The Cleanest Cruise Lines, According to CDC Inspections
While keeping passengers healthy has always been a priority for cruise lines, never has the issue been important than today.
Following the health crisis and the suspension of sailing, you should know that cruise lines are serious about cleanliness. Any sort of incident — whether a virus or not — would lead to a flurry of headlines and negative press, potentially turning some passengers away and hurting business.
Meanwhile, the government also has an interest in keeping cruise passengers healthy. That’s why they have oversight in inspecting ship cleanliness.
Vessel Sanitation Program: Health Inspections for Cruise Ships
Many people don’t realize it, but the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) operates the Vessel Sanitation Program (VSP).
This program is essentially a health inspection for cruise ships. Just like a restaurant in your town would be checked by a health inspector, ships sailing from the United States are also checked out on a regular basis. These inspections are done without prior knowledge by the cruise line.
In particular, the CDC inspections focus on eight areas:
- Medical facilities
- Water systems
- Swimming pools and whirlpools
- Galleys and dining rooms
- Child activity centers
- Hotel accommodations
- Ventilation systems
- Common areas
Cruise ships overall do well on these inspections. Scores are on a 100-point scale and tallies in the high-90s and above are common. In fact, since the start of 2022, more than 20 ships have scored perfect a perfect 100 grade.
On the other end, anything less than 86 is considered unsatisfactory . If a ship scores below this mark, they have the chance to correct the issues and be re-inspected.
Scoring below an 86 only happens on occasion across dozens and dozens ships. Since the start of 2022 until today, we found only one ship with a failing grade.
The good news for cruise passengers is not only do ships score well when inspected, but the results are also published publicly. You can visit the CDC website and see the scores and reports for hundreds of vessels. Each report is also complete with a write-up of any issues found. No doubt any cruise ship you are sailing on will have their latest report listed.
Now, while ships tend to score well, there are some lines that seem to do better than others on a consistent basis.
Given the current environment, we know that cleanliness is important to passengers. With this in mind, we recently combed through the latest inspection scores from the CDC to determine which cruise line is the cleanest on average by the standards of the Vessel Sanitation Program.
The Average Score of Every Cruise Line
As mentioned above, the CDC lists the inspections scores for an enormous number of vessels sailing from the United States. These scores go back years. For our research, we focused only on scores from the start of 2022 through today to provide more recent information.
In addition, we looked only at those lines with at least two ships receiving scores during that time. This removes small specialty lines that might only occasionally sail from the U.S.
Using the VSP data, we looked at the most recent scores for each ship listed. From there, we averaged the scores across the entire fleet of each line — giving us a single score for each cruise line.
In total, no cruise line scored a perfect average, but every line had a score of at least 91 . The scores ranged from a low of 91.6 to a near-perfect 99.8.
You can see the results in the chart below:
As you can see, in general cruise lines score well on their inspections. That said, some do score higher marks than others.
The 3 “Cleanest” Cruise Lines According to the CDC
According to the CDC data, here are the three cruise lines that scored the highest average scores on their latest inspection reports:
Disney Cruise Line – When it comes to high scores on CDC inspections, Disney takes the top honor. With five ships, every Disney cruise ship scored well on their latest inspections. Four of the ships — Disney Fantasy, Magic, Wish, and Wonder — scored a perfect 100. Disney Dream scored the only non-perfect score… a “lowly” 99. Taken together, the five scores come out to a near-perfect 99.8 average inspection score, making Disney the cleanest cruise line based on inspection scores.
Silversea- While Disney took top honors, Silversea wasn’t far behind. The average score on this luxury cruise line was a 98.5. One thing to note is that the CDC only inspects ships sailing from the United States. If a ship doesn’t come to the U.S. often, it could be longer before another inspection. As a result, despite a 13-ship fleet, only two ships were recently inspected by the CDC. Still, they had solid inspection scores, including a perfect 100 for the Silver Moon and a 97 for Silver Dawn.
Celebrity – Celebrity makes a strong showing as a luxury brand that sails larger vessels than Silversea and has a much larger fleet than Disney. The cruise line came in with an average score of 98.1 across its inspections, which includes eight different ships with recent inspection scores. Celebrity Edge, Millennium and Summit all scored a 100 in their last inspections, while two others — Celebrity Beyond and Equinox — scored a near-perfect 98. The lowest score in the fleet was a still-strong 95 aboard Celebrity Reflection.
These Ships Scored Lowest at Last Inspection
Overall, the average scores of cruise lines were strong, with no line averaging below an 91. That said, there were a few lower scores on the inspection reports for individual ships in our search:
MSC Seaside: 67 (Not Satisfactory) — This ship had the lowest score listed during our search and was the only one to score below 86 (indicating “not satisfactory” according to the CDC) since 2022. That’s surprising because all other MSC ships checked by the CDC scored at least 95, with MSC Seascape scoring a perfect 100.
According to the inspection report , violations included various issues ranging from incorrect data logs on crew counts, issues with dishwashing operations, and one crew member with hamburger blood on their hands opening a cooler door, leaving the “refrigerator door handle covered in hamburger blood.”
Carnival Liberty: 86 (Satisfactory) — An 86 is a satisfactory mark according to the CDC, but it is still lower than most among the scores we analyzed. The CDC took issue with dishwashers being out of service, leaky faucets, as well as employees not reporting gastro illness soon enough after onset of symptoms.
Carnival Pride : 86 (Satisfactory) — During an inspection of Carnival Pride , the CDC inspectors found some food areas on the ship “infested with flies that were too many to count.” This went along with “old food soil” in multiple areas.
Despite the lower scores on Liberty and Pride, Carnival overall posted high marks. The average score was 96.1, with four ships — Celebration, Magic, Panorama, and Sunshine — earning perfect scores.
How to See What Your Cruise Ship Scored
Headed on a cruise soon and want to know what your specific ship scored on its latest inspection? You can search the VSP database by ship using this page . Simply find your ship in the list and then click search. It will also allow you to see reports, which you can read to see the specific violations found on the ship.

