From time-honored ceremonies to crafting serene havens in our modern abodes, incense sticks have become the bridge between tradition and tranquility.  For thousands of years, these sacred treasures have woven themselves into the fabric of diverse cultures and religious rituals, offering solace and serenity. Delve deeper into the mystical world of incense sticks and allow their captivating essence to transform your surroundings and elevate your senses.

Natural Incense Sticks

Photo by  petr sidorov   The art of crafting incense sticks can be traced back to ancient times, with roots in China, India, and Egypt. Over the centuries, different societies perfected their techniques and compositions, leading to a wide variety of scents and uses today. Whether you're seeking a specific fragrance to aid in meditation or simply want to enhance the atmosphere around you, there's likely an incense stick that suits your needs. Check out our curated selection of natural incense here .

Key Takeaways

  • Incense sticks have a profound historical significance in various cultures and religions.
  • Numerous types and fragrances of incense sticks cater to different purposes and preferences.
  • Understanding incense's ingredients and benefits can enrich your experience and ensure safe usage.

History and Origin

The Egyptians skillfully blended a myriad of precious gifts from nature, such as resins, oils, and spices, to concoct exquisite incense offerings for worship and devotion. A tradition dating back to the revered era of the Old Kingdom , the wafting tendrils of incense held a profound significance, symbolizing purification and forging a celestial connection to the divine realms.

China has a long history of using incense sticks in religious and spiritual practices. The tradition originated during the Han Dynasty, where incense was used to measure time and as an offering in temples. Incense sticks in China were made from a mixture of herbs, spices, and other fragrant materials, reflecting the country's rich botanical resources. Timekeeping with incense sticks is well documented in The Trail of Time .

The use of incense sticks in ancient Greece was closely linked to religious ceremonies and rituals, as well as daily life. Greeks believed that the aromatic smoke from burning incense could serve as a bridge between the human and divine worlds. They often used frankincense and myrrh, two highly prized resins, in their incense mixtures. These fragrances were an important part of their religious traditions and are even mentioned in ancient texts .

Japan also has a longstanding tradition of using incense sticks, particularly in religious settings. The use of incense in Japan dates back to the 6th century when it was introduced from China via Korea. Over time, the Japanese developed their own unique styles and blends, with an emphasis on subtlety and refinement. In Japan, incense has often been used to purify sacred spaces, create an atmosphere for meditation, and even in traditional tea ceremonies.

Throughout history and across various cultures, incense sticks have played a vital role in religious ceremonies, spiritual practices, and daily life. Their unique aroma and the symbolism associated with them have transcended cultural boundaries and continue to be an important aspect of human spirituality.

Types of Incense

There are many forms of incense available for you to enjoy. In this section, we'll explore some of the most common types, including sticks, cones, coils, powders, and resins. Each type serves a unique purpose and can offer a different experience.

Sticks are perhaps the most popular form of incense. These long, slender sticks are usually made of a bamboo core coated with incense materials. To use them, simply light the end and let the smoldering produce an alluring aroma as it burns down the stick.

Cones are another popular option for incense lovers. As their name suggests, these incense products are shaped like small cones. They don't have a bamboo core like sticks, but they can still provide a pleasant fragrance when lit. To use, simply place the cone on a heat-resistant surface, light the tip, and enjoy the aroma as it burns from the top down.

Coil incense is an interesting alternative, featuring a spiral shape that can burn for a longer period compared to sticks or cones. These coils are often found in cultural or religious settings, where long-lasting fragrances are desired. To use a coil, suspend it from a holder and light the starting end, allowing the incense to burn slowly along the coil's length.

Powder incense is a versatile form that can be used for various applications, like burning on charcoal or mixing with other materials to create your incense blend. Typical ingredients include ground roots, barks, resins, and herbs. To use powder incense, sprinkle a small amount onto a lit charcoal disk placed on a heat-safe dish. The heat from the charcoal will release the fragrances in the powder.

Resin incense is derived from the sap of trees or plants and has been used for centuries for its intense aromas. Commonly found in solid forms, these natural substances can be burned on charcoal. To use resin incense, break off a small piece and place it on a lit charcoal disk. The heat will activate the fragrance, producing an intense and aromatic scent for you to enjoy.

