Best Experience : Exodus Travels
Courtesy of Exodus Travels
Traveling solo on an Exodus Travels group trip means access to self-guided and guided excursions around the world for every type of traveler. Choose a walking wine holiday in Portugal or explore Egypt via cruise boat and sleeper train, for example. Additionally, its Exodus Edits collection offers shorter itineraries of up to five days and is geared towards travelers in their 30s and 40s—though they’re ideal for anyone looking for more vigorous activity such as ziplining and surfing in Costa Rica or sampling street eats and beach hopping in Sicily.
There is no single supplement fee when you room with a fellow traveler, and chances are you may end up with your own room anyway. Booking a travel itinerary with UK-based Exodus Travels includes a full refund should the company need to cancel your trip and a complimentary trip transfer to another tour or different person up to 21 days before the scheduled trip. Plus, travelers who book their third or more trips with Exodus receive a 5 percent discount on their next booking.
What’s more, the company works to curate trips that align with a number of United Nations sustainable development goals including goals for responsible consumption and production, empowering local communities, and climate action considerations. Exodus Travels (founded in 1974) was awarded Best Operator in National Geographic Traveller’s sixth annual Reader Awards in 2021.
Best for Ages 35-50 : El Camino Travel
Courtesy of Encounter Travel
According to El Camino Travel ’s founder, Katalina Mayorga, elder millennials are their strongest customer base. That means if you were born between 1980 and 1985 approximately, you’ll find yourself among curious, like-minded solo travelers looking to immerse themselves in destinations like Trinidad and Tobago, Colombia, and the Eastern European nation of Georgia. Some trips even add a professional photographer to capture shareable shots so you can remain in the moment.
All of El Camino’s guided, small group trips max out at 12 participants. They’re also curated with an ethos of preserving and protecting local culture, the environment, and communities. For example, some of their partners include the Environmental Research Institute Charlotteville in Tobago and La Sierra Artist Residency in Santa Marta, Colombia.
Best Sustainable : G Adventures
Courtesy of Intrepid Travel
G Adventures is particularly known for its sustainable, responsible ethos. The company works with small, locally-owned hotels and operators to ensure your travel dollars benefit the community you’re visiting; outlines policies around child and animal welfare practices; aims to reduce single-use plastics, and works to ensure experiences taking place in Indigenous communities align with community goals.
Founded in 1990, G Adventures specializes in small group adventure tours to a host of destinations from Asia to South America and Africa to the Arctic. Nearly half of the travelers on every trip are flying solo, and there’s no single supplement if you choose to bunk with a same-sex roommate. Or, select your own room for a fee.
A Chief Experience Officer leads each group tour and itineraries are searchable by travel style. For example, find wellness-centric trips like nine days of daily yoga, visits to Hindu temples, and partake in traditional healing ceremonies in Bali. Or travel with their partner, National Geographic, for an exclusive guided tour of South Africa’s Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden and a visit to Soweto township in Johannesburg, the home of Nelson Mandela.
G Adventures partnered with hostel booking service Hostelworld in 2021 to launch its Roamies itineraries. Its combination of backpacking and organized travel itineraries includes countries like Albania, Mexico, the Netherlands, and Vietnam. The trips are marketed to 18- to 35-year-olds, though like-minded individuals keen on budget travel and communal environments may enjoy these trips, too.
Best for True Solo Travel : Black Tomato
Courtesy of G Adventures
Black Tomato specializes in bespoke luxury travel experiences. For those interested in traversing around the world solo and willing to pay a premium for tailored itineraries, its adventurous or culturally immersive experiences may just be your ticket.
Your travels might look like hiking and biking in Patagonia, embarking on a spiritual pilgrimage through Bhutan and India, chasing glaciers and geysers in Iceland, or learning to cook Georgia and Armenia’s local dishes or Japan’s regional cuisine.
In 2017, Black Tomato launched its Get Lost adventure travel experience. With the support of a dedicated team, and without prior knowledge of where they're headed, Get Lost participants will find their way home from an undisclosed location. The location is selected based on a pre-travel questionnaire about which environment clients would like to immerse themselves in. Then, they show up at the airport and the adventure begins.
Best for Ages 25-39 : For The Love of Travel
Courtesy of Contiki
With 80 percent of individuals traveling with For The Love of Travel jet -setting solo, each trip is packed with opportunities to meet fellow Millennial and Gen Z travel enthusiasts. For example, within your small “crew” of up to 14 people, make new friends doing snow sports and unwinding in saunas in Lapland or devouring tacos and sipping mezcal in Mexico City. Trips range from four to nine days, including weekends in Colorado’s Rocky Mountain wilderness or an extended weekend in Costa Rica where you’ll hike through rainforests, relax in hammocks, and hike, bike, or surf.
According to company feedback, the average FTLOT traveler is 30 years old and interested in meeting new people while traveling . The company bills itself as a mid-range travel company, where “we might stay in a more basic hotel for a couple of nights so we can include a Michelin-worthy meal and a private catamaran ride.”
In 2022, FTLOT plans to offer at least 10 new itineraries including to Belize, Turkey, and Spain’s Basque Country. And for those with the flexibility, the company launched Sojrn in 2021 featuring month-long, themed stays in destinations like Cape Town—focused on biodiversity—and a fashion-oriented stay in Paris.
FTLOT requires an initial deposit and allows installment payments if not paid in full.
Best for 50+ : Overseas Adventure Travel Rates
Courtesy Flash Pack
Overseas Adventure Travel is primarily aimed at American travelers aged 50 and over. It offers guided itineraries to worldwide destinations, including Africa, Antarctica, Asia, and the South Pacific, with trips ranked by activity level and accompanied by a list of physical requirements to help select an itinerary that is best suited for you. For example, their Japan and South Korea itinerary advise that participants be able to carry their own luggage as the selected hotels do not have porter service.
Some of Overseas Adventure Travel’s most popular trips include 17 days of wending the Adriatic from Croatia to Bosnia and Herzegovina (think a walking tour in Dubrovnik, sampling traditional Bosnian food in Sarajevo, and exploring the countryside near Zagreb). On another popular trip, you spend 15 days traveling through Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia, ending in Helsinki, Finland. All trips offer pre-and post-itinerary extensions, and either waive the single supplement entirely or offer a discount on a private room.
The company offers a free Roommate Matching Program which helps you find a like-minded, same-sex roommate. If they can’t find a match, your single supplement is deducted. Small group sizes typically average 13 travelers.
Overseas Adventure Travel won the Solo Travel Award for Best Tour in 2017 and 2018, thanks in large part to its policy of offering a limited number of single spaces for each itinerary.
Best Female : Wild Women Expeditions
Courtesy of Overseas Adventure Travel
It began as an all-women, Canada-based canoe tripping company in 1991, and Wild Women Expeditions is perfect for boundary-pushing women who want to travel independently and enjoy the safety and support of an organized tour. The company also prioritizes hiring female tour leaders and on-the-ground guides. It offers outdoor adventures for women of all ages and identities and with a range of physical abilities (“whether your greatest skill is tracking a storm or talking up a storm, summiting mountains or summoning courage, keeping your kayak in line or coloring outside the lines,” as the company describes).
The company travels to 31 destinations around the world like Egypt, Tanzania, and the Azores islands. Itineraries are typically adventure-based and are filtered on their website by activity, with options ranging from sailing to cycling and horse riding. Imagine yourself sea kayaking and snorkeling in the Galapagos or scaling glaciers in Alaska.
Most guests are solo travelers and there’s no single supplement to worry about as accommodation is typically in a shared room or cabin. Though if privacy is a priority, you can usually snag your own room for a nominal extra fee. Group sizes are kept small and social with between six and 14 women, depending on the itinerary you choose. The average group size is eight.
Wild Women Expeditions also takes care to curate trips that avoid or minimize the disturbance of wildlife; supports environmental education and advocacy projects; and partners with social justice and women’s rights organizations.
Want to take a look at some other options? See our guide to the best women-only adventure travel companies .
Best for Solo Parent Travel : Intrepid Travel
Courtesy of Wild Women Expeditions
Intrepid ’s family-themed holidays welcome adults traveling with children, including solo parents looking to travel with their kids without the stress of planning and coordinating a trip. Since each family’s travel needs and preferences are different, every itinerary includes an “essential trip information” section where Intrepid outlines whether the trip would be a good fit for you and your kids, as well as a physical rating from least to more strenuous activities.
For example, an itinerary through part of the Amazon Jungle in Peru advises the jungle can be very hot and humid, and that the weather can be unpredictable in the Andes. On the other hand, an 11-day trip to Borneo island in Southeast Asia lists a minimum age of 5 and outlines a range of accommodations from hotels to guesthouses and jungle camps; on a few occasions, travel times between destinations range between four to five hours. Trips to Costa Rica, Tanzania, China, and Morocco are also listed.
Individuals under 17 years typically receive a 10 percent discount, and the company requires that adults have at least one child under 18 years traveling with them. As part of Intrepid’s commitment to responsible travel, itineraries support initiatives surrounding sustainability and conservation, climate education, and preservation of Indigenous culture.

