Exclusive: Video shows moment P&O Britannia cruise ship crashes at Mallorca harbour

F ootage has captured the moment a P&O cruise ship carrying thousands of British tourists crashed into another vessel near to the shore of the Spanish island of Mallorca, leaving some onboard suffering injuries.

The video, sent to WalesOnline by passenger Ben Griffiths, shows the extremely popular MV Britannia ship slowly moving towards the smaller vessel before colliding with it. The crash is followed by a loud horn.

Multiple holidaymakers staying in Mallorca and aboard the cruise ship on Sunday have told WalesOnline how the ship had been forced into the other vessel due to a storm which swept through the island on Sunday morning. Officially the cause of the collision remains unconfirmed.

Pictures sent to WalesOnline from the ship, which you can see here, show passenger decks damaged following the collision, with tables and chairs in disarray. A separate video sent by Welsh holidaymakers also in Mallorca, which you can see here, shows the extent of the storm that hit the island on Sunday as it wrecked one Mallorca hotel, even turning sunbeds over and into the pool and sending loungers flying through the air.

Following the sounding of the horn on the Britannia on Sunday morning all passengers were told to remain inside their cabins, passengers explained, while being told, “this is not a drill”, by the captain after they heard a loud bang and saw debris floating in the water, they said.

One Welsh woman, who is on board with her partner and two children, said: “We were docked overnight in Palma and the wind was so strong our anchors broke and we blew out into another ship. We were up browsing on our phones in bed and heard the big horn after the bang. It was panic stations, I was bawling my eyes out. We went out onto our balcony and could see debris in the ocean and all the damage to the side of the boat and our lifeboat.”

The Welsh passengers said the Britannia ship was anchored less than a mile from the shore following the accident. Other passengers have since reported the ship has since docked again at Palma for the night while further checks are carried out to establish if the ship is seaworthy.

Another passenger, Mark Beckwith, told WalesOnline on Sunday evening: "The captain has and is doing an amazingly calm job with the fantastic crew. It's very calm and relaxed onboard now and we are just redocking to collect the passengers who were off the ship for the duration of the incident."

A spokesperson for P&O Cruises said: “On Sunday, August 27, P&O Cruises Britannia was involved in a weather-related incident while alongside in Palma de Mallorca. A small number of individuals sustained minor injuries and are being cared for by the onboard medical centre. To allow our technical teams to make an assessment Britannia will remain alongside in Palma de Mallorca tonight with onboard entertainment and activities scheduled.”

The Britannia set sail from Southampton on August 18 for the Mediterranean cruise including stops at Cadiz and Ibiza and had been due to leave Mallorca on Sunday afternoon. It can carry up to 3,647 passengers and is 330 metres in length. She has a crew of 1,398 and cost £473m.

Mallorca: P&O ship with thousands of Britons onboard collides with tanker

Cruise vessel’s mooring ropes snapped in high winds, which blew liner into nearby oil transport ship off coast of Palma

A P&O cruise ship carrying thousands of British holidaymakers has crashed into an oil tanker off the coast of Palma in Mallorca after it snapped its moorings.

The Britannia was blown by gales towards the other vessel on Sunday after a storm battered the island in the Balearics. P&O said a small number of people had sustained minor injuries.

It was understood that 321 guests from the ship will be flying home early as it heads back to Southampton with a reduced number of people on board, as required by maritime law.

Ricky Stubbs, a passenger, said he and his children had been about to disembark when the crash happened.

“We were at the stairwell next to the sunset bar,” he said. “A loud crash came from the bar and the door flung open with people running in. Within seconds there was more crashing followed by chaos as people were trying to escape the onslaught of wind and rain.

“People were being ushered in by other guests and staff. You could clearly see some had injuries due to either falling over or debris flying around, and people were distraught.

“A couple of minutes later the captain came over the speaker asking all guest to return to their rooms until further instructions.”

Stubbs said the passengers had been told they would be staying overnight while the boat was moored up so the damage could be assessed.