How You Can Stay Healthy While at Sea
Cruise ships have adapted to a post-pandemic world.
Fran Golden,
In the wake of the pandemic, cruise ships have upgraded their health and safety systems, from hand sanitizers throughout the ship to medical-grade air filters in the ventilation systems to robots that shoot ultraviolet rays to kill bacteria.
You’ll no longer need to show proof of COVID-19 vaccination to board many ships, though unvaccinated travelers are encouraged to provide a negative COVID test result. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which shut down cruising in North America from March 2020 to June 2021, ended its intense monitoring of the industry in July 2022, saying cruise passengers “can make their own risk assessment when choosing to cruise, much like they do in other settings.”

Here’s what to expect:
- Cruise ship medical centers have been upgraded with equipment to test for COVID-19, and medical teams have added personnel to better treat anyone who falls ill, even severely ill.
- When a passenger tests positive, contact tracing commences. On some ships, security cameras will use facial recognition to aid in this task; on the big ships with thousands of passengers, you may be traced via an app on your smartphone or a smart wristband provided at check-in.
- Passengers who get sick will be confined to their cabins or cabins set aside for quarantine purposes. Meals will be delivered to those rooms.
- Wearing a mask is a personal choice.
Where does all this leave older travelers considering getting on a ship? Thomas Russo, M.D., professor and chief of infectious diseases at the University at Buffalo’s Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, says passengers should realize they are going into an “increased risk situation,” with the social atmosphere comparable to attending a wedding every night.
“You just have to assume you are going to be interacting with people who are infectious,” he says. “I can't recommend strongly enough that you should be vaccinated and updated with all your boosters to maximize protection.”
Russo adds that packing the antiviral Paxlovid , which needs to be taken within the first few days of becoming ill, is also a good practice.

This Fitness-focused Cruise Ship Will Have a Whole Deck Just for Sports and Exercise
Cruising isn’t exactly associated with weight loss — in fact, quite the opposite. Most people can reasonably expect to return home from a week’s all-inclusive voyage at least a few pounds heavier. With 24-hour buffets, five-course dinners, and those secret afternoon teas that pop up…well, it’s no surprise why.
But fear not — a brand new alternative is floating on the horizon.
Blue World Voyages , soon to be launching this summer, will be the first cruise line dedicated to active, athletic, healthy lifestyles: a new niche they’re calling “Active Lifestyle Cruising.”
Their inaugural vessel (name soon to be decided) will drift away from the traditional feel of cruise ships. The 350-passenger luxury ship will still maintain a casual vibe — guests can feel comfortable in street clothes, exercise gear, or even a bathrobe. And instead of Gelato pop-ups and soda stations, you’ll find sports, exercise classes, and wellness areas filled with the latest fitness technology.
A Sports Deck will stretch from bow to stern, home to a training center, golf and football simulators, TRX studios, and batting cages. Guests can make a splash in one of two onboard pools, or venture further afield in the innovative Sea-Water Lap Pool: a pool deck will be lowered directly onto the ocean, making a perfect setting for open water training.
If a more mentally detoxing experience sounds appealing, head to the Spa and Rejuvenation Deck where you can take a dip in the hydrotherapy tub, relax in the solarium, or treat yourself to a deep tissue massage in one of the indoor and outdoor treatment rooms.
In keeping with the wellness focus, dining options will include four restaurants serving locally sourced and sea-to-table cuisine. When in port, chefs will venture ashore to collect the finest local ingredients for their on-board kitchens.
The launch of this “ultimate cruise experience for wellness-minded adults” could not have arisen at a better time, as the global wellness industry today stands at a colossal net worth of $4.2 trillion; along with a 6.5% year-on-year growth for travelers seeking wellness holidays .
Gene Meehan, the company’s chairman and founder, had this to say in a statement: “Blue World Voyages was created for health-conscious individuals, sports and fitness enthusiasts, and those in search of personal improvement. Our focus on Active Lifestyle Cruising is not an option or an add-on. It forms the core of our overall cruise travel experience, deeply embedded into every aspect of the company, from ship design and onboard programmes [sic] to dining options and itineraries.”
Ports of call have been carefully selected on the basis of locally available fitness-focussed activities such as hiking, golfing, water sports, cycling, and mental awareness activities like yoga and meditation.
The inaugural sailing will be a seven-day Mediterranean itinerary, stopping in Portugal, France, Corsica, Greece, Spain, Croatia, and Italy. Being a small ship, the new Blue World Voyages vessel will be able to access those secluded areas — coral reefs, hidden waterfalls — that larger, amusement-park-style ships can’t access.
Blue World Voyages also aims to disrupt the cruise industry in a different capacity: offering guests the opportunity to become business partners of the cruise line. By purchasing one of twenty luxury onboard residences, one can become a member of the “Owners Club” — using their rooms when they please, renting them out through Blue World’s agency when unoccupied (standard passengers will pay $3,500 for the week). This concept of residential living on a cruise ship was dreamt up by Blue World co-founder Fredy Dellis, who previously oversaw MS The World — a first-of-its-kind residential ship housing 165 privately owned luxury apartments.
The 11 Best Cruise Lines for Adults
By Janice Wald Henderson
The world's best cruise lines for adults have one major perk in common: the child-free utopia passengers are afforded while sailing. Daydreaming on deck , leisurely romantic dinners, dancing into the wee hours, popping champagne, and even getting tatted—such unabashed joys have everything to do with being grownup and nothing to do with kids.
The best adult cruises allow passengers to pursue relaxation, rejuvenation, and indulgence, undisturbed by tantrum-minded toddlers and other children potentially ruining your me-time groove. For when it's time to sail away from the stresses of life on land, we've pulled together the very best cruise lines for adults, plus their most exciting itineraries available for booking in 2024 and early 2025.
Note that while some of these lines are strictly adults-only, others are adults-oriented, meaning that they may have some well-behaved older children on board during school holidays but otherwise, rarely do. Most are small ship experiences with geared-to-grownup itineraries spanning the globe and leaning into all-inclusiveness and luxury—all the better to admire when it’s all about you.
All listings featured on Condé Nast Traveler are independently selected by our editors. If you purchase something through our links, we may earn an affiliate commission.
Formerly Crystal Cruises, the adults-driven luxury line was purchased by Abercrombie & Kent Travel Group, then dramatically remodeled and reborn as Crystal. Its legions of fiercely loyal fans are largely back, as are many familiar crew who pamper passengers incessantly. Its two gorgeous ships, 740-passenger Crystal Serenity and 606-passenger Crystal Symphony , fairly ooze sophistication and style. Crystal renewed its partnership with Nobu Matsuhisa; the line's award-winning onboard restaurant Umi Uma presents the globally renowned chef’s only plates at-sea. These ships voyage most of the world, with inclusions like nearly all dining, alcohol, 24-hour room service, gratuities, butler service, and WiFi.
The sailing to take this year: Crystal Serenity offers a 12-day Cape Town to Tema, Ghana , visiting Namibia , Angola, and São Tomé, a dual-island nation dubbed Africa’s Galápagos. Incredible outings include climbing Walvis Bay’s colossal sand dunes and exploring São Tomé’s pristine forests with nearly 200 endemic species. Departs May 5, 2024, from $6,900 per person .
This adults-oriented luxury French line of small sleek ships include its six newest 184-passenger “Ponant Explorer” vessels, four 264-passenger expedition sister ships, and 32-passenger yacht Le Ponant . Count on some 44 such itineraries including onboard talks given by world-class experts, one excursion in each port, and other fare-included perks such as dining, alcohol, WiFi, and gratuities. So many Smithsonian Journeys compel, such as a nine-day Celtic Voyage, eight-day Cultural and Natural Treasures of Japan by Sea, and a nine-day Circumnavigation of Sicily.
The sailing to take this year: Hats-off to Le Champlain’s immersive Sicily voyage sailing roundtrip Valletta, Malta . Besides noted ports, this sail includes visits to Ggantija Temples, a UNESCO World Heritage Site on the Maltese isle of Gozo; and another UNESCO stunner, Lipari in the Aeolian Islands. The line's 2025 departures add Tunis as a further temptation. Departs April 14, 2024, June 2, 2025, and August 29, 2025, from $8,580 per person .
Seabourn, an ultra-luxury adults-oriented line, recently introduced twin polar-class expedition ships, 264-passenger Seabourn Pursuit and Seabourn Venture, with exploration toys like submarines and a 24-expert team to guide and engage passengers. Luxe elements include all-suite accommodations, complimentary caviar, and eight dining venues. Seabourn’s five all-suite ocean liners include the two newest and most glam 600-passenger sister ships, Seabourn Ovation and Seabourn Encore . Seabourn fares include all the restaurants on board (including the new Mediterranean venue Solis on non-expedition ships), alcohol, 24-hour suite dining, dancing on deck, and caviar in the surf beach barbecues.
The sailing to take this year: Seabourn ships roam the globe, with knockout itineraries like a 12-day “Canary Island Jewels and Morocco” on Seabourn Ovation , sailing roundtrip Lisbon . Imagine sipping local wine in the westernmost Canaries, wandering lively souks in Tangier, and learning to cook delicious Moroccan specialties. Departs April 26, from $6,204 per person .

