What to Know

  • Go to the Airport and select I wanna fly! > I wanna visit someone > Search for a friend or Enter a Dodo code .
  • To travel to a new random island, buy a Nook Mile Ticket from Resident Services and use it at the airport.
  • To unlock Harv’s Island, establish three plots of land. After he invites you, choose Visit Harv's Island at the airport.

This article explains how to visit other islands in Animal Crossing: New Horizons. Visiting other islands requires access to the airport, which opens up after completing the game's early stages.

Once you know your Switch friend's island is open, either locally or online, or you have their Dodo code, you can join them at the airport. Here's what to do.

Go to the Airport.

Speak to Orville and select I wanna fly!

Select I wanna visit someone

Choose whether to join a local island or go online.

Local only works if your friend is playing the game nearby physically.

Select either Search for a friend or Enter a Dodo code.

The former looks for friends on your friends list with open islands, while the latter requires you to enter a code given out by the host.

Choose to join the island and visit.

How to Visit Other Islands in Animal Crossing New Horizons

Another way to visit an island in Animal Crossing New Horizons is to use Nook Miles to buy Nook Miles Tickets to a random island. On the island, you can collect resources you may not already have available on your island. Here's how to visit.

Go to the Terminal in the Resident Services building.

Buy a Nook Mile Ticket for 2,000 Nook Miles.

You may need to collect more Nook Miles by completing daily tasks.

Speak to Orville.

Select Use Nook Miles Ticket .

Travel to the new random island.

You can harvest trees and bamboo, collect fruit, collect flowers, and meet new villagers on the island. You can also invite the villagers back to your island.

Once you leave, you will never return to the same island, so don't leave anything essential on the island.

How to Visit Harv’s Island in Animal Crossing New Horizons

Harv's Island unlocks once you have established three plots of land for new villagers on your island. He appears randomly to invite you over. Here's how to visit.

Select Visit Harv's Island .

Select Time for takeoff!

At Harv's Island, players can take photos in his photo studio setup. It's also possible to access an unlimited supply of all your items and fossils within the studio.

When visiting other people's islands, you should follow some polite rules. Here's a brief overview.

  • Don't linger for too long. Like in real life, know when to leave. Don't outstay your welcome. If you've come solely to exchange goods, go once you've done so.
  • Respect the island. Don't trash another player's island by chopping down trees or picking all their flowers. Leave it in as good condition as you found it.
  • Never 'leave quietly.' It's possible to leave an island 'quietly' by pressing the - button to leave, but this can be buggy and cause issues for players, especially if you've just traded items. Leave via the airport to ensure this does not happen.
  • Communicate with the other player. It's friendly to say 'hey' and talk to the other player, as well as potentially leave a gift. After all, you're a visitor to their home!

There is no specific timeframe for Redd's visits, but you can expect to find him wandering about your island once every couple of weeks. Sometimes, you'll hear an announcement that Redd has arrived, while other times, you'll notice his Treasure Trawler and know he's there.

Flick randomly visits islands. He could arrive any day of the year, but he will always leave the next day by 5 a.m. When Flick visits your island, be sure to sell all the bugs you can to him to make as much money as possible.

To  get iron in Animal Crossing , your best bet is to use a shovel or axe to strike rocks you find on your island and hope an iron nugget appears as a resource.

To get a ladder in Animal Crossing , you'll have to progress through Tom Nook's tasks, such as paying off your tent, building your home, building Nook's Cranny, and building a bridge. After accomplishing these tasks, Nook will give you a ladder recipe.

A selection screen of four different island layouts appear, each with different rivers and cliffs

Choosing your your island’s layout is the first step you have to complete in Animal Crossing: New Horizons on the Switch. Timmy and Tommy Nook will present you with four options, but if you don’t like them, you can close out your game, reload it, and try again to find something you like better.

Because the game does have a terraforming tool, choosing your island doesn’t matter much in the long run — but you won’t be able to change your island for several days. This means you should pick something you’re happy with at the beginning.

In this New Horizons guide, we’ll show what to consider when selecting your island.

How to choose a good island

When picking your island out, pay attention to where the rivers and cliffs are. Unlike previous Animal Crossing games, New Horizons has higher cliffs. You’ll be able to access all of these high areas once you get a Vaulting Pole and a Ladder , but you’ll eventually build bridges and ramps to climb cliffs and cross rivers. Adding tons of bridges and ramps can be expensive, though, so keep that in mind.

You cannot move where your Resident Services building is, so make sure you like the placement of it on your island. It will always get placed in a relatively centered spot, so just keep in mind how much space is around it. If you want it to eventually be in the center of your shops or villager homes, it’ll need enough space around it to put other buildings.

Some fish, like carp and tadpole, can only be caught in ponds . Make sure your island has a small body of water (that isn’t a river) so you don’t have to miss out on these fish.

Your airport can also be different colors, and based on our experience, it doesn’t seem that you can change the color. You can get red, green, yellow, and blue airports, but if you’re picky about your island’s colors, reset to get the airport color you want.

Animal crossing new horizons: what to do when visiting friends (& what not to do).

Visiting friends in Animal Crossing New Horizons is not only fun but helpful. This guide will layout the Dos and Don'ts when visiting friends

Animal Crossing New Horizons  allows players to visit each other's islands, but there a certain etiquette that comes along with every visit. This guide will provide players tips on what to do and not do when visiting another player's island.  Animal Crossing New Horizons  is the most social game to exist in the franchise yet. Nintendo allows up to four players to share a single island on one console and permits up to 8 players to visit each other on one person's island. Players can host little parties, exchange items, and even help the host player make decisions on how to improve their island. Players are allowed to visit each other's fully customizable islands just to hang out. This is a great way to meet new players as well.  Animal Crossing New Horizons is a strange game as in when players visit the island, there isn't actually much to do besides sit around, fish, and catch bugs, but that's kind of the point. There's something about  Animal Crossing where playing the game amits this vibe and only players of the series can really understand it. Multiplayer is really about doing nothing together, and in some odd way, its the best for that. Although, there are certain unspoken rules that should be followed when visiting another player's island.  Animal Crossing New Horizons  is a positive game, but when negative players come to taint the experience, it can ruin it for everyone. This guide will help players know what to do and not do when visiting another player's island.