“Huge respect for the captain and all the staff as they managed to stay calm and keep everyone updated,” he said. “The captain made announcements every 10-15 minutes once we were back in our cabins and they did a great job in a stressful situation.”

View from onboard ship

The £473m ship, which entered service in 2015, is the flagship of the P&O fleet.

A P&O Cruises spokesperson said: “On Sunday 27 August, P&O Cruises Britannia was impacted by severe weather when alongside in Palma de Mallorca.

“Following inspections, our third-party surveyor has confirmed that one of Britannia’s lifeboats has sustained structural issues and cannot be repaired onboard.

“We are so sorry but these extraordinary circumstances mean that the ship is required, by maritime regulation, to return to Southampton with a reduced number of people onboard.

“A limited number of guests and crew on board have been advised that they will be leaving the ship and will be returned to Southampton (or their starting point) by flight and transfer. The guests remaining onboard will be able to enjoy the entertainment and activities scheduled for the remainder of their trip.”

Mallorca had been experiencing winds of 75mph and torrential rains, which caused sun loungers to be blown into the air. An amber weather alert was in place across the whole of the island and had been extended until midnight on Sunday.

The Tramuntana region and the north and north-east of the island were most likely to be affected, forecasters said.

P&O Cruises ship collides with oil tanker, injuries reported

p and o cruise ship collision

A P&O Cruises ship collided with an oil tanker in Spain on Sunday.

The line’s Britannia ship broke from its moorings due to strong wind in Palma de Mallorca, the Balearic Islands Port Authority said on X, formerly Twitter . The collision took place around 11 a.m. local time.

A P&O spokesperson said the vessel was involved in a “weather-related incident,” but did not confirm the collision. A “small number of individuals sustained minor injuries” and received care from the ship’s medical center, the spokesperson said in an emailed statement.

The area saw strong thunderstorms beginning in the late morning on Sunday, with reported wind gusts between 60 and 70 miles per hour, according to AccuWeather.

Britannia visited the port as part of a two-week, round-trip cruise from Southampton, England that departed Aug. 18, according to CruiseMapper . The itinerary also included stops such as Cadiz and Ibiza.

The cruise line’s third-party surveyor confirmed that one of the ship’s lifeboats “sustained structural issues” and could not be repaired onboard, a P&O spokesperson said in a subsequent statement. Maritime regulation required that the ship return to Southampton with fewer people.

“A limited number of guests and crew on board have been advised that they will be leaving the ship and will be returned to Southampton (or their starting point) by flight and transfer,” the spokesperson said. “The guests remaining on board will be able to enjoy the entertainment and activities scheduled for the remainder of their trip."

Guests who were asked to leave will get a pro-rata refund of their fare for the days they missed and a 20% cruise discount to be used in the future.

The collision left a hole in the oil tanker’s hull but did not cause any discharge into the water, the Balearic Islands Port Authority said.

The incident comes just weeks after Cunard Line’s Queen Mary 2 ship broke from its moorings in Italy due to strong winds this month. Norwegian Cruise Line’s Norwegian Prima was also blown from its mooring ropes due to unexpectedly strong side winds in Belgium earlier this summer.

Stewart Chiron, a cruise industry expert known as The Cruise Guy, told USA TODAY in July that those types of incidents are “very rare” but have occurred in extreme weather.

Weather conditions at each port are monitored for safety before arrival, he added. “The cruise lines are always assessing these matters and mitigating the risks,” Chiron said in an email at the time. “If it's (deemed) unsafe, they take appropriate action so passengers can focus on their vacations. Unfortunately, they don't control the weather.”

A small number of people are injured after a P&O cruise ship that was carrying thousands of British holidaymakers crashed into a petrol tanker.

The ship broke free of its moorings during a storm in Mallorca , Spain and collided with a freight vessel.

Port authorities in the capital Palma said the ship collided with a petrol tanker because of high winds.

