Top 10: best First Class amenity kits

Monday newsletters  always feature  top 10 travel lists  to inspire.

Today (May 16, 2017): Top 10 most luxurious First Class amenity kits.

Complimentary First Class amenity kits are a surprisingly big business for airlines. The luxury offerings are constantly being revamped to incorporate new high-profile fashion designers in order to give frequent fliers something to look forward to, and most importantly, a reason to stay loyal. First Class kits are usually packed with pamper products from top beauty brands — including Aesop, Aromatherapy, Bulgari, and Ferragamo — to keep passengers feeling hydrated and rejuvenated while in the sky. Some major airlines now also offer their premium passengers designer in-flight sleeper suits and slippers to ensure the ultimate comfort during overnight long-haul flights. I teamed up with  Business Insider  to rank the 10 best kits in First Class travel.

There is more information (with flight reviews) below the slideshow. Think I missed one? Share your favorite First Class amenity kit in the comments section , or take my  poll  below.

The refreshed Delta One kits have been created in collaboration with two premium brands — luggage specialist TUMI and American cosmetics brand Kiehl’s — and are offered on Transoceanic international flights, as well as on routes between JFK and Los Angeles or San Francisco international airports. Passengers travelling outbound from the US receive a navy hard-sided amenity kit, while customers heading to the US can expect a soft-sided black kit. The packs contain Kiehl’s lip balm and a grapefruit-scented deluxe hand and body lotion with aloe vera and oatmeal. Delta Comfort+ customers travelling on international flights also receive a Rest and Refresh pack with eye shades, ear plugs, and a dental kit containing Colgate toothpaste.

The stylish washbags have a contemporary look, using prints from Liberty London’s textiles archive. The women’s version features the eye-catching ‘Christelle’ oriental inspired floral print, and comes with a convenient wristlet. The men’s washbag is made of a black embossed textured exterior, with ‘Felix Raison’ paisley motif printed lining. 1. EMIRATES

There was truly no expense spared in the creation of Emirates’ new First Class amenity kits. The airline offers the world’s first moisturising lounge wear designed for passengers travelling in its first class cabins on overnight long-haul flights. The suits use a patented technology designed to keep skin hydrated during the flight, and also lock in the moisture for up to 10 washes, so they can be re-used by other passengers. Packaged in a stylish felt pouch, the suits come with matching slippers and eye mask. The new amenity kits, offered to both First and Business Class passengers on long-haul flights, feature Bulgari’s woody floral fragrance – Eau Parfumée au thé noir — and contain skincare essentials to keep customers feeling pampered throughout the flight. The First Class kit bags are made from real leather, and come in eight designs in charcoal grey for men and pale grey for women.

8 Ways to Marie Kondo Your Excess Airline Amenity Kits

Katherine Fan

Sometimes, an AvGeek can have too many perks. The swag from traveling first class either reminds you of a great experience, like one TPG reader's luxury-travel trip around the world for just $273 in cash , or reminds you to clean house -- Marie Kondo style . Excess tubes of toothpaste, earplugs, eye masks -- and so many kit bags. If these kits no longer bring you joy, they might bring some happiness to others.

Here's what some of TPG 's top travelers are doing with their amenity kit surplus.

Collect and display them with pride

Amenity kits can range from generic, soft black pouches to limited editions, discontinued brands and exclusive collaborations. If you have some unique pieces, show them off! Your favorite amenity kits make great AvGeek or travel fanatic keepsakes. TPG Lounge member Lara S. stores her prized amenity kits on a shelf in her office as a reminder of cool trips she's been able to take. "Can't wait to add my United 747 commemorative container to my Olympics [trip amenity kit]," she said.

TPG Lounge member Aaron Bertrand showed off his amenity kit collection. Image courtesy of Aaron Bertrand.

Some of the best kits become heirlooms. "I'm pretty sure I have a Concorde amenity kit my dad got," Lounge member John S. told TPG .

Repurpose the kits

Many travelers told us they save and reuse amenity kit cases, pouches and bags to sort small travel items.

"They are excellent travel organizers," TPG reader Brian S. said. He uses the kits to hold everything, including "cords for my electronics, medicines/vitamins, amenities when I'm in economy, even instant coffee and snacks." TPG Lounge moderator Ross Binkley agrees. "The hard-shell ones are great for keeping small items from getting crushed in your bag as you're traveling."

The collectible Rimowa amenity kit.

Large pouches are perfect for storing electronic devices such as tablets.

Check out some of Team TPG's favorite amenity kits.

A number of travelers told TPG they use zippered pouches to keep track of small items inside luggage or bags. "I use the soft ones to corral loose things in suitcases and my purse," said TPG reader Carry B.

Give kits to someone who will appreciate them

Do you know someone who loves aviation, but doesn't get to fly very often? Share the love! A friend made TPG reader Daniel L.'s day by gifting him an unused Delta One Tumi amenity kit . "Guess I need to find a store to get this pretty thing personalized!" he shared with TPG Lounge in June 2018.

