journey working class man

Guys it's an American song written by Journey's keyboardist. It's about the "Bruce Springsteen" working class blue collar workers. Check out some of the lyrics (uncle Sam, simple man (lynard skynard), heart of gold (Neil young), etc. The theme was big in the 80s. But Jimmy Barnes liked it alot and made it his own. it wasn't written with Aussie battlers in mind, it just has a global message.

Dressed2Depress: Fuck you, get back in the kitchen and make my dinner bitch... its about a fucken aussie man, not women. a working class man is just an aussie that works a trade like job (electrician, mechanic, etc..) during the day and comes home to his girl... simple as...gotta love jimmy.

awesome logic, chisel, obviously australian men who actually aspire to do more with their lives than repair pipes and faulty circuits or shoot people with a differnt skin colour aren't men. This song is dated and reflects a vision of Australia which is no longer relevant. Australia is one of the most secular western countries. Who the fuck in Australia has any connection to god or a rural existence? I know I don't. I'd like to think this song is not representative of Australian men, but it probably is. It perpetuates and glorifies false myths about what it is to be Australian and male.

That is my favourite song of Jimmy Barnes then it's "No Second Prize"

A true Aussie classic, and when sung by Jimmy, it's almost a religious experience.

Adopted as an Aussie blue-collar anthem.

But it most certainly was not written with the "Aussie Battler" in mind. Written by Jonathan Cain, an American, keyboardist with Journey. Cain probably wouldn't know an Aussie Battler if he fell over him.

Still, a great song, performed brilliantly by Barnes.

working class man was originally written by Jonathan Cain but it is famously sung by Jimmy Barnes. The song was written in 1985. This song is Rock, and the song was released in 1985.

A tribute to the working class men of the 1980s, in paticular, men of Australia. A song that has made a nation respect the lives of 'the Aussie battler.'

heard of this song and thought about my father and the amount of hardship he had to go through when we came in australia to support his family. Such a great song.

one of the most popular Aussie songs as it relates to the aussie way of life. may be related to the aussie worker who is struggling.

I can't believe more aussies havn't commented. This is one of the songs that defines, what it is to be Australian.

AUSSIE, AUSSIE, AUSSIE OI, OI, OI

Go the socceroos!!!

Every comment above is absolutely correct, the aussie battler working hard to make a living and support a family. "Well he loves a little woman Someday he'll make his wife Saving all the overtime For the one love of his life" As this song personally, suits me perfectly.

Jimmy Barnes Reunites With Working Class Man Writer Jonathan Cain

by Paul Cashmere on March 15, 2014

in New Music , News

Jimmy Barnes is in Los Angeles and back in the studio working on a new album with Jonathan Cain of Journey leading a hand. Cain wrote Barnes’ signature song ‘Working Class Man’.

Jonathan Cain, from the band Journey, made it a special moment in the studio, Neal Schön from his band Journey also popped in for the session.

Barnes is working on another Rhythm and Blues record, a sequel to his 2009 no. 1 album ‘The Rhythm and the Blues’. Before you freak out thinking Jimmy is doing an album of Beyoncé and Snoop Dogg covers, we do not mean today’s (what they call) R&B. We mean the real R&B (ie: Ray Charles, Ike & Tina Turner, Bo Diddley, Little Richard).

In 2009 Jimmy paid tribute to the great Rhythm and Blues artists of the 50s and 60 with ‘The Rhythm and The Blues’ album, produced by Don Gehman, who produced ‘For The Working Class Man’ featuring the Cain song. On this new record, ex-pat Aussie Kevin Shirley (Aerosmith) is behind the desk.

The new Barnes album is expected later in 2014 and Cold Chisel fans may also get a new record as well before the year is out, according to Jimmy’s website.

Barnes was working earlier this week with Keith Urban and recorded in Sydney a few weeks back with Steve Van Zandt when Little Steven was in Australia with Bruce Springsteen.

