Snorkeling in Redang Island

You are currently viewing Snorkeling in Redang Island

Snorkeling is one of the most popular activities on this tropical island, and it’s easy to see why. As the waters are clear and calm, it is an ideal spot for beginners or those who have not yet developed their sea legs.

Countless species of marine life abound in Redang Island, including clownfish, parrotfish, angelfish, moray eels, and more. There is also plenty of opportunities to observe turtles. It is a paradise for snorkelers and scuba divers alike, with its beautiful coral reefs and pristine beaches.

In this post, we’ll highlight some of the best snorkeling spots in Redang. Some of these spots can be found directly off the beach from your resort or a short boat ride away to the nearby islands.

Beach access

From the beach, you can easily access the following snorkeling spots:

Tanjung Tengah

In the middle of Long Beach (Pasir Panjang)  is Tanjung Tengah, an easily distinguished cape that serves as one of Pulau Redang’s many house reefs. The area is popular with snorkelers who swim out directly from Long Beach.

Tanjung Tengah’s southern end is known as Shark Bay because the reefs here act as nurseries for baby blacktip sharks.

From April to August is the best time to see them. Blacktip sharks are usually harmless to humans, they cruise by without causing problems, but they become dangerous when provoked. A baby blacktip shark can grow up to 60-80 centimeters long.

Due to the easy access to the reefs, it can get crowded. The reefs are easily damaged by accidental physical contact, especially during low tide when some snorkelers accidentally step on or kick the reefs. Not only does this damage the reefs, but it can also cause injuries.

You can swim around the white buoys surrounding the cape. However, you should not go beyond the marker as it will get in the way of boats.

Tanjung Mak Cantik

This long rocky cape south of Long Beach (Pasir Panjang)  is one of the best snorkel spots easily accessible from the shore. Some sand spots lead into the water if you walk across the wooden bridge towards Redang Reef Resort.

There’s a good chance you’ll spot stingrays hiding among the rocks and corals when snorkeling in the area. While swimming around the cape tip and into the bay, you may see coral reefs on the seafloor, but visibility may be low because it is about 10 meters below the surface.

Water may look inviting, but many rocks can cause injury. If it’s windy, the water can be very choppy, so people who aren’t good swimmers should not go into these waters without an experienced guide or friend nearby.

Additionally, there is a quiet bay behind the resort called Teluk Mak Cantik. Use caution when exploring this area. Due to its many slippery flat stones, it is nearly impossible to walk barefoot during low tide.

It is best to wear swim boots with easy-grip soles if you explore this bay.

Teluk Kalong

Telok Kalong is a white sand beach with clear blue ocean waters that has two sections, Telok Kalong Kecil and Telok Kalong Besar. If you stay at one of the resorts in the area, you will have easy access to these snorkeling spots, which are great for seeing colorful fishes.

Even if you don’t get in the water, you can see baby sharks swimming near the jetty. This area also houses the island’s blacktip shark nursery. Near Teluk Kalong Kecil, you can access the house reefs from shore at slightly deeper waters. The reef can be reached from the beach with minimal effort.

Teluk Dalam

Teluk Dalam is a tranquil U-shaped bay divided into two parts by a rocky headland. Taaras resort occupies the smaller section on the west side called Teluk Dalam Kecil. On the east side of the headland is the Teluk Dalam Besar, a secluded bay dotted with local eateries and shacks. Teluk Dalam has soft white sand and clear turquoise waters, which are perfect for swimming or snorkeling.

Snorkeling near Teluk Dalam Besar’s east end can be quite rewarding since you will likely see turtles and colorful fish that live on the coral reefs.

It’s easy to get here from Long Beach either by walking through the forest for about 2km or hiring a boat.

Boat access

Here are some snorkeling sites accessible by boat:

Pulau Ekor Tebu

Pulau Ekor Tebu is a small island known for its rocky coasts and its colorful coral reefs. Located in the southeast of Pulau Redang, this snorkeling spot hosts some of Malaysia’s vibrant marine life. There are frequently snorkeling trips organized here, and you can get a close look at beautiful corals.

You can see gorgeous coral reefs at the bottom of the island’s east side. Eagle rays and shovelnose guitarfish have also been sighted on the island. At the northeast tip of the island lies a large boulder that drops down to 24 meters deep, and there is a cave at the bottom, making it one of the most popular diving sites on the island.

