Very nice, clean when they come and good placement. Expensive

Good to live there for a couple years stayed with friends and enjoyed my time there

Really good hall, central location.

Nice building and spacious kitchen and rooms

Nicest building but a bit expensive

It is the newest accommodation at Loughborough and with that, you get a modern en suite accompanied with a big and modern kitchen perfect for socialising and cooking

Claudia Parsons is definitely one of the best accommodations that Loughborough uni has to offer. It’s the newest and the most modern, with all the facilities needed. though the social side could be better.

Nicest hall on campus, great rooms, en suites and kitchen facilities. Would not have wanted to been in any other hall c

Looks Great, Feels New and Has all the Facilities you need.

Best accommodation on campus, great social spaces and so easy to meet new people.

Claudia Parsons is a modern accommodation hall with everything you will need! The rooms may be smaller than some of the other halls, but the cleverly placed storage allows for this.

Thank you for your review!

Such a wonderful place to live for the year. Great community and very helpful kind staff. The living area is spacious and modern although the kitchen cupboards are slightly narrow. The cleaning is done frequently and thoroughly but also has the necessary equipment if you wish to clean between these times. There is plenty of storage space in the rooms with a nice layout perfect to satisfy the needs of any uni student. The Hub and laundry rooms are close by and the facilities are kept to a high standard. The hub is also a nice place to relax with friends playing table yess is and pool or a perfect place for revision as well. Overall Claudia Parsons is a wonderful place to live and is quite central on Campus so quite convenient no matter what you study or whatever other activities you do.

The importance of sustainability at Loughborough University from a student’s perspective

5 March 2024

This is a guest blog, by Katie Edwards, the new student Campus and Sustainability (CAS) representative for Robert Bakewell hall. This blog was written as part of the hustings process, where new representatives are elected for hall committees, and will contribute to the Green League rankings.

There are many reasons why we need to be more sustainable here at Loughborough University. Some of the main reasons are creating a healthier environment, slowing climate change, and preserving our planet. Studies show that the Earth’s biocapacity is declining, and many of the resources we currently rely on are not infinite. Therefore, it is extremely important to be more sustainable to preserve the number of resources we are using up. We need to be able to save and protect these resources for ourselves and future generations.

Loughborough University is well known for having a green and biodiverse campus which has many social and environmental benefits. This is extremely important because nowadays so much of our waste ends up in oceans and landfills where it is affecting the environment and its biodiversity. We are unconsciously destroying our planet.

Here at the university, we need to act in a more socially responsible way to be able to make a positive impact against climate change and striving for net zero. We can achieve this by spreading climate change awareness and helping people to become more sustainable. As a community we need to adapt to create a better future.

We can easily become more sustainable by introducing a few simple elements into our lifestyle such as:

  • Taking shorter showers to save water.
  • Turning off lights when not in use to save energy.
  • Travelling using the bus to reduce carbon emissions.
  • Limiting food waste by meal planning and not over buying food.
  • Shopping sustainably by buying second hand clothing because the textiles & fashion industry is the second biggest contributor to climate change ( Sustain Your Style , 2024).

There is no better time to act than now, because waiting only limits our options.

Travel across London and beyond

There are a number of different ways to travel across London, although public transport is usually the easiest way to explore the city. London's transport system has excellent connections with all UK cities and beyond, which is great if you want to visit Europe whilst studying in the UK!

Train travel

The london underground.

The London Underground, or 'the Tube' is often the key mode of transport for visitors, students and workers travelling across the city. The service normally runs from 5am until midnight, with night services operating on some lines every Friday and Saturday evening. The Tube fare varies depending on how far you travel, the time of day, and your method of payment.

The nearest tube station to our campus is Stratford Underground – take the Here East Shuttle bus directly from campus to the station (journey time is approximately 5 minutes).

London rail services

There are a number of rail operators in operation across Greater London and beyond, including SouthEastern Railway , Southern Railway , London Overground , Greater Anglia , West Midlands Trains , and East Midlands Trains . How much you pay depends on the time of day and which lines you use.

