Catherine Cohen at the Cross Keys Covent Garden

We went for a pint with Catherine Cohen

New York City’s finest young comedian has touched down in London town

Rosie Hewitson

Catherine Cohen loves a photoshoot. New York City’s favourite ‘one-woman cabaret chanteuse’ is extremely jet-lagged when she turns up at Time Out’s office less than 24 hours after landing in the city ahead of her first UK tour.

Barely ten minutes later, she’s got a conspiratorial glint in her eye and a fake Martini in hand as she reclines on the leather banquettes of our local old-man boozer – shout out The Cross Keys in Covent Garden – looking for all the world like she’s just taken huge pleasure in telling an over-refreshed patron to sling their hook.

This impressively gung-ho approach to self-promotion is pretty much exactly what you’d expect if you’ve watched Cohen’s 2022 Netflix special ‘The Twist?… She’s Gorgeous’, a recording of her monthly show at NYC cabaret venue Joe’s Pub that begins with a jazz-hands-heavy musical number called ‘Look at Me’.

It also comes in quite handy when you’ve got a brand-new show to promote. After we’ve finished alarming the pub regulars, we head back to the Time Out photo studio to chat about it.

Catherine Cohen in the Time Out Studio

Hey, Catherine, welcome back to London. Let’s start with a quickfire round of London v New York.

‘Ugh, impossible! Impossible to choose!’

And yet… subway or tube?

‘The tube is better.’

Salt-beef bagel or pie and mash?

‘What’s a salt-beef bagel?’

Is that not a really New York thing?

‘I guess it would be more like bagel and lox.’

‘It’s okay, we can help each other. And I don’t know about pie, but I’ve had, like, bangers and mash. It’s good.’

Brooklyn or Hackney?

‘I have to say Brooklyn.’

Whereabouts do you think you would live if you lived here?

‘I love Islington. That’s kind of posh, isn’t it? That’d be cute.’

Broadway or the West End?

‘Broadway! I mean, come on. It’s Broadway , baby.’

Catherine Cohen at the Cross Keys, Covent Garden

What about London audiences and New York ones? Have you noticed any differences?

‘Not really, they’re both game, both open-minded. I do feel like English crowds appreciate live performance more and maybe they’re more attentive. The main difference is that you guys don’t have Chipotle. There’s this part in the show where I’d go through a beautiful monologue about what Chipotle means to me, and that didn’t really land in Edinburgh. Do you know?’

About Chipotle? Yeah, I think we have six or seven in London.

‘Oh good.’

I do feel like English crowds appreciate live performance more and maybe they’re more attentive

Have you spent much time in London other than touring?

‘My family actually moved here for a year when I was three or four for my dad’s work, so a part of me has always wanted to come back. There’s probably an alternate reality where we never left and I became like this cute little British schoolgirl, but instead I moved to Texas and became a weird, self-hating, chubby, Christian, musical-theatre nerd. And then when I was in my sophomore year of college I did a summer programme at LAMDA. Can you tell?’

Definitely. What do you think would have happened to you if you had stayed?

‘I’d be posh!’

Any rising comics on the London scene that you’d recommend checking out?

‘I love Sikisa. She opened for me at the Clapham Grand last time I was there, and she’s on tour with me again this time. I love Celya AB, Leo Reich, Ania Magliano, Laura Ricote. They’re all great.’

And do you have any favourite spots that you like to visit when you’re here?

‘For comedy, I love The Bill Murray pub. I’ve played Moth Club a few times, which I loved. And when I was here last summer, we went to the Sessions Arts Club, which was so stunning, I’m going back there tonight. But honestly, I’m just a sucker for any kind of authentic pub. I’m a tourist!’

Catherine Cohen at the Cross Keys, Covent Garden

So you’ve been working on your new show for a whole year now.

‘Yeah, I did the first work in progress about this time last year, then I continued working on it in Edinburgh, and then I finally smacked the title on it, did a couple of runs in New York this past month to get ready, and this is my first time touring it.’

How is it different from your previous show?