With these different types of incense at your disposal, you'll have plenty of options to create a unique and enjoyable atmosphere in your home. Remember to always use incense safely, following the instructions for each type, and enjoy the world of fragrances that await you.

Ingredients and Composition

When it comes to incense sticks, there are a few common elements that give them their unique scent, burn time, and overall quality. In this section, we'll cover the primary ingredients typically used, which include natural essential oils, wood powder, gum arabic, and makko powder.

Natural Essential Oils

Natural essential oils play a crucial role in creating the distinct fragrances of incense sticks. These oils are derived from various plants, flowers, or even resins and create the rich and long-lasting scents. Common examples include sandalwood, frankincense, and myrrh. These essential oils not only provide pleasant aromas but also often carry significant religious and cultural importance in different traditions.

Wood Powder

Wood powder is an essential component of incense sticks as it serves as a combustible base material. It is often made from soft, fragrant woods such as sandalwood or agarwood. The wood powder helps bind the other ingredients, provides structure to the incense stick, and allows for steady, even burning.

Gum arabic is a natural resin derived from the Acacia tree and acts as a binder in incense stick composition. This ingredient helps hold the other materials together, ensuring a stable and even burn throughout the entire stick. As a natural adhesive, gum arabic also contributes to the overall quality and consistency of the final product.

Makko Powder

Makko powder, derived from the bark of the Tabu-no-ki tree, is another vital component in the production of incense sticks. It is a natural and odorless binder that enables the incense to burn evenly and consistently. Makko powder is also highly regarded for its water-absorbing properties, which help maintain the proper moisture levels in the incense mixture.

When you use or purchase incense sticks, it's important to know the key ingredients that contribute to their overall quality, fragrance, and burn time. By understanding the roles of natural essential oils, wood powder, gum arabic, and makko powder, you can better appreciate the craft behind these aromatic treasures.

Aromatherapy Incense Sticks with Essential Oils

Benefits of Essential Oil Incense Sticks

Aromatherapy.

Aromatherapy is a popular practice that uses essential oils to improve your physical, emotional, and mental well-being. Essential oil incense sticks can enhance this experience by providing a soothing and calming atmosphere. When you light an incense stick infused with essential oils, it releases fragrant smoke that fills the air, creating a relaxing ambiance. By surrounding yourself with these aromatic scents, you can experience various grounding benefits, such as reduced stress and anxiety, improved mood, and increased mental clarity.

Meditation is a wonderful practice that helps you calm your mind and connect with your inner self. Essential oil incense sticks can greatly complement your meditation sessions. The fragrant aroma from the incense sticks can aid in enhancing focus and concentration while you meditate, helping you dive deeper into your practice. Their soothing scents can also aid in creating a tranquil environment, allowing you to fully immerse yourself in the present moment and let go of any negative thoughts or energy as you. Additionally, using essential oil incense sticks during meditation can also serve as a point of focus, allowing you to anchor your attention to the present moment.

Incense Safety and Precautions

Asthma and respiratory health.

Indulging in the delightful aromas of burning incense sticks can create a serene atmosphere, promoting relaxation and tranquility. While it's essential to prioritize respiratory health, particularly for individuals with asthma or other respiratory conditions, there are ways to enjoy incense responsibly. By adopting a mindful approach and being cautious about usage, you can savor the soothing scents without compromising your well-being. It's advisable to limit the use of incense sticks to mitigate any potential discomfort and ensure a positive experience, especially for those with respiratory concerns.

Incense sticks often contain a mix of ingredients, including plant-based materials, resins, and aromatic oils. It's essential to use high-quality incense from reputable sources, as low-quality incense sticks may contain harmful substances. Inferior charcoal-based sticks, for instance, can release toxic compounds that can negatively impact your health.

