain a full-on vintage RV, then go! It is definitely a fulfilling experience.

  • The way of going with modern vintage models though is it complies with modern safety precautions while you’re on your trip.
  • Going with modern retro campers gives you the opportunity to experience the convenience of MODERN TECH.

You can’t go wrong with a vintage exterior for personality, and a functional and comfortable interior, right? Yes, we know YOU ALL LOVE blasting your favorite tunes while you’re on your way!

The choice is ultimately up to how you’d love to take on your adventures.

Things to Consider for Your New RV

If you’re planning to take the jump and invest in the retro campers lifestyle, you can keep some of these things in mind:

What Do You Want to Use It For?

Always consider this: A motorhome IS DIFFERENT from a weekend adventure capsule.

A small retro camper is ideal for weekend trips, while motorhomes can be better for long-term rides!

With Whom Will You Be Sharing the Experience With?

Size also matters! Making sure you have enough space will ensure comfort. Always consider this while browsing models you like.

What Functionalities Are You Considering?

Travel trailers these days offer a host of features. Models these days offer a tent slide, solar panel, and even amazing sound systems.

Considering this can also help you out in your budgeting plan!

What’s the Look You Want to Go For?

Choosing the right look from retro campers is definitely a satisfying experience. It’s best to choose one that you really like, as IT IS a real investment!

We’re not gonna lie, one of the most fun parts is picking the colors you like from the catalogs! CHANNEL YOUR PERSONALITY IN YOUR RETRO CAMPERS!

Where Are You Gonna Be Riding It?

Riding out to nature camps? Going on a snowy expedition? Always consider these things before you make your choice of choosing a model.

The materials of what the retro campers are made of makes a huge difference, so it’s best to consult with the manufacturer and even friends before you take the big jump!

Check out more things to consider here !

Where Can I Find Retro Campers?

Finding the right retro camper for you can be overwhelming to some, especially if you’re new to travel trailers! But don’t worry, we got your back!

RV Trader is a good place to check for what’s on sale in the RV world. You’ll find sweet deals and what other campers have for sale!

The best part about the site is you’d instantly see a detailed list of specs like the materials, what the exterior looks like, options for colors, and etc.

The site is doing a great job of fostering a community for retro campers and dealers that’s also extremely welcoming to beginners and experts alike!

Retro campers are definitely an amazing investment for the nomadic and the adventurous!

We highly encourage the Riverside White Water Retro as our top pick because of the value, looks, and most importantly function.

For those with value in mind, you CAN’T GO WRONG with the Gulf Stream Coach Vintage Cruiser for the pure usability and comfort you get.

Finally, budget-conscious are in for a treat with the Shasta Airflyte for everything it brings to the table at such affordability!

We hope you enjoyed our list of top recommendations for camper RVs, and we wish you a GREAT ADVENTURE!

Where the Vintage Trailer Fanatics Are

Where the Vintage Trailer Fanatics Are

vintage looking travel trailers

There’s nothing Johnny Agnew doesn’t like about vintage campers . As cofounder of Funky Junk Farms , a group of Americana aficionados with a passion for mobile homes, Agnew estimates he’s owned "at least" 100, including four that sit behind his Los Angeles area home right now. Though he says he’s not "outdoorsy," per se, he was drawn to trailer life after going on camping trips with his family as a kid and picking up his first trailer, a teardrop , when he was just 14. Forty-odd years later, Agnew has been recognized by his peers as a "pioneer" in the hobby, an honor he received while rolling deep with eight or nine other Funky Junk team members to the 2024 Modernism Week Vintage Trailer Show in Palm Springs, California. "Trailer people are like a family," he says. "And there’s something for everyone in this hobby depending on what your tastes are, from a teardrop to an Airstream to a Shasta."

The Modernism Week Vintage Trailer Show is one of more than 350 events that take place during the annual midcentury-modern architecture and design festival in Palm Springs, California.

The Modernism Week Vintage Trailer Show is one of more than 350 events that take place during the annual midcentury-modern architecture and design festival in Palm Springs, California.

