Stream It Or Skip It: ‘Idina Menzel: Which Way to the Stage?’ on Disney+, An Intimate Look at the ‘Frozen’ Performer’s Journey to Madison Square Garden

Adam sandler’s family-filled ‘you are so not invited to my bat mitzvah’ becomes his best-reviewed film on rotten tomatoes, stream it or skip it: ‘you are so not invited to my bat mitzvah’ on netflix, in which sunny sandler outshines her very famous father, the ‘you are so not invited to my bat mitzvah’ queefing scene normalizes girls being gross little weirdos.

Idina Menzel: Which Way to the Stage? is a Disney+ documentary that follows the performer as she embarks on her 2018 tour with Josh Groban, which closes out at Madison Square Garden (her life-long dream). During this journey, Menzel reflects on the highs and lows of her career and gives insight into her personal life, including the struggles she faces while balancing being a performer and a mother. The documentary is a captivating blend of concert videos, talking head testimonies, and archival footage.

IDINA MENZEL: WHICH WAY TO THE STAGE? : STREAM IT OR SKIP IT?

Opening Shot: Idina Menzel sings “Last night I had a dream, I found myself playing at Madison Square Garden,” to the tune of “Over the Moon” from Jonathan Larson’s hit musical Rent while accompanied by her band. She continues to riff new lyrics to the familiar beat while the screen blacks out to reveal a title card, “Idina Menzel”, written in a glittery gold font.

The Gist: It’s 2018 in New York City and Menzel is preparing to go on tour with Josh Groban which will take her to 17 different cities before wrapping at her “dream” venue, the infamous Madison Square Garden. Through it all, she juggles being an attentive mother to her son, Walker, and undergoing IVF treatments in hopes of conceiving a child with her now-husband, Aaron Lohr.

While counting down to the big performance, the documentary jumps between eras, spanning the entirety of Menzel’s career, from her younger years as a wedding and bar mitzvah singer to her 1996 Broadway debut in Rent and her rise to Disney fame through Frozen . Menzel reflects on these monumental moments and how they’ve impacted her life, while also giving viewers a look into her personal life. She journeys into her hometown in Long Island, NY and rummages through her old keepsakes – including a box of her old songwriting, which she playfully roasts.

Despite the documentary being a joyful celebration of her career, Menzel refuses to shy away from the harder moments in her life. She opens up about the isolation she felt after her parents’ divorce, her resentment towards them for not letting her perform professionally as a child, and the resistance she felt from the industry in the early stages of her career. These recollections are intertwined with her touring experience and often set to the backdrop of her live performances, which include original songs and fan-favorite hits from her musical theatre work, including a “No Day But Today” melody from Rent , “Do You Want To Build A Snowman” from Frozen , and “Defying Gravity” from Wicked .

What Movies Will It Remind You Of? The documentary feels like a mature take on Taylor Swift: Miss Americana and Billie Eilish: The World’s A Little Blurry , with a blend of Josh Groban – Bridges Live: Madison Square Garden and Ben Platt Live from Radio City Music Hall , as their music definitely vibes well with Menzel’s.

Memorable Dialogue: Menzel shades the “LA industry” in one scene while preparing to perform in the city. She says, “I guess LA is always an uncomfortable show since, like, LA industry people don’t know how to relax and have a good time.”

Sex and Skin: Nothing here, but at one point, Menzel jokes to the camera that she is looking forward to returning home to her husband so she can “get some”.

Our Take: Menzel’s documentary (which takes its name from her opening line in Rent ) is a worthwhile tribute to her stardom. The movie hones in on the appreciation she has for her craft, and the joys it brings her. Many recent celebrity documentaries have been focused on performers and their desperation to be seen as more than that, however Menzel doesn’t take her occupation for granted, nor does she consider it an insult. In fact, she makes it clear that she’s worked her entire life to get to where she’s at now, especially following her breakthrough role in Rent and the fleetingness of what she thought was her “big break”.

This becomes even more obvious during a heartbreaking moment in the documentary where she was denied entry into her Los Angeles venue because she wasn’t on “the list”. After explaining that she is scheduled to perform, the guard dismisses her as “Josh Groban’s wife” which causes her to break down into tears once backstage. At another point, she thanks John Travolta for messing up her name at the Oscars (“ Adele Dazeem ”) as the coverage afterwards guaranteed that she’d now be a household name.

These scenes not only showcase how humble Menzel is, despite her career achievements and worldwide acclaim, but also emphasizes how important it is for performers to have personal identities beyond being a performer. Throughout the documentary, Menzel drives in that she’s a mother, a wife, and so much more, and she cherishes all of those bits of her life. It’s that confidence and fearlessness that allows her to command the stage in her glittery jumpsuit and intense ‘80s-style shoulder pads, and that wisdom that makes it clear that she has something to say.