Here are some tips to help you use incense sticks safely:

  • Make sure your incense burner is placed on a stable surface, away from flammable objects and materials.
  • Ventilate the room by opening windows or doors to allow fresh air to circulate, diluting any potential toxins released during the burning process.
  • Never leave burning incense unattended, and make sure you extinguish the sticks once you're done.
  • Keep incense away from children and pets to avoid accidents or ingestion.

By following these simple safety precautions, you can enjoy the relaxing atmosphere and pleasing scents of incense sticks without compromising your safety.

Purchasing Incense

When it comes to purchasing incense sticks, it's important to be mindful of a few key factors. In this section, we'll give you some friendly advice on shopping tips and provide you with some recommended sources for purchasing incense.

Shopping Tips

  • Quality matters : Look for incense made from natural ingredients, as this will likely produce a more pleasant fragrance and burn more cleanly.
  • Gift-giving : Incense sticks can make unique gift ideas, particularly for those who enjoy aromatherapy or are passionate about creating a calming atmosphere at home. Consider personalized scent preferences and incense styles for that perfect gesture.
  • Check compatibility : Ensure your incense holder can accommodate the type of incense you're purchasing, as some holders may only fit certain sticks or cones.

Happy incense shopping!

Accessories and Storage

Incense burner.

When it comes to enhancing the fragrance experience, an incense burner is essential. The right burner not only helps to release the aromatic materials from your incense but also adds an aesthetic appeal to your space. Choose a burner that matches your personal style and complements your incense sticks' aroma.

  • Burn time: Keep in mind the burn time of your incense sticks when selecting a burner. Ensure that it can hold the stick securely and catch any ash that may fall while burning.

Incense Holder

Another important accessory for incense lovers is an incense holder. This not only serves a practical purpose (holding the stick while burning) but can also be a beautiful addition to your home decor. Some holders also include storage compartments for unburned sticks, ensuring that your collection stays organized and readily available.

Books and Resources

If you're looking to expand your knowledge about incense, its history, and different ceremonies, consider investing in some books and resources. There are plenty of guides, recipe books, and articles available that delve deeper into the world of incense sticks, encompassing various topics such as:

  • Different types of ingredients, including flowers, musk, and resins
  • Traditional and modern incense-making techniques
  • The role of incense in cultural and spiritual ceremonies
  • Suggestions for appropriate essential oils and pairings

By exploring these resources and learning more about incense, you'll be able to better appreciate the rich history and various uses of aromatic materials in different parts of the world. So get ready to enhance your fragrance collection and create a calming and enjoyable atmosphere for yourself and your loved ones.

Flow with Aroma: A Beginner's Guide to Backflow Incense

Backflow incense is a type of incense that creates a smoke effect that flows downward, rather than rising up. This creates a unique and visually appealing scent experience. If you're new to backflow incense, here are some tips on how to use it.

Choose the right incense burner: To enjoy backflow incense, you'll need a special type of incense burner that is designed to accommodate the downward flow of smoke. These burners typically have a small hole in the center to hold the incense cone, and a downward-sloping channel to allow the smoke to flow down.

Light the incense: To light the incense, hold a lighter or match to the tip of the incense cone until it starts to smolder. Then, place the lit incense cone into the well in the center of the burner.

Adjust the airflow: To ensure that the smoke flows downward, it's important to adjust the airflow in the room. Close windows and doors to minimize air movement, and try to avoid placing the incense burner near a fan or other source of air movement.

Enjoy the scent: As the incense burns, you'll see the smoke flowing downward, creating a mesmerizing visual effect. The scent will fill the room, creating a relaxing and calming atmosphere.

Extinguish the incense: When you're done using the backflow incense, blow out the flame to extinguish it. You can also gently blow on the incense to help put out the fire.

By following these steps, you'll be able to enjoy the unique experience of backflow incense. Whether you're using it for meditation, relaxation, or just for the visual appeal, backflow incense is a great way to add some extra ambiance to your space.

What is the aromatic family?

Like the smell of a bouquet of herbs and aromatics. We find fresh eaux de parfums, with notes of lavender, eucalyptus and aromatics inspired by gastronomy.

What does incense smell like?