All of those styles were represented in spades at the Vintage Trailer Show last weekend, as were other, less common brands, like Silver Streak , Serro Scotty , Zimmer , and Aloha . Made, mostly, between World War II and 1970, the 54 trailers on display were all driven to Palm Springs by their owners, who then opened their respective screen doors to ticket holders for tours. Now in its second decade, the show—which is typically held at the end of Modernism Week —drew about 2,000 people over two days, all of whom were welcome to check out everything from a beautifully restored wood-and-aluminum 1949 Spartan Royal Mansion to a tiny Airstream whose owners had modded it out to be used as a hangout during wedding receptions and live events. Trailer owners perched outside their campers in lawn chairs to chat with visitors and fellow enthusiasts, and visitors stopped at a camper canteen at the back of the lot to pick up a glass of lemonade, or a little Ball Jar full of cold, delicious pudding.

While vintage trailer rallies happen all over the country , the Palm Springs Modernism Week event is notable for its curation. Potential exhibitors have to apply and are selected by organizers Brad and Susan Taylor of Shiny Shacks , a vintage trailer business in Salem, Oregon. Only the best and most interesting submissions make the cut.

During the event, vintage trailer owners open their retrofitted campers to ticket holders for tours.

During the event, vintage trailer owners open their retrofitted campers to ticket holders for tours.

Exhibitors don’t just flaunt their hard work at the show, either: They also get to mix and mingle, both on-site and at Palm Springs’s  Vagabond Motor Hote l, where they’re all lodged during the event. (The downtown Palm Springs lot where the event takes place isn’t exactly camper friendly, with no available water lines, toilets, or hookups. There is power for the event, but it’s run off a giant generator with cords that run behind each row of campers.) Each year, attendees and exhibitors select their festival favorites, which are honored at an awards show and cocktail party on Saturday night.

"This show draws a wonderful mix of people that are really engaged," says Brandon Williams, owner of both an outdoor fireplace company and a 1970 Airstream Ambassador . "You get to see all these one of a kind rarities, and a lot of the attendees are craftsmen who are really at the top of their game. It feels good to pick their brains, just to see what they create and how, because each person has a little bit of a different style or a way to do what they do."

Each year, attendees and exhibitors select their favorite vintage trailers, which are honored at an awards show and cocktail party.

"If you restore hot rods, for instance, then it’s more about the mechanics," says Jessica Campbell, showing off her 1965 Cardinal . "With vintage trailers, there’s a lot more interior design involved. You can pick your colors and go wild or, like with our other trailer, we went very neutral inside so, depending on the show, I can change out all the decor to a different color scheme and theme, whether it’s pink flamingos or metallic glamour."

Some owners like to steer their restorations strictly toward the original look of their trailer, whether that means a gleaming chrome exterior or shiny, shellacked wooden walls. Robert Kubik, whose 1949 Spartan Royal Mansion has both, loves the fact that his trailer was built by an aircraft company. "It looks like an airplane and is built like an airplane," he says, "but it’s got all this wood inside so you walk in and it just feels like it hugs you with its curves and warmth."

Robert’s wife, Jessica, is enamored with the amount of storage they have in their 33-foot camper, which might look big compared to tinier vintage trailers but is actually dwarfed by modern RVs on most campgrounds. "You can camp in our trailer for weeks at a time and it just feels like you’re living somewhere new," she says. "You don’t have to have a brand new trailer to travel across the country. You just have to have intent, and you’ll be able to do it."

Some trailer owners prioritize steering their restorations toward the camper’s original look.

Some trailer owners prioritize steering their restorations toward the camper’s original look.

While the Kubiks love their Spartan, they—like a number of other exhibitors—were also using the event as a way to put their trailer on the market. They’re asking $100,000, which might seem high but is nothing compared to the cost of a new 33-foot Airstream, which goes for almost twice as much. A vintage trailer will also likely only appreciate, as well, while something brand new will almost certainly depreciate.