One passenger Gavin McCoy told the BBC that the incident happened while “the local fire service and crew were carrying out an emergency drill”.

He added: “A sudden rain and wind storm ripped us away from our dockside moorings, breaking tethering lines, water hoses, and causing the walkway to fall into the sea.”

A cruise ship which left Southampton earlier this month has crashed after its moorings snapped in stormy weather.

A number of passengers onboard have suffered minor injuries.

The P&O Britannia cruise ship, which was carrying thousands of British passengers, crashed into another vessel on Sunday (August 27) just off the coast of Palma.

Photos and videos posted on social media from those onboard show the vessel struggling in the stormy conditions.

Sue Roberts spoke to ITV News Meridian from her cabin onboard the Britannia about the moment the cruise ship broke free from its moorings

Mallorca had been experiencing 75mph winds and torrential rain, which caused sun loungers to be blown into the air.

Passengers were told to remain inside their cabins while being told 'this is not a drill' by the captain after they heard a loud bang and saw debris floating in the water

The captain later confirmed that there was no "structural compromise" resulting from the incident.

In a statement P&O Cruises said: "We are aware of an incident involving Britannia on Sunday morning while the ship was alongside in Palma de Mallorca.

"We are working to assess the situation. The captain is keeping all guests updated. To allow our technical teams to make an assessment Britannia will remain alongside in Palma de Mallorca tonight with onboard entertainment and activities scheduled.”

P&O added that a 'small number' of people are being cared for onboard after receiving 'minor injuries'

The £473m ship, which began sailing in 2015, is the flagship of the P&O fleet based in Southampton, Hampshire.

The Britannia set sail from Southampton on August 18 for the Mediterranean cruise including stops at Cadiz and Ibiza and had been due to leave Mallorca on Sunday afternoon.

The Sinking of Andrea Doria

By: Evan Andrews

Updated: September 21, 2023 | Original: July 25, 2016

Andrea Doria in waters off Nantucket.

Though not the largest or fastest ocean liner of its era, the 697-foot Andrea Doria was widely regarded as the most beautiful. Its decks were dotted with three outdoor swimming pools, and it was dubbed a “floating art gallery” for its dazzling array of paintings, tapestries and surrealist murals. There was even a life-sized bronze statue of the ship’s namesake, a 16th-century Genoese navigator.

Equally impressive were the Doria’s safety features. It boasted two radar screens—a relatively new technology on ocean liners—and its hull was divided into 11 watertight compartments. Anxious travelers could also take solace in the presence of Captain Piero Calamai, a venerable Italian mariner and veteran of both World War I and World War II .

The Doria safely completed 100 transatlantic crossings between 1953 and 1956, and it initially seemed that its 101st would be no different. After leaving Italy on July 17, 1956, the ship stopped at three ports in the Mediterranean and then steamed into the open ocean on a nine-day voyage to New York City . Along with 572 crew members, it held 1,134 passengers ranging from Italian immigrant families to business travelers, vacationers and even a few notables such as Hollywood actress Ruth Roman.

On July 25, the Doria entered the heavily trafficked sea lanes off the Northeast coast of the United States. That same day, the 524-foot Swedish passenger liner Stockholm departed New York on a voyage to its homeport of Gothenburg. By around 10:30 p.m., the two ships were approaching one another from opposite directions off Nantucket. Neither was following the established “rules of the road” for ocean travel.

Despite sailing in heavy fog, Captain Calamai had ordered only a minor reduction in speed to stay on schedule for an early morning arrival in New York. Stockholm, meanwhile, was steaming north of the recommended eastbound route in the hope of shaving time off its journey.

Around 10:45 p.m., Calamai’s radar picked up a blip representing Stockholm. The Swedish vessel, under the watch of third officer Johan-Ernst Carstens-Johannsen, spotted the Doria on its own radar a few minutes later. It was a situation both had encountered countless times, yet on this occasion, the two ships somehow came to opposite conclusions about one another’s locations.