Pulau Pinang (Marine Park Centre)

Pulau Pinang is a small island south of Redang Island that is known for its great snorkeling spots. People often call it ‘Redang Marine Park’ because the Marine Park Centre is located here. Visitors must pay a marine conservation fee to enter.

The boat drops you off at the pier, where you can walk along it to see all the beautiful fish below. The reef outside the Marine Park Headquarters is a great place to snorkel for beginners. It is easy to see all the colorful fish and the coral that live here because the water here is clear. The depth is about 3 to 6 meters.

On the east side of a jetty, a shipwreck rests partly submerged. Corals cover the ship structure, and the water depth here is 8-10 meters. This is an exciting area to explore, but be careful of stinging hydroids and metallic objects. If you are swimming to the shipwreck, be aware of and avoid currents. If there are currents, avoid going; also, stay within areas marked with white marker buoys.

Pulau Pinang has another snorkeling spot called Pasir Akar on its west side. Coral and aquatic life abound here, making it a fun place to explore as well. As part of excursions to the marine park headquarters, many boat trips stop here before dropping you off at the pier.

Fish feeding is a growing trend in the marine park, but the practice is discouraged because it will disrupt the balance of the reef ecosystem. Fish-feeding leads to an overgrowth of algae since herbivorous (plant-eating) fish eat human-fed food instead. This, in turn, chokes corals and leads to coral death. Thus, observing the fishes should suffice, and if you must feed them, then do so responsibly and in a manner that does not disrupt their natural habit.

Pulau Lima is a small paradise located east of Redang Island. Pulau Lima gets its name from the five islets that make up the island, and its name comes from the Malay word “Lima,” meaning five.

According to a well-established study, Pulau Lima and its surrounding seamounts represent a good sample of the entire Renang marine ecosystem. Diverse marine life, including whale sharks and lionfish, can be spotted while snorkeling here.

With a depth of around four meters, the shallow water along the west side of Pulau Lima is ideal for snorkeling. The island has a sandy shoreline that you can swim to from your boat. However, beginners should be careful as currents can sometimes be very strong in this area.

Pulau Kerengga

Pulau Kerengga, located east of Telok Kalong, is divided into a large island with a rocky top on the southern part and a smaller island on the northern side. There is a lush coral garden between the two islands of this island, which consists mainly of flat rock boulder tops.

You can see many different species of fish swimming around the shallow reefs when snorkeling. Here, you may see stingrays basking on the sandy ocean bottom, which is an incredible experience. Also, you can swim to the shoreline and climb up jagged, rocky stone boulders. Be careful of your footing when climbing; the rocks may be unstable.

Pasir Chagar Hutang

Redang Island’s north is home to Pasir Chagar Hutang, a sheltered bay surrounded by rocky cliffs perfect for watching turtles. There is no public access to the beach, which has been the prime location for turtle sanctuaries, so only researchers and volunteers from SEATRU are allowed.

Occasionally, resorts organize trips to see sea turtles at the turtle sanctuary through SEATRU. The boat may pull up a few kilometers from this bay if you want to snorkel in this area. These waters are home to turtles, but the water is too deep for a beginner swimmer.

Teluk Mak Kepit and Mak Simpan

Redang’s west coast has two small beaches known as Teluk Mak Kepit on the north side and Teluk Mak Simpan on the south side. As with Pasir Chagar Hutang, these areas are turtle nesting bays and are overseen by the Department of Fisheries.

Most of the coast here is rocky with minimal reef formation. You can find fewer marine species in front of Pasir Mak Kepit and Pasir Mak Simpan than Redang’s east side. The site still has plenty of fish species, and you may see turtles here as well. As these beaches are turtle nesting beaches, you should observe the nest quietly without disturbing it if you’re fortunate to see one.

Snorkeling Packages

Several resorts offer snorkeling day trips included in the vacation packages, taking you to the best spots on the island to snorkel. Other options include finding independent operators at Long Beach or villagers who will lead excursions starting at RM50 per person. The cost of snorkeling tours is often cheaper than resort packages, so these can be negotiated depending on how many people are in your group and where you want to snorkel.