Another TPG Lounge member asked the community to help make her AvGeek son's dreams come true. "My son is turning 9 at the start of April," said Bevin C., "... what he really wants is to fly flatbed first class so he can 'experience it and get the fancy amenity bag.' I can't make the first part of it come true right now, but I thought there may be a few frequent flyers who could pop one in the mail and make his birthday wish come true — well, part of it, at least!" More than a dozen kind TPG readers sent leftover kits from their own travels, with Clare footing the bill for postage.

Clare isn't the only traveler whose children appreciate the kits. They make "great souvenirs for the kids," said reader Bryan S. Gema F. added that her kids enjoy "collecting the best kits."

Omar A. shares in another way: "I normally give them away to a patient at a hospice center with a little note and souvenir," he told TPG .

Donate them to charity

"I volunteer at Walter Reed [Army Medical Center]," said TPG reader Lisa A. , who suggested donating extra amenity kits to the Red Cross branch of military hospitals for patients and their families, who often travel long distances on short notice. "I ask all of my family and friends to bring me shampoo, conditioner, soap and all the travel size stuff from hotels — it all really comes in handy. At Walter Reed, we maintain a stock room for families and patients of these types of supplies, and we also provide a welcome bag to patients [who have been medically evacuated] from overseas. There are many patients and families living in dorms for extended treatment which we distribute these to as well."

Other donation recipients include facilities that serve victims of domestic abuse, who "almost always have to leave with nothing," said TPG reader Jane R., who donates her extra kits to the local shelter. Another reader concurs: "I had to use a domestic violence crisis center," said Lounge member Jan T. "Even though I stayed in my own home, I didn't have extra cash for little luxuries to pamper myself."

Homeless shelters can use individually packaged supplies. A number of New Yorkers — including many at the TPG office — donate unused kits to the Bowery Mission on the Lower East Side. On the West Coast, TPG reader Janet K. and a number of community members donated their time and amenity kits to a 2018 supply drive for personal hygiene kits for 17,000 homeless students in the greater Los Angeles region.

Photo courtesy of TPG reader Janet Kim.

Holidays are a good time to pass along unused kits, some TPG readers told us. "I amass these items to give to my local charity's annual holiday drive to give to cancer patients at Miami's county hospital," said Caroline B., who said she also shows proof of her charity work to collect additional unused products from airlines and hotels.

Hand them out to someone in need

"Fill them with basic toiletries and a few granola bars [and] keep them in your car," suggests TPG reader Jack V., "and pass them out whenever you encounter homeless people."

Cindy H. agrees. "I keep amenity kits and hotel toiletries for homeless people," she said. "I make goodie bags that I keep in my car and hand them over to homeless people at traffic lights."

One reader told TPG about a teacher who creates feminine hygiene kits for young girls and slips them discreetly into backpacks and purses for unexpected emergencies.

Save them for house guests and Airbnb rentals

"I give them to friends and family who might appreciate having a nice kit for their luggage," said TPG Lounge member David B. "I also keep a bunch of the amenities for when guests stay over at my home. It's great if they forgot to bring something!"

Fellow reader Chris M. does the same. "I load up my guest bathroom so that anyone coming over is covered for the basics," said Martin.

Resell them

Some frequent flyers resell their kits online. "I sell mine on eBay," Kenny L. told TPG . "They usually go for anywhere from $15-$30, depending which airline and what's in the bag."

You can find almost any type of amenity kit on eBay.

It isn't illegal to sell your frequent flyer amenity kits so long as they are part of the airline perks for premium cabin passengers. The bonus income can pad the change jar toward your next vacation or suitcase splurge. Be sure that you bring home and resell only the items that were expressly given (such as pajamas). As a general rule, airline blankets, pillows and bottles of champagne are not yours for the taking.

Politely decline them

If you don't need the amenity kit and just want to simplify your travel experience, simply decline or return your unused amenity kit. Frequent flyer and TPG Lounge member Drew J. leaves behind 90% of his amenity kits, he said, adding, "I just leave them on the plane at this point!" Fellow TPG reader Andrew M. agreed, "I don't need more stuff to travel with."

What do you do with your amenity kits? Do you have a tip to offer that we overlooked here?

The Best Amenity Kits in First Class

Sometimes, it’s the small things..

  • Copy Link copied

It’s the little things that count, right? So, while extra legroom and large seatbacks make flying immensely more comfortable, let’s not overlook the little luxuries that come inside an amenity kit.

If a complimentary toothbrush, eye mask, and a tiny bottle of liquor can make a flight that much better, imagine what designer bags filled with high-end goodies can do. The following are the best amenity kits under the sun, stuffed with luxury products to make flying more comfortable and passengers more attractive all over the world.

1. KLM Royal Dutch Airlines: The Dutch airline is keeping things contemporary by partnering with one of today’s top design teams, Viktor and Rolf, who design a new amenity bag for KLM every year. The current kit turns into a chic wristlet and comes packed with regular essentials plus a ballpoint pen, chapstick and cozy socks.

2. JetBlue: While you don’t necessarily associate JetBlue with luxury, that’s about to change. JetBlue’s new premium-seating category, Mint, features a Birchbox amenity kit. Known as the leading beauty product subscription service, Birchbox is supplying JetBlue Mint customers with items like Benefit mascara, Supergoop! hand cream, Klorane Smoothing and Relaxing Eye Patches, Baxter pomade and Jack Black lip balm. Coast-to-coast flying never looked so good.

