From Toronto, set sail aboard a luxury French ship  for the vast unspoiled expanses of Canada and the North American coast on a St. Lawrence River cruise. Sail along the shimmering waters of Lake Ontario, then into the St. Lawrence River, a prodigious waterway home to exceptionally beautiful nature.

Call at two emblematic cities: Montreal, famous for its energy and cultural vibrancy, and Quebec, capital of Canada’s Beautiful Province, located on the St Lawrence estuary and founded by Samuel de Champlain in 1608. Watch for beluga whales in Saguenay fjords. Look for birds, seals and cetaceans plus take in the giant limestone formations in a national park reserve near Havre-Saint-Pierre, in the Gulf of Saint Lawrence.

Visit Canada’s first capital, Kingston; the historic steel and mining city of Sydney, Nova Scotia; the charming town of Shelburne, Nova Scotia; and the abundant nature, cultural riches and unique atmosphere of maritime Portland, Maine.

The alternative, shorter, Expedition Along Saint Lawrence conveniently operates round-trip from Montreal, with a charter flight to complete the loop. This route uniquely spends time along Newfoundland and in the peaceful Saint Pierre and Miquelon archipelago. In these distant lands, the hilly horizon is dotted with ponds, the forest blends with the peat bogs, and the coastlines alternate between lagoons, sheer cliffs and mountains that plunge into clear ocean.

The themed Voyage Along The St. Lawrence: From Quebec to The Canadian Maritimes is a unique departure from a collection of Ponant sailings operated in alliance with Smithsonian Journeys. The itinerary follows a similar route with a few unique visits. Enjoy whale watching in Tadoussac National Park, where the mammals gather to feed before winter. Explore Perce, one of the most scenic villages of Quebec, before cruising along the coasts of historic Nova Scotia. And visit the UNESCO World Heritage-listed fishing village of Lunenburg, Nova Scotia. This Ponant voyage in alliance with Smithsonian Journeys uniquely include transfers to and from the ship on embarkation and disembarkation days, talks and discussions aboard ship by world-class experts from Smithsonian Journeys, and a shore excursion or activity in each port of call that encourages guests to embrace the sights, sounds, tastes and smells of the local environment and culture. Look for the themed icon in the Rates and Dates table below.

From Canada to The American East Coast Itinerary

The From Canada to The American East Coast cruise operates from Toronto, Canada to Boston, Massachusetts. Sail the St. Lawrence River, past Montreal and Quebec City, before cruising the Canadian Maritimes, then finish with a visit along New England at Portland, Maine.

Route map of From Canada to The American East Coast St. Lawrence River cruise, from Toronto to Boston, Massachusetts.

The largest city in Canada and capital of the province of Ontario, Toronto fascinates as much by its incredible diversity as by its size. Be sure to visit the CN Tower, the tallest tower in the western hemisphere, as well as the St. Lawrence Market whose stalls reflect the multicultural wealth of this city known as the global city. Not far from there, the historic Distillery District unveils its brick-paved streets imbued with romantic charm and its myriad small restaurants, cafés, boutiques, theaters and art galleries. The Royal Ontario Museum and its impressive collections devoted to the world’s natural and cultural history will also be an unmissable stop during this port of call.

Located at the intersection of the St. Lawrence River, the Rideau Canal and Lake Ontario, Kingston takes pride in having been the first capital of Canada, from 1841 to 1844, before Ottawa. Kingston is often called Limestone City, for the many heritage buildings built from this local stone. Disembark right near the town hall to discover Kingston’s major sights, such as the waterfront and its well-preserved architecture, the farmers’ market and the many museums (PumpHouse – the transportation museum, the Penitentiary Museum, etc.). One not-to-be-missed visit is Fort Henry, a military fort built in the early 19th century to defend this vital shipping route.

Linking the Atlantic Ocean to the Great Lakes region inland, the Saint Lawrence Seaway was inaugurated in 1959, more than 250 years after the initial construction aiming to avoid the rapids obstructing navigation in these parts. This large engineering project, which required four years of huge work, offers a unique sailing experience, punctuated by the passage of the different locks marking out this corridor, which is almost 2,485 miles long.

Famous for its gentle way of life, Montreal, Canada’s second-largest city, is a warm and cosmopolitan metropolis. Situated on the eponymous river island, it is home to a multitude of districts, each as unique as the other. Set off to discover Old Montreal, most of which is declared a historic area, Little Italy, where you’ll be able to stroll around the largest open-air market in North America, or the Golden Square Mile, the luxurious district located on one of the hills of Mount Royal and which has sumptuous Victorian-style residences. Simultaneously marked by the influences of the Old Continent and North-American gigantism, Montreal will never cease to amaze.

The capital of La Belle Province sits at the confluence of the St Charles River and the Gulf of St Lawrence in southeast Canada. Founded in the 17th century, the city still has an encircling wall, a historic civil engineering work and the only one of its kind remaining in North America. Enjoy the postcard-perfect stone houses of Old Quebec and the historic district, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Shopping is a pleasure in pedestrian streets such as Petit-Champlain Street, or relax over a spruce beer seasoned with pine buds. Dufferin Boardwalk, an esplanade near the emblematic Château Frontenac, is the perfect place for views of the river and old city.

