ABOUT SEE & DO EAT & DRINK STAY BUDGET ADVICE

Travel Insurance

Ormoc is a first class city in the province of Leyte .  It is, however, an independent city therefore it is not subjected to the regulation from the Provincial Government of Leyte.  The second largest city in Leyte in terms of population, Ormoc is the center for commercial, cultural, economic, and transportation in the western part of the province.

The city may not have world class beaches like those in Boracay and El Nido but it has its own beauty and charm that attract those who want to explore off the beaten path and do away with the tourist crowd.  It is blessed with lakes, hot springs, waterfalls, and mountains where one can find rejuvenation and serenity.

Best Time to Visit

It’s best to visit the Philippines during the dry season .  Dry season in the Philippines spans from November through April .  These are the summer months in this country.

Be aware that temperatures and humidity levels are particularly high in April and May .

The best time to be a beach bum and explore the islands is from March to May.

TIP:  This guide recommends that booking for Ormoc City summer trips should be done as early as possible, at least a month before your travel dates, since resorts get fully booked early.

The period from June to October is the rainy (wet) season and is best avoided due to the high possibility of typhoons. The typhoons can not only be destructive, but most tours and activities are cancelled under such circumstances.  Transportation via plane and boat is also seriously impacted as well.  This happens frequently so beware!

This guide recommends traveling to Ormoc City in April-May or in November-December , just before and just after the rainy season. This will likely bring fewer crowds, yet pleasant weather, and is also a great time to score a travel deal.

Suggested Budget

Use the chart below to get an idea of how much to budget daily.  Actual amounts will depend on YOUR travel style. Keep in mind these are daily averages … some days you’ll spend more, some days you’ll spend less. Prices are in USD.

Travel Costs

Accommodation.

A bed in a  hostel  dorm costs from 350 PHP ($7 USD), but smaller dorms can cost from 500 PHP ($10 USD).  For a private double, prices start around 700 PHP ($14 USD).

Most  budget hotels  begin at 700 PHP ($14 USD) per night for a double room and usually include free wifi and breakfast.  For  a three-star hotel , prices begin around 1,400 PHP ($28 USD) per night.    AirBnB  is also widespread throughout the country, with private rooms starting from as little as 500 PHP ($10 USD) per night.  For entire apartments, expect to pay at least 1,400 PHP ($28 USD) per night.

Resorts and luxury accommodations  vary greatly from 1,400 PHP ($28 USD) to 5,000+ PHP ($100+ USD).  However, there are some really nice resorts and luxury accommodations which are surprisingly affordable.

We use and recommend booking online to save money using  HostelWorld ,  Agoda ,  Booking.com , and  AirBnB .

Local food is extremely cheap, with street food costing under 50 PHP ($1USD).  For an inexpensive meal at a local restaurant, prices start around 100 PHP ($2 USD).  For a meal at a mid-range restaurant with drinks and table service, expect to pay from 200 PHP ($4 USD).  Knowing that their target customers are primarily tourists, Western food venues can be pricey compared to Filipino food.  Also, some of the ingredients need to be imported, which contributes to the higher cost. Western food (burgers, pizza, pasta, etc.) is much more expensive but is still relatively affordable at around 200 PHP ($4 USD) for a meal and drink.

Fast food like McDonalds will cost around 200 PHP ($4 USD).  A beer at the bar will cost around 50-100 PHP ($1–2 USD).

A week’s worth of groceries will cost between 300-600 PHP ($6-12 USD) per person.  However, food in this country is so inexpensive, and kitchens & refrigerators are hard to come by, I don’t recommend cooking your meals here since there is plenty of delicious street food to eat at very cheap prices. You won’t make it as good as they do and the food is too delicious to miss!

Transportation

There are many modes of transportation available in the Philippines and each varies greatly.

Public Transportation is cheap.  Bus services on the islands are inexpensive.  Local buses (called jeepneys) are the most common type of transportation in towns and cities. The fare is usually between 7-25 PHP ($.20–.50 USD).

