Star Trek: Strange New Worlds will fly among the stars for a while longer.

Paramount+ has renewed the sci-fi series for Season 4, TVLine has learned. The show is currently in production on Season 3, which eyes a 2025 debut.

In a joint statement, executive producers Akiva Goldsman, Henry Alonso Myers and Alex Kurtzman expressed their gratitude for the early renewal.

The streamer also revealed that the animated Star Trek: Lower Decks ‘ previously announced Season 5 will now be its last .

Set in the years before Kirk takes the helm of the U.S.S. Enterprise , Strange New Worlds follows Captain Christopher Pike (played by Anson Mount), Number One Una Chin-Riley (Rebecca Romijn) and Science Officer Spock (Ethan Peck) as they explore new worlds around the galaxy.

Rounding out the crew are Nurse Christine Chapel (Jess Bush), La’an Noonien-Singh (Christina Chong), Cadet Nyota Uhura (Celia Rose Gooding), Dr. M’Benga (Babs Olusanmokun) and Lt. Erica Ortegas (Melissa Navia).

In Season 2, Paul Wesley recurred as beloved future Enterprise captain James T. Kirk, and Martin Quinn debuted as iconic engineer Montgomery Scott, aka Scotty, in the finale. (Read our interview with the showrunners about Quinn’s special appearance.)

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is like Star Trek is meant to be: no season-long arcs that drag along like a rubber band but adventures of the week. I love it!

I guess one-off appeal to people with short attention spans.

i have an extremely short attention span but i love season long arcs. i also love episodic. we’re not all like gabby over there.

Or you know, fans are allowed to have different Star Trek shows that are different from one another.

Why the long wait for season 3? They did the same thing with Evil. Can’t stand Paramount.

The VFX work is very time consuming.

Next Generation managed to have 26 episodes on a consistent yearly schedule. It is ridiculous that shows air 10 episodes every 2 years.

Agreed. It’s absurd.

Shows for streaming and most countries outside the US take 9 months or so to film 10 episodes (or less) regardless of the type of show. Even US network shows can’t turn an episode around in under 8 or 9 days now, and the ones that come close to that wind up looking like expensive soap operas.

There was a strike….

The Writers and Actors strike might have something to do with it.

It takes awhile to create new worlds. The reason these shows look so good. The wait will be worth it

Glad it got renewed! Wish they would have also renewed Discovery. I enjoy the show.

Lots of Star Trek announcements recently, but people should be aware that Paramount is close to being sold (or the controlling shares being sold), so announcements now may not mean anything in a month. Whoever buys the studio would he well advised to take a minute to reassess the Star Trek situation. SNW has its fans, but the success of Picard season 3 shows that a very big audience would like to see a return to the classic Trek universe. They should probably take a minute to figure out what to do, rather than having three or four different Trek franchises floating around.

I hate it that they are making such a long pause and that it has just ten episode, it is ridiculous for a Star Trek show to be that short.

Geez Season 3 not until 2025? I could be dead by then!

Will miss Lower Decks, have enjoyed it much more than SNW and being animated gives it such fun zany stories that would not be physically possible for live action.

But I’m certain you at least watched the crossover episode last season, so it can’t be all bad.

Love Strange New Worlds. It stays close to the original canon. Discovery had potential but fell flat with it’s messaging.

seriously wtf? lower decks ending? budget for that show can’t be that high. most likely strange new worlds will end with 5th season as well given the track record of these shows lately.

Why he’ll does take so long for new seasons to be on. if there value their customers they pick up the place.

Captain Kirk should have gone aboard Star Trek: The Next Generation's Enterprise

W illiam Shatner's Captain Kirk made his final appearance on Star Trek: Generations. He, Montgomery Scott (James Doohan) and Pavel Chekov (Walter Koenig) joined the Enterprise-B for its inaugural adventure, and Kirk saves the ship from a gravimetric field and is presumed dead. From that point forward, Kirk is trapped in the Nexus while the world goes on without him. But, as Screenrant writer Rachel Hulshult points out , Generations missed out on a HUGE opportunity by not bringing Kirk aboard Captain Picard's (Patrick Stewart) Enterprise.