James Dixon Swan (born 28 April 1956), better known as Jimmy Barnes, is a Scottish-born Australian rock singer-songwriter. His father Jim Swan was a prizefighter and his older brother John Swan is also a rock singer. It was actually John who had encouraged and taught Jim how to sing as he wasn't really interested at the time. His career as both a solo performer and as the lead vocalist with the rock band Cold Chisel has made him one of the most popular and best-selling Australian music artists of all time. The combination of 14 Australian Top 40 albums for Cold Chisel and 13 charting solo albums, including nine No. 1s, gives Barnes the highest number of hit albums of any Australian artist. more »

While he first earned his reputation as the swaggering frontman for legendary Australian pub rockers Cold Chisel, the success of Jimmy Barnes' subsequent solo career soon eclipsed his band's work and cemented his status as a rock icon. With his mix of bluesy hard rock with soul and R&B influences, Barnes charged through the 1980s and '90s, notching an impressive string of chart-topping albums including 1991's Soul Deep, a collection of classic soul covers. Amid occasional Cold Chisel reunions, live sets, and original albums, Barnes' affection for vintage soul and R&B music has remained a throughline in his catalog, with additional releases like 2000's Soul Deeper and 2016's Soul Searchin' also devoted to his reinterpretations. Following 2010's back-to-basics rocker Rage and Ruin, much of the remaining decade was given over to retrospectives, another Cold Chisel album, and personal projects like a 2017 children's album and a pair of memoirs, one of which, Working Class Boy, was adapted into a 2018 film. Barnes returned to original work with My Criminal Record (2019) and Flesh and Blood (2021).

Barnes was born in Glasgow, Scotland, and his family immigrated to Adelaide in 1956 when he was four. It was his older brother John's interest in music that inspired Jim to follow suit, eventually leading to him becoming lead singer of Cold Chisel, who emerged as one of Australia's most popular bands in the early '80s. While Cold Chisel's rock/soul/blues fusion music was part of the band's appeal, a large part was also the stage presence of the group's raw-voiced singer, crouching with intensity as he sang/shouted into the microphone with every breath in his lungs. After 12 years, Cold Chisel gave their final performance in December 1983 and Barnes immediately launched a solo career, eclipsing Cold Chisel's record sales with six number one solo albums in a row.

Released in October 1984, the first Jimmy Barnes album, Bodyswerve, was clearly the singer's attempt to grab Cold Chisel's audience and take them with him. Also keen to achieve the international status Cold Chisel were never able to grab, Barnes recorded extra tracks for the album's American release in Los Angeles and New York with session players Waddy Wachtel, Billy Burnette, Charlie Sexton, Mick Fleetwood, members of Little Feat, and Journey's Jonathan Caine. Caine was also involved in writing the extra songs, including "Working Class Man," which became Barnes' signature tune. For the Working Class Man became the title of his second Australian album, comprising the new tracks plus remixed versions of Bodyswerve songs. The song "Working Class Man" was featured in Ron Howard's feature film Gung Ho, renamed after the Barnes song in Australia. While Jonathan Caine was impressed to the point where he thought about asking Barnes to become Journey's singer, the American album release on Geffen did not establish Barnes outside of Australia.

Back at home, he recorded the Easybeats' "Good Times" with INXS to help promote a nationalistic package tour featuring a bill of Australia-only artists. Barnes now divided his time on the road and in the studio between Australia and America, forming a songwriting partnership with Jim Vallence (Bryan Adams) for the album Freight Train Heart, produced by Jonathan Caine. A double live album, Barnestorming, followed, before Don Gehman (R.E.M., John Mellencamp) produced Two Fires at Chapel Studios in the San Fernando Valley. The singer's biggest-selling album, Soul Deep, followed in November 1991, a tribute to his favorite soul/R&B performers of the '60s. Gehman returned to produce the grunge-era Heat, followed by Flesh and Wood, an album characterized by guest appearances from other Australian artists. In the space of nine years, Barnes had recorded eight albums and toured almost constantly, not just to satisfy the singer's love of performing but also to cater to his "live now, pay later" lifestyle. In 1994, it all caught up with him. He was forced to sell his vast property to help cover unpaid taxes and took his family to live in France, where he recorded 1995's Psyclone.