(This isn’t to say that the movie – or perhaps Disney – doesn’t have its own agenda. When going into Frozen territory, Disney threw in a heartwarming montage that goes on notably longer than the others.)

Menzel had a tour stop in Pittsburgh which was shortly after the synagogue shooting that left eleven people dead. She acknowledged the tragedy during her “No Day But Today” melody (which features the lyric, “give into love or live in fear”). In a voice-over, she says, “As artists, we’re always a conduit for what’s going on in our lives, and what we’re feeling emotionally, and what’s going on in the world. Our Pittsburgh show was just a few days after the synagogue shooting so I had to acknowledge it,” adding that songs can “take on new meanings” which prove as a testament to the artists’ work.

While introducing the song (adapted from Larson’s Rent ) to the crowd, she explains, “That show was all about tolerance, it was about love. It was about community. If we could use a song tonight while I’m sitting here in this beautiful city, a Jewish girl from Long Island…”

She continues, “I thought about how we light candles in the Jewish community. Choosing light over darkness. Choosing love over bigotry.” This was an extremely powerful moment to showcase in the documentary given the ongoing wave of anti-semitism the Jewish community is facing, some of which has been instigated by Hollywood big-names.

Parting Shot: Bring on the tears! The documentary ends with Menzel surprising a high school class that’s putting on a production of Rent . She takes the time to sit with the teenagers (who are, rightfully, fangirling) to answer any questions they have about the musical and career. This segues into Menzel reflecting on the lessons she’s learned while on tour and a montage of her performing her original song “Life is Good”.

Our Call: STREAM IT. Idina Menzel: Which Way to the Stage? has something for everybody: lifelong fans, casual fans, and people who may only know her from Travolta’s name slip-up. Her story packs a lot of heart and Menzel shares it with a level of intimacy and genuineness that is rare to come across. Also, who knows, maybe you’ll find a new song or two to fall in love with.

Concert review and photos: Josh Groban soars in tour kickoff in Duluth

Josh Groban

When Josh Groban spoke to us last week about preparing for his tour opener, he noted the challenge of finding ways to fill an arena space with energy.

Mission accomplished.

Thursday night, Groban and tour mate Idina Menzel launched their monthlong jaunt from Infinite Energy Arena in Duluth (which prompted a witty aside from Groban about Duluth Trading Company underwear – and yes, he knows they’re based in Minnesota) and a dazzling three hours of vocal prowess was born.

Yes, there were a few misfires, as is expected on the first night of a major outing. Menzel missed her cue to join Groban for a couple of duets – she was in the bathroom, she explained with her trademark tart wit when she dashed out a few minutes later – and the lighting during Menzel’s opening set was a frustrating dark wash of purple and shadows.

But their voices – separately and together – provided a flawless sonic experience.

Groban, shaggy-haired and bespectacled, arrived on stage at 9:30 p.m. backed by a 14-piece orchestra and five-member band and dove into “Bigger Than Us,” from his current album, “Bridges.”

His catalog has expanded to the point of surely leaving out someone’s favorite, but he wisely sandwiched his new opener and another fresh track, “Symphony,” with his 2008 hit, “You Are Loved (Don’t Give Up).”

Though his stage is vast, it appealed with elegant simplicity. A backdrop superimposed close-ups of the singer-songwriter-actor against sheet music and other designs, while color-changing illuminations that looked like lightsabers see-sawed from the ceiling following Groban’s warm take on a gorgeously soaring “Pure Imagination.”

A few songs into the set, Groban popped up on a secondary stage at the back of the arena, showcasing his piano chops in an instrumental that dovetailed into his rendition of Billy Joel’s incisive “She’s Always a Woman.”

Menzel – post bathroom run – joined him on the small stage for a stunning duet of “Falling Slowly” from the movie/musical “Once,” their voices like interlocking puzzle pieces. Groban remained for another Broadway staple, “Bring Him Home,” the potent ballad from “Les Miserables” that benefitted from the chameleonic ability of Groban’s voice.

His band played a sublime percussion interlude as Groban jogged back to the main stage for the flamenco guitar-heavy “Musica Del Corazon,” proving that in any language, he’s a magnificent singer.

Groban has always engaged effortlessly with his audiences, and age hasn’t quelled his tendencies. He spoke about the importance of arts education in schools; explained his and Menzel’s contribution (“Lullaby”) to fellow Broadway star Laura Benanti’s upcoming charity album to benefit organizations helping to reunite and support families separated at the border (“No matter your politics, there are certain things we shouldn’t do to children or families,” Groban said); and dedicated the touching new “River” to “anybody who struggles silently.”