On islands without a bus system, a taxi or tricycle is the only form of transport with fares starting at 50-500 PHP ($1-$10) USD for short trips.

Taxis are everywhere, and they’re very cheap.  Most fares shouldn’t cost you more than 500 PHP ($10 USD) around town.

To get between islands, you’ll need to take a boat or to fly.  There are ferries that connect the island together since they aren’t too far apart but, generally speaking, flights are the most realistic option.

Flights between islands usually cost about 2,000-3500 PHP ($40-70 USD).  However, this isn’t the cheapest way to travel.  It’s only recommended if you have limited time.

We recommend booking online to save money using:  Skysca n ner ,  momondo ,  Kayak ,  kiwi.com .

Attractions & Activities

Most attractions and activities in the Philippines are pretty cheap. Most attractions throughout the area are FREE to enter, though some of the more well known and popular ones cost 5-100 PHP ($.10-$2 USD) to enter.

Depending on the activity, most day tours only cost around 1,000-1,500 PHP ($20-30 USD), oftentimes less.  You have more bargaining power if you go with a group. If you are expecting to do some climbing, remember to pack some warm layers. It gets cold at the top!

Other activities such as Island Hopping, scuba diving, helmet diving, swimming with whale sharks, jungle trekking, canyoning, ATVs, jet skis, wakeboarding, cruises, parasailing, horseback riding, cultural experiences, and tours can cost as much as 1,250-5,000+ PHP ($25-100+ USD).

The Philippines is one of the least expensive places to learn how to scuba dive. Learning to scuba dive usually costs about 15,000-20,000 PHP ($300-400 USD), but often includes FREE accommodation for the duration of the course, which lasts three or four days.

Always book your tours and activities when you arrive.  Stick to travel agents who are selling on the ground. If a travel agent won’t negotiate with you, move on to the next until you find one that will.  Booking tours online is almost always more expensive.

The following is some of our best advice on traveling to Ormoc City.  Learn what you need to know BEFORE you go!

Tips & Hacks

he following are our Top 10 Tips when visiting this destination in the Philippines:

  • Be aware that a tourist VISA is only 30 days. You can extend it upon arrival, or within the first 30 days, for an additional 30 days for a fee of approximately 3,000 pesos.
  • Don’t buy into the fear factor. The Philippines has an unjustified reputation of being a dangerous place. It’s true there are security guards everywhere, but that is to deter theft.
  • Manila is NOT the Philippines. Get outside of the cities to see the real Philippines.
  • Don’t over plan. Boats, buses, and even airplane schedules are notoriously unreliable. Be flexible.
  • Check the weather. The weather varies greatly throughout the Philippines daily.
  • Typhoons can have a huge impact on your plans. Account for this when planning your trip.
  • It’s not cool to raise your voice or show outward frustration in public.
  • Be polite at all times. Realize that your country’s sense of humor may be different from Filipino humor and take this into account when interacting with Filipinos and while in public places.
  • Things move at a slower pace. Accept it … don’t get frustrated … but do account for it.
  • Don’t drink the tap water… but stay hydrated! Save money by buying large bottles (6-10 liters) of water and using it to fill your water bottle or hydration bladder in your backpack.

Money Matters

The Philippines has its own currency called the Philippine Peso. Banks, ATMs, and money-changers can be found on the island. If you are exploring the neighboring islands or provinces, make sure to bring enough cash that will last until the next time you get to an ATM or bank since most tours, transportation, and budget accommodations only accept cash.

Health & Safety

While overall the Philippines is a safe country to visit, as is Ormoc City, you need to use common sense just as you would in any country, especially when traveling, and in a city, town, or area you are unfamiliar with.

Consult your hotel or resort front desk as they are more likely to give you reliable information than a random stranger on the street. Be careful when approaching strangers and selective about who you approach. Always pay attention to your gut feeling and follow it.

