The best things to do in Santa Monica

Palisades Park

1.  Palisades Park

  • Things to do
  • Santa Monica

For stunning views of the ocean and Santa Monica Mountains, this bluff-top park along Santa Monica’s northern coast is the spot. It’s the classic image of L.A.’s coastline that lives in most people’s heads. You’ll find thicker crowds of tourists in the section by the Santa Monica Pier, so instead keep toward the northern Pacific Palisades-adjacent end, past the stately concrete sculpture at Wilshire and the colorful totem pole at San Vicente.

Go on a Santa Monica and Venice Beach bicycle ride.

Santa Monica Farmers’ Market

2.  Santa Monica Farmers’ Market

  • Markets and fairs

When you’re next sat in a local restaurant and feel tempted to ask the server where the incredibly fresh vegetables on your plate came from, don’t bother. We can save you the trouble and answer that for you: the Santa Monica’s Farmers’ Market, of course. The market takes place on Saturdays and Sundays in other parts of Santa Monica, but the best day to pay a visit is Wednesday (8am–1pm) when it fills Arizona Avenue. Find the rest of L.A.’s best farmers’ markets .

Santa Monica State Beach

3.  Santa Monica State Beach

  • Downtown Santa Monica

Running the length of Santa Monica itself, this huge beach is usually packed with people, but has a festive, summer-holiday feel to it. The main attraction is the world-famous Pier, and the biggest crowds can be found clustered around it. If you’re looking for a more relaxed vibe, stray as far from the pier as you can in either direction and you can find some quieter patches. There are bathrooms, bike paths and paid parking positioned along almost the entire stretch of sand. Looking for more of L.A.’s best beaches ?

Rent a bike and cruise Santa Monica.

Santa Monica Pier

4.  Santa Monica Pier

  • Historic buildings and sites

The center and focal point of Santa Monica Beach, Santa Monica Pier is home to a whole host of different attractions. Pacific Park is a traditional fair with a roller coaster and Ferris wheel, plus plenty of fairground games, an aquarium and a classic carousel housed in the historic Looff Hippodrome. There are also regular outdoor music and film events hosted at the Pier, bringing a different, hipper crowd to the boardwalk.

See the Santa Monica Pier on a guided bike tour.

Aero Theatre

5.  Aero Theatre

  • Movie theaters
  • Independent

The Aero Theatre has been in operation since the 1940, a history and legacy it flaunts with screenings of classic films and contemporary independent cinema. This Art Deco landmark also hosts special feature programs plus director lectures and appearances. The Aero is operated by American Cinematheque, who also programs the Los Feliz Theatre and the famous  Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood —another venue film buffs should take the time to visit (once it wraps up its renovation).

Catch a film at some of our other favorite movie theaters .

The Original Muscle Beach

6.  The Original Muscle Beach

Not to be confused with its showier Venice sibling , this workout playground for grown-ups has given Santa Monica’s biggest and burliest somewhere to sweat and strut their stuff for a century. On weekends, you’ll see some amazing gymnasts tackle the parallel bars, uneven bars and rings swings. Even with all that machismo, the vibe here stays friendly and no one will mind if you choose to get involved, or just sit and take it all in.

Stop by Muscle Beach on a bike tour.

McCabe’s

7.  McCabe’s

  • Music venues
  • price 2 of 4

A revered guitar shop by day, stocked to the ceilings with rare and obscure guitars and other instruments, McCabe’s also has a cozy back room where performances are held in an intimate environment. Gigs are usually held on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays but it’s a worth a visit just to gawp at the dozens of beautiful guitars hanging from the walls.

Santa Monica Stairs

8.  Santa Monica Stairs

Does your idea of a good time involve some serious aerobics and muscle burn? Well, get yourself over to these twin Santa Monica stairs that are a mecca for hard bodies and weekend fitness warriors. You can choose to ascend via either 199 concrete steps or 170 (wider) wooden steps. If it’s all a bit too corwded, jog over to Mesa Road and less well known La Mesa stairs. Blink and you’ll miss the narrow entryway wedged between 404 and 410.

Feel the burn at these other free L.A. workouts .

Third Street Promenade

9.  Third Street Promenade

  • Shopping centers

A four-block pedestrianized stretch that runs down Third Street from Wilshire Boulevard to Colorado Avenue, Third Street Promenade is a pleasant but commonplace parade of mostly familiar names. Though the open-air plaza isn’t quite as buzzing as it once was, there are still some out-of-the-ordinary stops here: The excellent Wednesday morning farmers’ market  is worth a trip, as is an outpost of Silverlake Ramen . Consider grabbing a happy hour drink just around the corner at the Misfit .

Book L.A. tours and attractions.

Tongva Park

10.  Tongva Park

What was once just another concrete parking lot has been transformed into a oceanside oasis of green space at Santa Monica’s Tongva Park. This idyllic and well-designed verdant space includes a playground, waterfalls, walking paths, meadows and a conch-like, wireframe lookout to the Pacific. Sneak over to Chez Jay at the corner of the park for a drink.

Relax in more of the best parks in L.A.

Bergamot Station

11.  Bergamot Station

Home to a slew of different contemporary and fine art galleries, this artsy enclave is the perfect destination for cheap dates and lazy days. If the art doesn’t do anything for you, the edgy architecture, stylish café (housed in an old heater factory that serves meatloaf and mint lemonade), and fragrant stands of wild bergamot scattered about should amp up the atmosphere. And though a number of the galleries have shuttered in recent years, you’ll find fresh activity thanks to standout restaurant Birdie G’s .

Santa Monica Place

12.  Santa Monica Place

  • price 3 of 4

Located at the southern end of the Third Street Promenade, this revamped shopping center is packed with upscale department stores and designer boutiques from brands like Coach and Louis Vuitton. There’s nothing particularly notable about Santa Monica Place (though it is getting a Din Tai Fung ), but it’s a pleasant destination for some retail to-dos thanks to three floors of sophisticated shopping set around an open-air courtyard.

Annenberg Community Beach House

13.  Annenberg Community Beach House

Pool closed Oct–May, grounds open daily.

This modern community beach club was originally built by William Randolph Hearst in the 1920s as an opulent beachfront estate for Hollywood star Marion Davies. These days, it’s very much open to the public. The five-acre beach house includes a recreation room for games as well as a swimming pool, sports facilities, a cafe and paddle board rentals. You can also take a sunset swim on select evenings during the summer.

Splash around in some other public pools throughout L.A.

California Heritage Museum

14.  California Heritage Museum

  • price 1 of 4

Step out of the sun and take in a bit of California history in a restored 1894 house. Though the house itself—devoted to the Victorian period—is worth a look, rotating exhibitions on topics related to the region are the real draw. The museum is at its busiest on Sundays, though only outside: It hosts the Santa Monica farmers’ market every Sunday morning.