Ultra-luxurious and opulent, this adults-oriented six-ship line is inclusive to the max: think business-class airline tickets for international flights, fine dining, all-suite accommodations, 24-hour suite service, alcohol, dining, valet laundry, gratuities, transfers, and some shore excursions. Multi-million-dollar art collections on the three newest ships stun. On brand-new 744-passenger Seven Seas Grandeur , revel in 1,600 masterpieces including multiple Picassos and a Fabergé egg, the first to reside at-sea. The entire ship’s design is jaw-droppingly beautiful and restaurants, like pan-Asian Pacific Rim and the French Chartreuse, excel.
The sailing to take this year: This ship sails many locales, like an enchanting 12-day fall foliage cruise from Boston to Montréal , with complimentary excursions like visiting Kennebunkport, Maine , a Nova Scotia pub tour, and high tea at the iconic Château Frontenac in Quebec City . Besides the Caribbean and Mediterranean, Windstar ships also ply far-flung waters, from transatlantic crossings to cruises in South America and Iceland . Star Breeze now sails Tahiti voyages, cruising the unforgettable turquoise waters of French Polynesia year-round.

The extensively remodeled luxury ships feel like exclusive yachts, with crew quickly learning your personal preferences. Elegant staterooms and suites offer amenities like organic bath toiletries, plush robes, and 24-hour room service. The sailing to take this year: The mega-yachts primarily cruise the Med and Caribbean, with standouts like Sea Dream I ’s seven-day “Secluded Southern Spain and Morocco” itinerary from Lisbon to Málaga . Excursions include a Seville, Spain , overnight with flamenco performance, visit to an Algarve, Portugal , fishing village with wine-tasting and exploring historical Cordoba, Spain . Each possesses its own vibrant personality, reflecting the waters it sails. Count handcrafted Savoir Beds of England, marble baths with Asprey toiletries, and towel warmers among posh amenities. Alcohol, farm-to-table dining, airport transfers, excursions, gratuities, and wellness classes are included, and often-local entertainment. These posh boats sail throughout Europe and Asia , as well as Peru , with some offering land or rail extensions.
The sailing to take this year: Beloved by oenophiles, S.S. Bon Voyage’s Brilliant Bordeaux sails eight days roundtrip Bordeaux, France on three rivers, promising multiple wine tastings, and village and heritage walking tours. Departing March 31, 2024 to October 27, 2024 from $3,599 per person .

