South Australian football fans are invited to share the exciting lead-up to next month’s FIFA Women’s World Cup Australia & New Zealand 2023™ as the Original trophy spends the next three days touring the state.

As part of the FIFA Women's World Cup™ Trophy Tour campaign “Going Beyond”, the trophy will take a quick trip to the Barossa, drop in to Illuminate Adelaide and the Art Gallery of South Australia – as well as giving fans in Victoria Square, Rundle Mall and Gepps Cross a chance to get up close.

Jacob's Creek and Pernod Ricard Winemakers Global Marketing Director Eric Thomson said: "We are beyond thrilled that the FIFA Women's World Cup Trophy will be visiting the Barossa and spending time at Jacob's Creek Cellar Door. We're excited for the local community to come together over a drop worth sharing and celebrate what will be a historic national event.

South Australia is the latest stop on its official tour, which began on 8 June and has visited each of the 32 countries taking part in the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023™ as part of a mission to celebrate future football talent and build excitement ahead of the tournament.

Minister for Sport and Recreation and Minister for Women Katrine Hildyard, FIFA Beyond Greatness™ Champion Bruce Djite, Football Australia Head of Commercial and Events Tom Rischbieth and former CommBank Matilda Sacha Wainwright gathered at Hindmarsh Stadium this morning to welcome the trophy.

The Trophy Tour precedes the FIFA Women’s World Cup Australia & New Zealand 2023™ which starts on 20 July. An upgraded Hindmarsh Stadium will see England, Brazil, China PR, Korea Republic, Morocco, Haiti and Panama play across four group-stage matches on 24, 28 and 30 July and 1 August 2023, as well as a Round of 16 match on 8 August 2023.

The event is expected to have a global viewing audience of more than two billion people, with a further 1.5 million fans expected to fill stadiums across Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand.

Minister Hildyard said the tour reinforced the scale and significance of the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023™ and the legacy it will leave.

“This is so exciting for our state – we will see the best football, welcome fans to our state, grow participation and advance meaningful and lasting change – through the tournament itself and through the significant legacy events we are holding including the global women in leadership symposium The Power of Her – set for 8 August.

Valentine's Day

The Weird, Mysterious History of Valentine’s Day

32 teams, 64 games, and one golden trophy to lift high. The FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023 is here, and the city of Adelaide is one of the ten host cities for the tournament. However, getting a ticket to watch the games is no joke.

Hindmarsh Stadium will be the home of the action during the games, but Australia won’t be playing any of their group-stage games in the city. Even if we make it through to the first few rounds, Hindmarsh won’t be hosting any of those games either.

That means that, if you’re based in the SA capital , you’re going to need a good spot to enjoy all of the action.

The very best of The Latch delivered straight to your inbox.

Thankfully, Adelaide has no shortage of great places to watch all of the World Cup action from. Whether you’re just backing the Matildas or you’re interested in watching all of the games, you have some options to choose from.

These spots are likely to fill up quickly as fans flock to support their teams. To ensure you get yourself the best seat in the house, it’s wise to plan ahead and arrive early.

Grab your national scarf and get ready to lock in at one of Adelaide’s top venues for joining the passionate crowd, indulging in great food and drink, and witnessing the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023 unfold in all its glory.

Where to Watch the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Adelaide

The Matildas have three confirmed games against Ireland, Canada, and Nigeria, making it a relatively challenging group stage for us. If we make it out of the group stage, we’ll be through to the instant elimination rounds.

Timetables and coverage of the later games are still to be confirmed depending on where we place, but the three confirmed group stage games will be held on:

  • Thursday, 20 July at 8pm – Australia vs Ireland
  • Thursday, 27 July at 8pm – Australia vs Nigeria
  • Monday, 31 July at 8pm – Australia vs Canada

Free Outdoor Live Screens in Adelaide Showing the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023

An image showing the Adelaide Festival Plaza, where the 2023 FIFA womens world cup will be shown.

Festival Plaza

The newly-made over Festival Plaza on King William Road is the site of the FIFA Fan Festival. The football association is working in collaboration with all host cities to provide free live screenings of the games, and Adelaide is no exception.