Animal Crossing New Horizons multiplayer feature is added once the player unlocks the airport. The airport can be located at the bottom of each island and can take players to friend's own islands. This unlocks after the first full day in the game and also plays a vital role in attending Nook Tours. Nook Tours are special areas where players can purchase a Nook Ticket to attend an alternate island experience. Here, players can take whatever resource they like without any negative effects on their own island. This is a great way to stockpile materials for crafting and potentially run into fruit the player doesn't have residents to their island. Also, players can meet new villagers on these Nook Tours and invite them over to move onto their own island as a permanent resident. Friends can also meet these new villagers when they come to visit. This is helpful for gathering Nook Miles. Gathering Nook Miles also happens when visiting a friend's island. Want to keep collecting Nook Miles from visiting friends? Don't upset them! This guide will help players with the island etiquette with what to do and not do when visiting friends.

Do: Bring Fruit When Visiting Friends in Animal Crossing New Horizons

In  Animal Crossing New Horizons , the player will begin their island adventure with 1 of 6 fruit, Cherries, Oranges, Coconuts, Peaches, Apples, and Pears. Players can find other fruit by visiting other islands using the Nook Miles, but the best way to go about gathering new fruit is to trade with another player. When heading to another island, bring along your islands resident fruit, the other player might have other fruit they would like to share with you. Fruit from other islands sells for much more than the native fruit from Timmy and Tommy. This is a great way to populate the island with a wide variety of fruit.

Do Not: Take Fruit Without Permission in Animal Crossing New Horizons

It is almost a reflex for players to see a tree with fruit on it to go right ahead and shake the tree. While this is acceptable on the player's own island, this can upset the island owner if they were planning on doing something with this fruit. In most cases, players will respond positively if asked if they can have fruit. The  Animal Crossing community is amongst one of the kindest in all of gaming, so sharing is only second nature to their positive personas.

Do: Bring A Vaulting Pole And Ladder in Animal Crossing New Horizons

This is a perfect act of kindness for new players especially. When new players begin their island, they only have access to very few locations due to lacking the proper tools to explore. Eventually, the player will unlock the ability to craft a vaulting pole, then later a ladder. To help new players begin their journey, why not bring them a vaulting pole and ladder. This will allow them to go around and do every possible thing on their island. It does take a few hours to unlock the vaulting pole and ladder and can be a breaking point if players decide to keep playing or not. Help them out by bringing these helpful items.

Don't: Leave Holes in Animal Crossing New Horizons

Island hosts can add other players to their best friends lists, giving them the ability to dig holes on their island. While players are visiting, they may stumble across a clam buried underground in the beaches. Players can dig these up and turn them into fishing bait. While it is cool to collect items from another player's islands, it is recommended to clean up the holes left behind from digging. This can be a real annoyance to players who want to keep their island clean. Make sure to fill the holes after collecting the item.

Animal Crossing New Horizons  is a game about building a community, not only with the local residents but the ones in the real world too. The island life can be a bit lonely, so going off to visit other friends is the best way to be alone together. There's something special about  Animal Crossing New Horizons that can only be explained by players of the games. It manages to successfully take dozens of hours from players without noticing. It's hard to imagine that players can put hundreds of hours into a game about fishing and catching bugs, but that's still a low bar for playtime.  Animal Crossing New Horizons is one of the most addictive games to release in 2020.

All mystery island types in Animal Crossing: New Horizons

A list of all the mystery islands you can explore in Animal Crossing: New Horizons.

The best gaming Tiktoks in March 2020

These gaming Tiktoks will make you laugh 'til you drop!

In Animal Crossing: New Horizons, you can not only explore your own island but also a variety of mystery islands whenever you purchase a Nook Miles Ticket. To help give you a better idea as to what you can expect, we’ve put together a guide explaining all of the mystery island types in Animal Crossing: New Horizons.

All Mystery Island types in Animal Crossing: New Horizons

The island you call home is not the only island you can explore in Animal Crossing: New Horizons. Whenever you rack up 2,000 Nook Miles you can purchase a Nook Miles Ticket and use it to explore mystery islands. To purchase a Nook Miles Ticket, you’ll first need to head to the NookStop in the Resident Services Center.

Once you’ve redeemed your Nook Miles, take your Nook Miles Ticket down to the Airport and ask to use it. In using it, you’ll be taken to a random island. You never know what island you’re going to land on, but there are a few specific island types that can crop up. Below, we’ve listed all of the mystery island types in Animal Crossing: New Horizons.

UPDATE: If you want to see maps for each mystery island type, Redditor u/trollmz posted a comprehensive image with info from dataminer @_Ninji that features the layout, percentage, and resources for each mystery island as seen below. You can also view it in the original Reddit thread  and in details posted by @_Ninji .

animal crossing island visit reddit

Normal Island

The most frequent mystery island to appear is a “normal” island that boasts all of the same assets and features as your island back home. For example, you’ll find all of the same fish, bugs, native fruit trees, and flowers, nothing new. If you’ve yet to invite new Villagers to your island , you’ll find one random Villager here.

You can also dig up a Fossil and earn an item by shaking the trees. Be sure to pick all the weeds before you shake the trees to ensure nothing gets lost. With the rocks, you can mine for useful resources like iron. If needed, you’ll find a crafting station near the airplane which you can use if your tools break. You can also purchase tools from Wilbur in exchange for Nook Miles.