Cruise Ship Travel
CDC Respiratory Virus Guidance has been updated. The content of this page will be updated soon.
While cruising is a popular way to travel, there are some health concerns to be aware of. Find out more about health issues on cruises and steps you can take to stay safe and healthy during your trip.
If you are feeling sick before your voyage, do not travel and ask your cruise line about rescheduling or reimbursement options. If you feel sick during your voyage, report your symptoms to the ship’s medical center and follow their recommendations.
Common Health Concerns During Cruise Travel and what You Can Do to Prevent Illness
- Respiratory illnesses like influenza , COVID-19 , and the common cold. Get your annual flu shot and get up to date on your COVID-19 vaccines . Check directly with your cruise line about their COVID-19 testing or vaccination protocols before travel. If you have a weakened immune system , talk with your healthcare provider about your cruise travel plans. Wash your hands frequently or use hand sanitizer . When you cough or sneeze, cover your nose and mouth with a tissue to prevent spreading germs. Consider wearing a mask in crowded or poorly ventilated indoor areas.
- Norovirus. Symptoms of vomiting and diarrhea, primarily caused by outbreaks of norovirus, have been reported. To prevent norovirus , wash your hands with soap and water before eating and after using the bathroom, changing diapers, or touching things that other people have touched, such as stair railings. Avoid touching your face. For more information, visit CDC’s Vessel Sanitation Program website.
- Seasickness. Cruise ship passengers may experience seasickness or motion sickness. If you know you get seasick or think you may be likely to get seasick, talk to your healthcare provider about medicine to reduce your symptoms. Some common medications, including some antidepressants, painkillers, and birth control pills, can make seasickness worse.
- Sunburns. Apply sunscreen with SPF 15 or higher when traveling. Protecting yourself from the sun isn’t just for tropical beaches—you can get a sunburn even if it’s cloudy or cold.
- Bug bites. On your trip, use insect repellent and take other steps to avoid bug bites. Bugs, including mosquitoes and ticks, can spread diseases such as malaria, yellow fever, Zika, dengue, chikungunya, and Lyme. Many ships visit ports where these diseases are a concern.
Before Your Trip
Check CDC’s destination pages for travel health information . Check CDC’s webpage for your destination to see what vaccines or medicines you may need and what diseases or health risks are a concern at your destination.
Make sure you are up to date with all of your routine vaccines . Routine vaccinations protect you from infectious diseases that can spread quickly in groups of people. Outbreaks of chickenpox, influenza, and COVID-19 have been reported on cruise ships.
Many diseases prevented by routine vaccination are not common in the United States but are still common in other countries. Crew members and fellow travelers often board a cruise ship from destinations where some diseases are more common than in the United States or where vaccination is not routine.
Make an appointment with your healthcare provider or a travel health specialist that takes place at least one month before you leave. They can help you get destination-specific vaccines, medicines, and information. Discussing your health concerns, itinerary, and planned activities with your provider allows them to give more specific advice and recommendations.
Plan for the Unexpected
Prepare for any unexpected issues during your cruise ship travels with the following steps:
Prepare a travel health kit with items you may need, especially those items that may be difficult to find at your destination. Include your prescriptions and over-the-counter medicines in your travel health kit and take enough to last your entire trip, plus extra in case of travel delays. Depending on your destination you may also want to pack a mask , insect repellent , sunscreen (SPF15 or higher), aloe, alcohol-based hand sanitizer, water disinfection tablets, and your health insurance card.
Get travel insurance. Find out if your health insurance covers medical care abroad. Travelers are usually responsible for paying hospital and other medical expenses out of pocket at most destinations. Make sure you have a plan to get care overseas , in case you need it. Consider buying additional insurance that covers health care and emergency evacuation, especially if you will be traveling to remote areas.
If you need medical care abroad, see Getting Health Care During Travel .
After Travel
If you traveled and feel sick, particularly if you have a fever, talk to a healthcare provider and tell them about your travel. Avoid contact with other people while you are sick.

I've been on 50 cruises. Here are 3 routes I'd sail again in a heartbeat and 3 I'd probably skip.
- I've been on 50 cruises (at least six a year), and some routes are better than others.
- I try to avoid cruises that make stops at Nassau and Freeport in the Bahamas.
- My favorite cruise I've ever been on was a Mediterranean voyage from Barcelona.
I've taken 50 cruises with family and friends, and I'm always looking to try out new routes with different port stops .
Before I ever book a cruise — which I do about six times a year — I try to find either a new-to-me ship or a new-to-me route. If neither of those options works for my budget or timeframe, I opt for a familiar favorite.
Here are my favorite cruise routes that I'm always happy to book, and the ones I don't need to sail again.
My favorite route is a Mediterranean cruise that starts and ends in Barcelona, Spain.
Mediterranean cruises start and end in various ports of call around Europe, typically throughout the summer sailing season.
Last year, my family and I took a Disney Cruise that started and ended in Barcelona, with stops in France and Italy.
My favorite part of this trip was splitting a day between Nice and Eze in the French Riviera . I was able to walk through cobblestone streets overlooking the ocean while sipping on limoncello.
I love Caribbean cruises along the western ports.
I've taken many western Caribbean routes over the years on Carnival Cruise Line and Disney Cruise Line, and they never disappoint.
The route usually includes stops at Cozumel, Mexico, and Georgetown, Grand Cayman. But it may also include ports of call at Falmouth, Jamaica; Costa Maya, Mexico; or Roatán, Honduras.
I always get off the ship in Cozumel, even if it's just to have lunch at a taco shop. Don't get lured into the restaurants right at the docks because the best food is in the spots farther down the main street.
I also love getting off in Roatán. On a recent cruise, I took an excursion to Roatan Island Brewing Company to try different beers made with local ingredients.
I also enjoy routes that only stop at private islands.
Every once in a while, I can find a short three-night cruise on Royal Caribbean or Disney that only visits the brand's private islands.
These short cruises are ideal weekend getaways and go to some of my favorite ports of call, like Royal Caribbean's CocoCay and Disney's Castaway Cay.
I love both of these destinations because there's so much to do — you really can spend the entire day at the beach or exploring the various parts of the island. I also love that food and drinks are all provided, so I don't have to return to the ship for lunch.
On the other hand, I don't need to go to Nassau and Freeport in the Bahamas again.
I love short cruises from Port Canaveral or Fort Lauderdale, Florida, but they often mean stopping at Nassau and Freeport in the Bahamas .
I don't really think there's much to see at either stop once you've done it once or twice. If my route includes them, I usually stay on the ship to enjoy the less crowded pool and spa.
The trade-off for these two ports is often getting to visit a cruise line's private island , so I think it's worth it for that. But I don't need to go on another long cruise through the Bahamas.
I'm also not a big fan of Bimini, Bahamas.
Many cruise lines, like Carnival and Virgin Voyages , are now taking cruisers to Bimini for an easy beach day. But if you're not a big fan of chilling at the beach, there's not much else to do on the island.
I’d probably skip cruising to Key West.
I love Key West in the Florida Keys , but as a port stop, it was hard to see a lot of the island and explore beyond Duval Street.
I'd prefer to spend a few days in the destination to explore all that it has to offer instead of making it a cruise stop.