Football isn’t the only excitement on offer though. The Fan Festival will also play host to top Aussie musical acts – including Kimbra, San Cisco, and Montaigne – to keep the crowds pumped up between matches.

Culinary offerings are overseen by food enthusiast and MasterChef contestant Callum Hann. Hann is bringing his love for South Australian produce to the festival grounds with a menu inspired by the international influences of the Cup.

The festival site will be open most days across the tournament, from 20 July to 30 August. However, not every single game will be screened, so it’s best to check the event website for specifics as these are subject to change.

Rest assured though, Festival Plaza will be the place to be during the Matilda’s matches, the group stage games, the quarters, semis, and grand finals.

The Rosey, City

Following a major facelift a few years back, the former Rosemont Hotel has transformed into The Rosey, one of the city’s premier sports bars. The venue now boasts seven big indoor screens plus a projector and full surround sound to bring you right into the action. It’s about as ‘sports bar’ as you can get, with a lively crowd and cold beer on tap. Every game from the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup will be on the screens here.

Brighton Metro, Brighton

The newly renovated 175-year-old Brighton Metro Hotel boasts a terrace bar, mezzanine, garden room, and a beer garden. The Matildas’ games and the all-important knock-out round matches will be playing on all screens, including the massive projection one in the slick beer garden. Plus, the Metro is offering ‘Whistle to Whistle’ packages at $65pp for unlimited drinks and a main. They’re also running penalty shootout comps at halftime, so get practicing your shots.

The District at Skycity, City

The District at Skycity is turning over their modern industrial stylings to World Cup madness. All games from the tournament will be shown live and free on their 20-metre big screen in the sports bar. Only the freshest beers from the Pirate Life brewery will be on tap, and $4.00 happy hour schooners start from 4.00pm, Monday to Friday. With a 450-cap venue, the atmosphere is sure to be electric.

Kent Town Hotel, Kent Town

The historic Kent Town Hotel has recently emerged from its $7 million facelift and is back once again to serve the good people of Adelaide. The Victorian-era establishment has kept much of its original charm and even added a Candy Room in tribute to its Old World roots. The Pub is celebrating the World Cup with all Australian games and later matches on the big screens around the venue.

The Elephant, City

Looking like a relic from the Tudor era, The Elephant British pub is exactly where you’d expect to find the football crowds during World Cup season. With a massive selection of both Aussie and European beers on draught, the English Premier League regularly on the TV, and a strong menu packed with comfort eats, The Elly has you covered. They’re showing all the Matildas’ games, plus a few others, and will have all the knockout round and finals games action.

Roberta Moretti Avery: When you bring the Trophy Tour to cities like Poços de Caldas, you bring a sense of belonging to the wider world of cricket

The ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 Trophy Tour will have an incredible effect on Brazilian cricket and its growth in the country.

When you bring such an important event, like the Trophy Tour, to cities like Poços de Caldas, a cricket development city, you bring a sense of belonging to the wider world of cricket.

Sometimes when you’re growing the sport in countries that don’t have the same tradition as others, it’s difficult for children, players and coaches, to see what the big picture looks like - and it’s important for them to see they’re part of the big picture.

Real feelings from the @brasil_cricket group now…. pic.twitter.com/WXDmnG3dUv — Roberta Moretti Avery (@MorettiAvery) March 30, 2024

Our aim with the tour was to give every important part of Cricket Brazil a taste of the trophy. Because it's such a special, and unique, moment for Brazil, we wanted to make sure every step of our development was covered, so we could all live this together, and so there is a link between the tournament and Cricket Brasil.

Cricket has been in the country since 1872, before football was played here, but football took off and cricket is only now becoming more popular. We want children to be inspired when they see the trophy and become more dedicated to the sport, but we also want to use cricket as a way of improving people’s lives.

Roberta Moretti Avery

The Trophy Tour will also have a huge impact on youth cricket in Brazil. Especially when the younger players, or children interested in the sport, feel the connection between the World Cup and the sport they play.