3. Swiss International Air Lines: First class passengers aboard a Swiss Air flight are gifted with a Bally-designed bag stuffed with products by luxury beauty brand La Prairie. Staying fresh on an international flight is easy with La Prairie’s cellular time-release moisturizer and cellular eye contour cream. Slip into your complimentary cotton pajamas by legendary underwear-maker Zimmerli and you’ll forget you’re on a plane entirely.

4. Turkish Airlines: While you may not be traveling via Porsche, you may as well be with Turkish Airlines’ sleek hard case created for first class flyers by Porsche Design. What can later be used as a computer case is stuffed with items from Italian skincare company Acca Kappa‘s “Green Mandarin” line.

5. Emirates: Women flying first or business class via Emirates are treated like queens with a brown suede-style Bulgari pouch worthy of a night out on the town filled with products like Bulgari-designed perfume, pajamas and face lotion. Men in business or first receive a beautiful Italian leather Bulgari dopp kit fit for a king complete with Bulgari cologne, pajamas and aftershave along with a Taylor’s of Old Bond Street reusable razor.

6. Virgin Atlantic: The British airline recently launched a new amenity kit made from sustainable materials, and while it may be recycled, it definitely doesn’t look it. The black silk-lined carrier with a leather-like strap is chic enough to be used as a tech case once you are done with the ultra soft socks and eyeshade.

7. Air France: Passengers lucky enough to be flying Air France’s ultra luxe La Premiere class receive a leather carrier designed by Givenchy. While the bag is beautiful, it’s what’s inside that counts, and boy, does it get better. Inside the black case you will find Biologique Recherche face cream and fatigue-preventing roll-on ointment for the eyes, a selection of Givenchy toiletries, and an oshibori towel.

These Airlines' Luxe Gifts for First-Class Passengers Are Out of This World

F irst-class flying is more than Champagne and caviar. The world’s most lavish first-class cabins also shower you with luxe airline amenity kits to pack into your carry-on.

Multi-course feasts designed by top chefs and 600-thread-count organic cotton bedding are not enough in these skies, where first-class carriers outdo themselves in bestowing take-home amenities. From Salvator Ferragamo bags to Bvlgari perfume, these goodies distinguish airlines in the battle for the highest paying passengers.

“Lufthansa amenity kits are an absolute differentiator for us,” Lufthansa spokesperson Jörg Waber tells Matador . “We take care that we have the newest state-of-the-art designs from the highest quality brands.” Those top-notch brands have included Rimowa, Porsche Design, Sinn, and Jil Sander, all of them German, and personal care products from Swiss brand La Prairie.

Pajamas folded on an airplane seats. Those pajamas are offered as part of a luxe airline amenity kit by German airline Lufthansa.

Lufthansa also updates the men’s and women’s amenity kits every few months, so frequent travelers don’t tire of the offerings. Each kit has a bamboo dental set, socks, eye mask, cosmetics from La Prairie, a hairbrush made from biodegradable material, earplugs, a bamboo shoe horn, and a thoughtful box of peppermints. And let’s not forget the pajamas and slippers for overnight flights.

While that’s plenty of pampering for a nine-hour flight from Berlin to New York, a non-stop from Dubai to Los Angeles takes over 16 hours. The discerning (and wealthy or well-employed) passenger may desire even more luxury — and Emirates obliges.

First-class luxe airline amenity kits

The Dubai-based carrier doesn’t just give its first-class passengers any old pajama set. Their loungewear actually moisturizes your tender skin during that Dubai to LA journey. And for those long-haul flights on several of Emirates’ aircrafts, you can shut the door in your own spacious first-class suite. Naturally, if you or your company are shelling out for a posh personal cocoon, you need to have all the schwag that comes with it.

“Emirates’ First Class suites are designed to offer the ultimate in comfort, luxury and privacy, and the amenity kits perfectly reflect this ethos,” Essa Sulaiman Ahmad, Emirates’ Divisional Vice-President, USA & Canada, says via email. “Emirates prides itself on prioritizing our passengers’ comfort and wellbeing and spares no expense when it comes to these offerings.”

The round-trip fare for a first-class suite on Emirates’ Dubai to LA route starts at roughly $13,000, which is pricey enough but below its pre-COVID-19 peak. It’s also much less than flying private, which is the only swankier way to travel, according to the Emirates’ website: “As close as it comes to your own private jet.”

You’ll get your own ultra-comfy eye shades and cozy slippers, in snazzy felt pouches, plus the aforementioned Emirates’ Hydra Active moisturizing sleepwear. The pajamas retain their moisturizing qualities for up to ten washes, so you can keep your skin silky soft at home, too. Then, presumably, you’ll need to take another first-class flight — or order the PJ’s on Emirates’ shopping site.

You can also hydrate using the BYREDO travel wellness products: a cleansing towelette, facial toner, eye cream, chamomile sleep oil, and chamomile pillow mist spray. These are paired with a handy notebook and pen that you can also pop into your carry-on.

