Cruise Control Not Working

It would be difficult to find a vehicle on the road today without cruise control. This invaluable feature makes driving long distances easier but can also cause trouble when it malfunctions. Understanding the reasons your cruise control stopped working ensures that you can get the problem fixed quickly for a more enjoyable ride.

While this fault can cause issues with the cruise control system itself, there could also be an effect on the acceleration of your vehicle. That’s why you want to have it looked at as soon as you notice a problem. Let’s take a quick look at the reasons your cruise control may have stopped working.

Reasons Why Your Cruise Control Stopped Working

The most common reason a cruise control stops working is due to a blown fuse or a defective brake pedal switch . It can also be caused by issues with the throttle control system or the ABS. In older cruise control systems, it can be caused by a broken vacuum line.

Here is a more detailed list of the possible reasons your cruise control is not working:

1. Blown Fuse

broken fuse

All electrical systems in the vehicle are controlled by fuses. Your cruise control system is attached to a fuse that can blow if there is a short circuit or fault. Without a good fuse, the cruise control system can’t work at all.

Thankfully, it’s not difficult to find and replace a blown fuse. Look in the owner’s manual to find the fuse that corresponds with the cruise control technology.

2. Defective Brake Pedal Switch

push brake pedal

The brake pedal switch is responsible for turning the brake lights on and off based on the pedal position. Cruise control systems are designed to disengage whenever your brake pedal gets pressed.

Because the cruise control is wired into the brake pedal switch, any fault can cause it to stop working. When the brake pedal switch malfunctions, the car believes the brakes are engaged, causing the system to turn off automatically. Not only that, but your car’s brake light might also be stuck on, leaving confused drivers in your wake.

3. Malfunctioning Speed Sensor

abs sensor close

Speed sensors are located on every wheel or differential. The purpose of these sensors is to monitor the speed of the wheels to determine if traction control is needed.

The speed sensors are also part of the cruise control system. When a sensor fails, the cruise control can stop working and the speedometer might act strange as well.

If there is an issue with a speed sensor, it will often show with an ABS warning light or a check engine light on the dashboard.

4. Electrical Issues

cruise control buttons

The cruise control system is electronic, with many components working together to make the system operate. If the cruise control fails to work, you want to check the wiring harness and associated connectors for a fault.

You also need to ensure that the voltage source is supplying enough power to the system. Even the smallest fault can cause defects with the cruise control. In many cases, there can be an issue with the cruise control lever or buttons causing the cruise control to not engage.

If your cruise control buttons are located on the steering wheel it could also be caused by a bad clock spring, which is located behind the steering wheel.

Check the system with an OBD2 scanner to look for any trouble codes related to the cruise control.

5. Damaged Vacuum Actuator, Hoses or Cable (Older cruise control)

If you drive an older vehicle with cruise control, you might have an issue with the vacuum actuator or the cable that connects to the throttle. If there has been damage done to the vacuum hoses or the actuator, the cruise control will stop working altogether.

Additionally, the cable linking the actuator to the throttle must be in good shape. If it has been broken, the cruise control will fail.

What is Cruise Control?

Cruise control is a feature that is used when you are traveling at a consistent speed. Cruise control was first introduced for automobiles in the 1950s. However, it took many years before it became a staple in the modern vehicle.

This electrical system allows you to set a predetermined speed and take your foot off of the gas pedal. If you are on a long drive, there is less fatigue because you don’t have to try to maintain your speed. Cruise control can also benefit fuel economy because the vehicle uses less fuel when traveling steadily.

In newer cars, you might be able to find adaptive cruise control , which is a smart technology. Adaptive cruise control allows you to travel at a predetermined speed, but it also helps to maintain a safe distance from the vehicles in front of you with the help of sensors. With conventional cruise control, you need to take over when the car in front of you slows down, but that’s not the case with adaptive cruise control.

There are also vehicles nowadays with not only cruise control, but fully self-driving vehicles . We will most likely see much more of this in the future.

Cruise Control Repair Cost

The cost to repair your cruise control system depends on what caused it to fail. If you need to replace a cruise control or brake switch, you might spend between $125 and $350, including parts and labor. However, the cost to change a fuse is only a few dollars and you can perform the replacement yourself in just a matter of seconds.

On the other hand, when something major fails, such as the actuator, you could be looking at a much higher repair bill. In some vehicles, the cost to replace a cruise control actuator can cost more than $700. These costs rise if you drive a luxury vehicle or one that is difficult to get parts for.

It might not seem immediately important for you to fix the broken cruise control, but this defective system can affect other performance aspects. You could start to notice issues with acceleration or have trouble with the speedometer. To play it safe, it’s always best to have the cruise control repaired as soon as you notice a problem.

Is there a fuse for the cruise control?

Yes. If the cruise control is installed from the factory, you should check your car’s owner’s manual for the fuse location. If it’s an aftermarket cruise control, you’ll need to follow the wires to find the fuse.

Does the brake switch affect the cruise control system?

Yes. The brake switch affects the cruise control system. The brake switch sends a signal to the cruise control system to let it know when the brakes are being applied for the engine to know when it should stop accelerating.