This ancestral resin has a powerful smell with camphor and pepper facets. In 702, it accompanies the aromatic notes of the departure. Incense reminds us of church benches but also Buddhist temples. Indeed, it is used in a number of worship which gives it a mysterious side.

What does lavender smell like?

Emblematic flower of Provence, lavender smells good in summer! Its floral scent perfumes our homes and closets. In the 702, it brings a gentle aromatic facet that combines perfectly with the powerful notes of incense.

What does cashmere wood smell like?

Cashmere wood is an imaginative wood, with an amber, woody and slightly musky scent. In 702, its particular velvety scent gives the trail of the perfume and envelops us with its floral softness.

YOUR FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How do you manage to offer more affordable niche fragrances.

The answer is simple: less margin and products made with local suppliers. Everything is in the ingredients, the creation and the bottle! Local manufacturing allows us to minimize transportation costs while fully valuing French know-how. We thus set up a virtuous circuit between the perfumer and the friends of the House.

Do your perfumes last long on the skin?

Yes, we have chosen to offer all our creations in Eau de Parfum, which is more concentrated than Eau de Toilette. When talking about the lastingness of a perfume, we must also take into account the skin's pH level. A perfume will last in a different way from one person to another.

To know more about the different concentrations, read our perfume guide.

Do your perfumes contain synthetic ingredients?

Our fragrances have been developed to contain between 82% and 99% ingredients of natural origin. They have been carefully selected to meet the strictest health and safety standards. Our perfumers always look for the best natural ingredients, as long as these raw materials are non-allergenic and the extraction of their essence respects our planet and is possible.

Our perfumes are therefore clean and sustainable. If you want to know more about our clean fragrances, discover our commitments.

What is a top note, a heart note, a base note?

Perfumes are designed according to an olfactory pyramid:

- Top notes: These are the first scents you smell when you spray a perfume. They are often quite fresh and evaporate quite quickly on your skin (a few minutes).

- Heart notes: They appear as the head evaporates. They will stay with you for a few hours.

- The base notes: This is the scent that you smell at the end of the day and that is absorbed by your clothes. It includes less volatile raw materials such as woods. Want to know more? Find our guide to know everything about the different types of notes .

What is the best way to apply perfume?

Do your perfumes contain alcohol?

Yes, our perfumes contain alcohol, water and fragrance ingredients. Dye-free, preservative-free.

An Incense for Every Occasion

These sticks, cones, coils and papers can help you clear your head, define a space and even rediscover a sense of time.

By Arden Fanning Andrews

The American acid-rock band the Strawberry Alarm Clock’s 1967 song “ Incense and Peppermints ” inevitably recalls the pervasiveness of scents like patchouli during the hippie era. “Occasions, persuasions clutter your mind / Incense and peppermints, the color of time,” the lead singer croons. But lyrics like these — co-written by John S. Carter and Tim Gilbert — also nod, if only accidentally, to the widespread use of incense in our own helter-skelter age.

In fact, as Ligaya Mishan writes in an essay for T’s fall Men’s issue , fragrant powders and resins have been used around the world for millenniums for both medicinal and mystical purposes. And though the notion that scents have the power to heal has been largely dispelled, incense’s ability to set the mood — whether of a person or a room — is as prized as ever. “It can totally define a space, so it is architecture, in our definition,” says Sarah Swartz Wessel, who co-founded the Phoenix-based multidisciplinary design firm Tennen with her husband, Ethan Wessel, 20 years ago, and who works closely with a small company in Kyoto to create the brand’s incenses, a number of which are meant to evoke a Japanese dry garden. For her, there’s “a different scent and shape for all kinds of occasions.” A short stick might be lit for a morning shower, a spiral can smolder in a corner before party guests arrive and a long stick is good for ushering in bedtime.

During the pandemic, in particular, when weeks and months often seem to blur together, the burning ritual “can really be transformative, and a marker of time,” says Alex Elle , a Maryland-based author and wellness facilitator who uses incense, frequently palo santo blends from the Tucson, Ariz.-based online store Rituals Incense , while writing and during moving meditation. “Burning incense is, dare I say it, a spiritual practice,” she adds. “By the time it burns out, it’s a new beginning.” Here, a rundown of some of the best blends on the market, in case you’re looking to start a practice of your own.

