Eagles of Death Metal Announce North American Tour

  • By Daniel Kreps

Daniel Kreps

Eagles of Death Metal have laid the foundation for a massive North American spring tour. After canceling the remainder of their Dos Amis European tour  in February, Eagles of Death Metal will be back onstage Thursday with a weeklong trek through Australia, after which they’ll embark on their North American trek starting April 26th in Vancouver.

Following a 10-gig Canadian trek, Jesse Hughes and company will head south for the U.S. portion of the tour, which kicks off May 10th in Burlington, Vermont. The 25-date trek will be punctuated by stops at New York’s Governors Ball (June 5th) and a tour-ending stop at San Bernardino, California’s Lost Highway Festival July 23rd.

For the majority of Canadian dates on Eagles of Death Metal’s spring trek, Death From Above 1979 will accompany the band on the road.

Check out the band’s official site  for overseas dates and full ticket information.

About eagles of death metal.

Eagles of Death Metal is an American rock band from Palm Desert, California, formed in 1998. Founded by Jesse Hughes (vocals, guitar) and Josh Homme (drums), the band also includes a wide range of other musicians that perform both on the band's studio albums and at live shows. Hughes and Homme are the only permanent members of the band, with Homme rarely performing at live shows due to commitments to his other bands. The band's current touring line-up includes Hughes alongside Dave Catching (guitar), Eden Galindo (guitar), Jennie Vee (bass) and Jorma Vik (drums). Despite their name, Eagles of Death Metal are not a death metal band, and the name is intended to be humorous. In a 2003 interview, Homme described the sound of the band as a combination of "bluegrass slide guitar mixed with stripper drum beats and Canned Heat vocals." Hughes is known for his enthusiastic interaction with audiences at live performances. While the band were on stage at the Bataclan in Paris, France, on November 13, 2015, the audience was attacked by terrorists wielding automatic rifles, grenades and suicide vests. The death toll inside the venue was 89, including the group's merchandise manager, but the band members escaped safely out of the venue via a door backstage.

Eagles Of Death Metal

Desert rockers Eagles of Death Metal crawled out of the Palm Desert, California haze in 1998 when Jesse Hughes and the prodigious Josh Homme decided to form a conceptual outlet for their musical idiosyncrasies – both the elements in their name and a desire to construct a garage meets southern rock variation on early Canned Heat . Their four studio albums to date, from Peace, Love, Death Metal to the most recent Zipper Down have given them critical kudos and substantial cult notoriety with everything coming to fruition on the brilliant single “Wannabe in LA”.

Of course, they also attained a different form of attention during the tragic events that unfolded at Le Bataclan club in Paris on 13 November 2015, when the audience was attacked by terrorists. Indeed, among the 89 dead was the group’s merchandise manager, though the band escaped unhurt via a backstage exit.

Generally considered to be a band for the connoisseur, EODM are an addictive pleasure. If you love Queens of the Stone Age , Kyuss, Ween and, er, Duran Duran (they’ve covered the Le Bon boys “Save a Prayer” on Zipper Down ) and also have a penchant for the speaking in tongues grooves of the new wave of Deep South bands then everything below should jerk your chain just nice. Funny, agreeably flash and with crossover appeal to spare (they’ve toured with Arctic Monkeys and Led Zep’s John Paul Jones) the core members, all of whom adopt aliases in the manner of Captain Beefheart ’s Magic Band, Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention and Parliament/Funkadelic, are also serious enough to justify your indulgence. This is one band it would be rude to ignore.

The origins of EODM go back to shared school days when Josh Homme befriended Jesse Everett Hughes who had moved to Palm Desert from Greenville, South Carolina and was being bullied at school. Beefy Josh became his protector and after a few years apart the two formed the band in 1998. Hughes and Homme both liked the idea of an outfit that could stray as far from the usual music business rulebook as possible. Hughes began using aliases: J. Devil (or The Devil), Boots Electric, Fabulous Weapon and many others. Jesse played guitar and sang on the Josh side trip known as Desert Sessions, Volumes 3 & 4 for the Man’s Ruin imprint.

The Eagles of Death Metal emerged organically, Homme declaring their style as “almost a weird Hollywood Strip aspect with the way it looks, you know an eighties metal vibe to it, and for us, Eagles of Death Metal, part of what we’re trying to do is unite the clans. We need to touch every scene and invite everyone to come and dance. I think that eighties metal vibe is one of the only things we really haven’t tapped as far as who in the scene wants to come and dance.”