His sensitivity is appreciated and his commitment to spotlighting others’ talents – the Georgia Boy Choir joined him for “You Raise Me Up” and “Bridge Over Troubled Water” – is commendable. Seventeen years into his career, Groban’s buttery voice and winning presence continue to impress.

Idina Menzel traveled her Broadway and movie soundtrack career during her opening set. Photo: Melissa Ruggieri/AJC

Menzel’s opening hourlong set was equally captivating from a musical standpoint – if only, as previously mentioned, she could have been seen a bit better.

Adroitly mixing her Broadway bonafides – “The Wizard and I” (“Wicked”), “Don’t Rain on My Parade” (“Gypsy”) – with her movie credentials ( “Do You Want to Build a Snowman” from “Frozen”) and her underappreciated original solo efforts (“Queen of Swords”), Menzel was a bundle of majestic vocal swoops throughout.

Though some of the audience appeared to be unfamiliar with – or apathetic about – her music and her efforts to promote engagement, Menzel and her band clearly had a blast.

She dropped in a slinky recast of Modern English’s 1982 hit, “I Melt With You,” noting that it used to remind her of her junior high boyfriend, but now “make me think of my husband” and, following a thundering drum introduction, unleashed the still-enjoyable “Let It Go.”

She endeared herself to the “Rent”-heads in the crowd with a funky run through “Over the Moon,” a gut-busting “Take Me or Leave Me” – which featured a vocal battle royale between Menzel and her backup singer – and the warm embrace of “No Day But Today.”

While fans of Menzel’s bottomless vocal power no doubt adored her set-closing “Defying Gravity,” it was actually the penultimate performance – an a capella read of the most tender song from the “Wicked’ canon, “For Good,” that inspired chills.

Menzel, obviously, can belt. But unlike many of her peers, she’s possesses the skill to understand when less is so much more powerful.

Josh Groban, Idina Menzel Announce Fall 2018 Tour Dates

The multi-platform award winning singer/songwriter Josh Groban will hit the road this fall, joined by recording artist and actress Idina Menzel, on his fall 2018 arena tour.

Groban’s Bridges Tour will hit 17 cities across the country, starting in Georgia on October 18 and wrapping up at New York City’s Madison Square Garden in mid-November.

“I can’t wait to get back on the road and play old and new songs for my fans,” Groban said. “It’s the thing I most look forward to. Creating a show each tour that gives everyone there, including me, an experience they want to hold onto.”

Last year, Groban concluded his series of shows on Broadway with Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812 . Currently, he is filming a new Netflix series, entitled The Good Cop , while simultaneously working on his eight studio album, set to release later this year. On the other hand, Menzel, who is best known for starring as the voice of Elsa in Disney’s Frozen , as well as the vocals behind Oscar-winning hit song “Let It Go,” will return to Broadway this year to star in the production of Skintight . Both artists are acclaimed in the theatre and music industry, so it’s no surprise the duo is headed out on a tour together.

“So excited to join my friend, the supremely talented Josh Groban on tour,” Menzel said. “We’ve done some great things together in the past but this will top them all. And most importantly, can’t wait to reunite with friends and fans everywhere!”

Tickets went on sale earlier this month; each ticket purchased online included a copy of Groban’s album, set to drop this fall.

Idina Menzel and Josh Groban

Josh Groban is satisfied that  Josh Groban Bridges From Madison Square Garden , which hits theaters on Feb. 12 for one-night-only, captures his fall 2018 Bridges Tour just as it was getting good.

“The Garden show captured it at a time when I feel like a show really starts to hit its stride, which is at about 15 or 16 in,” Groban, who currently resides in New York, tells Billboard. “We really felt like we were finding our groove as a band. It was also my first arena tour in many years; It’s like getting back on a bike. Feeling my way through that energy again was exciting.

“And on top of that, obviously any time I’ve had an opportunity to play the Garden — this was the fourth time we’ve played there — there’s pressure, obviously, the emotion of wanting to do the venue proud and do the city proud. So we were really on our toes.”

Trending on Billboard

The Nov. 18 concert featured 18 numbers, five from Groban’s latest album Bridges , as well as duets with tour partner Idina Menzel on “Falling Slowly” (live video premiering above) from Once  and “Lullaby,” plus with Jennifer Nettles, who’s Groban’s neighbor in New York and will be on five dates of Groban’s just announced summer leg of the tour. “Having people like Idina and Jennifer was such an honor,” Groban recalls. He and Menzel have worked together before, in fact, singing at benefits for each other’s charity initiatives and performing together in Chess  during 2007 at London’s Royal Albert Hall.