London is a globally connected city, with quick and easy access to destinations across the UK and Europe. St Pancras International train station is just a six minute train journey from Stratford International, and offers access to Paris, Brussels and Amsterdam via the Eurostar .

To travel to the Loughborough campus from London, East Midlands Trains offer a direct service to Loughborough from St Pancras International (journey time is approximately 90 minutes).

Discounted travel for full-time students

If you’re 18 or over, live at a London address during term time and you are studying a full-time programme with us, you may be eligible for an 18+ Student Oyster photo card, which offers 30% discount on travel on most rail, bus and tram services in London, including the London Underground. For more information including instructions on how to apply, please visit the Student Services desk on the second floor of the campus.

If you think you will travel regularly within the UK, then you may benefit from purchasing a 16-25 Railcard which entitles you to travel by rail anywhere in Britain at a 34% discount. To buy a rail card you will need to provide proof of your age (e.g. passport) and a passport-size photograph.

Coach travel

There are coach companies that you can use to visit a wide variety of UK cities and connect with airports. Although longer, coach travel is usually cheaper than rail travel. Services operate day and night, with more than 100 routes offering a service every 24 hours.

Popular coach companies include:

National Express

Victoria Coach Station is a central pick-up point for many coach services, and can be reached via train in 30 mins by taking the Javelin high speed train to St Pancras and then changing to the Victoria line.

London's major airports include City, Gatwick, Heathrow and Stansted. Most international flights arrive at Heathrow Airport.

London City Airport is the closest airport to the campus, and can be reached in less than 25 minutes using the DLR train. London City Airport offers direct flights to many major destinations in the UK and beyond, including Glasgow, Edinburgh, Dublin, Rome, Florence and Berlin. You can even fly to New York!

Average journey times to other London airports

External websites for flights, hotels and car hire include:

  • Skyscanner  for international and domestic flights
  • EasyJet  for low cost flights and hotels in Europe
  • Ryanair  for low cost flights and hotels in Europe

Travel by car

Cars can be expensive to buy, insure, fuel and park, so consider whether or not you really need one, especially if you’re on a budget. Whilst it is free to drive on the roads close to campus, there is a Congestion Charge for cars travelling across some areas of central London. Please also note that there isn't any free parking close to campus.

London taxis

Travelling across London by taxi can be expensive. We would recommend you travel by public transport, but if you would rather travel by taxi we suggest booking in advance.

Student Oyster photocard

All full-time postgraduate students aged 18 and over may be eligible for a Student Oyster photocard , giving a 30% travel discount on most Transport for London services.

For help and information regarding the Student Oyster photocard, please visit the Student Support Desk located on level 2.

Russian Tours and Cruises from Express to Russia

Moscow State University

  • Guide to Russia

What is the history of Moscow State University?

• Moscow State University was founded on the initiative of Mikhail Lomonosov on 12th January 1755 . It inspired the democratisation of education in Russia, with students and teachers of non-noble backgrounds, lectures and library open to the public, and publishing houses. The university soon flourished into the educational, scientific and cultural centre of Russia • MSU expanded greatly in the Soviet period . Emphasis was placed on science and technology, culminating in truly pioneering research and discoveries. However, the ideology of the regime negatively affected academic development across the board, particularly in the humanities • Today, Moscow State University remains Russia’s top university , attended by over 40,000 students studying nearly all branches of modern science and humanities. It works closely with universities throughout the world and is involved in many educational and research projects

Moscow State University is Russia’s oldest university and the educational and scientific centre of the country, counting Noble Laureates, renowned scientists, intellectuals and political figures among its current and former staff and students. Its main campus is perched on a hilltop overlooking Moscow and is home to one of the capital’s most commanding buildings. Aside from exploring the campus to get a glimpse of life at Russia’s top university, you can visit Moscow State University’s many affiliated attractions on campus and around the city, including the Zoological Museum, Museum of Geology, Botanical Gardens, and viewing platform from the 32nd storey of the main building.

History of Moscow State University

Moscow state university during imperial russia.