Any normal island can be turned into a “tarantula island” by following a few basic steps which we’ve outlined in a previous guide .

Hardwood Island

Only trees on this island are hardwood trees but is otherwise a standard island type. Great for farming softwood, hardwood, and wood for crafting.

Bamboo Island

As the name suggests, the bamboo island type is full of bamboo trees. It’s strongly recommended that you dig these trees up, take them back to your island, and plant them in order to have bamboo as an accessible resource. You’ll also find similar resources to the normal island type here including rocks to mine for iron, flowers, bugs, and so on.

Scorpion Island

As noted by dataminers, there are two variants of scorpion island. One has a wealth of bamboo trees, while the other has an "A" shape water pattern at the center along with rocks that can be mined for resources like iron and gold. Keep in mind that, like tarantulas, scorpions can be sold for 8,000 Bells a piece so be sure to take your time and catch as many as you can.

Bamboo island is great because you can dig up bamboo trees and then plant them on your own island in Animal Crossing: New Horizons.

Fruit Island

Similar to the “normal island” type, you’ll sometimes land on a fruit island. It’s referred to as a fruit island by Animal Crossing players because unlike the normal island type, fruit islands contain fruit that you don’t have. For example, if cherries are your native fruit, you may be able to find peaches or pears on this island.

It’s strongly recommended that you dig up these trees and take them back with you to plant on your island as they’ll continue to produce non-native fruit. Like the normal island type, you can find native bugs and fish and flowers, along with a Fossil, random item, and resources like iron should you need them.

Tarantula Island

This island type is infamous as a way to farm Bells. The reason for this is because tarantulas spawn constantly on this island as long as you travel at night (their normal spawn time). On the island, there’s a smaller island in the center and it’s here that you’ll want to be in order to catch tarantulas.

We’ve got a few pointers in our tarantula island guide when it comes to making the process as easy as possible.

Tarantulas sell for 8,000 Bells each so you’ll want to take the time to catch as many as possible before returning to your island. If the Nook’s Cranny shop is closed, you can store the tarantulas in containers by your house by selecting them in your inventory and picking the “place item” option. In the morning, collect the containers, sell the spiders, and profit!

Fish Island Types

Similar to the tarantula island, there are fish island types. For example, one is a "fin" island that spawns rare fish like sharks more frequently. It also boasts a center island shaped like a dorsal fin. Additionally, there are two other "fish island" types that focus on big fish like the Olive Flounder or the Oarfish.

Given that Oarfish sell for 9,000 Bells each, this can be a very profitable island for you to land on. Not to mention the shark spawn island with the Hammerhead Shark selling for 8,000 Bells, the Whale Shark selling for 13,000 Bells, and the Great White Shark selling for 15,000 Bells.

If you're hunting for a fish island, be sure to bring enough fishing rods and fish bait with you just in case you get lucky enough to land on one. You aren't going to want to miss the opportunity to bring home an inventory full of Oarfish, or your very own Great White Shark if you land on "fin" island!

Bell Rock Island

In Animal Crossing: New Horizons, there are two mystery islands where you can farm Bells. What this means is that the rocks on these island types can be mined for Bells rather than rocks, clay, and iron.

You’ll know you’ve landed on bell rock island when you see no center island and a bunch of hardwood trees (plus rocks to mine) or a smaller island in the center with rocks laid out in a circle.

To reach these rocks on this island, you’ll need to smash the rock that blocks the path then vault your way over. Once on the mini island, you’ll want to use the hole trick to get the max eight hits per rock as outlined in our previous guide .

Unlike the roses on your own island, flower island has unique plants for you to collect in Animal Crossing: New Horizons.

Flower Island

Again, this island is like your normal island type with the exception of the flowers and butterflies that linger among them. On this island, you’ll find unique, hybrid flowers that you can’t get on your own island. The same goes for butterflies, with rarer butterflies fluttering by (all those Animal Crossing puns).

We strongly recommend digging up these flowers and taking them back with you to plant on your own island. If you see any valuable butterflies like the blue Emperor Butterfly, be sure to grab them as they’re worth 4,000 Bells each.

Trash Island

This island is similar to the normal island type with all of your native resources on it from bugs to fruit. However, fishing on trash island is an interesting experience as you won’t get fish so much as you’ll get trash. Lots and lots of trash. For crafting, it can be useful to farm a bunch of tires and boots, but overall, this one has to be our least favorite mystery island.

In addition to the mystery islands listed above, there are a few other noteworthy islands that are pretty much your standard island but with some unique layouts.

  • Normal island set in an elaborate spiral design.
  • Normal island set in a "fidget spinner" design.
  • Normal island with a mountain layout.
  • Normal island with several waterfalls.
  • Normal island with a curled center water pattern and increased dragonfly spawns.
  • Normal island with zero bug spawns.

The most common mystery island spawn is the normal island, or normal island variants like spiral island. As previously stated, you can turn normal islands into tarantula islands if you want to farm them for additional profit as long as you visit them at night, which we recommend in order to make the most out of your Nook Miles Ticket (priced at 2,000 Nook Miles per ticket).

Animal Crossing New Horizons: which island layout to choose?

Pick the perfect plot

One early decision could be with you throughout your time with Animal Crossing New Horizons , so you will want to make sure it's the right one for you!

Before you jet off to your deserted island, you'll be faced with a choice: which island should you choose ? Tom Nook has plenty of options for you.

You'll be presented with four different choices of island by the Nook travel agency, though there are actually more options than the four you'll see, as you can see in the screenshot below. The islands you're given to choose between are based on the questions you answer previously and seemingly a random element, but you can 'reroll' your island choice by restarting the process if you wish. Here are all the possible island types we know of, as disseminated by the Animal Crossing community pre-launch.