Snorkeling Gear

Snorkeling equipment can be rented at most resorts for RM30 per set of a mask, a snorkel, and a life jacket. However, some resorts do not rent out snorkel sets but sell them to curb covid-19. Bringing your own set is a good idea for hygiene, and in case this happens. For a reasonable price, you can buy snorkel sets online or at a sports shop. Due to coral reef damage caused by snorkelers wearing fins, fin rental is not permitted. Only divers are allowed to use fins.

Safe & Responsible Snorkeling

The popularity of snorkeling activities and other water sports has unfortunately led to the destruction of reefs, which poses a threat to marine life. Being responsible in the water is paramount for your safety and the safety of marine life.

The following tips will help you have a safe and enjoyable underwater experience while protecting marine life.

Do’s of Snorkeling

1. Make sure you have the right snorkel gear, which includes a mask and tube. It should be comfortable to wear, and the mouthpiece should sit comfortably between your teeth and lips. Additionally, backcomb your hair so that no leaks will occur if it gets trapped on the mask. Make sure the mask fits perfectly on your face.

2. It’s a good idea to practice near shore or in a pool before going out into the open sea. This helps you build your confidence and familiarize yourself with the equipment.

3. Wear a life jacket at all times, especially if you are new to snorkeling. A life jacket can be a lifesaving device when you are tired or encounter heavy currents. Be sure that it fits properly.

4. When snorkeling, your head and shoulders should be horizontal to the water. Don’t tilt them too much; otherwise, salty seawater will enter the snorkel tube. When diving and ascending while snorkeling, hold your breath. Before submerging, take a deep breath to avoid accidentally inhaling water. Exhale through your mouth if you accidentally inhaled water. Before taking a second breath, ascend to the surface and blow out all the excess water.

5. When snorkeling, get to know the location and stay in a designated area. Ask locals or guides about riptides or strong currents if you’re going on an exploration trip by yourself; they can point you in the right direction. Don’t get too far from the group or boat if you’re on the open sea. Keep an eye on your surroundings, and do not get into deeper waters where no one else is.

6. Protect yourself from the sun’s harmful rays with waterproof sunscreen. It is advisable to be extra careful when it is hot and sunny outside. This is because you may not realize that you were burned until it is too late. Wet skin burns more quickly. Consider using biodegradable or reef-safe sunscreens. More info: https://savethereef.org/about-reef-save-sunscreen.html

7. Know how long you can stay in the water. It is easy to get overwhelmed by the snorkeling experience and lose track of time. Dehydration may not be noticed until the symptoms become severe enough or it is too late. Drink plenty of water and stay hydrated if you plan on spending a lot of time in the water. Take a break every half hour or so.

8. Relax and enjoy the experience. As long as you have access to a snorkel, you will be able to float and glide. Kick gently if necessary but do not splash too much. To keep warm, try holding your hand across your chest.

Don’ts of Snorkeling

1. Don’t touch or disturb anything, even if it looks harmless. Do not pick up or handle marine life. You can get hurt by some sea creatures if you get too close to them. Even some corals, anemones, and fish can be dangerous because of their sensitive nature.

2. Coral reefs can be damaged if you stand or step on them. The use of fins for snorkeling in Redang is prohibited since they can cause more harm to this delicate marine ecosystem.

3. You shouldn’t snorkel alone. It’s a good idea to notify someone whenever you’re venturing out into deeper waters since there can be hidden dangers. If you’re swimming near reefs, for example, make sure your buddy stays nearby.

4. Avoid rapid breathing. Avoid inhaling and exhaling too fast when snorkeling, as this will exhaust you and make you feel drained.

5. Keep your trash and plastic pieces out of the water and the beach. It can harm marine life, such as turtles, who may mistake it for jellyfish and choke on a piece. Before leaving, pack up all garbage and dispose of it in designated bins so that none floats around.

6. Don’t overfeed the fish. Although feeding is not explicitly prohibited in the marine park, it is generally prohibited elsewhere, as it contributes to coral decline and disrupts coral habitats. Overgrowth of algae often causes the coral to die away in areas where fish feeding is frequent. If you must feed, do not overdo it.