Breu resin, extracted from the Almacega tree in the Amazon rainforest and sometimes referred to as Brazilian frankincense, has been burned for centuries in South America to treat headaches and respiratory ailments, balance the sixth (intuition) chakra and ease anxiety. It’s a specialty of the Brooklyn-based brand Incausa , whose Brazilian-born owners, Carolina Vieira and Vinicius Vieira de Vieira, source ready-made breu incenses made from certified Brazilian and Peruvian harvesters. Its palo santo-scented wands ($16 for six) emit an earthy, woodsy aroma when lit.

“I thought it was the scent of the forest itself,” the designer Francisco Costa says of the first time he smelled breu — in 2016 while visiting the Yaminawá tribe in Acre, Brazil, where he attended cleansing rituals in which chunks of the oxidized resin were thrown into bonfires. “When I spoke with the chief of the tribe, he told me more about the spirituality of the ingredient,” Costa says. Now, it’s the core of his Costa Brazil product line of cold-pressed oils and mineral bath salts — even its Vela Jungle candle features the resin, which has been studied for its inflammation-reducing triterpenes. The brand’s Resina de Breu rock ($145), though, which is sustainably harvested by Acre locals, doesn’t behave like traditional incense. “Sometimes it ignites, sometimes it bursts, sometimes it doesn’t light at all,” says Costa, who recommends giving it a go either at the beginning or end of the day, when you can really focus. “Nature provided something that’s so special, and you have to make the time and engage with it.”

Japanese-Made Blends

“You can’t replace the hundreds of years of history,” says Swartz Wessel of sourcing Tennen’s incenses directly from Japanese makers in Kyoto. When it comes to the brand’s Sonoran Desert series, the best sellers are the Spring Arroyo spirals ($38 for 10), which have a base of sandalwood and Japanese bay tree layered with essences of lily of the valley and freesia. “It’s a complex scent that changes as it burns,” Swartz Wessel says.

The Parisian fragrance house Astier de Villatte’s Yakushima sticks ($51) are created on the island of Awaji, where notes of black tea and tobacco are kneaded into a paste of resin, herbs and wood reminiscent of Yakushima’s lush rainforest. Alternatively, Kogado’s Sandalwood Incense ($20) relies on a single ingredient, with each stick releasing half an hour’s worth of pure sandalwood smoke that, given that the aroma is believed to be a natural sedative, makes it the perfect nightcap. And then there’s Bodha’s Smokeless Incense ($35), which is made using traditional methods by the Tokyo-based Nippon Kodo (a company that traces its origins back over 400 years, to Koju, an incense maker to the emperor) and has a novel style of release: Once a stick has been lit and the flame extinguished, a campfire-type aroma mingles with notes of petitgrain and violet leaf — no billowing plume in sight.

Purifying Papers

Established in Florence, Italy, 800 years ago, and one of the oldest pharmacies in the world, Santa Maria Novella celebrates an Armenian custom with its Carta d’Armenia burning papers ($28). Once lit, the strips, which are “soaked in a mixture of resins and spices” and meant to be folded like an accordion, last for just a few minutes, says Robert Gerstner, who carries them in his and Karl Bradl’s Manhattan shop, Aedes Perfumery. They burn without a flame, Gerstner explains, for a “classic, heavy incense smell, purifying the air.”

The fair-trade hand-rolled rope incense ($28) that Catherine Rising purchases from Nepal and sells online from Rochester, N.Y., is also paper-based. She notes that no artificial fragrances are used to make it, and that the bundles are packaged in fabric sourced from a nonprofit shop that carries donated sewing supplies. Strands scented with Himalayan cedar can be dangled from a hook so that they look like a twisted chrysalis and lit from below — cedar is thought to be grounding, so consider setting one of these aflame after a long day spent in cyberspace. Elle is a fan of the Ha Ko paper incense leaves ($37) from Kunjudo, a company founded in 1893 on Awaji. “I love how the smoke rises and moves,” she says. Made from washi paper and shaped like the foliage of trees — including persimmon, with scents of white floral or smokey cinnamon, and zelkova, with scents of agarwood, spicy jasmine or green grass — they can either be lit and placed on a fireproof felt mat, or kept intact and treated as potpourri.