The event Cold Chisel fans dreamed of arrived in 1997, with the band re-forming for the highly anticipated The Last Wave of Summer album and tour. Barnes followed up with an 11th solo album, Love and Fear, in November 1999, peaking at number 16. During 2000, Barnes gave Don Gehman the mission of putting together a band of the best R&B players he knew back home in the United States. What followed became something of a pilgrimage for Barnes, a journey to the heart and home of the songs that shaped his tastes as a youngster, this time named Soul Deeper, and this time with musicians and singers who'd helped shape the real thing. To promote the album, Barnes brought the musicians on Soul Deeper to Australia for a national tour. In 2005, he returned with Double Happiness, an album of duets featuring Roachford, Smoky Dawson, and David Campbell. It debuted on top of the ARIAnet Albums Chart.

Heart surgery and a long recovery fueled the more introspective and subdued mood of Barnes' 2007 effort Out in the Blue, while 2009's The Rhythm and the Blues returned to rocking and nostalgic material in the style of Soul Deep and Soul Deeper. Rage and Ruin arrived in 2010 and featured the singles "God or Money" and "Before the Devil Knows You're Dead." Released in 2014, Barnes' 15th solo album, 30:30 Hindsight, was a retrospective set that featured both a greatest-hits disc and a collection of newly reworked career highlights. It marked the 30th anniversary of his solo debut and returned him to the number one spot on the charts. The following year saw another outing from the recently re-formed Cold Chisel, who embarked on a sold-out tour in support of their eighth studio album, The Perfect Crime. Soul Searchin', the fourth LP in Barnes' soul series, arrived in 2016. The following year saw the release of the Wiggles-assisted Och Aye the G Nu, his first children's album.

In 2018, Universal Pictures adapted Barnes' memoir, Working Class Boy, into a feature film of the same name. Its accompanying two-disc soundtrack featured live performances that included various songs and spoken world pieces as well as new recordings made on the film's soundstage. He followed up in 2019 with his 17th studio set, My Criminal Record. When it topped the ARIA charts in June of that year, Barnes set the record for having the most number one albums in Australian chart history. In 2021, he broke that record again with the chart-topping Flesh and Blood, which included the hit singles "Til the Next Time," "Gateway to Your Heart," and the stirring title cut. ~ Ed Nimmervoll

The Daily Scoop

Blue-collar broadway: five shows celebrating the working man.

Hard Four Productions makes their New York stage debut with the off-Broadway play Money Grubbin’ Whores , a dark comedy about a divorce set in a North Jersey pizza parlor. Hard Four was founded by director/comedian Brian Cichocki and union-electrician-turned-playwright Sean Quinn with the sole purpose to present the stories of working-class America—the divorcee in Money Grubbin’ Whores is a union guy from New York.

Money Grubbin' Whore - Off-Broadway

And while Hard Four Productions leads the charge for blue-collar Broadway ( Money Grubbin’ Whores runs at the Lion Theatre through October 19), it’s one of many shows right now spotlighting the journey of the world’s working-class. Below, we highlight four current Broadway musicals about working-class individuals in France, Ireland and the UK.

Once , Jacobs Theatre

An Irish vacuum repair man and a Czech beauty recruit a banker, a piano salesman and others to create beautiful music.

The Last Ship , Neil Simon Theatre

Sting's new musical is all about a working-class town of shipyard workers in Newcastle who are suddenly forced to build their final ship.

Les Miserables , Imperial Theatre

Not only are they working, but they are miserable. Les Miz has factory workers, soldiers, tavern owners, police men and French ladies of the oldest profession.

Kinky Boots , Al Hirschfeld Theatre

A British shoe factory owner and a fabulous London drag queen team up to create kinky boots and heels for men.

About the Show

Know before you go.

Both romantic and scary, The Phantom of the Opera is a thrilling night of theater with grand emotions. Andrew Lloyd Webber’s score, with its beloved signature song “Music of the Night,” sets the mood, but you may also find yourself humming the gorgeous period costumes and simple yet grand sets (even the famous chandelier, which probably falls slower than you’d expect, is a thrill).

A Terrorist Attack in Russia

The tragedy in a moscow suburb is a blow to vladimir v. putin, coming only days after his stage-managed election victory..

From “The New York Times,” I’m Sabrina Tavernise, and this is “The Daily.”

A terrorist attack on a concert hall near Moscow Friday night killed more than 100 people and injured scores more. It was the deadliest attack in Russia in decades. Today, my colleague Anton Troianovski on the uncomfortable question it raises for Russia’s president, Vladimir Putin. Has his focus on the war in Ukraine left his country more vulnerable to other threats?

