Tove Lo Explores the Intricacies of Her Femininity on Upcoming Fifth Album ‘Dirt Femme’

By Tomás Mier

Get ready to go from Sunshine Kitty to Dirt Femme. A new album from Tove Lo is on the way, Rolling Stone can exclusively announce — and the Swedish pop singer is ready to take listeners on a “beautiful, sexy journey” that explores the intricacies and nuances of her femininity. As she releases her ballad “True Romance” Tuesday, Lo reveals that she’s dropping her fifth studio album on her own record label as she breaks down what’s to come with the new era.

“It’s going to be a very beautiful visual and sonical journey. Is sonical even a word? No,” Lo tells  Rolling Stone with a laugh. “I love to create worlds, and it’s definitely going to feel like you’re entering this new world of Dirt Femme .”

After “feeling very empty” during the pandemic, Lo took time for introspection on “the 10-year whirlwind that has been my career and my life.” Having time away from the spotlight — after releasing her LP Sunshine Kitty the year prior — allowed her to analyze her music career but also her relationship with femininity as a “pansexual woman married to a straight man.” (Lo shared that she had married longtime partner Charlie Twaddle in 2020, and came out as bisexual in 2016.)

“I’ve looked back on how my femininity has helped and hurt me throughout my life,” she says. “And I think the album has that tone to it. I’m bringing up all these questions and feelings and emotions that don’t necessarily have answers to them. It’s just more my current place of wonder.”

In a statement about the LP, she adds, “I believe masculine and feminine lives on a spectrum in all humans. There are so many more interesting nuances than most people wanna accept. Songs on this album will contradict each other, will probably upset some of you, will make you wanna dance, cry, fuck, and drive your car really, really fast.”

Dirt Femme ’s album artwork — which sees Lo wearing a metallic robot-scorpion stinger attached to her back and her vagina-inspired logo on the side of her hip — evokes that dramatic, visual effect in Lo’s storytelling. (It’s also a nod to her astrological sign.)

“I just love the fact that the female scorpion eats the male scorpion after mating,” she says with a giggle. “I’m in a very lovely relationship now where we have a good balance of crazy between us. But I get told that I draw people in and I consume them.”

“It’s really hard to explain it in words,” she adds when asked to describe the album and how it connects to its artwork. “I think when you see and hear it, it’ll make sense.” But part of that exploration into her femininity is featured on “Suburbia,” a track that she says will be “very touchy for some people.”

“It’s about never wanting marriage, not wanting children, and not feeling like that’s a life that I want. But then like, ‘What if I do?’ “ says Lo. “All of my friends around me have kids — babies are adorable and I’m so happy for my friends — but whenever I say ‘I still don’t know if I want kids,’ they take it so personally and get really offended by me saying that.”

She adds, “Having a kid is a personal choice, isn’t it? When you live in a very woke bubble that I’m in with my friends who live very different lives, it’s not a big deal. But as soon as I move slightly outside of that, there’s a judgment cloud if you choose not to have children.”

Also on the record are two songs featuring SG Lewis: “Call on Me” and “Pineapple Slice,” which she describes as “the ‘Disco Tits’ of this record.” (The  Blue Lips song is a fan favorite.) “We just really click. I just love writing with him,” Lo says of Lewis. “Actually, ‘Pineapple Slice’ is a mix between ‘Bitches’ and ‘Disco Tits.’ The lyrics are very dirty, and over a really sexy beat.”

And there’s also “2 Die 4,” a track she recently performed during one-off shows in Los Angeles and New York City. The earworm is a nostalgic wet dream as it samples Crazy Frog’s 2005 reimagining of Hot Butter’s “Popcorn.”

After releasing lead single “ No One Dies From Love ,” which featured a dance-ready Eighties feel, last month, Lo takes fans into unexplored territory with “True Romance,” which dropped Tuesday.

“As much I love a pop banger, it’s really fun to get to do something this dramatic,” she says about the song she recorded with her roommate, TimFromTheHouse , in a single take. “I wanted to make something that tells a story all the way through. That’s something you rarely see in pop music, and I feel like it’s fun to break sometimes.”

The song was inspired by Lo watching one of her favorite films, 1993’s Tarantino-scripted True Romance , and using some of the film’s plot points to tell a new story. “It started with this beautiful heartbeat pulse with these emotional swells. I was just improvising melodies,” she says. “It’s one of the most destructive, beautiful, overdramatic spins-out-of-control love stories.” “Take a life for me/You know I’d do it instantly/In danger of a true romance,” she sings on the raw track, which hears her voice crack and break at several points. “We are meant to be/I’d die for love and loyalty.”