Santa Monica Airport

15.  Santa Monica Airport

It’s the oldest operating airfield in L.A. County (though slated to be closed and turned into a park by the end of the decade) and the birthplace of the Douglas DC-3. Originally called Clover Field, the Santa Monica Airport has developed over time into an arts incubator and is home to a number of creative venues housed in converted airplane hangars like the Ruskin Group Theatre Co. and events space the Barker Hangar.

Have an hour to kill near the 10 or the 405? Watch planes land up-close at Santa Monica Airport.

Museum of Flying

16.  Museum of Flying

This small museum dedicated to the history of aviation moved into new premises at the Santa Monica Airport in February 2012. Inside you can learn all about the history of Southern Californian aviation companies including, Boeing, Lockheed, North American and Northrop with numerous exhibits and displays bringing the planes and their stories to life. Flight fans will love the carefully preserved static and flyable aircraft that call this place home.

Santa Monica Camera Obscura

17.  Santa Monica Camera Obscura

Temporarily closed.

This curious old optical contraption is a historical and offbeat place to catch your breath, whether you’re waiting for late stragglers to your dinner reservations or trying to find a quiet escape from the pier. Though the technology behind this rudimentary camera-like room is thousands of years old, it still feels like magic. Have an hour to kill along Ocean Avenue? Take a step inside the Camera Obscura.

best things to do in Santa Monica

Santa Monica is famous for its beaches, dining, bars, and sunny tourist attractions.

If you love the sun and the liveliness of the small but loud town, then there are countless options for where to go, what to see, and what to do.

Not sure where you should head to first? No sweat!

Here are our picks for the best places to visit and fun things to do in Santa Monica, California.

Table of Contents

1. Santa Monica Pier

Santa Monica Pier

The Santa Monica Pier is probably one of the most iconic locations in California.

Located along the seaside stop of Route 66, it’s fun for the whole family (pets included) and packed with multiple options for what to do.

Activities at the pier include Pacific Park, which has a roller coaster and, of course, the beautiful Ferris wheel that lights up gorgeously at night.

There’s the Playland Arcade for some exciting games, a carousel with endless history to its name, and the whimsical and enticing Santa Monica Pier Aquarium to explore.

You can also opt to rent a bike, head to a souvenir or beach shop, or just stroll through the pier and watch the world go by.

Musicians line up to play all throughout the boardwalk and, as one of the most famous Santa Monica attractions, it’s always busy enough to people-watch.

2. Santa Monica State Beach

Santa Monica State Beach

The Santa Monica State Beach measures 3.5 miles along the California coast, dividing the shore from the bigger town at large.

It’s packed with activities and a trip here is easily among the top 10 free things to do in the town.

At this amazing state beach, you can rent bikes, go to a picnic area, swim under lifeguard surveillance, take your kids to the playground, or book some items for water sports.

There are also lots of pathways that allow you to walk easily through the lovely sand, with spots peppered with chess tables, volleyball courts, and small scenic locations throughout.

Naturally, this beach is known for just being an iconic place to do standard beach things – like building sandcastles, lounging on the sand by the ocean, going for a quick swim, or working on a tan.

It offers nothing short of the quintessential beach experience, and that’s why it’s a good choice to head to this weekend to unwind.

Address: Ocean Ave at Colorado Ave, Santa Monica, CA 90401, United States

3. Annenberg Community Beach House

Annenberg Community Beach House

Annenberg Community Beach House

The Annenberg Community Beach House is a huge facility open to the public located just north of the Santa Monica Pier.

It was built in the 1920s, during the Gold Coast era of California, and began as a privately owned mansion by the beach, belonging to none other than Marion Davies.

The Annenberg Community Beach House is now state-owned – and it’s among the best things to do in Santa Monica.

It’s essentially turned into the equivalent of a cultural center by the ocean and is an amazing location for anyone who seeks a getaway this weekend.

At this beach house, you’ll find playgrounds, beach cords, a swimming pool, and a splash pad, all bathed in the luxurious and fun beach town glory reminiscent of the roaring 20s.

Just like how it was considered the place to be when Marion Davies owned it, it still very much holds up a reputation for being the center of the beach community.

There are even rotating art exhibits and free tours!

4. Looff Hippodrome

Looff Hippodrome

The Looff Hippodrome is named after its creator, one very famous German man named Charles Looff.

Looff was based in Brooklyn in the late 1800s but was known across the country for creating some of the nation’s most beautiful and exquisite carousel rides.

After the East Coast had been filled with Looff works, he moved over to Long Beach in California, where the Santa Monica Pier was slowly growing in popularity.

The town of Santa Monica was, at the time, investing a lot in the betterment of that pier and commissioned Looff to work his magic.

They gave him a whole pier to work with, and he and his sons began work on what he called Pleasure Pier.

The plan Looff had involved building a hippodrome amusement park.

A hippodrome is, essentially, a kind of open-air stadium of Greek history.

Traditionally, hippodromes were used for chariot races, but Looff planned to fill the “stadium” with circle swings, a masterful carousel, a roller coaster, a restaurant, a dance hall, and a Wurlitzer.

Visitors loved the fun and exciting entertainment site and it was the highlight of the pier.

The Looff Hippodrome was successful for years before Looff died in the middle of new construction for additions to his masterpiece.

All new renovations were stopped, but the current rides were maintained and stayed popular.

When the town started to consider removing the pier in favor of putting up a resort, a set of powerful storms nearly took out the two-story oval structure first.

The Pier Restoration and Development Task Force, formed in 1983, eventually managed to get the Looff Hippodrome the status of a historical landmark.

It was then restored to its former glory, though it sadly lacks the essential Looff carousel, replaced instead by one made in 1922.

Though it has changed from years of events, the Looff Hippodrome is still one of the main places to visit in the town.

5. Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area

Pedestrians love this haven and it’s a great place to head to for some urban sightseeing.

Packed with shops, stores, eateries, and more, Third Street Promenade is full of things to see and is basically an outdoor shopping mall.

Its building is called the Roy Jones House and it welcomes visitors to Santa Monica with all sorts of information about the wonderful and diverse state, making it one of the best places to go on vacation to glean this sort of education from.

The heritage museum covers a laundry list of topics.

Think about it: California’s a complex place!

It has deserts, mountains, coast, and forests.

It’s packed with influences from multiple different cultures.

Celebrities call it their home, rural areas have modern amenities, and renewable energy is farmed in expanses of dry sand.

It’s quite impressive!

This museum takes a look at all these different factors that go into making the state what it is.

Whether you’re looking to learn about the Pacific Ocean’s ecology, the state’s cultural history, the Golden Age of cinema, the architecture of the Roy Jones home, or even the origin of skateboarding, this place has it all!

The permanent exhibit here highlights the Jones’ family history and the legacy of its house.

9. Route 66 End of the Trail Sign

Route 66 End of the Trail Sign

rawf8 / Shutterstock

Santa Monica, California is famous for many things, but one of those things is a simple road: Route 66.