It’s Monday, March 25.

So Anton, tell us about this horrific attack in Russia. When did you first hear about it?

So it was Friday night around 8:30 Moscow time that we started seeing reports about a terrorist attack at a concert hall just outside Moscow. I frankly wasn’t sure right at the beginning how serious this was because we have seen quite a lot of attacks inside Russia over the last two years since the full scale invasion of Ukraine, and it was hard to make sense of right away. But then within a few hours, it was really looking like we were seeing the worst terrorist attack in or around the Russian capital in more than 20 years.

On Friday night, Crocus City Hall was the venue for a concert by an old time Russian rock group called Picnic. It was a sold-out show. Thousands of people were expected to be there. And before the start of the concert, it appears that four gunmen in camouflage walked into the venue and started shooting.

We started seeing videos on social media, just incredibly awful graphic footage of these men shooting concertgoers at point blank range. In one of the videos, we see one of them slitting the throat of one of the concertgoers. And then what appears to have happened is that they set the concert hall on fire. Russian investigators said they had some kind of flammable liquid that they lit on fire and basically tried to burn down this huge concert hall with wounded people in it.

Some of these people ended up trapped as the building burned, as eventually, the roof of this concert hall collapsed. And it seems as though much of the casualties actually came as a result of the fire as opposed to as a result of the shooting.

The actual attack, it looks didn’t take more than 15 to 30 minutes. At which point, the four men were able to escape. They got into a white Renault sedan and fled the scene.

It took the authorities clearly a while to arrive. The attackers were able to spread this horrific violence for, as I said, at least 15 minutes or so. So among other things, there’s a lot of questions being raised right now about why the official response took so long.

And you said the perpetrators got away. What happened next?

So it looks like they were caught at some point hours after the attack. On Saturday morning, the Kremlin said that 11 people had been arrested in connection to the attack, including all four perpetrators. They were taken into custody according to the Russian authorities in the Bryansk region of Russia, roughly a five-hour drive from the concert hall in southwestern Russia, also pretty close to the border with Ukraine.

Obviously, we have to take everything that the Russian authorities are saying with a grain of salt. And as we’ve been reporting on this throughout the weekend, we have very much tried to verify all the claims that the Russian authorities are making independently. And so our colleagues in the visual investigations unit of the times have been working very hard on that.

And what we can say based on the footage of the attack that was taken by many different individuals and posted to social media, it very much looks like the four men who were detained who Russia says were the attackers, in fact, are the same people who were seen doing the shooting in those videos of the attack judging by their clothes, judging by their hairstyle, judging by their build and other identifying characteristics that our colleagues have been looking at. So it does appear that by Saturday morning, the men who directly carried out this attack had been taken into custody.

Wow. So the Russian government actually apprehended the perpetrators, according to our reporting work that our colleagues have done. So who are these guys?

We don’t know much about them. The Russian government says that none of them are Russian citizens. After the arrest, throughout the weekend, videos, short clips of interrogations of these men have been popping up on the Telegram social networks, clearly leaked or provided by Russian law enforcement. You see these men bloodied, hurt.

And is this Russian interrogators abusing them?

Yes. That is very much what it looks like. And it’s also notable that the Russian authorities aren’t even hiding it. Two of the suspects in those videos are heard speaking Tajik. So that’s the language spoken in Tajikistan, a Central Asian country, but also in some of the surrounding countries, including Afghanistan.

At the end of the day, this is still very much a developing situation, and there’s a ton that we don’t know. But hours after the attack, the Islamic State, ISIS, took responsibility. And they then really tried to emphasize this by even releasing a video on Saturday showing the attack taking place as it was filmed apparently by one of the attackers. And US intelligence officials have told our colleagues in Washington that they indeed believe this to be true, that they believe that this ISIS offshoot did carry out this attack.

Wow. So the Americans actually think that ISIS, the extremist group that we know so well from Iraq and Syria, carried out this attack.

Yes. And all of this is really remarkable because just a few weeks ago, on March 7, the United States actually warned publicly that something just like this could happen. The US embassy in Moscow issued a security alert, urging US citizens to avoid large gatherings over the next 48 hours. They said that the embassy is monitoring reports that extremists have imminent plans to target large gatherings in Moscow to include concerts.