The best Norwegian Cruise Line ship for every type of traveler
W hat's the best Norwegian Cruise Line ship? Over the years, I've sailed on all but three of Norwegian's 19 vessels, and my personal favorite is Norwegian Prima. I love its stylish design and upscale feel, as well as its wide mix of eateries, bars and entertainment.
Still, Norwegian Prima isn't necessarily the best Norwegian Cruise Line ship for you. Whether you'll have a better time on one of the other 18 vessels in the Norwegian fleet will depend a lot on the type of traveler you are.
Norwegian has some vessels, such as Norwegian Encore, that are loaded with family-friendly attractions such as waterparks and go-kart tracks that are perfect for families with teens and tweens. To me, Norwegian Encore is an even better choice than Norwegian Prima for families with school-age kids.
For more cruise guides, news and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .
Other Norwegian cruise ships, such as Norwegian Epic and Norwegian Sun, have specific features that might make them better options for solo travelers or retirees. Certain Norwegian ships are best for budget travelers, while others are best for luxury travelers.
In short, the best Norwegian cruise ship for you will depend on a bunch of factors, and which ship is best for a trip with your family might not be your top pick for a couple's cruise or girlfriends' getaway.
Here we list our top picks for the best Norwegian cruise ships for five different types of travelers.
Norwegian Encore: Best for families
The best Norwegian Cruise Line ships for families, hands down, are the four giant, activity-packed ships of its Breakaway-Plus class: Norwegian Encore , Norwegian Bliss, Norwegian Joy and Norwegian Escape. Of these, Norwegian Encore — the biggest of them all — is our top pick.
At 169,116 tons and carrying 3,958 passengers, Norwegian Encore is the largest ship in the Norwegian fleet. That means it has the most space for the many over-the-top family fun zones that are at the core of the four Breakaway-Plus vessels — a series of ships that was specifically designed with families in mind.
For starters, Norwegian Encore is home to some of the most thrilling waterslides at sea, as well as a kiddie splash zone that will have your little ones squealing with delight. But those are just the appetizers when it comes to family fun on the top deck of the ship.
Norwegian Encore is also the setting for one of the biggest go-kart racing tracks at sea . (Yes, this is a thing — Norwegian debuted the concept on its Breakaway-Plus-class ships and now has a go-kart track on five vessels.) Two decks high and nearly 1,150 feet long, the Norwegian Encore Speedway includes four sections that extend up to 13 feet over the sides of the vessel. The racecourse also features a middle-of-the-track observation area where your family and friends can cheer you on to victory — and even shoot you with "lasers" that'll give you a boost of power.