Staying Connected

You need to have a local-based SIM card in order to stay connected when in the Philippines. Network giants such as Globe and Smart have SIM cards you can use to make calls, send text messages, and also to connect to the Internet. A SIM card costs around 50 PHP ($1 USD) and usually comes with a FREE load worth 50 PHP ($1 USD). You can buy a card containing a code you can enter on your phone to replenish your load or buy an electronic load that is available almost anywhere in the city.

While you may not have problems with signal strength when in the city, it is not always the case when on islands or in remote areas of a province.  So when arranging for transportation pick up, say when renting a boat to take you to and pick you up from the island, it would be best that you make it clear what time you need to be picked up before the boatman leaves.

Things to Remember

This guide recommends to take note of the following while traveling in Ormoc City or in the Philippines in general.

There is a nationwide ban which prohibits smoking in public places including indoors, the streets, on sidewalks, in restaurants , and on public transportation, requiring smokers to use designated smoking areas.  Selling tobacco to and purchasing from or for minors is also prohibited. Violators are subject to fines (up to 5,000 PHP | $100 USD) and even 4 months in prison.

The minimum legal drinking age is 18.  Alcohol such as beer and hard drinks can easily be bought in grocery and convenience stores.  The most common alcoholic beverage is beer, generally served cold.  Local alcoholic drinks include tuba (coconut wine which is usually very strong) and potent moonshine-like clear liquors made from sugar or fruit.  Imported beer, wine, and name brand hard alcohol are available but expensive.

Drugs are illegal in the Philippines.  Don’t use, buy, or sell any non-prescription drugs while in the Philippines … not even marijuana.  It is considered an especially heinous crime to buy from, for, or sell drugs to children.  The penalties are severe … up to and including death.

Public nudity is illegal in the Philippines and is not tolerated.  Most locals consider it offensive.  There are laws which prohibit provocative and erotic clothing and swimwear, therefore carefully consider your clothings and swimwear choices to make certain they are not too revealing.

Foreigners & Expats

If you are not a Filipino citizen, remember that you are a guest when visiting this country … be certain to act accordingly.  Respect the people, their customs, and the environment and wlidlife. You can be deported and banned … so behave … but have fun and enjoy all that this wonderful destination has to offer.

ORMOC CITY TRAVEL GUIDE | HOTELS, TOURIST SPOTS

Hey there, my fellow Happy Trippers! Let’s dive into the intriguing history of Ormoc City together. Situated in the Western part of Leyte, this vibrant city serves as a bustling transportation hub in the area. It’s fascinating to note that Ormoc City operates independently from the regulations imposed by the province, while still being a part of the Congressional District of Leyte.

Originally known as “Ogmok,” this place has a rich past that dates back to the Spanish colonization era. It provided a safe haven for many people and its fertile plains proved advantageous for cultivating various crops. The early settlers, mostly Malayans, engaged in trade with Chinese, Indonesian, and Javanese merchants, establishing a thriving trading system. However, their peaceful existence was disrupted by the attacks of the notorious Moro pirates. To protect themselves, the settlers developed a warning system using lookout towers to safeguard against potential invasions.

In 1595, Jesuit missionaries arrived, embarking on a mission to introduce Christianity to the settlers. But the city faced turmoil once again in 1634 when Raja Bungsu of Sulu captured 300 Ogmok settlers, following the pirate invasion. Despite their valiant efforts to resist, the settlers tragically fell victim to a devastating massacre due to their limited resources and manpower.

Fast forward to 1950, Ormoc experienced a remarkable resurgence, marked by the construction of various infrastructures. The city witnessed the establishment of hospitals, an airport, factories, and more, setting the stage for its progressive development.

So there you have it, the captivating story behind the growth and resilience of Ormoc City. Stay tuned for more fascinating insights into this wonderful destination. Happy exploring, fellow Happy Trippers!