The city of Saguenay nestles in a valley through which flows the eponymous river, one of the region’s treasures. As it joins the Saint-Lawrence, the Saguenay River forms a spectacular fjord boasting extraordinarily differing landscapes. From Saguenay, explore the attractive Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean region, which is a paradise for those who love the great outdoors. Combine country walks with boat trips within the various national parks studded throughout this extraordinary natural kingdom.

Make the most of the plethora of services and activities on board during this day at sea. Enjoy a workout class in the fitness center, or a treatment in the spa. Take in lectures or shows, do some shopping in the boutique or meet the ship’s photographers. Visit the ship’s upper deck to admire the spectacle of the waves and perhaps be lucky enough to observe marine species. A truly enchanted interlude, combining comfort, rest and entertainment.

Located on the Northern Shore of Quebec, Havre St Pierre is the gateway to the amazing natural heritage that surrounds it. This Quebecois town provides an excellent base for exploring the string of islands sprinkled off the coast. From Havre St Pierre, visit the Mingan Archipelago National Park Reserve. This is a land forged by the sea and elements, where nature still rules. This chain of islands is renowned for its spectacular limestone formations.

Founded in 1785, Sydney is located in the province of Nova Scotia, on Cape Breton Island. Sydney was very much shaped by the steel industry, since in the early 20th century it became home to the world’s largest steel plants. The city contributed to the allied war effort by becoming a base for the supply convoys bound for Great Britain during the Second World War. Today, tourism has supplanted mining and the Sydney Mines Heritage Museum & Fossil Center makes for an interesting visit. Walkers will enjoy hiking along the lighthouse coastal trail through the wild nature of Cape Breton, with stunning views over the ocean.

At the end of an arm of the Atlantic Ocean, in the Maritime province of Nova Scotia in the southeast of Canada, Shelburne takes you on a journey back in time, between gorgeous lakes and verdant plains. The history of this charming town can be felt through its paved streets lined with beautiful 17th-century buildings. The British flag still flies on some of the houses, as something of a memento of the past. And with reason, since the town was once the stronghold of Loyalists, American colonists who had remained loyal to the British Crown and taken refuge in the region after the American Revolution in 1783. This is just one chapter in the history to be discovered in the town’s famous museum, the Shelburne County Museum.

The former colonial maritime port of Portland, lying in the hollow of Casco Bay, will fascinate you with its abundant nature, cultural riches and unique atmosphere. Let yourself be guided by the salty air of the Atlantic and admire the colorful fishing boats in the old port. A stroll through the paved little streets edged with historical red-brick buildings from the 19th century promises you an extraordinary journey back in time. This city of nature is home to many verdant parks, botanical gardens and other nature reserves where you will find it easy to recharge your batteries and reconnect with the elements.

Nicknamed America’s Walking City, Boston is considered to be the epicenter of American history. Founded in 1630, the tenth largest agglomeration in the United States,  is a pleasure for walkers. To get around, just follow the Freedom Trail circuit that serves most of the tourist sites with its red line traced on the ground. Don’t miss all the delicious local specialities on offer at Quincy Market, like the lobster sandwich, and then take time to explore North End, the Italian quarter. For the more romantic among you, Beacon Hill and the historic quarter, with its absolutely charming cobbled streets, is really worth a look.

Expedition Along Saint Lawrence Itinerary

The Expedition Along Saint Lawrence cruise operates round-trip from Montreal, Canada, starting with a charter flight to embark the ship in Saine Pierre Island, Saint Pierre. Sail along Newfoundland, the Gulf of Saint Lawrence and the St. Lawrence River.

Route map of Expedition along Saint Lawrence cruise, round-trip from Montreal, Canada with a flight to embark Miquelon Island & visits to Newfoundland, Les Escoumins, Saguenay & Quebec.

Start your adventure with a charter flight from Montreal, Canada to Saint Pierre Island, Saint Pierre & Miquelon. Off the Canadian coast, discover Saint Pierre Island, one of the two main islands of the Saint Pierre and Miquelon archipelago, the only French territory in North America. Endowed with a natural harbor, the island, whose name is a reference to the patron saint of fishermen, developed around the fishing industry and still has many traces of its past today. Whale hunting, cod fishing, alcohol smuggling during the Prohibition: all of these memories are still very much alive in the capital, Saint-Pierre. The island is also renowned for the observation of exceptional fauna including, among others, whales, fin whales, dolphins, seals, puffins and petrels.

At the entrance of the Gulf of Saint Lawrence, not far from the Grand Banks of Newfoundland, Miquelon is one of the two main islands of the Saint Pierre and Miquelon archipelago and will delight those with a love of wide open space. Made up of three peninsulas connected by long sand spits, this wild land, famous for being home to France’s only boreal forest, has sublime scenery of hills, dotted with ponds, woods and bogs, and ringed by lagoons and steep cliffs. The rich and varied wildlife is the promise of fine encounters, whether inland, populated with white-tailed deer, snowy owls and bald eagles, or on the coast, home to many sea birds and grey seals.