Luxe amenity kit from Emirates. The kit is filled with BVlgari products.

Photo: Emirates

But BYREDO products are only the start. First-class suite passengers also get Bvlgari amenity kits loaded with niceties, among them Bylgari body lotion, lip balm, men’s or women’s deodorant, and a hair brush. Men also get Bvlgari aftershave, a razor, and shaving foam. The fanciest things in the kits are the Bvlgari fragrances – such Bvlgari Le Gemme Eau de Parfum “Tygar” for him and, for her, Bvlgari Le Gemme Eau de Parfum “Rubinia,” the latter retailing at $100 per ounce.

While Emirates has teamed with Bvlgari, Etihad features first-class luxe airline amenity kits created by the century-old Italian label Acqua di Parma, and EVA Air’s amenities are made by haute couture brand Salvatore Ferragamo.

One of the most luxe airline amenity kits in the world is the one from Singapore Airlines which contains products from Lalique for men and women

Photo: Singapore Airlines

In its own first-class suites, Singapore Airlines provides pajamas, socks, slippers, eyeshades, and luxe airline amenity kits designed by the luxury label Lalique. The mini fragrances in these kits are Lalique Encre Noire for him and, for her, L’amour Lalique, a 3.3-ounce bottle of which costs $175.

Not to be outdone, AirFrance also offers first-class suites on its long haul flights, (although they come with curtains on one side, not a door) and lays down a memory foam mattress when it’s time to snooze. Cathay Pacific meets that mattress with 600-thread count organic cotton sheets.

The first-class luxe airline amenities travelers really want

You can’t take the mattress or the sheets home — but, then again, an informal poll of frequent travelers who often fly first class revealed that luxe airline amenity kits are not their main priority. A female traveler said that while she loves the kits, they wouldn’t be the reason for choosing one airline over another. A male traveler, on the other hand, lamented that while he appreciates a good toothbrush, the “useless packaging, unused creams and ointments” add up to “so much waste.”

Airlines are aware of customers’ sustainability concerns — hence the move to organic products on many of them. Emirates has also introduced greener materials in its kits, including rice paper packaging for dental kits, along with brushes, combs, toothbrushes, and mirrors made from wheat straw.

At Lufthansa, Waber says, “Sustainability is a very important subject for our customers and of course for our company. Therefore all the kits must have a second use purpose and we already removed plastic, wherever it was possible,” he says.

Delta has gone a step further, eschewing the faux leather bags by big-name labels altogether. Last month, Delta introduced boho-chic pouches made from 50 percent recycled and 50 percent locally sourced cotton, hand-stitched by artisans in Mexico through the certified B-Corp Someone Somewhere. The kits keep it simple with an eye mask, bamboo toothbrush, eco toothpaste, lip balm, and hand cream.

One the most eco-friendly luxe airline amenity kits is Delta's kit with a hand woven pouch and a bamboo toothbrush

Photo: Delta Air Lines

Delta spokesperson Grant Myatt shared with us, “The new amenity kit eliminates five single-use plastic items like zippers and packaging, reducing Delta’s annual plastic use by 90,000 pounds. The traditional loom techniques and artisanal production processes also eliminate waste.”

Still, an inordinate amount of lip balm and hand cream tubes get left behind. In our poll, only half the travelers said they bring the kits home. What they value is the in-flight experience itself — starting with a private, comfortable, lie-flat bed. After that, they stressed the importance of good food and drink. Many carry their own noise-canceling headphones, even though the top first-class cabins we researched all offer these.

It seems, though, that even the most jaded jetsetters can be softies for elegant touches — like the single scarlet blossom in a thin white vase at each first class seat.

A red rose is part of Lufthansa's luxury offerings for its first-class passengers

“The most popular item in First Class is our caviar service and the iconic First Class red rose (which is much appreciated by our guests),” Lufthansa’s Waber says.

Travel + Leisure / Tyler Roeland

Flying isn’t always glamorous. Your destination might be luxurious, but getting from point A to point B can be uncomfortable, especially if you encounter delays and find yourself shoulder-to-shoulder on crowded economy flights. It’s no surprise then that savvy travelers are building in-flight pamper kits to make their travel journeys more comfortable — dare I say, even indulgent . If a first-class upgrade is out of budget, an in-flight pamper kit could be your ticket to a business class experience.

In fact, there's already an Amazon storefront dedicated to this new travel phenomenon. Created by travel content creator Kari Herrera (aka Chicagoings ), the curated page features essentials like noise-canceling headphones and various wellness products and toiletries to promote a relaxing in-flight experience. "I've found myself in situations where I've had to sleep in airports and hop on connecting flights for a timely arrival," Herrera told Travel + Leisure . "Things sometimes don't go to plan. Still, I always want to feel I'm meeting my hygiene standards, no matter the situation.”

Beyond the core basics, a pamper kit is customizable to your chosen comforts and is intended to help you "feel clean and comfortable in a pinch while traveling," according to Herrera. So, as you build yours, think of your self-care simple pleasures, whether that’s the scent of your favorite lotion or a square of good dark chocolate. Like your travels, enjoy the journey of making your kit, and Kari urged travelers to remember that “all the wonderful things in life come in a travel size.”