FAQs and benefits of traveling solo with a group
Solo travel can offer you a unique opportunity to challenge yourself, gain independence, and have an adventure. Plus, going on a guided tour as a solo traveler comes with great perks—including, private rooms in handpicked hotels, local experts and a Tour Director to handle all the details, and the company of equally curious travelers to share your journey. Here are a few other compelling reasons to go solo:
- Take the guesswork out of exploring someplace new. Need tickets to the Spanish Riding School in Vienna? Want to dine like a true Italian at a local’s home in Rome? Wondering how to hire a boat to float down the Nile River? Our experts will help you securely and easily navigate a destination you’ve only dreamed about exploring.
- No need to find a travel partner. Perhaps the biggest reason people travel solo is not having someone with matching travel interests. Traveling solo opens up a whole new world of possibilities. You get to go where you want, when you want, chasing your dreams without waiting for someone to come along for the ride.
- Enjoy adventures beyond your comfort zone. Traveling solo isn’t just exhilarating, but easy on one of our small-group adventure trips . You’ll find yourself learning and trying new things, from what you do (hands-on activities) to where you’ll go (roads less traveled) to how you'll get around (think outside the bus). All you need to get started is an open mind, a good pair of walking shoes, and a passion for taking the side streets.

Sailing and socialising in the Mediterranean
Med Sailors runs skippered sailing holidays for 20- to 35-year-olds, many of whom travel solo. Everyone shares a bunkbed cabin with someone else of the same gender; each yacht sleeps eight and travels in a flotilla of up to eight boats, so there is plenty of socialising. The yachts island-hop around Greece, Turkey, Croatia, or Italy (and the Caribbean too), making ports of call at villages and historic sights. Guests can try watersports, such as wakeboarding, join in the weekly regatta and enter a fancy dress contest on the last night. Each boat has large sunbathing decks, snorkelling gear and paddle boards. From £495 for seven nights half-board, flights extra, medsailors.com
Stripped-back safari in Southern Africa
EcoTraining runs year-long courses for professional safari guides – but it also offers week-long tasters for nature lovers who want to experience life in the bush. The setting is the Makuleke Concession, a remote part of the Kruger national park in South Africa, or the Mashatu game reserve in Botswana; sightings may include lions, leopards, elephants and rhinos. Guests walk up to 10km a day, carrying their own supplies, and learn to track animals, navigate, set up camp, make fires and leave no trace. Nights are spent wild camping under the stars. The full 311km over the Cantabrian mountains is challenging, but the last 100km can be walked in a self-guided week with Camino Ways. Setting off from the walled town of Lugo, the first three days are spent following quiet Roman roads through forests and farmland. At lively Melide, the path merges with the Camino Francés, so the second half of the walk is more sociable. £440 for six nights including half-board and luggage transfers, April to October, caminoways.com

Best tour companies for solo travellers
Emma Thomson
Friday August 25 2023, 11:00am
Single supplements, hidden extra charges, being made to share a room — sometimes solo travellers feel as if they’re being penalised. Not any more. We’ve put together a list of the top tour operators that offer solo traveller holidays and have adventurous trips ideal for meeting new people and immersing travellers in local culture, no matter their age. And solo doesn’t always have to mean single. Perhaps your partner is unable to travel at the same time or has different interests, perhaps you’re a single parent, or a teenager looking for life-defining experiences. Heck, even if you do have a travel buddy, the trips offered by these tour companies make solo travel look so good you’ll be tempted to leave them at home.

1. G Adventures
Best for local culture Founded in 1990 by Bruce Poon Tip when he was just 22, G Adventures connects travellers with local people in the countries they visit and is now the world’s largest small-group adventure travel company. Tours are hosted in over 100 countries and run the gamut from classic and 18–30 tours to wellness, rail and local living tours that base travellers with a host family. Most of the trips do not have a single supplement and accommodation is based on a twin-share basis with another traveller of the same sex. What sets G Adventures apart is its focus on putting money back into local communities and supporting indigenous peoples, women and youth through its non-profit partner, Planeterra Foundation. It supports more than 80 community development projects globally and 90 per cent of travellers visit a social enterprise project on their tour.
2. Intrepid
Best for sustainability Carbon neutral since 2010, an early adopter of carbon offsets, and with its own not-for-profit foundation, Intrepid was started in 1989 by two Australian friends, Darrell Wade and Geoff Manchester. Thirty years on, 50 per cent of its customers are single travellers and it lives up to its name by heading particularly far-flung areas of the globe, including Samoa, Papua New Guinea and the tiny African country of Djibouti. Intrepid also ventures into the Polar regions too, including voyages on the ice-strengthened Ocean Endeavour, which takes 200 passengers.
Best for travellers short on time When the 1970s hippie trail across Asia was in its heyday, John Gillies and David Burlinson drove an overland truck into the Hindu Kush — word spread and they built three more trucks to take groups from London to Kathmandu. That spirit of adventure still informs Exodus trips and solo travellers are eligible to join, with the most popular destinations for singles including Vietnam , Sri Lanka and Costa Rica . They also provide Exodus Edits — bite-size, adventure-packed trips for people in their thirties and forties that are designed to eat into annual leave as little as possible and allow travellers to take multiple shorter trips in a year.
4. Explore!
Best for adventure Explore! is a trusted adventure travel company with tours in all seven continents spanning everything from cycling the Amalfi coast to jungle hikes in Jamaica . Roughly half of its customers travel solo, alongside a mix of couples or friends travelling together. The average group size is 12 and trips are graded from “relaxed”, with more free time, to “full on”, with less downtime. While solo travellers can join all tours, Explore! also provides exclusively solo traveller tours that are broken down into categories for those in their thirties, forties, fifties and sixties, as well as self-guided walking and cycling holidays that solos can undertake.
Best for 18-35s In the summer of 1962 New Zealander John Anderson began to organise tours of Europe out of his minivan and Contiki was born. The backpacking spirit is still alive and strong, with the company catering exclusively to 18 to 35-year-olds and visiting a list of destinations that spans six continents. Seventy per cent of their travellers join trips solo and there’s a strong emphasis on “social travel” — group sizes can range from anywhere between 12 and 52 people — to help people forge lasting friendships. As an added bonus, trips can be paid for in instalments and cancelled free of charge.
6. One Traveller
Best for mature travellers One Traveller is a family-run company that hosts holidays exclusively for mature single travellers, ranging in age from 50 to fit 80-year-olds. Group sizes are larger (on average around 25) and the company provides strong European and Asian offerings, as well as a handful of destinations further afield such as Japan , Chile and Morocco , plus ocean cruises and UK holidays. “Scenic” and “Relaxed” tours cater to those with lower fitness levels and most tours include Vox audio guides for those with a hearing impairment.