For other vintage trailer fans, though, there is a middle ground. When trailer restoration expert William Ward set out to revamp a 25-foot 1946 Spartan Manor for himself, he decided to forgo taking it back to its original look, choosing instead to give his midcentury camper a bit more modern flair. "We’ve done so many birch trailers for other people, so much walnut and maple, and you just get tired of it," he says. "It works for other people because they like that rich, beautiful shellacked wood, but for me, I thought, Let’s go a little out of the box and do a painted interior with white, solid surfaces and stainless steel." Everything in Ward’s Spartan is sleek, masculine, and multifunctional, right down to the four-square-foot "wet" bathroom, which wasn’t even a part of the vehicle’s original floor plan. ("Wet" means the shower and the toilet share the same space.) "Now," he says, "it’s a brand new trailer that can run safely down the road, but all inside that original shell."

A number of exhibitors use the Modernism Week Vintage Trailer Show as a way to put their camper on the market.

A number of exhibitors use the Modernism Week Vintage Trailer Show as a way to put their camper on the market.

That same kind of convenience didn’t speak to Curtis Richards when he picked up his ground level–entry 1949 Zimmer Wee Zim about two years ago. Only 40 Wee Zims were reportedly ever made and Richards’ is the only known survivor, making keeping the trailer’s original features a big priority to the owner. As an electrician by trade, Richards actually redid part of a restoration that had already been done on the trailer, taking out the existing modern USB sockets and installing period-correct GFCI screw-in glass fuses. "It’s all safe and everything works just like it did in 1949," Richards says, pointing out the trailer’s tiny two-burner stove, the foldout bed, and expandable entrance, which tips and folds into a perfect teardrop when it’s time to hit the road.

The number of late ’40s and early ’50s trailers at the show speaks not only to the popularity of that era’s aesthetic in modern collecting , but also to the skill that went into building each model. The 1950 Boles Aero on display, for instance, was made in Burbank, California, by a group of former Lockheed employees who banded together after WWII. Skilled in metalwork after years spent working on airplanes for the war effort, the Boles team was not only looking to use their craft, but also to fill a need—GIs coming home from war often needed places to live, and mobile homes were often the quickest, easiest, and most affordable answer.

"After the war, soldiers had to move to where the work was," says Paul Lacitinola, a 1948 Vagabond owner who has written two books on vintage campers and publishes Vintage Camper Trailers  magazine. "You had a very mobile society, with people who had to move maybe every six months depending on their jobs. Trailers were more for that kind of life back in the day, whereas now we just use them to go on a trip over the weekend."

The vintage trailers on display range from well-known favorites like Airstream and Shasta, to less common brands like Spartan, Aloha, and Silver Streak.

The vintage trailers on display range from well-known favorites like Airstream and Shasta, to less common brands like Spartan, Aloha, and Silver Streak.

Because these trailers were often built so durably, they’re also fairly easy to work on today—provided you can get the parts for your build. John Belobraydic says he bought his 1962 Shasta Astroflyte on a bit of a whim during the pandemic, just to have a project to work on outside his house. He just liked the look of the body, and he figured the construction and layout were fairly simple. With a little time, 3-D printing, and a whole mess of YouTube videos about vintage campers, he was able to finish up his trailer, which he and his wife have painted a nice, bright, vintage orange and white. "I’ve remodeled houses and rooms before," he says, "and this just felt like I was doing a room in a house that just so happened to also be on the road."

Take A Look Back At US Road Trips Through The Decades

Posted: December 30, 2023 | Last updated: December 30, 2023

Few travel experiences are more classically American than the road trip. With a sprawling transcontinental highway system linking almost every state, there’s no better way to travel the country, but the activity has changed dramatically throughout the last century. From the first cars, camper vans and RVs to today, here’s what the great American road trip looked like in every decade until the 2000s.