Generations was, essentially, a way to pass the torch from The Original Series movies to The Next Generation movies. It was the final time that Captain Kirk would have an adventure in the universe, and while he was brought back to help save that same universe...again, his presence in the movie, if utilized properly, could have made such a big difference in how it was received.

Having Shatner in this movie should have been one of the major focuses. Pairing him with Captain PIcard aboard the Enterprise would have been more of a torch-passing moment than a fight with Macolm McDowell's character, Dr. Soran. To see the two captains on the bridge of that iconic ship, one who led her and one who currently leads her, would have been a truly classical moment.

Imagine Kirk's face on seeing the differences a hundred years brought to his ship. With Kirk able to see the advancements and Picard's crew in awe of Kirk, this would have made the movie about something other than just leaving The Original Seris in the dust. And I'm wholeheartedly in agreement with Hulshult's statement that "Star Trek: Generations blew it by not having Kirk aboard Picard's Enterprise." By utilizing Kirk, Picard and his crew, and the Enteprise as a team, Generations could have made history for a better reason than the death of Captain Kirk .

Paramount+ has made two big decisions about its Star Trek universe.

Strange New Worlds has been renewed for a fourth season, while Lower Decks will end with its previously announced upcoming fifth season, expected to air sometime this year.

Meanwhile, Strange New Worlds is currently in production on its third season, which is set to debut in 2025.

“ Strange New Worlds and Lower Decks are integral to the Star Trek franchise, expanding the boundaries of the universe and exploring new and exciting worlds,” said David Stapf, president of CBS Studios. “We are extraordinarily proud of both series as they honor the legacy of what Gene Roddenberry created almost 60 years ago.”

Strange New Worlds is based on the years Captain Christopher Pike manned the helm of the  U.S.S. Enterprise . The series follows Captain Pike, Science Officer Spock, Number One and the crew of the  U.S.S. Enterprise , in the years before Captain Kirk boarded the starship, as they explore new worlds around the galaxy. It stars Anson Mount, Rebecca Romijn, Ethan Peck, Jess Bush and Christina Chong.

Star trek origin movie officially announced by paramount for 2025 release.

Paramount Pictures officially announces the next Star Trek movie at CinemaCon, which will arrive in movie theaters in 2025.

• Paramount Pictures announces new Star Trek movie for 2025, directed by Toby Haynes and written by Seth Grahame-Smith.
• Chris Pine-led Star Trek 4 remains in development, while the new film is an origin story set decades before Abrams' 2009 movie.
• Alongside the Star Trek origin movie, Paramount reveals a packed slate of exciting films for 2025-26 at CinemaCon in Las Vegas.

Paramount Pictures officially announces the next Star Trek movie, which is scheduled to arrive in theaters in 2025. As reported in January, the next Star Trek movie isn't the long-delayed, Chris Pine-led Star Trek 4 produced by J.J. Abrams, which remains in development at Paramount. Rather, the next Star Trek movie is an origin story directed by Toby Haynes ( Star Wars: Andor ) and written by Seth Grahame-Smith (A braham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter ).

Star trek's new movies in theaters and paramount plus explained, star trek is finally making movies again.

After nearly a decade, Star Trek i s back to making movies. Star Trek on Paramount+ has created a television renaissance for the franchise, but the theatrical side of Star Trek overseen by Paramount Pictures has languished in development hell since Star Trek Beyond bowed in the summer of 2016. Toby Haynes' Untitled Star Trek Origin Story is yet another prequel, but as it's said to be set decades before Star Trek 2009, it could very well be set after Star Trek: Enterprise 's mid-22nd century voyages but otherwise be an origin story for both Star Trek 's Prime and alternate Kelvin timelines .

