Moscow Out-Dubai’s Dubai with World’s Largest Structure

It’s getting hard to keep up with the growing number of “world’s biggest” buildings. After Dubai and Taipei’s short-lived fame, it’s now Moscow’s turn to boast one of these towering structures.

The city is to build a 1500 ft high structure that will accommodate 30,000 residents with room for 900 apartments, 3000 hotel rooms and several cultural and exhibition facilities. At 27 m sq. ft. the floor space promises to be four times bigger than the Pentagon, and the building will be twice as wide as London’s Millennium dome.

Named Crystal Island after its glass facade that resembles cut crystal, the structure will also contain one of Moscow’s largest and highest open spaces, offering terrific views from 980 ft high platforms.

Although critics have already dismissed it as vulgar, Lord Foster – the designer of the building – is ecstatic of the scope of his ambitious project. Crystal Island is slated to be completed in five year’s time.

One expert said the building demonstrates Russia’s “might,” and personifies Moscow’s “boldly thrusting” personality. Does anybody else think the connection between men and fancy sports cars is also true for the buildings they create?

Inside the home of artist Claudia Rubinstein, an Aladdin's cave of trinkets and treasures

It's not often you meet someone who literally lives in a world of their own imagination, but that's what makes artist Claudia Rubinstein such an endearing character.

Wearing a feathered, tiara-like headdress, and sparking cats-eye glasses, the softly spoken former nurse, who moved to Australia from Canada in 1986, radiates all the whimsy and angelic grace of a mythical fairy godmother from one of her imagined worlds.

"I've been drawing and painting since I was a little girl," reflects the artist, who has German heritage.

She remembers how she would create living spaces for her dolls, using toothpaste caps as tea sets.

"I love miniature worlds, little animals and anthropomorphic states and a lot my inspiration has come from the stories I heard as a young child."

Listening to the Brothers Grimm fairytales, read by Danny Kaye on her LP player as a child, she relished in the voices and vivid descriptions.

"It just took me into the wonderful world of the imagination. I love to think of little mice wearing jackets and frogs wearing suits and that sort of thing," she says.

She was a featured artist at last year's Fish Creek Children's Festival of Stories, and Rubinstein returns to the town in Victoria's South Gippsland this autumn with two events: a maritime edition of her Claudia's Imaginarium exhibition and a Mad Hatter's Tea Party event.

Worlds of fantasy

Once described as "Graeme Base on steroids", Rubinstein has accumulated a vast back catalogue of vibrant sketches, oil, acrylic and watercolour paintings, 3D polymer clay pieces, sculptures, and jewellery, bead and textile pieces over her lifetime.

Growing up on an acreage property in Canada, she was inspired by the mystical labyrinths of nature, imagining stories about the swamp frogs, tadpoles, birch trees, lichen, moss and mushrooms in the forest.

It was a lexicon that she would later carry into her own artwork, where magical creatures, fairies, frogs, snails, toadstools and jewelled ornaments co-exist in surreal and satirical narrative vignettes.

From married frogs eating jewelled insects for lunch, to a bird and an owl playing chess together, her quaint scenarios carry all the absurdity and charm of an Alice in Wonderland or Wind in the Willows anecdote.

Embracing the lyrical wit of late 19th and early 20th century English children's authors, Rubinstein even writes accompanying poetry, songs and fables for some of her characters.

Her elaborate jewelled and beaded teapots and luminous polymer jellyfish lamps exemplify a unique talent for transforming the most inanimate of objects and unremarkable of creatures into sentient, sacred beings.

"There's something very lyrical about a jellyfish underwater, that lovely undulation as the tentacles of the jellyfish come up and come down again, that pulsing, breathing, ballet movement that happens under the water," she says.

"It's the same thing with a snail, the snail moves so slowly and it's absolutely mesmerising."

An Aladdin's cave

Having remained largely anonymous and reclusive from the art world and the public eye, Rubinstein's work stays permanently on private display at her 128-year-old home that she shares with her husband in Hawthorn.

An Aladdin's cave of trinkets, treasures and floor-to-ceiling art, there are three bohemian boudoir studios; one for painting, one for beading and one for polymer clay and sculpture.

"People say it's more like a museum than a home, the walls are different colours and there is art from top to toe, sculptures and garden pieces," Rubinstein says.

"It's a real cornucopia of colour and form all throughout, with fantastical images and imaginary pieces, jellyfish chandeliers and jellyfish lights."