The city of Ormoc is filled with various fascinating landmarks that highlight the province of Leyte’s rich history and the role it played in history. Here are some of its proudest attractions that have made Ormoc a city of heritage, bridging the province's past to the present.

Puente de la Riena

The "Bridge of the Queen" is considered as the last existing physical structure that symbolizes Spanish colonization of the city. Known as the oldest bridge in the city, its cobblestones are still intact, relics of an age long gone. It was built in the early 1800’s but was completed in 1861. During the Spanish era, the bridge served as a docking area for sailboats, vintas of Chinese, Javans and Indonesians who frequented the island to sell their produce. The bridge is still in use today. It is situated near the twin buildings of the Executive and Legislative branch of the city and beside the Ormoc City Hall.

Veteran’s and Centennial Park

The Veteran’s Park was constructed in early 1990s in honor of the Filipino soldiers who fought for the liberation of Leyte and the Philippines. The Centennial Marker was erected in 1998 to commemorate the 100th year of Philippine independence. One gets a good view of the bay, the port and the plaza from this point. It is a favorite rendezvous for the young and old alike for picnics and leisurely strolls on its verdant lawn. And from here, one can experience the refreshing breeze from the sea and witness the magnificent beauty of the sunset.

As war broke out, it was utilized as one of the headquarters of the Japanese military operations in Leyte and was partially destroyed by the bombings of the famous Battle of Ormoc Bay. Its ruins serve as a symbolic structure of Ormocanons indulgence of World War II.

The graveyard of the victims of the 1991 flash flood is where the biggest cross in the city can be found. Ormoc City brings back Piña Festival

ORMOC CITY—After a two-year hiatus, this city again staged its Piña Festival to help revive its tourism industry as well as promote its world-class pineapples grown in the numerous plantations in this rapidly growing urban center in Leyte province.

Former Ormoc City Mayor Richard Gomez, who presided over the festival’s revival before he relinquished his post, said he was pleased with the turnout, which drew in at least 20,000 people during the culminating activity on June 26, including the performers in this year’s festival.

“This means people would really want to go out of their homes and see that we have a good COVID-19 program here,” said Gomez, who is now the newly elected representative of Leyte’s fourth congressional district.

Gomez has swapped places with his wife, Lucy Torres Gomez, the former congresswoman of the district who is now the mayor of Ormoc.

The last time Ormoc held its Piña Festival was in 2019, barely a year before the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The pandemic prohibited local governments across the country from holding mass gatherings.

Some health protocols and restrictions in Ormoc have already been lifted before the festival was held, as the coronavirus cases in the city had significantly dropped, with not a single new active case reported as the month of June ended.

Presenting a quick-response code before entering establishments and government offices was no longer required.

Wearing a face mask was still required but those who were seen in public without it would not be arrested.

While cases of COVID-19 in Ormoc have decreased, Gomez reminded residents to continue following the health protocols.

“We are still in the midst of a pandemic. You have to take care of yourself,” he said.

Piña Festival was one of the programs of the local government to help promote the pineapple industry in the city.

Ormoc is known to produce one of the country’s sweetest pineapples that are being exported to other countries, mainly in the Middle East.

At least 500 hectares of land in Ormoc are dedicated to growing pineapple, with over 100 tons of the fruit harvested every year.

Ormoc City  is not exactly a major tourist destination in the Philippines, but it is a growing agricultural and industrial center. The city is located on the western end of the province of Leyte in the Visayan Region of the Philippines. Ormoc is also known for its excellence with regard to its educational institutions. It is more of a cultural, commercial, and economic center of western Leyte.

A Brief History of Ormoc City

The territory we know today as Ormoc already had a small settlement even before Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan reached the Philippines in 1521, particularly the province of Leyte. The early settlers were the people known as the Ogmok. Ogmok literally meant a lowland plain depression. Incidentally, this was also the name of the spring in heart of the area.