Standing guard at the mouth of the St. Lawrence River, the Canadian island of Newfoundland, battered by the waters and storms of the North Atlantic, stirs the imagination. Officially discovered by the navigator Jean Cabot in 1497, Newfoundland bears the traces of a Viking occupation around the year 1,000. The island also carries the memory of the Terre-Neuvas, tough cod and whale fishermen from Brittany or the Basque Country. From the 16th century, these seamen would set off for long months on perilous but lucrative fishing trips along the Grand Banks, shoal waters teeming with fish, but where fog and hurricanes reign. These days, the summer is an ideal time of year for whale watching, observing icebergs drifting by from Greenland, and hiking.

Set off in the wake of the discoverers of Quebec during an unprecedented exploration of the north coast of the Gulf of St. Lawrence. Jacques Cartier landed there during his first voyage in 1534, and the fishing trade subsequently attracted many settlers. The first peoples to settle in the region around 9,000 years ago were the Innu and the Naskapi. Today, several communities maintain a nomadic lifestyle close to nature. From Havre-Saint-Pierre, you will be able to discover the Mingan Archipelago, where limestone monoliths sculpted by erosion rise from the waters, forming an enchanting décor. Aboard local boats, the naturalist guides will help you identify the rich marine wildlife and a multitude of birds.

In the St. Lawrence estuary, the small town of Les Escoumins is the nearest inhabited town to Tadoussac. Its pretty bay marks the entrance to the Saguenay–St. Lawrence Marine Park, a marine protected area where some 2,200 different species can be found. The small local boats are allowed to approach the finback whales, humpback whales, belugas and seals in the summer months, as long as they follow the rules regarding distance and speed. Witnessing one of these giant mammals blow and appear on the water’s surface is an exciting, once-in-a-lifetime experience! You can also watch the animals easily from the beautiful granite rocks lining the bay.

Sailing on the Saguenay River is your guarantee of majestic sights in the heart of Quebec. This river, which originates in the Laurentian Highlands of Lac Saint-Jean and reaches the famous Saint-Laurent River, offers unforgettable landscapes to those who cross it. The river’s trajectory moves between cliffs that rise up over 1,640 feet (500 meters) tall. Sculpted during the last ice age, the lower part of the Saguenay forms a fjord whose spectacular beauty will surprise you.

The city of Saguenay nestles in a valley through which flows the eponymous river, one of the region’s treasures. As it joins the Saint-Lawrence, the Saguenay River forms a spectacular fjord boasting extraordinarily differing landscapes. From Saguenay, you can explore the attractive Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean region, which is a paradise for those who love the great outdoors. You can combine country walks with boat trips within the various national parks studded throughout this extraordinary natural kingdom.

The capital of “La Belle Province” sits at the confluence of the St Charles River and the Gulf of St Lawrence in southeast Canada. Founded in the 17th century, the city still has an encircling wall, a historic civil engineering work and the only one of its kind remaining in North America. You will love the postcard-perfect stone houses of Old Quebec, the historic district listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Shopping is a pleasure in pedestrian streets such as Petit-Champlain Street, or you can relax over a spruce beer, seasoned with pine buds. Dufferin Boardwalk, an esplanade near the emblematic Château Frontenac, is the perfect place for views of the river and old city.

Famous for its gentle way of life, Montreal, Canada’s second-largest city, is a warm and cosmopolitan metropolis. Voyage Along the St. Lawrence: From Quebec to the Canadian Maritimes Itinerary

The Voyage Along the St. Lawrence cruise operates from Toronto, Canada to Boston, Massachusetts. Sail the St. Lawrence River, past Montreal and Quebec City, before cruising the Canadian Maritimes, then finish with a visit along New England at Eastport, Maine.

Route map of Voyage Along the St. Lawrence: From Québec to the Canadian Maritimes – with Smithsonian Journeys cruise, from Toronto to Boston, Massachusetts.

Le Champlain

Lake Ontario is the smallest and most easterly of the five Great Lakes of North America, that together form one fifth of all the freshwater on the planet. Enjoy a magnificent setting, enhanced by the Indian summer, for an exceptional voyage on the sparkling waters of this natural treasure, lying 250 feet above sea level. Fed by the waters of Lake Eyrie and the extraordinary Niagara Falls, it flows into the Saint Lawrence River which follows its course. On the border between the United States and Canada, the lake has great cities like Toronto on its shores but also boasts more secret and unspoiled areas, teeming with beaches, forests and small ports in a bucolic atmosphere.

The Quebec village of Tadoussac stands at the confluence of the Saguenay River and the Gulf of Saint-Lawrence, in southeast Canada. The village is bright with multicolored houses nestling in an emerald-green pine forest. From the waterfront, it’s easy to spy the Tadoussac Chapel, thanks to its bright red roof. Not far from this church built of wood, one of the oldest in North America, stands a century-old village holiday resort, Hotel Tadoussac. Treat yourself to tea on the terrace overlooking the shoreline. In addition, at the marine mammal interpretation center, hone your knowledge of the cetaceans that regularly frequent Tadoussac bay.