Crazy. That is a very specific warning.

Absolutely. And of course, the statement mentioned that specific 48-hour time frame. But nevertheless, it feels really significant.

And did the Russian authorities respond to that?

They did, and frankly, they responded mostly by ridiculing it. This is all obviously happening against the backdrop of the worst conflict between Moscow and the West since the depths of the Cold War. And so Vladimir Putin actually publicly dismissed this warning. He called it blackmail in a speech that he gave just three days before the attack last Tuesday.

So despite the specificity publicly at least, the Russian authorities did not take it seriously.

That is remarkable. And so three days later, this huge attack happens. Where is Putin in all of this? And who is he blaming? What’s his version of events?

So he’s coming off this Russian election season, as you know, where he declared this very stage managed victory and after that had been taking a victory lap of sorts. But Putin doesn’t appear on camera until around 19 hours after the attack. At that point, Russian state television airs a five-minute speech by Putin.

[NON-ENGLISH SPEECH]

He’s sitting at this nondescript desk surrounded by two Russian flags, but it’s not clear where he is located at that point. It doesn’t look like he’s at the Kremlin.

And Anton, what does he say?

So he describes the horror of this attack. He declares Sunday a national day of mourning. He says the most important thing is to make sure that the people who did this aren’t able to carry out more violence.

He also says that the four men who carried out the attack were captured as they were moving toward Ukraine. And he claims that based on preliminary information, as he put it, there were people on the Ukrainian side who were going to help these men cross the border safely. And remember, this is an extremely dangerous militarized border given that Russia and Ukraine have been in a state of full scale war for over two years now.

And as he ends the speech, He. Says that Russia will punish the perpetrators, whoever they may be, whoever may have sent them.

So what’s important about all that is first of all, that Putin did not mention the apparent Islamic extremist connection here that Western officials have been talking about, and that is in front of all of us given that Islamic State has claimed responsibility for the attack. But he does set the stage for blaming Ukraine for this horrific tragedy, even though it seems that Putin and the Russian government may be alone in thinking that.

We’ll be right back.

So Anton, the Islamic State has claimed responsibility for this attack, but Putin ignores that and kind of obliquely points the finger at Ukraine. What do we actually know about who did this?

Well, let’s start with the group that claimed responsibility for this attack. That’s ISIS, the Islamic State. And in particular, US officials are talking about a branch of ISIS called ISIS-K or Islamic State Khorasan, which is an Islamic State affiliate that’s primarily active in Afghanistan and that in recent years has gained this reputation for extreme brutality.

They might be best known in the US for being the group behind the Kabul Airport bombing back in 2021 right after the Taliban took over when thousands of Afghans were trying to escape. That was a bombing that killed 13 American troops and 171 civilians, and it really raised ISIS case profile.

So this terrorist group is mainly based in Afghanistan. What do they want with Russia?

So what’s notable is our colleague Eric Schmitt in Washington talked to an expert over the weekend who said ISIS-K has really developed an obsession with Russia and Putin over the last two years. They say Russia has Muslim blood on its hands.

So it looks like the primary driver in this enmity against Russia is Russia’s alliance with Bashar al-Assad, the Syrian president, who is also a sworn enemy of ISIS. And Russia intervened, of course, on Assad’s behalf in the Syrian civil war starting back in 2015. But it’s not just Syria. So the experts we’ve talked to say that in the ISIS-K propaganda, you also hear about Russia’s wars in the Southern region of Chechnya in the 1990s and the early 2000s.

And also even about the Soviet Union’s war in Afghanistan throughout the 1980s. There’s this really long arc of Russia’s and the Soviet Union’s wars in Muslim regions that appears to be driving this violent hatred of Russia on the part of ISIS-K.

OK. So ISIS-K is pointing not only to Russia’s actions in Syria but actually further back into Russian history, even Soviet history, to its war in Chechnya and then to the Soviet’s war in Afghanistan. Yet Putin in his speech ignores the group entirely and instead points in the direction of Ukraine. Is there a chance that this attack could have been carried out by Ukraine?