American Spirit

The incense cones from the Seattle-based fragrance design house Blackbird arrive in a cylindrical tin that, once the top is unscrewed, can double as a portable holder. “I thought that was really clever,” says Swartz Wessel, who discovered the line on a trip to the Pacific Northwest. “They feel very American,” she says of the brand’s robust scents such as Death ($35), which has notes of sage, marble and leather, and was created in collaboration with Cold Cave, the Los Angeles-based dark-wave band.

Another one of Elle’s favorite places to find incense stateside is the clothing and fragrance boutique Na Nin in Richmond, Va. She recommends the Sea Salt & Sand Dunes cones ($22) from its house line, which evoke the whiff one gets after walking past a body shop in a mall before they’re lit, and smell faintly beachy while burning. Elle likes to light one on a bed of white sifted ash set inside a soapstone holder (the ash protects the vessel). Being in the presence of beautiful objects, she says, “makes the ritual so much more enjoyable.” For that reason, she’s also drawn to the brass and precious stone burners and hour-themed incenses, including the 2AM blend ($30), which come in a corked glass vial, from Cinnamon Projects. The sticks are made in New York with powders and oils of honey, vetiver, cedar and, of course, cinnamon, the scent of which is said to improve memory — and enhance attention span.

Explore the Ruins of an Ancient Incense Route

Follow frankincense and myrrh on a historic journey through the desert

Frankincense and myrrh may not make the cut on many shopping lists today, but from the 3rd century BCE to the 2nd century AD , they were hot commodities. Procured from tree sap, they were long used as incense and perfume, burned frequently in many places around the world to cover up the not-so-pleasant smells of the time. But there was one problem: frankincense and myrrh were only native to trees growing in Ethiopia, Somalia, and southern Arabia.

Enter the incense route, a path spanning more than 1,200 miles and used by traders to carry frankincense and myrrh from Yemen and Oman, through the Negev desert, to the Mediterranean port in Gaza. The route took about 62 days to traverse, according to the notable Roman author Pliny the Elder , with around 65 stops along the way where traders and their camel caravans could rest, recharge and sell their goods. Generally, a day’s worth of travel would bring the caravans to the next stop.

A local population called the Nabateans primarily controlled this route, operating four major cities along the way—Haluza, Mamshit, Avdat and Shivta—as well as multiple fortresses protecting the route from robbers.

At the height of its use, the incense route aided in the transport of an estimated 3,000 tons of incense every year, following an undulating path that changed slightly with each instance that settlements along the way decided to increase taxes on passing caravans. Although some spices were also carried along the incense route, this shouldn’t be confused with the actual spice routes, which were largely maritime paths.

And like those before them, the overland incense route transitioned to a maritime route, as well, beginning around the last century BCE. Traders in southern Arabia would make  inflatable rafts out of animal skin, using those to secretly float bundles of incense out to waiting ships on the Arabian Sea. From there, the boats would covertly sail up the Red Sea and deliver the incense to Egyptian ports. In approximately 25 BCE, the south Arabian kingdoms were ultimately overthrown, bringing an end to the overland route (which was mostly controlled by Arabians ) altogether, and allowing the maritime trade to flourish.

Follow the scent to these spots in modern-day Israel, where you can see what’s left of the ancient incense route today.

This town, also commonly known by its variations including Abdah, Ovdat and Obodat, was one of the most important cities on the incense route. At first, it was a simple  fortified station meant to protect cargo from thieves and provide water, food, and shelter to those along the route; but at some point in the 3rd century BCE, the Nabateans developed it into a city in its own right. A destructive earthquake in the 7th century AD caused residents to abandon Avdat, but relics still remain. Visitors to what is now a  UNESCO Heritage site can see ruins of a thriving metropolis—including the fortress, churches, a ceramics workshop, homes, water systems and burial caves.

haluza

Haluza (sometimes referred to as Halutza, Elousa or Elusa) was the second-to-last stop on the ancient incense route, situated just before the caravans would hit their final stop at the port in Gaza. The town is also the northernmost in the Negev desert, and was known to be the administrative center for this region of the incense route. Later in the city’s history, it became a stop for Christian pilgrims on the way to Jerusalem. The majority of Haluza rests beneath massive sand dunes, and it was never fully excavated —yet the ruins of both a theater and a church remain on this site today.