Cover image for YouTube video

As you can see, the island layouts vary in a number of ways. It's important to note that all islands will have the same basic resources - trees, stones, natural flowers and basic starter buildings like Resident Services and the Airport are always present. What differs is placement - these buildings and resources will appear in different places.

animal crossing island visit reddit

Resident Services and the area that will eventually develop into your town square is marked on the map with the Animal Crossing leaf symbol, and the airport will be on the grey, rocky area directly below it, or near enough to it. Rivers will follow different routes and raised areas of land will be in different places, however. For what it's worth, we picked the island layout in the very bottom right of the image above. That doesn't mean it's necessarily the best one for you, however.

Which is the Best Island Layout?

Okay, so, here comes the kicker, the thing that in your heart of hearts you probably know is coming: in Animal Crossing New Horizons there is no 'best' island layout that you absolutely must choose. In fact, pretty much every island is equal. This isn't a cop-out; let us explain.

As we say above, every island layout has the same basic setup. So that means initially you'll have access to a chunk of the island that features the town square and resident services tent, the airport, a good amount of beach, a bunch of trees and some rocks. This means you'll have everything you need to gather resources to do some crafting. Pretty quickly you'll craft a means to cross over the rivers to unlock another chunk of the island which will give you access to more of the same. Then, later, you'll unlock the means to create a ladder to clamber the inclines.

This is a new sort of 'gated' progression to the earliest stages of Animal Crossing New Horizons, but each island layout has access to the same basic things at each stage, meaning - we reiterate - that there is no 'best' island style. Don't worry about things like the location of rocks, as every few days rocks will shatter under your shovel or axe, at which point a new one will spawn in a new location the next day.

Every island type has everything you need at every stage of the game. We recommend you pick a layout you like and not worry too much about min/maxing your island choice.

animal crossing island visit reddit

Things to consider when choosing an island shape

Okay, so - you understand the above disclaimers. But you still aren't sure what to do with your first island pick. That's okay! Here's what to think about first and foremost.

The main thing you should worry about is the location of Resident Services and the airport ; make sure the layout has them in a position where you'll be comfortable with their location in relation to where you might place your tent, which will later become the plot of your house. That's different for everyone - some might want resident services as close to the middle of the island as possible. Others may want it out of the way. Just be aware that it'll become the central hub of your island life once it becomes more bustling and busy.

Next, consider the river placement when compared to your long term plans . If you want the vast majority of your island's buildings on one landmass rather than several, you'll probably want an island design where the rivers are less intrusive. Others might welcome the ability to break their island up, especially as you can eventually build bridges and reshape rivers - so, again, it's a personal choice.

The good news is that almost everything that you manually place - houses, shops, items and so on - can be moved later on, albeit as a cost. So if you make a mistake or your priorities change, you can rejig. Simple. Similarly, you can also change ledges and rivers when you unlock terraforming tools later on. The bad news is you cannot change the name of your island and it is strictly one island per Nintendo Switch , even if more than one player is playing the game. You'll share that one island - so choose carefully.

Things that won't be impacted by your island choice, but will differ anyway

There are some elements of your island that are random. If you care about them, you can re-roll - by which we mean, you can start over and delete your save to have another shot at what you want. This will take time, however.

The type of fruit that appears on your island is random, for instance, and there will only ever be one kind at the start. That can be remedied by spending Nook Miles to get a plane ticket to visit a randomly-generated island. Get foreign fruit from there, then plant it locally to implant another type of fruit. This is well worth doing, as selling foreign fruit is an easy way to make a lot of money quickly in New Horizons , so invest in upping your inventory space early. You can also coordinate with friends and visit their islands to nab some fruit samples to transplant and swap that way.

Similarly, your island adventure will begin with two animals joining you with tents of their own. Who this is will be random and unique to you, but later in the game, you will have an opportunity to recruit other new animals to the island via elements like the campsite and tapping amiibo.

Do you need Nintendo Switch Online to have friends visit your island in Animal Crossing: New Horizons?

Image of Zack Palm

For those enjoying Animal Crossing: New Horizons, we highly recommend grabbing the Nintendo Online subscription so your Nintendo Switch can access the internet. You will unlock multiple features available in the game, such as being able to invite friends to your island whenever you connect to the internet. Is Nintendo Online required for you to invite friends to your island in Animal Crossing: New Horizons?

Can you invite friends to your island without Nintendo Online?

Regardless if you want to join a friend’s island or invite them to theirs, you will need to a Nintendo Online subscription to play with others in Animal Crossing: New Horizons. It does matter if you and your friend are a good distance away from each other trying to play the game. When you visit your island’s Airport, make sure to choose the Online Play option

However, the exception to this is through local play. You can connect if you and another New Horizons player are on the same network and near each other. The big thing for this is to be relatively close to each other, such as being in the same room. We wouldn’t recommend trying to connect to someone else if you are across the house from each other, but it might work. You can access these functions by visiting your island’s Airport and asking to do Local Play instead of Online Play.

Alternatively, there’s the single-system multiplayer where you can invite another profile on your Nintendo Switch to visit your island. Both profiles will need to be registered to the same Nintendo Switch. This is not a split-screen function. Instead, you and the other players on the same Switch will share a screen, with a leader deciding where you all go on the island and what activities you do. You will need to be in the same room as everyone.

A majority of Animal Crossing: New Horizons players will want to have a Nintendo Online subscription if you’re playing with anyone outside of your house. However, if you live with someone or share the same Nintendo Switch, visiting someone else’s island is possible without purchasing Nintendo Online.