Well, look. It is true that Ukraine has carried out attacks inside Russia that put Russian civilians at risk. There have been several bombings that American officials have ascribed to parts of the Ukrainian government. Perhaps most famously, there was the bombing that killed Darya Dugina, the daughter of a leading Russian ultranationalist back in the summer of 2022.

That was a bombing that happened just outside Moscow. And of course, there have been various drone strikes by Ukraine against things like Russian energy infrastructure even just in the last few weeks. But we really don’t see any evidence right now of any connection of the Ukrainian state to this attack. US officials tell us they don’t see anything, and we haven’t in our own reporting come across such a connection either.

And there is, of course, the context of the US has said very clearly that they don’t want to see Ukraine carrying out big attacks inside Russia. American officials have said that doing so is counterproductive, could lead to the risk of greater escalation by Putin in his war. And we’re in an extremely sensitive time right now when it comes to US support for Ukraine.

The US, of course, has given all these weapons, tens of billions of dollars in aid to Ukraine. But right now, $60 billion in aid are stuck in US Congress. And you would think that Ukraine wouldn’t want to do anything right now —

That could risk that.

That could risk that. Exactly. I mean, also, let’s just say, I mean, this was an incredibly horrific attack, and we haven’t seen anything from Ukraine in the way they’ve carried themselves in defending against Russia in this war that would make us think they would be capable of doing something like this.

Anton, just to step back for a moment. I mean, it’s interesting because this attack, it really doesn’t remotely fit into Putin’s obsession about where the threat is coming from in the world to Russia, right? His obsession is Ukraine. And this kind of short circuits that.

Absolutely. I mean, Russia has had a real Islamic extremism problem for decades going back to the 1990s to those brutal wars against Chechen separatists that were a big part of Putin coming to power and developing his strongman image.

So it’s really remarkable how we’ve arrived at this turning point here for Putin where he used to be someone who really portrayed himself as the man keeping Russians safe from terrorism. Now the threat of terrorism coming from Islamic extremists doesn’t really fit into that narrative that Putin has because now Putin’s narrative is all about the threat from Ukraine and the West and that the most important thing to do now for Russian national security is to win the war against Ukraine.

And does the security failure here have anything to do with Russia actually being obsessed with Ukraine? Like it’s kind of taken its eye off the ball?

Well, look. The Russian domestic intelligence agency, the FSB, they’re the ones who are supposed to keep the country safe from terrorism. But that has also been the agency that has been charged with asserting control over the territories in Ukraine that Putin has occupied, and the FSB has been spending all this time hunting down dissidents of Putin.

Just a few hours before the attack on Friday, Russia officially classified the so-called LGBT movement, as they put it, on their list of terrorists and extremists. So terrorists in the current Putin narrative are anyone who disagrees with him, who criticizes the war, and who doesn’t fit into the Kremlin’s conception of so-called traditional values, which has become such a big Putin talking point.

So the FSB has been pretty busy but not in terms of Islamic terrorism. In terms of its own people.

Exactly. We don’t know for sure obviously how the FSB is apportioning its resources, but there’s a lot of reason to believe that as the leadership of that organization has been looking at Putin’s priorities in Ukraine and in terms of cracking down on dissent domestically, they could well have lost sight of the risks of actual terrorism inside Russia.

Which is pretty remarkable, right, Anton? Because you and I know and we’ve spoken a lot about on the show, a big part of the reason that Putin actually appeals, his argument to Russians is that he’s the security guy. Think what you will about him. He’s the guy who’s fundamentally going to keep you safe. And here we have this attack.

That’s right. And so he needs to continue making the case that he knows how to keep Russia safe. And that’s why my colleagues and I have been watching a lot of Russian state TV this weekend. And this ISIS claim of responsibility barely comes up. And when it does come up, it’s often being referred to as fake news. Instead, Russian propaganda is already assuming that it was Ukraine and the West that did this. We’ll see if the Russian public buys that.

But if you look at the way the last two years have gone in Russia, I think you have to draw the conclusion that Russian propaganda is extremely powerful. And I think if this message continues, it’s quite likely that very many Russians will believe that Ukraine and the West had something to do with this attack.

And so the worry now, as we look ahead, is that Putin could end up using this to try to escalate his war even further, which shows us why this is such a tenuous and perilous moment because at the same time, this attack reminds us that Russia faces other security risks. And as Putin deepens that conflict with the West, he may be doing so at the cost of introducing even more instability inside the country.