Another of the main cities along the incense route, Mamshit has extensive ruins of churches, as well as an inn, a bathhouse, various general buildings and a water system. Like many other stops along the incense route, Mamshit was valuable not only for its location, but also as a result of its agricultural focus. This city brought in wealth another way, too—horses. Residents of Mamshit bred Arabian horses , which made the city a rich center of commerce until its ultimate desertion in the 6th century.

Unique to desert cities along the incense route, Shivta did not have fortifications . A wall around the city was constructed out of houses instead, though there was nothing at the time to stop passerby from just walking in. Shivta had two large public pools for collecting rainwater, and the responsibility of keeping them clean shifted on a monthly basis, from family to family among those living in the city. Ruins of the town are impressive and largely intact today; you can still walk down a road lined with homes and experience how it may have looked to residents back then.

Nekarot Fort

nekarot

This fortress was built to provide protection for the section of the incense route spanning Moa to Ramon Crater. Visitors here can still see a guard tower with three rooms, a watchtower and a central courtyard, along with several other buildings; but here, you'll also have the chance to behold an even more unique spot: a hidden water pool complex tucked into a riverbed. The water building was designed to catch floodwaters rushing into a sunken pool, and any overflow was diverted around and away from Nekarot to irrigate the nearby fields.

Khan Saharonim Caravanserai

saharonim

Rest stops like this one dotted the length of the incense route: an old caravan stop , where each group could relax, spend the night, or simply acquire supplies and water before setting out on their way. Most of the caravanserais along the journey were known to have been fortified and generally had inn rooms, a kitchen, baths and storage rooms. Khan Saharonim’s site was believed to have been a little more than  300 feet away from a water source, making it an ideal location for a pit stop along the route, though water no longer flows there today.

A Guide to Incense Around the World, from Japan to France

By Ashlea Halpern

Image may contain Wood Furniture Hardwood Table and Fire

Incense has been used in worship for thousands of years, and it has been a part of my own routine for as long as I can remember. Growing up, my New Age-y mother burned it whenever she performed a Wiccan ritual. In college, I collected neon-hued cones with head shop names like Strawberry Fields and Hawaiian Haze. An earthy-sweet sandalwood hit of Nag Champa will forever remind me of yoga studios and secondhand bookstores . But it wasn’t until I started working as a travel journalist that I really ramped up my exploration of incense, marveling at the smoking coils hung from the ceiling of a Taiwanese temple or the plumes of oud wafting from a censer in a Moroccan teahouse.

During the pandemic, few purchases have brought me as much pleasure as incense. Comfort-wise, it ranks up there with scented candles and felted wool slip-ons . There’s also something meaningful in the act of lighting up: For me, it marks the transition from day to night, creating separation when remote work has made it difficult to draw boundaries between our jobs and our personal lives.

If you’re new to incense, you’ll want to purchase a cool holder before getting started. I recommend the groovy ceramic holders from Brooklyn potter Leena Muley for burning sticks and this minimalist ceramic plate from Montreal’s Maison Stoi for lighting paper incense or bars of palo santo.

Read on for a global tour of some of my favorite varieties of incense, from Arabian bakhoor to Peruvian palo santo.

Paper incense from Japan

Burning my first stick of Japanese incense was a revelation: The scent was so subtle compared to the nose hair-singeing sticks of my dormitory days. I haven’t visited Japan in a couple of years, but every time I burn Nippon Kodo’s Aloeswood incense or a Wandering Moss coil from Tennen , it transports me to another time and place. There is even a Japanese word for the art of appreciating incense: kōdō . The Ha Ko paper incense from Kaorujudo, a 126-year-old incense maker on Awaji Island, is the ultimate indulgence. They are beyond beautiful, their fragile shapes and delicate ribbing inspired by the leaves of native plants. The serene fragrances change seasonally: The new summer series includes a bamboo leaf aromatized with moss and an old oak leaf with a hint of mint.