Animal Crossing New Horizons: How to Get Redd to Visit Your Island

Image of Jared O’Neill

The April update for Animal Crossing New Horizons has gone live, and with it comes plenty of new content, adding more longevity to this already-beloved title. One of these new additions is Redd the counterfeiting fox, a series mainstay. But there’s a little legwork required to get him to visit. Here’s our guide on how to get New Horizons’ Redd on your island.

Getting Redd to Visit Your Island in Animal Crossing New Horizons

Animal Crossing New Horizons Redd

Unlike the April update’s other addition, Leif, Redd won’t just start showing up randomly. You’ll need to complete a few tasks before you can access Redd’s treasure trawler and start collecting art.

First up, you’ll want to pop by the Museum and talk to Blathers. He’ll mention that, due to the efforts of your island’s residents, the museum will be able to add an art section. Only one problem though –he needs a piece of art in order to open the section first. Thankfully, once you’ve hit this dialogue, it won’t be long until you can get your hands on some art.

After hearing of the art section, during one of the following days’ announcements, Isabelle might mention that a sketchy character has been seen on the island. At this point, you’ll want to scour the island looking for Redd, who will be wandering around freely. Talk to him to get the next part of the Redd mission started.

Redd’s Treasures

Once you meet Redd wandering around for the first time, he’ll get right to trying to schmooze you up, calling you things like “family” and “cousin.” He’ll then offer you an art piece at an absurdly high price. Call him out for this price, and he’ll drop it to a much more appreciable level. Buy the piece, and you’ll be all set for this bit.

Run it over to Blathers to donate it, and then the next day, your art gallery will be open, and Redd will have moved to the next phase. The day the art section opens up, you’ll find Redd wandering around again. When you speak with him, he’ll tell you about his ship, inviting you aboard and pointing you to your “secret beach” at the north of the island.

Animal Crossing New Horizons Redd Trawler

From this point forwards, Redd’s boat will dock periodically at the secret beach, and offer a wide array of items for sale. Art pieces, furniture and more will all be on sale in Jolly Redd’s Treasure Trawler. As usual, forgeries and fake art pieces are Redd’s go-to trick, but we have a guide to help ensure that you get the real deal .

With that, we’ve covered how to get New Horizons’ Redd to visit your island. Looking for more info about Animal Crossing New Horizons’ April update? Check out our guide to New Horizons’ Leif visits , as well as the Nature Day rewards , right here on Twinfinite.

How to Get a Perfect 5 Star Island Eval Rating

This Animal Crossing: New Horizons guide will lead players through the process of improving your island rating through a 5 star system, and how to increase your island eval rating with tips and tricks for improving your town.

How to Get a Perfect 5 Star Island Evaluation Rating

In Animal Crossing: New Horizons, you can play and customize your island almost any way you want - but for those who want a "perfect" island, you can achieve a 5 star rating for your island town - complete with its own rewards.

Like previous games, your town rating will depend on several factors - from cleanliness to attractive designs - and exterior set pieces will be more important than ever thanks to the customization that New Horizons brings. Read on below to see each way you can be graded, and how we obtained a perfect 5 star island rating.

How to Unlock Island Evaluations

Increasing your island rating - breakdown, tips for getting a 5 star perfect rating, 5 star island rewards.

ACNH Thumb4.jpg

You won't be able to immediately shoot for making your island a perfect haven, as the tools to evaluate your town aren't available at the start. Much of your town's features and tools are locked behind progression gates, and island evals are no exceptions:

  • Help out Tom Nook in building your island's appeal by constructing Nook's Cranny , building your first bridge, and furnishing homes for three incoming villagers . Make sure the resident representative of the island talks to Tom Nook to initiate all of these projects.
  • Once the Resident Services has upgraded to a building with a real town square, assist Tom Nook in trying to entice K.K. Slider to visit your island by building a campground, and then inviting the visiting villager to join your town.
  • Once you are able to reserve a plot for the incoming villager, Tom Nook will notify you that the next stage of his plan involves you building up the island's image - which Isabelle will oversee with Island Eval ratings that can be viewed by speaking to her.

ACNH Campsites.jpg

While the exact metrics for what will tip you over the edge from a 3 or 4 star rating to a 5 star rating are still being worked out, Isabelle will tell you what some of the most important features that every island paradise should have. These include:

  • Exterior Furniture and Items
  • Absence of Weeds and Trash
  • Villager Count

You'll get a bit of wiggle room with some of these features - like having a few weeds on your island, or having just 9 villagers - but for the most part you'll want to be sure you're adhering to Isabelle's tips on what will make your island better.

No two players will likely have the same island layout, nor will they decorate their island the same way - so feel free to customize your island the way you see fit (within reason). You also don't have to pursue a 5 star rating if you don't want to - or continue to keep the rating once you've earned the rewards, just remember that your island vision may clash with what the game wants you to display to increase your rating.

ACNH ShopFlair.jpg

From our tests, we were able to get a perfect 5 star rating on our own island with the following breakdown (note the totals may differ for your own island!):

This was also done with only 9 villagers (and 1 empty plot) currently residing on the island, an Able Sisters Shop , Museum Building, and upgraded Nook's Cranny . In addition, there were 1-3 weeds present on the island at the time of the rating.

ACNH 5Star1.jpg

Since every island is built out differently, there's no one way to achieve a perfect rating - but these tips can help you if you're unsure of what to do next:

  • Natural is only good to a point. Your town rating favors placing items down instead of natural forested areas, so if you're feeling like you have nowhere to expand, you may want to consider leveling some trees to make room for items to place down. Try using trees to border a plaza or line a path while placing other items nearby - and make sure you leave space around them if you need to collect wood or shake the trees.

ACNH FlowerGardens.jpg

  • Flowers tend to run rampant on the cliffs of your island, but you may find it easier to keep track of things by fencing in quadrants so you know where all your flowers are - and if you need to plant more. Fencing can limit how many new flowers can appear around the parents, but at least it looks nice and will help out your rating.