‘I think it's a little more actually personal instead of just oversharing. If the first show was all like, “I'm sleeping around with these random guys.” This one is more like, “I fear that I will never be truly loved.” It’s more about things that I’m actually feeling vulnerable about.’

And if you had to describe it in three words?

‘Let me think… “Intimate”… “Disgusting”… and “beautiful”. Who wouldn’t want that?’

The UK tour of Catherine Cohen: ‘ Come for Me’ is happening now.

Catherine also performs at ‘Christopher Bliss and Friends: Valentine’s Special’ at The Moth Club on Thu Feb 16.  The top London comedy shows to see in February .

Comedian Catherine Cohen’s UK tour Come for me showcases at the Hackney Empire February 2023

New York sensation and rising comedian Catherine Cohen will be embarking on her first UK tour Come for me in February 2023, a raunchy portrayal of what it means to enter your 30s as a woman.

Cohen, a self-confessed millennial, explores life as a woman online, in love and going through an eggsistential crisis at the prospect of freezing her eggs.

The show will be coming to London Hackney Empire for a Matinee (6.30pm) and evening (9.45pm) performance on February 3 and promises to bring sexy-stand-up comedy and entertaining songs about finding your purpose and laughing through attempts to fill the void.

Shows such as Fleabag have bought about a new wave of comedy with a side of realism which makes light of and subtly brings to the fore women’s issues. Ms Cohen’s humour does just this.

In 2019, she received the Dave’s Edinburgh Comedy Award for Best Newcomer’ for her live show of The Twist… She’s Gorgeous at the Fringe Festival and since then she has released her book of comic poetry God I feel Modern Tonight and will soon feature in Paramount’s feature film At Midnight .

Catherine Cohen.

Comedian Catherine Cohen: ‘Look, I find myself quite annoying, too’

The US comedy sensation is making up for lost time after Covid with a new show – still self-obsessed, but ‘a bit darker’ – and an opportunity for us to observe a quintessentially millennial comic grow up in public

A s long as there has been standup, comics have had to decide how to be themselves on stage. But now, a generation has emerged who – thanks to social media – have been performing in public, even while establishing their actual identities, since adolescence. The fallout from that process is spawning much of today’s best comedy, Catherine Cohen’s very much included. Cohen’s maiden set The Twist …? She’s Gorgeous was the standout show of 2019 , on which she was all set to capitalise when the global pandemic struck. Now she is back, with a show that should reveal what the self-obsessed comedy of an Insta-addled twentysomething looks like when its creator inches into their 30s.

The answer – spoiler alert! – is that Cohen, now 31, still has “the same bravado and obsession with myself and with glamour at all costs”. Such are the qualities she brought three summers ago from New York City, where she was known for her weekly cabaret slot at Alan Cumming ’s Manhattan nightclub, to the Edinburgh fringe – from which she sashayed off with a slam-dunk best newcomer prize. I met her at the time, and in conversation she was playful and highly self-aware, invisible air quotes lingering around her every utterance. Great fun, in other words – if not as much fun as that debut show, The Twist …, a performance with so much star power it left scorch marks.

It found the Houston, Texas native dolled up in sequins, accompanied on piano by musical comedian Henry Koperski, performing a suite of songs about sex, body image, and the tensions between carefully curated confidence and the ravening neurosis beneath. With its signature track Look at Me, a phrase repeated ad absurdum throughout, the show was catchy, silly, hyper self-involved, and shockingly oversharey. Throughout, Cohen’s Dorothy Parker meets Kim Kardashian sensibility served up joke (“I love sex because it famously has no consequences”) after joke (“I famously love porn if my boyfriend tells me the girl looks like me. But otherwise it is Bad! For! Women!”).

What is exciting about the performance, and about much of the comedy of Cohen’s kindred spirits ( Bo Burnham , Kate Berlant , the young Londoner Leo Reich ), is that it’s both satire and cry for help. So is Cohen depicting her “real” self on stage or a monstrous parody? “I don’t really think of it as a persona,” says Cohen, Zooming from Los Angeles, a little more grounded than when we first met. “It’s just me, amplified. I mean, there’s definitely a difference [between her real-world and stage selves]. But everything I say on stage is true. It just might be true things that I wouldn’t say in polite conversation.”