Carstens plotted the Doria to his left and prepared to pass port-to-port, while Calamai, fixing Stockholm’s location to his right, maneuvered for a more unconventional starboard-to-starboard passage. One of the men—it’s still not certain who—had misread his radar and inadvertently steered his ship toward the other.

The officers didn’t realize they were on a collision course until shortly before 11:10 p.m. when Calamai finally spotted Stockholm’s lights through a thick curtain of fog. “She’s coming right at us!” one Doria officer shouted. With just moments to spare, Calamai ordered a hard left turn in an attempt to outrun the other ship.

Carstens, having spotted the Doria, tried to reverse his propellers and slow down. It was too late. Stockholm’s icebreaker bow crashed into Andrea Doria’s starboard side like a battering ram, snapping bulkheads and penetrating some 30 feet into its hull. It remained lodged there for a few seconds, then broke loose, leaving a gaping hole in the side of the Doria.

Onboard Andrea Doria, passengers felt a tremendous jolt accompanied by the sound of clanging metal. Actress Ruth Roman described hearing a “big explosion like a firecracker.” In one of the lounges, the ship’s orchestra was playing the song “Arrivederci, Roma” when they were abruptly hurled from their stage by the force of the crash.

Those who only ended up with scrapes and bruises could consider themselves fortunate. The collision killed five people on Stockholm and dozens more on the Doria, which had seen a large section of its starboard side turned into twisted metal. Italian immigrant Maria Sergio and her four young children all perished on impact as they slept. In another cabin, Brooklyn resident Walter Carlin discovered that the exterior wall of his room had been completely sheared off. His wife, who had been reading in bed, had simply disappeared.

By far the most extraordinary story concerned Linda Morgan, who was sleeping in a starboard-side cabin. The crash killed her stepfather and stepsister, but Morgan was somehow lifted from her bed and thrown onto the crumpled bow of Stockholm, where she landed with only a broken arm. “I was on the Andrea Doria,” she told the astonished Stockholm sailor who found her. “Where am I now?”

Following the shock of the collision, both crews scrambled to take stock of their vessels. While Stockholm was found to be in no danger of sinking, the Doria had sustained critical damage and was listing over 20 degrees to its starboard side, allowing seawater to spill through its watertight compartments.

Calamai resigned himself to abandoning ship, but soon encountered a catastrophic problem: the list was so bad that Doria’s eight portside lifeboats could no longer be launched. The remaining starboard side craft could only carry around 1,000 of the ship’s passengers and crew. “Here danger immediate,” Andrea Doria radioed. “Need lifeboats—as many as possible—can’t use our lifeboats.”

Luckily for Calamai, his ship was floating in a heavily traveled strip of the Atlantic. While the mangled Stockholm began rescuing passengers from the Doria, several other vessels answered its distress calls and raced to the scene. The first, a small freighter called the Cape Ann, arrived around 12:30 a.m. Two American Navy ships followed shortly thereafter, but lifeboats remained scarce. Finally, around 2 a.m., a massive French ocean liner called the Ile de France maneuvered alongside the Doria, lit up the darkness with its floodlights and began making rescues with its lifeboats.

Though help had arrived, the situation aboard the Doria remained perilous. Debris from the collision had trapped some of the passengers in their cabins, and many on the lower levels had to brave smoke-filled hallways and knee-deep water on their way to the main deck. Those who gathered by the useless portside lifeboats faced their own set of problems.

With the Doria listing to its right, its main deck had turned into a steep, slippery slope. To reach the starboard side lifeboats, many had to lie on their backs and slide down the deck, making sure to stop before they careened off the edge and into the water. All the while, the ship continued to roll, threatening to capsize at any moment.