ACNH FrontYards.jpg

  • Give your villagers their own yards! Tom Nook gives you a clue when you're tasked with furnishing new villager homes - placing items around a home can go a long way towards increasing you ratings - so try and fence off areas to the side, behind, or in front of your villager homes, and place flowers and items to give them more personality.
  • Redeem those Nook Miles items. It's a good bet that the bigger items you place, the more they'll help increase your island rating, and Tom Nook sells lots of big items like a Lighthouse or Monster that can be placed pretty much anywhere to help you out.

ACNH Plaza1.jpg

  • Create plazas as centerpieces for your town's different areas by putting down different tiles using the Island Designer . You can border them with different kinds of fencing, and then create different themes like fountains and benches, games and toys, or rest areas.
  • Make use of all the DIY recipes you receive to create themed areas crammed with furniture - like a wooden log campsite full of tables, chairs, and stumps and campfire supplies, or seasonal bamboo zen gardens - as items from a set often go well together.

ACNH BeachDecor.jpg

  • Don't ignore your beaches - place beach chairs and blankets, or volleyball areas, and even crafted items from shells.

ACNH ZenGarden.jpg

  • Check out your island map, and try to make sure each quadrant of your island has at least a few items, fencing, or flowers placed. Even the rocky shores can be a good spot for zen baths, lighthouses, or stone furniture.
  • The terraforming you can do with the Island Designer App can be very enticing, but take care not to go overboard. Too many giant rivers or lakes can take away from real estate that could have been filled with furniture - but you can space out waterfalls with patches of land to place torches or other items.

ACNH MuseumPlaza.jpg

  • Don't forget about excess museum donations - a whole T-Rex skeleton takes up a lot of space and will look great in front of your museum, and will likely boost your rating by a good amount!
  • Don't just leave turnips lying out in the sun - bury them and fence the area off - or stash them in a vacant room in your house.
  • If you feel like you're island has too many trees, remember to chop down money trees after you've harvested bells - otherwise you're going to be planting one tree a day, and it can overwhelm you if you're not paying attention.

ACNH WoodenCamp.jpg

  • Even if you're not feeling creative - don't give up! Visit a friends town or look on social media to get ideas for how other people built their town and placed items - as it can give you ideas with what to do in your empty spaces.
  • Trade items and recipes with friend to expand your catalog, and you'll have more to work with when trying to decorate every part of your island. Just the act of picking up an item another player has dropped will mark it in your catalog, allowing you to buy.

ACNH Musicarea.jpg

  • Villagers love to interact with items - build a musical set with guitars, drums and microphones to entice them to play along (and play K.K. Slider music nearby to get them to sing!)

ACNH 5Star3.jpg

Your efforts to get the best possible island eval rating won't go unrewarded. Keep checking back with Isabelle as you grow your island out until you get the fabled 5-star rank, and she'll have a reward waiting for you:

You'll gain access to a DIY recipe for the Golden Watering Can . This is the only golden tool that can be obtained via this method, and unlike other tools, it has one very important property: It can be used to water Black Roses for a chance that the parent flowers may spawn special Golden Roses - which cannot be obtained any other way.

ACNH LilyValley.jpg

Each day your island continues to have a 5 Star Rating, you can also check around your island to see if a special flower is growing. It's called a Lily of the Valley, and it only grows along the cliffsides of your town. It can be replanted, but it cannot be bred, and will only grow on island with a 5 star rating!

Want to know how to use this dodo code forum?

This is a friendly dodocode/turnips exchange forum. To use this forum you would need to share your ACNH Dodo Code, to allow users to visit your island to have fun and explore the creations and imagination of others.

We want everyone to enjoy the game, and to get excited when the turnip prices are high, so you can get rid of them or when users are doing giveaways on their island, storytelling or playing games.

Commonly asked questions

Experiencing interference.

This usually means that another user is travelling to the island at the same time. Please wait a few minutes and then try to join again.

What does FULL mean?

When you see FULL on our website it means that the island is maxed out which means unless the owner of the island posts their dodo code again, you won't be able to visit that island. We do this because some users want to have only a couple of users on their island.

What games can I create when I have vistors?

Here are a few which we've come up with:

  • Bug off - Requires a timer.
  • Who can catch the biggest fish - Requires a timer
  • Treasure Hunt
  • Island Mazes
  • Hide and Seek
  • Net hitting tag
  • Is this a pitfall seed or an item?

What should I do before opening my island in Animal Crossing: New Horizons?

If you have any items lying around on your island that you don't want visitors to take, make sure you pick them up and store them in your inventory. You could place a fence around these items.

The items which are affected are:

  • Items that have been dropped and not placed. This includes fossils and DYI recipes.
  • All type of fruits (Apple, Cherry, Coconuts, Orange, Peach, Pear), including the fruit still hanging on trees.
  • Star Fragments

Make sure you shake your Hardwood or Cedar Tree so you can get the two daily items that are hidden on them - your visitors could get them before you!

What can visitors do on other Animal Crossing: New Horizons islands?

  • Plant flowers
  • Shake trees
  • Dig fossils
  • Set pitfall traps

An island evaluated with a 5-star rating

Island evaluation is a service in New Horizons offered by Isabelle at Resident Services after the player completes the campsite on the deserted island and the first campsite visitor finishes moving in as a resident. The task force to survey island residents and visitors, Isabelle scores the island's popularity on a scale of 1 to 5 stars.

Increasing the island's star rating unlocks new milestones and rewards. After achieving a 3-star rating for the first time, Tom Nook ends Project K by asking K.K. Slider to hold a concert on the island. K.K.'s concert occurs the next day, or on the day after any pre-scheduled event, after which Tom Nook presents the player with the Island Designer app and K.K. visits the island every Saturday or Sunday (formerly Friday). After achieving a 5-star rating for the first time, Isabelle rewards the player with the DIY recipe for the golden watering can and one lily-of-the-valley spawns on the island every week as long as the rating holds.