As for the philosophy, he told one reporter “We don’t take ourselves seriously, but we take the music seriously. I think, ‘Where’s all the fun bands?’…And that’s a shame because I think music is a pleasure device, and it should be used as such.”

As luck would have it the debut album Peace, Love, Death Metal  was a buzz release in California, partly because the boys hit on such a groovy name for their project and partly because savvy ad execs, console bosses and TV folks in Los Angeles started picking up on the tracks in a race to out hip the opposition.

Kicking off with “I Only Want You” and throwing down a slinky rock gauntlet called “Speaking in Tongues” this sophisticated post-garage rock classic has an air of apocalypse in the margins. Check their segue from “Midnight Creeper” to their cover of Stealer’s Wheel’s “Stuck in the Middle”, now recast as “Stuck in the Metal”. That’s what we’re talkin’ about! The UK/European issue added “Miss Sanders” and “Just Nineteen”; the latter being updated for second album Death by Sexy whose cover is a parody of the Stones ’ Sticky Fingers.

More EOMD trash talk abounds on “I Want You So Hard (Bad Boy’s News)” and “Don’t Speak (I Came to Make a BANG!)”. Homme’s ever-expanding parade of pals means that guests here include Jack Black, Mark Lanegan (he adds the velvet to “I Like to Move in the Night”), Alain Johannes and Hole’s drummer Samantha Maloney.

EODM’s third release on Downtown Music is Heart On , the album that could be styled as their commercial breakthrough thanks to the simmering-under hit “Wannabe in L.A.” though we reckon that the crawling bluesy “Cheap Thrills” and the guitar-heavy “I’m Your Torpedo” would swing it for you and grab your attention anyway.

And so to Zipper Down , their official debut on T-Boy Records and UMG. Released on vinyl first in Europe the single “Complexity” was leaked out via Pitchfork Media in June 2105 and trailed with glorious artwork that shows Hughes and Homme dressed as confused Star Trek (classic era) characters sporting the devil’s hooked horns in place of the usual Starfleet insignia. A superb rock and roll roar, “Complexity” is both a send-up of the excesses of the corporate lifestyle and a fully-fledged metal power-pop nugget in its own right.

If that’s a departure then “Skin Tight Boogie” and   “Got the Power” are vintage Eagles… The band premiered their version of Duran Duran’s “Save a Prayer” in Cleveland where they turned the New Romantic power ballad into a cross between ZZ Top and Tame Impala. Basically Zipper Down is vintage biker bar fare, hot, sweaty and best enjoyed at maximum volume. On “Skin-Tight Boogie” Hughes girlfriend Tuesday Cross, the adult entertainment star, guests on vocals: that maybe her too on the cover, in a state of partial undress. If we know we’re not saying. What is out there is the music, loud, lewd and cocking a snook at hipsters everywhere.

And the aftermath of Le Bataclan? Hughes told Vice magazine, “I cannot wait to get back to Paris. Our friends went there to see rock’n’roll and died. I want to go back there and live.” A documentary that concentrates on the band and the horrific aftermath of the attack, directed by Colin Hanks and titled Eagles Of Death Metal: Nos Amis (Our Friends) is a must-watch.

Eagles of Death Metal is an alternative rock/ hard rock band originally from Palm Desert, California in the United States.

First formed in 1998, and despite having a continually changing lineup, has consistently had Jesse Hughes and Josh Homme in the band. Due to the Homme’s other band, Queens of the Stone Age, who had gained global massive success; however during an interview, Homme assured fans that he was as much a part of Eagles of Death Metal as he was Queens Of The Stone Age. Several other members have included Dave Grohl (frontman for The Foo Fighters), Jack Black, and Brody Dalle (of The Distillers).

Eagles of Death Metal finally released their debut album in March 2004 entitled “Peace, Love, and Death Metal.” Several songs were used in American television commercials for various companies such as ask.com and Budweiser, and was also used in films, such as Grindhouse. They followed up with the release of “Death By Sexy” in 2006, and then set out on tour with The Strokes as well as a headlining tour themselves. In 2008 the band again released another album entitled “Heart On,” and performed on a live webcast for Fuel.tv as part of their Heart On tour. Just as Homme had Queens of the Stone Age to work on in between Eagles of Death Metal, Hughes was also working on a solo project, releasing a debut album in 2011. In late 2013 Hughes made an announcement via social media that the band was working on new material.