MSU during Imperial Russia

Moscow State University was established in 1755 on the initiative of acclaimed intellectual and polymath Mikhail Lomonosov, and was known as the Imperial Moscow University until 1917. At the time of opening it consisted of three faculties – philosophy, law, and medicine – and was attended by 100 students. Lectures were delivered either in Latin, the language of educated people at the time, or in Russian. The university was initially located in the Principal Medical Store on Red Square, whose position is now occupied by the State Historical Museum.

Did you know? Moscow State University was founded on 12th January 1755 (Old Style, corresponding to 25th January New Style), the day of Saint Tatiana. Since then, Tatiana has been considered the patron saint of students, and Students’ Day is celebrated on 25th January every year. It has become customary on Students’ Day for the university Rector to treat students to mead brewed according to his secret recipe.

Imperial Moscow University played an outstanding role in the democratisation of education in Russia. Mikhail Lomonosov pointed out that European universities valued first and foremost the academic achievements of a student, and not their social standing or family background, and from its establishment, elitism was alien to the spirit of the university community. Non-nobles were allowed to enrol, and only serfs were not admitted; by the late 18th century, the majority of students and professors were of non-noble backgrounds. Initially, tuition at the university was free for all students, and later scholarships were funded by rich merchant families who were the patrons of the university. Lectures were open to the public, as was the university library, which remained Moscow’s only public library for a century. A publishing house and bookshop were established on campus in 1756, printing Imperial Russia’s most popular newspaper, Moskovskie Vedomosti (Moscow Gazette), as well as Moscow’s first literary periodical, Poleznoe Uveselenie (Useful Entertainment).

By the 18th century, Imperial Moscow University had become the educational, scientific, and cultural centre of Russia and was well established in the international community. This continued into the 19th century, as the university was a melting pot for all sections of society and attracted freethinking people concerned with the future of Russia. It was often a real battleground between the Westernisers and Slavophiles (supporters of Western ideas and those who thought Russia had its own unique way of development). With the abolition of serfdom, the university went through a period of reforms, as the country required highly qualified specialists in all sectors of work. In the second half of the 19th and early 20th centuries, Imperial Moscow University founded a large number of scientific and intellectual societies and educational, historical, and cultural institutions including the Zoological Gardens, Anthropological Museum, and the Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts in Moscow, and the Academy of Arts in St Petersburg.

Did you know? The French invasion of Moscow in 1812 desecrated the university, with the total destruction of the library, archives, museum, and laboratories. Thanks to the donations of intellectuals from all over the country, the restoration of the university was soon made possible.

As a powerful centre of knowledge which closely followed intellectual developments elsewhere in Europe, university life became increasingly politicised. This came to a head at the beginning of the 20th century, when the emergence of social-democratic organisations caused the Tsarist government to threaten to close the university, bring troops onto campus, and expel professors and students. This conflict continued until the outbreak of the First World War.

Moscow University During Soviet Russia

MSU during Soviet period

Photo on Wikipedia

The Russian Revolution changed the entire system of higher education: in accordance with a decree issued in 1918, any person over the age of 16, regardless of gender or background, could attend any higher educational institution even without a certificate of secondary school graduation. What’s more, tuition fees were abolished and grants were provided to all. These measures hugely opened up higher education to the wider population, and by 1922 over 20,000 students attended Moscow State University. As science and technology were considered a national priority, distinct emphasis was placed on practical classes and scientific and mathematic disciplines. By the outbreak of the Second World War, MSU comprised 75 departments, 11 research institutes, 66 laboratories, four museums, and two observatories.

Nevertheless, the university’s primary focus was training as many students as possible for the Soviet state apparatus. The quality of teaching fell as many esteemed scholars left (or were expelled from) the university. Faculties which were considered to be ‘poisoned’ by the ideology of the old regime, such as the Faculties of Law, History and Philology, were abolished and replaced with the Faculties of Social Sciences, whose aim was to disseminate Soviet ideology and the ideas of scientific socialism; the humanities were only reintroduced 10 years later in a separate institute altogether. Stalin’s political repressions negatively affected the development of academic research. Soviet scientists and scholars were deprived of contact with their colleagues abroad, persecuted, imprisoned, and even executed, and certain branches of science were condemned as propagating an ideology alien to Communist ideas. Many thousands of students and staff were drafted to fight in the Second World War, 3000 of whom lost their lives. During the war, the university focused on military science, inventing new explosives and developing aircraft.