Those who appreciate the beauty of scenery and geological phenomena will fall under the irresistible spell of Percé, one of the most beautiful villages in Quebec. Apart from the attractions of the town itself, Percé owes its reputation to its proximity to the famous rock of the same name that rises opposite it in the Gulf of Saint Lawrence. Along with the neighboring Bonaventure Island, this rocky outcrop forms a national park famed for its natural, historical and geological heritage. With a choice of hiking, underwater exploration and cultural activities, there’s never a shortage of things to do in this fascinating region.

Although it is the administrative and economic center of the Magdalen Islands archipelago, in the Gulf of Saint Lawrence, the village of Cap-aux-Meules remains a peaceful location and is ideal for exploring preserved nature. Located on the eponymous island, in reference to the sandstone rocks of the cape that were used in the past to make grindstones, the location is above all considered to be the maritime gateway to the archipelago. In this respect, it offers privileged access to many sites renowned for their natural and historic heritage, such as the village of Havre-Aubert which is a member of the Most Beautiful Villages of Quebec.

During your journey at sea, make the most of the many services and activities on board. Treat yourself to a moment of relaxation in the spa or stay in shape in the fitness center. Depending on the season, let yourself be tempted by the swimming pool or a spot of sunbathing. This journey without a port of call will also be an opportunity to enjoy the conferences or shows proposed on board, depending on the activities offered, or to do some shopping in the boutique or to meet the Ponant photographers in their dedicated space. As for lovers of the open sea, they will be able to visit the ship’s upper deck to admire the spectacle of the waves and perhaps be lucky enough to observe marine species. A truly enchanted interlude, combining comfort, rest and entertainment.

Stretching out along the eastern seaboard of Nova Scotia, the picturesque port of Lunenburg will leave an indelible impression. Admire the colonial architecture of this fishing village whilst strolling through the checkerboard streets studded with brightly colored houses. The enchanting charm of the old town has earned it UNESCO World Heritage status. The former naval shipyard town of Lunenburg is where one will also find the replica of the legendary Bluenose schooner, originally built in this port.

At the Canadian border, Eastport is, as its name suggests, the easternmost city in the United States. It is here that, in 1604, the first French people to arrive in the New World settled. Discover their story at the Saint Croix Island International Historic Site. In the late 19th century, this charming town in Maine grew significantly as a result of the development of the canned sardine industry. At the time, the town boasted more than a dozen sardine canneries. The architecture and some mansions from this period live on, affording the town a distinct elegance. One of the attractions of this town is undeniably its proximity to the Old Sow Whirlpool, the largest tidal whirlpool in the Northern Hemisphere, where visitors can watch the birds and marine mammals that come to feed on the nutrients driven up to the surface.

A view of a lighthouse along the Port Lawrence River

Saint Lawrence River Cruising

The nearly 1,200-kilometer (750-mile) stretch of the St. Lawrence River is a lighthouse lover’s paradise, with more than 40 of them lining the Québec portion alone. Quixotic weather and sudden choppy waters account for the building of these historic monuments, such as the one built in 1830 at Pointe-des-Monts and the Phare de Matane, both of which are now small museums.

Centuries-old fishing villages line the mighty waterway that alternates between imposing cliffs and plateaus and broad estuaries filled with fertile islets. Humans have fished the rich river and hunted its tributary lands for some 10,000 years. Much is still not known about the two dozen St. Lawrence Iroquoian tribes that had vanished by the time Québec City founder Samuel de Champlain arrived in the early 17th century. The river was a major entry point for exploring North America, and during the Seven Years' War the British navigated to Québec City to defeat the French at the Plains of Abraham. Today, some 200 miles of the river are called the whale route, along which some 13 resident species thrive, including blue, beluga and right whales.

My 10th cruise but first on a river (priors were QE2, QM2, Carnivan, Royal Caribbean). Absolutely delightful and charming. This is NOT Viking or other chains. This is a one-boat family operation. The pride shows and you are well taken care of (or left alone as one chooses at times) the entire time. 5 day, 4 night cruise up the 1000 Islands: Kingston to Upper Canada Village and back. The rooms are small, which shouldn't be a surprise. Two twins that they made up and turned down daily. Small toilet/shower combo with tons of hot water. Small sink outside the bathroom. Storage to two roller bags or something slightly larger. Don't need much. Attire is shorts and shirts with the occasional light sweater. Our weather (5 days) was pitch perfect. The crew was excellent and took good care of us (we were considered the youngsters). Each room has an attendant, but no room service; they expect you to be upstairs. Our pursor (Trevor) is an old hand and very experienced, as are the other members of the crew. They really aim to please and entertain. Outings were very good, esp. Upper Canada Village, which I found far easier to experience than Williamsburg, and far less crowded. The entertainment was good (average magician) or excellent (musician Roger). No singles on our trip; average age 75+ but spry. All meals were good or excellent. Prime rib on the first night was among the best I've ever had. Pork on 2nd night was good but not remarkable. Good fish. Steak on the last night was very tender but a tad dry. Sitting area up front and in the back. Rarely a crowd. Upper deck is fully exposed, so on sunny days you'll need a hat or umbrella. Guests from several countries and all good people. I return to the pride. It was very evident on all fronts and well earned