7. Solos Holidays
Best for private rooms What started as golfing holidays for players whose partners didn’t want to join them has grown into tours for solo travellers on six continents. Holidays are organised by activity: from golf, skiing, tennis and treks to city breaks and cultural “discovery” tours that range from two nights to two weeks and are aimed mainly at travellers aged 40 and above. Unlike many operators, Solos ensure travellers always have sole use of either a single or double/twin room with no extra fees; there is no sharing of twins or single supplements.

8. Flashpack
Best for posh backpacking Married couple Radha Vyas and Lee Thompson founded Flashpack in 2014 after seeing a gap in the market between off-the-rack tours for single 20-year-olds and those aged 50-plus — they designed adventurous tours with a touch of luxury for travellers in their thirties and forties. Trips are classic itineraries interspersed with “can’t-do-it-by-yourself” experiences such as learning to make pastel de nata in Lisbon or canyoning through hidden caves in Slovenia . And with 80 per cent of “Flashpackers” keeping in touch after the trip, it’s great for making lasting friends.

9. Rabbie’s
Best for the UK Although Rabbie’s has now started trips within Europe, Robin Worsnopp started his company in Scotland in 1993 with a single Sherpa van. Some trips — especially in the UK — are day trips but increasingly there are also longer versions. Most prices in the UK don’t include accommodation (although Rabbie’s can book hotels for their guests) and welcome children, while European overnight tours include hotels. What’s universal is Rabbie’s fleet of driver-guides and 16-seater minibuses that can head into offbeat and single-track territory with ease. The London to Edinburgh Adventure winds its way through Stratford-upon-Avon, Conwy in Wales , Whitby, the Lake District and the borderlands of Cumbria and Scotland .

10. We Road
Best for budget For those in their twenties, thirties and forties, you’ll start getting to know your fellow travellers via WhatsApp two weeks before. Trips are divided into specific themes, including beaches, speedy trips and trekking — all with co-ordinators that you can message directly. At between eight and 15 people, group sizes are small. The “360” holidays aim to cover as much ground as possible (backpacks rather than suitcases are recommended). The Japan 360 trip ticks off all the main cities of Tokyo, Kyoto, Hiroshima and Osaka plus bamboo forests, bullet trains and the Buddhist temples of Kamakura.

The Best of Eastern Europe
Excellent tour and with a small group it was easy to get to & enjoy everything. There were a couple of hiccups. More to do with local public transport and out of the hands of our CEO, Jakub. He took everything in stride though and went above and beyond to assist some of the group when they needed it My first group tour and I was pleasantly surprised. G Adventures did a stellar job with this tour and comments from other, who have done other G Adventures’ tours, members of group said they are generally good value

Besa was the best tour guide ever. She was insanely knowledgeable about the history of Tirana, so this tour felt like much more than a food tour. She also took us to super interesting places I would never know to try. I recommend this highly !! 11/10 must do when you visit Tirana.

Excellent 18 days itineraries!
The Great Adventure
We think the Italy, Switzerland & France itinerary were excellent. (5 stars) , The Canturbury & London Day 1 were also excellent. London day 2, could use some work, as the time in the London museum is too short (2 hours) Another hour there would help a great deal. Likewise Camden Market was also too short. 2 hours, minimum, and then I would recommend going to Colchester and Ending the day there. Or on the overnight Ferry. In our case the overnight ferry was not available and it forced us to skip Colchester and instead drive from London to Dover/Calais to Antwerp... That wasn't fun at all. Then that forced us to have 45 minutes in Antwerp (not nearly enough) and instead of going to Amsterdam, they chose to follow intermarry and go to Volendam, which only gave 45 minutes there. A big mistake, as we then went to Amsterdam and only got 2 hours of free time. (horrible). We would have rather skipped Volendam and have the extra time in Amsterdam. Likewise the Amsterdam Diamond factory was a waste of time. Not interesting, not on the itinerary we had, and boring. Bottom line, the last 2 days London to Amsterdam were 2 stars.... If not for this we would have given 5 stars for Itinerary & transportation.
Balkan Kaleidoscope
Full of history and beautiful scenery.
Essential Britain & Ireland
Liz Ryan is an excellent guide and knows her history of Britain very well. The bus was very comfortable and even had USB ports for charging. And the free bottles of water, as needed, were greatly appreciated. All hotels were very clean with very good provided breakfasts and only one could have used a bathroom upgrade. All beds we used appeared to be queen size. We really enjoyed the optional live Irish dancing and show and dinner at "Taylors Three Rock" in Dublin. Perhaps information on the VAT tax and the procedures to get that refunded should be provided to guests before and after arrival. The tour we were on is called a 10 day tour but is actually only 8 days on the bus. We were impressed and feel it was well worth the cost!
Genuine Europe
I think a meeting on the first day around 5pm that you meet the group and find out where day from and how long they stay with the tour would be helpful, and that they tell us the rules like no food on the bus, before we all go for dinner. The staff was great and the bus drivers were excellent everyone was friendly and helpful. My family and I will do it again.
- Active Adventure
Best of Ireland and Scotland (15 Days)
What can I say about a last minute trip of a lifetime! We had the best guide, James Smith, and best driver, Paul. They were organised and professional, calm and skilful at dealing with a bunch of strange personalities; witty and insightful, sharing their life experiences with us; advising and guiding us with the history and the memories of home. Even missing my pickup point, I did not panic or worry. I’m sure James was shocked at receiving a call from Australia. Lucky for me, he picked up! Good to have a backup plan. Ireland and Scotland were everything I wished for. I loved all of it- the driving, excursions, free time, sightseeing, foods, local people, ancient and modern history, Dublin, Belfast, Glasgow, Donegal, Londonderry, Ring of Kerry, Giants Causeway, wall of Remembrance, Good Friday Peace agreement. I learnt about habits, customs, whiskey and shortbread, music, culture, accents and people, Celtic and Viking influences, symbolism and the importance of change and structure affecting our lives. Love the quirkiness too - The idea of Guinness offering a pint of beer for your blood donation is hilarious, doing your exams in Gaelga gives you a 20% advantage; museums and most event places have no entry fees. NB - (1) ensure all travellers have contact details, only for emergency use (updated as to country and location). (2) We would have loved to have a photo with our guide and driver. They were an important part of our experience! A Most enjoyable and memorable Trafalgar trip. I loved the little aside-jaunts and I loved the way James and Paul worked at keeping the journey interesting, well paced, stress less and fun. Highly commended!

