Medical Tourism In Turkey: 10 Important Things To Know Before You Visit

In the past, medical tourism was a term that usually referred to people from less-developed countries traveling abroad for medical treatment that wasn’t available in their home country. However, with the rising costs of healthcare in developed countries, medical tourism in Turkey and other developing countries keeps increasing. A lot of people choose to have their surgery abroad and enjoy a medical vacation at the same time.

Oftentimes, the combined cost of the two is lower than the fee for surgery in their home country. That’s why countries like Turkey, Thailand , and India are becoming popular medical tourism destinations. In this article, we’ll focus on medical tourism in Turkey and see why this country attracts almost one million medical tourists every year!

The Growth Of Medical Tourism In Turkey

cruise in Turkey

Turkey is one of only a few countries that stretches over two different continents and a popular tourist destination that’s slowly turning into a medical tourism destination. With its mesmerizing sandy beaches and cities full of history , Turkey has always been a popular tourist destination. However, not too many people realize that Turkey is one of the world’s best destinations for medical tourism.

Over the course of the last couple of decades, large-scale investments by the public and private sectors significantly improved the country’s medical infrastructure. The government recently launched a lot of state-of-the-art City Hospitals across the country, while private hospitals also invested heavily in their facilities, implementing services and capacities designed to cater to patients from foreign countries.

As a consequence, medical tourism in Turkey has been booming, especially in the last few years. In 2018, Turkey welcomed more than 850,000 medical tourists from 149 different countries, according to the Turkish Healthcare Travel Council . Additionally, Turkey’s national carrier, Turkish Airlines, provides discounted flight fares  to people traveling in Turkey for medical tourism.

What Makes Turkey A Great Medical Tourism Destination?

Based on installed capacities, Turkey is the fourth geothermal country in the world, falling behind only the US, the Philippines , and Indonesia. In case you didn’t know, geothermal hot water is widely used in medicine. This, combined with the highly-qualified workforce and well-equipped hospitals makes Turkey one of the world’s best medical tourism destinations.

Additionally, the number of accredited hospitals specializing in cardiology, transplantation, plastic surgery, and advanced oncotherapy has been growing exponentially over the last two decades. Furthermore, after the launch of Istanbul’s new airport, patients from over 50 countries will be able to reach Istanbul with a four-hour flight. Taking all this into consideration, we can safely assume that medical tourism in Turkey will only keep growing. Another great reason that points to that direction is…

Cost Comparisons With Western Countries

Istanbul view

Compared to the EU and the US, a lot of surgical fees are 50-60% lower in Turkey. Hence, it makes sense for a lot of people to travel to Turkey , have surgery over there, and even have an extended holiday- and still spend less money than what they would have to pay for the treatment in their native country. For example, an angioplasty procedure in the United States costs around $48,000 (on average).

In Turkey, the same procedure costs $5,000, which is even cheaper than in countries like Thailand, India, and Singapore. Furthermore, knee joint replacements cost around $50,000 in the US, while in Turkey, this procedure would cost only $11,000.

But the list doesn’t end there. The fees for cosmetic procedures like hair transplants are also significantly lower in Turkey. For example, in the UK, hair transplants cost up to £30,000, making them too expensive for most people. Despite the side effects , many seek the treatment to avoid the depression that comes with hair loss.

In Turkey, on the other hand, the same treatment costs between $1,000 and $2,500. Medical tourism in Turkey has opened an escape route for those struggling financially and created a medium for them through which they can receive high-quality medical care at lower prices.

And last but not least, Turkey has an abundance of beautiful places to visit , an endless list of tourist attractions, a superb tourist infrastructure, and some of the finest family-oriented resorts in the Mediterranean.

High Standards Of Medical Care And Accreditation

medical tourism in turkey

In Turkey, hospitals earn accolades through rigorous standards and impeccable patient care. With a slew of JCI-accredited (Joint Commission International) facilities, Turkey stands tall on the global stage. From robotic surgery assistants that offer precision beyond human capability to 3D imaging that gives doctors X-ray vision, Turkish hospitals are living in 3020 while we’re all stuck in 2020.