Island Evaluations cannot be given on Sundays in August as she takes the day off during the fireworks festival as well as during New Year's Eve when Resident Services are closed.

Ratings and requirements [ ]

To find out your island evaluation score, visit Resident Services and sit at Isabelle's counter*. When she asks you what she can help you with, select "Island evals". Here she tells you your island's star rating, a review from a villager or special character on your island, and tips on how you can improve your island.

The island evaluation system is based on an internal point system that is translated into a simplified rating of 1–5 stars. The star rating values are split into two separate categories: development and scenery. In order to increase your star rating, you must meet certain thresholds in both of these categories.

  • 1 star : The starting rating. 6 villagers or fewer (besides the player), 80 points or fewer in development, or 200 points or fewer in scenery. If you have 6 villagers, what should otherwise be a 2-star rating drops to a 1-star rating.
  • 2 stars : 7+ villagers (including those who have moved away), 80–159 points in development, and 200–269 points in scenery. If you have 7 villagers, what should otherwise be a 3, 4, or 5 star rating drops to a 2-star rating.
  • 3 stars : 8+ villagers, 160–399 points in development, and 270–349 points in scenery.
  • 4 stars : 8+ villagers, 400–664 points in development, and 350–449 points in scenery.
  • 5 stars : The highest rating. 8+ villagers, 665+ points in development, and 450+ points in scenery. In addition, no negative conditions must be met (which otherwise will cap the island at a 4 star rating until rectified).

*Isabelle will not be at the counter during the Fireworks Show , therefore you cannot get your evaluation.

Ways to improve island rating [ ]

Island scenery [ ].

  • Trees are 1 point, and bushes are worth 0.5 points each. The combined sum of these two values cannot exceed 190.
  • Flower Sprouts are 0.5 points each.
  • Flower Buds and Flower stems are 0.7 points each.
  • Adult flowers are 1 point each.
  • Furniture placed is graded on an 8×8-tile basis known as a block.
  • Each unique piece of furniture that is 3×1, 3×2, or 3×3 tile size is 1 point.
  • Furniture points are calculated using the number of furniture placed × 0.25 and if you have more than 10 unique types you get a bonus of the number of types × 0.75.

Island development [ ]

  • The Museum , Nook's Cranny , and Able Sisters are all worth 15 points each.
  • Each bridge and incline is worth 15 points each.
  • If there are fewer than 5 unique types of furniture placed: number of pieces of furniture × 1.
  • If there are 5 to 10 unique types of furniture placed: number of pieces of furniture × 0.5 + number of types of furniture × 0.5.
  • If there are greater than 10 unique types of furniture placed: number of pieces of furniture × 0.25 + number of types of furniture × 0.75.
  • If 6+ of the same item in the block, all extra copies of any item lose 0.5 points each. If 11+ of the same item in the block, extra copies of any item lose 0.75 points each.
  • If the placed furniture is recommended for the outdoors: number of outdoor furniture × 0.5 additional points.
  • The placed furniture costs 2,000–20,000 bells: number of applicable furniture × 1.
  • The placed furniture costs over 20,000 bells: number of applicable furniture × 2.
  • Placed fences are worth 0.2 points each.
  • When there are 100 weeds or fewer on a given island, a bonus of 30 development points are given to the island.
  • Past 100 weeds on a given island, a bonus of (1000 − weeds) / 30 are given to the island.
  • There is a development bonus of 15 if there are nine villagers, and a development bonus of 30 for 10 villagers.

Negative conditions [ ]

If any of these conditions are met, the player's island can achieve no more than 4 stars until they are rectified.

  • If there are 15+ of certain items dropped on the ground, Isabelle reports there are "too many items lying around". Items that are dropped onto furniture as well as the message bottles on the shore penalized the rating in the past.
  • Items the island natively drops—tree branches, stones, shells, and message bottles—and planted and dropped weeds and meteorites are exempt.
  • All other items that come from player interaction of food such as fruit, turnips, bamboo shoots, eggs, candy, and mushrooms, seeds such as packets, acorns, and pine cones, floral droppings such as blossoms, petals, and wasp nests, timber such as wood and bamboo, minerals such as clay, nuggets, and pearls, bells, paper such as DIYs, tickets, and wrapping paper, packages such as presents, fish bait, and medicine, forgotten lost items, clothing, trash, props such as flooring, wallpaper, and handwares, tools, furniture, and fossils must be dropped onto furniture such as a zen cushion, stool, critter case or tank, bench, table, stall, refrigerator, or vending machine to avoid clutter. Presents from balloons and newly-lost items never land on furniture and can't be dropped.
  • Traffic hazard is gauged in the same 8×8-tile divisions as furniture.
  • If 45+ of 64 tiles are covered in the block, Isabelle reports "freely moving around" is important.
  • Buildings, bridges, buried items, rocks, cliffs, rivers, and inclines do not count towards this.
  • If the island has 220+ grown trees (including bamboo), Isabelle reports the "overabundance of trees" and "people getting lost in the woods and fearing for the worst".
  • This can be solved by digging up or cutting down trees until the total number of trees falls below the limit.

Evaluation feedback [ ]

Alongside the island's star rating, Isabelle also reads a feedback statement from one of the respondents to her surveys, usually a special visitor . In the case of feedback for 1-star islands, all statements are provided by only one respondent, Wisp , due to the island's insufficient population and low tourism.