In 1940, the university was renamed the Moscow State University named after M. V. Lomonosov , the name which it holds to this day. In the post-war period, the new campus was built on Vorobyovy Gory (Sparrow Hills) and equipped with state-of-the-art lecture halls and laboratories. Funding to the university increased fivefold, new research institutions were created, and international collaboration was once again fostered.

Did you know? 12% of all scientific discoveries registered in the USSR are attributed to alumni of Moscow State University.

Moscow State University During Russia Today

MSU today

Photo by Eldar Vagapov on Wikipedia

Following the collapse of the Soviet Union, Moscow State University was instated as a self-governing institution. Today, the university is attended by over 40,000 students, and offers over 150 Bachelor’s degree programs and 500 Master’s degree programs in nearly all branches of modern science and humanities. It comprises 43 faculties and 380 departments staffed by more than 5,000 professors and instructors, among them 300 members of the Russian Academy of Sciences and other Russian state academies, and a library of almost 10 million volumes. U of I Locations: Moscow (Main Campus)

From the moment you step on campus, you’ll understand why the University of Idaho has been named the most beautiful college in the state . Iconic buildings are connected by tree-filled green spaces, walkable paths and welcoming plazas. Don’t be surprised if you’re greeted with a friendly smile and wave from a peer or professor, especially on the historic Hello Walk.

Our community extends way beyond campus. Moscow is a tight-knit town of about 25,000 people, full of vibrant activities, businesses and events that love to welcome college students. You’ll find incredible opportunities for recreation and exploration in the surrounding area, too.

Want to see it all for yourself? Plan your campus visit today .

Life on Campus

Whether you live in the residence halls , a fraternity or sorority or off-campus, you’ll be minutes away from your classes and places to study and play.

There’s always something to do: grab a snack in the Idaho Student Union Building , check out a book from the U of I Library 's more than 2 million holdings, take in the beauty of nature in the Arboretum and Botanical Garden , watch a play in the Hartung Theater  or a game in the ICCU Arena , take a fitness class in the Student Recreation Center , catch a Vandal Entertainment -sponsored concert and so much more.

A True College Town

Venture only a few minutes off campus and you’ll be in downtown Moscow. It’s no wonder Seattle Magazine called it “a college town with a soul that shines through year-round” — the calendar is packed with festivals, cultural events and community gatherings like our award-winning farmers’ market on Main Street.

No matter what you like to do, you’ll find an activity to fall in love with . Experience a local art museum or theater production, dance to a live band at a street fair or a local coffee shop, dress in period garb for the Moscow Renaissance Fair or enter a local 5K run or bike race. Volunteer opportunities abound with local nonprofits that support the arts, sustainability, youth and children, the LGBTQ community, health care and more.

And did we mention food? You’ll find a huge co-op with natural and organic options, cozy pubs and coffee shops with Pacific Northwest vibes, locally owned restaurants with cuisines from around the world, and funky hole-in-the-wall spots for affordable college-town snacks.

A Hub For Outdoor Adventure

Moscow sits at the heart of the Palouse, a one-of-a-kind landscape of rolling hills and scenic vistas. We’re surrounded by mountains, lakes and rivers full of opportunities for adventure , whether you love hiking, biking, camping, fishing or just taking in a gorgeous sunset. You’ll experience all four seasons in North Idaho, too — so bring your sunscreen for a late-summer rafting trip and your parka for skiing, snowboarding or ice skating in the winter.

Gain outdoor skills and connect with other adventurous students through the U of I Outdoor Program . Want to take your own excursion? Rent equipment through the Outdoor Rental Center .