Idina Menzel & Josh Groban Unveil Sweet 'Lullaby' Duet to Benefit Refugee Services: Exclusive

“Every time we’ve had a chance to collaborate I’ve just been so happy to blend voices with her, and also be friends with her,” Groban says. “When we were going out on this tour we knew we need a big talent to come out with us. Idina was on top of our list to reach out to and say, ‘Would you like to come out for 18 shows.’ Luckily she was available, and it worked out great.”

After its theatrical screening via Trafalgar Releasing,  Josh Groban Bridges From Madison Square Garden  is slated for release as an album and home video. An hour-long version will also air during PBS’ pledge drive during March.

Groban — whose TV show with Tony Danza, The Good Cop , was canceled by Netflix after one season (“It was a network show in the wrong arena,” Groban says) — anticipates that the summer swing, which begins June 7 and also includes trumpeter Chris Botti on some dates and a night with the Colorado Symphony Orchestra on Aug. 28 at the Red Rocks Amphitheater, will be the end of the Bridges Tour. “Then I’ll focus on whatever the next thing is,” says Groban, who isn’t sure what that might be yet. “I might focus on a new record, I might do a little film or TV work. It’s been such an incredible year already, and an incredible 2018, I may just take a week off, even.”

Broadway star, actress, singer-songwriter- there’s nothing Idina Menzel (born 30 May 1971) aka Idina Mentzel from New York, US can’t do. As the voice of Elsa in Disney’s animation 2013 “Frozen” and lending vocals to the smash-hit song “Let It Go” became a worldwide phenomenon sending Menzel into the stratosphere.

Born into a Jewish family, when her parents divorced at 15 Idina began performing at bar mitzvah’s and weddings as a singer before enrolling at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts where she studied performing arts.

In 1995, Menzel scored her first professional job as she joined the cast of the Broadway musical “Rent” as Maureen Johnson, a role which earned her a Tony nomination for Best Featured Actress in a Musical. Ending her successful run in 1997, Menzel released her debut solo album “Still I Can’t Be Still” through Hollywood Records in 1998.

Over the next couple of years, Menzel played small roles in theatre productions “Hair”, “The Wild Party” and “The Vagina Monologues” before landing the prolific role of Elphaba in the award winning musical “Wicked” in 2003. It was this role that really showcased Menzel’s incredible talent and powerful mezzo-soprano vocals and in her two year stint, she received the Tony award for Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Musical.

In 2004 Menzel released her second album “Here” before returning back to her role in “Rent” for the film adaptation the following year. Releasing her third album “I Stand” in 2008 allowed Menzel to take time out to support the release as she spent most of the year and 2009 touring the album, playing sold out shows across the country with Josh Groban and saxophonist Ravi Coltrone joining her on stage at The Lincoln Centre in New York City.

During 2010 Menzel embarked on the “Barefoot at the Symphony Tour” which allowed her to perform with symphony orchestras taking the tour nationwide and branching out to England and Australia. Later that year she had the opportunity to perform at the White House for President Obama and his wife singing the songs “Defying Gravity” and “What I Did for Love”.

It was her role as Elsa in the Disney’s chart-topping “Frozen” in 2013 and its enchanting lead single “Let It Go” which captivated audiences across the globe. The track won an Academy Award for Best Original Song at the 2014 Oscar’s where Menzel also performed it live. Later that year she released her fourth album “Holiday Wishes” which peaked at number six in the US Billboard Charts.

With a voice which captured the essence of Disney in modernity and a heart of gold, Menzel continues spreading joy to the masses both through her music and philanthropy work.

Live reviews

What can you say about a jewish New York girl who became an artist. She is a New York girl, born and raised in Queens. She started her career working as a wedding singer and bar mitzvah singer . Her education followed in New York. She went on to be cast in her first show as Maureen in the Broadway show Rent. She followed that by her wickedly performance as Elphaba in Wicked. Currently, she is starring in the Broadway show If/Then. She plays the part of Elizabeth Vaughan. The show spoke of the possibilities that can come from choosing a path to follow. She sang the hit song, "You Learn To Live Without". Personally, I was given the opportunity of hearing her sing in this performance. Her voice filled the Richard Rodgers Theatre. When the spotlight shined on her, I felt like she was personally singing to me. After the show, I waited outside the stage door for her appearance. When she finally exited the door, I screamed with delight. She took the time to sign my playbill.

The songs she has sung are a part of my daily life. I love to sing songs she has performed while in the shower, car, home, and at karaoke night at a local restaurant. Her performance in the television show Glee brought her talents to the public. Her recent performance in the movie, Frozen was heard by so many young girls as well as older girls. She voiced the character Queen Elsa, a character that sang 'Let it Go' - a favorite song of mine and a huge hit! I enjoyed hearing her singing the Star Spangled Banner at the 85th. Annual MLB All- Star Game. On my IPhone, I have listened to her performance at Radio City Music Hall. I hope she will appear in the next installment of the movie Enchanted. Perhaps, she will get to sing in this movie, too! Whatever she does in the future, Idena Menzel will always shine like the spotlight that shone on her in If/ Then.