Meanwhile, J.J. Abrams' Star Trek 4 , which is the "final chapter" of the USS Enterprise crew led by Chris Pine's Captain James T. Kirk and Zachary Quinto's Spock, has seen some movement with a new screenwriter, Steve Yockey ( The Flight Attendant ), tackling the long-delayed sequel. Pine and his fellow Star Trek actors, including Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban, and Sofia Boutella, have all expressed their eagerness to return if Star Trek 4 can come together.

It's a positive sign that Star Trek movies are finally coming back.

Paramount+ is making their own Star Trek movies, with the recently-wrapped Star Trek: Section 31 awaiting a release date. Starring Academy Award-winner Michelle Yeoh, Section 31 i s the first made-for-streaming Star Trek movie, and it is reportedly set during Star Trek 's "lost era" with connections to Star Trek: The Next Generation. Section 31 could get a sequel if successful, and the Star Trek: Picard spinoff dubbed Star Trek: Legacy may also become a streaming movie instead of a series. However all this shakes out, it's a positive sign that Star Trek movies are finally coming back.

“ Star Trek : Strange New Worlds,” currently in production on its third season, has been renewed by Paramount+ for Season 4. Meanwhile, “ Star Trek: Lower Decks ,” the first animated “Star Trek” comedy, will conclude its run on the streamer with its fifth season, which will debut in the fall.

“Lower Decks” charted brand new territory for “Star Trek” when it debuted in 2020, as both an animated comedy and a series that focused on the junior officers of the USS Cerritos: Beckett Mariner (Tawny Newsome), Brad Boimler (Jack Quaid), D’Vana Tendi (Noël Wells) and Sam Rutherford (Eugene Cordero). Set in the years following the feature film “Star Trek: Nemesis,” the series has included voice cameos from many beloved “Star Trek” alumni, like George Takei, Jonathan Frakes, Marina Sirtis, John de Lancie, Will Wheaton, Armin Shimerman, Nana Visitor and Robert Duncan McNeill.

Given its premise, concluding “Lower Decks” make sense considering the main four characters all received promotions in Season 4. But in a message to fans, Kurtzman and executive producer and showrunner Mike McMahan left the turbolift doors open for continuing the characters’ stories following their time at the bottom of the Starfleet pecking order. 

The “Star Trek” TV universe, overseen by Kurtzman through his Secret Hideout production company and produced by CBS Studios, has enjoyed a robust expansion since “Star Trek: Discovery” first premiered in 2017. Along with “Strange New Worlds,” the made-for-television movie “Star Trek: Section 31” recently concluded production with star Michelle Yeoh, and the new series “Star Trek: Starfleet Academy” will begin shooting later this year.

While most 2024 offerings arrive in October, the first ornament of the year hits stores this July, when Hallmark celebrates the 60th anniversary of “The Cage” with The Keeper . This is the Talosian leader who kept Captain Pike hostage in the original Star Trek  pilot episode; it’s priced at $19.99.

Moving into the fall’s character spotlights, Hallmark is starting with the beloved chief medical officer of the Enterprise- D: Beverly Crusher! With so many licensees often leaving Crusher out of the roster of character-themed releases, it’s nice to see Hallmark including the good doctor in their 2024 lineup.

Clad in her trademark blue coat and with trusty medical tricorder in hand, the Crusher ornament will available in October for $19.99.

Also from  The Next Generation is the first electronic ornament for 2024, recreating the encounter between Ambassador Spock and Data in “Unification II.” This ornament will be priced at $29.99 when released in October, and plays audio clips from the Next Gen episode.

For this year’s “modern  Trek ” release, Hallmark turns to  Star Trek: Strange New Worlds with an ornament featuring Captain Pike seated in his  Enterprise command chair. The base of his chair plays  Strange New Worlds audio clips, and will be available for $21.99 this October.

