Licensure Requirements

Since Texas has enacted the Nurse Licensure Compact , you won’t need to get a state-specific nursing license to work there if you already have a multistate license in another compact state if you are a travel nurse.

However, if you are a nurse who currently lives in a compact state and intends to establish permanent residency in another compact state, you will need to apply for  licensure by endorsement within 60 days of relocating. This law does not apply to travel nurses and will become enforced on January 2nd, 2024.

If you are a travel nurse and your primary license is in a non-compact state, you are required to apply for licensure by endorsement. To complete this process, you must have:

  • Graduated from an approved licensed LPN, LVN, or RN program; or
  • Either worked in nursing or taken the US NCLEX ® exam no more than four years before the application

To apply for a licensure by endorsement you must:

  • Submit an online application and pay the fee
  • Provide a background check with fingerprints
  • Take the Nursing Jurisprudence Examination
  • Request a verification of licensure via Nursys Ⓡ

You are ineligible to apply for licensure by endorsement if:

  • You have ever held a Texas nursing license
  • You didn’t graduate from an approved nursing program; or
  • You haven’t taken a national nursing licensing examination

While you are waiting for your application to be processed, the Texas Board of Nursing (BON) will give you a one-time, 120-day temporary license. This licensure will be issued once your fingerprints and verification have been received by the BON. Temporary licenses are only issued once a lifetime and may not be renewed or extended.

You can apply online for a license by endorsement here .

Licensure Fees

The application fee for licensure by endorsement in Texas is $150, coupled with a $72 Nursing Jurisprudence Examination fee. All fees are non-refundable.

Nurse Licensure Compact Status

Texas has been a part of the Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC) since January 19, 2018.

Is Texas a Walk-Through State?

Texas is not a walk-through state.

Texas nurses are required to:

1. Complete 20 contact hours of continuing education every two years; or

2. Demonstrate the achievement, maintenance, or renewal of a Board-approved national nursing certification in the nurse’s area of practice within the licensing period.

Interested in the numbers regarding Texas travel nurse pay? Qualified travel nurses receive an average base salary of about $2,002 per week , which is close to the national average

However, the cost of living in Texas is also around eight percent below the national average. So the money you earn can go a long way, especially depending upon which city you choose.

Thousands of Nurses Love Partnering with Trusted Nurse Staffing

Trusted nurse staffing is such a great company to work for and they are so easy to work with. I love using them as my first company for travel nursing!

My recruiter did an amazing job at finding the best fit for me! An outstanding job with communication, updates and ensuring all my questions were answered!!

I have been with Trusted Staffing for about 18 months now. I have essentially been working local contracts, but the experiences have been memorable. My recruiter, is always available when I have a question or concern. Travel nursing is something all nurses should experience. I can't wait until I can do some serious traveling

Every member of this company I’ve interacted with has exceeded my expectations. My recruiter, Alex, is so commutative and goes above and beyond always. I can’t imagine switching to another company!

I have had the best experience with Trusted Nurse Staffing. My recruiter Tom is amazing. He always treats me with respect and as a friend. He is on top of everything I need. And when my Dad passed away, he helped me with time off, no problem and they even sent me a beautiful comfort box that was very helpful. Fully recommend this agency.

Texas is one place where all the clichés are true. Everything really is bigger in Texas. From the portions of BBQ and Tex/Mex to the wide expanse of sky over rugged terrain, the Lone Star State doesn’t disappoint.

Although modern cities dot the vast landscape, Texas has proudly stayed true to its wild roots. In San Antonio they still “Remember the Alamo” and you can walk the same paths as folk hero’s James Bowie and Davy Crockett. A river runs through this amazing city and you can stroll or take a boat ride to visit the stores and restaurants that line the water.

For a taste of the unusual, visit the quirky city of Austin where locals abide by their small business motto to “keep Austin weird.” Food trucks of all shapes and sizes sell every possible delicacy from cupcakes to the famous Torchy’s Tacos. On Rainey Street, houses have been converted into bars, which makes you feel like you are attending an intimate backyard party with close friends, even if you don’t know a soul! Going out on the infamous 6th Street isn’t for the faint of heart. Two step your way over to Dallas and catch a rowdy rodeo where the collegial atmosphere will remind you that the Texas state motto is “Friendship.”