The open road

<p><a href="https://www.livescience.com/37538-who-invented-the-car.html">Although the first car was invented in 1886</a>, it wasn’t until a couple of decades later that automobiles became more popular and widespread in America. <p>You might be surprised to learn that the world’s first recreational vehicle, or RV, was invented back in 1915. 1910s: the first-ever RV

You might be surprised to learn that the world’s first recreational vehicle, or RV, was invented back in 1915. The 25-foot (7.6m) long automobile was created by Roland Conklin’s Gas-Electric Motor Bus Company and dubbed the Gypsy Van. It was kitted out with a kitchen, sleeping berths, folding tables, various small appliances, a generator and lighting. 1910s: touring the national parks

Since the first national parks were signed into law in the late 1800s, Americans began to gain a greater appreciation for the natural beauty in their backyard. Then the arrival of cars made it easier to access them – although it was still a privilege available to the wealthy few who were lucky enough to own one. Pictured here is a group of visitors on a guided “Two National Parks in Two Weeks” tour that swept through Rocky Mountain National Park and Yellowstone National Park.

As cars became increasingly efficient and powerful, they began to be used to haul small trailers. In 1919, a group known as the Tin Can Tourists of the World (TCT) was set up by trailer enthusiasts, who wanted to create safe and clean campgrounds for people to visit. It’s thought the name originated from the Ford T Model, or “Tin Lizzie”, which was the preferred set of wheels for many TCT members at the time. This campground in Gainesville, Florida was one of the first to be set up.

We wouldn’t dream of cutting a hole in a giant sequoia today, but back in 1881 a tunnel big enough to drive through was carved in the towering Wawona Tree in Yosemite National Park. Intended to be a tourist attraction, the 227-foot (69m) tree certainly drew in plenty of early road trippers such as this family. Sadly, the 2,100-year-old beauty fell in 1969, partly due to the fact the tunnel had weakened its base.

<p>While road trips may have been a way to unwind for many, motorcyclist and car racer Erwin Baker turned these cross-country journeys up a notch – by driving as fast as he could. In fact, he even earned the name “Cannonball”, after a newspaper compared him to a Cannonball Express train during one of his famous cross-country races. Shown here in 1923, in his Oldsmobile 30A surrounded by fans, the racer had just completed a trip from New York to Los Angeles by motocycle in a record-breaking 12-and-a-half days. </p>

The Great Depression shook the automobile industry, and sales declined throughout this decade. However, those who could afford to still enjoyed the freedom of the open road, traveling to the coast, the mountains and beyond. Here, road trippers consult a map while passing through the state of Georgia.

When people began to make longer journeys by car, it became apparent they’d need somewhere to keep their belongings and equipment. Enter the trunk. Early examples were fairly rudimentary, involving a trunk or suitcase attached to the back of the car – hence the name – but from around the 1930s, built-in storage became common in many cars. In this photograph, a couple loads the trunk with luggage for a trip.

1930s: boots allow people to pack luggage

The year 1936 saw the invention of the iconic Airstream Clipper, another mode of transport that would shape the image of the American road trip in decades to come. Despite costing a minimum of $1,465 or $30,300 in today’s money, sales went through the roof and it became popular with celebrities and political figures of the day, who had theirs customized with a variety of luxury finishes.

Although cars had been on the market for a few decades, the Great Depression and the Second World War had halted automakers’ growth and made most people unable to buy them. But in the postwar years, cars became increasingly affordable and many families were able to own them for the first time, which opened the world of road-tripping up to a wider audience.

1940s: automobile ownership on the rise

The national parks remained popular road trip destinations throughout the decade, as you can see from this black-and-white image of a car driving through Yellowstone in 1941. Parks’ infrastructure began to improve and families’ disposable income rose dramatically, making vacations more accessible for many too.

The postwar years saw a continued boom in car ownership across the country and road conditions had improved a great deal too. In 1959, an engineer at Volvo developed the three-point seatbelt (the kind we're familiar with today) which also made hitting the road a whole lot safer. Pictured here, a road-tripping couple check their map.</p>

In the early 1960s, Aristocrat was the premier manufacturer of RVs in the country and its lo-liner model, which could fit into a standard garage, was especially popular. Although the company was in business for less than two decades, its trailers were so well-made – using aircraft construction methods and high-quality metals – they can still sometimes be seen on the road today.

