Architecture Tours Of Savannah, GA

architecture tours in savannah ga

Much of Savannah’s charm rests upon the beauty of its historic architecture and the numerous squares of its city plan.

Savannah was famously spared the fate many other Georgia cities suffered during General Sherman’s March to the Sea, and has a rich variety of 19th-century architecture (plus a few 18th-century survivors of the devastating fires that plagued Savannah during its early growth).

Savannah’s landscape architecture and civic design, too – the squares and its extensive urban forest – are as distinctive and remarkable as its assortment of historic buildings.

Local tour guides offer numerous general history walking tours that provide an introduction to the city and its past, but if you have already taken a general tour, or have a special interest in architecture, an architecturally-focused walking tour provides a much more in-depth guide to Savannah’s buildings and landscape than a historical overview tour has time for.

A few of Savannah’s guide companies specialize exclusively in architectural tours – Savannah Rambles (Dirk Hardison) and Architectural Tours of Savannah (Jonathan Stalcup) – drawing upon their professional experience and academic knowledge of architecture and preservation in the city.

The rest of the architecture tours, though their focus is usually on a specific aspect or period of Savannah’s architecture or landscape, are offered by general tour companies.

Overview Architecture Tours Of Savannah

Several tours provide a chronological overview of Savannah’s architectural history from its earliest surviving styles through to the present day.

“Savannah Architecture Ramble” (pet-friendly, 12 max) 2hrs or 5hrs . With Savannah Rambles. Former professional restorationist and architectural consultant Dirk Hardison offers two tours providing a general review of the city’s architecture and the people who shaped its landscape from the colonial era through to the preservation projects of more recent times, geographically focused around the area of the Bull Street squares.

The shorter tour (2 hours) is usually available on Monday, Wednesday and Friday-Saturday mornings. Adults $20, children/students (8-21) $10, young children (0-7) free. Reservations are recommended (either online or call 912-704-8170) but not required.

The longer tour (5 hours, break included) covers roughly twice the distance, and is available fall through spring on Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings. $60 per person. More details

Architecture Tour, 1hr30 . With Architectural Tours of Savannah. SCAD architecture graduate Jonathan Stalcup offers a single, chronological overview tour of Savannah’s main architectural periods and styles, mostly within the more northerly portion of the Historic District.

Tours are available most mornings, $30 per person. Reservations are required, email [email protected] or call 912-604-6354. More details

Savannah’s Mansions & Residential Architecture

Much of Savannah’s notable architecture consists of its historic houses and mansions. You can expect these to be discussed on any general tour, but some center on this topic specifically.

Please note that unless otherwise specified, tours will not enter any of the homes seen, including those that are ordinarily open to the public. For details of visiting Savannah’s historic house museums, see here.

“The Historic Homes Walk” (pet-friendly) 1hr30 . With The Savannah Walks, a general-interest tour company with several guides. This tour focuses on the history of Savannah’s Historic District mansions, their residents and preservation history, and includes a visit to the Harper-Fowlkes House (though please note that if you bring your dog on the rest of the tour, they may not be brought into the house).

Tours are available every morning. Adults $30, children (6-14) $12, young children (0-5) free. Admission to the Harper-Fowlkes House is included in the price. Reservations can be made online. More details

“Savannah Homes” 1hr30 . With Private Walking Tours of Savannah, a general-interest tour company with multiple guides. This private-only tour examines Savannah’s historic residential architecture and how domestic styles changed with the growth and economic development of the city.

Morning and afternoon tours are available daily. $45 per person, 2 person minimum. Reservations are required, either online or call 912-509-2084. More details

Landscape Architecture: Squares & Gardens

The architecture of Savannah’s landscape – its system of 22 squares in particular, but also the effect produced by the Historic District’s many individual domestic gardens – contributes as much to the city’s appeal as does the architecture of its homes and public buildings.

A small number of tours specialize in this landscape history. Please note that unless otherwise specified, no private gardens are entered. The only way to pay a visit to Savannah’s notable privately-owned gardens (excepting those attached to historic house museums ) is to attend either the Savannah Tour of Homes and Gardens or the North of Gaston Street Tour of Hidden Gardens, organized each year in spring.

“Gates and Gardens” (pet-friendly) 1hr30 . With The Savannah Walks, a general-interest tour company with several guides. This tour focuses on the history of Savannah’s historic squares and private gardens.

Early afternoon tours are available daily. Adults $20, children (6-14) $9, young children (0-5) free. Reservations recommended, available online. More details

“Gardens & Historic Homes” 2hrs . With Noble Jones Tours, a general-interest tour company with several guides. This tour examines several of Savannah’s squares and their history, plus the gardens and ironwork of surrounding homes.