You can watch Cohen’s work for therapy: “My favourite thing,” she says, “is to make someone in the audience feel less crazy for feeling all their feelings.” Or you can recoil from the untamed id on display. “Look, I find myself quite annoying, too,” says Cohen. “I don’t want to be myself all the time. So I hear that criticism.”

Cohen in The Twist…? She’s Gorgeous.

All of which makes it rather alarming when Cohen describes her new show, Come for Me, as “a bit darker” than its predecessor. Really?! The Twist … was surely dark enough? “I guess it was. But when I look back, I’m like: child’s play!”

The Covid pandemic scotched Cohen’s onward plans for that first show, diverting her sky-rocketing career trajectory. Not that she was idle under lockdown: she hosted a weekly show on Instagram Live; she released a book of poetry (sample lyric: “We’re out of toilet paper and I just ordered / A bejeweled headband online / It’s coming Friday is it sexy / How much I hate being alone?”); she co-hosted, and still does, the hit podcast Seek Treatment (about “boys, sex, dating and love”) with Pat Regan, standup and writer on the hit comedy Hacks. Cohen was also embroiled in controversy in 2020 when a five-year-old sketch was excavated in which, to make a satirical point about performative woke activism, she held a rope around the neck of her friend, the Black performer Chris Murphy. Nuance was lost in the Twitterstorm. Her self-abasing apology duly followed.

It was not until March of this year that The Twist … made it to Netflix , the upstream to which all modern standups hope to swim. “I was terrified having to perform it,” says Cohen, “after two years of not performing at all. But on the day I was like: ‘Let’s fucking do this!’ I could not have been more ready. The taping was the best day of my life.” Its delay, though, meant that a set Cohen describes as “very of my 20s” was recorded for posterity in her 30s, its jokes and psycho-social commentary a few years past peak currency.

“You’re left wanting,” wrote one observer, “the show put on by this Cat Cohen, this more recent one.” Which is lucky – because Cohen was by then developing her follow-up, which tours the UK from February having previewed at the Edinburgh fringe. Finally, she says, her time in Covid limbo is over. She’s currently filming her biggest TV role yet, an adaptation of TV writer Kristin Newman’s memoir What I Was Doing While You Were Breeding . “It’s so cheesy, but I do feel so much more grateful now,” she says. “Every show I get to do, every shoot I’m on, I’m like: I cannot believe this is my life.”

after newsletter promotion

Edinburgh 2022 in particular felt like a turning point. “I was just in a room, no masks, having fun, feeling like my old self again. But with no fear of death and a larger understanding of,” – cue kitschy voice – “the frailty of life. All of a sudden I was like: ‘Oh this is what I’ve been waiting for!’ This sense of community and excitement and feeling busy and full of life.”

In stark contrast, Come for Me documents the fraught side of being Catherine Cohen . “It’s dealing with existential dread,” she says. “Being a real adult. The idea of settling down, marriage and motherhood – and how terrified of that I am.” In real life? “Yeah. Sometimes it feels nice and sometimes I feel angry that I’m expected to do any of that.” By whom? “By society. And by myself; all the things I’ve been instilled with. I froze my eggs, so I talk about that in the show.”

With audiences after the curtain falls, says Cohen, she’s having “intense conversations about, like, the demands of being a woman in the world and saying goodbye to [your youth]. Your 30s is still young,” she admits, “but it’s different from your 20s, when you can fuck up again and again and you’re just doing your thing. Now it’s like: ‘Oh, there’s consequences’.”

One consequence may be that no-holds-barred comedy is a trickier thing to pull off. Cohen is in a long-term relationship now, with the actor Brian Muller. “There’s a love song in the show,” she says. “It’s about what happens when you are happy and still feel like you need more”. Such circumstances aren’t always conducive to public oversharing.