Reviews of europe solo tours.
So honestly when we were assigned to this company through Tour Radar and looked at the reviews we were a little worried. I tried to hope for the best and assume that people who DO NOT have great experiences write more reviews. I was absolutely correct. We had AMAZING tour guides. Knowledgeable, kind, helpful. I think this company does an amazing job of moving people from one destination to another especially when it seems that itineraries overlap offering everyone the trip they desire. The hotels far outweighed our expectations. Of course there were small hiccups with time losses and changes in plans for the day but for the price and to get a brief view of Europe I would call it an outstanding tour.
Very good tour , something’s we didn’t find out right until the moment. But, overall good tour.
I really enjoyed the trip

Considering a guided tour in 2024? Here are the biggest trends to know before you book
What’s on the horizon for guided tours in 2024? A lot, it turns out. Travel as a whole has been on the upswing for a few years now, but this year looks to be one of the busiest and most exciting yet for guided tours.
I’ve asked tour companies and the USTOA (United States Tour Operators Association) for their predictions, trends, and advice for the year ahead. Here are the biggest tour industry trends to consider as you plan your 2024 travels.
PLAN A TRIP: 12 best hotel booking sites for cheap prices
1. More solo travelers are joining tours than ever before
Solo travelers, you’re in good company. Tour companies are reporting a significant increase in solo travelers on tours. In fact, Road Scholar recently did a deep dive into the solo travel trend , and according to the report, up to 30% of its tour participants are solo travelers. Among those solo travelers, 85% are women. EF Go Ahead Tours has seen a similar rise, with 83% more solo travelers at the end of 2023 compared to the year before.
SOLO TRAVEL TOGETHER: 10 best tour companies for solo travel
It turns out that solo travelers often have spouses or partners at home but still yearn to see the world even if their significant other doesn’t. Solo tour travelers report loving the independence, how easy it is to make friends on tours, and the chance to spend time the way they want to.
2. The desire for sustainable travel is growing, too
The USTOA has been tracking the number of tour companies with formal documented sustainability strategies, and says that there’s been “substantial growth” in the number of companies that have developed plans this year.
BEST OF THE BEST: 11 guided tour companies that offer trips around the world
I’ve also noticed a heartening shift toward tour companies thinking about their role in sustainability as I’ve been updating our tour company reviews for 2024. Pretty much across the board, tour operators are dialing up their efforts to support cultural and environmental preservation efforts.
This takes many forms: reducing or eliminating single-use plastics, supporting local economies through artisanal goods and tourism, offsetting carbon emissions, working with wildlife protection projects, and more.
3. The shoulder season travel trend is real
Whether you’re an independent traveler or going on a tour, there are a lot of benefits to traveling outside of peak seasons. In 2023, EF Go Ahead Tours saw a rise in the number of travelers on shoulder-season departure dates (October through April in Europe, for instance), and the company expects that trend to keep growing in 2024.
MYSTERY SOLVED: How much should you tip on a guided tour? All your gratuity questions answered
During its Black Friday sale, it reported that April was the top booking month for tours. Backroads has also seen a shift to more people booking earlier in spring and later in fall to avoid the crowds, heat, and higher summer prices. The trend is so pronounced that the tour company has added more departure dates to the 2024 shoulder season.
4. People are booking earlier than ever
When I spoke with a representative from Backroads near the end of 2023, the company reported that nearly 40% of its 2024 spots were already booked. Curious to see if other tour operators are seeing similar trends, I asked around. Road Scholar said that for 2024, it’s seeing a continuation of the early booking trend compared to pre-COVID, with an average booking time of 238 days before the start of a tour. And Avalon Waterways reports it’s seeing its highest early bookings in history for 2024, with several cruises already nearing capacity or sold out for the year.

5. More trends to watch in 2024
Here are a few more trends that have come up frequently in my research about what to expect on tours the year:
- Destinations: Far-flung destinations are looking increasingly popular. Across the board, bookings are up for 2024 tours to far-away spots including Thailand, Japan, and Norway.
- Experiences: Immersive experiences like gastronomy tours , hut-to-hut hiking , and pilgrimage routes such as Spain and Portugal’s Camino de Santiago have renewed appeal as travelers look for unique vacations.
- Private tours: This is an interesting one because after a big surge in 2021 in tour companies offering private tours , a few tour companies have retired the private tour option. However, in 2024, some tour operators are doubling down on private tour offerings, saying that more and more people are drawn to the relative affordability of being able to create their own tour group.
Considering a guided tour in 2024? Here are the biggest trends to know about before you book originally appeared on TourScoop.com .

Find your perfect river cruise: 10 best river cruise lines of 2024
Best River Cruise Line (2024) February 16, 2024
River cruising has been exploding in popularity in recent years, and it's easy to see why. You check in, unpack your bag, and let your floating hotel take you on a journey of discovery down some of the world's great waterways, with experiential guided excursions along the way.
These 10 river cruise lines have been selected by a panel of cruise industry experts and voted as the best by readers because they offer stellar experiences — both on the ship and off — from comfy staterooms and top-notch cuisine to outings that are expertly led and culturally immersive.
No. 10: Amadeus River Cruises
Amadeus River Cruises takes passengers on river journeys in Europe aboard a relatively young fleet. Vessels offer complimentary bicycles for passengers to use while ashore, as well as free-flowing wine to wash down elegant five-course dinners. Shore excursions can be booked as a package or a la carte, making Amadeus one of Europe's more affordable river lines.
No. 9: American Queen Voyages
American Queen Voyages specializes in river cruising across the United States. These all-inclusive itineraries include pre-cruise hotel stays, open bars, regional cuisine, and shore excursions in each port of call. Cruisers can ply the waterways of the Mississippi, Ohio, Illinois, Cumberland, Tennessee, Columbia, or Snake rivers.
No. 8: Riviera River Cruises
U.K.-based Riviera River Cruises offers more than 20 itineraries throughout Europe that appeal to value-conscious travelers. The fleet of young ships features extras like tea- and coffee-making facilities in all cabins, free Wi-Fi, and Juliet balconies in some cabins, as well as fares inclusive of meals, excursions, and entertainment.
No. 7: American Cruise Lines
Guests plying America’s waterways with American Cruise Lines enjoy some of the most environmentally-friendly small ships and riverboats on the continent. Professional chefs cook up delectable meals from locally sourced ingredients, while musicians, naturalists, and historians come aboard to enhance the cruising experience. Spacious staterooms feature private balconies for stellar views no matter the destination, and there are more than 50 itineraries to choose from throughout the United States.
No. 6: CroisiEurope Cruises
CroisiEurope operates 50 exclusive ships for its creative itineraries along the waterways of Europe, Asia, and Africa. Not only can passengers cruise major rivers and European coastlines, but they can also experience more intimate French canals aboard one of CroisiEurope’s fleet of 11-cabin barges.
No. 5: Pandaw Cruises
Adventurous travelers hop aboard any of Pandaw’s fleet of riverboats to cruise the waterways of Myanmar, India, Borneo, Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia. Pandaw’s 17 boats, handcrafted in brass and teak, offer spacious promenade and observation decks for outdoor viewing, as well as expansive staterooms where every window can be opened. Local cuisine is prepared from locally sourced ingredients whenever possible.
No. 4: Grand Circle Cruise Line
A river cruise offers a unique opportunity to spend a week or more getting immersed in local culture, and Grand Circle assigns a knowledgeable guide to every one of its cruises to show guests the way to unique experiences across Europe. Special Christmas Market itineraries in Germany and Austria make Grand Circle a great off-season choice, too.
No. 3: Abercrombie & Kent
Abercrombie & Kent's canal and river cruising itineraries are almost totally all-inclusive, with things like gratuities, alcohol, and shore excursions coming at no extra cost. The company specializes in luxury European cruises and barging with small groups of no more than 24 guests and resident tour directors on board the chartered vessels. Abercrombie & Kent also cruises the Yangtze and the Nile.
No. 2: Avalon Waterways
River cruisers with Avalon Waterways enjoy spacious standard staterooms and suites aboard Avalon’s fleet of luxurious ships, cruising the waterways of Europe, South America, Egypt, and Southeast Asia. Onboard amenities include a fitness center, a Sky Deck with a whirlpool and shade system, free Wi-Fi, flat-screen TVs, and a self-serve beverage station.
No. 1: Viking River Cruises
Founded in 1997, Viking River Cruises plies the waterways of Europe, Asia, the U.S., and Egypt with its fleet of more than 60 vessels. While Viking has also launched an award-winning ocean cruise line, the company built its reputation in river cruising. These all-inclusive cruises feature outside staterooms, Wi-Fi, wine and beer with meals, shore excursions in every port, and cultural enrichment programs.