Moving next to Trek movie anniversaries, Hallmark celebrates the 30th anniversary of  Star Trek: Generations with the first-ever  USS Enterprise -B ornament! Hallmark’s Kevin Dilmore once highlighted the technical challenges that held back the Excelsior -class design for many years back in 2021, so it’s nice to see this long-awaited ship will make it to fans’ collections.

The Enterprise- B ornament lights up and will be available for $34.99 in October.

Star Trek: The Motion Picture also hits a big anniversary this year, and Hallmark will be honoring that milestone with a pair of miniature ornaments tied to the film. A small edition of the refit  USS Enterprise will be released at a $10.99 price point, and a small sculpt of Science Officer Spock wearing his TMP-era uniform will be $9.99. Each will be out in October.

Finally, the fan-favorite  Star Trek homage  Galaxy Quest hits its 25th anniversary this year, and Hallmark will be taking us back to 1999 with a new ornament of that film’s  NSEA Protector spaceship.

Like the other 2024 releases, the  Protector ornament will be out this October for $24.99.

Sarin was a Suliban female and former member of the Cabal . During her time in the Cabal, she received a number of genetic enhancements, including the ability to shapeshift and to measure the trustworthiness of an individual provided she was in close physical proximity to them.

Sarin eventually became disenchanted with the Cabal's activities, and formed a resistance movement with several other Cabal members. In this capacity, she met with the Klingon courier Klaang on Rigel X , and provided him with proof that the Cabal was staging attacks within the Klingon Empire in an attempt to start a civil war in 2151 . Later, Sarin and her compatriots encountered Starfleet Captain Jonathan Archer who, along with other members of his crew, had traveled to Rigel during an investigation into the whereabouts of Klaang, who had been kidnapped by the Cabal. Sarin had Archer's crew detained while she attempted to determine Archer's true intentions. Upon coming to believe that Archer was telling the truth about wanting to return Klaang to Qo'noS , Sarin released Archer's crew and offered her assistance in the completion of their mission. Sarin was murdered by Silik , however, when the group came into conflict with the Cabal. ( ENT : " Broken Bow ")

Later that year, Archer, upon learning more about the Temporal Cold War from the Temporal Agent Daniels , related to Commander Charles Tucker III and Sub-Commander T'Pol that Sarin had used the exact same term to describe the conflict, and that what she had told him seemed to align to the information relayed by Daniels, although T'Pol remained skeptical. ( ENT : " Cold Front ")

While Captain Archer was enduring imprisonment in Tandaran Detention Complex 26 , Colonel Grat questioned him about Sarin, reminding Archer that she had been "the head of a Suliban resistance cell," that he had contacted her, and that she had died during the firefight on Rigel X. ( ENT : " Detained ")

Star Trek Is Ending Another Show — But Just Renewed Its Biggest Hit

The foundational sci-fi franchise is consolidating.

2024 will see the series finales of not one, but two different distinct Star Trek series. In addition to the swan song of Discovery , it's now been revealed that Lower Decks will have its final season this year, too. At the same time, the most popular Star Trek series since The Next Generation — Strange New Worlds — will continue for at least two more seasons. If you're a casual fan, this announcement will likely be a shoulder shrug. If you’re a diehard Trekkie, you’re probably devastated.

As revealed on the official Star Trek website, the animated comedy Star Trek: Lower Decks will air its fifth season later in 2024, which, will become its finale. Simultaneously, the hit series Star Trek: Strange New Worlds — which is currently filming its third season — has been renewed for a fourth season. So, is Lower Decks really done? How long will Strange New Worlds last? And is the Star Trek TV renaissance over? Here’s what this (probably) means for the future of the Final Frontier.

Lower Decks comes to an end

Lower Decks is ending with Season 5, later in 2024.

Over on StarTrek.com, Lower Decks creator Mike McMahan and producer Alex Kurtzman issued a joint statement , confirming that “this fall will be the fifth and final season of Star Trek: Lower Decks .” Tellingly, this statement mentions that “five seasons of any series these days seems like a miracle.”