“Contrary to popular belief,” says Cohen, “I’m not a complete monster. Sometimes I’ll check with my boyfriend: ‘Is it OK if I talk about this?’ And thankfully he knows what he’s signed up for. Everything in the first show felt safely in the past when I was writing about it. Whereas now there are things that are happening in real time – and not just boyfriend things – and I’m like: this isn’t really funny yet, is it?”

None of which means that Cohen, the ne plus ultra of millennial angst and ego, is mellowing with age, although she will admit to having written one song for the new show that “veers earnest”. Cohen’s pre-Covid self would have cringed at the thought. “I think you’re right,” says Cohen, a rueful smile at the thought. “I know. Growth? How cliche!” She rolls her eyes. “I’m a walking cliche.”

Comedian Catherine Cohen Escaped Death — Now She’s Everywhere

By Kase Wickman

Kase Wickman

Catherine Cohen in New York, December 2023.

Comedian Catherine Cohen had a hole in her heart, and there was only one thing that could mend it: a visit from Dr. Love.

Actually, any number of cardiologists probably could have helped, but it was Dr. Love at Mount Sinai on the Upper East Side who came to Cohen’s aid when she suffered a mini stroke last summer, which led to the discovery that she’d had a hole in her heart since birth, a condition called PFO. That her doctor’s name sounds like it belongs in a made-for-TV movie about a charming comedian stumbling through life in New York City, right into the arms of a handsome cardiologist? That’s par for the course in Cohen’s life, one of the things that she singsong-ingly characterizes as a “lady in a mooooovie ” moment in her stand-up act.

And it came on the heels of her Netflix special, The Twist … ? She’s Gorgeous, which was released in 2022 — an hour of Cohen gasping and squealing and singing from the stage of Joe’s Pub in Manhattan, whirling around in a hot-pink romper absolutely duh-ripp-ing with rhinestones. Netflix touts her special as “a sparkling cocktail of stand-up and song,” in Cohen’s recollection, “which I thought was really actually well said. Shout-out. I think one of the things is like, ‘quirky,’ and what’s quirky about it? Being a size 12? Is that quirky? What do you mean? Woman screaming, is that quirky?”

If she could have a stab at those descriptors, she might add “screaming in sequins. New York. Loud. Sad. Gross — but beautiful!”

Editor’s picks

The 250 greatest guitarists of all time, the 500 greatest albums of all time, the 50 worst decisions in movie history, every awful thing trump has promised to do in a second term.

Now, things are back on track. This year, Cohen embarks on a tour that has her shuffling from city to city through May. She hopes to make up for that missed festival in Edinburgh and maybe chip away at a proposal for a book of comedic essays. She has her sights set on a new special. It seems like the demand she’s been making for years in one of her signature songs, “Look at Me,” is going to be fulfilled.

It’s Not Just That Sexual ‘Dune’ Sandworm. People Are Obsessed With Collecting Popcorn Buckets

Biden jokes that potential taylor swift endorsement is ‘classified information’, taylor swift’s team says they were ‘threatened’ by papparazi before alleged assault involving her dad.

The twist of Cohen’s comedy (apart from being gorgeous) is that it really could go anywhere — like our conversation. We discuss her hobby of painting portraits of her friends’ dogs (she used to use oils but switched because they’re too messy and “definitely not photorealistic”); who she’d swap bodies with for a day (LSU gymnast Livvy Dunne, because “I’ve never been flexible. I’ve never been able to do a cartwheel. I would love to feel strong and fast for one day. My whole life has been me, like, walking around the track and everyone else runs. I would love to feel lithe.” On second thought? “Honestly, I would swap with anyone who can do a push-up without being on their knees”); and astrology (Leo sun, Virgo moon, Pisces rising, though that whole thing where her horoscope never predicted a life-threatening health scare kind of shifted her views on it).

Cohen is grappling with a lot of the same things her peers are: relationships, health, debating what Taylor Swift era she truly is in her soul ( Reputation, I’ll tell), career, aging. She ponders her waning tolerance to alcohol.