Whilst her name may not ring any bells for many people, to the musical-loving world she is a Goddess. With leading roles in a number of hit Broadway musicals, Idina Menzel has cemented her place in musical theatre history and rightly so.

Playing Elphaba in Wicked is no simple task and Idina Menzel was the first to fill the shoes of the Wicked Witch of the West when the musical opened on Broadway in 2003. It was her performance in this role that won her the prestigious Tony Award for Best Leading Actress in a Musical.

As a UK fan of Idina Menzel, one lives in hope of an announcement of a UK show. So when it was announced that she would be playing one night at the Royal Albert Hall back in October 2011, I knew that it was an opportunity that I could not miss. The most special moments of the night came when Idina sang those songs that she is most famous for. "Defying Gravity" and "For Good" were simply stunning. Carving a career as a singer/songwriter over the years since leaving Wicked, the original material that Idina performed on the night was just as beautiful.

She truly is musical theatre royalty and I encourage anyone to witness Idina Menzel's talent live to fully appreciate the gift that she has blessed Broadway with over recent years. One can only hope that she will slap on the green paint and reprise the role that made her the powerhouse she is today, the Wicked Witch of the West.

American singer and actress Idina Menzel was a lesser known pop star having spent a large amount of her time in theatre productions. Her albums were not considered to be particularly commercial successful however after the phenomena of Frozen she has become far more well known across the globe as the voice of heroin Elsa and her synonymous female empowerment anthem 'Let It Go'.

There is no doubt about it that Menzel is very much a theatre performer, and she uses a lot of her training when conducting her live show. There is great annunciation and you get the impression that the microphone is of slight redundancy as Idina could clearly captivate the whole room with her powerful vocal unaided. There is real passion when she performs some of her older, heartfelt tracks including 'So Beautiful'. She also performs a selection of covers from some of her favourite artists including Joni Mitchell and Radiohead which go over well with the audience especially as Idina explains her choices between the tracks. The largest singalong is of course for 'Let It Go' as this feel good anthem cannot be sang at anything other than full volume.

Idina Menzel was great to see live! Not only did she do the songs that she's famous for, she also did several classic covers and originals. Her interaction with fans is very good and entertaining. I saw her in Japan where the majority of the people who went to see her didn't understand English, but that didn't stop her from talking and interacting with us. She even came down into the audience and let a few lucky fans sing! One of my favorite moments was when she sang a capella sans mic. I was in the 16th row, so it was a bit easier for me to hear, but even the people who were in the bleachers were able to hear her powerful voice. I laughed, I cried, and I sang along to the songs that I knew. She is an incredible performer and if she ever comes back to Japan, I will definitely be seeing her again!

Amazing. Even with a voice at less than 100% due to laryngitis this woman can sing notes only dogs can hear.

Great exposure for the latest album "idina". Some strong songs and very sad overtones. The Rent songs were so emotional. She made reference to this being her 2nd Manchester visit and how strong she felt the city was. Rightly so.

We wanted the hits and we got them. Dear Prudence mashed up with Do You Want To Build A Snowman was pure genius.

The Let It Go section with the kids could have been vomit inducing but was Idina at her most simple and bare.

Talking of bare. For Good - acappella, no microphone..... just Idina. Chills and very emotional. A fantastic set From an amazing artist

It is so refreshing not only to hear a woman with a phenomenal voice, elegant stage presence but with a personality and big heart to match. Idina is the most humbling performers I have ever seen. Many times a minimum amount of children are invited up on the stage to sing along or to be a part of the show. Idina went above and beyond by extending the invitation to all the children come to the stage and sit next to her to sing "Let it Go", giving every child a chance to be under the spot light. Such an beautiful memory for a child to keep, singing with Elsa!

She's perfect and the greatest singer of all time! And so cute and so funny! And she's perfect! She sang 2 songs from Frozen, 2 songs from Rent, 3 songs from Wicked AND a bunch of her original songs including cake! And she almost sang Smile and I almost lost my shit! SHE'S PERFECT!!!

Amazing performer with phenomenal vocals. She was hilarious and gives you your money's worth! I'll definitely see her again next time she's in my area. Thanks for a great show, Idina!

We’ve got the windy city covered., josh groban builds musical “bridges” for united center, idina menzel defies vocal gravity.

Posted by Kathryn Randall

Josh Groban

During one of Josh Groban’s many warm conversations with the first two floors of the United Center during the “Bridges” Tour, he started rattling off the many activities on his plate since the “Stages” album and surrounding shows went gangbusters. Between acting on Broadway and Netflix, co-hosting the Tony Awards, alongside ongoing singing, writing and recording commitments, it was enough to make anyone exhausted, and the very least, understand if the 37-year-old star himself came across a little weary.