One of the biggest draws to Turkey for medical tourists isn’t just the cost – although, let’s face it, getting a new set of pearly whites for the price of a designer handbag is nothing to sniff at. It’s the warmth, care, and attention to detail from medical staff.

Popular Medical Procedures In Turkey

medical tourism in turkey

Turkey is practically the global capital of hair transplants . The country’s surgeons have turned hair transplantation into an art.

In the mood for a new nose or a perkier posterior? Turkish cosmetic surgeons are like the Michelangelos of the modern era, sculpting bodies and faces with a finesse that even Instagram filters can’t match.

Turkey makes dental work almost a pleasure. Whether it’s veneers, implants, or just a routine check-up, Turkish dentists are turning frowns upside down.

From LASIK to cataract surgery , Turkey offers a range of eye procedures that could give an eagle a run for its money.

Turkey is on the front lines in the battle against cancer , offering innovative treatments and therapies.

For matters of the heart—literally—Turkey’s cardiology centers offer procedures ranging from bypass surgery to angioplasty.

Knee replacements, hip surgery, spinal treatments—you name it, Turkey’s got it. The country’s orthopedic surgeons are helping people walk out of their clinics feeling decades younger.

Selecting The Right Healthcare Facility And Doctor

turkey hospital

Find the centers that have international accreditation, such as JCI (Joint Commission International). It is like a Michelin star for hospitals. Furthermore, make sure that the facility is specialized in the procedure you are looking to take (i.e. it might be a good center for hair transplantation but not-so-good for dental procedures).

Reading the doctor’s biodata and going through reviews before choosing is important. Focus on qualities, years of work, and patient testimonials. Make sure the hospital staff can speak your language or offer translating services.

Pre and post-operative care is as significant as the surgery itself. Look for centers that will provide you with detailed recovery services.

Visa Requirements And Travel Arrangements

sinop turkey cheap honeymoon destinations

Turkey’s visa policy offers various options based on your country of origin. Most travelers can secure an e-visa with a few clicks—less hassle than choosing a Netflix show on a Friday night. And if you’re coming from any country in Europe, the Mediterranean, or the US, chances are, you don’t need a visa at all.

Insurance Coverage And Financial Considerations

medical tourism in turkey

Before setting sail, check with your insurance provider whether your policy covers international medical procedures. Some insurers might treat your Turkish medical escapade as an out-of-network adventure, which can affect coverage levels. It’s akin to finding out your all-you-can-eat buffet has limits. There are, however, specialized medical tourism insurance policies that cover complications and travel issues, acting like a double scoop of protection on your financial security sundae.

Accredited hospitals: There are more than 50 JCI-accredited hospitals in Turkey. Most of them are located in Istanbul, Bursa, Antalya , Izmir, Adana, and Kocaeli. All of them satisfy the same standards as EU countries, as Turkey has been aiming to enter the union for over two decades. Waiting time: The average waiting time for complicated surgical procedures in the Western world is quite long. In Turkey, the average waiting time is incomparably shorter. The list of activities that you can indulge in when visiting Turkey is endless. Depending on which season you choose to undergo your surgery and the geographical location, it’s safe to assume that you’ll find some interesting things to do throughout the year. You can visit one of the many ancient monuments, just relax on one of the many pristine, beautiful beaches, or experience the culture of the country that connects the East and the West.

Hence, the well-deserving nickname, the crossroad of the world . In fact, this is one of Turkey’s strategic advantages- that it can easily welcome patients from a large geographic scope. As Napoleon said it: ‘If the world was only one country, Istanbul would be its capital’ and seeing everything Istanbul has to offer , I can see what he meant. If you’re looking to see the best of Turkey in a short period (while recovering or waiting for your surgery date), this tour by G Adventures is a great choice .

You can try to arrange your own accommodation, transportation, and sightseeing but it’s virtually impossible to do that and spend less than what you’d pay for this amazing tour.

Most medical tourists choose cities like Istanbul , Antalya, and Ankara, which also are some of Turkey’s most famous tourist destinations. However, a lot of people disregard that there are a lot of high-quality hospitals in the north of Turkey, which also is one of the least visited parts of the country, despite the plethora of activities it offers to visitors.