Camper vans became a big thing in the 1960s, when they were increasingly associated with the hippie counterculture of the time. Popular models included Volkswagen’s Type 1 and Type 2 Transporters and Dodge & Chevy’s Dodge A100. Seen here is a van parked up by the Teton Range of the Rocky Mountains in Wyoming.

1960s: camper vans make waves

Released in 1967, the Volkswagen Type 2 became a symbol of the hippie trail during the late 1960s and 1970s, since many made the journey in this van. This classic model wasn’t just reserved for bohemian types though – it was also popular with adventurers remaining on home soil. It’s pictured here on the shores of Little Duck Key in the Florida Keys.

1970s: VWs dominate the hippie trail

As motorhome and RV ownership grew, so did the need for more sites in which to park up. The successful management of public land, such as national parks and state parks, also helped to fuel camping’s popularity in this time. Seen here, a group of campers sit around by their trailer.

1970s: more campsites spring up

Trailer ownership waned in the late 1970s due to the recession and gas crisis, so much so that Airstream changed tack and released a motorhome for the first time. But its famous trailers remained in use. In this image from the decade, a couple gaze at New Mexico’s stunning mesa formations on a road trip, their Airstream attached to the back of a classic station wagon.

1970s: trailers experience a fall from grace

The iconic Route 66 was decommissioned in 1985, as newer, faster routes such as the Eisenhower Interstate had made it obsolete. Businesses along the highway, such as the Bel Air drive-in cinema in Mitchell, Illinois, suffered and many fell into disuse. However, 85% of the road remains and many road-trippers looking to revisit its nostalgic past still use it today.

Opened in 1959, Daytona International Speedway began to host popular car and motorcycle events from the 1960s, which drew in a huge range of spectators. Pictured here are eager National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing (NASCAR) fans – in their cars, camper vans and even rented U-Haul vans – gathered to watch the 1985 Pepsi Firecracker 400 race.

<p>After a lag in the 1970s due to the oil crisis, the RV industry boomed during the 1980s. Popular movies including National Lampoon's Vacation and The Blues Brothers, whose storylines heavily featured the motorhomes, helped to cement RVs’ place in popular culture. The iconic RV of the decade was the Fleetwood Bounder, released in 1985, which was the first of its kind to include basement storage – now a common fixture in these vehicles.</p>

Alaska has remained at the top of many tourists’ wish lists to this day and it’s easy to see why. In this 1990s photograph, a car travels along the scenic Seward Highway Trail on the Kenai Peninsula. We can bet they stopped a few times to take in the incredible views along the way.

Cute, vintage trailers such as this one came back in vogue in the 1990s and 2000s, alongside the faster and more efficient RVs and motorhomes of the day. Parked up in Shady Dell RV park in Bisbee, Arizona, the 1954 Crown trailer looks like an idyllic (and very cozy) home for two.

The Winnebago Adventurer, pictured, became increasingly popular throughout the 2000s and was the top-selling motorhome by 2012, according to data from Statistical Surveys. The Class A gas-powered RV had spacious and comfortable interiors, a well-equipped kitchen and ample storage space, making it a great choice for many families.

In the 2000s, drivers didn’t need to worry about packing snacks for their road trip as the era of drive-thru fast-food outlets was in full swing. In fact, you could also find drive-thru pharmacies, grocery stores, liquor stores, coffee shops and banks lining the country’s highways and byways by this point.

GPS technology became an integral part of many cars in the 2000s and 2010s, meaning many drivers swapped old-school maps for sat-navs. Meanwhile, Google Maps first appeared on a smartphone in 2007, providing even more navigation options – as well as raising some safety concerns, as some people started looking at their phones while driving. Pictured is a car driving through the scenic Monument Valley, Arizona using a sat-nav.

2010s: navigation gets an upgrade

Thankfully, modern technology has helped make road-tripping a little greener. In recent years, Airstream has released models of its classic trailers equipped with PV panels on their roofs, as well as add-on solar packs, allowing campers to harness the sun’s rays and provide off-grid energy. Pictured is an Airstream trailer with a solar kit in Ojo Caliente, New Mexico.