In addition to collaborations with Josh Groban, Idina Menzel opened the show with an hour’s worth of solo material and smashes she originated from “Frozen,” “Wicked,” “Rent” and more.

From there, Groban introduced a community choir for the inspiring “Granted,” kept the chills coming with “Pure Imagination” and “Oceano,” then made his way to the b-stage at the back of the arena. And that’s when the headliner really heated up, knocking Billy Joel’s “She’s Always A Woman” out of the park on piano, then inviting out “bananas incredible” support act Idina Menzel for the glistening duets “Lullaby” and “Falling Slowly.”

Though each track had a message of its own, frequently within the context of a soundtrack storyline or a morsel of multi-purpose encouragement, “River” specifically went out to those struggling with depression and anxiety. Groban did indeed bring a sense of healing and hope to pretty much everything he touched, which was especially apparent during the finale “You Raise Me Up” when fans shot straight to their feet and genuinely earned an encore.

Why Josh Groban and Idina Menzel Make a Dynamic Duo

Written by Steve Gottfried | November 9, 2018 | Entertainment , Music

idina menzel josh groban tour

Wondering what will happen when Josh Groban and Idina Menzel bring their unique vocal fireworks to a stage near you?

Let’s face it, going to a live concert can be a hassle. Between getting there, navigating the crowds and sitting through opening acts, you’re usually looking at a considerable wait before the headliner performs. But there are some performers who are so good that by the time they sing that first note, you realize that it was all worthwhile.

Josh Groban is one of those performers, especially for Grobanites (like me) who’ve been following him since he first appeared as the super-nerd with Pavarotti pipes on Ally McBeal on May 21, 2001. To Grobanites, it’s an historic date, not to be forgotten. Over the past 17 years, we’ve watched him grow up before our eyes, exceeding any expectation we may have had. There’s something about his unassuming nature that makes his commanding voice even more extraordinary. It’s easy to forget that his easygoing and humble manner belie a voice that puts him in rarefied company with the likes of other premier vocalists who he’s partnered with including Andrea Bocelli, Celine Dion and la Streisand herself.

And so it was on a recent Saturday night at the Los Angeles Forum that he took the stage to promote his new album Bridges . Idina Menzel opened, and what a perfect pairing it was: two unabashed theater nerds and powerhouse vocalists. This theater nerd (yours truly) was geeking-out, big time. Idina took the stage right on time (I appreciate punctuality) in a silver sequined pantsuit that shimmered like a disco ball. And yes, Ms. Menzel, I noticed the matching glitter on your eyelashes. Admittedly, I was not as familiar with her body of work as one might assume. I’m one of those rare individuals who’s never seen Wicked (for which Menzel won the Tony) or Frozen . I mainly knew her as Leah Michele’s mom from Glee . But the moment she opened her mouth and started belting, I was all in. She was evidently thrilled to be playing the Forum and made the most of it; she opened with “The Wizard and I” (from Wicked ) and segued into a stirring rendition of “Don’t Rain on My Parade.” Menzel was amped and personable throughout her 11-song set, sprinkled with hits from Wicked , Frozen and Rent (the musical that first catapulted her to stardom). Having warmed up the crowd for the main course, Menzel exited the stage to a hug from her son.

Enter Josh Groban

A half-hour later, Groban appeared on a moodily lit stage – scruffy, bespectacled and dressed casually in black jeans and a zippered jacket over a v-neck t-shirt. If I’m being straight up honest, he looked like those clothes might’ve been stuffed in a suitcase and thrown on in a hurry without much thought. But that’s part of what I love about him. If Idina looked like she was ready to play the Las Vegas strip, Josh seemed ready to just hang out. But that was fine with me (and the difference between a Bublé fan and a Grobanite, but I digress). Groban started the concert with several songs from his new album (“Bigger Than Us,” “Won’t Look Back,” “Granted”) sprinkled in with songs from past albums (“You Are Loved,” “Pure Imagination,” “Oceano”). His soaring vocals filled the arena. Nobody does heartfelt, inspirational anthems and ballads quite like him.

They were all delivered with the conviction and gorgeous timbre we’ve come to expect from Groban. What comes across so clearly is that, besides possessing a preternaturally spectacular voice, he is refreshingly down-to-earth and unpretentious. In a word, he’s a mensch. Though he’s a multi-platinum recording artist with several Grammy nominations under his belt, he doesn’t miss an opportunity to pay more than lip service to the arts education that played an instrumental role in his development as an artist. He acknowledged the teachers who nurtured him and whom he credits for his success.