It’s the country’s most famous road, arguably, and once upon a time, it was just one stop along the way of the East-to-West migration path.

When the Interstate Highway System was created, the rambling, winding road became less popular, but 85% of it remains in use to this day.

Few realize that Route 66 ends somewhere specific, and that place happens to be in Santa Monica, where the Route 66 End of the Trail Sign is erected.

Highway 66 was decommissioned officially in the year 1985, and there have been many rumors about the location of the original sign, with some believing this to be but a movie prop.

The Route 66 End of the Trail Sign isn’t an official highway sign, but it’s still one of Santa Monica’s points of interest.

Plus, it’s fun to speculate about its many rumors, and visiting it is one of the town’s free things to do.

The route will take you through old-fashioned diners with their neon glows, and it’s really nostalgic to drive down and appreciate the world left behind with the road’s end.

With all that in mind, this is a great place to head to for something a little unique in the town.

Address: 330 Santa Monica Pier, Santa Monica, CA 90401, United States

10. Palisades Park

Palisades Park

If you’re looking for one of the best places to visit in California , Palisades Park is definitely on the list!

Located by the ocean between Ocean Avenue and the beautiful beach, it is a bluff-top park that gives you the most stunning panoramas of the coastline.

Spanning 26 acres, this park is a favorite of locals and visitors alike.

All around, you’ll see rose bushes, palm trees, ocean views, and seating areas that come together to make this one of the best town spaces in town.

Palisades Park is also joined with a number of other attractions and is home to some of its own, such as installations of art, courts for playing pétanque, and connections to the beach.

Don’t forget to walk to Inspiration Point on the northern side to get the most gorgeous views!

Address: Ocean Ave, Santa Monica, CA 90401, United States

11. Bergamot Station Arts Center

Bergamot Station Arts Center

Bergamot Station Arts Center

Bergamot Station Arts Center isn’t just famous in California, but across the world for being a creative space full of art and beauty.

Between the years 1875 and 1953, this location was the site of a railroad station, after which it was used for different warehouse purposes in the manufacturing and packaging industries.

Eventually, the abandoned lot was purchased by the town of Santa Monica, and in 1994, its five acres were opened anew as the Bergamot Station Arts Center we know today.

It’s full of rotating exhibits that showcase a mix of classical and contemporary works from artists that hail from many corners of the planet.

Parking and admission are free, which is why it’s famous as one of the fun, exciting options for what to do in Santa Monica.

The architecture of the building itself is pretty impressive and worth exploring.

As you finish up your tour, you’ll come across a cafe that sells hot drinks and sweet treats – a worthy finishing flourish after taking in all that art!

Several different kinds of aircraft are displayed at this museum.

You’ll view jet age crafts, a replica Wright flyer, and the nosepiece of a Boeing 727.

Crafts include those from many of South California’s aviation companies, like Hughes Aircraft, Northrop, Boeing, North American, and Lockheed.

Other great activities here are the children’s area with hands-on exhibits, the theater with documentaries and films, an aircraft display plaza outside, guided tours, and even an interactive flight simulator!

14. Santa Monica Camera Obscura

Santa Monica Camera Obscura

Santa Monica Camera Obscura is located in the aforementioned Palisades Park, right in the middle of the town.

It is contained within a very small room, the door to which may be locked.

Simply knock on the door next to it and you’ll be able to receive a key – in exchange for temporarily leaving the front desk your driver’s license – to enter.

The unassuming room holds a large white disk with a wheel.

Operating it lets you shift a mirror and lens from a turret in order to project an image onto the disk.

The image simply takes the form of whatever is passing through the outside at the moment.

This is the Camera Obscura.

The Camera Obscura is thought to be one of the world’s first optical inventions, and it might date back to the era of ancient Greece.

Some experts think it and other devices like it would have been used by Renaissance-era painters to project images to paint onto their canvases.

In the Victoria and Edwardian eras, such cameras became common attractions along the sea for tourists and visitors, both in America and in Europe.

This particular camera was built in 1898 by Robert F. Jones, then gifted to this California town in 1907.

After 50 years spent documenting the world on the beach and pier, it was set up in the Adult Recreation Center.

Today, the center, still in its mid-century building, is a place for art and cultural community, often holding events and classes.

The Camera Obscura is its centerpiece.

Only very few of this type of camera remain in operation in the country.

To think that this hidden gem is so near to a bustling, fun tourist hub!

As such, this is one of the places to visit you should head to, especially if you have an interest in photography.

Address: 1450 Ocean Ave, Santa Monica, CA 90401, United States

15. Santa Monica Stairs

Santa Monica Stairs

Santa Monica Stairs

Santa Monica Stairs were never meant to be one of California’s tourist attractions, but the hidden gem tucked neatly into an unassuming residential area has gained popularity as of late, especially among the fitness-oriented crowd.

The public walkway has over 300 steps made of a mix of concrete and wood and anyone climbing up or down is sure to feel the burn in their legs.

199 steps of concrete and 170 steps of wood across two sets of stairs are the exact details of this unique and unusual spot.

The wooden stairs are wider but the concrete ones have a banister for stability, so it’s really up to you which one works best.

If you’re lucky, there might be some grab-and-pay water bottles, sold for $1 based on an unsupervised honor system, to fuel you at the top of the stairs.

It’s pretty common for the stairs to be busy with people exercising, and that might be one of the unintentionally cool activities for tourists to do at least once while here.

You’ll see some seasoned experts performing sit-ups, pull-ups, push-ups, or jumping rope between their laps of the stairs.

Do keep in mind that there aren’t any facilities here, as it’s a residential area’s staircase, so you’ll have to run over to the nearest restroom on Ocean Avenue if you need to go.

Address: 699 Adelaide Dr, Santa Monica, CA 90402, United States

16. Tongva Park

Tongva Park

Looking for fun things to do in California ?

Located just off Ocean Avenue, Tongva Park covers six acres in the southern area beneath Santa Monica Pier.

This urban park is everything you need for a fun and relaxing evening, with enough activities and things to see to keep you occupied without being overwhelming.

The space used to be a parking lot, but Los Angeles turned it into a green area!

Sculptures, gardens, playgrounds, a fountain, and picnic locations make for great walks through the space, and the accompanying ocean breeze of the California coastline is always a welcome addition.

It’s tranquil and minimal, but it certainly does the trick as an idyllic and beautifully designed spot for resting your feet and mind.

Address: 1615 Ocean Ave, Santa Monica, CA 90401, United States

17. Sweet Rose Creamery

Sweet Rose Creamery

Sweet Rose Creamery

The humble and quaint Sweet Rose Creamery serves some of the best ice creams in California.

It was first opened in 2010 by Shiho Yoshikawa, an executive chef, with his business partners Josh Loeb and Zoe Nathan in Brentwood Park.

