Excellent tour guide....Carol Dobson. She was knowledgeable, friendly, and always willing to help. She was tireless in her quest to make everyone happy and satisfied. I greatly enjoyed time spent with her. Our bus driver Alex was incredible. Not only did he avoid collision when an oncoming car crossed the midline, and stop carefully I to miss 3 deer crossing the road in front of us, he provided the smoothest ride ever so I did not get motion sickness. First time ever! I greatly enjoyed the entire tour but these two people made it the best tour I have ever been on! Laura Spinazze

What people love about eastern canada tours from halifax.

It was an excellent trip!
The wonders of the Bay of Fundy tour was the best tour I’ve ever been on. We were a small group who enjoyed each other’s company and shared many varied and interesting experiences. As a solo traveler I was welcomed by everyone in the group and never felt on my own. Our tour director, Eunice, was welcoming, knowledgeable and went the extra mile to ensure we really experienced the local culture and delicacies. Our coach driver, Hank, who was also welcoming and knowledgeable, had a quietly confident manner which made you feel extremely safe when on the road. He also went the extra mile to ensure we got the most out of every experience. I would highly recommend this tour.

Welcome to Eastern Canada

The lure of Eastern Canada is born of both rugged and picturesque origins... it is timeless, found in quaint fishing villages steeped in Acadian and Celtic culture, in multicultural capital cities, along dramatic seascapes where crashing tides envelop steep cliffs... throughout the pastoral beauty of the Maritime Provinces, summer or autumn...

Niagara falls, ontario, "canada's capital cities plus niagara falls" and "cruising the great lakes: chicago to toronto".

Comprised of three waterfalls – American Falls, Horseshoe Falls and Bridal Veil Falls – Niagara Falls water stems from the upper Great Lakes; the river is estimated to be 12,000 years old. Journey to thundering Niagara Falls for a catamaran cruise near the plunging waters and misty spray of the waterfalls – getting wet is a distinct possibility – and explore the quaint Victorian village of Niagara-on-the-Lake with its flower-filled, tree-lined streets.

Bay of Fundy, The Maritimes

"nova scotia and prince edward island".

Head out to the strip of land known as Digby Neck, on the Bay of Fundy, known for the highest tides on earth, the rarest whales in the world, semi-precious minerals and dinosaur fossils. It is a haven for whale- and seabird-watchers, a wonderful place to spot finback, minke and humpback whales as well as seals. And… you'll attend a presentation by a local fisherman on the history and harvesting of the world-renowned – and melt-in-your-mouth delicious – Digby Scallop at a farewell dinner.

Quebec City, Quebec

"canada's capital cities plus niagara falls".

Quebec City – the only fortified city north of Mexico – is a cultural treasure. You'll feel like you've stepped into a 17th-century European village as you stroll along Old Quebec's cobblestone streets and enjoy a taste of the royal life during your three-night stay in your château-hotel overlooking the St. Lawrence River.

Lunenburg, Nova Scotia

"canadian maritimes" and "nova scotia & prince edward island".

Old Town Lunenburg achieved its designation as a UNESCO World Heritage Site because it's one of the best surviving examples of a planned British colonial settlement in North America. Closely tied to maritime pursuits such as shipbuilding, fishing and privateering, the 19th-century houses are often timber-built and colorfully painted. An excellent place for a guided walk.

Itinerary/Overview

At Landsby, we are specialists in creating unique experiences in Canada, due to a personal and direct relationship with our local partners. These packages provide a better value than booking a string of hotels separately on your own and allow for a more independent experience while providing peace of mind.

ITINERARY HIGHLIGHTS

• Fundy Coastal Drive • Beautiful Peggy’s Cove • Cape Breton Island & Cabot Trail • Hopewell Rocks Highest Tides • Fundy National Park • Port City of Saint John • Historic St. Andrews by-the-Sea • Shediac Lobster Capital of The World • Halifax Citadel National Historic Site • Anne of Green Gables the Musical

DAY 1: HALIFAX ARRIVAL

Arrive in the port city of Halifax and transfer independently to your hotel. Halifax is a quintessential Maritime destination and cultural hub of Atlantic Canada, offering visitors a vast scope of things to do and places to explore. Allow yourself some time to explore the beautiful waterfront area.