This is the first time I heard about Turkey as a medical destination. Reading through the prices, no wonder people are flying into Turkey for medical procedures. If I have to go there for this reason, I will still look into hospitals that are recommended by the expats living there.

Absolutely, that's important Umiko but as I mentioned, Turkey has more than 50 JCI-accredited hospitals, which is a really high number and all of these have state-of-the-art equipment and very qualified personnel.

I am from India, and I have seen first hand how medical tourism has boomed here over the last two decades. As compared to developed nations, services are cheaper here and the quality of treatment is one of the best. It's good to know that Turkey is also in that league. And how nice to get a discount on flight tickets.

Absolutely, Suman. I stayed in India for a year and I can confirm that. Turkey is indeed, in the same league and the government has been doing whatever it can to support medical tourism in the country.

On the one hand, it is strange to read about how nice the weather is or great excursions as a reason for why a country is high on the list for medical tourism. For me, I would only be concerned about how good the doctors were and the cost. But, I guess if you have other countries competing for the same dollars, and you have equally good medical care, then turning to the weather and what you can do while you are recuperating would be important considerations. Thanks for the interesting read.

It actually is important for the recovery process and a lot of people choose destinations that can help them recover faster. The surrounding and the atmosphere is indeed an important factor, even though not the most important one (obviously).

The only thing I knew about Turkey being a medical destination was sadly from a woman who died from cosmetic surgery there. These tragedies can happen everywhere of course. I'd just like myself to visit the country! I'm hoping to get there this year, and will hopefully see these places!

Introduction to Turkey's Medical Tourism

Turkey has fast become a global hub for medical tourism, attracting patients from all corners of the world. Known for its unique blend of traditional and modern healthcare practices, Turkey offers a wide range of medical services, from high-tech surgeries to alternative treatments, at a fraction of the cost found in other countries. Located at the crossroads of Europe and Asia, the country provides easy access for both continents, making it a convenient choice for those seeking quality healthcare abroad.

Reputation in Medical Tourism

Turkey's reputation in medical tourism is built on several pillars: affordability, high-quality healthcare, cutting-edge technology, and qualified medical professionals. Many Turkish doctors and surgeons have trained internationally, thus ensuring that medical practices are up-to-date with global standards. Medical facilities often boast state-of-the-art technology and a patient-centered approach, aiming for the highest level of patient satisfaction.

Historical Significance in Medicine

Turkey’s historical roots in medicine can be traced back to ancient times when scholars in the region made significant contributions to the field. From the Byzantine period to the Ottoman era, Turkish medicine was known for its focus on practical applications of medical knowledge. This has evolved into a modern healthcare system that combines the best of traditional and modern medicine. The time-honored Turkish practice of thermal baths and natural springs also finds its way into rehabilitative care, offering a holistic approach to health and well-being.

Cultural Influence in Medicine

Turkey’s unique location as a bridge between East and West reflects in its healthcare system. With an array of traditional treatments, including herbal remedies and physiotherapy methods rooted in Turkish culture, medical tourists often find a more comprehensive approach to care. This cultural influence adds another layer to Turkey’s appeal as a medical tourism destination.

Popular Medical Procedures

List of popular procedures.

Turkey is particularly renowned for its specializations in cosmetic surgery, dental care, cardiology, orthopedics, and oncology. Here, medical tourists can find a wide range of services, from rhinoplasty and liposuction to spinal surgeries and heart bypass operations.

Specializations and Pioneering Treatments

One area where Turkey has garnered global attention is in hair transplantation techniques. The country is a leading provider of FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) and DHI (Direct Hair Implantation), utilizing advanced technology and techniques to offer seamless procedures. Additionally, Turkey has made significant strides in robotic surgeries, especially in urology and cardiology.

Top Hospitals & Clinics

Renowned institutions.

Turkey is home to a range of high-quality medical institutions. Some of the top hospitals include Ankara City Hospital, Medipol Mega University Hospital, and Acıbadem Healthcare Group, which have state-of-the-art facilities and highly trained staff.

Accreditation and Affiliation

Many Turkish hospitals are accredited by international organizations, such as the Joint Commission International (JCI), which assures that healthcare providers meet rigorous global standards.