This is an excellent cruise through very interesting waters. Our crew was outstanding in every respect, friendly and upbeat even when we were grouchy, and often funny. Lorne, the tour director for 13 years, showed good humor hearing the same stories by the (usually excellent) land excursion guides for the umpteenth time and Jose had learnt in his 19 (!) years on the ship how to cook the perfect rare steak. And to cite just these two doesn't mean that the others were any less wonderful. The evening entertainment included an excellent illusionist and different types of musicians, offering something for almost any taste. The cabins are small, but that's ok for a river cruise where you are outside most of the time. All told, highly recommended.

Treasures of the Moscow Metro: Orange Line stations that honor the Arctic and Baltic

Medvdedkovo.

The interior decoration of Medvedkovo station is devoted to the severe and unforgiving nature of the Russian North. On the walls one sees eight metallic bas-reliefs with a polar bear on an ice floe, the hunt for snow gooses, reindeer sledding and more.

This is one of the most lavishly decorated stations on the Orange Line. The walls have 48 mosaics devoted to Russian cities that surround Moscow, including their coats of arms. Near each mosaic stands the name of the city.

There’s a large colorful mosaic of girls in traditional Russian dresses above the entrance to the platform. The image on the opposite side depicts medieval Russian horsemen and a chronicler. This image is devoted to the ancient epic Slavic poem,   The Tale of Igor's Campaign .

Botanichesky Sad

This station brings one to the largest botanical garden in Europe, and the station’s interior decoration is devoted to the topic of natural beauty. On the walls, one sees metallic bas-reliefs with simple images of flowers, apples and grapes.

Rizhskiy Railway Station is located at this metro stop. From here, trains travel to the Latvian capital. No surprise that the station, which was designed by the Soviet Latvian architects, was dedicated to that Baltic country and its capital, Riga.

The yellow and brown colors epitomize different kinds of amber that is plentiful in the Baltic Sea region. On the columns one sees images related to Latvia: Riga’s port, the Latvian Academy of Science, the Central Market (one of the largest in Europe), Old Riga and more.

Tretyakovskaya

This station leads to the famous State Tretyakov Gallery, the foremost repository of Russian fine art anywhere in the world. The station walls are decorated with the bronze bas-reliefs of Russian artists, sculptors and icon painters. Above the portal on the way to the escalators one sees a large image of the Tretyakov Gallery.

This station brings you to the famous Exhibition of Achievements of National Economy (VDNKH) – one of the world’s largest exhibition centers. During the Soviet period it represented the best industrial achievements of all Soviet Republics. Today, it offers visitors a wide range of activities, from shopping to shows and skating, and other sport activities.

Despite its name, the station is modestly decorated. At the exit one sees a huge modern (1997) ceramic image. Made according to traditions of the Old Russian style of Gzhel, the image depicts the 19 th   century market, as well as several Russian monasteries.

Besides Moscow and St. Petersburg, several other Russian cities have metro systems, and most stations are masterpieces of art and architecture. Find out more about them.

Out to Sea and Overseas: AAA Travel’s Spring Break Trends

Cruises and international trips on the rise; florida tops list of domestic destinations.

aaa disney cruise packages

WASHINGTON, DC (Feb. 26, 2024) – If there’s one place that defines Spring Break, it’s Florida! AAA Travel booking data shows the Sunshine State tops the list of Spring Break destinations this year. Atlantic and Gulf Coast beaches, family-friendly attractions, and cruise ports make Florida a logical choice for travelers seeking fun in the sun.

“Orlando is the top choice for Spring Break travelers, while Fort Lauderdale and Miami are the two most popular domestic cruise ports,” said Paula Twidale, Senior Vice President of AAA Travel. “Many travelers are looking for warm weather, pools and beaches, and outdoor adventures this time of year, and cruise vacations check all those boxes.”

Cruising is off to a splashy start in 2024 with sold-out ships and inaugural sailings, and that strong demand is evident in Spring Break bookings. AAA Travel data shows a 28% increase in cruise bookings for March and April compared to last year, and a 60% percent increase for cruises departing from South Florida.

Good to Know: More travelers are booking cruises farther in advance, which is one of AAA Travel’s cruising trends this year. Many Spring Break cruises have been sold-out for months. Last-minute bookings are possible, but prices may be higher and cabin choices limited. If you miss the boat for Spring Break, AAA Travel suggests booking a summer cruise now before they sell out, especially if you’re eyeing popular destinations like Alaska.

AAA Trip Canvas Tips: For families traveling with teens, check out the best cruise lines for teenagers.