7. Do not catch or provoke any fishes or marine life. Even if you intend to release them afterward, catching them can cause stress that could cause injury or even death.

8. Don’t take or collect any living or dead marine life. Shells that you find on the beach or underwater are unique in their way and play a crucial role in the ecosystem. Living corals can protect other sea creatures, while empty shells may be home to many species of invertebrates.

9. Do not leave any valuables behind, whether on the beach or the boat. Please put it in an area that is supervised and safe, such as a resort, or store it securely.

10. If you panic while snorkeling, do not grab anyone nearby. Whenever you feel unsafe or in a panicked situation, raise your head and float on your back. Take a deep breath and call for help. Stay calm. Keep your breathing steady so as not to hyperventilate.

1. Explore The Underwater by Scuba Diving

Due to the contention about Pulau Redang being the best Scuba Diving spot, then first we have to strongly suggest this activity. Pulau Redang has over 20 dive spots with many kinds of depths and difficulty levels, so there is something for everyone. For the popular diving spots, you can search for Tanjung Tokong, Tanjong Lang, and Terumbu Kili. If you are keen enough to ask around, you can find and explore two large abandoned shipwrecks from the World War era.

Pulau Redang’s best diving months are between March and October when there is no monsoon rain that causes strong wind or current.

2. Fun Beach Activities

When you are on a beach, it’s impossible for you to get bored. There are too many things to do and see at the beach; swim around, kayak, do a volley ball match, paddleboarding or bodyboarding, play frisbee, and so many other things depend on your creativity.

You can paddle yourself to the mangrove forest around Alor Raja near Teluk Dalam Besar if kayaking intrigues you enough. Mangroves are one of the most biodiverse coastal environments in the world, and they are a home for a wide range of floras and faunas.

Though we said that there’s so many things to do on the beach, there are some activities that are prohibited due to coral reefs and aquatic life protection by the marine park. Such as jet skiing, water skiing, boat racing, and fishing. So please beware!

3. Visiting Redang Marine Park Center

pulau redang day trip

Marine Park Center visitors can choose from a variety of activities while in there. The most popular activities are diving and snorkeling, but there is so much more to explore.

The exhibition center is an excellent experience for many people to learn and educate themselves about marine life and conservation efforts. There is also an exhibition of a turtle shrine where you can see the park’s hatchery filled with cute baby turtles.

The Marine Park center provides basic facilities for the visitors. There is no guest house or hotel here. Instead, you will find some camping grounds that serve as educational venues. There are restrooms on the site, and you will find a small mosque for you to pray.

And if you’re the kind who likes to relax on the beach or have a quiet and peaceful picnic, you can do that too. You will find some picnic tables here as well as small shops where you can buy yourself a set of meals.

4. Sighting the Sunrise, Sunset, and the Stars

Sunset - Trip to Pulau Redang

It’s a sacrifice for some of you, but if you wake up before dawn and head to the beach, you’ll be mesmerized by the sunrise in Pulau Redang. A vividly beautiful moment when you see the light over the horizon. There will be a few people on the beach in the early morning so you can get yourself an intimate moment.

But if you failed to catch the sunrise, no worries. Wait for the evening and sit by to witness the magnificent sunset. The view is different from the sunrise, yet equally captivating. You can just sit and sight, or do a beach stroll to walk by the sunset.

And to continue the night, you’ll find how bright the stars are. You can gaze at them as long as you want. To stargaze at the night on a beach is a very rare moment for most of us. Make sure you capture those moments on your cameras!

5. Nightlife

While Pulau Redang is not a necessary party destination, Long Beach has the best ambience of all. The bars and restaurants are open until late at night, and of course you will find some good alcohol there to accompany the night.

On Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays, some bars will have live music performed by musicians. This is an exciting place to chill and hang out, sing along with others. Many resorts have karaoke lounges, pool tables, and board games provided for you to have fun with your family and friends.

15 Best Day Trips from Moscow

Moscow, the sprawling Russian capital, is a city that’s both full of history and contemporary culture.

This is the centre of the Russian world, a city that armies have invaded, where nations have clashed and where revolutions have played out through the centuries.

It’s a city on the fringe of Europe, but a place that is very much at the heart of European history and politics, and for visitors, it can be a complex and enthralling destination to visit.