Jxdn 'Went to Hell and Back' and Now Has an Album to Prove It

Don toliver sings to kali uchis and their newborn on 'deep in the water', flo gets a 'bit naughty' and sensual in 'walk like this' video.

“The last couple of years we just felt the presence of death in a really sad way, and that impacted me maybe a lot more than I thought it did,” she says. “There’s a lot of that, like, ‘What if all this just goes away? What if I lose this?’ on the album.”

The project is the first where Lo has complete creative control over every aspect of her music as she debuts the project under her own record label, Pretty Swede Records, after spending the majority of her career signed to Universal Music, “which did wonders for me.”

“It was crucial for me to break as an international artist from Sweden. It made it possible for me to build this incredible platform of amazing, dedicated fans that I now have,” she says. “But I’m so particular about how I want everything to look and feel and sound. I like to make these intricate stories that don’t help the algorithm and maybe aren’t the most commercial way to do pop releases and how you put out pop music.”

She adds, “I want to feel like I’m in full control of where to spend money, and also get most of the money. For someone who really likes to be in control and has a very particular way of doing this, I was lucky to have a label that was like, ‘We don’t really get what you do, but put it out.’ I was very lucky in that way, but I just felt like I want more control than that.”

Dirt Femme is out on October 14.

Review | Tove Lo’s Dirt Femme Tour

Swedish singer-songwriter Tove Lo electrifies the last stop on her Dirt Femme tour with infectious hooks, venue nostalgia, and kissing.

tove lo dirt femme tour setlist

Tove Lo, one of Sweden’s finest pop exports, played the last leg of her Dirt Femme Tour this past Tuesday. Best known for her breakout hit “Habits” in 2014, she’s carved a lane of moody tunes that chronicle topics with a specific, and unique, perspective. In “Habits,” the intro says, “I eat my dinner in my bathtub, Then I go to sex clubs.” Lo’s lyrics cover sex, drugs, and more sex, but in a way that is straight to the point and not glamorous at all. Her depictions of these topics are often fueled with the frustration that comes with them, the moment after when you feel like you’re withering away, or, as I like to call them, “bathroom floor moments.” Somehow, she makes you feel her pain without sacrificing catchy, infectious pop hooks.

Lo walks out after the rest of her band sets up, and starts the night with “Pineapple Slice.” Concertgoers cheer with delight when she enters, and scream along with every word. In front of a three-piece band, Lo donned a futuristic look, complete with a shiny bodysuit and metallic shoulder pads. Lo also sported a long, rope-like ponytail that flew through the air as she spun it to the beat of the song, tethering the energy of the crowd into her orbit. Highlights include “disco tits,” “Talking Body,” and “True Disaster.” Surprisingly, the song that generated the most sing-alongs was “Cool Girl,” which was the lead single off of Lo’s sophomore LP Lady Wood, which didn’t quite live up to the massive success of her debut release Queen of the Clouds.

Something fascinating about Lo, and the reason why I became a deeper fan later in her career, is that she got big very early … and then her music became less mainstream. The songs got darker, the dialogue became more frank. In “Suburbia,” Lo talks about how, once she got married, she realized she didn’t want to be bored and relegated to “routines and lies.” Funnily enough, she then invited her spouse to the front of the stage to kiss her in front of the crowd for a photo.

Lo shows another side of her songwriting in “Glad He’s Gone,” a personal favorite, appearing halfway through the set. Lo asks, “did you give in to his ego? Just to give a little confidence…” then proceeds to lament “no tears for that sucker. Only one dick, that’s a bummer,” mixing paranoid vulnerability with humor. Her ability to take you through a plethora of emotions in the show from every angle, from horniness to boredom to pain, is a testament to her writing skills. It’s also a trait that often gets discredited in female acts who sing about more sexually explicit subjects, and one that Lo should be getting a lot more commercial credit for.

Lo starts to get emotional and shares how bittersweet it is that it’s the last show of the tour, and how The Observatory (in Santa Ana) means a lot to her. She says that she played it on her Queen of the Clouds tour, and performed the first live songs from Dirt Femme at the venue.