During the Spanish era, the fertile plains of Ormoc attracted migrants from neighboring islands. It is also evident that the early settlers already had trading relations with traders from Java, China, and Indonesia. The entire province came under a civil government when Americans drove out the Spanish in 1901. This form of civil government allowed the locals to govern their own affairs independently.

May 25, 1942 was the date of the Japanese occupation of the entire province of Leyte, including Ormoc. This occupation was short lived since it only lasted for three years. Ormoc finally attained the status of a city in 1947. Today, the city is moving forward as an economic hub in the region

Where To Go:

The Pineapple Plantation

Ormoc City is known as the pineapple capital of the Philippines, and you can see these delicious fruits being produced at the Pineapple Plantation. Located north of Barangay Hibunawon, the site occupies over 200 hectares of land. Here is the home of the Queen Pineapple, which is widely accepted to be the most sumptuous in the entire country. Already a favorite among locals, the fruit is also becoming one of the Leyte’s most sought after exports, helping the industry grow in the process.

Another crowd drawer in Ormoc City is Lake Danao, probably the most well known body of water in the province. Today, Lake Danao is known for its various boat rides, which can take tourists on a tour across the crystal waters, and there is also a floating restaurant that is always packed with people. Over 1.8 miles (3 km) long, legend has it that a sea creature (giant eel) swims in the deep.

The Rainforests

Most tour packages in Ormoc City and Leyte include a trek to its beautiful rainforests. If you avail of these, make sure they include a visit to Danao, Mahagnao, Casudsu-Ran and Malagsum. A tour of these rainforests/lakes gives you a glimpse of not just the shrubs, the trees and the hills, but also the Guinaban Falls. There are also plenty of exotic animals and plants, from monkeys, deer, boars, and a dazzling array of flowers and orchids. The mountainside, on the other hand, provides you with a view of Samar Island.

Tongonan Hotsprings National Park

Part of Ormoc City’s economic strength lies in its ability to provide geothermal energy, and this park is where most of these plants are located. This valley, while providing energy, is still under development, and when completed is expected to be more than able to supply the needs of the city and the province. The visitor to the Tongonan Hotsprings National Park will also benefit from the well maintained environment.

The Leyte Golf and Country Club

If you want to take a break from trekking and improve on your swing, the Leyte Golf and Country Club is the perfect area to work on your game. The resort occupies more than 70 hectares of beautiful greens, coconut and palm trees providing a beautiful contrast to the blue skies. The place is serene enough, yet because it is situated in the midst of Ormoc, you can easily get back to the city anytime. The reverse is of course, also true, so if you feel like getting away from it all, the resort in only some 4 miles (7 km) from the hub of the city.

Centennial Park

Any well designed city provides for a park, and Ormoc’s Centennial Park is comparable with the finest in the country. Although the park is often filled with people, it still manages to maintain a quiet atmosphere. It is a perfect site for the gathering of friends and family, or just laying back, and watching the day go by.

The Leyte Mountain Trek

There are lots of areas that you can go trekking, but the Leyte Mountain Trail is always at the top of the backpackers’ list. The length of the trail runs for approximately 26 miles (40 km), beginning at the Mahagnao Volcano Natural Park and ending at the Danao Lake Natural Park in Ormoc City. As you begin the journey you can enjoy the views from the Mahagnao Park, the rugged landscapes, with varied flora and animals as your companion.

How To Get There:

If you traveling via plane, there are direct flights available from Manila, Clark, and Cebu. You would have to check with the airlines frequently because some flights get cancelled to moved.

If you are traveling via land, it will take you about 24-hours to get to Ormoc. Though it is a long drive, you can pass by through several tourist attractions including the perfectly shaped, Mayon Volcano.

If you are traveling via land, there are fastcrafts and ferry boats available that goes straight to Ormoc.