The Moscow Metro Museum of Art: 10 Must-See Stations

There are few times one can claim having been on the subway all afternoon and loving it, but the Moscow Metro provides just that opportunity.  While many cities boast famous public transport systems—New York’s subway, London’s underground, San Salvador’s chicken buses—few warrant hours of exploration.  Moscow is different: Take one ride on the Metro, and you’ll find out that this network of railways can be so much more than point A to B drudgery.

The Metro began operating in 1935 with just thirteen stations, covering less than seven miles, but it has since grown into the world’s third busiest transit system ( Tokyo is first ), spanning about 200 miles and offering over 180 stops along the way.  The construction of the Metro began under Joseph Stalin’s command, and being one of the USSR’s most ambitious building projects, the iron-fisted leader instructed designers to create a place full of svet (radiance) and svetloe budushchee (a radiant future), a palace for the people and a tribute to the Mother nation.

Consequently, the Metro is among the most memorable attractions in Moscow.  The stations provide a unique collection of public art, comparable to anything the city’s galleries have to offer and providing a sense of the Soviet era, which is absent from the State National History Museum.  Even better, touring the Metro delivers palpable, experiential moments, which many of us don’t get standing in front of painting or a case of coins.

Though tours are available , discovering the Moscow Metro on your own provides a much more comprehensive, truer experience, something much less sterile than following a guide.  What better place is there to see the “real” Moscow than on mass transit: A few hours will expose you to characters and caricatures you’ll be hard-pressed to find dining near the Bolshoi Theater.  You become part of the attraction, hear it in the screech of the train, feel it as hurried commuters brush by: The Metro sucks you beneath the city and churns you into the mix.

With the recommendations of our born-and-bred Muscovite students, my wife Emma and I have just taken a self-guided tour of what some locals consider the top ten stations of the Moscow Metro. What most satisfied me about our Metro tour was the sense of adventure .  I loved following our route on the maps of the wagon walls as we circled the city, plotting out the course to the subsequent stops; having the weird sensation of being underground for nearly four hours; and discovering the next cavern of treasures, playing Indiana Jones for the afternoon, piecing together fragments of Russia’s mysterious history.  It’s the ultimate interactive museum.

Top Ten Stations (In order of appearance)

Kievskaya station.

vintage looking travel trailers

Kievskaya Station went public in March of 1937, the rails between it and Park Kultury Station being the first to cross the Moscow River.  Kievskaya is full of mosaics depicting aristocratic scenes of Russian life, with great cameo appearances by Lenin, Trotsky, and Stalin.  Each work has a Cyrillic title/explanation etched in the marble beneath it; however, if your Russian is rusty, you can just appreciate seeing familiar revolutionary dates like 1905 ( the Russian Revolution ) and 1917 ( the October Revolution ).

Mayakovskaya Station

Mayakovskaya Station ranks in my top three most notable Metro stations. Mayakovskaya just feels right, done Art Deco but no sense of gaudiness or pretention.  The arches are adorned with rounded chrome piping and create feeling of being in a jukebox, but the roof’s expansive mosaics of the sky are the real showstopper.  Subjects cleverly range from looking up at a high jumper, workers atop a building, spires of Orthodox cathedrals, to nimble aircraft humming by, a fleet of prop planes spelling out CCCP in the bluest of skies.

Novoslobodskaya Station

vintage looking travel trailers

Novoslobodskaya is the Metro’s unique stained glass station.  Each column has its own distinctive panels of colorful glass, most of them with a floral theme, some of them capturing the odd sailor, musician, artist, gardener, or stenographer in action.  The glass is framed in Art Deco metalwork, and there is the lovely aspect of discovering panels in the less frequented haunches of the hall (on the trackside, between the incoming staircases).  Novosblod is, I’ve been told, the favorite amongst out-of-town visitors.