Anton, thank you.

Thank you, Sabrina.

Late Sunday night, the four men suspected of carrying out the concert hall attack were arraigned in a court in Moscow and charged with committing an act of terrorism. All four are from Tajikistan but worked as migrant laborers in Russia. They range in age from 19 to 32 and face a maximum sentence of life in prison. Also on Sunday, Russian authorities said that 137 bodies had been recovered from the charred remains of the concert hall, including those of three children.

Here’s what else you need to know today.

In January, I underwent major abdominal surgery in London, and at the time, it was thought that my condition was non-cancerous. The surgery was successful. However, tests after the operation found cancer had been present.

In a video message on Friday, Catherine, Princess of Wales, disclosed that she’d been diagnosed with cancer and has begun chemotherapy, ending weeks of fevered speculation about her absence from British public life.

This, of course, came as a huge shock, and William and I have been doing everything we can to process and manage this privately.

In her message, Middleton did not say what kind of cancer. She had or how far it had progressed but emphasized that the diagnosis has required meaningful time to process.

It has taken me time to recover from major surgery in order to start my treatment. But most importantly, it has taken us time to explain everything to George, Charlotte, and Louis in a way that’s appropriate for them and to reassure them that I’m going to be OK.

a ship is stuck under a bridge

Baltimore bridge collapse: at least six missing as Biden laments ‘terrible accident’

Mayor says rescue efforts continuing after cargo vessel hit Francis Scott Key Bridge, sending vehicles into the water

A frantic search-and-rescue effort continued on Tuesday hours after a major bridge in Baltimore , Maryland, snapped and collapsed when a container ship collided with it in the early morning, sending a number of vehicles into the water.

Baltimore fire department officials said at least six construction workers were still missing, after reports that a 948ft Singapore-flagged container ship leaving port on its way to Sri Lanka had crashed into the Francis Scott Key Bridge.

Jeffrey Pritzker, a senior executive at Brawner Builders, the employer of the construction workers, said Tuesday afternoon that they were presumed dead, given the water’s depth and the length of time since the crash. Pritzker said the crew had been working in the middle of the bridge when it came apart. No bodies have been recovered. “This was so completely unforeseen,” Pritzker said. “We don’t know what else to say. We take such great pride in safety, and we have cones and signs and lights and barriers and flaggers. But we never foresaw that the bridge would collapse.”

A report from the Baltimore Banner earlier said the were construction workers from El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Mexico who are in their 30s and 40s, with spouses and children.

Officials added that up to 20 people and several vehicles had fallen into the river and declared it a “mass casualty event”.

A video posted on X appeared to show the vessel striking one of the bridge’s central supports, causing much of the 2.6km bridge to give way as a number of vehicles fell into the Patapsco River below.

Joe Biden addressed the bridge collapse in a public briefing about midday, saying that all indications were that it was a “terrible accident” rather than an “intentional act”.

The president also said he was thinking of those who remained unaccounted for amid the search and rescue efforts around the bridge, a key traffic artery whose destruction is also expected to cause months of travel disruption in a city with more than 575,000 residents.

“We’re with you. We’re going to stay with you as long as it takes,” said Biden, adding that he intended to travel to Baltimore as soon as possible. “You’re Maryland tough. You’re Baltimore strong.”

Officials said the ship issued a mayday as it went off course and seemed to lose power, which Baltimore officials said allowed them to prevent more vehicles from coming on to the bridge. The ship then appeared to catch fire as part of the bridge collapsed over it, sending plumes of thick, black smoke into the air.

Two people have been rescued, with one of them “severely” injured and in critical condition, officials said in a pre-dawn press conference. There were reports that there were workers on the bridge engaged in basic road maintenance when the collision occurred.

The temperature in the river was about 47F (8C) in the early hours of Tuesday, according to a buoy that collects data for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

From a vantage point near the entrance to the bridge, jagged remnants of its steel frame were visible protruding from the water, with the on-ramp ending abruptly where the span once began. “All lanes closed both directions for incident on I-695 Key Bridge. Traffic is being detoured,” the Maryland transportation authority posted on X. “I-695 Key Bridge collapse due to ship strike. Active scene,” it later added.