Tours are available Monday-Tuesday and Thursday-Saturday, usually in the early afternoon. Additional days may be available seasonally. Adults $30, children (8–14) $15, young children (0-7) free. Reservations are required, call 912-660-6468 or book online. More details

“Garden/Architectural Tour” . With Harriet Meyerhoff, Personalized Tours of Savannah. Private walking tour of Savannah's gardens and architecture. Call 912-234-0014 for inquiries and reservations. More details

Savannah’s Neighborhoods & Period Architecture

Many of Savannah’s neighborhoods have their own distinct architecture, often tied to the history of their development. Today, these neighborhoods are often the target of preservation efforts.

Occasional current tours focus on this neighborhood history. Some additional public tours that venture outside of the Historic District may sometimes be offered, but for the most part, if you want an architectural tour of Savannah’s more outlying neighborhoods, it will have to be self-guided.

“Early Bird Preservation Tour” 1hr40-2hrs . The Davenport House Museum offers seasonally-available tours focused on the Savannah’s preservation history. April tours (Saturdays, 8am) discuss the Historic District’s East Side. May tours (Saturdays, 8am) explore the history of Savannah in the 1820s. $21 per person

Architecture Tours

This announcement is long overdue.  For the past few months, we’ve added  History & Architecture Tours , as a new offering.  These tours have become quite popular, largely due to the excellent guide that conducts the tours.  Ed Pyrch is an accredited architect that provides insights about the intricacies and underlying symbolism of Savannah’ s famous ward design as you stroll through the city under a canopy of urban forest with its historic walls of delightful architecture.  During the tour, Ed will explain how the vibrancy of Oglethorpe’s enlightened Utopian plan worked in the eighteenth century and how it thrives today. You can also expect to discover favorite spots to dine, unique shops, galleries and hidden historic gems. You will find that there’s something for everyone in beautiful Savannah !

Ed’s first visit to Savannah was in 2005 for the Spring Historic District Tour of Homes which benefits the Historic Savannah Foundation .  That trip began a love affair that continues today with the architecture of Savannah and Oglethorpe’s 1733 Plan. After moving to Savannah permanently in 2007, Ed and his wife Kathleen enjoy life in the 2.3 square mile National Landmark Historic District in their “900 Square Feet of Bliss,” a cozy restored 1899 cottage.

As the City of Savannah Architectural Coordinator from 2008 to 2012, he managed design and construction of the city’s capital improvement projects like the Forsyth Park Visitors’ Center, Historic Grayson Stadium and improvements to City Hall.  Today Ed works with his private clients on architectural projects from concept design through construction and obtaining all board approvals in the Historic District.

Ed also enjoys creating fine architectural illustrations such as the Mercer Williams house below.  If you would like to see some of Ed’s art work, you can stop in at Cool Savannah Tours & Gifts at 42 E Bay St in Savannah, or you can shop at our online store .

Mercer .

429 Bull St, Savannah, GA

The Mercer House is a stunning example of Antebellum architecture and a fascinating piece of the city’s history. Built in the late 1800s the home is known for its striking design and as the setting for the famous book and movie, “ Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. “

Designed in 1868 by John S. Norris for General Hugh W. Mercer, a Confederate veteran, the home was designed in the Italianate style and features a distinctive four-story tower, spacious balconies, and a grand entrance hall. The home was built with the latest technology and design elements of the time, including indoor plumbing, gas lighting, and central heating.

After General Mercer’s death, the home was sold and went through several owners before being purchased by Jim Williams, a prominent antique dealer, in 1969. Williams restored the home to its former glory and filled it with a collection of antique furniture, art, and artifacts. He also opened the home to the public for tours and events, making the Mercer House one of the most well-known and popular homes in Savannah.

The Mercer House is perhaps best known for its connection to the book and movie, “ Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil .” The book is based on the story of Jim Williams and his trial for the murder of a young man named Danny Hansford. Quickly rising to best-seller status, the book was later made into a movie in 1997 starring Kevin Spacey and John Cusack. The house was featured prominently in the movie and is now a popular tourist destination for fans of the book and movie.

You can get a glimpse into the home’s history and stunning architecture of the Mercer House through a tour or one of the many events in the home.