Having the trophy in Poços de Caldas increased the enthusiasm for cricket for a lot of kids, and you could see the smiles and felt the energy from the children on the days the trophy was here.

One day these kids are going to be thinking about the World Cup as part of their development, and you’re seeing them find out how the sport they currently love is part of something as big as the cricketing world.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by ICC T20 World Cup (@t20worldcup)

Because the cricket project in Poços de Caldas is extremely organised, we ended up creating various different ways for children to get involved. We have programs for kids that just want to play and have fun, for kids that want to attend university, become coaches and give back to the community, and also for kids that are extremely talented and want to be a part of the national teams.

As it started small and focused on the key elements - sustainability, fun, and inclusivity - cricket in Brazil and Pocos de Caldas, and the whole cricketing world, can change communities and improve kids’ lives.

I have been involved with cricket for 11 years now, mostly as a player, and with Cricket Brasil for eight years, and the changes I have seen in kids, in projects, and programs, has been amazing.

During this trophy tour, we were joined by Michel Assuncao, who came from one of the more violent areas of Poços de Caldas. He started in the cricket project at the age of 12, and his talent was spotted very quickly, and now, he is considered a role model in his old community. The kids look at him and think: 'I want to be like Michel', because he’s travelled all over South America and became the first person in his family to attend university. And that all happened because of cricket.

But the biggest thing for me is how it affects girls, because, unfortunately, opportunities for them to play sports in Brazil are very rare. We want girls to be a part of the project, and want them to play, but we want them to grow as role models and as leaders, and that’s something that Cricket Brasil does well.

'Been whispering in his ears' - Powell is trying to get Narine to play T20 World Cup

  • ESPNcricinfo staff

Is Sunil Narine being coaxed into coming out of international retirement for the T20 World Cup in the Caribbean and USA that follows IPL 2024?

Three nights ago, Narine, who had announced his international retirement in November 2023, was dead certain he'd be watching the tournament from home. But on Tuesday night, after hitting a magnificent century to power Kolkata Knight Riders to 223 for 6, Narine gave an inkling of that stance changing.

"It is what it is, but let's see what the future holds," Narine said after the match when asked if he'd reconsider his decision to retire.

After the match, Rovman Powell , West Indies' T20I captain, revealed he'd been trying to change Narine's mind through every channel possible.

"For the last 12 months, I've been whispering in his (Narine's) ears, but he's blocked out everyone," Powell said when asked about trying to convince Narine to reverse his decision. "I've asked [Kieron] Pollard, [Dwayne] Bravo, [Nicholas] Pooran. Hopefully, before they select the team, they can crack his code."

Powell himself was a key contributor to the game, hitting 26 off 13 at a crucial time of the chase. He came into his own in the 17th over, when he took apart Narine for a four and two back-to-back sixes in a 16-run over that left Royals needing 46 off the back three.

They eventually got home off the last delivery when Jos Buttler, who struck his second century of the competition, heaved Harshit Rana's slower ball into the leg side with the scores level.

Powell was one of Royals' big-ticket auction signings at INR 7.4 crore, but opportunities have been far and few. Tuesday at the Eden Gardens was just his second outing with the bat this season, but he was all praise for the team management.

"The morale in the team is very good, even when I am not playing the communication has been very good and as an international player, I really appreciate when the communication is precise and clear," he said. "The guys are in good space and long may that continue."

Powell was also asked tongue-in-cheek if he'd been whispering into Kumar Sangakkara's [director of cricket] ear about a batting promotion.

"I told them, 'hey, I bat at No. 4 or 5 for West Indies and if you think West Indies is a good T20 side, then you can push me up the order," he said with a chuckle. "We have got a few days off now and I will keep ringing it in their (the management) ears."

Powell likened the emotions at the end to that of a roller-coaster ride as Royals pulled off IPL's highest successful chase. He also revealed he went out to bat with not set plans of taking down spin, and was merely reacting to the situation.

"The emotions are all over the place at the moment," he said. "I didn't plan to take on Sunil, I knew he's their best bowler, but when it comes down to 80 off 30, you have to take your chances. I backed my strengths, took my chances and came off today."