The perks of solo travel on a group tour
A local leader
When you’re all by yourself, it’s easy to fall into the typical tourist traps. You wander within a few blocks of your hotel, see a few of the big sights and that’s about it. But solo travel on a group tour isn’t like that. Each of our trips has an expert local leader who knows every backstreet bar, cool tapas joint and hidden gallery. They’ll give you tips for your free time exploring, and introduce you to locals.
Ready-made friends
Go solo, but not alone. That’s our motto. The average Intrepid Travel trip has about ten people on it – people of all ages and backgrounds from all over the world. It’s like a hostel dorm room that travels with you (minus the smell and the weird naked guy). You’ve got ready-made friends for a karaoke session in Vietnam, a canoeing adventure in New Zealand or a chat over chai at the breakfast table. For a solo traveller, it’s a nice perk to have.
Logistics and convenience
We’ve spent the better part of 30 years honing our itineraries, getting rid of the dodgy hotels and keeping the good ones, picking the best restaurants to visit, and organising public transport and all the other logistics of travel so you don’t have to worry. Travelling alone can often be a) confusing and b) complicated. But with us, all you need is a good attitude – we’ll take care of the rest.
Our leaders know the areas of town to avoid after dark. They know how to haggle at markets, avoid pickpockets and scammers and generally have a good time without anything going wrong. And don’t forget, when you're a single traveller on a group tour, you’re in a group! You’ll have a bunch of new friends to watch your back (and your stuff). It’s all the flexibility and freedom of independent travel, but without the risks.
Solo travel FAQs
Will i have my own room.
It’s completely up to you. On our trips rooming is organised on a twin-share basis and we pair up solo travellers with another traveller of the same gender as per the gender marker on each of their passports. But if you'd like your own room, an individual room is available on the majority of our trips (it’s just a small extra charge). Just mention this to our customer service team when booking your trip and they'll arrange it for you.
As a responsible tour operator, we strive to create a safe and inclusive environment for everyone. In the case that your gender identity differs from what is indicated on your passport, please contact us so that we can discuss rooming options with you.
On a small selection of itineraries some accommodations are booked on an open gender, multi-share basis (for example on a felucca in Egypt or an overnight train in Vietnam). In those instances it will clearly be stated in our Essential Trip Information prior to booking and travelling.
How does group time work?
Whether you’re travelling solo or with a partner, our trips have a set itinerary. But within that there’s time set aside for your own exploration (if you want to – no pressure). The amount of free time depends on the travel style - you can ask your guide for a few tips then head out alone, or hang out with the group and see where the day takes you.
Do I have to pay for an individual room?
Not if you don’t want to. If you’re happy to bunk with a traveller of the same gender – paired up as per the gender marker on each of their passports – there’s nothing extra to pay on the vast majority of our trips. If you want your own room, just mention it to our customer service team when booking and they can organise an individual room for a small charge.
As a responsible tour operator, we strive to create a safe and inclusive environment for everyone. In the case that your gender identity differs from what is indicated on your passport, please contact us so that we can discuss rooming options with you.
I'm new to group travel, what will my group be like?
Intrepid travellers are connected more by attitude than age. They’re a friendly, open-minded and curious bunch, and a lot of them elect to travel alone (so no third-wheeling, we promise). Our trips attract a mix of genders and ages generally range from 25 to 65. It’s hard to know exactly who you’ll meet, but you can be assured you'll be a part of the fun.
Is it cheaper to travel in a group?
On average, solo travel on a group tour is way more cost-effective than heading out on your own as you're splitting the cost (we can also guarantee a lot more inclusions and extras than you’d usually get for your money).
Can I tailor the trip to me?
We have a range of trip styles – Basix, Original and Comfort – that offer different levels of flexibility and free time. While there’s always a set itinerary for the group, our Basix trips tend to have less included activities and more time to do your own thing, Original trips have a 50/50 balance, and our Comfort trips have more included activities. Lots of our travellers choose to travel on their own, so it’s common for people to want different things from their experience. Be sure to chat to your leader ; they can recommend places to explore during free time or things to try after the trip has finished.
Tips for solo travellers
Embrace local
It pays to learn a little bit of the local language wherever you go and you should always consider the country’s dress code when picking out what to wear. In many places, you maybe be expected to dress modestly and cover up exposed skin so consider packing a sarong or light scarf to cover exposed shoulders, along with a long skirt or trousers. Whether you agree with it or not, it’s respectful (and smart) to follow the local style.
When you’re out and about being all adventure-y, just keep an eye on the sunset. Try to avoid catching public transport after dark when you’re on your own, especially if you’re carrying your suitcase/backpack/fancy camera/map (it kind of screams ‘tourist’). Travelling with a group is a smart move for any traveller; it’s always good to have people around who’ve got your back.
Social media may be the doom of mankind and rational thought as we know it, but it can be useful, even as a safety tool. Your friends and family are now privy to a minute-by-minute update of your whereabouts, regardless of where you are in the world. Before you leave home, give your friends/family a social media heads-up: ‘If I don’t post a sunset selfie for five days straight, get in touch and see if I’m okay.’
Our solo travel safety guide
Share your itinerary.
Good advice for us all, but particularly for people travelling solo. Make copies of your itinerary, contact details, passport and travel insurance, then email them to yourself and to one or two friends/family at home. Check-in on social media when you can so people can keep track of where you are.
Remember the little things
If you’re arriving late in a city by yourself, book a hotel with a front desk or concierge service (many hotels also offer private transfers that don’t cost the earth from the airport or train station). If you're travelling with us, we can help you organise an arrival transfer. Read your maps before you head out for a walk (you can use a map app on your smartphone – or take screenshots of where you’re going if you don’t want to use up your precious data). If you need to check your map when you’re out and about, duck into a shop or café to do it. Leave the blingy jewellery, wedding rings and designer clothes at home, and aim to dress like the locals do – hit up the local markets if you haven’t packed the right outfits. Aim to keep track of travel times, so you’re not caught out after dark.
Roam if you want to
Most mobile/cell providers now offer travel passes to help manage your international roaming costs (which, let’s face it, are expensive!). For a few dollars a day, you’ll have access to data, which means you can log into your apps (like Skype, email and WhatsApp) when you’re out of WiFi zones and quickly get in touch with someone – a friend at home, someone in your group, or the police – if you need to. It might also be worth checking out the local cell/mobile providers as these can be quite cost effective.
Fare's fair
Solo travellers are way more likely to be ‘taken for a ride’ at the airport by unscrupulous taxi drivers, so do your research before you arrive. Make sure you get a cab from the airport/station taxi rank – if you’re not sure where to go, just head to the information desk for help. Touts tend to hang out in the arrivals area and promise cheaper rates, but can often be dodgy. When you get to the cab rank, ask the driver to use the meter or request a cost estimate before you hop in the car – if it’s way higher than it should be, pick another vehicle. A lot of airports have train stations attached as well, so consider public transport if you want to save a dollar or two.
Stick together
It’s one of the advantages of travelling solo on a group tour: safety in numbers. The big, 50-person bus groups stand out on the road, but a small Intrepid group of eight or nine people, with a local leader showing the way – including areas to avoid and getting around safely – won’t draw much attention. Plus, it’s a great way to see parts of the world you may feel uncomfortable exploring on your own. If you want to do things on your own, consider a day tour to familiarise yourself with a city and get to know the local way of life.
Trust your instincts
Solo travel is all about confidence. If you’re relaxed and self-assured on the street, you’re more likely to blend in. When you meet new people, don’t assume they’re all out to get you, but be sensible too and trust your gut. If it feels wrong, it probably is. Remember: the popular tourist areas are often the most well-lit and secure, but they’re often a juicier target for pickpockets and scammers. Just use your common sense; half of travel safety is simply being aware of your surroundings.