Cybersecurity is everybody's concern, especially as digitalization penetrates further into governance, business operations, and everyday life. In July 2023, the Local Government Unit (LGU) of Ormoc City warmly welcomed the opportunity to collaborate with faculty and students of the AIM Master in Cybersecurity (MCS) program to enhance cybersecurity awareness in the community.

Notably, Richard Gomez, the representative for Leyte's 4th district, and Lucy Torres-Gomez, the mayor of Ormoc City, are nationally acclaimed local management leaders. The city's progressive vision to become a "Smart Green City of the Future" has won over many tourists, including the AIM-MCS2024 Capstone team.

Good governance, which encompasses a variety of factors, is widely regarded as a crucial element in promoting social and economic progress. In the constantly changing landscape of the digital world, protecting against cyber security risks is an ongoing challenge. To defend against these risks, it is crucial to follow a series of steps. These steps include staying informed and current on the latest threats, implementing strong password practices, utilizing multi-factor authentication, regularly backing up essential data, developing and implementing comprehensive security policies, and periodically testing and updating security measures. By following these steps, individuals and organizations can better safeguard themselves against the ever-evolving cyber security threats. It is essential to recognize the global nature of the task at hand to achieve this grand ambition.

To implement a proactive strategy in addressing cyber security concerns, the Local Government Unit (LGU) of Ormoc City has officially supported undertaking a capstone research project by AIM-MCS students. This study investigates the current state of cybersecurity knowledge among small enterprises in Ormoc City. On September 22, 2023, at Sutuwaki Restaurant, Ormoc City, the team of this author and fellow MCS 2024 cohort, Fjordan Allego, piloted a "Cybersecurity For MSMEs Seminar" with Mr. Mario Demarillas, also an MCS 2024 cohort, as the guest speaker for the event.

Dr. Gregorio Yrastorza III, a member of the City Council, spoke on behalf of Mayor Lucy Torres-Gomez. Attorney Donna Villa Gaspan-Cerna introduced the Capstone Project, which is focused on micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) in the hospitality industry in Ormoc City. After that, Fjordan Allego assisted attendees in filling out a survey. Mr. Greggy Franz Perez, a representative from Sangfor Philippines, and Mr. Jefferson Pagaduan, a VST-ECS/Trend Micro representative, made hybrid presentations and awarded raffle winners with prizes. In this talk, Mr. Mario Demarillas, CISO of Exceture, Inc., Best CISO awardee-Information Security Officers Group (ISOG), and former President of the ISACA Manila Chapter, shared his knowledge and expertise with the audience on the importance of good cybersecurity hygiene from the perspective of working with small company customers. Participants answered survey questions and signed consent papers. Attorney Christine Lovely Red-Allego hosted the seminar described above.

Most company executives and reps know very little about cybersecurity. Many people have heard about cybersecurity problems via media and online sources. Some companies understood the significance of including such considerations in their daily procedures. While many people took part, many needed guidance about how it would influence their companies or, more broadly, the city's economy.

The Capstone research team committed to sharing the findings of the said survey with the LGU-Ormoc to bridge the gap in local policies respecting cybersecurity risk management. Researchers aimed to learn more about the perspectives of hotel owners and managers in Ormoc City on investing in cybersecurity measures to safeguard their businesses from cyber-attacks and hazards. The emergence of the tourist industry makes it likely that this sector of MSMEs would be hit most by the rapid speed of digitalization.

With 74 hospitality industry professionals present, the event was a resounding success. Most of those who attended the seminar wanted to see more events like it held to raise awareness about cybersecurity and how it affects small companies.

We are truly grateful for the full-blast support of the local administration, specifically the BPLO-Ormoc head, Mr. Noel Mendoza, his team leader, Ms. Cheryl Gallo, and the rest of the LGU-Ormoc employees who assisted the AIM-MCS Capstone team.

The Master in Cybersecurity Program of the Asian Institute of Management offers an 18-month curriculum carefully designed to balance cybersecurity's technical and managerial aspects. Asian Institute of Management is accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB).