The rescue—one of the largest in maritime history—lasted several hours, but by 5:30 a.m., nearly all the Doria’s survivors had been evacuated. 753 people were placed aboard the Ile de France, with the rest scattered aboard Stockholm and four other vessels. Captain Calamai seemed ready to go down with his ship but reluctantly boarded the last lifeboat after his crew refused to leave him behind. A few hours later, as the rescue fleet steamed toward New York harbor, Andrea Doria finally capsized and flooded. At 10:09 a.m., it disappeared beneath the Atlantic.

All told, 51 people had died as a result of the collision—five on Stockholm and 46 on the Doria. The ships’ owners both blamed the other for the tragedy, but following an out-of-court settlement, a trial was averted and neither was officially held responsible. In the years since investigators have used crew depositions and computer simulations to try and recreate the night of the disaster.

While there were obvious mistakes from both ships, many researchers now believe that Carstens made the crucial error by misreading his radar and concluding that the Doria was several miles farther away than it actually was. Nevertheless, the debate over the cause of the wreck continues even today.

Stockholm was eventually repaired. Andrea Doria, meanwhile, rests in some 240 feet of water in the North Atlantic. It has become a hallowed site among scuba divers, who call it the “Mt. Everest” of diving, but poor visibility and unpredictable currents have ensured that the 60-year-old wreck is still claiming lives. Since 1956, over a dozen people have perished while trying to explore its watery grave.

Guide to Cruise Ship Accident Lawsuits

Cruise ship accidents

All aboard! But read the fine print first.

More than 14 million Americans went on a cruise in 2019. That number was just above two million in 2021, likely lower because of health concerns and economic fallout from the COVID-19 pandemic. Worldwide, the cruise industry accounts for about 30 million passengers a year.

Two million travelers is no small number, and it’s likely to rebound to previous levels as the pandemic falls to the rearview mirror and people resume vacations and activities they used to enjoy.

There are lots of reasons why cruising is appealing to so many people—whether you look for a Disney-style cruise where there are plenty of activities for your kids (so you can get some much-needed relaxation for yourself while they’re occupied!) or you’re an older adult who wants to see the world without the hassle of navigating your own travel.

Cruising is overwhelmingly safe. The U.S. Department of Transportation reported 81 “serious” injuries aboard cruise ships in 2019. This includes fatalities, injuries that required more than basic first aid, or manage damage to the ship. These injuries only include those reported to the U.S. Coast Guard, though there were other injuries that happened that were not reported.

The majority of injuries that happen aboard or related to cruise ships are slip-and-fall injuries on wet decks or stairs, food poisoning, recreational accidents, and similar.

Most common cruise ship injuries

You can be injured on a cruise ship in many of the same ways you could be injured if you’re staying in a vacation resort or participating in any type of recreation.

Here’s a look at some typical injuries that cruise ship guests can suffer while traveling:

Slip and fall accidents

A slip and fall accident could happen anywhere. On a cruise ship, there are certain hazards that are specific to that type of environment. For instance, there could be luggage in hallways that cause a tripping hazard, or there could be wet or slippery floors.

Food poisoning

Food needs to be transported on the ship and should be handled and stored properly and in the correct temperature. But there have been instances of mishandled, poorly prepared or incorrectly stored food that have made people sick onboard.

Legionnaire’s Disease

Legionella organisms live within aerosolized water. Cruise ship travelers rely on potable water, and it could become contaminated with this dangerous bacteria. Inhaling or aspirating contaminated water could cause some to become ill with a pneumonia-like disease. If the water on the ship becomes contaminated with Legionella, it can spread from pools, hot tubs and showers.

Drowning can be an issue near any body of water—surely, accidents happen in pools on cruise ships—but if a passenger falls overboard, it’s a much higher risk.

Cruise ships are isolated from the rest of the world, but with ships that can carry up to 4,000 passengers, they operate like a small town.

With that many people in close quarters, sometimes intentional torts take place. Passengers have reported injuries from assaults, either by crew members or other passengers. These types of incidents can result in both physical injury and emotional trauma .

Recreational activities

Cruise ships typically offer activities like rock climbing, rappelling, water sports, and even sky rides. Any of these can be inherently dangerous and passengers occasionally become injured.