  • Best for Onboard Activities:  ROYAL CARIBBEAN
  • Best for Teen Clubs: CARNIVAL
  • Best for Families with Kids of Different Ages: DISNEY CRUISE LINE
  • Best for Recreational Tournaments: PRINCESS CRUISES
  • Best for Entertainment Options: HOLLAND AMERICA LINE
  • Best For Family Accommodations: CELEBRITY CRUISES

International Spring Break trips are also on the rise compared to last year. AAA data for March and April shows international flight bookings are up 20% and hotel bookings are up 37%.  European cities top the list of most popular destinations: London, Paris, Rome, Dublin, and Amsterdam. “More AAA members are also booking tours for their international Spring Break vacations. They want the convenience, expertise, and peace of mind that guided travel brings.”

Good to Know : Planning ahead is key when traveling internationally, and that includes reserving airport parking well in advance. For peace of mind during your trip, The Parking Spot provides a well-lit, fenced-in parking area with 24-hour staff on premises. As a bonus, select locations offer EV charging and car washes, so you return home to a clean car! The earlier you reserve at The Parking Spot, the more you save, and AAA members receive a discount.

If you plan to drive at your destination, don’t forget to obtain an International Driving Permit (IDP) before your trip. An IDP is a document that translates a valid U.S. driver’s license into several different languages. Most countries highly recommend an IDP and several countries require it. AAA is the only entity in the U.S. authorized by the State Department to issue an IDP.

The 2024 travel season kicks off with Spring Break: Where Tennesseans are heading

aaa disney cruise packages

Gloomy winter weather is on the way out and March 19, the first day of spring, is quickly approaching.

That means longer, sunnier days. It also means crowds of adventurers descending on top tourism destinations — and Tennesseans are eager to travel in 2024.

According to a new AAA travel survey, 85% of state residents will venture out of the state this year and 45% of Tennesseans are likely to travel more than last year. Nearly one in every three Tennesseans has vacation plans over Spring Break, the survey found.

The busiest travel period in 2024? March through July.

"For the Tennesseans planning a Spring Break trip, the top trips planned are to beaches, major cities, theme parks, and national/state parks," said AAA spokesperson Megan Cooper. "Florida is always a popular trip for Tennesseans and it checks a lot of boxes for those looking for the beach, Disney World, or those that are planning on departing on a cruise from one of the Florida ports."

The surge in travel will be felt on the roads and at Nashville International Airport, travel officials said.

Busiest travel days in March

Nashville International officials are preparing for higher-than-normal traffic in the airport and on nearby roads throughout the month.

The busiest days for airline passengers at BNA will be March 8, March 10, March 17 and March 31, according to Nashville International Airport.

"While record-breaking numbers aren’t anticipated, BNA anticipates an uptick in passenger traffic throughout March," said airport spokesperson Erin Thomas.

Airport preparations include increasing staff in parking garages and valet lots, expanding availability in Economy Lot C and coordinating with the Department of Public Safety to manage traffic flow on the busiest days. BNA also offers free parking for up to 30 minutes at terminal garages.

The Transportation Security Administration is adding 25 screening agents to manage the volume of passengers.

Nashville airport officials encourage drivers picking up travelers to use the cell-phone waiting lot at 1415 Murfreesboro Pike instead of clogging roads by circling the terminal.

Busier airlines also means more potential for delays and cancelations, so travelers are encouraged to arrive early and track their flight statuses via airlines and sites like FlightAware.com.

Where is everyone going for Spring Break?

Many Nashville-area travelers will spend their Spring Break in Florida — which, led by Orlando, has numerous Spring Break meccas that fill up in the second week of March.

"Orlando is the top choice for Spring Break travelers, while Fort Lauderdale and Miami are the two most popular domestic cruise ports," said Paula Twidale, senior vice president of AAA Travel.

"Many travelers are looking for warm weather, pools and beaches, and outdoor adventures this time of year, and cruise vacations check all those boxes."

Gulf Coast cities of Destin, Panama City Beach and Clearwater are popular go-to beach trips.

In addition, Americans are flocking to cruise ships this year. Cruise bookings surged 28% for March and April, compared to last year, with a 60% increase in South Florida departures, according to AAA Travel.

Cruising is up and so is global travel. Thirty percent more Americans are flying internationally this year, AAA found.

"The travel season is already off to a hot start in 2024," said AAA Vice President of Travel Debbie Haas. "More AAA members are also booking tours for their international Spring Break vacations."

Cruise lines sailing into 2024 seeing strong demand, AAA says

The cruise industry is riding a wave of strong demand into the new year.

" Travel demand is off to a strong start, which means availability will continue to shrink in the next couple of months," Debbie Haas, vice president of travel for AAA, said in a statement. "So, if you want a specific itinerary, ship or cabin type, act fast or you’ll have to start planning for next year instead."

The cruise industry’s "wave season," the three-month period beginning in January, is underway. AAA said this period is the best time to book a cruise due to discounted pricing, cabin upgrades, drink packages and more.

5 CRAZY TAKEAWAYS FROM THE WORLD'S LARGEST CRUISE LINER ‘ICON OF THE SEAS’

The demand is coming on the heels of what AAA described as "record-breaking booking days" notched by cruise lines in 2023.

In 2023, cruises were projected to collectively see passenger volumes of 31.5 million globally, according to a report from the Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA), a trade association that counts Carnival, Disney Cruise Line, Royal Caribbean and other lines among its members.