As much as there is to see and to do in the city itself, there is just as much to experience on day trips from Moscow too.

While Russia is undoubtedly an expansive country, and many of the better-known cities such as St Petersburg or Volgograd are hundreds and hundreds of miles away, there are many more unknown and unusual destinations to visit within a few hours’ drive of the capital.

Immerse yourself in the Russian countryside, visit war memorials, battlefields and the lavish estates of the former Russian nobility. There are rural villages, grand Orthodox Monasteries and the chance to see Russian life outside of the city first-hand.

Here are the best day trips from Moscow.

Korolev, Russia

Located just an hour north of the Moscow city centre, Korolev is an area that is almost a suburb of the expansive capital, but has retained its own unique identity. During the Soviet era, this was one of the most important industrial areas in the country, because this was the base for Soviet Space Exploration.

During World War II, the factories here produced anti-tank guns that helped keep the Soviet Union in the fight. After Germany was defeated, the factories and research centres began to focus on space.

The city became a ‘Science City’ as skilled workers from across the Union came here to settle and to launch the space programme. It became one of the more affluent areas in the country, and today, that distinction can still be seen on the streets and in the buildings.

When the Soviet Union collapsed, Korolev remained the headquarters of Russian space travel and still hosts Russian Mission Control.

2. Borodino

Borodino, Russia

A two-hour drive to the west of Moscow is the battlefield of Borodino. This is a place that is revered in Russian history, and which perhaps should be much more well-known in wider European history too, because this is where the infamous French General Napolean Bonaparte fought the Russians during his invasion in 1812.

Although the French won the Battle of Borodino and went on to capture Moscow, this was the beginning of the end for Napolean, as he went on to be ravaged by the Russian Winter and was forced to retreat soon after.

Just outside the small village of Borodino is the green and grassy field where the battle was fought. On top of a substantial hill is a lasting monument to the important event.

Kolomna, Russia

Located to the south-east of Moscow is the city of Kolomna, which in comparison to the Russian capital is very much a small-town escape.

This is one of the oldest Russian cities in the region and there is a long and intriguing history to be discovered in the museums and monasteries.

Interestingly, the city was off-limits for much its tenure under the Soviet Union, because it was the site of important weapons factories. It was only in 1994 that the city was opened up and even now it is still very much unknown to tourists.

Kolomna makes for a great day trip, and you can explore the restored medieval walls, and the city’s very own Kremlin, a huge fortress which dates back to the 16th century.

4. Zvenigorod

Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, Zvenigorod

Zvenigorod is as little as an hour’s drive away from Moscow city centre, and the small town makes for a pleasant break from the capital.

Zvenigorod is an old and historic place, with a history dating back almost a thousand years.

There are some beautiful monasteries to visit as well as the unusual Museum of Russian Desserts, where you can sample and explore this aspect of the local culinary culture.

Zvenigorod was also a town where the world-renowned Anton Checkov once lived, and you can visit a museum here that’s dedicated to his life.

5. Sergiyev Posad

Sergiyev Posad

North of the capital is the city of Sergiyev Posad, which is one of the few well-known tourist destinations in the surrounding region.

You will find this as a suggested stop on most travel itineraries to Moscow, and many tour companies include this as part of their excursions around the city because this city is home to the famous Trinity Lavra of St Sergius.

This is a huge Russian Orthodox Monastery which has been here for hundreds of years, and continues to be run by monks who look after the revered tomb of St Sergius, who was laid to rest here.

It’s an important pilgrimage place for Orthodox Christians and an important stop for tourists.

6. Kubinka Tank Museum

Kubinka Tank Museum

Outside Moscow, you can find an unusual museum which will give you a truly ‘Russian’ experience.

The Kubinka Tank Museum was once the location of a Red Army tank testing ground. Now, it’s been turned into a huge museum that showcases every conceivable type of armoured vehicle.

7. Arkhangelskoye Estate

Arkhangelskoye Estate

The Arkhangelskoye Estate was built on the outskirts of Moscow and dates back to the late 18th century when it was constructed by a Rusian aristocratic family.

For over a century, it was the domain of the nobility, until of course, the Russian Revolution and the advent of Communism swept the family that owned the estate out of the country.

The estate was opened to the public by the Communists and turned into a museum, which it remains today.