DAY 2: HALIFAX > PEGGY’S COVE > HALIFAX

We suggest beginning your morning with a drive to beautiful Peggy’s Cove, and visit Canada’s most photographed lighthouse, perched atop granite boulders. It is worth visiting the Halifax Citadel National Historic Site, located on top of a hill overlooking Halifax. You may explore the history of the fortress and the soldiers stationed there. Each day the Citadel comes alive with the sounds, displays and colour re-enactments of the kilted 78th Highlanders and the Royal Artillery. If later time allows, we recommend exploring Halifax’s Titanic connection and the many fine shops along the harbour front. Driving Distance: 61 MI / 99 KM

DAY 3: HALIFAX > BADDECK, CAPE BRETON

We recommend travelling to the northernmost part of Nova Scotia, cross over the Canso Causeway and enter beautiful Cape Breton Island. Continue on to Baddeck and visit the Alexander Graham Bell National Historic Site. At this National museum, see one of the largest collections of his photographs and personal mementos. Explore the work of this creative genius through displays and one of the largest collections of his photographs and personal mementos (admission not included). Driving Distance: 309 MI / 497 KM

DAY 4: BADDECK, CAPE BRETON

We recommend enjoying a drive on the Cabot Trail, the East Coast’s answer to California’s Pacific Coast Highway. On this scenic drive see stunning seascapes of giant cliffs and high mountains as they tumble down into the ocean from high above. It is likely that you will spot wildlife as you make your way along with the Cabot Trail. On the eastern end, whales can often be seen from your car as you drive the high cliffs along the shore. Driving Distance: 208 MI / 335 KM

DAY 5: BADDECK, CAPE BRETON > CHARLOTTETOWN, PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND (VIA CAR FERRY)

Return to mainland Nova Scotia and take the Northumberland Ferries Limited (free of charge) to Prince Edward Island then continue to Charlottetown. Driving Distance: 360 MI / 358 KM

DAY 6: CHARLOTTETOWN

Known as the Birthplace of Canada, you can visit a replica of the Confederation Chamber at The Confederation Centre of the Arts, Canada’s Memorial to the Fathers of Confederation. It is worth exploring Prince Edward Island, featuring carpets of bright green grass leading to bright-red cliffs. At Cap-Egmont we recommend viewing the amazing Bottle Houses; these are three buildings that are made out of more than 25,000 glass bottles. You may also visit the Anne of Green Gables House, immortalized in the famous Prince Edward Island-based novel of the same name. Charlottetown is the home of the longest-running seasonal musical in the world “Anne of Green Gables the Musical”.

DAY 7: CHARLOTTETOWN > HOPEWELL ROCKS > FUNDY NATIONAL PARK > CAPE ENRAGE > SAINT JOHN

Cross the Confederation Bridge into the province of New Brunswick to begin your exploration along the Fundy Coastal Drive, starting with the Hopewell Rocks, proudly boasting the best place to experience the highest tides in the world (up to 14 m / 48 ft.), where 160 billion tones of seawater flow, rising and falling twice a day, every day. Voted one of the Top 50 destinations to “discover, explore and experience” by Natural History Magazine, New Brunswick’s side of the Bay of Fundy is the unspoiled, serene adventure travel mecca of Atlantic Canada and home to one of the planet’s best collections of migratory whales and birds. Include visits to Hopewell Rocks with lunch, Cape Enrage, the village of Alma, and Fundy National Park. Arrive in the city of Saint John, Canada’s oldest incorporated city and the only city on the Bay of Fundy. Saint John has a Loyalist heritage that goes back centuries. Today, Saint John is a vibrant port city full of urban adventure on the edge of nature. Driving Distance: 249 MI, 400 KM