READ ON THE FOX BUSINESS APP

"We’ve seen cruise ships already sell out suites and cabins with balconies for various spring and summer itineraries," Haas said.

CLICK HERE TO READ MORE ON FOX BUSINESS

AAA also observed multiple cruise trends, such as an increasing number of weekend cruises, year-round European river cruises and heightened competition for Alaskan cruises.

People "may find more availability and competitive pricing by sailing during the fall and the period between spring break and summer" compared to the peak periods around school holidays, the group said.

U.S. travelers looking to sail to foreign countries may be relieved to hear getting a passport now takes less time. It has decreased to six to eight weeks for processing, according to AAA. It previously took eight to 11 weeks to receive a new passport.

NORWEGIAN CRUISE LINE INTRODUCING TONS OF SOLO ROOMS FOR TRAVELERS

Ocean-going cruises will carry 36 million passengers this year, the CLIA predicted.

The cruise industry is rebounding after facing low passenger counts and restrictions associated with the COVID-19 pandemic that began in early 2020.

If you think Disney is the most magical place on earth, keeping a Disney credit card in your wallet might help you spend more time there. With the card_name , you can earn valuable rewards on your everyday spending that will help make your next family vacation more affordable.

Here’s a look at what this Mickey-branded credit card offers and how it compares to other cash back credit cards in the Chase lineup.

Disney® Premier Visa® Card

Why we like it:, time’s take.

Whether you’re a full-blown Mouseketeer or just planning to take your family to a Disney park one day, the card_name from Chase might be right for you. In addition to fun card art, this rewards credit card offers cash back on all purchases, including the following bonus categories: Streaming services (including Disney+), gas stations, grocery stores, restaurants, and Disney locations in the U.S. The card has a low annual fee, a $300 welcome bonus, and 0% APR financing on select Disney vacation packages.

Rewards redemptions are more limited than from other Chase cash back credit cards, making this a product geared explicitly toward Disney fans. With a short introductory APR period that only applies to vacation packages, the card isn’t the best choice for people looking to consolidate debt or pay off a large purchase over time.

Pros & cons

  • $300 welcome bonus
  • 0% promotional APR financing on select Disney vacation packages
  • Up to 5% cash back rewards on spending
  • $49 annual fee
  • Limited rewards redemption options
  • Highest cash back categories are on streaming services

Who is the card for?

The card_name from Chase is ideal for cardholders looking to maximize their benefits for future Disney trips. In addition to earning bonus rewards on Disney spending, it’s easy to redeem those rewards (in the form of Disney Dollars) toward Disney-related purchases. Plus, if you’re planning a Disney vacation in the future, the card offers special financing for your vacation package.

If you visit Disney regularly, shop online through the Disney store, or are planning a Disney trip in the future, this card can help you save money on upcoming expenses. You can redeem your rewards for airfare, theme-park tickets, Disney merchandise, resort stays, and more. Plus, a promotional 0% APR offer on vacation packages means that you can plan your next family vacation without worrying about finance charges.

The card_name does come with a $49 annual fee, so you’ll want to ensure that you’ll get your money’s worth before you sign up. There’s also a $300 welcome bonus offer (providing you spend $1,000 in the first three months of card ownership), which can easily offset that annual fee.

The card_name provides cardholders with up to 5% back in Disney Reward Dollars on streaming purchases (DisneyPlus.com, Hulu.com, or ESPNPlus.com). You’ll also earn 2% back on gas station, grocery store, restaurant, and U.S. Disney location purchases. Everything else earns 1% back.

You can redeem your rewards in two ways:

  • As a statement credit toward airline travel.
  • Via a Disney Rewards Redemption Card.

A Disney Rewards Redemption Card comes loaded with redeemed Disney Rewards Dollars. You can use the card to purchase most Disney items at Disney locations. You can also use the card to stock up on items at shopDisney.com or for AMC movie tickets when seeing a Disney, Pixar, Star Wars, or Marvel movie. You can get a Disney Rewards Redemption Card as soon as you’ve earned 20 Rewards Dollars, and you can reload the card anytime with at least 10 Rewards Dollars.

Once you’ve loaded your Redemption Card, your Rewards Dollars won’t expire. However, if you don’t load your rewards onto a card, they will expire five years after you earn them.

You can choose to redeem rewards toward airfare instead, with a minimum of 50 Disney Rewards Dollars (equivalent to $50 in an airline statement credit). Simply purchase an airline ticket with your card_name , then request a statement credit for that purchase within 60 days.

Welcome bonus

New cardholders can earn a welcome bonus in the form of a $300 statement credit after spending $1,000 in purchases on the card within the first three months of card ownership. This offer is only available to cardholders who haven’t earned this bonus in the last 24 months.

0% APR vacation financing

Select Disney vacation packages may be eligible for promotional 0% APR financing for up to six months. Rather than paying for your vacation in full, you can pay it off slowly over half a year without incurring any finance charges on the balance.

The financing offer is available for vacation packages booked through Walt Disney Travel Company, Disney Cruise Line, Adventures by Disney Travel Services, Inc., through Disney websites, or select other travel agents and websites. The vacation package must be prepaid and charged to your card before you travel.