Will the cruise control work if the check engine light is on?

The cruise control function will be disabled when the check engine light is on in most car models, even if the cause of the check engine light is not the cruise control itself. This is mainly due to safety reasons.

Can a vacuum leak affect cruise control?

Older vehicles use vacuum to control the throttle for the cruise control, and in this case a vacuum leak can heavily affect the cruise control. However, modern cruise controls are fully electric and in most cases will not be affected by a vacuum leak if the check engine light is not illuminated.

Although many people may think that the cruise control system is unimportant and not worth spending money to repair, the problem can be caused by a faulty part that will affect the engine’s performance or durability. Therefore, it is best not to ignore the problem if your cruise control is not working without first diagnosing the car properly.

If your cruise control still isn’t working after trying all the tips in this article, it’s probably time to take it in for a professional opinion from a mechanic. It may be a more serious problem that requires replacement parts or repairs. In the meantime, drive safe and enjoy the open road!

Hmmm. Interesting thought. The horn works, though. Buttons on the left do NOT but some of the buttons on the right DO. Also just noticed the Bluetooth speaker and mic don't work. Possibly related?

To save on the number of clock springs, switches select different resistor values, switch contacts can be tested with an ohmmeter, perhaps someone spilled a coke on them. Some switches can be taken apart and have the contacts cleaned, others are candidates for the trashcan. Private sale? Didn't check everything out first? Usual case, purchased someone else's problems.

Thanks! That's a great idea. I'll take it apart and see what I can do. It was a private sale from a friend. It is mechanically excellent but I knew there would be things wrong--just figured I'd see if I could fix any of the more noticable and annoying things. The car is going to live far away from me and be used for a vehicle when we visit our kids and grandkids on the other side of the US when we vacation. And by we, I mean the wife...since I have to work.

If you list which specific functions (of the wheel switches) work and don't work, we may be able to see some commonality; especially if somebody posts a schematic.

On my latest toy, complete control of the radio on the left side of the steering wheel, but since I been using the radio dash controls for the last 57 years, hand automatically goes directly to the radio even for hand free calls. On the right side, switches for a lot of remote control, distance fuel economy, still has a fuel gauge, but next to that the most important switches, cruise control, that has got to work, can get a speeding ticket for driving 27 mph hour in town with a 25 mph speed limit. So what controls do you have, all my 88 Toyota has is the cruise control switches. Daughters 2018 Kia base model Soul, what a name, came with a blank panel on her steering wheel, did a net search and found the cruise control switches on a panel that snapped in that same slot as that blank panel on ebay. Had to add a wire so now here cruise control works perfectly, jerks don't want to install that on base models, not only Kia, but everybody else except with GM, have to replace the entire steering wheel for 250 bucks. That snap in panel with free shipping cost me 15 bucks. Dash lights up as well with the cruise on and can pulse mph up or down or switch it off. Is possible you may find some switches on ebay. With these DOT unibodies, one dent makes them unrepairable, so litterally thousands of wrecking yards are on ebay.

Did some more playing with it today. It looks like the right side buttons all work, but the left ones do not. Horn does work. Picture attached (of the non-working buttons).

Not sure about your Toyota, same buttons on other cars, top is radio volume, provided you have a stock radio, aftermarket is a good guess. Does the radio volume control work on your radio? Next roll is a station selector, AM, FM,or selects different MP3's if your radio has this feature, or maybe a CD players, cassettes are kind of history. Mode switch primarily selects between AM or FM, or whatever features your radio has. Like it says, holding the mode switch turns your radio off. Bottom switch is for so-called hand free calls, have to pair your cell phone with it via bluetooth. On older systems just works for answering your phone, newer one, had to key in all of your contacts one digit at a time, name, number, newest ones, copies all of your contacts off your phone. Why it doesn't work, good question, switch, radio, has its own connector, disconnected, practically all of these switches just duplicate the ones on your radio, do these functions work on your radio?

My eye caught that 350,000 miles on the vehicle, clock spring maybe the only thing wrong with it. Also redundant, just for the radio. Use to use just a slip ring and a brush for the horn only, these multifunction switches rely on precise output voltages so a direct contact is definitely required. Every time you rotate the steering wheel, that spring winds and unwinds, after 350K miles could break, see used one on ebay in to 30 to 120 buck range, these are complete assemblies, guys buying base model cars wanting to add cruise control just got the spring. These are preowned, I think that means used or even used up. NickB2 mentioned the air bag, definitely has to be removed, this vehicle is 13 years old, not sure if the airbag circuit has to be manually discharged, somewhere along the years, added a bleeder resistor to it so the only requirement is to disconnect the battery and make dang sure it is disconnected many got broken necks by not doing so. Something to think about for this minor convenience of operating the steering wheel controls for the radio. Also seem to lack heater, shift, and windshield wiper controls. Wife flunked her drivers test three times by taking her right hand of the steering wheel to manually shift gears. I drove her route maximum rotation on the steering wheel with these new cars was 30 degrees, left or right and effortless with power steering. Idiots in the DMV, I took my test in a 37 Caddy Limo gear shift on the floor, had to roll down the window to signal my turn, right hand off to shift gears, and about a ten turns on the steering wheel lock to lock, but I made darn sure I removed my suicide knob first, but passed my test. For her to pass, had to buy a vehicle with an AT. Shame on me, still operate my radio with my right hand, not easy to see all those pushbuttons on the wheel, and still can see my radio with my excellent side vision, not taking my eyes off the road.