15 Once-in-a-Lifetime Solo Trips for Seniors

Flying Solo
Don't fight the urge to travel in retirement if it means traveling alone. The best trips for solo travelers over the age of 50 provide opportunities to safely go on exciting adventures while meeting new people. Wondering what interesting destinations to add to your bucket list? We've pulled together 15 unforgettable, wallet-friendly trips, both domestic and international, that'll inspire you to hit the road or hop on a plane, train, or boat — or simply explore local attractions — to see the world in a whole new way.
1. Get Inspired in Santa Fe, New Mexico
With its warm, dry climate and copious outdoor adventures, rich cultural history, and vibrant arts and culture scene, it's no wonder Santa Fe — the oldest state capital in the U.S. — is such a hit with the 50-plus crowd. Single travelers can immerse themselves in the community by visiting the historic plaza , which dates back to the early 1600s and continues to host a wide range of events — from markets to concerts. History buffs can tour the San Miguel Mission, various museums focused on the region’s Native American traditions, and the nearby Puye Cliff Dwellings, once home to more than a thousand Pueblo people. The Spanish colonial adobe city in the foothills of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains is also more saturated with art galleries and museums than almost anywhere else in the world — all within walking distance or a short drive from the town square.
2. Discover Charleston, South Carolina
Deemed the region's best city , Charleston is oozing with history and hospitality — from charming buildings and walkways to friendly locals. Solo senior travelers, even those with limited mobility, will find it easy to get around and connect with others through the Southern city's varied group tours — from ghostly graveyard walks to food tours to history lessons via horse-drawn carriage, boat, or bus. For a city so closely tied to both the American Revolution and Civil War, it's also surprisingly contemporary — its restaurant and boutique hotel scene is constantly reinventing itself, making it a popular spot for weekend exploring. It's also loaded with free and cheap fun .
3. Visit the Nation's Capital
With its smorgasbord of cultural, architectural, and historical landmarks to see, every American should visit Washington at least once. Entrance to many noteworthy museums like the National Museum of Natural History and National Air and Space Museum is free, and visiting iconic memorials along the National Mall and many other free activities can give budget-conscious travelers a big bang for their buck. For an inexpensive, flexible, and relatively easy way to navigate the city's multitude of attractions, go on a hop-on, hop-off sightseeing tour — even a night tour of the capital city’s illuminated monuments and memorials. You might just meet a potential travel buddy or a new friend along the way.
Try Cheapism Search and Save , a new tool that lets you search the web and see the latest from Cheapism.com, all in one place.
4. Embark on an Alaskan Cruise
For a vacation within the U.S., a cruise through Alaska's extraordinarily beautiful and rugged wilderness can be as relaxing or as active as you'd like. Midsize cruises through Alaska’s Inside Passage — a coastal waterway boasting wildlife-filled fjords and lush scenery — can access ports that aren't open to larger ships. Sail through Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve for unrivaled views of Alaska's massive glaciers, fjords, cascading waterfalls, and wildlife. Adventurous types can fill their itineraries with excursions: skiing, mountain biking, ice-fishing, white water rafting, helicopter tours, and train rides through majestic mountain ranges and charming Alaskan towns.
5. Traverse California's Pacific Coast Highway,
A scenic road trip can be an excellent, budget-friendly way to explore stretches of the U.S. you've never seen before. The center was officially opened in 1939 to exhibit the achievements of the Soviet Union. It’s a huge complex of buildings and the largest exhibition center in Moscow. There are several exhibition halls dedicated to different achievements and every year there are more than one hundred and fifty specialized exhibitions!
The Peoples Friendship Fountain was constructed in 1954 and is a highlight of the park. The stunning gold fountain features 16 gilded statues of girls, each representing the former Soviet Union republics.
The Stone Flower Fountain was also built in 1954 and is worth checking out. The centerpiece of this large fountain is a flower carved from stones from the Ural Mountains! Along the side of the fountain are various bronze sculptures.
You will find many people zipping around on rollerblades and bicycles across the large area that the venue covers. It’s also home to amusement rides and carousels, making it the perfect place to stop with kids on your Moscow itinerary! Make sure to wear comfortable shoes and allow a few hours to explore all the areas that interest you!

- Cost: Prices vary largely between USD $2.00 – USD $228.00 based on seat location.

The Bolshoi Theater is among the oldest and most renowned ballet and opera companies in the world! It also boasts the world’s biggest ballet company, with more than 200 dancers!
The theater has been rebuilt and renovated several times during its long history. In 2011 it finished its most recent renovation after an extensive six-year restoration that started in 2005. The renovation included an improvement in acoustics and the restoration of the original Imperial decor.
The Bolshoi Theater has put on many of the world’s most famous ballet acts! Tchaikovsky’s ballet Swan Lake premiered at the theater in 1877 and other notable performances of the Bolshoi repertoire include Tchaikovsky’s The Sleeping Beauty and The Nutcracker!
Today, when you visit the theater, you can expect a magical performance from skilled singers, dancers, and musicians with the highest level of technique!
If you don’t have time to see a show, the theater also provides guided tours on select days of the week. Tours are given in both Russian and English and will provide visitors with a more intimate look at the different areas of the theater!
The stage of this iconic Russian theater has seen many outstanding performances. If you’re a fan of the performing arts, the Bolshoi Theater is one of the greatest and oldest ballet and opera companies in the world, making it a must-see attraction on your Moscow itinerary!