Live reviews

Firstly I have to say I love Eagles of Death Metal. I saw them for the first time in November 2015 with my 14 year old son. It was his first standing gig. It's fair to say they did not disappoint. 2 days later the terrorist attack at the Bataclan happened.

What has ensued beginning with the Love you all the time covers campaign to some of the quite frankly ludicrous statements Jesse Hughes left me torn about my love for the band. Yes the music put a smile on my face but some of the press generated by the Devil himself left me doubting the Peace Love Death Metal ethos. I doubted I could see them live again.

Whilst on holiday I got a notification for their gig at the Barrowlands and immediately bought 2 tickets.

I felt no enthusiasm leading up to the gig. Even with my now 15 year old son constantly hitting me with "I hope they play this, or play this again"

So the night of the gig comes round. White Miles were supporting them again as they had in November. Their performance seem some what subdued. The drummer almost sober this time round. But still a cracking set and a band well worth checking out.

Previously the band had come onto Magic. Before launching into their opening number. This time however they came onto the Bay City Rollers, I despise the Bay City Rollers.

Then they blasted into I only want you. There can be no doubting the quality of the  showmanship the band as a whole deliver. Jesse is of course the leading light bit without the support of a fully commited band to back his every move it would be a lack lustre affair.

As ever the band threw a ton of guitar picks and towels into the audience trying to involve everybody in the event that evening had become. Crashing through old tracks and new tracks a like. Even throwing in a Bowie cover of Moonage Daydream. Whilst I never saw him play, the Eagles of Death Metal cover was a thing of beauty and Davy Joe's solo was proof that rock n roll is always worth the effort.

As is customary Jesse came on for a couple shortened versions of songs picked from the audience played solo.

The emotion shown by the band when the crowd were going was immense and it was another cracking night and I was genuinely relieved I'd turned up to see them roll on. Other bands would've fallen by the wayside the 9 months these guys have endured. They've been through hell but look like they've got their selves back together and hopefully there will be more great nights like this one ahead.

Formed in the late 90s, Eagles of Death Metal can boast the inclusion of two rock legends: Josh Homme and Jesse Hughes. Although the Eagles did not achieve the same commercial or critical levels as Homme's far more well known band Queens of The Stone Age, they have an equally solid discography and a devoted following on the live circuit.

With a number of variations of rock including grass, southern, alternative and desert all evident this evening, the audience are simply blown away with the sheer versatility of the two frontmen onstage. Hughes switches between guitars with ease for tracks from a selection of the albums including 'Heart On' and 'Peace Love Death Metal' and offer a succinct overall pace in order to keep the energy levels as high as the amp volumes. Homme is very much in charge of those thumping drum beats tonight and gets a blistering solo during 'I Got a Feelin (Just Nineteen)' which evokes huge roars from the masses. The six musicians onstage wrap up a masterful live show with 'Speaking In Tongues' and they look visibly pleased as they look out to the adoring sea of hands raised high clapping them on.

My personal philosophy on music is if Josh Homme has a part in it, then it's going to be good music. Unfortunately, the Eagles of Death Metal never really caught on to mainstream success, as their three albums didn't catch on but it is still excellent music and rocks harder than ever when performed live.

The members of the band have basically moved on to bigger projects, but when these guys get together they still rock out harder than ever. They bring a sort of energy to live shows that seems to be somewhat lost these days, as a lot of bands just show up and play their greatest hits and sound like their album. The Eagles of Death Metal bring that vibrant exuberance that when you hear the first strum of a guitar, you know you showed up to the right place and are in for a great show.

Everyone always has a good time at the show, and they play a good mix of songs from all of their albums, but the place goes absolutely nuts when they bust out "Speaking in Tongues" or "Wanna Be in L.A." With Josh and Jesse excelling all over the guitars, vocals, and drums, it's always a treat to watch and a guaranteed good time.

I was on a train on the way to Prague back in November. I was visiting an old friend and we were touring eastern Europe. About the time we crossed into the Czech Republic, there was this eerie and ominous feeling in the air. This was exasperated by the sudden appearance of heavily armed guards boarded and patrolled the train as we rolled into the first Czech stop. Suddenly, the television in the dining car we were sitting in told the whole story.

Paris. As American traveling abroad and seeing the incredible scenes that unfolded, the chaos in the aftermath and the sadness for those who endured the madness, it was then I changed my whole outlook on life. I vowed to take advantage of every breathe I took. I vowed to see the Eagles of Death Metal so that those who would try to stop Rock'n'Roll would never win.