As further evidence of this egalitarian, philanthropic spirit, Josh changed things up midway through, moving to a second stage toward the back of the Forum where he performed a handful of songs for the nosebleeds, giving the high-priced ticket holders a chance to crane their necks or enjoy him via projection screen. He sang a beautiful rendition of Billy Joel’s “She’s Always a Woman” which he had previously performed for none other than its author, when Joel was honored with the uber-prestigious Gershwin Prize in 2014.

Groban brought Menzel back on stage (complete with a more subdued but equally dazzling costume change) for a couple of duets (“Lullaby” and “Falling Slowly,” from the musical Once ). Their voices blended beautifully, as you might imagine. He then launched into one of my favorites from his Grammy nominated 2016 Broadway album Stages , “Bring Him Home” from Les Misérables. For a true Grobanite, his performance was akin to a religious experience.

At this point, Josh ran through the crowd, slapping audience members’ hands along the way, where he resumed the concert on the main stage with another song from his new album “Musica del Corazón,” a beautiful Spanish song featuring some amazing guitar work. Josh singled out one of the more personal songs from Bridges called “River” which obliquely touches on his own struggles with anxiety and depression. He then sang “Alla Luce del Sole” (from his first album), followed by “Awake” and then officially finished the night with “You Raise Me Up” backed by the Los Angeles Symphonic Ensemble.

After a perfunctory exit, Josh came back for a two-song encore. Harkening back to his Ally McBeal debut, he sang “To Where You Are,” the song that put him on the map. And I’ll be damned if it didn’t bring me to tears. He then launched into a gorgeous, full-tilt rendition of the title track from Bridges , Paul Simon’s “Bridge Over Troubled Water.” Though Groban maintains a pretty low profile with his political views, he lamented the divisiveness of our current political climate – calling it unlike anything he’s ever experienced in his lifetime. He acknowledged the healing power of music and said that, as a musician, he felt it’s his responsibility to provide that. “We need more bridges, less walls,” he added. Amen to that.

The pair’s U.S. tour wraps up November 18 at Madison Square Garden in New York City, after which Josh continues on to Europe. Tickets and more info are available online.

Adam Berry, paranormal investigator and co-host of the Travel Channel’s Kindred Spirits, released his debut book, Goodbye Hello: Processing Grief and Understanding Death Through the Paranormal this last holiday. Sound a bit morbid for a gift? Not so. The book, thoroughly entertaining, is a positive and hopeful look at the afterlife through stories from Adam’s encounters, supernatural research, and psychology. Add Adam’s touch of queer sensibility and style of storytelling, and you have a touching book that serves as a comfort to those struggling to come to terms with grief and the end of life, themes that can play a heavy hand for those going through loss. Adam began experiencing the paranormal when he was a kid in his childhood home. But it wasn’t until a visit to Gettysburg, in a scene like a movie, that his relationship with the paranormal world would become his life’s journey. After appearing and winning the reality show Ghost Hunters Academy, he and his partner in crime, Amy Bruni, would build their own legacy in the paranormal world with their TV show Kindred Spirits. In this episode, we chat with Adam about the paranormal experience that started it all, understanding grief through the paranormal, life after death, coming out, being part of the LGBTQ community, his theatre work, we tackle the subject of God’s existence, and so much more! It’s a wild ride!

Hosted by Alexander Rodriguez.

Review: Idina Menzel inhabits a magical world in La Jolla Playhouse’s moving ‘Redwood’

Two women near a redwood tree in the musical "Redwood."

The world premiere musical co-conceived by Menzel and playwright-director Tina Landau, with a score by Kate Diaz, is a triumph of groundbreaking media design.

In the spectacularly designed musical “Redwood,” which opened Sunday night in its world premiere at La Jolla Playhouse, California’s redwood forests are a mystical and maternal place of healing and hope for the human characters onstage. And in this groundbreaking, immersive production, the ancient trees cast the same magical spell over the audience.

Co-conceived by its Tony-winning star, Idina Menzel, and director-playwright-co-lyricist Tina Landau, with music and lyrics by Kate Diaz, “Redwood” is a deeply moving story about Jesse Meyers, a grief-stricken woman who walks away from her life in New York and ultimately finds her eureka moment in Eureka, California. There, she finds peace, inspiration and a reason to survive while living 100 feet above the ground in a 2,000-year-old redwood she calls “Stella.”

Idina Menzel in La Jolla Playhouse’s world-premiere musical "Redwood."

As Jesse, Menzel gives a multi-hued, tour de force acting performance that is brittle, unfiltered, anxious, impulsive, heartbreaking and quite funny. Her famously robust voice delivers over and over in the intermissionless two-hour musical, where she never leaves the stage. But Menzel also imbues her songs with great delicacy, heart and emotion, particularly in the numbers “Dear Everyone,” “No Repair” and “Let the Fires Come.”