Cosmonautics Museum | Alexander Garden | Ostankino Tower | Izmaylovo District | Soviet Arcade Museum
Now that we’ve covered what to do in Moscow in 2 days, if you’re able to spend more time in the city you’re going to need more attractions to fill your time. Here are a few more really cool things to do in Moscow we recommend!
Memorial Museum of Cosmonautics
- Hear the timeline of the ‘space race’ from the Russian perspective
- This museum is fun for both adults and children!
- Admission is USD $4.00
The Memorial Museum of Cosmonautics is a museum dedicated to space exploration! The museum explores the history of flight, astronomy, space exploration, space technology, and space in the arts. It houses a large assortment of Soviet and Russian space-related exhibits, and the museum’s collection holds approximately 85,000 different items!
The museum does an excellent job of telling the full story of the exciting space race between the USSR and the US! It highlights the brightest moments in Russian history and humanity and is very interesting and fun for all ages!
If you’re a fan of space or just curious about gaining insight into Russia’s fascinating history of space exploration, make sure to add this to your 3 day itinerary in Moscow!
The Alexander Garden
- A tranquil place to relax near the Red Square
- Green lawns dotted with sculptures and lovely water features
- The park is open every day and has no entrance fee
The Alexander Garden was one of the first urban public parks in Moscow! The garden premiered in 1821 and was built to celebrate Russia’s victory over Napoleon’s forces in 1812!
The park is beautiful and well maintained with paths to walk on and benches to rest on. The park contains three separate gardens: the upper garden, middle garden, and lower garden.
Located in the upper garden, towards the main entrance to the park is the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier with its eternal flame. This monument was created in 1967 and contains the body of a soldier who fell during the Great Patriotic War!
The park stretches along all the length of the western Kremlin wall for about half a mile. Due to its central location in the city, it’ll be easily accessible when you’re out exploring The Red Square.
It provides a bit of relief from the city’s high-energy city streets. Bring a picnic lunch, go for a walk, or just sit and people watch, this is one of the best Moscow sites to wind-down and relax!
Ostankino Television Tower
- Television and radio tower in Moscow
- Currently the tallest free-standing structure in Europe
- Make sure you bring your passport when you visit, you can’t go up without it!
For spectacular views of the city, make sure to add the Ostankino Television Tower to your itinerary for Moscow! This impressive free-standing structure provides stunning views of the city in every direction. The glass floor at the top also provides great alternative views of the city!
It takes just 58 seconds for visitors to reach the Tower’s observation deck by super fast elevator. The tower is open every day for long hours and is a great site in Moscow to check out! There is even a restaurant at the top where you can enjoy rotating views of the city while you dine on traditional Russian cuisine or European cuisine!
The tower is somewhat of an architectural surprise in a city that is not known for skyscrapers! To see the city from a new perspective, make sure to add this stop to your Moscow itinerary!
Izmaylovo District
- The most popular attractions in this district are the kremlin and the flea market
- Outside of the city center and easy to reach via metro
- Most popular during the summer and on weekends
Travel outside the city center and discover a unique area of the city! The Izmaylovo District is a popular destination for locals and tourists alike, and one of the coolest places to see in Moscow! The two main attractions we recommend checking out are the Kremlin and the flea market.
The Izmailovo Kremlin was established as a cultural center and molded after traditional Russian architecture. This colorful complex is home to several single-subject museums, including a Russian folk art museum and a vodka museum!
Next to the Kremlin is the Izmailovo open-air market, which dates back to the 17th century! The market is connected to the Izmailovo Kremlin by a wooden bridge. Pick up all your Russian souvenirs here, including traditional handicrafts, paintings, books, retro toys, and Soviet memorabilia!
You will find many hand-made and hand-painted options available at higher prices, as well as mass-produced souvenir options at lower prices!
Museum of Soviet Arcade Games
- Closed on Mondays
- Filled with old arcade games that visitors get to try out!
- The museum also includes a small cafe and burger shop
For something a little different, check out the Museum of Soviet Arcade Games! The museum features roughly 60 machines from the Soviet era, including video games, pinball machines, and collaborative hockey foosball! The machines inside the museum were produced in the USSR in the mid-1970s.
The best part is, most of the games are still playable! Purchase tickets and try the games out for yourself! The museum also has a neat little screening room that plays old Soviet cartoons and an area with Soviet magazines! This unique attraction is a fun addition to a 3 day itinerary in Moscow, and an attraction that all ages will enjoy!
Whether you’re spending one day in Moscow, or more, safety is an important thing to keep in mind when traveling to a big city! Overall, Moscow is a very safe place to visit. However, it is always recommended that tourists take certain precautions when traveling to a new destination!
The police in Moscow is extremely effective at making the city a safe place to visit and do their best to patrol all of the top Moscow, Russia tourist attractions. However, tourists can still be a target for pickpockets and scammers.
Moscow has a huge flow of tourists, therefore there is a risk for pickpocketing. Simple precautions will help eliminate your chances of being robbed. Stay vigilant, keep your items close to you at all times, and don’t flash your valuables!
If you’re planning a solo Moscow itinerary, you should have no need to worry, as the city is also considered safe for solo travelers, even women. Stay in the populated areas, try and not travel alone late at night, and never accept rides from strangers or taxis without a meter and correct signage.
The threat of natural disasters in Moscow is low, with the exception of severe winters when the temperature can dip below freezing! Bring a good, warm jacket if you visit in Winter.
However, please note that Russian views on homsexuality are far less accepting than those in Western Europe. Likewise, Non-Caucasian travellers may sadly encounter racism in Russia .
Don’t Forget Your Travel Insurance for Moscow
ALWAYS sort out your backpacker insurance before your trip. There’s plenty to choose from in that department, but a good place to start is Safety Wing .
They offer month-to-month payments, no lock-in contracts, and require absolutely no itineraries: that’s the exact kind of insurance long-term travellers and digital nomads need.