Texas is bursting with outdoor adventure opportunities as well. With 16 national parks and over 350 miles of coastline, it’s easy to escape for a much needed dose of Mother Nature.

COVID & travel nurses in Texas

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have reported 62,922 COVID cases and 1,790 deaths in the last seven days (as of October 4, 2021). This includes a positivity rate of 10% to 14.9%.

Since the start of the pandemic, there have been 4,057,845 positive COVID cases in Texas and 64,281 deaths. Reports indicate that 59% of the population has received at least one dose of the Moderna or Pfizer vaccine and 51% are fully vaccinated.

Texas has been particularly hard hit with COVID cases, especially during the surge from the delta variant. As a result, news reports indicate that more than ever, Texas is relying on travel nurses to fill the staffing shortage, maintain patient care and help relieve overwhelmed hospitals.

Even before the pandemic, the Department of State Health Services projected Texas would be short 30,000 nurses by 2025. The pandemic has sped up this projection and increased the number.

Sophia Morris, Vice President of Account Management for the travel nursing agency Aya Healthcare, said “There are more than 6,500 out-of-state personnel needed within Texas to assist with surging case numbers and hospitalizations. Of those 6,500 positions, more than half of them are designated ‘crisis needs.'”

The surge in job postings for travel nurse RNs in Texas is expected to continue. A travel nursing recruiter can help you navigate the current listings.

Unfortunately, this is not being seen across all disciplines of nursing.

Cost of living for registered nurses in Texas

As the national cost of living continues to rise, Texas has also seen a recent increase in the cost of living. Cost of living is defined as the amount of money needed to cover basic expenses such as housing, food, taxes, and healthcare.

The cost of living is always higher in larger cities than smaller towns so housing will cost more in Dallas and El Paso than in Abilene and Lewisville. The National Association of Realtors reports that the median home price in Austin was $367,100 in 2020 while the national median was $299,900.

According to Bestplaces.net , the assigned rate for the overall cost of living in Texas is 93.9. The number is below 100 which means Texas overall is cheaper than the US average. Interestingly, Texas’ housing cost is significantly below the national average at 84.3, while transportation is 103.3, above the national average.

Pros & cons of travel nursing

With any career, there are pros and cons to the job. Travel nursing is no different. It’s important to take into consideration your own personal circumstances, family obligations, and reasons for wanting to be a travel nurse. Reasons that some nurses might see as a con may in fact be a positive for you.

Pros of travel nursing

  • Increased earning potential: Travel nurses have the ability to earn significantly more money than staff nurses. Furthermore, they can make more due to reimbursements and incentives. Most travel nurses receive free housing or have a monthly allowance to put toward housing expenses.
  • Travel: One of the main reasons travel nurses start this adventure is to experience different cities and states they may not otherwise get to visit. It also is great for nurses that are not sure where they ultimately want to settle down.
  • Flexibility: You have the ability to take a contract when you want to and where you want to. If you really want to travel to Hawaii, you have the ability to find a contract that fits your needs.
  • Networking: Most don’t consider this a huge pro of travel nursing, but it is! With an increase in the number of nurses that go on for an advanced degree, making connections with different hospitals, providers, and nurses can be very important when trying to find preceptors for graduate-level clinical rotations.
  • Avoid hospital and unit politics: Most don’t like to admit it but bedside nursing comes with drama and politics. It can be as simple as a hierarchy based on seniority or something more serious. Being a travel nurse allows you to avoid all of this by not being fully invested in the unit but rather helping out for a very specific amount of time.