Menzel may be the show’s human star, but it’s the trees that put “Redwood” on the cutting edge of musical theater innovation.

Diaz has written a film-like, multi-track score that gives angelic voice to the redwoods. Sound designer Jonathan Deans creates the seat-shaking roar of distant falling trees and crackling flames. And media designer Hana S. Kim has created a hyper-realistic animated film and motion-simulating projection design that turns, twists and telescopes upward as the actors move through the stage environment. For SoCal residents, the best way to describe watching “Redwood” is like riding the hang-gliding simulator Soarin’ Over California at Disney California Adventure theme park, but without the piped-in pine aroma.

Two actors on a bare set with colored projections on the walls.

Landau’s engrossing and fast-moving script keeps some of its surprises to the end, but here are the spoiler-free basics of the plot.

Jesse, a hyper-competent events planner who was voted “most likely to succeed” in third grade, realizes she can no longer cope with her demanding job or her 20-year relationship with wife Mel (the wise, warm and velvet-voiced De’Adre Aziza). A year earlier, they suffered a devastating loss. But while Mel is gradually healing, Jesse’s grief remains an open wound. On an impulse and with no destination in mind, Jesse gets in her car and drives west in search of a place where she can breathe again.

She ends up in Eureka, where she meets redwood tree botanists Finn, a rugged, paternal idealist played by Michael Park, and Becca, a young but iron-willed scientist played by Nkeki Ob-Melekwe. Like Jesse, Finn and Becca have suffered losses, walled off their hearts to protect themselves and found silent solace among the trees. The interdependent redwoods, which have survived more than a century of clear-cutting, wildfires and climate change, are a symbol of the resilience and community these three lonely souls desperately need.

Some of the score’s standout songs are the lyrically clever Jesse/Mel duet “Back Then,” the lilting Jesse/Stella duet “Stella” and “Becca’s Song.” But the score’s best number, sung by Zachary Noah Piser, who plays multiple male characters in the story, is “Still,” a ballad so heartrending that many audience members, including me, were wiping away tears.

The musical features orchestrations and arrangements by Diaz; music direction by Haley Bennett; scenery by Jason Ardizzone-West; costumes by Toni-Leslie James; and lighting by Scott Zielinski.

“Redwood” has an honest and profoundly relatable story that’s told in an intimate, unique and breathtaking way. Unlike many new musicals that need more work before they move to Broadway, “Redwood” feels like it’s ready today. And technologically, it feels like the American musical of tomorrow.

Idina Menzel Celebrates 10 Years Since John Travolta’s Oscars Flub: 'Happy 10th Birthday, Adele Dazeem!'

"I hope you have the best, best day," the Broadway star joked in a video shared on her social media

Christopher Polk/Getty

Idina Menzel is celebrating her alter ego's 10th birthday!

In a lighthearted video posted on TikTok and her Instagram Story on Saturday, Menzel, 52, celebrated the fact that it has been 10 years since John Travolta memorably flubbed her name and called her "Adele Dazeem" while introducing her onstage at the 2014 Oscars.

"Hey, Adele Dazeem, it's Idina Menzel. I just want to say happy birthday," the Rent star said in the video. "I'm sending you so much love and positive energy, I hope you have the best, best day.

The actress then sang "Happy Birthday" to her alter ego before signing off. "Have a great one, lots of love, bye!"

She captioned the video: "'Happy 10th Birthday, Adele Dazeem!"

Menzel, who voices Elsa in the hit Disney franchise Frozen , was at the ceremony to perform "Let It Go" when Travolta, 70, mispronounced her name.

"There will always be a special place in my heart for the movie musical and for the songs that create their most memorable moments," he said in his speech. "Here to perform the Oscar-nominated, gorgeously empowering song 'Let It Go,' from the Oscar-winning animated movie Frozen , please welcome the wickedly talented, one and only, Adele Dazeem."

In 2015, Travolta explained on Jimmy Kimmel Live! why he made the gaffe. His explanation had a lot of moving parts to it and even involved being distracted by Goldie Hawn .

Never miss a story — sign up for PEOPLE's free daily newsletter to stay up-to-date on the best of what PEOPLE has to offer, from celebrity news to compelling human interest stories.

“The beautiful news, and Idina actually agrees, is that she’s had one of the best years of her life, and her career. And she gives me credit!” he said after telling the story.

Menzel and Travolta presented together at the 2015 Oscars, and she's joked about his embarrassing mistake over the past decade.

In 2022, the Disenchanted star did the "That's Not My Name" challenge on Instagram and TikTok and included a clip of Travolta's Oscars flub along with clips of the various characters she's played. Instead of a name, there were question marks over the video clip.