Komsomolskaya Station

Komsomolskaya Station is one of palatial grandeur.  It seems both magnificent and obligatory, like the presidential palace of a colonial city.  The yellow ceiling has leafy, white concrete garland and a series of golden military mosaics accenting the tile mosaics of glorified Russian life.  Switching lines here, the hallway has an Alice-in-Wonderland feel, impossibly long with decorative tile walls, culminating in a very old station left in a remarkable state of disrepair, offering a really tangible glimpse behind the palace walls.

Dostoevskaya Station

vintage looking travel trailers

Dostoevskaya is a tribute to the late, great hero of Russian literature .  The station at first glance seems bare and unimpressive, a stark marble platform without a whiff of reassembled chips of tile.  However, two columns have eerie stone inlay collages of scenes from Dostoevsky’s work, including The Idiot , The Brothers Karamazov , and Crime and Punishment.   Then, standing at the center of the platform, the marble creates a kaleidoscope of reflections.  At the entrance, there is a large, inlay portrait of the author.

Chkalovskaya Station

Chkalovskaya does space Art Deco style (yet again).  Chrome borders all.  Passageways with curvy overhangs create the illusion of walking through the belly of a chic, new-age spacecraft.  There are two (kos)mosaics, one at each end, with planetary subjects.  Transferring here brings you above ground, where some rather elaborate metalwork is on display.  By name similarity only, I’d expected Komsolskaya Station to deliver some kosmonaut décor; instead, it was Chkalovskaya that took us up to the space station.

Elektrozavodskaya Station

vintage looking travel trailers

Elektrozavodskaya is full of marble reliefs of workers, men and women, laboring through the different stages of industry.  The superhuman figures are round with muscles, Hollywood fit, and seemingly undeterred by each Herculean task they respectively perform.  The station is chocked with brass, from hammer and sickle light fixtures to beautiful, angular framework up the innards of the columns.  The station’s art pieces are less clever or extravagant than others, but identifying the different stages of industry is entertaining.

Baumanskaya Statio

Baumanskaya Station is the only stop that wasn’t suggested by the students.  Pulling in, the network of statues was just too enticing: Out of half-circle depressions in the platform’s columns, the USSR’s proud and powerful labor force again flaunts its success.  Pilots, blacksmiths, politicians, and artists have all congregated, posing amongst more Art Deco framing.  At the far end, a massive Soviet flag dons the face of Lenin and banners for ’05, ’17, and ‘45.  Standing in front of the flag, you can play with the echoing roof.

Ploshchad Revolutsii Station

Novokuznetskaya Station

Novokuznetskaya Station finishes off this tour, more or less, where it started: beautiful mosaics.  This station recalls the skyward-facing pieces from Mayakovskaya (Station #2), only with a little larger pictures in a more cramped, very trafficked area.  Due to a line of street lamps in the center of the platform, it has the atmosphere of a bustling market.  The more inventive sky scenes include a man on a ladder, women picking fruit, and a tank-dozer being craned in.  The station’s also has a handsome black-and-white stone mural.

Here is a map and a brief description of our route:

Start at (1)Kievskaya on the “ring line” (look for the squares at the bottom of the platform signs to help you navigate—the ring line is #5, brown line) and go north to Belorusskaya, make a quick switch to the Dark Green/#2 line, and go south one stop to (2)Mayakovskaya.  Backtrack to the ring line—Brown/#5—and continue north, getting off at (3)Novosblodskaya and (4)Komsolskaya.  At Komsolskaya Station, transfer to the Red/#1 line, go south for two stops to Chistye Prudy, and get on the Light Green/#10 line going north.  Take a look at (5)Dostoevskaya Station on the northern segment of Light Green/#10 line then change directions and head south to (6)Chkalovskaya, which offers a transfer to the Dark Blue/#3 line, going west, away from the city center.  Have a look (7)Elektroskaya Station before backtracking into the center of Moscow, stopping off at (8)Baumskaya, getting off the Dark Blue/#3 line at (9)Ploschad Revolyutsii.  Change to the Dark Green/#2 line and go south one stop to see (10)Novokuznetskaya Station.