Mercer-Williams House in Savannah Georgia

Davenport House

323 E Broughton St, Savannah, GA

The Davenport House, located in Savannah, Georgia, is a Federal-style house that was constructed in 1820. The building was nearly demolished in 1955 but saved as the first project of the Historic Savannah Foundation. The three-story house features nineteenth-century furnishings, ceramics, textiles, and fixtures selected to match Isaiah Davenport’s inventory.

Today, the Davenport House is one of Savannah’s most historic homes and is a popular destination for visitors to the city. You can visit the home’s public museum for tours.

Green-Meldrim House

14 West Macon Street, Savannah, GA

Situated on the corner of Madison Square, this stunning home was built in 1853 and designed by John S. Norris in the Gothic Revival style with beautiful stained-glass windows, and stunning gardens. The Green-Meldrim House has a rich history and has played a significant role in the city’s past, having served as both a hospital and a headquarters for General William T. Sherman during the Civil War .

Over the years, the Green-Meldrim House has undergone several changes in ownership. It was originally built for a British subject named Green, who was residing in Savannah prior to 1854. The house was then purchased by Judge Peter W. Meldrim in 1892, who made it his residence until he sold it to St. Johns Church in 1943, thus ensuring its preservation.

Today, the Green-Meldrim House is open to the public and visitors can take guided tours to explore its many original adornments and learn about its history.

Gingerbread House (The Asendorf House)

1921 Bull St, Savannah, GA

Listed as a historic property in Georgia and included in the Historic Architecture and Landscapes of Georgia collection this three-story southern mansion has maintained its original design for more than 100 years.  Built in 1899 in the Steamboat Gothic style. Today it is considered one of the most outstanding examples of the gingerbread style in the country.  The house was built in 1899 for Cord Asendorf, a German immigrant who purchased the property on Bull Street in 1898. The house was built by the Hawley Construction Company for just $3000, but it is unclear whether the design came from a pattern book or was a whimsical collaboration between Asendorf and Hawley.

While the home is the site of several events each year, there are no tours offered at this time.

Gingerbread House in Savannah Georgia

Sorrel-Weed House

6 W Harris St, Savannah, GA

The Sorrel-Weed House, also known as the Francis Sorrel House, is a historical landmark located in Savannah, Georgia . It is considered one of the finest examples of Greek Revival and Regency architecture in the area and has a rich, deep-south history. The house was built in 1839 by Francis Sorrel, a wealthy merchant and shipping agent, and his business partner, Henry Douglass. Both General Sherman and General Lee were entertained here during the Civil War.

The house has a dark history related to slavery, and it is said that Sorrel and Douglass were involved in the slave trade. Some of the slaves were reportedly mistreated and tortured, leading to numerous ghost sightings and paranormal activities within the house. The haunting stories have given the house the reputation of being one of the most visited haunted houses in America.

Today, the Sorrel-Weed House serves as a museum and is open for guided tours. Visitors can explore the house and learn about its architecture and the history behind the haunted house. With its rich history, unique architecture, and paranormal activities, the Sorrel-Weed House is a must-visit location in Savannah, Georgia .

Harper Fowlkes House

230 Barnard St, Savannah, GA

Sitting just off Orleans Square and built in 1842, the Harper Fowlkes House is an exquisite example of Greek Revival architecture. The house was designed by architect Charles B. Cluskey for local shipping magnate Stephen Gardner]. Gardner, however, only owned the house briefly before being forced to sell it due to financial troubles. The property changed hands several times before being purchased by Alida Harper Fowlkes in 1939 at a Citizens and Southern National Bank auction for $9,000.

The Harper Fowlkes House is known for its impressive architectural features and is now serving as the headquarters for the Society of the Cincinnati in the State of Georgia after Alida Harper-Fowlkes bequeathed the house to the Society in 1985.

It is open to the public for tours, offering visitors a glimpse into the life of a wealthy Savannah family in the mid-19th century.

Juliette Gordon Low Birthplace

10 East Oglethorpe Avenue Savannah, GA

The Juliette Gordon Low Birthplace is a historic home that is the birthplace of the founder of the Girl Scouts of the United States of America (GSUSA), Juliette Gordon Low.

Built in 1821, the house is now a museum dedicated to Low’s life and legacy. Visitors can tour the home learning about her experiences growing up in Savannah and how she went on to create the organization.

Owens-Thomas House & Slave Quarters

124 Abercorn St, Savannah, GA

Built in 1819, the Owens-Thomas House is a stunning example of English Regency architecture. It was designed by British architect William Jay in the early 19th century and features one of the country’s first indoor plumbing systems.