Restoration work after the fall of the Soviet Union saved the Arkhangelskoye Estate from falling into disrepair and kept the grounds and the grand palace as a lavish example of pre-Revolution Russia.

8. Yaroslavl

Yaroslavl, Russia

Yaroslavl is found a few hours to the north of Moscow and makes for a long day trip from the city. It’s worth the journey to experience one of the region’s most popular tourist destinations.

Yaroslavl is found on the banks of the River Volga and has been a historically important city throughout Russian history. The city has even been the capital of the country at various points.

You can explore the many museums and monasteries to learn more about this intriguing destination.

9. Rostov Veliky

Rostov Veliky

Just south of Yaroslavl is the small but culturally rich town of Rostov Veliky.

This is another important site in Russian history, as the town can date its origins back to early Slavic settlement around Moscow.

Lake Nero is a beautiful and expansive lake near the town, fringed on one side by an ancient fortress, giving Rostov Veliky a wonderful atmosphere to experience.

10. Vladimir

Vladimir, Russia

Two hours east of Moscow is another historic Russian city that is very much on the regional tourist trail.

It makes for a great day trip from the capital because Vladimir dates back to the 12th century and is full of Russian history and culture.

This was one of the first Russian capitals and it still contains many beautiful medieval buildings that are hundreds of years old.

Suzdal, Russia

The small town of Suzdal is just a few kilometres north of the city of Vladimir.

The town is part of a fantastic UNESCO World Heritage Site that encompasses the historic sites from both Suzdal and Vladimir.

The town was founded in medieval times and also acted for a time as an early capital for Russian kingdoms in the region.

Klin, Russia

Klin is a fairly unassuming town to the north-west of Moscow, but it’s worth visiting to see one particular sight, the house of Tchaikovsky.

The famous 19th-century composer spent his final days here and wrote his very last piece of work in the house in Klin. It is now a museum dedicated to his life and work.

It’s a grand estate and an interesting insight into pre-Soviet, Russian culture.

13. Melikova

Melikova

A short trip past the Moscow suburbs will bring you to another famous estate, the house of renowned Russian writer and playwright Anton Checkov.

By the town of Checkov, which was renamed in his honour, the museum of Melikova will take you on a journey through his life and indeed, what the lives of many of his contemporary fellow Russians would have been like too.

14. Gorki Leninskie

Gorki Leninskie

On the southern edge of Moscow is Gorki Leniniskie.

This grand estate was once the realm of Russian nobles, but after the Russian Revolution it was personally taken over by Vladimir Lenin who turned it into his own home.

He spent much of his last years here, and after his death, the estate became a shrine to his life and legacy.

Today it still remains an interesting museum, and is still in many ways a shrine to communism.

15. Losiny Ostrov National Park

Losiny Ostrov National Park

Losiny Ostrov National Park is a huge area of protected land that is found right on the edge of Moscow and is even surrounded on several sides by suburbs of the city.

It’s unusual to find such a large national park so close to a capital and it’s easy to spend the day exploring this veritable wilderness of beautiful scenery and plentiful wildlife.

It was built from 1475–1479 by an Italian architect and has served as a wedding and coronation place for great princes, tsars, and emperors of Russia. Whether you’re spending one day in Moscow, or more, safety is an important thing to keep in mind when traveling to a big city! Overall, Moscow is a very safe place to visit. However, it is always recommended that tourists take certain precautions when traveling to a new destination!

The police in Moscow is extremely effective at making the city a safe place to visit and do their best to patrol all of the top Moscow, Russia tourist attractions. However, tourists can still be a target for pickpockets and scammers.

Moscow has a huge flow of tourists, therefore there is a risk for pickpocketing. Simple precautions will help eliminate your chances of being robbed. Stay vigilant, keep your items close to you at all times, and don’t flash your valuables!

If you’re planning a solo Moscow itinerary, you should have no need to worry, as the city is also considered safe for solo travelers, even women. Stay in the populated areas, try and not travel alone late at night, and never accept rides from strangers or taxis without a meter and correct signage.

The threat of natural disasters in Moscow is low, with the exception of severe winters when the temperature can dip below freezing! Bring a good, warm jacket if you visit in Winter.