Here’s a look inside Hererra’s in-flight pamper kit.

Sony Wireless Noise-Canceling Headphones

A pair of noise-canceling headphones is a traveler’s best friend. Not only do they help mute the drone of the airplane, but they also drown out crying babies and other in-flight noises. These industry-leading noise-canceling headphones, which are up to 35 percent off, can transport you to a Caribbean destination with the help of an ocean waves soundtrack, or get you hyped for your trip with a curated playlist. Even better, these wireless Sony headphones come with a 3.5mm headphone jack and cable so you can link them up to your airplane’s seat back console and enjoy what's queued up.

Trtl Travel Neck Pillow

For long-haul flights where you can’t lie flat, a neck pillow will help you arrive well-rested. This supportive neck pillow design from Trtl is customized to your preferred fit. With over 19,000 five-star ratings, it's well-tested and comes recommended by frequent travelers . I like that it folds flat so you can slip it in your bag instead of wearing it around the airport like a human ring-toss.

Mzoo Sleep Eye Mask

A light-blocking sleep mask can help you get some shut-eye when bright seatback screens and open window blinds are preventing you from relaxing. For Herrara, it's an essential part of her in-flight routine: "Even on a double-decker, I can put on my sheet mask, eye mask, and noise-canceling headphones to feel as if I'm all alone in the sky. Then, when I land, I feel well-rested, happy, and ready for whatever the day brings."

This Mzoo mask features concave windows for your eyes so you don’t feel pressure on your eyelid as you sleep, which one shopper noted is the feature that sets this mask apart from the rest: “Unlike flat masks that can press against your eyes and eyelashes, the Mzoo mask fits snugly without any discomfort." With over 70,000 five-star ratings, this eye mask has everything you need for quality in-flight snoozing; it comes with ear plugs and a carrying case for easy packing.

Packism Clear TSA-Approved Toiletry Bag Set

Frequent travelers know that a clear toiletry bag helps you (and everyone else) get through TSA security faster, calmer, and more efficiently. Instead of having all of your liquids loose in a bin, keep them tidy and together in this transparent case that you can quickly put back in your carry-on. Once you get on the flight, you can pull out your pamper kit and quickly find what you need without having to rifle around. According to one reviewer , the trio "helped organize other items in my luggage for easy grab-and-go." And, take it from Herrera: "Less stress is the goal."

L'Occitane Ultra-Rich 10% Shea Butter Nourishing Lip Balm Stick

Having chapped lips on a long-haul flight is a discomfort that I wouldn't wish on anyone. This ultra-rich shea butter lip balm is colorless and hydrating. Unlike lip gloss or lipstick, a good lip balm won’t make your lips feel tacky or chalky. One repeat buyer described its moisturizing power best in their review, noting that it's "very moisturizing for lips without stickiness or slick oil feeling. It has decent staying power and there's no need to reapply… It keeps lips hydrated and smooth." Buy a few of these lip balms and tuck them in the pockets of all of your travel bags so you never have to remember to pack them.

Dr. Fresh Travel Oral Hygiene Kit

Long flights, irregular meal times, and consuming different cuisines can all contribute to oral discomfort like bad breath and that fuzzy mouth feeling. Stay fresh while you travel with this oral hygiene kit that comes equipped with a travel-sized toothbrush, a travel-sized toothpaste tub, and travel-sized bottle of mouth wash so you can brush your teeth or, at the very least, rinse with a swish of mouthwash. Mint is also an energizing scent and can help perk you up during a long travel day.

While talking to T+L , Herrera said, "If you are facing a delayed flight and have not seen a proper bathroom in over 12 hours, brushing your teeth and freshening up may trick your mind into feeling like your journey has only just begun."

Rosarden Travel Mini Perfume Refillable Atomizer Container

Scent is our most powerful sense. A quick spritz of your favorite essential oil, aftershave, or perfume can instantly set you at ease on a stressful travel day — just ask Herrera, who shared, "In addition to dental and body cleansing products, small comforts, such as a discreet, enjoyable fragrance, go a long way to boost our mood and give us the pick-me-up needed to think clearly."

These portable misters can be thrown in a bag without fear of breaking or leaking thanks to their durable aluminum construction. One Amazon buyer noted how great these are for travel: “These are so convenient and save so much space when I'm traveling. They were easy to fill up and see how much in them so you never randomly run out.” Save space in your toiletry bag by leaving your full-sized perfume bottle at home and only take what you need.

TonyMoly I'm Real Sheet Mask Set

“For some, wearing a sheet or foot mask on a plane is overkill,” Herrera said. “That's why all pamper kits are different.” But, a face mask on the plane could get you in vacation mode before you even touch down at your destination. Plus, airplanes are notorious for having dry air that can leave your skin dehydrated, tight, and oily. So, you can kick back and relax knowing that these TonyMoly sheet masks will help add moisture back to your skin, giving you a brighter, dewy complexion.