In addition, Norwegian Encore has a large laser tag area on its top deck (one that I can tell you from personal experience is a blast) and a massive indoor gaming and virtual reality zone called the Galaxy Pavilion. Both are tween and teen favorites.
That's all on top of dedicated children's play areas, pools and family-friendly entertainment that will keep your family busy from morning to night.
In short, there are so many family-friendly things to do on Norwegian Encore that you and your kids likely won't be able to do it all in a single, weeklong cruise.
Norwegian Prima and Norwegian Viva: Best for luxury lovers
Luxury lovers have two new top choices in the Norwegian fleet: Norwegian Prima and Norwegian Viva .
Unveiled in 2022 and 2023, respectively, the 3,195-passenger vessels are the first entrants in a new class of Norwegian ships that the line has designed to be more upscale than its earlier vessels. An "elevation" of the brand is how executives describe it.
The upscale turn included loading Norwegian Prima and Norwegian Viva with the largest variety of suites and high-end cabins (13 categories in all) of any ships in the NCL fleet, including the largest three-bedroom suites of any new cruise vessel. If it's swanky digs you're after (and you have the money to spend), you'll find plenty of options on these ships.
Extra suite categories are just the start of what makes Norwegian Prima and Norwegian Viva the best Norwegian cruise ships for luxury lovers.
Notably, the entire back of each of these ships is dedicated to an upscale luxury zone for the fancy set called The Haven. Rising eight decks high, it's home to 107 of the aforementioned suites, a sprawling private indoor lounge area, private outdoor lounge and pool areas, and a private restaurant — all exclusively for the use of the deep-pocketed biggies who pay up for one of its suites.
Related: The 8 best cruise lines for elegance and exclusivity
We've seen these private The Haven suite areas on Norwegian ships before but never on this scale. If it's living large on a Norwegian ship that's your goal, you're not going to find anything better than this.
Outside of The Haven, other areas on these ships have a more elegant feel of the sort you find in the fleets of Norwegian's higher-end sister brands, Oceania Cruises and Regent Seven Seas Cruises — albeit on a bigger scale.
The entryway to each of these ships, for instance, deposits you at the three-story-high Penrose Atrium, which may be the most beautiful atrium of any big ship at sea. It has a curvy, sculptural feel as if the entire space were an art piece.
It's a look that carries over to a bevy of high-end eateries, including Nama, a new-for-Norwegian sushi restaurant with a design that is as sophisticated as the sushi it serves. Also striking is the look of a version of Le Bistro, Norwegian's signature French eatery, that can be found on both of these vessels. Both of the spaces are built around three massive crystal chandeliers costing nearly $100,000 that hang down to the floor — a showstopper of a design element. Gold-leaf wallpaper lines its booth seating.
Notably, the public areas that include these restaurants feel more spacious than many of the other ships in the Norwegian fleet. Indeed, they are. Norwegian Prima and Norwegian Viva were built with a higher ratio of space to passengers than earlier Norwegian vessels, which itself is an upscale touch. The ships also have a higher crew-to-passenger ratio than many Norwegian ships, leading to better service.
In short, these are the Norwegian ships to book when you want to take things up a notch.
Norwegian Sky: Best for budget travelers
Norwegian Sky is the Norwegian ship to pick when you're looking for a low-cost, easy-to-do getaway — at least in the summer months.
Based in Miami for part of the year, the 24-year-old vessel operates a mix of short three- to five-night voyages to the Bahamas out of the cruise hub as well as longer trips to the Caribbean from spring to fall that have one thing in common: They're unusually affordable on a per-night basis.
In many cases, Norwegian Sky sailings out of Miami will start under $100 a day per person, though it depends on the week and pricing for sailings can vary significantly. We sometimes see the ship's shorter sailings starting as low as $249 per person for the entire cruise.
Indeed, the ship often is at the top of the list when you sort cruises by lowest price on Norwegian's website.
For would-be Norwegian cruisers, Norwegian Sky's shorter sailings out of Miami serve as a sort of "test the line" opportunity. Their short time frame and low pricing mean you're not out a lot in time or money if you don't love it as much as you hoped. These shorter sailings cater heavily to first-time cruisers and Florida locals who can book on short notice and drive into the port for a quick escape.
One of two ships in the line's Sun class that date to the turn of the millennium, Norwegian Sky is far from the snazziest ship in the Norwegian fleet. This is both because of its age but also its size. At 77,104 tons and carrying 1,944 passengers, it's just half the size of Norwegian's biggest ships and has far fewer venues, from bars and restaurants to entertainment spaces. There is no giant water park on its top deck or a go-kart track to keep the kids busy all day, so it's not the best Norwegian Cruise Line ship for families.
Related: The 8 classes of Norwegian Cruise Line ships, explained
That said, Norwegian Sky has its allures, one of which is that it has a much more intimate feel than the line's bigger vessels. It's a great choice for adults on a budget who are satisfied with the basics.
Norwegian Epic: Best for solo travelers
When it comes to the best Norwegian cruise ship for solo travelers, one ship stands out above all the others: Norwegian Epic.
Unveiled in 2010, Norwegian Epic caters to solo travelers like no other large cruise ship at sea — from any line, not just Norwegian — with an unusually large private zone for solo travelers that has its own two-story lounge for solo mixers as well as special solo cabins.
Tucked away in the middle of the ship, this "studio" zone is essentially a private escape for solos, with more solo cabins — 128 — than you'll find on any other ship at sea.
The cabins measure just 100 square feet but are superbly designed to maximize storage space. They're also clustered around the exclusive Studio Lounge, which has its own private bar and a television area where solo travelers can mingle at daily hosted happy hour gatherings.
Only solos staying in the solo cabins (via keycards) can access the Studio Lounge, meaning that you and your new solo friends will have the place to yourselves.
Related: The best cruise lines for solo travelers
Norwegian Epic was the first Norwegian ship with an exclusive solos zone, and it was such a hit the line later added them to eight more vessels. But none of the latter zones are as big as the one on Norwegian Epic.
The bigger Norwegian Encore, Norwegian Escape and Norwegian Bliss all have an 82-cabin solo complex, while two older ships — Norwegian Breakaway and Norwegian Getaway — have solo areas with 59 cabins. The line's two newest vessels, Norwegian Prima and Norwegian VIva, have 72-cabin solo complexes spread over two decks.
Norwegian also offers four solo cabins on its Hawaii-based Pride of America.
Having sailed in one of Norwegian Epic's cabins for one, I can confidently declare them among the coolest solo digs at sea. I particularly love the "Jetsons" futuristic-style design and the multicolored mood lighting.
One big caveat: They're all inside cabins without an ocean view, although most have a window that looks out onto a corridor.
Related: Why a windowless inside cabin isn't so bad
A bigger caveat, perhaps, is that these solo cabins have become so popular they often sell out far in advance and at prices that aren't much better than booking a cabin for two.
Norwegian Sun: Best for retirees
For older travelers looking for a Norwegian ship that isn't filled to the gills with children, Norwegian Sun is the perfect option.
Dating to 2001, Norwegian Sun is one of Norwegian's oldest and smallest vessels, and it lacks many of the family-focused onboard attractions that are typical for the line's newer and bigger vessels. You won't find big waterparks, go-kart racing tracks or laser tag zones on this ship.
Norwegian Sun's top deck mostly comprises sunning areas, with a single pool and whirlpools, as is typical for ships built more than two decades ago.
As a result, it draws far fewer families than most of the vessels mentioned above and caters more to an older crowd of mostly couples.
Norwegian Sun also is the ship that Norwegian deploys on some of its longest and most destination-focused itineraries, the type that particularly appeals to retirees looking to see more of the world.
Related: The 7 best cruises for seniors who love to travel
Over the next two years, for instance, Norwegian Sun is sailing lots of long voyages out of such less-common home ports as Benoa, Indonesia; Melbourne, Australia; Auckland, New Zealand; Buenos Aires, Argentina; and Papeete, Tahiti.
The sailings out of Papeete will offer the chance to visit such iconic French Polynesian islands as Bora Bora, Raiatea and Moorea. ia and Thailand in-depth, with departures ranging from 13 to 18 nights — the sort of cruise that appeals more to older couples than families.
The sailings in and out of Buenos Aires and Melbourne, all on the longer side, will offer in-depth explorations of the southern half of South America (Argentina, Uruguay and Chile) and New Zealand, respectively.
Norwegian Sun is also one of the smallest and least kid-focused of the five ships the line deploys to Alaska in summer, making it a good choice for retirees wanting to visit that destination. Families with kids naturally gravitate to the two giant, activity-packed vessels Norwegian sends to Alaska each summer — Norwegian Encore and Norwegian Bliss.
Related: The 5 best destinations you can visit on a Norwegian ship
At 78,309 tons, Norwegian Sun is less than half the size of the biggest Norwegian ships, and it holds just 1,878 passengers at double occupancy. (Compare that to more than 4,000 for Norwegian's biggest vessels.) Expect a far more intimate experience than what you'll find on most of the ships mentioned above.
Note that due to the ship's small size, some of Norwegian's signature features, including a private The Haven suite complex and solo cabins, aren't found on the ship. Still, you'll find more than half a dozen eateries, including several main dining rooms, a casual buffet, a diner-style pub, a steak house, an Italian trattoria and a French bistro as well as a showroom with nightly shows, a casino, a multipurpose basketball/volleyball court, golf driving nets and a jogging track.
Bottom line
Norwegian Cruise Line's fleet consists of 19 ships that come in a wide range of sizes and feature differing mixes of venues and activities. Some are jampacked with fun zones that make them perfect for families, while others are geared toward couples and retirees. Some ships have attributes that make them stand out for luxury, solo or budget travelers.
If you're considering a Norwegian cruise, it pays to study not just the itineraries that are available from the line but the specific ships that are operating the itineraries. You want to make sure you end up on the best Norwegian Cruise Line ship for you.