However, please note that Russian views on homsexuality are far less accepting than those in Western Europe. Likewise, Non-Caucasian travellers may sadly encounter racism in Russia .

Your 48-hour tour guide of Moscow this winter!

pulau redang day trip

9 am – Visit the Red Square

Christmas market on Red Square

Christmas market on Red Square

The first thing that every tourist should do by default is visit the very heart of Moscow – it’s main and most beautiful (which ‘krasnaya’ actually meant in Old Russian) square!

There are several ways to explore it:

  • Take a selfie with Spasskaya Tower
  • Have a warm drink at the Christmas market (which lasts until mid-January)
  • Visit Lenin’s Mausoleum
  • Shop in the gorgeous adjacent GUM department store
  • Visit St. Basil’s Cathedral (and learn that it’s actually several churches under one roof).

11 am – It’s Kremlin time!

Inside the Moscow Kremlin

Inside the Moscow Kremlin

Entering the Kremlin is, actually, a bit of a quest, as it’s a presidential facility with no general access. You need to buy a ticket or, better still, book a guided tour. Inside the Kremlin’s walls, you will find ancient cathedrals, in which Russian tsars used to be crowned and buried, as well as explore the magnificent architecture of the Kremlin that reflects the rich history of the country. And, finally, you could also make a quick visit to the Moscow Kremlin Museums and admire artifacts from various Russian tsarist eras: carriages, thrones, crowns and the most incredible armory and jewelry.

For more information, visit the official website of the Kremlin . It’s open from 10 am to 5 pm (and it’s closed on Thursdays) in winter.

2 pm – Watch the changing of the Guard

The honor guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier

The honor guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier

A very spectacular (and free) thing to do is watch how the honor guard does their ceremonial change at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and the Eternal Flame, situated in Alexander Garden, right next to the Kremlin wall. Every hour, from 8 am to 8 pm, the 1st Company of the Kremlin (Presidential) Regiment performs this rather old and beautiful tradition. But, be warned, it's often overcrowded.

3 pm – Enjoy a green oasis just in the center

Florarium in Zaryadye

Florarium in Zaryadye

Just a few steps from the Red Square, you will find the fabulous Zaryadye park. Opened in 2017, it is designed by renowned American architect bureau ‘Diller Scofidio + Renfro’. You can walk among the very cozy botanical decorations and explore Russia’s climate zones, as each of them is represented in dedicated areas, complete with flora from those zones.

The floating bridge in Zaryadye Park

The floating bridge in Zaryadye Park

The park also has an underground museum, an “ice cave” and a 3D cinema, where you can take part in a virtual adventure – a flight over Moscow! However, the piece de resistance is a floating boomerang bridge over the Moskva River, one of the best places to take a selfie.

You can also grab a quick lunch or relax with a cup of coffee or tea in the park.

7 pm – Arrange a ballet night

The Bolshoi Theater

The Bolshoi Theater

Of course, the most fancy way to finish your day in Moscow would be to go to the ballet at the Bolshoi Theater (in a perfect world, to see ‘The Nutcracker’!). However, getting tickets to the Bolshoi is not an easy task and should be done well in advance of your visit.

But, don’t be upset if you don’t manage to get tickets to the Bolshoi. Moscow has dozens of other options to see a ballet (or opera). No less brilliant performances can be seen in the Stanislavsky and Nemirovich-Danchenko Music Theater or in The State Kremlin Palace (by the way, this is another way to get a quick glimpse inside the Kremlin!).

10:30 pm – Have a late dinner in a fancy restaurant

Dr Zhivago restaurant

Dr Zhivago restaurant

There are not so many other cities with such a big choice of restaurants in a range of tastes and styles. In 2021, the authoritative Michelin guide announced their pick of the best of Moscow’s restaurants. And here’s our guide to all the places with Russian cuisine for any budget. But, if you happen to be in the area of the Bolshoi or Nemirovich-Danchenko Theater, then ‘Dr. Zhivago’ would definitely be a nice option (and it’s open around the clock).

DAY 2

9 am – grab a moscow coffee.