Now, it’s expanded to five different neighborhood branches, each one using organic, locally sourced ingredients to create high-quality treats.

Lots of different flavors are available at Sweet Rose Creamery.

There are classics, like chocolate and mint chip, and also more unorthodox options like cherimoya coconut and sweet potato swirl.

There are also sorbets made dairy-free with cool options like kiwi and horchata coconut to choose from.

If you’re craving some ice cream, Sweet Rose Creamery is one of the most recommended places to go!

It has a mix of familiar names and lesser-known brands and eateries.

Most interestingly, the shops you may recognize, like Bloomingdales and Nordstrom, actually have local twists.

For example, both stock accessories and fashion trends are made by designers from the town, and there are more than a hundred original art pieces showcased at Bloomingdales.

For a fun meal, head up to the rooftop to enjoy a lovely dining experience.

There are so many different cuisine types to choose from, so you’re sure to find one that you like!

The Broad Stage

Broad Stage is located in the Santa Monica Performing Arts Center and has been open since 2008.

It seats 500 people and is this California town’s most modern and technologically advanced space for the performing arts.

It’s also the biggest, and its repertoire of performances means it’s the best place for stage shows in town!

Musicals, theater shows, symphonies, dance shows, and orchestral performances dot the Broad Stage’s calendar.

It’s a great fun place to go for a great show, whether at night or during the day.

Need something a little more intimidating?

jAdis

If you’re looking for cool things to do in Santa Monica, California, jAdis should be on your list of places to visit.

It’s a one-of-a-kind location that’s chock-full of science fiction memorabilia and paraphernalia, antique instruments of science, and a collection that grows and grows.

jAdis was founded by Parke Meek, an antique collector and well-known designer for furniture.

Three decades ago, he and his partner Susan Leiberman opened jAdis together.

Functioning as part science “museum”, it mainly focused on Meek’s fascinating private collection of all sorts of curiosities of science until it grew to include a prop rental service.

Meek’s items have appeared in countless different shows and movies, including X-Files, Batman and Robin, and Waterworld.

jAdis also boasts cool replicas, like the town of Lost children’s headpiece and a robot from Metropolis.

For a long time, jAdis was closed to the public, open only to private collectors and movie studios, but it was opened for a few hours weekly with a $1 entry fee a while later.

In 2010, Meek passed away.

jAdis continues its tradition of opening to the public for a low fee.

It is now run by Leiberman, who also has a shop next door, and Mel Bloch, a lifelong friend of Meek.

Block loves talking about Meek’s life and is happy to show visitors in.

A mix of memorabilia and items designed by Meek’s own genius is visible throughout the store.

Van de Graaf generators, celestial spheres, Tesla coils, antique orreries, switchboards, and more can be seen all throughout this incredibly unique store!

Whether looking for the best waves, the most solitude, or any number of beach volleyball courts, The Strand connects them all.

And even with limited parking, it's not uncommon to see crowds of people exercising on the stairs.

It's no secret that the 300-plus steps of this public walkway leave visitors with a distinct thigh-burning sensation.

Montana Avenue is a popular thoroughfare for dining and shopping extending into the city's northside. Over 150 restaurants and storefronts line the sidewalks of this inland street, providing an abundance of daytime window shopping and outdoor cafés for a casual lunch.

Many of the boutique storefronts and fashionable retail shops on Montana Avenue are found nowhere else in California. And at the heart of Montana Avenue, the Aero Theatre is a renovated 1930s movie house now featuring independent and classic Hollywood films.

Platform signs for Bergamot Station

In north Santa Monica away from the ocean, this world-renowned creative space was once a railroad station between 1875 and 1953. The Getty Villa is near the oceanfront in the Pacific Palisades neighborhood of Los Angeles, north along the coast from Santa Monica. It's one of two sites operated by the Getty, a philanthropic foundation dedicated to preserving the world's artistic legacy.

The Getty Villa is a reconstruction of an ancient Roman country home, complete with intricate gardens and a peristyle. Simply admiring the luxurious grounds and architecture of the villa is an experience alone, and it's a popular spot to photograph.

Perhaps more incredibly, ancient artworks occupy nearly the entire villa. On display are several marble statues, Roman coins, and ancient mummies. And the second floor of the villa is home to a rotating exhibition space, where premier collections from across the world are regularly displayed.

Point Mugu State Park

The Santa Monica Mountains extend north nearly to Oxnard. The Pacific Coast Highway narrows throughout this rugged section of coastal mountains as it passes through other iconic destinations, including Malibu .

And, some of California's best state parks are within the Santa Monica Mountains, including Leo Carrillo and Malibu Creek State Parks, as well as Point Mugu State Park , with stunning ridge lines and great views of the ocean.

Malibu Creek State Park

The mountains are easily accessible from downtown L.A., and Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area is an easy contender for a top day trip from Los Angeles .

The 2018 Woolsey Fire severely affected the landscape of the Santa Monica Mountains. Much of the 500-mile network of trails re-opened in 2019, as well as the many campgrounds throughout, and visitors are asked to respect any current closures.

A multi-ethnic family on a picnic at the beach in the winter in Santa Monica, CA, US

Here are the best things to do in Santa Monica © Tod Seelie / Getty Images

With its three miles of sandy beach, dotted with palm trees on one side and lush mountains on another, the tiny city of Santa Monica – only 16 miles sq – is a quaint and chic beach town. The instantly recognizable pier marks the end of Route 66 , and the spill-over from edgy Venice Beach to the south makes for a heady concoction of tourists, beach bums, and exhibitionists.

On any given day you could see tattooed scalps, monstrous muscles and retirees working on their career tans, amongst the omnipresent smell of weed. But despite pockets of eccentricity, Santa Monica is a smart and chic Los Angeles-adjacent beach town. It's here you'll find plenty of things to do, with trendy cafes for people watching, upscale boutiques for designer shopping, and some of the most expensive real estate in Los Angeles County. These are the top experiences in Santa Monica.

Head to McCabe's Guitar Shop for a night of live music

Hidden in the back of a musical instrument shop, this live venue rose to fame in the 1960s during the folk and blues revival. By day, McCabe’s sells obscure instruments. By night, it turns into a intimate booze-free venue for 150 music aficionados. Legendary artists, from Joni Mitchell and John Lee Hooker to PJ Harvey, the Pixies, Tom Petty, and Elvis Costello, to name but a few, have performed unplugged sets here and modern greats continue to stop by.

A woman stands on the pier in Santa Monica near a large sign marking the end of Route 66

Learn to trapeze on Santa Monica Pier

The historic pier is to Santa Monica what the Eiffel Tower is to Paris – overrun with tourists but no visit is complete without experiencing it. Built in 1909, the pier marks the last stop on Route 66. Incredibly, the 130ft high Pacific Wheel is the only one of its kind on a California pier. It's also the only solar-powered Ferris wheel in the world – take a spin for panoramic views of the city. Then, ride a rollercoaster, play carnival games, and get launched into the sky by an aerialist at an aerial workshop with the resident trapeze school TSNY .