Cons of travel nursing

  • Always the new person: Being new to a unit can be exciting but can also be frustrating or even lonely. Not knowing anyone on the unit can affect the type of help you will get in your work environment.
  • Not the best assignments: Some hospitals will assign travel nurses patients just like any other nurse on the unit. Others will assign them the easiest patients, the hardest patients, or the ones that no one wants to deal with.
  • First to float to another unit: Despite being contracted to a specific unit, most travel nurses will have to float to other parts of the hospital within their skill set. This again will make you the new person which can affect how others perceive you as well as assist you throughout the shift.
  • Finding a place to live: All travel nurse companies offer their nurses places to live during each contract. However, it may not always be in the location that you want, have the amenities you desire, and/or fit your needs. Contracts will offer a housing stipend instead, which most travel nurses take, but then finding appropriate housing falls on you.
  • Changing health insurance policies: With each contract may come a new health insurance policy. This will be dependent on the agency that you work with. If you switch between multiple agencies then there will most likely be a lapse in your health insurance. However, nurses can opt for private insurance and pay out of pocket. That way, when the assignment ends, you won’t lose your insurance.

Texas has more hospitals than any other state in the nation, so there are tons of other hospitals and non-hospital healthcare facilities throughout the state as well. U.S. News & World Report ’s 2021 Best States list ranked Texas at #31 overall, #9 for economy, and #10 for fiscal stability. Texas is wonderful location to live, work, play, and make great pay!

Texas Nurse Licensure

Texas is currently in the Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC) , which allows nurses to practice in other NLC states without having to get additional state licenses. New states are frequently joining so keep an eye on the latest NLC map . Our team is always happy to help you with any Texas state licensing questions.

Texas Travel Nurse Salaries

Registered Nurse pay offered in Texas varies based on several factors. The average salary (hourly rate) for RN positions in TX is $37.58/hr (approximately $71,000/yr) . With that being said, the average hourly wage doesn’t provide much insight for a prospective travel nurse. Factor in the average overtime pay of $11,981 for a better idea of the average annual RN salary. However, this is still not that useful for most nurses.

Highest Paying RN Specialties in TX

The highest demand RN specialties are often in highest paying. The most in demand RN specialties are ICU, OR, ER, L&D, and NICU. MedSurg, Telemetry, and LTAC nurses are also in high demand. Becoming certified and gaining experience in a higher demand unit will help you earn a higher salary as a registered nurse in Texas.

Highest Paying Cities for Nurses in TX

Location is also a huge factor for RN pay. Cost of living factors in to what hospitals are willing to offer, and cost of living is higher in highly populated urban centers. While this is mostly always true, travel nursing opportunities can often pay more in rural areas due to the difficulties in attracting quality candidates. Nurse salaries in Texas vary widely and depend on demand in addition to population density.

The highest paying RN jobs in TX are in Houston, Dallas/Fort Worth, Arlington, San Antonio, McAllen, Killeen, Austin, and Brownsville.

Experience Matters

New grad nurses will be disappointed to learn that experience is one of the biggest factors in calculating salaries. This is doubly true when considering that RNs often have a higher earning potential with travel nursing. Registered nurses must have at least 2 years of experience in order to travel. This is a standard requirement that originates from the facility. However, some hospitals that are in dire straits may be willing to work with a nurse with only 1 year experience. This is the exception, not the rule.

New nurses should focus on acquiring skills, becoming certified, and getting the requisite 2 years of experience before considering traveling.

Job Title & Specialty Matter Too

Nursing jobs in Texas are like any other state, your job title and specialty matter. Nurse Practitioners are often in less demand when it comes to travel nursing. So you may find that the pay difference between perm positions and travel is not that much.

Similarly, case management and nurse manager jobs are often not in as high demand as other RN specialties. Positions like CRNAs (Nurse Anesthetist) are high paying positions no matter where you are. But because demand is lower from a travel perspective you may not receive an offer that knocks your socks off.

The most high demand specialties are those that will see the biggest pay bump from perm positions. These include Medical Surgical, Telemetry, Stepdown, ICU, ER, OR, and L&D.

Earning More As A Travel Nurse

Earning potential for travel nurses is quite different than staff nurses. As a travel nurse you will have an opportunity to earn stipends, have paid housing, receive signing bonuses, and loyalty bonuses . These can, and should, factor into your earning potential calculations.