Calls to 911 had come in at about 1.30am, reporting a vessel travelling outbound from Baltimore that had struck a column on the bridge, causing it to collapse, said Kevin Cartwright, the director of communications for the Baltimore fire department. Several vehicles were on the bridge at the time, including one the size of a tractor-trailer.

“Our focus right now is trying to rescue and recover these people,” Cartwright said. He added that it was too early to know how many people were affected but described the collapse as a “developing mass casualty event”.

Cartwright said it appeared that there were “some cargo or retainers” that appeared to be dangling from the bridge, creating unsafe and unstable conditions that were complicating the rescue operation. “This is a dire emergency,” he said.

Matthew West, a petty officer first class for the coastguard in Baltimore, told the New York Times that the coastguard received a report of an impact at 1.27am ET. West said the Dali, a 948ft (290-metre) Singapore-flagged cargo ship, had hit the bridge, which is part of Interstate 695.

The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) confirmed that the vessel was registered in Singapore and said the agency was coordinating with the US Coast Guard and the ship’s management company to help. It also said it would investigate the incident itself.

There were 22 crew onboard at the time of the incident, Singapore said.

The shipping company Maersk said that it chartered the container ship in Baltimore, with the operator named as Synergy Marine Group. Maersk confirmed that there were 22 crew, and said they were all Indian. None of them were Maersk crew or personnel.

It added that there were 4,679 containers on board, roughly half of its 10,000 capacity.

“We are horrified by what has happened in Baltimore, and our thoughts are with all of those affected,” the company said in a statement.

The Dali had left Baltimore at 1am and was heading for the Sri Lankan capital, Colombo, according to the maritime data platform MarineTraffic. Synergy Marine Group, the manager of the Dali, confirmed that the ship had collided with one of the pillars of the bridge. It said all crew members, including the two pilots, had been accounted for and there were no reports of any injuries.

“Whilst the exact cause of the incident is yet to be determined, the Dali has now mobilised its qualified individual incident response service,” it said.

The same vessel was also involved in a collision in 2016 in Antwerp, Belgium, according to Vessel Finder and the maritime incident archive Shipwrecklog.

Its bow reportedly scraped the side of the quay while it was leaving port, significantly damaging several meters of the hull, and it was reportedly detained by authorities afterward.

According to Vessel Finder , the weather was fine at the time and the incident was blamed on the ship’s master and pilot on board. There were reportedly no injuries.

The Baltimore mayor, Brandon M Scott, called Tuesday’s collision an “unthinkable tragedy” at a press conference held as dawn broke on Baltimore. “Never would you imagine” seeing the bridge collapse, he added. “It looked like something out of an action movie.”

Asked how long it would take to rebuild the bridge, he said: “The discussion right now should be about the people, the lives, the souls … there are people in the water that we have to get out and that’s the only thing we should be talking about.”

He and the county executive, Johnny Olszewski Jr, said emergency personnel were at the scene and rescue efforts were under way.

Officials added that there was “absolutely no indication that there was any terrorism or that this was done on purpose”.

The Maryland governor, Wes Moore, said in a statement that he had declared a state of emergency.

He said the ship had lost power around the time when the cargo ship hit the Key Bridge, and the crew issued a “mayday” request. Moore said that officials were able to slow the flow of traffic, preventing more vehicles from falling into the water.

“These people are heroes. They saved lives last night,” Moore said, adding that Baltimore was working with an interagency government team to quickly deploy federal resources from the Biden administration.

Moore added the bridge was “fully up to code” before Tuesday’s accident and that rebuilding the bridge would be a long-term effort.

In a statement, the White House said it was “closely monitoring” the events. “The US Coast Guard is conducting search and rescue for those who remain unaccounted for as a result of the bridge collapse,” it said. “Senior White House officials are in touch with the governor and mayor to offer any federal assistance they need. There is no indication of any nefarious intent.”

It added that “our hearts go out” to the victims and families of what it called a “horrific incident”.

Built in 1977, the bridge spans the Patapsco River, a vital artery that along with the Port of Baltimore is a hub for shipping on the US’s east coast. It is named for the author of the American national anthem, The Star-Spangled Banner.