As Lo looks into the crowd of beaming fans during the encore song “Habits,” they sing so loudly that Lo just ends up thrusting her microphone into the crowd. She’s beaming, surely getting taken back to her first tour. Nearly a decade later, the same numbers of fans still show up to chase the feeling her music gives them.

On Dirt Femme , Tove Lo Finally Gets to Exhale

The Swedish star explores what it means to have true creative freedom on her latest studio effort.

tove lo dirt femme

Tove Lo doesn’t mean to be political. When the 30-something-year-old singer flashes stadium-size crowds, co-writes songs with Pussy Riot, and muses casually on bisexuality and the idiocy of traditional domestic life, she isn’t giving the world some sort of intentionally cheeky shrug of put-on rockstar chill. It’s all part of an inherently Swedish, and decidedly Tove Lo, understanding of the world.

“A lot of the things that are considered controversial here are just sort of how it is in Sweden,” she explains.

Obviously, she was onto something. This month she released her fifth studio album Dirt Femme , a sweaty and frenetic study of the intersection of identity and love, laid out along 12 tracks of electro-pop, continuing a prolific and consistent string of radio-ready projects.

Dirt Femme embraces its status as the inaugural album on Pretty Swede Records, Tove Lo’s newly minted independent label, which was born in response to the ever-shifting landscape of the industry. “The way we consume music has changed, and everything just constantly feels so new. I wanted to take a new step too,” she says.

Perhaps as a result of her newfound independence, on Dirt Femme it sounds like Tove Lo is finally getting to exhale. She embraces a myriad of topics she’s never covered before, gracefully bouncing from questions on motherhood (“So let me talk this through, if we had a baby, you’d love them more than me?”), to the trauma of past disordering eating, and confessions of unabashed love on wistful, escapist ballads like, “True Romance” and “Cute and Cruel,” the latter of which features fellow Swedish folk duo First Aid Kit.

The album’s name is a nod to Tove Lo’s current understanding of her own femininity, something that’s become more clear to her after shedding a desire to fit into the music industry’s boy club.

“When I started out, I thought being a strong woman was leaning into my more masculine traits,” she says. “And I think that made me view my traditional feminine traits as weaknesses, which they're not, at all.”

She also celebrates a new love for the vessel she’s in, citing “years of therapy” to achieve the body acceptance she feels now. The single “Grapefruit” is the first time she’s openly discussed her past experiences with eating disorders.

“ Being so naked on stage and flashing my tits and shaking my bare ass is like a little small personal victory for me every time,” she says.

Despite its touchy topics, the album is topped with a glittery c’est la vie sentiment. At moments it embraces uninhibited indulgence, but in true rockstar-fashion, it cuts out the lingering guilt of the next-day hangover with blaring 80’s-infused power pop. Tove Lo’s ability to convey both universally pleasing hedonism and deeply personal anecdotes is something she first learned as a member of Wolf Cousins, the famous Swedish collective of songwriters and producers, founded by producer Max Martin.

tove lo performs in melbourne

“I always thought songwriting would be my career and then my music would be kind of like my indie career on the side,” she says. (In 2015, she wrote Ellie Goulding’s inescapable “Love Me Like You Do” for the 50 Shades of Grey soundtrack). “It’s something I’ve talked to Charli XCX about.”

Her inimitable pen game is also a direct result of Sweden’s progressivism. As a teenager, Tove Lo attended Rytmus Stockholm, a public high school devoted entirely to the pursuit of music careers.

“The student debt isn't anywhere near what it is here. You can go for it without being like, scared that it will, you know, ruin your life,” she explains.

While in school, teenage Tove Lo’s Walkman rotation oscillated from hometown hero Robyn (“I will always and forever be a Robyn fan”) to grunge staples like Nirvana, Hole, and Silverchair. She cites her best friend’s older sister, who “wore studs and dyed her hair,” as her first foray into music outside of pop.

I wanted to take a new step too.

“I just remember being like, that’s what I dream to look like,” she says. “The music itself was honest and angry and sad, and I was like, ‘This is just so cool.’”

While Tove Lo’s current blend of EDM and pop has become omni-present in mainstream music, her first huge hit, 2008’s intemperate anthem “Habits (Stay High,)” came out nearly ten years ago.

“When I first started putting out my own music, I didn’t expect it to go as far as it’s gone,” she says. “My drive for making music is all about if I can just make music and live off of it. If I can, I’ll be happy for the rest of my life.”