Eligible Disney vacation packages include:

  • Disney Resort packages.
  • Adventures by Disney packages.
  • National Geographic Expeditions.
  • Aulani, A Disney Resort & Spa, Ko Olina, Hawai'i vacation packages.
  • Disney Cruise Line packages.

After the six-month promotional APR period ends, any remaining balance is subject to a variable APR ranging from 19.24% to 28.24%.

Disney bundle credit

Use your card_name on DisneyPlus.com, Hulu.com, or ESPNPlus.com, and get up to $14.99 per month back for up to three consecutive months. Credit is available for subscriptions or bundle add-ons.

Use your card on shopDisney.com, Disney retail and outlet stores throughout the U.S., or at select locations in the Disneyland and Walt Disney World Resorts, to save 10% off your total. The discount applies to select merchandise purchases as long as you mention the offer and present your card before paying.

The fine print

As with any credit card, it’s important to understand the fine print before you apply or use the card. This will help you limit your fees and take advantage of all available perks.

The card_name from Chase charges a $49 annual fee, which is not waived the first year. Like any rewards card with an annual fee, make sure you will earn at least enough rewards to cover it.

Interest charges

The card_name has a variable APR of between 19.24% and 28.24%, depending on creditworthiness and other factors. The APR is charged on all purchases if the statement balance isn’t paid in full each month. The only exception would be purchases eligible for the promotional 0% APR vacation package offer, but after that six-month period ends, any remaining balance becomes subject to the APR.

Promotional APR

The card’s promotional APR period can only be applied to eligible Disney vacation packages, and is only available for six months. Unfortunately, there is no introductory APR offer on new purchases or balance transfers.

Rewards redemption

You can only redeem your earned rewards as a statement credit for airline travel or as Disney Rewards Dollars on a requested Rewards Card. Disney Rewards Dollars can be spent on many eligible purchases—including park merchandise, shopDisney.com purchases, in Disney retail stores, and applied to theme-park tickets—but they hold no value outside the Disney umbrella.

Your earned rewards will expire within five years if you fail to redeem them. However, as long as you transfer them to a Redemption Card, those Disney Rewards Dollars will not expire. Just remember that card redemptions are only available once you reach $20—or $50 for airline travel.

Additional hidden perks

Beyond the Disney-specific perks of this card, there are a few other benefits to note.

Cardholders can enjoy a complimentary one-year DashPass. This membership offers unlimited $0 deliveries through DoorDash and Caviar, and reduced service fees for eligible orders.

My Chase Plan

Many Chase credit cards today offer My Chase Plan, a financing option for cardholders who want to spread their card repayment into three to 24 budget-friendly monthly payments. Instead of paying standard finance charges each month, My Chase Plan charges a fixed monthly fee on eligible purchases.

What could be improved

The card_name isn’t designed for the everyday rewards-chaser or someone looking to consolidate debt with a 0% APR balance transfer offer. It’s truly geared toward Disney aficionados who want to enjoy some perks on their passion.

The Mouse rules: The card’s intro_apr_rate,intro_apr_duration offer only benefits Disney vacation planners. You can earn rewards in a number of different categories, but they can be redeemed only toward eligible flights or Disney-related expenses. And the discounts available on this card are limited to eligible Disney purchases.

If you’re a frequent Disney parkgoer, are planning a vacation for the family, or regularly make purchases online or in Disney retail stores, this card might be right for you. But otherwise, the benefits make it subpar for the everyday credit card user.

Card Alternatives

Bottom line.

The card_name from Chase has one audience in mind: those who spend money at Disney. It’s a worthwhile card for anyone planning a Disney trip or who spends a lot of money in the Disney sphere, as it earns great bonus rewards on Disney purchases, and redemptions are mostly limited to Disney Rewards Dollars. If you’re not planning a Disney vacation in the future or don’t plan to spend any money through Disney online or in-store, look elsewhere.

Frequently asked questions (FAQs)

Is card_name hard to get.

While the card_name doesn’t have a published minimum credit score requirement , most Chase credit cards do require Good to Excellent credit to qualify. You’ll also be subject to Chase’s 5/24 rule, making you ineligible for a card if you’ve opened five new accounts from any issuer in the last 24 months.

What is the difference between Disney Visa and card_name ?

While both cards are similar and offer the same six-month 0% APR offer on vacation packages, the Disney Visa has no annual fee and a smaller welcome bonus. Disney Visa cardholders also earn 1% back on all card purchases, while Disney Premier Visa cardholders can earn up to 5% in bonus categories.

Is card_name worth it?

The card_name from Chase is worth considering if you’re planning an upcoming Disney vacation or regularly spend money on Disney-related purchases. If you can meet the minimum spend requirement to earn the $300 welcome bonus (and cancel out the card’s annual fee), it’s an even better offer.

Can I upgrade my Disney Visa to the card_name ?

You can contact Chase card services to request an upgrade from the Disney Visa to the card_name . You’ll be subject to an annual fee with this upgrade but can begin enjoying your new card benefits while still using your old credit card (until the replacement arrives).