With clutter crowding every mantle piece, cabinet and side table surface, Rubinstein's ornaments, books and pictures are typically colour coded in tones of gold, crimson, pink, green and aquamarine.

On entering the home, the entrance hallway boasts a pastiche of floor-to-ceiling gilded portraits.

Channelling the Palace of Versailles, the regal grandeur extends to the ornate guest bedroom, where a gilded bed fit for a French queen is immersed in a deep, dark forest mural.

With paintings extending into the high ceilings, chandeliers, mosaics, mirrors and pot plants framing antique chaise lounges, it's hard not to be overwhelmed by Rubinstein's opulent aesthetic.  

Even the bathroom references a Garden of Eden, with a vertical garden feature wall in the open shower tub providing a satirical backdrop for the next showering Adam or Eve.

"My house is full of all my memories, my treasures, my experiences, my creations," Rubinstein says.

Taking pride of the art of staging her treasures, she finds much joy in taking the odd, unsuspecting taxi driver, tradesman or curious stranger that she meets up the street on a royal tour.

The power of a vivid imagination

Behind the illusion of a seemingly carefree lifestyle governed by whim of fantasy and creativity, Rubinstein's life has not been without challenges.

Having lost her youngest son to suicide a few years ago, and now living with the debilitating effects of onset Parkinson's disease, she finds great comfort in the mediative and therapeutic benefits of creativity.

"The thing about the imagination is it gives everyone a safe place to reside, it's a place for hope, a place for peace, a place for dreams," she says.

"The other day I had to have an MRI, and while I was in the machine, they continually kept asking me, 'Are you OK?'

"I was absolutely fine, I was off in a painting that I was creating and thinking about what I would do when I got home."

Often finding herself making polymer teapots into the early hours, she says that having a vivid imagination can be an all-consuming, manic and even addictive affair, often interfering with her sleep patterns.

But the empowering aspects of creating something from nothing, and being able to shift one's mindset and energy, are ultimately life-affirming.

"People talk about manifesting, thinking about something, then seeing it clearly, then it will occur — well that's exactly what happens in the creative process," she says.

"The imagination is very powerful. I'm very grateful I've been gifted with one — I've been very fortunate."

NEW YORK – James Monroe Iglehart’s mom took him to see the animated Disney movie “Aladdin” as a high-school graduation gift in 1992. He fell in love with the Genie, naturally.

Fast-forward more than two decades and Iglehart found himself playing the first Genie on Broadway, killing it, and on his way to a Tony Award.

“To play the role that I loved so much and be able to be my full, silly self with the volume at 20 to 25 and go crazy was just so cathartic,” he says.

“Aladdin” turns 10 this month and it has done more than become Broadway's go-to for young people experiencing their first musical. It has also become an incubator for Black actors like Iglehart leading a big Disney musical with joy and humor.

There are currently Genies on Broadway and on tour in the United Kingdom and United States, in Japan and Spain, all doing cartwheels, high kicking and singing “Friend Like Me." They call it a Genie Brotherhood.

“I kind of just tell the guys, ‘Listen, make sure that you give your authentic self. You don’t have to play it like me,’” Iglehart says. “As long as you bring your brand of silliness and comedy and heart and realness to it, the audience will accept it.”

After 'Aladdin," Iglehart went on to land TV and voice work, the Broadway dual roles of Marquis de Lafayette and Thomas Jefferson in “Hamilton,” King Arthur in the new “Spamalot” revival and will next star as Louis Armstrong in “A Wonderful World.”

“It’s made me the actor I am today. And it’s given me a legacy that I can be thoroughly proud of,” he says. “It changed my life.”

At the Tony Awards in 2014, Iglehart sang, danced and lifted one of the coveted statuettes for best featured actor in front of millions of viewers.

Hundreds of miles away, a Genie-to-be was watching, his life changing.

‘A very special way to start my career’

Marcus Martin was 16 at the time, an aspiring actor in Akron, Ohio, who sat transfixed as Iglehart filled the Tony stage.

“I was always told that I would have a hard time in this business because the best roles were for skinny white tenors, and I’m not any of those things,” says Martin. “So seeing James gave me permission to dream a new dream.”

He had grown up going to Broadway shows with his mom when they came through Ohio. Watching the Tony telecast, he decided he would one day play the Genie and began memorizing the music and lines. Naturally, he and his mom saw “Aladdin” when the first national tour came to Cleveland.

He graduated Baldwin Wallace University in May 2020 — not the best time to have a degree in performing live for large groups of people. But he persisted. He auditioned for Disney four times and got his dream role.