Special Features and Awards

Several Turkish hospitals have received international awards for their excellence in various medical fields, from patient care to technological innovation. Special features often include VIP rooms, multilingual staff, and even liaison officers to assist international patients during their stay.

Cost Comparison

Comparative data.

One of the most attractive aspects of medical tourism in Turkey is the cost. Treatments can be up to 60-80% cheaper compared to countries like the United States, the UK, or Western Europe. For instance, a coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) in Turkey may cost around $15,000-$20,000, compared to $70,000-$120,000 in the United States.

Price Ranges

While costs can vary widely depending on the facility and the treatment, the general trend shows substantial savings across the board. Cosmetic surgeries, for example, often fall within a range of $2,000-$4,000, compared to upwards of $10,000 in other countries.

Quality & Safety

Medical standards and practices.

Turkey's healthcare system adheres to international standards and protocols to ensure patient safety and high-quality services. Hospitals often boast modern facilities, advanced diagnostic and treatment technologies, and qualified medical professionals, including internationally-trained staff. The country's robust healthcare infrastructure is one of the reasons why it is a popular destination for medical tourism.

Accreditation Systems and Regulatory Bodies

In Turkey, hospitals are regularly inspected and accredited by national and international bodies. Besides international accreditations like the Joint Commission International (JCI), many Turkish hospitals also undergo audits from the Ministry of Health. These accreditations serve as a benchmark for quality and are a testament to the high standards of healthcare services offered.

Quality Checks and Patient Safety

Patient safety protocols in Turkey are stringent, often exceeding international standards. These include infection control measures, emergency services, and strict regulations for surgical procedures. Patient rights are also highly respected, with detailed consent forms and privacy policies in place.

Patient Rights

In Turkey, medical facilities have dedicated departments to inform patients about their rights, responsibilities, and the details of treatments they will undergo. Informed consent, the right to privacy, and confidentiality are emphasized as fundamental patient rights.

Medical Visa Information

Guidelines and requirements.

For those visiting Turkey specifically for medical treatment, a medical visa may be required. These are generally short-term visas where applicants must provide evidence of their medical appointment and financial means to pay for the treatment.

Duration, Documentation, and Application Process

A medical visa to Turkey usually has a validity period of up to 90 days, extendable depending on the treatment period. Necessary documents often include a valid passport, a visa application form, medical insurance, and a letter from the Turkish medical institution confirming the treatment. The application process is generally straightforward and can be completed online or at Turkish consulates.

Travel-Related Advisories

There are no significant travel restrictions related to medical visas, but it's essential to keep updated with Turkey's entry requirements, which may change due to global health conditions.

Cultural Considerations

Local customs and etiquette.

While Turkey is a modern and cosmopolitan country, it is also rich in traditions. A general understanding of local customs and etiquette, such as respectful attire in religious places, can enhance your stay. Tipping is common but not mandatory in the service sector, including healthcare services.

Language Barriers

Turkish is the official language, but English is commonly spoken in major cities and medical facilities. Most hospitals catering to medical tourists have English-speaking staff and translators to assist international patients.

Dietary Considerations

Turkey offers a diverse range of culinary options, from traditional dishes to international cuisines. However, if you have specific dietary restrictions or needs, it's advised to inform your healthcare provider in advance.

Travel & Accommodation

Popular areas to stay.

Istanbul, Ankara, and Izmir are popular cities where most high-quality medical facilities are located. These cities offer a range of accommodation options, from budget hotels to luxury resorts.

Proximity to Medical Facilities

Most top-rated hospitals and clinics are situated close to city centers or well-connected suburban areas, making it convenient for medical tourists to travel back and forth.

Transportation Infrastructure

Turkey has a well-developed public transportation system, including subways, buses, and taxis. Many hospitals also offer shuttle services for medical tourists.

Post-Procedure Relaxation Spots

For post-treatment relaxation, Turkey offers various options, from the scenic beaches of Antalya to the historic sites in Istanbul. Some patients also opt for traditional Turkish baths for post-procedure recuperation.

Legal & Ethical Considerations

Legal rights of patients.

In Turkey, patients have the right to informed consent, confidentiality, and high-quality medical care. Failure to provide these can result in legal consequences for healthcare providers.