On the Oscars red carpet , Hollywood’s best felt like a million bucks — but how much did they fork over to their stylists ?
An anonymous source told Paula Froelich of NewsNation that a star can pay anywhere between $60,000 – $100,000 for a stylist to get them ready for a single event, including the Academy Awards — and that doesn’t even include the cost of gowns or accessories.
The eye-watering amount is more than what some tenured Hollywood stylists have been paid in the past.
“Stylists used to get $10k,000 a day and there were just a few of us,” Wayne Scott Lukas, who has styled Hollywood legends like Tina Turner and Janet Jackson told NewsNation.
“What’s changed is now everyone is a stylist — and undercutting people who actually know clothes and fashion.”
He claimed that the novice stylists “don’t have the relationships at couture houses” like longtime professionals do — even if they’re charging up to 10 times what a stylist made in the past.
Lukas also lamented the occasional “ugly fashion” that is brought to the red carpet due to the “commission” they get from designers that he would never dare take.
“They put celebrity power in their pockets and cut deals everywhere,” he explained.”They get free bags and dresses in exchange for putting their stuff on celebrities (on top of being paid by celebrities).”
He added: “If I took a gift or commission I lost my integrity to my client.”
Instead, he hopes clients learn to be more critical of the stylists they hire to dress them, claiming that newer stylists supposedly don’t work in the interest of clients, only for their own “financial gain.”
“When your creativity is based on transactions… the only winner is the stylist who got the money or the gift,” he added.

Two New Cruise Ships Ace Their First Health Inspections
Two new cruise ships that debuted in the past year aced their first ever health inspections that took place in early 2024.
All cruise ships that sail from, to, or visit a U.S. port are subject to unannounced health inspections that are carried out by the CDC’s Vessel Sanitation Program.
Explora I and Celebrity Ascent, two new cruise ships that made their debut in the past year, both scored a perfect 100 during their first inspections.
Celebrity Ascent debuted in December 2023 when the cruise ship began to offer cruises from Ft. Lauderdale, Florida.
Explora I, the first ship from new luxury cruise line Explora Journeys, debuted this past summer but recently repositioned to Miami. After the ship arrived in the U.S. for the first time, the ship was given an inspection which it aced.
During the inspections, all major areas of ships are inspected including galleys, water systems, swimming pools, dining rooms, kids clubs, hotel accommodations, ventilation systems, and the vessel’s common areas.
Cruise ships are scored on a 100 point scale and need at least an 86 to pass.
Over the past 12 months, 27 total cruise ships have received a 100 score.
All inspection reports can be seen on the CDC’s website under the Vessel Sanitation Program .
New inspection reports are normally posted on their website a few weeks after the surprise inspections take place.

Virgin Voyages
Virgin Voyages may not seem like the most affordable offering at a glance, but it presents cruisers with supreme value. Base fares include all onboard dining, gratuities, Wi-Fi access, group fitness classes and more. Add those benefits to Virgin's ongoing sales, and you're looking at a top-notch experience for less.

Celebrity Cruises
Celebrity Cruises' vessels offer the endless amenities and buffets of its competitors' megaships but maintain the service standard of smaller lines. Rates on Bahamas and Caribbean itineraries run less than $200 per person, and all-inclusive add-on packages are available.
- 4.36 Overall Rating
- 13 Ships in Fleet
Princess Cruises
Princess Cruises targets more adult travelers (especially on longer voyages) than family-oriented lines like Royal Caribbean International, but at similar prices. Along with lodging and select dining, fares cover activities like cooking demonstrations and educational lectures.
- 4.02 Overall Rating
- 15 Ships in Fleet
Royal Caribbean International
With more than 25 cruise ships, Royal Caribbean is one of the largest lines sailing the ocean today. Having the ability to accommodate thousands of guests per ship allows the company to keep rates low. In fact, travelers may find itineraries in popular destinations throughout the Caribbean, Mexico, the Bahamas and the Pacific Coast for around $250 per person.
- 4.17 Overall Rating
- 25 Ships in Fleet
Holland America Line
Cruisers will find this premium cruise line to be a pretty good bargain, with four-day Caribbean sailings often starting at less than $300 per person, and short voyages along the Pacific Coast coming in around $100 per person. But cutting costs doesn't mean skimping on service; Holland America ships offer individualized attention, free room service and all-inclusive package options.

- 11 Ships in Fleet
MSC Cruises
MSC offers sailings from North American ports like Miami, New York City and Orlando, Florida, though the majority of its voyages depart from international locales. But even if you have to fly to a foreign port, you'll save money over a typical land vacation abroad. Mediterranean sailings can start at around $100 per person, and the line offers several deals and money-saving packages.
- 3.79 Overall Rating
- 22 Ships in Fleet
Carnival Cruise Line
Carnival specializes in budget-friendly fun, offering frequent, significant discounts on already low prices. In fact, itineraries for around $200 per person are the norm. Access to most of the ships' activities won't cost a penny, but keep in mind that some extras (like specialty restaurants, beverages and certain attractions) aren't covered in fares.
- 3.90 Overall Rating
Norwegian Cruise Line
With its popular, frequently running Free at Sea program, Norwegian offers travelers discounts on Wi-Fi, excursions, alcohol, airfare and more on top of its already low prices. And, similar to luxury lines, Norwegian ditches steadfast rules like assigned dining times, but costs a fraction of the price.
- 3.97 Overall Rating
- 19 Ships in Fleet
Cunard Line
While you may not expect to find a more opulent line like Cunard on this list, the cruise provider has a surprising number of relatively reasonable fares for upcoming sailings. Travelers can fully enjoy the line's old-world elegance knowing that room service, onboard activities and most dining options are included in the base price.
- 4.07 Overall Rating
Costa Cruises
A member of the Carnival family, Costa Cruises is primarily based in Europe. The fleet offers lower rates than its competitors, particularly for its Mediterranean itineraries (think: fares starting at less than $100 per person). Although it offers family-friendly amenities, Costa's ships are also well-suited to adults, with various entertainment options like theater shows and casinos.

Disclaimers about ship ratings: A ship’s Health Rating is based on vessel inspection scores published by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). If a ship did not receive a CDC score within 22 months prior to the calculation of its Overall Rating, its Health Rating appears as N/A; in such a case, the ship’s Overall Rating is calculated using the average Health Rating of all CDC-rated ships within the cruise line. These 3 lesser-known cruise lines offer amazing voyages on sail-powered ships
There is nothing quite as magical — or romantic — as a cruise on a sailing ship.
To stand on the deck of a vessel topped with dozens of billowing sails, propelled through the waves by the power of the wind alone, is to go back in time to an earlier age of travel, when crossing the world's oceans was as adventurous as it was challenging.
It's an experience that's all about the feeling of the wind in your hair, the lean of the vessel (known as the heel) as it's pushed by the wind and the sway from the waves (which is actually smoother than what you get on a motor ship).