While fans are already raging about this ending, it’s worth remembering that Mike McMahan warned fans about this very real possibility in 2023. In an interview with Inverse in October 2023, McMahan made it very clear how and why Lower Decks could end, saying:

“If people want more Lower Decks , they’ve got to tune in and get a couple of other people to tune in. So instead of a letter-writing campaign, let’s all watch Lower Decks right away, please. I’m working on Season 5 right now, but by the time people realize Lower Decks has been canceled, it will be too late. We do these seasons a year in advance. So the only trick here is early and consistent viewership. That will help me make more Lower Decks .”

For all of its philosophical musings about an ideological future, Star Trek is not a nonprofit organization. The reality is, in terms of streaming numbers, it would seem that Lower Decks simply didn’t find a broader audience beyond the core group of Trek fans who watch everything. “It’s not the largest fan base,” producer Akiva Goldsman told Variety earlier this year, noting that Star Trek’s numbers are not on the level of Star Wars or Marvel. McMahan’s comment about “getting a couple of other people to tune in,” seems to support this idea. Just like in every other previous decade — and just like any other media empire — Star Trek needs mainstream crossover success to sustain multiple TV series. It is not Lower Deck’s fault that it didn’t find that mainstream crossover audience.

Strange New Worlds rising

Since 2022, the debut of Strange New Worlds has represented a kind of shift for the new era of Trek on TV. If Discovery Seasons 1-3 and Picard Season 1 were Phase I, then Strange New Worlds definitely represented Phase 2. More colorful, more buoyant, and — crucially — more accessible than its immediate predecessors, Strange New Worlds is a back-to-basics Star Trek show, that is also somewhat unapologetic about its format. Unlike most of the other shows, Strange New Worlds is mostly episodic; you can skip episodes and not feel confused. This format describes most of TV prior to the end of the 20th century, but it also highlights what kept The Original Series alive in the 1970s, after it was canceled in 1969, and, also what made The Next Generation into a bonafide mainstream hit in the 1990s. In short, the Trekkie barrier to entry is less intimidating with Strange New Worlds than with any of the other new shows.

Cynics might say that Strange New Worlds plays it safe, and that’s why it’s so much more popular than the other new shows. But Strange New Worlds actually takes a lot of risks, including, but not limited to, a musical episode , an animated crossover episode, and an ongoing, radical reimagining of one of Trek’s most iconic aliens . The cocktail that is working with SNW is fairly easy to understand: It’s a risky show disguised as a familiar one. It looks like Star Trek and feels like Star Trek to a casual fan, but rewards and validates a longtime fan, too.

The future of Star Trek on TV

Will Strange New Worlds last beyond its now greenlit Season 4? Right now, that seems very likely. Other than SNW , the only other new Star Trek series currently in production is the YA live-action series Starfleet Academy . Interestingly, Tawny Newsome — the voice of Mariner on Lower Decks — is in the writers’ room for Starfleet Academy, indicating that the Lower Decks flavor is certainly not leaving the franchise. Plus, both Kurtzman and McMahan are “hopeful” that the Lower Decks characters might pop up in other parts of the franchise. After their live-action debut in Strange New Worlds in 2023, the idea of seeing the Cerritos crew in other Trek shows feels less of a question of if, and more of a question of when.

But, for now, it seems that the Star Trek franchise on TV is consolidating a bit. Considering Paramount itself is up for sale, and possibly entering a merger with Skydance , this isn’t too surprising. The media economy isn’t exactly what it was five years ago, and the instability of the entertainment industry certainly isn’t unique to Star Trek.

This little sci-fi show has been canceled, shut down, and gone dormant before. Not having five TV shows on the air at the same time isn’t a sign of failure nor is it the end of the universe. Star Trek will endure because unlike some of its competitors, it's scrappy. That said, when you’re scrappy, you sometimes have to make hard decisions.

Lower Decks Season 5 will air on Paramount+ later in 2024. Strange New Worlds Season 3 is currently filming, while Season 4 is in development.