I have a clock spring on order, but just got a little more history: everything worked fine until a couple years ago when there was a recall and the dashboard was replaced. At that time the buttons on the left side of the steering wheel and Bluetooth stopped working. He never took it back to get repaired... So it sounds like something probably didn't get plugged in properly. Does that maybe change the direction of what the remedy may be? Thanks for everyone's advice!!!

Radio's use to have just two connectors, power in and speaker out connector and another for the antenna. Quite a few more today, one new car I purchased, a GM, the radio didn't work, how did it leave the factory? Rather than fool with it, took it back to the dealer, one of the six connectors was only plugged in half way. It this is your problem, kind of wasted buying a clockspring assembly anyway and really not a joy to installed with that airbag in the way. DIN radios needed two U-shaped hooks, two little holes on each side, install the hooks, pull them outward, radio is in your hand. No telling what you have to do today, new law against screws, chrome strips snap in and have to try to snap them out without bending it, but snap in so easy. If you break off tabs, will have to live with rattles. Shark fins require to remove the head liner first, also snaps in. Air bags kicked out the dash speakers, in doors now like your feet have ears. More stuff to unsnap.

If this happened at that exact time then I would hold off on the clockspring.

CarComplaints.com Notes: An increasing number of Toyotas are experiencing excessive oil consumption and the 2007 Camry seems to be leading the charge .

Owners are reporting that their engines are deprived of oil halfway through their maintenance schedules and in some cases the damage is so bad that entirely new engines need to be installed, paid out of pocket. The issue may be a result of defective piston rings .

Toyota has issued a TSB for this problem, but maintains their stance that vehicles equipped with a 2AZ-FE engine are burning through a “normal” amount of oil.

Do you have a check engine light or pending codes?

No check engine light or pending codes

Maybe steering wheel switch or clockspring. Test to see what is going on. Get the Electrical Manual here ; https://www.gmupfitter.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/2008_LD_ElectricalPickupsChassisCabs.pdf Search for 'cruise' and see what you can find. No simple answers. Would be much easier to figure out what the problem is with a full featured scanner but you can do it with a test light and DVOM.

Cruise Control Stopped Working 2007 Tundra

  • Add to quote

A few weeks ago my cruise control light would not come on the dash when I tried to switch it on via the stalk. I parked it and restarted it and it began working fine again. Today got in it, its not working again. Push in the button, no light, nothing. Cruise will not work. Stopped a few times, shopped, came back and restarted it, still not working. Looked all over for fuses and couldn't find any. Any one familiar with this? What should I look for? Thanks.

2007 camry cruise control not working

Probably the switch or a connection is bad. Everything about cruise control is handled by the engine ECU. Is everything else working OK??

No issues with any thing else. Did just have it at the dealer to replace brake rotors, pads, lube the sliding pins. Also rotated the tires.

Don't know if this is relevant, but I believe that on my old Chevy, the cruise would not engage if one of the brake light bulbs was out. This may not be the case, but my point is, that it could be related to some minor issue, not normally thought of as being related to cruise control.

So I took it to the dealer. They said that they were having issues with the switch and that Toyota was aware of it. Replaced it at no charge. Spent 2 hours waiting and it didn't fix the problem. They then told me it was a "Spiral cable" and it would be over $400 to replace. I guess it's mostly the labor to pull the covers off. Looked all over Partznet for this mystery cable and couldn't find anything. I imagine it is like the clock-spring type that requires removing the steering wheel. I've done it on an MR2, so think I can handle it, but can't find the part.

This should be the part. $220 here, but might be cheaper at a couple of the other online stores. CABLE SUB-ASSY, SPIRAL. SWITCH & RELAY for 2007 TOYOTA Tundra. #843060E010

I got the replacement spiral cable and installed it, cruise works fine. Air bag light is now on. OBD Reader not showing any codes. I've pulled it apart two times and rechecked all the connections. All secured. Airbag light is still lit. PITA!!!!

2008 Camry V6 Cruise Control is not working

  • Add to quote

Hi, my cousin's camry has a cruise control problem. It's not turning as we press the switch on the steering wheel. There's no light illuminating and we looked around the car for the fuse, which we did not find. I tried calling the dealership and they said there's no fuse for the cruise control for this model. It is built into the ecu. I believe there should be a fuse for it. Does anyone else have this problem and if there is a fuse, could someone help please? Thanks

2007 camry cruise control not working

There is no special or separate fuse. The brake pedal stop switch can cause the problem as well as the spiral cable in the steering wheel, not to mention the cc stalk switch it self. It's time for point to point continuity checks on the above items.