Winter festivities mood in Moscow

Winter festivities mood in Moscow

Moscow is definitely a coffee city! You can find coffee shops on every corner and they all offer a huge range of drinks. Try a ‘raf’ coffee, a sweet, creamy drink that was created in Russia, or dare to pick one of the very unusual offers, like cheese coffee or a Soviet candy style one (check out our coffee guide here ).

10 am – Take a river cruise

Winter boating along the Moskva River

Winter boating along the Moskva River

Another exciting way to explore Moscow is to observe it from the water. Boats cruise along the Moskva River all year round. Most begin their route from the Hotel Ukraine, one of Stalin's ‘Seven Sister’ skyscrapers, and will bring you back to the same spot after passing the medieval Novodevichy Convent, Moscow State University and Luzhniki Stadium, the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour and giant monument to Peter the Great and many other sightseeings.

It’s always at optimum temperature inside the boat, which also has huge panoramic windows. Select boats also offer a full dining experience, so it is also a nice place to have breakfast or lunch.

If you are not a water person, then discover other, unusual sides of Moscow – pick one of the activities we’ve prepared for you here !

1 pm – Visit ‘Russia’ Expo and taste a bunch of Russian regional cuisines

Russia Expo at VDNKh

Russia Expo at VDNKh

Until April 2024, the Soviet-era VDNKh exhibition park is hosting the huge ‘Russia’ expo, with tons of activities and expositions devoted to Russia, its culture, science and nature. Check out our special guide on what to do there!

An entire ‘House of Russian Cuisine’ has been opened at the expo. You will find 15 food stands with flagship dishes from Kamchatka, Siberia, Karelia and other regions of Russia. Imagine trying a range of cuisines and dishes in one place without even having to travel anywhere, be it Altai pelmeni, Tula kalach or Caucasian pies! A perfect place to grab some lunch.

The VDNKh exhibition park is a great place to visit, in general! Its pavilions are the perfect example of Stalinit Empire style architecture and you can almost feel as if you’ve traveled back in time! You will also find several interesting museums in the park – devoted to space exploration, Russian history and even a ‘Special Purpose Garage’, which showcases the various vehicles used by the country’s leaders.

'Sun of Moscow' wheel

'Sun of Moscow' wheel

And, finally, you can ride Europe's tallest panoramic wheel – ‘Sun of Moscow’ – that will give you panoramic views of the city – from a height of 140 meters!

5 pm – Ice skate with view & mulled wine

Ice skating rink on Red Square (GUM department store on the background)

Ice skating rink on Red Square (GUM department store on the background)

Ice skating is one of the most popular and affordable activities in Moscow. There are several great ice skating rinks in picturesque locations that are open all winter long. One of the biggest rinks in Europe is also at the aforementioned VDNKh or you can visit the one in Gorky Park, another very popular Moscow spot, or the small, but fancy rink – right on Red Square!

All the parks offer ice skate rental, so the only things you need are warm clothes, a charged phone to record your memories and a good mood!  Moscow also gets dark at 4:30 pm in winter and hundreds of lights are switched on, turning the city into a giant fairy tale!

A mulled wine with a view

A mulled wine with a view

And, if you are not a sports person, we’ve picked several other unusual activities that you could do in Moscow instead. For example, did you know that there is an entire district of dacha (countryside) houses, just 10 minutes from the center, surrounded by giant new highrises? How about taking a stroll there and feeling the early Soviet atmosphere?

8 pm – Warm up & laugh out loud

After all these outdoor activities, what could be better than a warm cozy bar with a hot drink and nice company? Moscow is a city full of entertainment for all tastes. So, if you know the Russian language or want to practice it, go to a theater or catch a stand-up comedy show. Moscow even has comedy shows in English, where you can hear both Russians speaking fluent English or foreigners (including Brits and Americans) who live in Russia speaking in broken or heavily-accented Russian (Check their show dates on the ‘ Moscow English Comedy ’ Telegram channel)!

11 pm – Finish by partying the night away!

Propaganda club in Moscow

Propaganda club in Moscow

Moscow never sleeps, as you might have heard. Which means there are plenty of bars and nightclubs where you can have a drink (or two or three; be sure to check out how Russians make Black Russian and White Russian cocktails) and chat with incredibly different people. Have fun and don’t miss your flight (or miss it and stay longer in the best city in the world!)!

That's it! See you soon in Moscow