Descend the steep Santa Monica Stairs

This not-so-secret pathway, in between multi-million-dollar houses on Adelaide Drive, plummets through the trees and lush mountains of Santa Monica Canyon via 170 steel and wooden stairs. Originally built in the 1920s, so local kids had a quicker route to school, the steps now attract fitness junkies, who come here to experience the sharp 110ft elevation change and climb the calf-pounding stairway to heart-rate heaven. Much to the dismay of the wealthy local residents, it has become a wildly popular challenge – around 1500 people workout on the narrow steel and wooden stairs every weekend.

Watch a cult movie at a vintage theater

The Aero has been showing movies since the 1940s on its single screen. Originally built by the Douglas Aircraft Company, the name being a nod to the aerospace industry, it still has many original art deco features – including the striking neon sign and single seat ticket office in the entrance hall. The movie house has featured in many films itself, including Donnie Darko (2001), Sleepwalkers  (1992), and Get Shorty  (1995). One of its biggest nights of the year is the annual Dusk-to-Dawn Horrorthon, which takes place around Halloween and screens back-to-back scary movies on 35mm film.

Man swings on suspended rings at an outside gym near Santa Monica beach

Stop for a work-out show on the real muscle beach

Although the one in Venice gets more attention, the original "muscle beach" – an outdoor gym with ropes, rings, and bars – actually opened in Santa Monica in 1934. Venice's version was named the "Weight Pen" before it adopted its "Muscle Beach Venice" moniker. Due to the busy public setting on Santa Monica Beach , with pier and ocean in the background, it's become more of a theater than a gym, with thousands of spectators stopping by each day to take pictures, as obliging resident beefcakes and gymnasts pose in between workouts.

Take a dip at the Annenberg Community Beach House

Originally a grandiose 1920s five-acre beach house built for legendary silent-era film actress Marion Davies, the Annenberg Community Beach House is now a pool and recreation center with beach views and all kinds of classes the public can sign up for. Beach volleyball, soccer and tennis, in addition, to stand-up paddle boarding and surf lessons, are all available. And, of course, don't miss taking a dip in the elaborately tiled swimming pool where Davies swam with the likes of Charlie Chaplin, Clark Gable, and Cary Grant. The adult sunset swims are a particular highlight.

Eat at Santa Monica's best retro restaurants

Near the end of America's most famous drive is Mel's Drive-In – a suitably retro burger joint housed in a Googie-style building designed by prolific "modern" architects Armet and Davis. Inside is a step back in time – high chairs line the counter, patrons sip milkshakes at '60s-style leather booths and a jukebox plays timeless rock ‘n’ roll tunes. Meanwhile, two blocks from the beach, and kitsch in equal measure, is The Galley – believed to be the oldest restaurant in Santa Monica and one of the first in the state. Dressed with nautical junk, red fairy lights and props from the 1962 movie Mutiny on the Bounty , this was once a hangout spot for 1930s movie stars Carole Lombard, Charles Laughton, Errol Flynn, and Edward G Robinson. The seafood and steak are surprisingly good for such a kitschy spot.

Two guitarists busk in a pedestrianized zone with plenty of onlookers

People watch on Third Street Promenade

The tree-lined Third Street Promenade is a rare thing in Southern California – a half-mile-long pedestrian-only road. There are plenty of restaurants, bars, and stores to crawl, but the best way to soak up the atmosphere is to grab a table outside and catch one of the many live street performers, ranging from musicians and comedians to breakdancers and magicians.

Browse one man's life-long curios collection

Part museum, part curiosity shop, part prop rental company, jAdis houses one man's collection of "touches of mankind’s genius". Its doors open at certain times each week, so inquisitive folks can peruse flipbooks and plasma lights, vintage 1930s bathing suits and peculiar scientific instruments or whimsical steampunk contraptions. It also holds a replica of the robot from Fritz Lang’s 1927 film Metropolis .

Visit the Santa Monica Farmers Market

To meet the locals, head to one of the three weekly Santa Monica Farmers Markets , each attracting between 3000 and 10,000 visitors. Local producers and crafters tout their organic fruits, vegetables, flowers, baked goods, and seafood catches here. There's usually free live music to enjoy as you tuck into your bounty. Markets take place on Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday mornings.

This iconic building dates back to 1916 when it was brought to life by the famous carousel and amusement park designer Charles I.D. Looff. Must do things in Santa Monica: Original Muscle Beach

Stopping off at the Original Muscle Beach is a must on any Santa Monica bucket list. Located right on Santa Monica Beach, just steps away from the Santa Monica Pier, this is considered to be the birthplace of the physical fitness trend in the US.

Not to be confused with Muscle Beach Venice , which got its start much later, the Original Muscle Beach has its roots in Santa Monica. This is the place where top athletes, stuntmen, gymnasts, and acrobats would train and show off their skills (and muscles) beginning in the 1930s.

This famous outdoor gym featured city-provided equipment, including weightlifting equipment used by the country’s most famous bodybuilders at the time. Today, the space is a fun, free fitness area complete with climbing ropes, parallel and uneven bars, and ring swings for acrobats and gymnasts.

Muscle Beach Venice was created as an homage to the Original Muscle Beach in Santa Monica. Much like the original, Venice Muscle Beach features an outdoor space with everything from weightlifting equipment to acrobatic bars to rope climbing.

Then there’s the Giant Housemade Biscuit Sando with eggs, fried chicken, cheese, and bacon or the Stuffed Cheesy Hash Brown & Crispy Chicken. There are plenty of creative sweet waffle dishes and french toast concoctions, too.

14. Splash Around at the Annenberg Community Beach House

Spending the afternoon at the Annenberg Community Beach House is easily one of the coolest things to do in Santa Monica. You’ll find this gem overlooking the north end of Santa Monica Beach near Palisades Park.

This cool Santa Monica attraction is located on the site of what was once a 110-room mansion built by William Randolph Hearst for actress Marion Davies. Although the mansion was demolished, the grand pool was repurposed and is now open to the public, as is the massive newly-built pool house.

This is a popular spot for families to splash around in the public swimming pool. There’s also a playground and splash pad for little ones. The adults in your crew will love joining in on one of the fitness classes, which range from yoga to beach volleyball. places to visit santa monica

 TripSavvy / Christian Hundley

While most people visiting Los Angeles think of Santa Monica because of its famous beach and pier, there are plenty of other things to see and do. From shopping and nightlife to art appreciation, quirky museums, and luxurious spas, there's enough going on here to keep any visitor busy for a day, a weekend or even longer, depending on your interests. Health and wellness are a major highlight of the Santa Monica lifestyle, and as a result, the area has become a favorite retreat for those who just want to relax and pamper themselves. It's also one of the best places in L.A. to settle in for a few days and start feeling like one of the locals.