Megababe The Smoothie Deo Daily Deodorant

Running to the gate, stressing over the flight details, or changes in indoor and outdoor temperatures can affect how your body sweats. Often, a second application of deodorant or antiperspirant is needed to keep you feeling and smelling fresh — after all, when traveling on airplanes in close quarters with others, maintaining scent hygiene is a golden rule of travel etiquette. That's why Herrera follows this rule of thumb when packing: "Think of the items that you use every morning. These include a toothbrush, toothpaste, floss, body wipes, and deodorant. These items should never go in checked luggage. It would be best to have them on you in your pamper kit."

As her go-to deodorant, it's the Megababe Smoothie Deo, which is made with brightening fruit enzymes and makes odors disappear with its pH-balancing lemon, orange, and bilberry formula.

L'Occitane Shea Butter Hand Cream

A long travel day will have you frequently washing and sanitizing your hands. This frequent hand-washing, though necessary, dries out your hands and cuticles and leaves your skin prone to cracking. Once you settle in your seat for the flight, apply a rich hand cream to rehydrate your skin and pamper yourself in-flight. This French-made hand cream from Herrera's kit is formulated with moisturizing shea butter and uses recycled aluminum packaging.

Neutrogena Makeup Remover Wipes Singles

These compostable makeup-removing wipes are individually wrapped and made for travel. Most face wipes come in a big, brick-sized package, but you may not have room for that in your bag. Use these to remove day-old makeup, or cleanse your skin of sweat and dirt build-up mid-flight. Enriched with hydrating micellar water, these travel-sized wipes condition as they cleanse and they're easy to pop in a toiletry bag.

Wander Beauty Baggage Claim Under-Eye Patches

A long day of travel shows on your face first in the form of dark circles and puffiness. Travel scenarios like irregular sleep schedules and salty airplane snacks can contribute to skin fatigue that shows under the eyes. For a quick spa treatment in the sky, these under-eye masks can rehydrate and firm the sensitive under-eye skin. Amazon buyers noted how much they liked that these patches stayed put once you put them on, even if you weren’t reclined, making them perfect for in-flight use.

Evian Facial Spray

Much like a sauna or spa facial, this hydrating spray adds moisture directly back into the skin. Recycled air on a flight can be very drying, and a quick spritz of a mist can refresh the skin without adding oily ingredients. You can even put this on top of makeup as a hydrating setting spray. The 1.7-ounce travel size is small and perfect for fitting in your carry-on bag.

The travel essentials we’re most excited for in 2024

Whether your next trip involves a first-class ticket or a full tank of gas, here’s the gear—from featherlight binocs to sustainable bags—you should pack.

A rain jacket, sandals, first aid kit, solar panel, binoculars, hiking boots, battery, dog collar, packing cube, and suitcase against a bright blue background.

What do all successful travelers have in common? Often, it’s an arsenal of great gear. After all, what you pack can make a big difference when exploring the best of the world . For our annual Gear of the Year list, National Geographic travel editors searched far and wide for the coolest products to pack. We also asked experts—from pro cyclists to adventure photographers—what they look for in everything from bike racks to binoculars. Here’s what we’re most excited to take with us in 2024.

Our picks for the best travel essentials

Top travel essentials for your next trip, durable roller bag for tight spaces: cotopaxi allpa.

A purple Cotopaxi Allpa Roller Bag on a dark beige background.

Award-winning travel journalist Tim Neville has journeyed on yaks, buses, and “countless heaving boats” and says that when it comes to packs, “a water-resistant exterior, beefy zippers, and soft, tough sides are non-negotiable.”

The newest Cotopaxi Allpa has two sturdy wheels made to handle cobblestone streets, stairs, and other rough surfaces. Like earlier versions of the bag, it’s constructed of 100 percent recycled pre-consumer waste (extra materials from the manufacturing process) and features a split-case design and mesh compartments for intuitive organization.

Buy it now:   REI, from $350,   38L   (carry-on compatible) and   65L | Amazon, $349.99

100 percent recycled backpacks: Patagonia Black Hole Collection

Patagonia Black Hole Duffel 55 L on a dark gray background.

Patagonia’s popular duffel bag collection is now completely made from post-consumer recycled (used materials diverted from landfills) polyester ripstop that resists tearing. The Fair Trade Certified pieces still come with a weather-resistant TPU-film laminate coating, rendering them virtually indestructible. We like the addition of a new interior pocket for stashing smaller valuables, such as cords and keys. For even more convenience, look for a duffel with wheels rolling out in August. Available in multiple styles and sizes.

Shop the collection now:   Patagonia, $35-$419

GPS tracker/virtual fence dog collar: Halo Collar 3

Halo 3 GPS tracker collar and phone with map on an orange background.

Halo’s newest GPS tracking collar not only keeps tabs on dogs with a propensity to escape or wander, it also lets you set a virtual fence to keep them confined to a geographic area, such as a campsite. It takes time for pups to acclimate to the collar’s alerts, which vary from beeps to vibrations—but the Halo app comes loaded with training tips. Available in small and medium/large for dogs 20 pounds and up.