Medical Malpractice and Patient Recourse

Turkey has laws governing medical malpractice that protect the rights of patients. Should medical negligence occur, patients have the right to legal recourse, including financial compensation.

Ethical Considerations

Ethical considerations, such as organ transplant regulations, are strictly governed by Turkish law, which follows international standards to ensure the ethical treatment of all patients.

Benefits & Risks

Turkey offers high-quality medical services at a fraction of the cost compared to other countries. The country also provides the advantage of combining medical treatment with vacation-like amenities, including scenic locations for relaxation and recovery.

Language barriers and cultural differences are potential challenges. However, these are usually mitigated by hospitals, which provide translator services and patient liaisons to assist international visitors.

Post-Procedure Care

Post-operative care.

Top-tier Turkish hospitals offer comprehensive post-operative care, including detailed recovery plans and follow-up appointments. Many also have affiliations with rehabilitation centers to provide complete healthcare solutions.

Turkey has several world-class rehabilitation centers specializing in physical therapy, occupational therapy, and other forms of rehabilitation post-surgery or treatment.

Thinking of going to Istanbul, Turkey, for some work to be done? Medical tourism in Istanbul is a booming new industry; here is what you need to know.

Turkey Travel Blog_Medical Tourism In Istanbul

Türkiye is one of the top 10 countries for medical tourism these days, and the fact that the prices are much lower than the equivalents you’d find in the EU, USA, and UK means that more and more people are choosing to fly to Istanbul and have their treatments.

Izmir is another popular city in Turkey for medical procedures, but Istanbul is, without a doubt, the top destination. Of course, that also means you can pair your procedure with a little sightseeing once you’ve recuperated.

With lower prices, high quality of treatment and care, and packages available that combine flights, transfers, and hotels with the treatment, it’s no wonder more and more people are choosing Türkiye for their medical needs.

While prices depend upon the treatment and any anomalies, you can usually expect to pay between 50-70% less than what you would pay in the EU. That’s a huge saving.

Skip Ahead To My Advice Here!

What Are The Most Popular Procedures?

There are a huge range of medical procedures on offer for patients who travel to Turkey but the most common include:

  • Botox and fillers
  • Hair transplants
  • Dental work
  • Rhinoplasty (nose job)
  • Breast surgery
  • Liposuction and weight loss surgery

Of course, you should always do careful research before you choose a clinic and before you decide to have any procedure done. Check in with your doctor at home and talk to them about the procedure and whether it’s a good choice for you.

You should also remember to take copies of your medical records with you so that the doctors in Türkiye and check over things before agreeing to do your desired surgery.

You should expect to have a consultation before the surgery, and there is no guarantee that your surgery will go ahead until you’ve had this consultation and the doctor has checked everything out. If they agree, you can expect to have your procedure done within days.

You only have to Google ‘medical tourism in Turkey’, and you’ll see countless entries, but remember, some are better than others. This is your health, so you need to make sure that you’re attending a clinic that is top-class and offers a high level of service. Don’t always go for the lowest price – quality is always what you should be looking for.

To help you out, let’s check out some of the most popular procedures in Türkiye and a few recommendations of places to contact.

Brands We Use And Trust

Hair transplants.

Hair Transplants In Istanbul

The sheer number of men you see walking around Taksim with the tell-tale band around their head to say they’ve had a hair transplant that day or the day before is astounding. That tells you a lot about how popular this procedure is. Turkey is also among the top three countries in the world for this procedure. With low prices, it’s no wonder.

You can expect to pay somewhere in between $1500 – $3000 for a procedure, but that will vary depending upon your personal circumstances. You can also book pages that include accommodation and transfers, etc.

  • Sapphire Hair Clinic in Sisli
  • Taksim Acibadem Hospital in Taksim (Dr Karaaltin Hair Istanbul)
  • Hermest Hair Transplant Clinic Istanbul in Uskudar

Rhinoplasty (Nose Job)

Young woman before and after rhinoplasty in Istanbul

Whether you want to change the shape of your nose for aesthetic reasons or you have problems breathing, nose jobs are very popular in Istanbul. This is a procedure which is rising in popularity year upon year and after a detailed consultation, your procedure will be carried out, with extensive after-care.