The house itself is one of the best-preserved examples of William Jay’s English Regency-style work in the country and is considered a technological marvel of its time. It features a columned entrance portico, a beautiful cast iron balcony, a winding double staircase, and an indoor bridge.

The Owens-Thomas House & Slave Quarters is a significant historical site that tells the story of the people who lived and worked on the property, both free and enslaved. The addition of the Slave Quarters to the name and tour of the house is an important step in recognizing the often untold and overlooked history of enslaved individuals in America.

The house has undergone conservation and restoration since the 1990s and now includes new interpretive exhibitions as part of the Telfair Museums Slavery and Freedom in Savannah project.

The home played an important role in sparking a movement within the historic home community to change the way history is presented. The addition of the Slave Quarters to the name and tour of the house has helped to uncover the untold history of the enslaved individuals who lived and worked on the property. This change has inspired others to follow suit and consider the inclusion of previously untold stories in their own presentations.

The historic homes of Savannah are a testament to the city’s rich heritage and a fascinating glimpse into the past. From the grandeur of the Antebellum mansions to the charm of the Gingerbread House, these homes offer a unique window into the history and culture of this beautiful city. Whether you’re a fan of history, or architecture, or simply enjoy exploring beautiful homes, touring a few of these homes is a must-do during your Savannah visit.

Telfair Museums offers compelling expressions of visual culture — embracing three unique buildings and three distinct collections that bridge three centuries of art and architecture. The Museum develops awareness, understanding, and appreciation of the arts and serves as a dynamic cultural center connecting people of all ages and backgrounds.

Telfair Museums is the oldest public art museum in the South, founded in 1883 through the bequest of prominent local philanthropist Mary Telfair, who left her home and its furnishings to the Georgia Historical Society to be opened as a museum. Today, Telfair Museums consists of three unique buildings: Telfair Academy, the Owens-Thomas House & Slave Quarters, two National Historic Landmark sites built in the early 19th century, and the contemporary Jepson Center for the Arts.

Designed in neo-classical style by English architect William Jay, Telfair Academy houses 19th- and 20th-century American and European art, including paintings, works on paper, sculpture, and decorative arts. Highlights include fine examples of American Impressionism and Ashcan School Realism, with major paintings by Childe Hassam, Frederick Frieseke, Gari Melchers, Robert Henri, George Bellows, and George Luks. The Telfair Academy is also home to Sylvia Shaw Judson’s iconic  Bird Girl  statue, made famous in the Jack Leigh photograph on the dust jacket of  Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil .

The Owens-Thomas House & Slave Quarters is considered one of the finest examples of English Regency architecture in the country. In addition to the historic house museum and decorative art ranging from the late 18th to the early 19th century, the site includes rare intact urban slave quarters and a lovely parterre garden. The site underwent an award-winning reinterpretation in 2018, providing audiences with a broader understanding of how slavery impacted urban life in and beyond the home.

The Jepson Center, designed by acclaimed architect Moshe Safdie, is devoted to temporary exhibitions and today’s art and home to the Telfair’s Kirk Varnedoe Collection, a cornerstone of the Museum’s contemporary holdings. The collection features works on paper by some of the most pivotal artists of the past 50 years, including Jasper Johns, Chuck Close, Roy Lichtenstein, Jeff Koons, Robert Rauschenberg, Frank Stella, and Richard Avedon. Other contemporary artists include Carrie Mae Weems, Helen Levitt, Sam Gilliam, James Brooks, and many notable Georgia artists. Recent additions to the collection include the 2023 Dr. Walter O. and Linda Evans Collection gift of 30 works of art by leading African American artists.

In 2023, the Museum launched its new five-year Strategic Plan titled  Telfair for All ! which includes major initiatives such as the opening of the new Children’s Art Museum, funding for major exhibitions and acquisitions, the creation of a Visitor Experience and Engagement Department with a new Gallery Host staff, the opening of the new Wildflower Café, housed in the Jepson Center, and the development of Telfair Square and the Telfair Campus, and more.

Telfair Museums’ permanent collection of paintings, works on paper, photography, sculpture, and decorative arts contains over 8,000 objects from America, Europe, and Asia, dating primarily from the 18th to 20th centuries. Telfair provides a range of educational initiatives, including youth and family programming, school tour programs, preplanned field trips for Savannah-Chatham County Public Schools fourth and eighth graders, youth classes, and summer camps. Telfair offers adults a variety of virtual and onground classes and workshops, ranging from drawing and painting classes with established local artists to workshops related to current exhibitions and exhibition opening lectures. Telfair ( www.telfair.org ) welcomes approximately 230,000 visitors each year.