Buy it now:   Amazon, $699, plus a subscription starting at $5.99/month

Fast-drying wool base layer: Ibex Woolies Pro Tech

Ibex Women's Woolies Pro Tech Crew on an olive green background.

Ibex’s new collection (tops, bottoms, boxer briefs) is constructed from Nuyarn, purportedly the world’s first performance wool. It’s made from non-twisted fibers, enabling the wool to retain more of its natural properties, such as body temperature regulation. The company claims that this lets the fabric dry five times faster than conventional 100 percent, ring-spun merino wool. It also weighs 35 percent less and offers 35 percent more stretch.

Buy it now:   Ibex (Men’s), $115   |   Ibex (Women’s), $115

Recyclable rain jacket: Patagonia Boulder Fork

Green Patagonia Boulder Fork Rain Jacket on a blue background.

Patagonia has plenty of outerwear made from recycled material. This rain jacket, however, is the first from the 50-year-old company that you can recycle. We like the adjustable cuffs, hem, and hood (great for keeping extra dry) and the three zippered chest pockets, which give you plenty of places to stash your things. The sleek, not-too-boxy silhouette is an added bonus.

Buy it now:   Patagonia (Men's) $229   |   Patagonia (Women's), $229

Waterproof, sustainable hiking boots: Oboz Cottonwood

class travel kit bag

This new boot, ideal for day hikes on uneven, wet terrain, is the Montana-based company ’s most sustainable yet. Both the low- and mid-profile designs incorporate at least 20 percent recycled, responsibly sourced materials by weight. Even better, Oboz’s “B-DRY” lining is designed to maximize waterproofing and breathability—top qualities to look for in hiking boots, especially for trekking through tropical regions or cruising around on Zodiacs.

Buy it now:   Zappos   (Men’s), $155   |   Zappos   (Women’s), $155

Featherlight binoculars: Swarovski Optik CL Curio

Swarovski Optik CL Curio Binoculars on a beige background.

Slightly larger than a deck of cards and weighing just 8.9 ounces, Swarovski’s Optik CL Curio binoculars are the lightest, most compact binoculars we’ve found—exactly what you want in the field. With a sleek, seamless bridge by industrial designer Marc Newson , they’re also pretty stylish. With 7x magnification, a 21mm effective objective lens diameter, 7.7° field of view, and 90 percent light transmission, you’ll be able to discern a border collie from a coyote at 100 yards away and count the cracks in the craters of the moon at night.

Buy it now:   Amazon, $899

Budget-friendly, feature-loaded binoculars: Nocs Field Issue

NOCS Field Issue on a blue background.

Birdwatchers on a budget will appreciate Nocs’ new Field Issue, which marries the high-quality optics of the Pro Issue with the size and durability of the Standard Issue . It’s ideal for an off-road adventure when you want a super-wide, crisp view in a variety of lighting conditions. Like all the company’s binoculars, this mid-size (it weighs 16.7 ounces) pair is waterproof and fog-proof. But unlike other models, it features the brand’s finest central focusing. While it comes with a cleaning cloth and strap, consider upgrading to a harness to prevent it from awkwardly swinging around your neck.

Buy it now:   Nocs Provisions, $175

Carry-on that converts into a table: PROPS

PROPS 22in bag in white on four supporting legs on an orange background.

This hard-side carry-on has fold-out legs that turn the suitcase into a footrest or a table for your laptop during layovers or travel delays. It’s great for small hotel rooms without luggage racks. The built-in compression packing system and space-saving clamshell opening holds a surprising amount for a 22-inch bag. Look for a 26-inch model in October 2024.

Buy it now:   Magellan’s, $329

Super grippy water sandals: Teva Hydratrek

class travel kit bag

Inspired by tree frogs, Teva’s latest sandal is built so that a maximum amount of surface area on the outsole stays in contact with the ground. Extra texturing on the top sole helps wet feet stay put, while the quick-dry, traceable recycled webbing helps with durability. An added bonus for light packers: These are water sandals you can also hike in.

Buy it now:   Zappos   (Men’s), $85   |   Zappos   (Women’s), $85

Robust, fast charger: Anker Prime Power Bank 250W

Anker Prime Power Bank 250W on a dark gray background.

At 27,650 mAh, Anker’s newest model is packed with power. “At least 20,000 mAh is the sweet spot because it allows me to charge my phone four to five times and my laptop once or twice,” says Barry Hoffner, founder of the education nonprofit Caravan to Class , who relied on a power bank while taking public buses across more than 170 countries.

This new model takes 28 minutes to charge a 16-inch MacBook Pro to 50 percent—a big improvement from last year’s 140W model, which took 40. Yet, at 99.54 watt hours, it still falls under TSA’s 100-watt-hour limit for carry-on packing. Pairing and Bluetooth connectivity via the Anker app enables you to track it if you lose it.

Buy it now:   Amazon, $179.99

Portable solar panel: BigBlue SolarPowa 30 ETFE Camping Solar Panel Charger

BigBlue SolarPowa 30 against an olive green background

BigBlue’s latest travel-friendly solar panel is now made with an ETFE layer, a fluorine-based plastic that can withstand high temperatures. It also resists water, dust, corrosion, and stains. This model reportedly lasts twice as long as a traditional panel and folds to the size of a 14-inch laptop—which not only saves space, but also exposes less surface area to damaging elements.