Unleash Your Inner Child at Pacific Park

Pacific Park is a perfect stop for anyone traveling with little ones or those who are young at heart and in search of some nostalgic thrills. Located right on Santa Monica Pier, the amusement park offers 12 rides, including the Pacific Wheel Ferris wheel, the West Coaster (an oceanfront steel roller coaster), Shark Frenzy (a shark-themed version of the classic Tilt-A-Whirl ride), Inkie's Scrambler, a 44-foot tower plunge ride, and a giant swinging wooden ship, among other thrill rides.

Several kiddie rides are also available, as are traditional amusement park games like Whac-A-Mole, Balloon Bust, Mini Hoops, and Ring Toss. Fuel up with funnel cake, burgers, pizza, pretzels, popcorn, cotton candy, and ice cream from one of the many onsite restaurants and food vendors and shop for Santa Monica Pier souvenirs to remember your trip by.

About a 40-minute drive from downtown Santa Monica, the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area offers 157,700 acres of stunning outdoor scenery and over 500 miles of trails perfect for hiking. Other popular activities here include mountain biking, climbing, horseback riding, wildflower viewing, and camping. If you're looking for a break from all the hustle and bustle of the big city, definitely check out this beautiful western corner of Los Angeles County.

Spend Some Time at Santa Monica Pier

Boden / Ledingham / Getty Images

There's a lot going on at Santa Monica Pier , home to the aforementioned  Pacific Park as well as the legendary and historic 1920s carousel , which features 44 wooden animals and was featured in the classic Paul Newman and Robert Redford film, "The Sting." It is also where you'll find the  Heal the Bay Aquarium , which we'll get into a bit later, and the Los Angeles outpost of the New York Trapeze School , where you can realize all your circus trapeze fantasies like a pro. In addition to the food court, there are several restaurants to suit every budget and taste.  Summer concerts  are sometimes held on the extended south side of the pier, so check the events schedule on the website before planning your trip. If anything, stop by long enough to catch a beautiful California sunset.

Relax on Santa Monica Beach

TripSavvy / Christian Hundley

Located right next to the popular pier, Santa Monica Beach is one of the best spots in the Los Angeles area to just sit back and enjoy the sun, surf, and sand, as well as a plethora of other beach activities you can do along the water. Grab a picnic blanket and spend some time unwinding along the Pacific, whether you prefer to flip through a book or magazine, or just sit and listen to the waves crashing along the shore. For a real treat, stick around for sunset.

Learn About Marine Life at Heal the Bay Aquarium

Heal the Bay Aquarium , located at the foot of the Santa Monica Pier, is a a great place to learn more about Pacific sealife, since the facility is run as a marine education center by the non-profit Heal the Bay. While it's nowhere near as large as the Aquarium of the Pacific in Long Beach, Heal the Bay Aquarium still showcases more than 100 sea animals and plants found in Santa Monica Bay, featuring lots of sea creatures you can touch.

Go for a Stroll Along the Third Street Promenade

TripSavvy / Kayte Deioma

Third Street Promenade is one of the L.A. area's best pedestrian shopping zones. Street performers provide a festive atmosphere on evenings, weekends, and daily during the summer. While many of the unique shops and food stalls that once gave the Promenade its charm have been replaced by chain stores and restaurant franchises, it's still a lively place to be. The pedestrian zone stretches three blocks from Broadway at Santa Monica Place to Wilshire Blvd.

Climb the Santa Monica Stairs

One free activity that draws fitness buffs looking for a good workout is climbing the Santa Monica Stairs. There are two sets of very steep stairs stretching from Adelaide Drive at the top to Entrada Drive at the bottom. If you search on Google Maps for the Santa Monica Stairs, you'll be directed to 699 Adelaide, the address of house across from the top of the stairway pictured here. You'll find free street parking at the top and bottom, but since most people go to Adelaide Drive, it's sometimes easier to find parking on Entrada Drive and start at the bottom.

Walk, Bike or Skate Your Way Along "The Strand"

The Marvin Braude Bike Trail, better known as "The Strand," is a 22-mile paved trail that runs from Will Rogers State Beach just north of Santa Monica to Torrance Beach in the south. There are plenty of places to rent bikes or skates so you can spend an hour or all day biking or skating along several miles of paved beach path that stretch as far south as Redondo Beach or north to Malibu. You'll find at least three  bike and skate rental shops offering varying types of equipment right on or near the Santa Monica Pier.

Try Your Hand at Surfing

Surfing is allowed between lifeguard towers 18 and 20, located at Pico Boulevard and Bay Street, and between 28 and 29, located at Ashland Avenue and Pier Street. A number of surf schools and private instructors are available to help would-be surfers at any state—whether you're a beginner, intermediate, or advanced surfer—as is rental equipment. As a rule, always check in with the lifeguards before you start surfing.

Embrace Your Inner Aviation Geek at the Museum of Flying

Founded in 1974 by Donald Douglas, Jr., the second president of the Douglas Aircraft Company, the Museum of Flying opened in its current location in 2012 on the grounds of the Santa Monica Airport. The museum features several exhibits related to the Douglas Aircraft Company, as well as other historic planes, replicas, and models, including the Douglas DC-3 Spirit of Santa Monica you'll see out front, built at Douglas Aircraft in Santa Monica in 1942. Also worth checking out: a FedEx airplane cockpit that you can climb into for photo-ops.

Go Swimming at the Annenberg Community Beach House

 TripSavvy / Christian Hundley

The Annenberg Community Beach House is a public swimming pool, community center, and gallery located right on the beach at the northern end of Santa Monica State Beach. The property, which initially featured a 100-room mansion William Randolph Hearst had built for Marion Davies in the 1920s, has gone through various incarnations as a hotel and beach club over the years. The villa itself was torn down in 1956, while the beach club continued operating until the 1994 Northridge Earthquake, after which the city drew up new plans but lacked funding to implement them. Thankfully, Wallis Annenberg of the Annenberg Foundation came to the rescue and provided grant funding for the project.

In 2009, the Annenberg Community Beach House opened with the historic pool and the Marion Davies Guesthouse restored to their former glory, and brand new event spaces and recreation offerings, like beach volleyball, tennis, and soccer courts. Some can be reserved for a fee; others are free on a first-come-first-served basis.

See a Show at the The Eli and Edythe Broad Stage

The 500-seat Broad Stage  (pronounced "brode") at Santa Monica College's Performing Arts Center is the largest and the most technologically advanced performing arts space currently operating in the area. There are two theaters, the main Broad Stage and the more intimate 100-seat black-box theater, The Edye. Performances here range from classical to cutting-edge, across theater, dance, and music, and have featured legendary artists like Patti LuPone, Mikhail Baryshnikov, Helen Hunt, and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band, among others.