Passenger “disappearance”

There are some well-known cases of passengers who seemingly vanished from a cruise ship.

While these frightening stories aren’t common, they do happen and questions arise about who is liable for these individuals’ deaths .

Can you file a lawsuit for a cruise ship injury?

Yes, but it might not be as straightforward as a typical personal injury lawsuit .

When you purchased your cruise tickets, there was likely a forum selection clause buried in the fine print. There could be language that limits where you can file a legal claim.

Cruise lines can include a “choice of law clause.” That means the cruise line could specify in what country a lawsuit must be filed... and if you’re a resident of the U.S. but the cruise line wants to apply Italian law, you could be out of luck. Italian law, for instance, caps the liability of cruise lines at $568,000.

Paul Turner v. Costa Crociere S.P.A. (U.S. Court of Appeals for the 11th Circuit)

A decision issued in 2021 settled the question of forum selection clauses in cruise ship contracts. Plaintiff Paul Turner filed a class action lawsuit in Florida claiming that the cruise line’s negligence contributed to an outbreak of COVID-19 during a trip that began on March , 2020.

However, the case was dismissed based on the forum selection clause, not on the merits of the claim.

The relevant locations are:

  • The cruise line’s parent company headquarters was in Italy
  • The operating subsidiary was headquartered in Florida
  • The cruise departed from Fort Lauderdale, Florida
  • The cruise concluded in the Canary Islands (part of Spain)

There was a clause in the purchased ticket specifying that any dispute would be resolved by the court in Genoa, Italy and a choice-of-law provision that selected Italian law.

The Eleventh Circuit dismissed Turner’s case, siding with the cruise line. The court held that the Italian forum selection clause was valid.

Was the cruise line negligent?

Things happen, and sometimes it’s not anyone’s fault—it could be a pure accident.

For instance, in a news story published on April 4, 2023, a passenger on a Virgin Voyages cruise ship fell over their balcony shortly after their departure. The ship had recently left Miami en route to Honduras. The passenger died after falling from the balcony to the lower deck.

The cruise line did not immediately release details out of respect for privacy, but the spokesperson said that it’s possible that a medical emergency caused the person to fall. People can get sick and have medical emergencies on cruise ships just as they would on land, and sometimes things happen that cannot be prevented.

However, a passenger has an expectation of reasonable safety measures that should be taken by the cruise line. These include:

  • Access to reasonable emergency medical services
  • On-site medical facility with intensive care unit (ICU)
  • At least one doctor and nurse on board
  • Access to bandages, medicine, etc.
  • Cardiac defibrillators

In addition to ensuring access to treatment in the event of an emergency, a cruise line is also responsible for maintaining safe and hazard-free premises for passengers and crew.

Premises liability claims for cruise ship injuries

Premises liability is the area of law that covers injuries resulting from a property hazard. Slip-and-fall accidents would likely be in this category, along with swimming pool accidents, injuries from falling objects, and so on.

The property owner (in this instance, the cruise line) is responsible for ensuring that guests on the property are safe from harm. If there is a hazardous condition, such as a known wet, slippery floor, then the cruise line has a responsibility to notify passengers and crew by posting signs or through other means.

What to do after a cruise ship accident

The first priority after any accident or injury is to seek medical treatment. Any crew member on the ship should be able to direct you to the appropriate place or person who can provide care.

You should also report the accident immediately. By alerting the cruise ship operator, it requires the company to conduct an internal investigation. If there’s any criminal activity, a cruise line with ports in the U.S. must report it to the FBI.

If you can collect some evidence, including photos of the scene of the accident, this could be important if you file a claim. You also want to take names and contact information of anyone who witnessed the accident. You should also make sure to maintain copies of any medical records created on the ship or at a port related to the accident.

When you return from your trip, seek the guidance of a personal injury lawyer . Your lawyer will assist with jurisdictional issues related to your claim and help you to recover compensation for your injuries.