DAY 8: SAINT JOHN > ST. ANDREWS BY-THE-SEA

Start the day at the world-class New Brunswick Museum and experience the “Great Hall of Whales, “Birds of New Brunswick” and other captivating exhibits that tell the story of this intriguing maritime destination. Then meet the locals at the historic Saint John City Market, the oldest continuing farmer’s market in Canada (1876). This National Historic Site is a great place for lunch too! Historic Uptown Saint John is perfect for urban exploring on foot. Discover quaint alleyways, old-school pubs, and teeny tiny art galleries or stroll the waterfront – envisioning all the seafaring history that has unfolded there. Depart for nearby St. Andrews by-the-Sea, a celebrated Canadian seaside resort, founded in 1783 by the United Empire Loyalists. This coastal town representing one of the best-preserved examples of Colonial heritage in North America is a treasure trove of beautiful architecture, unparalleled scenery and rich marine life. Visit Huntsman Marine Science Centre/Fundy Discovery Aquarium and/or Atlantic Salmon Nature Centre. Driving Distance: 128 MI, 206 KM

DAY 9: ST. ANDREWS BY-THE-SEA

In the morning, depart from the town wharf to experience an exhilarating whale and wildlife excursion. Countless photo opportunities present themselves as the morning fog lifts off the Bay of Fundy. Lunch, leisure and shopping time in the National Historic District of Saint Andrews follows. Here you will find a variety of cafes and local pubs complete with the freshest seafood on every menu! This enchanting coastal hideaway has attracted royalty, celebrities and world travellers over the centuries... and now it’s your turn!

DAY 10: ST. ANDREWS BY-THE-SEA > HALIFAX

Enroute to Halifax, stop in the city of Moncton to experience the mysterious Magnetic Hill and have lunch at Magnetic Hill Wharf Village, drop into the Magnetic Hill Winery or try one of New Brunswick’s top experiences; Shediac Bay Cruises’ lobster educational cruise, located in the town of Shediac, known as “the lobster capital of the world”. A perfect way to bid farewell to your Canadian Maritime exploration! Driving Distance: 315 Miles / 500 Kilometers

DAY 11: HALIFAX DEPARTURE

Return your rental car in time for your return flight from Halifax Stanfield International Airport.

  • These packages include all accommodations as well as a detailed and personalized e-documentation (website and mobile app)
  • Meals are not included in order to allow for more flexibility

Dear Traveler, Welcome to a great vacation at an affordable price. Your Nova Scotia tour is fully guided and includes all hotels, activities, and some meals. Happy Travels! Caravan

"The Nova Scotia experience was fantastic. The scenery was something that needs to be experienced first hand and just enjoyed. Having the tour guides to help us along and assist us in understanding and interpreting what we were seeing was probably the most important aspect of taking a guided tour over driving ourselves. On our own, we would not have had half of the experiences we did on this tour - we would never have known what to look for. This was our first guided tour. We were relatively unsure of a group outing after always being on our own. As a result of the experience, we are planning our next tour - with Caravan." Mr. & Mrs. A.D., Cherry Hill, New Jersey
"I have traveled extensively with several different tour companies and am very pleased with my experience with Caravan. They deliver what they promise and provide a pleasant and hassle-free vacation." Ms. A.R., Ventura, California
"A++. We can’t say enough about every aspect of this spectacular 1,300 mile journey. Our tour director and driver were so caring and knowledgeable and they made this journey one that will be remembered and cherished always. We had adequate time to take photos and videos, and the accommodations were 5 star. Every aspect of this trip far exceeded our expectations. We will definitely take another Caravan Tour!" Mr. & Mrs. R.H., Nashua, New Hampshire
"This was one of the best tours we’ve been on. Saw many things the average traveler wouldn’t. The director and driver worked well together as a team. Our director was an unbelievably kind and informative person. She went above and beyond for all of us." Mr. & Mrs. K.S., Bassano, Alberta
"Our director enthusiastically greeted and welcomed all us travelers from all parts of the USA. I noted her spontaneous laugh and good humor as we set out on our days ahead in the Maritime Provinces. She told us all about the Bay of Fundy and Bore tide. We walked on the ocean floor among very interesting rock formations. What a miracle of nature. We crossed Prince Edward Island on the Confederation Bridge, and learning how hard and difficult it was to construct made all the difference in appreciating it. All the incredible places and people we met along the way on Cape Breton, balmy weather and seeing a an eagle swoop down in the bay for chicken was such a forever memory. At Cheticamp the latch hook rugs were works of art and such fun to recall Stella Camus creating them from ages 16 to 91! The Cabot Trail is so incredibly beautiful. Halifax’s Maritime museum will be forever remembered. Again, our director did everything possible to make our tour the best, always gave us suggestions and time lines to various outings. She took worry and concerns away as we felt safe and taken care of in her charge. I look forward to traveling again with Caravan and feel sure you have the best travel plans ahead for us." Ms. C.S., West Linn, Oregon
"We had wanted to take this trip for awhile. It was everything we had hoped for and more. We saw things we had never seen. The ride on the bus provided beautiful, breathtaking scenery. Fantastic tour director, wonderful driver, great group of people, food was great and scenery unbelievable. Caravan does a great tour! It was our first but will not be our last." Mrs. C.H., Flushing, Michigan
"Caravan did a marvelous job providing an introduction to the Canadian Maritimes. I very much liked the sightseeing and activities. I especially enjoyed the sailing trip near Alexander Graham Bell’s house, the bald eagles with their brilliant antics. I also liked the visit to Louisbourg: what a wonderful restoration. There was much to learn about the environment, spirituality, and human intersectionality. How all these elements coalesced is an astonishment to me. What a superb tour! Ours was truly a brilliant director, the Maritimes meant the world to him and by extension, to us. He is a true national treasure." Mr. K.M., Ithaca, New York