Visit the California Heritage Museum

TreipSavvy / Christian Hundley

Stop by the California Heritage Museum , located in a historic residence in the heart of Main Street, for a look at exhibits highlighting American decorative and fine arts. Past collections include a 30-year retrospective of quilts by textile artist Alice Beasley, photographs taken of the legendary Andy Warhol, and paintings inspired by a California road trip by Suong Yangchareon.

See a Show at the Westside Comedy Theater

The improv, stand-up, and variety comedy club has gained a firm fan base since it opened in an alley behind the Third Street Promenade back in 2009. Stop by for a comedy class or to see the pros in action. You never know who will show up—past celebrity drop-ins have included comedians like Dana Carvey, Dave Chappelle, Zack Galifianakis, Hannibal Buress, Chris Tucker, and Kevin Pollak. If you're visiting the area in late-October, stick around for the Westside Comedy Festival, which is always a treat.

From roller coasters to iconic restaurants, shops, games, and beautiful coastal views, the Santa Monica Pier is one of the most recognizable, must-see spots in Los Angeles!

The Santa Monica Pier, with its amusement park, beach, and proximity to the city, is one of the most iconic attractions for visitors to Los Angeles and Southern California.

It hasn’t gained its reputation as a national historic landmark without reason!

With a whole week’s worth of attractions packed onto one beautiful pier, there’s something for everyone.

For a first-timer, however, the plentiful activities and bustling crowds may feel a tad fast-paced if you’re going in blind!

Amidst the rides and games, street performers, vendors selling art and Santa Monica Pier souvenirs, and cars driving right out over the ocean, there is movement in all directions at all times on the pier.

If you’re anything like me, this amount of action can be equally exciting and overwhelming at times. To help with this, I like to show up with an idea of what to expect and where to invest my time and energy.

From my several experiences visiting the pier both alone and with friends and family, I’ve compiled a Santa Monica Pier guide.

The carousel was originally constructed in 1922 and remains available to ride Monday-Thursday from 10am-5pm, and Friday-Sunday from 11am-7pm. It costs $3 for all riders. It’s also wheelchair accessible!

Check Out The Playland Arcade

The lit-up sign on the facade of the Playland Arcade at sunset.

The Playland Arcade dates back to the 1950s! It offers all the best of 20th-century arcade nostalgia, including air hockey, Skeeball, pinball, foosball, and lots more!

This iconic Santa Monica Pier arcade is located right beside Pacific Park. It’s open daily from 10am-10pm and is one of the must-do activities on the pier.

Witness the students training at the Trapeze School!

Perhaps one of the most unique attractions of the Santa Monica Pier is the Trapeze School .

Adjacent to the Playland Arcade, go watch as trapeze and aerial arts students fly through the air right before your eyes! It’s a free circus show!

Visit the Iconic Route 66 Sign & Last Stop Shop

The original Route 66 sign at the end of the Santa Monica Pier marks the end of the historic American highway.

There, you can visit the Last Stop Shop for one-of-a-kind “Route 66” merch to commemorate the iconic American east-to-west route.

Santa Monica Pier Events

A light blue lifeguard's office on the beach, with the rides at the Santa Monica Pier boardwalk behind it.

In addition to all of the year round attractions on the Santa Monica Pier, there are special events throughout the year on the pier! Here are some festivities that the Santa Monica Pier hosts:

  • In June, catch the Santa Monica Pier 360 Beach Festival for free, all ages family fun, or check out the PRIDE festival and PRIDE events happening all month!
  • Later in the summer, the pier is a perfect place to spend the 4th of July or Wednesday evenings for the Twilight Summer music series , with concerts running until late August-September.
  • During non-summer months, meet Santa Monicans at Third Thursday’s Locals Night: Once a month, join the car show, music, youth activities, and more!
  • Wellness & Waves : A weekly community event focused on health and wellness activities.

What to Eat at the Santa Monica Pier

Crowds of people walking on the boardwalk in front of the red-and white painted Pier Burger at the Santa Monica Pier.

Amidst all the action, there are plenty of choices for food right on the pier, as well as around the Santa Monica area.

Below is a list of dining options ranging from grab-and-go to fine dining, both in and around the Santa Monica Pier.

On the Pier:

  • Soda Jerks: Inside the historic carousel building, Soda Jerks appeals to nostalgia with classic 1940s American ice cream and soda shop vibes.
  • PierBurger : A classic all-American burger joint with window service as well as indoor and outdoor dining.
  • Bubba Gump Shrimp : Arguably the most famous of the Santa Monica Pier restaurants, Bubba Gump Shrimp is part of the iconic American seafood chain made famous by the film Forest Gump.
  • Seaside on the Pier : Fresh seafood and classic American food in a casual setting.

Off the Pier:

  • Cassia: An award-winning, upscale South Asian cuisine spot recognized as one of LA’s top restaurants. One of the more pricey dining options.
  • Birdie G’s: American cuisine with Eastern European influence served in a trendy, industrial setting in Bergamot Station.
  • Crudo e Nudo : Local, fresh seafood with modern Italian twists, in a cozy setting.

History & Fun Facts About the Santa Monica Pier

Amusement park rides on the boardwalk at the Santa Monica Pier, with ocean waves beneath it and a partly-cloudy sky behind it.

The Santa Monica Pier was built in 1909 and became the West Coast’s first concrete pier, reaching 1600 feet into the ocean!

Interestingly, the Santa Monica Pier was originally designed to help with the city’s sewage disposal into the ocean.

The original purpose was abandoned quickly (thank goodness!), and the pier instantly became a favorite destination for fishing and other forms of leisure.

In 1916, entrepreneur Charles Looff constructed the Looff Pleasure Pier on the municipal pier. His first project was the carousel, which still operates today!

Looff’s vision then expanded to include a roller coaster, bowling and billiards, and a games room.

The pier has a long history of resilience between the Great Depression and a devastating storm in 1983, which destroyed a third of the pier.

In 1996 the Pacific Park opened, returning the pier to its former amusement status with a rollercoaster and many more rides and games!

  • The white and blue arch of the Santa Monica Yacht Harbor is a historical icon dating back to the 1940s internationally renowned boat dock. The first person to buy space for his boat was Charlie Chaplin, making this a popular location for tourists to see stars.
  • The Pier collapsed during the Great Depression, causing one LA local to open a casino on his boat off the shore. For some time, the pier was a seedier, not-so-family-friendly place.
  • The pier has been featured in several Hollywood films, including Forest Gump, The Sting, Hancock, Her, 2012, Iron Man, Rocky 3 , and many more!
  • The Pacific Wheel is the world’s first solar-powered ferris wheel!

Santa Monica Pier Directions, Parking & How to Get There

A view of the road and parking lot for the Santa Monica Pier, with amusement park rides and the beach in the background.