He is now the Genie on the second national tour.

He started in Schenectady, New York, and has performed in over 50 cities, from Little Rock, Arkansas, to Los Angeles. He's geeked out over playing historic venues like The Fabulous Fox Theatre in St. Louis and the Fox Theatre in Atlanta.

“I’m such a theater nerd. I always say I’m a fan first, actor second,” he says. Martin likes to look for famous autographs on the walls or under desks in his new dressing rooms.

“All the greats, and some that I’ve even looked up to as a young performer, I’m now in the same space as them, sharing dressing rooms,” he says. “This is a very special way to start my career.”

He has become friends with Iglehart and the two were joined by a third Genie before Martin went to lead the tour. “They took me to lunch to kind of send me off and give me the secrets of the lamp,” says Martin.

That third Genie is Michael James Scott — the Genie that Martin and his mom saw when “Aladdin” came to Cleveland.

‘Broadway was always a dream’

Disney has a gravitational pull in Orlando, Florida, where Scott grew up. He performed as a younger man in the theme parks and at special events, always readying for the spotlight in New York.

“Broadway was always a dream of mine since I was a little boy,” he says.

Scott is a Broadway veteran by now, with credits in “Mama Mia!” "Tarzan," “Elf” and “Something Rotten!” But he calls Genie “one of those once-in-a-lifetime roles. It’s like everything in the kitchen sink in one role.”

He led the first national tour of “Aladdin” and played the Genie in London's West End. He originated the role when the show went to Australia and was deeply moved when a group of Aboriginal children came to see him in their very first Broadway tour.

“The Genie is love, light, laughter and people want to have that right now,” Scott says. “To be that person for young people to look out to see and also as a person of color and what that really means in representation, is something I don’t hold lightly.”

These days, he's the proud Genie on Broadway.

“If this little chocolate, chubby child from Orlando, Florida, could one day grow up to be the Genie in ‘Aladdin’ on Broadway and around the world, anything is possible,” he says.

As the show celebrates its 10th anniversary, Scott has an idea why it has lasted. “It does not apologize for being this big Broadway musical, epic comedy,” he says. “Don't you want to have joy?”

Experience Russia in Dubai – Moscow Hotel

During my first 7 years of stay in Dubai, I am working in the hospitality industry, such as hotels, travel agency and hotel apartment.

One of the hotels I’ve worked with owns several deluxe hotel properties in Dubai and it includes the New Moscow Hotel.

The hotel is a 4-star category and it is centrally located in Al Maktoum Street Deira.

It is conveniently accessible to shopping malls and only 7 minutes away from the Dubai International Airport and World Trade Center.

I’ve only seen this property twice but this is my first time to visit it as a guest 🙂 good thing I didn’t know any of their staff aside from the Front Office Manager, I am not comfortable to check in if I know staff in different department, feel awkward that my previous colleague would treat me as guest.

My experience is fine, feel pampered as the Front Office Manager upgraded my stay to their suite room, includes a welcome fruits & cookies platter and top of it a free dinner for two 🙂

He told me that I should call him directly instead of booking it online, it’s fine I feel shy to showered of many favors.

Upon entrance to the doorway, you will feel the Russian theme of the hotel.

The friendly guest service agent will welcome you and assist you to check in.

–Guest service agent desk, you can call her extension to assist you if you have any concern or complaint–

The luminescent crystal chandelier brightens a dome shaped interior is really eye catching.

–The stairs will lead you the Mezzanine floor where the coffee shop is located–

Creativity and meticulously designed are noticeable through the hotel lobby.

Valet parking service is available as well but with minimal cost, to verify the charges it is better to coordinate with their valet desk.

–Concierge–

We reached the hotel around 4:00 pm, after my hubby’s medical check up, this is the reason why we chose to stay in this area as it is close to his hospital.

–Hallway–

Their suite room has a separate spacious living room, with sofa, dining table, dresser, and television

–Living area–

It also has a powder room in case you have a guest.

The bedroom has a king sized bed with private toilet, bath tub, and separate closed shower.

–Staycation means sleeping the whole day or watching movies–

Actually, we always prefer to have twin bed rather than a king sized but they don’t have availability.

–Complete of toiletries, shampoo, conditioner, lotion, soap, except for the toothbrush and toothpaste–

Thanks to this welcome fruits platter, it satisfied our hunger as we skipped our lunch.

Deira is an old city of Dubai before the famous Marina, Downtown, and JBR area, it shows in the building structure view from our room.