Day 5: Gander to Clarenville A scenic drive along the rocky coast of Notre Dame Bay leads to the beautiful outport of Twillingate where you will visit Long Point Lighthouse and the Prime Berth Fishery & Heritage Centre. Keep your camera close at hand for wildlife as you drive through Terra Nova National Park and on to Clarenville, your home for the next two nights. (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Day 6:Bonavista & Trinity Touring Today you will experience two quaint, historic towns.  First, visit Bonavista, where John Cabot first arrived in North America in 1497.   Learn about the hard life of the light keepers at Cape Bonavista Lighthouse Provincial Historic Site before continuing on to charming Trinity.  Stroll the lanes and explore the many historic buildings preserved from the 18th century. (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Day 7: Clarenville to St. John’s, NL Continue on to the intriguing old seaport of St. John’s, your home for the next two nights. North America’s oldest city and Newfoundland’s capital boasts a stunning location in the granite cliffs and slopes of the Avalon Peninsula.  Enjoy a city tour featuring the Victorian architecture of the downtown area, the busy modern waterfront, the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist, Confederation Building, and the panoramic view from Signal Hill. (Breakfast, Dinner)

Day 8: St. John’s Touring This morning, visit Bay Bulls for one of the highlights of your trip, a boat tour (weather permitting) in the Witless Bay Ecological Reserve to search for puffins and other seabirds. Next is a visit to the most easterly point in North America, Cape Spear National Historic Site. The afternoon is yours to explore St. John’s at your leisure. (Breakfast)

Your questions answered.

Find out what is included in your trip and have all your questions answered. We are here to help.

What’s Included

Frequently asked questions, is this an escorted tour.

Our vacations are not typically ‘escorted.’ You are not tied into a specific group, or a rigid daily itinerary but rather have the freedom of ‘independent’ travel.

This allows you, with the help of our Canadian Insiders, to personalize your trip to suit your occasion, interests, timeframe and budget. We’ll guide you through the process and provide the reassurance of seamless connections, customer service support, and scheduled activities tailored to your taste.

Can I customize this trip?

Your trip can be as rich as you’d like, and completely arranged around your interests and needs. The greatest benefit of working with us is our local knowledge. You can customize your trip and decide what you’d like to see and do.

If your trip is a special occasion, we’ll make sure it is unforgettable. Or if you’re traveling with a group, we’ll take care of the logistics so you can share time together stress-free.