Travel + Leisure / Reese Herrington
As dusk fell on Cape Town’s GreenMarket Square while I was on a solo trip in South Africa a few years back, I started hustling to get to my dinner reservation. I had been told to avoid wandering the area on my own after dark and only had a few blocks to go when a local teen asked me to buy him something to eat at the corner bodega. Not wanting to expose my wallet, I grabbed a Clif Bar that I happened to have in the outer pocket of my bag, gave it to him, and headed off.
A few blocks later, I was walking towards a tourist dining al fresco on the sidewalk facing me — and as I approached, she shouted firmly, “Stop following her!” Turns out, the kid had been tailing me and I was unaware — and unprepared. Now, I always pack a personal safety alarm and encourage any solo traveler to do the same. But this is just one of the many safety devices that have become a permanent part of my always-packed luggage.
Having traveled to at least 50 countries, most of my trips in the last decade have been on my own, and I can’t imagine any other way to discover the world. While it’s easy to let paranoia about isolated incidents cloud our adventures, all it takes is some simple preparation to ensure that our global wanders stay safe . “Rarely have I felt like I needed any safety device during solo travels, but the peace of mind that comes from having a few items on hand is invaluable,” Radha Vyas, co-founder of Flash Pack , a solo travel company for those in their 30s and 40s (and one of my favorites to travel with) tells Travel + Leisure. “Solo travel is incredibly rewarding, and it takes confidence. And sometimes that confidence comes from having the right tools in the toolkit for when you need them."
Over the years, I've developed a network of solo travelers, from other journalists and writers to folks at my most trusted travel companies, and they each have their own essentials that they never venture without. Here are the 14 must-have personal safety products that every female solo traveler should consider packing, according to fellow solo female travelers.
Anker PowerCore+ 5,000mAh Portable Charger
To keep up with my RunWestin training program for the Boston Marathon while I’m on the road, after a rainy few days in Vancouver, I went for a spontaneous run around Stanley Park, even though it was twilight. With both my international roaming and running tracking app Strava on (the app lets me send a “beacon” to my friends back home in case of emergency), I didn’t anticipate that the battery on my phone would quickly drain as darkness fell.
As my power went to single digits, I panicked since I needed my phone’s map to guide me back to my rental car, or at least to connect me with an Uber to give me a lift if things got too sketchy, and I immediately regretted not packing my favorite, pint-sized portable charger on this trip. Measuring about the same size as a lipstick tube, the Anker battery pack provides just enough of a boost of juice when emergency moments strike since — let’s face it — our phones do become our lifelines.
Cekkiena Carbon Monoxide Detector Portable Mini Air Quality Monitor
When headlines first started spreading a couple years ago about the dangers of carbon monoxide poisoning for travelers — at both a Bahamas resort and Mexican vacation rental — my sister sprang into action by buying portable detectors and encouraged me to do the same. At first I thought that it was excessive, but since the poisonous gas is odorless, I’ve since realized how essential it is just to do a quick check. I've bought quite a number of them before settling on this Cekkiena one, which does need to be charged routinely, but is so small and compact that it doesn’t weigh you down.
Sabre 2-in-1 Clip-On Personal Alarm With LED Safety Light
While the Birdie Personal Safety Alarm is no doubt a reliable — and trendy — favorite among solo female travelers , I actually depend on Sabre’s more basic clip-on model since I can feel it securely sitting against my waistband, knowing that I can beckon help with the push of a button. The latest model also has a LED safety light, doubling the protection visually, and a blaring alarm that the brand notes is audible up to 1,300 (or the length of four football fields). Plus, I can get two of these for the price of one Birdie.
Apple AirTag
When Apple AirTags first came out, I didn’t love the idea of being tracked. But after an airline’s tracking app showed that my checked bag had made it from Newark to London when it clearly hadn’t, I knew that it was time to take tracking my belongings into my own hands — and I haven’t looked back since. Now, I keep one in both my backpack and carry-on, as well as a third one in a checked bag for long trips. But one of my travel friends, Helene Sula , whose book " Two O'Clock on a Tuesday at Trevi Fountain " comes out in April, has another creative use, carrying one on herself when she’s traveling alone. “I always let my husband know my AirTag is on me,” she says, noting it’s “tiny” and “not super expensive.” She adds, “If I go missing, he’ll be able to know exactly where I am.”
Rerishom Portable Door Lock
On a recent trip to North Carolina, I was taking a quick rest in my Dillsboro hotel room when a man unlocked the door and walked right in. Turns out, we had both been given the key to the same room. It was a serious wake-up call to start packing a door lock. The same thing had happened to Sula, who always travels with this Amazon one since it gives an “additional barrier of entry,” she explains. “Its compact size and simple installation make it a practical solution for reinforcing door locks in unfamiliar environments…and ensures a restful night's sleep.”
Homotek Wedge Rubber Door Stops
Similar to the door lock, Liz Carr of Intrepid Travel (I took my first big solo trip with them to the Galapagos ) always brings a triangular door stop that’s usually used to keep doors open, but places it “facing the door on the inside to keep it from being opened on the outside. She says it’s “very cheap and there’s always room in the suitcase” for one. Vyas does the same and is a fan of this Homotek one since it has a strong grip: “It’s so simple, yet so effective."
Johnson & Johnson First Aid Kit
Another great travel friend, Juliana Broste, a travel video journalist better known as Traveling Jules , says, “When you're traveling solo, you've got to anticipate your needs since you don't have a friend you can send to the pharmacy for you.” That’s why she always has a mini first-aid kit like this Johnson & Johnson one handy with all of the basics. The bandages are not just useful for accidental cuts and scrapes, but also can help “prevent blisters from a naughty pair of shoes,” she advises. Broste one-ups the kit with her own extras like travel-size Advil and Tylenol , as well as Pepto Bismol and allergy pills since “you can never be too prepared.”
Eatmi Wedding Band
One of my favorite budding travel writers is Acacia Gabriel , who I met through Be a Travel Writer . When she’s exploring the world on her own, she slips on a wedding band that she bought in Greece. Usually it’s on her middle finger, but she’ll slide it to her left ring finger “when a situation calls for it.” That includes when she’s walking around late at night or drinking with a new group of people. “I don’t even have a boyfriend, but I’m a small girl and I prefer to avoid conflict if I feel like someone is overly interested,” she shares. “I wear the ring to signal to people that I’m not available. Unfortunately, some people are more likely to respect an imaginary man than a young girl.” That said, she hasn’t had to use the trick often, but always rests assured knowing that it’s there.
The Atomic Bear Stealth Pen
Since Fora Travel Pro Travel Advisor Jacqueline de Guzman so often travels for business on her own, often getting back to her hotel room late at night, her husband bought her a tactical safety pen. “While it appears and functions like a standard pen, its tungsten construction gives it dual capabilities: serving as both a personal defense tool and an emergency escape aid,” she says, explaining that it can help ward off threats or break glass to get out of a dangerous situation. ”This discreet, yet invaluable tool provides me with a profound sense of security.”
Her go-to one is about to sell out at Amazon, but there's another useful version from the same brand that's fully stocked (and on-sale): The Atomic Bear Tactical Pen , which serves as a flashlight, military EDC pen, glass breaker, and bottle opener.
Anvil TSA Approved Cable Luggage Lock
With locks built into so many suitcases today, we often don’t think to carry an additional lock, but like Fora Pro Travel Advisor Lindsay Vaughn , I keep a cable lock in my bag since your big luggage isn’t all that you need locked up; they also come in handy for personal items like purses, backpacks, and more, according to Vaughn: “When I visited nine countries in Europe, I mainly rode the night train and slept most of the time on the train, so having the TSA cable lock on my backpack and luggage allowed me to be able to relax and sleep while traveling alone on those trains."
Eagle Creek RFID-Blocking Pouch
Another travel expert, Anne McAlpin , a.k.a. @packitupwithanne , has traveled to more than 83 countries — mostly solo —and has been using a passport security wallet for more than 25 years on every international trip. She says the key feature to look for is one with RFID-blocking technology to protect not just your passport, but also your credit cards from possible skimming. This Eagle Creek one has a belt loop (in black and brown to blend with your belt!) so it can tuck into your waistband discreetly — and also has extra pockets to stash cash. “Tucked under clothing, this provides protection from pickpockets, especially in crowded tourist spots like train stations, monuments, and the like,” according to McAlpin, who also notes that a neck pouch can also do the job.
If her go-to Eagle Creek RFID-blocking pouch is out of stock during your next Amazon visit, you can also get it at Backcountry . Or, you can grab this similarly-designed version from Lewis N. Clark , which also has a secure belt loop and offers RFID-blocking protection.
Photon Freedom Micro Flashlight
A little light can go a long way, as McAlpin has found: “Using a smartphone flashlight app can drain the battery quickly — and I prefer not to pull out my smartphone in the dark for obvious reasons." So, she clips on this mini-flashlight on the outside of a crossbody bag or a jacket zipper for quick access. She says that she’s used it on almost every trip, but it came in especially handy on a late evening visit to Petra, Jordan. “Even though they had luminaries lighting up the way into the Treasury, it was still dark,” she recalls. “I used the micro flashlight so I didn't trip along the way — and shared my light with another solo woman traveler. We became fast friends.”
Sabre Runner Pepper Gel
When I was in college, my dad gave me my first pepper spray, which happened to be from Sabre. Throughout the years, it’s still the safety device that I trust the most. Ever since the unfortunate onslaught of anti-Asian hate, there’s always one in my purse or backpack. My choice model is the Sabre Runner Pepper Spray since it grips so comfortably in my palm — and even comes in a fun pink color. Thankfully, the furthest I’ve gotten to using it is clasping it tightly in dodgy situations in New York City. But there’s a relief and peace of mind that comes with feeling like I’m protected.
Pro tip: Check local laws before purchasing one since every state has different specifics for both buying and carrying pepper sprays, and remember that TSA regulations prohibit them from being packed in a carry-on and there are limits on carrying them in checked bags. One brilliant hack from Meaghan Walzak, head of North American sales at Intrepid Travel, is: “When I was traveling on a 56-day overland in Africa, my mom had me bring a whistle around with me as well as travel-sized mosquito repellant in my purse,” she says. “It works much like pepper spray, which isn’t always possible to fly with.”
GlocalMe U3 Mobile Hotspot 4G LTE Wireless Portable WiFi
Intrepid Adventure Consultant Christine Sy swears by this pocket Wi-Fi device that she’s used in more than 140 countries. “I'm able to pull it out, connect, and use Google Maps in case I get lost,” she shares. “I no longer feel anxious when I'm out and about — I just know that I will always find my way back to my starting point.” As a bonus, in hotels or vacation rentals with weak Wi-Fi, it’s also helped her stay connected.