Buy it now:   Amazon, $79.99

Endlessly customizable backpack: Osprey Archeon

Osprey Archeon backpack on an orange background.

Osprey’s new Archeon set lets you customize your pack via quick-release straps—ideal for when you’re trekking and don’t want to take your full 60L kit on shorter day hikes. Start with the foundational day pack and add accordingly. The chest rig, which straps over your shoulders like a BabyBjorn, maximizes versatility. You can wear it backward, forward, and around your waist like a fanny pack—just attach the day pack’s removable hip belt. Each piece sold separately.

Shop   the collection now:   Osprey, $50-$300

Padded storage cube: Away, The Protective Packing Cube (6L)

Away F.A.R. Padded Organizational Cube packed with sunglasses, binoculars, and cords on a blue background.

Part of Away’s outdoor-centric For All Routes (F.A.R.) collection, the sturdy 6L packing cube has extra padding and six customizable dividers for storing fragile items, like larger electronics or a small pair of binoculars. A removable shoulder strap lets you wear the cube as a crossbody bag when you need to transport just a few things from your suitcase. Plus, it’s made of recycled materials and ships in compostable packaging.

Buy it now:   Away, $72

Heavy-duty universal bike rack: Thule Epos

Thule Epos bike rack on a olive green background.

A good bike rack should have turn and brake signals, according to retired professional cyclist George Hincapie .

Thule’s newest model includes both signals, plus telescopic arms with pivoting cradles that let you attach any type of bike, even an e-bike weighing up to 60 pounds. It works on any car; in some cases with an easy-to-install hitch. We especially appreciate that it folds up and wheels away for storage. (It weighs just 38 pounds.)

Buy it now:   REI, $999.95   |   Amazon, $999.95

Dog harness/rescue sling: Fido Pro Panza

Panza Harness and Deployable Emergency Dog Rescue Sling on a light beige background.

Hiking in remote areas with your dog can be risky, especially since search and rescue often isn’t equipped for pups. Vets recommend it’s best to be prepared and to think in advance how you can get your dog out of a difficult situation. It’s also a great idea to pack a rescue harness. We like this newly patented harness because it converts into a sling that you can wrap around your dog without too much maneuvering. Included custom pads can save your shoulders over longer distances too. Fits most breeds 35-120 pounds.

Buy it now:   Backcountry, $139

Dog first aid travel kits: Wolf Republic First Aid Kit & Adventure Dog Medical Kit

Wolf Republic 76-piece kit First-aid kit on an orange background.

Having a dog-specific first aid kit can be especially handy while traveling, especially if you're doing adventurous or sporty activities. We love Wolf Republic’s loaded kit for longer trips and Adventure Ready’s compact one for short day hikes. Both come stocked with vet-approved must-haves including triple antibiotic spray, self-adhesive bandages, saline wash, and tweezers.

Buy it now:   Wolf Republic First Aid Kit, $56

Buy it now:   Adventure Dog Medical Kit,   Amazon, $22.98 for a pack of 2

Frequently asked questions

  • The secret to having a worry-free travel experience is to pack in advance. First up, the essentials: passport, official ID, cash and any vital medications. Next, bring on board items that’ll help while away those hours, like your laptop or a few magazines. You’ll also want to pack your chargers, a neck pillow and a pair of earphones. Finally, don’t forget to toss in toiletries like a toothbrush, lip balm and a fresh set of clothes.
  • Make sure you don’t have a Swiss Army knife hiding in the bottom of your carry-on luggage. Other restricted items include explosive or flammable products, such as fuel and fireworks, and gels and liquids in containers with a volume of more than 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters).
  • The long, narrow aisles of your aircraft are not the best place for a fashion parade. Don comfortable layers and remember to take a sweater as it tends to get cool inside the cabin on long-haul flights. Flat, slightly roomy shoes are also a good choice.
  • Unfortunately, a risk of long flights is developing deep vein thrombosis (DVT), a blood clot condition caused by prolonged periods of inactivity. To prevent this, make the most of every opportunity to stretch your legs and walk around the cabin. Compression socks and tights are also a great idea to help minimize this risk.
  • First things first. Your ID and travel documents will need to be shown to security personnel. Keep them at hand so you don’t hold up the queue.
  • The X-ray machine comes next. Remove anything metal on you that is likely to beep. This includes things like earphones or headphones, as well as your coat or jacket. They’ll need to be placed on the conveyor belt for screening.
  • For just a few moments, you’ll have to unplug from the digital world. Your tablet, phone and any other electronics must also be sent through the scanner.
  • Can’t travel without your favorite hand and nail cream? As long as the volume is no greater than 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters) and it’s stored in a zip-lock bag, it’s OK to bring with you in your carry-on baggage.
  • There’s a good chance you’ll be required to take your shoes off to be X-rayed, so wearing lightweight sneakers is always a clever idea.
  • Knives and other sharp items can’t be taken on board. They’ll be confiscated at security, so pack them in your checked baggage.