Can I modify the trip's length by spending more or less time at certain locations?

Absolutely! We personalize all our clients’ trips to fit their exact tastes and needs. You can add days at locations that you’d like to explore and spend more time at. Or leave out certain areas that don’t interest you as much. Discuss your travel goals with our Vacation Advisors who make sure that your trip fits your needs and budget.

Where do I stay on my trip?

We partner with many hotels across the country that offer a variety of service levels and unique experiences. Choosing a hotel is based on local availability and personal preference, and our Insiders will help you find the perfect place to rest your head so that you can have the best experience possible.

What amenities will my hotel have?

Hotel amenities can vary by property, so your Vacation Advisor will discuss what’s most important to you, such as air conditioning, parking, laundry, swimming pool, spa, onsite restaurants, or 24-hour room service.

How much does my trip cost?

All our trips are personalized to fit our clients’ schedule and budget. The price of your trip generally depends on the travel season, train service, accommodations, and the sightseeing tours you take. When you request a quote you’ll be provided with the detailed information you need

Am I on the train the whole time?

Most of our trips include stops to get off the train to explore Canada’s beautiful locations, national parks and unique cities. However, if you’re keen to maximize your time onboard, we’ll pair you up with the perfect train experience.

Where do I sleep on the train?

All of our overnight train journeys feature a private cabin on board the train. In addition, you'll typically enjoy the train's viewing areas, common lounges, and dining cars where you can socialize with fellow travelers.

What makes it a boutique hotel?

We define a boutique hotel as being a smaller, more intimate property with an extra emphasis on service. They usually have some of the best restaurants and lounges in town.

What is the weather like in Quebec, Canada?

The weather depends on the season. Winters are cold and snowy, with temperatures averaging -5°C (23°F). Summers are warm and humid, with temperatures averaging 25°C (77°F).

What are the features of Business Class on VIA Rail's Corridor Train?

Business Class includes meals on the train (breakfast, lunch or dinner, depending on the time of day). These meals and complimentary beverages are served at your seat. Business Class seats are wide and comfortable with plenty of legroom. Another feature of Business Class is that you receive access to the in-station business class lounge before you board the train.

What is Sleeper Plus Class on The Ocean train?

Our Eastern Rail Classic itinerary includes The Ocean train between Halifax and Quebec City. This is an overnight train journey, where you stay in a private cabin in Sleeper Plus Class. These cabins feature comfortable daytime seating next to a large window. This seating converts into upper and lower bunks at night. In addition to your private cabin, you enjoy hot meals served in the dining car.

We have just come back from our tour Canada. We had a great time. Thanks Canada Rail Vacations, especially to Karen for putting together and planning such a trouble free, smooth running package to make our visit even more unforgettable. Every place we have been to have been carved very deeply in our memories. We fell in love with the Rockies, its wild life, ice fields, beautiful towns and the friendly people. We definitely want to come back and we know who to contact.

Lutfu Istanbul

Thanks for a great holiday. The Rockies and Eastern Canada - awesome, Victoria- beautiful. Whistler- magic. All the itinerary was excellent. Well done team!!

Mark Sydney, Australia

We had a wonderful time, everything was perfect. We would recommend trips organized by Canada Rail Vacations to anyone who is interested in actively exploring parts of the country. Many thanks for an outstanding job.

Astrid Ottawa, Canada

We would like to express our appreciation for a wonderful trip arranged through Kris, Canada Rail Vacations. From start to finish it was an ideal trip for us to enjoy Canada scenery, atmosphere and hospitality. We were afforded the right amount of activity for the trip yet relaxing. The suggested route from Calgary to Jasper was just spectacular. The hotels we stayed in are in town. And of course the train ride is A plus. Again Thank you.

Manuel United States

Paulina booked an amazing Canada for my family. This was so easy to arrange. I just told her what we wanted to do and the time frame we had. She got back to me within a day with an outline of what she had arranged and shortly after that, I had a finalized tour. The price was very reasonable for the tour. This was an A++ experience and I'll definitely use Canada Rail Vacations for our next trip to Canada.