Providence. There is no way this show could have been anymore than a statement that we are here to love one another and have a good time doing it. From the first note to the last, these boys killed it.

jason-hazlett’s profile image

Eagles of Death Metal are the last true rock and roll band out there.

It has everything expected of it. Rhythm, groove, swagger, volume, and the inevitable urge, nay, DEMAND to dance. The band plays tighter than a stripped nut on a rusty bolt and love doing it. Jesse Hughes bleeds bravado and charisma on-stage like none other. He takes his role passionately. He'll sing as hard as he can sing, dance as smooth as he can dance, and if it's called for, by Jove, he will smash his guitar (source: got to see him kill a Maton BB1200 with an overhead smash at El Club in Detroit, 2017).

You *need* to see this band live. Favorite concert experience, hands down.

EDOM was fucking awesome! I've been a huge fan for about 10 years and this was my first chance to see them. Electric's energy was contagious from any area in the room.

I was lucky enough to run into him outside the venue after the show. He met me with a huge smile and the BIGGEST hug! Truly one of the greatest shows of my life!

Thank you Mr. Boots!

What an excellent gig a nice father days present from my son , Jesse Hughes is a great front man he really appreciates the fans he gets in with the crowd and I will defo go and see them again, they are fun band that play happy music also the support band were good White Miles , but just so sad what happened in Paris

Killer band, but the venue was changed to accommodate more fans. The sound wasn't "big" enough for the new location, Jesse's vocals were "lost" ⅔ of the way back into the audience. The real gig was the after-gig gig at White Trash Fast Food, they did an hour set there. Dat was Rock-n-Roll!

Eagles: The Long Goodbye 2024 European Tour: How To Get Tickets

I f you’re a diehard Eagles fan and live in the United Kingdom or the Netherlands, you’re in luck this year. The famed American rockers recently announced a residency tour that is slated to start in May of this year, and it could very well be their last time in either country.

The Long Goodbye Tour is being promoted as the band’s final tour, so this is definitely not a residency to miss, since this could be the last time the band will perform in the UK and the Netherlands. Supporting the residency are American rock band and fellow Hall of Fame musicians Steely Dan.

The residency will start on May 31 in Manchester, United Kingdom at the Co-Op Live Arena. The residency will continue there on June 1, June 4, June 7, and June 8. It’s expected to wrap up on June 13 in Arnhem, Netherlands at the GelreDome. An additional final date in the Netherlands on June 15 will also be available for presale soon.

The Long Goodbye Tour started back in September of 2023 in the United States. Since then, the band has continued touring well into 2024, with additional tour dates announced in the US and Canada.

In a press release for the tour that was posted last July, the band released a statement on the upcoming tour and a look back on their 52-year career.

“The Eagles have had a miraculous 52-year odyssey, performing for people all over the globe; keeping the music alive in the face of tragic losses, upheavals and setbacks of many kinds,” said the announcement , “[..] Our long run has lasted far longer than any of us ever dreamed. But, everything has its time, and the time has come for us to close the circle. […] We want to give all our fans a chance to see us on this final round.”

How To Get Your Tickets

It’s always sad to see a band retire for touring, but this is all the more reason to get your hands on tickets to the UK or Netherlands shows ASAP. Luckily, buying tickets for the European residency is super easy. Live Nation is the official ticketing platform for this tour, so you’ll be able to purchase general admission and VIP tickets through Ticketmaster .

If your chosen tour date is sold out by the time you’re ready to buy tickets, you might have better luck with Viagogo . This platform is backed by the FanProtect Guarantee, so you won’t have to sweat about potential scams or fake passes.

The Eagles started back in 1971 and rose through the ranks to be one of the most defining rock bands of the 1970s. Their music is beloved for good reason, seamlessly blending rock, folk, and country styling together. The band’s debut album and its hit song “Take It Easy” are what catapulted them to fame, as well as their 1976 album Hotel California .

You’d think with over 50 years under their belt, their recent live performances would leave fans wanting. Luckily, the band’s still got it. If the nostalgic atmosphere doesn’t take your breath away, the band’s incredible and time-enduring musicianship will. Expect a great medley of the hits from this final tour!

This is likely going to be the Eagles’ very last tour, so don’t miss out on the chance to see them in the UK and the Netherlands. Get your tickets quickly before they sell out!