In contrast to what you'll find on so many motor-powered ships, cruising on a masted ship is about the simple thrill of traveling across the sea and not about all the many attractions you'll find on board.
Only a handful of small cruise brands — so small that you might never have heard of them — offer trips on sailing ships. Here, we look at the three biggest players in this niche subset of the cruise industry.
Sea Cloud Cruises
If it's an authentic, old-style sailing experience you want, then Sea Cloud Cruises is the line for you. The Germany-based company operates three large sailing ships where the sails are unfurled by hand, just as they were on sailing ships centuries ago.
On the biggest of these three vessels, the 136-passenger Sea Cloud Spirit , 18 deckhands scurry high into the rigging on sea days to manually untie and prepare the sails, an amazing sight. Unveiled in 2021 , it's a full-rigged, three-masted sailing ship of the sort that hasn't been common on the world's oceans for more than a century.

Sea Cloud Cruises' two other vessels — Sea Cloud 2 and Sea Cloud — are smaller but offer a similar show as the sails are set by hand the old-fashioned way. The former is a 23-year-old, three-masted barque propelled by 23 sails (five fewer than Sea Cloud Spirit); the latter is a 93-year-old, four-masted barque with 30 sails and a storied past.
Now configured to carry 64 paying passengers, Sea Cloud was originally the private yacht of Postum Cereals heiress Marjorie Merriweather Post and her husband, the famed financier E. F. Hutton. At the time, the vessel was the largest private yacht in the world. It later served the U.S. Navy as a weather ship during World War II, after which it became the presidential yacht for the Dominican Republic. It only began sailing as a cruise vessel in the 1980s.
If you have money to spare, you can still book Post's opulent private quarters on Sea Cloud, now its owner's suite. It'll set you back around $5,000 per day per couple. Her husband's slightly smaller quarters are also available to book at a similar rate.
Post, the wealthiest woman in the U.S. during her lifetime, notably also built Mar-a-Lago, the massive estate in Florida that is now the official residence of Donald Trump.
Sea Cloud Cruises is the most all-inclusive and upscale of the three brands listed in this story, with pricing to match. Expect to pay nearly $1,000 per person per day or more for many sailings.
Sea Cloud Cruises' three vessels offer a diverse array of sailings in the Mediterranean, Northern Europe, the Canary Islands and Morocco, the Caribbean or along the west coast of Central America.

Windstar Cruises
Founded in the 1980s, Windstar Cruises got its start as a sailing ship line. While it now operates traditional motor-powered ships, too, voyages on sailing ships are still a big part of its business.
Three of the Seattle-based brand's six vessels — Wind Spirit, Wind Star and Wind Surf — are sailing vessels, and they all offer a similar yacht-like, small-ship experience.
Two of the three vessels (Wind Spirit and Wind Star) are particularly intimate, measuring 5,407 tons and carrying just 148 passengers with every berth full.
Related: The 2 types of Windstar ships, explained
The line's third sailing vessel, Wind Surf, is nearly three times the size at 14,745 tons. It's one of the biggest sailing ships in the world (only a sister vessel that sails for Club Med is bigger). Wind Surf carries 342 people, an enormous number for a sailing ship.
Unlike on the vessels operated by Sea Cloud, the sails on Windstar's sailing ships aren't unfurled by hand in the old-fashioned way but by the push of a button from the bridge. It's a fully automated system that is much more modern, if less dramatic.
Still, the experience of slicing through the waves by the power of the wind alone on Windstar ships is as glorious and romantic as it is on the Sea Cloud ships.
Windstar Cruises is less all-inclusive and pricey than Sea Cloud but still offers a relatively upscale experience. Its dining program is done in partnership with the food-focused James Beard Foundation, which also brings James Beard Award-winning chefs to the ships regularly for food-themed itineraries.
For an extra $89 per person per day, passengers can also make the experience more all-inclusive with included Wi-Fi, unlimited beer, wine and cocktails, and gratuities (three things that aren't included in regular fares).
The line's three vessels typically spend nearly all of their time sailing in the Mediterranean, the Caribbean or along the west coast of Central America.

Star Clippers
Like Sea Cloud and Windstar, Star Clippers operates three sailing vessels that are among the biggest and most elegant sailing vessels in the world.
The belle of the ball at the line is Royal Clipper, a stunning five-masted ship that is billed as the largest square-rigged ship in the world. Its enormous array of 42 sails has a sail area of 56,000 square feet — significantly more than the sails atop any of the Sea Cloud or Windstar vessels. (Only Sea Cloud Spirit comes relatively close with a sail area of 44,100 square feet spread across 28 sails.)
Built to resemble Preussen, a legendary tall ship of the 19th century, the 24-year-old Royal Clipper shares the spotlight at Star Clippers with two smaller sister vessels, Star Flyer and Star Clipper.
Carrying 166 passengers apiece, the smaller vessels were designed to resemble the speedy clipper ships of the 19th century, which were known for their narrow profile and large sail area. Each vessel has a sail area of 36,000 square feet spread across 16 sails, a large amount for the size.
When it comes to the setting of sails, Star Clippers vessels offer a level of old-style authenticity that is in between the ships of Sea Cloud and Windstar. Like on Sea Cloud vessels, the sails are pulled into position by a team of deckhands using hand power and winches to tighten the "sheets," or ropes.
Unlike on Sea Cloud vessels, the deck hands don't climb high into the rigging to untie and prepare the sails for winching. That part is done automatically at the push of a button from the bridge, as it is on Windstar vessels.
In one key difference, though, Star Clippers lets passengers harness up and climb into the crow's nest of its vessels — a thrilling experience. Just be prepared for your knees to go a bit wobbly as you get to the top; it's way up there.
Star Clippers sailings are the most affordable option among the three sailing brands, in part because the onboard experience is less all-inclusive and upscale.
The three Star Clippers vessels mostly operate sailings in the Mediterranean, the Canary Islands, the Caribbean and along the west coast of Central America.
Bottom line
It's still possible to get a taste of what traveling the world's oceans was like in the days before motor power. Three small cruise companies — Sea Cloud Cruises, Windstar Cruises and Star Clippers — offer voyages on large sailing ships that are as majestic as anything that has sailed the seas in centuries past.