Palo santo from Peru

The cleansing palo santo blends from Espiritus del Ande are handcrafted according to Quechua traditions on a cooperative farm outside Cusco . My favorite variety is laced with Mediterranean rosemary and the indigenous wiraqoya shrub, grown in the high Andes and traditionally burned by shamans. Setting a bar aflame is said to improve memory, aid in concentration and digestion, and bring good fortune to anyone who inhales its heavenly cologne.

Incense papers from France

Astier de Villatte may produce the most luxurious incense sticks in France, but I’ve fallen hard for its commoner cousin: old-world paper incense from Papier d’Arménie Paris, founded in 1885. Each booklet contains 36 perforated strips, which are torn out, folded like an accordion, and burned in a perforated ceramic dish designed to diffuse the scent. The paper turns to ash in less than five minutes but the perfume lingers in a room for hours, filling the air with elegant notes of myrrh and vanilla.

Eucalyptus and Acacia incense from Australia

Nothing emulates a sun-baked hike through the Australian bush like firing up organic incense from Addition Studio in Byron Bay . This giftable set from the decade-old furniture and lighting design studio includes a minimalist brass burner and ash catcher plus 15 handmade sticks of woodsy, pepperminty incense scented with tea tree or eucalyptus and acacia.

Cedar rope from Nepal

Rope incense has been used in meditation for centuries in Tibet and Nepal . The fragrance is extracted from dhup, a type of cedar wood found in the Himalayan mountains. The gum is powdered and rolled into lokta paper, and then hand-twisted macramé-style into mini ropes. Each bundle includes 50 four-inch strands, which can be hung from a burner hook or lit flat on a bed of sand. The rope has a soft, calming, piney scent—as close as one can get to forest bathing without leaving the house.

Copal from Mexico

The burning of hardened aromatic sap or “blood” from the Bursera tree is sacred in Mesoamerican cultures and linked to divine healing and Mayan and Aztec ancestral worship. I first smelled that citrusy smoke floating above family altars at a Día de los Muertos celebration in San Miguel de Allende; now it’s in regular rotation in my home. The white resin incense sticks from Temple Copal are wild harvested and handcrafted by indigenous artisans. A bundle includes 10 sticks, each burning at least 90 minutes. Because the scent is so powerful, a single stick can be stretched for several days.

Bakhoor from the United Arab Emirates

Commonly burned at Arabian weddings, bakhoor is also used to purify one’s house—particularly when guests are coming over. The perfume comes in many forms, including colorful pastilles, scented bricks, and wood chips soaked in essential oils. When the incense is heated over charcoal in a traditional mabkhara or electric burner, it produces a thick gray smoke. These luxurious discs, made by a half-century-old company in Dubai , are laced with threads of precious saffron, with top notes of oud and musk, and a whisper of warm vanilla and rose.

Holy Smoke incense from Indonesia

ZenBunni’s squat, hand-rolled natural incense is made in small batches with ingredients sustainably grown by Indonesian farmers. Each “magical wand,” as the California-based spiritualists who launched the line call it, is a proprietary blend of native flowers, roots, barks, nuts, and spices—with no synthetic binders or icky ingredients to worry over. A box contains 13 sticks, buying you half an hour of intoxicatingly herbaceous bliss with every light.

Trappist incense from the Ozarks

Anyone who has spent time inside a Catholic church has probably caught a whiff of liturgical incense puffing from a swinging censer . This slow-burning Trappist incense is hand-blended by the monks of Assumption Abbey and nuns of Nazareth Hermitage in Ava, Missouri. The Cistercians’ best seller is the subtly floral Melleray, made with frankincense imported from Ethiopia and India. Shoppers also rave about the spicier Abbatial, which blends three types of frankincense with myrrh, rose, and cedar.