If you’re driving

If you’re heading to Santa Monica by car, the area is located right on the Pacific Coast Highway, making it a popular stop for California road-trippers heading south down the coast.

Parking is made easier thanks to this real-time parking map . Here are a few of my preferred locations:

  • Parking lot on the Pier | 300 Santa Monica Pier
  • Lot 1 North | 1550 Appian Way
  • Hot Dog on a Stick | 1633 Ocean Front Walk

Other options

There’s also an accessible city transit system in LA that offers relatively direct access to Santa Monica daily.

If you’re coming from Los Angeles by foot, Bus 8 Downtown Santa Monica / UCLA will bring you right to the pier at Ocean Avenue and Colorado Avenue.

Another fun option is to use LA’s bike share service , which is a bike rental platform that reaches all over Los Angeles by bicycle.

This is definitely my preferred way to get around the coastal beach areas in order to avoid looking for parking!

Best Time to Visit the Santa Monica Pier

People strolling on the beach at sunset, with the Santa Monica Pier in the background.

While the Santa Monica Pier is bustling year-round, it is definitely most lively through the summer months, May-September.

This is when many of the events happen, the Trapeze school is open, and all the street performers are out to share their tricks.

That said, it can get quite hot between July and August. Make sure you prepare the family for the summer heat or spend part of the day on Santa Monica State Beach!

I would also recommend an earlier start if you’re hoping to find convenient parking and beat some of the lines.

Try to get there around 10:30-11am and stay into the early afternoon, and then perhaps stroll down off the pier onto Ocean Avenue and find yourself a nice spot for food in the area.

Tips for Visiting the Santa Monica Pier

Silhouette of amusement park rides at the Santa Monica Pier, with the sun setting behind it.

  • If you’re visiting on a budget, I’d recommend eating breakfast beforehand or hitting one of the fruit stands or coffee kiosks down the beach on the boardwalk before the pier. This will save you a couple of bucks on food before you get started!
  • Save the solar-powered ferris wheel for sunset and take in the stunning views of the horizon! Santa Monica Pier at night is absolutely beautiful.
  • After a day spent on the pier, take a bike ride south along the bike paths beside the beach and parks at sunset, and find yourself in Venice Beach for the evening!
  • Santa Monica hotels can be surprisingly affordable, especially if you choose to go a little bit more inland–just remember to book in advance.

What is so special about the Santa Monica Pier? Is it Worth Visiting?

Six young people in bathing suits laughing and splashing water at the each other in the waves at the beach, with the Santa Monica Pier behind them.

So, is it worth all the hype?

Absolutely. Taking a walk along the pier, hanging out at the nearby Santa Monica State Beach, eating from all the food stalls, and admiring the beautiful sunset–there’s not much better.

It’s definitely a really fun way to spend a Los Angeles summer day with the family and experience so many iconic establishments. It’s a must-see for a Los Angeles visitor and an iconic Southern California staple!

Why Go To Santa Monica

When you need a break from action-packed Los Angeles , do as the locals do and head west to Santa Monica. Easily accessible from LA via major thoroughfares like Santa Monica Boulevard and the Santa Monica Freeway (a stretch of Interstate 10), this chic California beach community offers a welcome respite from the hustle and bustle of its big-city neighbor. The western side of Santa Monica is where you'll find its two main attractions – gorgeous Santa Monica State Beach and the family-friendly Santa Monica Pier. But there's so much more to this destination than its famous beach and pier . Step off of the sand to bike the scenic Marvin Braude Beach Trail and lounge in Santa Monica's beautiful parks. Or, enjoy some retail therapy and people-watching at the Third Street Promenade  before grabbing a bite to eat at one of the city's highly regarded restaurants. No matter how you choose to pass the time, you'll instantly feel at ease in Santa Monica.

Santa Monica Travel Tips

Best months to visit.

The best time to visit Santa Monica is between September and November. During these fall months, you'll enjoy some of the warmest weather of the year while avoiding the extra thick crowds found in June, July and August, meaning you can comfortably lounge at the beach and explore popular attractions like the Santa Monica Pier and the Third Street Promenade . Plus, you'll likely find deals for accommodations and airfare when you time your visit for fall. If you're sticking to a budget and don't mind a higher likelihood of rain – though showers are few and far between thanks to the roughly 280 days of sunshine the city sees annually – consider arriving in December, January or February. Deals are occasionally available in spring, too. However, March and April's influx of spring breakers may detract from the city's relaxed vibe. Expect to pay more if you plan on visiting during the peak summer season: Families flock here in June, July and August to soak up some sun while the kids are out of school.

What You Need to Know

It's a happy medium Santa Monica is an appealing destination for travelers of all ages and interests compared to neighboring beach communities. It features a more kid-friendly setting than adult-oriented  Venice Beach  and a more approachable (yet equally sophisticated) atmosphere than exclusive Malibu.

The food scene is top-notch Even the pickiest of eaters will find something they like in Santa Monica thanks to the city's diverse selection of restaurants. In addition to serving everything from California fusion cuisine and farm-to-table fare to authentic Mexican, Japanese and Jamaican dishes, many of Santa Monica's eateries can accommodate vegans, gluten-free patrons and others with special dietary requests.

Parking can be a challenge Like LA , driving is the main way to get around Santa Monica, so you may occasionally have a hard time finding parking. To increase your chances of securing a spot near busy areas like the Third Street Promenade and the Santa Monica Pier , visit on a weekday. On nights and weekends (especially during the peak summer season), consider using a third-party service like ParkWhiz  or SpotHero to reserve a space in advance.

How to Save Money in Santa Monica

Visit in winter Though it may be a little chilly (think: daytime highs in the low to mid-60s) at the beach in December, January and February, these winter months see the fewest visitors, meaning you can expect to find lower hotel prices and more travel deals.

Do your homework when picking accommodations Most of Santa Monica's beachfront properties are four- to five-star hotels with high nightly rates. Consider staying a few blocks back from the beach or at a hotel south of Santa Monica – Venice Beach and the communities by Los Angeles International Airport are good places to look – if you're sticking to a tight budget.

Resist the urge to splurge Santa Monica's downtown area is packed with high-end boutiques, pricey amusement park  rides and upscale restaurants. To reduce your overall trip costs, walk around the city's malls and pier, which are free to visit, without making any purchases. For affordable dining, skip Santa Monica's expensive steakhouses and seafood restaurants and instead head to a more casual spot away from the beach.

Avoid renting a car It may be convenient to have your own set of wheels, but paying for parking can quickly put a dent in your wallet. If don't plan on venturing to more obscure parts of the surrounding area, skip renting a car and instead get around by bike or public transportation. The LA Metro 's Expo Line has a station in the city center by Santa Monica Place and the Third Street Promenade, while Santa Monica's Big Blue Bus features multiple routes that travel throughout the city.

Santa Monica's 3 ½ miles of beautiful sands are ideal for everything from sunbathing to biking to working out.