“ I like how there aren't any ghosts around. It's a place where free spirits like me can just be free! ” ― Wisp “ It's great that there isn't too much going on. I hope it'll stay nice and unassuming, like me. ” ― Wisp “ It's a place I've been quietly watching. It's a secret to everybody. I don't want it to be famous. ” ― Wisp

2 stars [ ]

“ I keep hearin' all things should be in moderation, but an island's image is worth workin' hard for, ain't it? Well, me an' my bro'll be backin' you up from behind the scenes, so you better just do your best, capisce? ” ― Resetti “ I've been shipwrecked there a few times, so I consider myself an authority—and I've got ideas! Here's one. I feel like a fella's rescue party might arrive a BIT sooner if that place had more stuff going on. Add some hustle! Add some bustle! Make your island a port of call that'll turn heads and drop anchors. ” ― Gulliver “ It's like when a snowperson is built juuuust right. Sure, it's a good thing to be well made and to feel the love. But I don't know that a snowperson would get the proper attention here. That's my take, anyway. ” ― Snowman

3 stars [ ]

“ (player's island), man... Hearing about how chill it is... I'd go if I had the chance. -K.S. ” ― K.K. Slider (only seen after achieving 3-stars for the first time) “ It's been growing real nice, like a big tree that's getting plenty of love and care. I'll be visiting a lot, tryin' to copy its secret sauce for success for my artists' collective! ” ― Harvey “ Talkin' as one of two birds who've seen EVERYONE come and go from here, this place is goin' places! Keep up the good work! We'd love to need a second plane someday. ” ― Orville “ I look forward to my Sunday visits. When Gram-Gram's knees get better, it'd be swell to bring her with me! ” ― Daisy Mae

4 stars [ ]

“ I started visiting the island because my brother moved here, but I instantly fell in love with the place! Many communities build themselves so big and bright that you can hardly make out a star in the night sky... Not on (player's island)! I shall be a regular visitor to its shores—and skies!—for some time. ” ― Celeste

“ Back in my day, the key to a good life was a low reset rate. Ya feel what I'm gettin' at? What I'm sayin' is, this here (player's island) ya got goin' on? This is one sharp locale! Got that? ” ― Resetti

“ This is a good island, filled with good feet that know the value of a good rug. Visitations are pleasant. ” ― Saharah

5 stars [ ]

“ I've got reel strong feelings for that island. It's SUCH a catch. As soon as I made landfall, I knew I was hooked. Even the scale of the place schools the rest. Plus, everyone there's, like, my chum. Yeah, it's fintastic! Nyuk! ” ― C.J. “ This roiled throne of bugs, this sceptered isle, this hive of majesty... This infested plot, this earth, this terrarium, this (player's island). ” ― Flick “ Number one on the list of islands that snowpeople want to be born on at least once: (player's island)! I can't wait for one of your island residents to roll me up and give me life in this beautiful place! ” ― Snowman “ Number one on the list of islands that snowpeople want to be born on at least once: (player's island)! Next winter, I want someone who lives on this island to roll me up and give me life! ” ― Snowman

  • Flick 's 5-star review parodies a speech about England from the Shakespeare play Richard II.
  • One of Wisp's reviews mentions "It's a secret to everybody", a reference to The Legend of Zelda.
  • There is a misconception that DIY furniture only contributes to scenery/nature points, likely due to the fact that the official companion guide states it.

You can exchange Bells for tools and items in the store or enjoy some nice treats with Rosie in her cozy kitchen. The trees even hold some special surprises, such as fruit or money, like the games! This set also features customizable baseplates that can be swapped around and mixed with other sets.

A lovely little visit

This is one of the first Animal Crossing set released by Lego. The Isabelle's House Visit set comes with Isabelle and Fauna minifigures that can have a nice chat in the house or garden.

  • Isabelle and Fauna minifigures
  • Features can be rearranged

There is nothing quite like a nice little house visit from a good friend, and there are plenty of good friends in the Animal Crossing universe! The Isabelle's House Visit set lets you have the iconic character, Isabelle the Shih Tzu, visit her good friend Fauna the deer's house on a lovely afternoon. You can sit down for a cup of tea in the house, tend to the garden, or shoot down balloons for presents!

Like the other Animal Crossing sets, this one lets you rearrange and customize different features of the house and garden to your liking. It even comes with a famous balloon and present from the games that you can shoot down with a slingshot for a nice surprise. Other details include a cell phone tile, a mailbox with a letter, and an apple tree.

A whole outdoor world to explore!

This Bunnie's Outdoor Activities set by LEGO was one of the first to kick off the Animal Crossing collection, and remains a terrific set to this day. It includes a Bunnie minifigure that you can explore your town with.

  • Bunnie minifigure
  • Customizable baseplates

The world of Animal Crossing is teeming with things to discover, people to meet, and activities to do! The Bunnie's Outdoor Adventure set puts you in control (just like the game) of deciding what you want to do on a free afternoon in your town. The baseplates of the set are customizable too, meaning you can choose never to explore the same area twice! You can even combine this set with the other Animal Crossing sets to expand the exploration and create a full-on Animal Crossing town.

The set comes with tools from the game, like a shovel, a net, an ax, and even a pole vault to let you hop the included river with ease while walking around. A cherry tree drops tasty fruit just like the game, while a campsite located nearby lets you place Bunnie inside comfortably for a little nap. This is a fantastic starting Animal Crossing set that you can expand on in the future!

How many Lego Animal Crossing sets will there be?

There are currently five sets total in the Animal Crossing line of Lego sets. Lego has not confirmed if there will be more in the future, but it seems likely due to the large number of villagers and locations in the Animal Crossing universe.

What's the point of Animal Crossing?

The main goal of the Animal Crossing video games is to grow a town and pay off your home mortgage to Tom Nook by doing various activities around said town. This includes hunting for bugs, fishing for rare fish, digging up treasure and Bells, making friends with other villagers, and countless other activities!