  • ClinicPlast in Nisantasi
  • Dr Asu Deniz Burhanoglu in Etiler
  • M.D. Huseyin Kandulu at the Private Acibadem Hospital

Laser Liposuction, Obesity & Weight Loss Treatment

Laser liposuction is extremely popular in Turkey and it’s considerably cheaper than you will find in EU countries, the UK and USA. Due to the fact that obesity is on the rise worldwide, weight loss treatment is regularly requested and many people choose to travel to Türkiye for their procedure.

  • Dr Ceylon Aydogan in Maltese
  • Dr Firat Tutal in Sisli
  • Istanbul Bariatric Center in Sisli

Dental Treatments

Dental Tourism In Croatia

One of the most popular reasons that people travel to Istanbul for medical work is on their teeth. You’ve no doubt heard of the fact that dental work, including implants and veneers, is much cheaper in Turkey than anywhere else. Depending upon the procedure and how much extra work may be required, you can expect to pay around $500 – $750, which is a huge 70% cheaper than the EU, USA, and UK.

There are countless clinics offering teeth whitening and other procedures and it’s important to do your research beforehand. However, these are three of the best and ones you might like to check out:

  • Dentfix Istanbul Dental Clinic, Sisli
  • Eternes Dental Clinic Istanbul, Sisli
  • Esthedent Dental Clinic, Sisli

What To Watch Out For

Again, always be very careful when choosing which clinic to attend. The clinics we’ve mentioned are all very highly regarded, but simply Googling your desired treatment isn’t going to give you the best results. There are many scams out there and you’ll find people attempting to show you lower prices than they will actually charge you in the end.

Basically, if you see a price that’s too good to be true, that’s because it is. However, do bear in mind that prices for medical treatments are lower in Türkiye compared to other countries. Simply do your research and ask as many questions as you need to, before making a decision. If the clinic is a reputable and professional one, they will have no problems answering as many questions as you want to ask and they will reassure you of their quality.

There are some fantastic clinics in Istanbul. It’s really not a surprise that it’s one of the best places in the world for medical tourism. So, if you’ve been thinking about having a procedure for a while and you’re sure that it’s the right thing for you, maybe Istanbul could be the destination for you .

Travelling To Turkey for A Hair Transplant: What To Expect

You’ve made the booking, but what’s next? Many people aren’t aware of the hair transplant patient journey.

Having an idea about it will not only help you be prepared for what’s to come, but it will also make you feel less stressed. There are three stages of the whole process:

  • Before the trip
  • During the trip
  • After the trip

In recent years, Turkey has enjoyed such an influx of medical tourists that the economic boost has made it easier to travel for a procedure than ever before.

The infrastructure has improved, too. So, more and more people choose to travel to Turkey for a hair transplant.

Table of Contents

What To Do Before You Travel to Turkey

These are the things that you need to know about before you travel to Turkey for a hair transplant.

Online Consultation & Medical Travel Booking

When you first fill in the form on our website or get in touch via a call, our call centre team will set to work on finding you the best time for a consultation.

They will ask you to provide images of your hair for your assigned consultant to determine the best course of action for your particular case.

Based on the images, the surgical technique and the number of grafts that can be extracted will be determined for your hair transplant Turkey .

If you do opt to undergo the procedure, you can secure your medical plan and enable us to begin planning your travel.

Flight Bookings

After agreeing to the procedure, you will be in touch with the Reservations Team who will set to work on putting together a travel plan on your behalf.

They will compile your itinerary on your behalf, beginning with finding the best combinations of dates, prices and times for your flight.

They will then check these options against your clinics and hotels to determine the best overall plan of action before allowing you to choose which works best for your situation.

This ensures that you won’t need to go back and forth organising the travel yourself, taking the stress out of organising your procedure.

Many countries, including Turkey, will require travellers to obtain a visa to visit the country. Our reservations team can help you with the process by sending an invitation letter.

UK citizens and some Europeans travelling for medical tourism might not need one but make sure to check the website of the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA). The citizens of the Republic of Ireland need to apply for an e-visa.

The application can be filled out online. The e-visa can be downloaded or printed out after it is approved. A visa is also not a substitute for a passport. Patients should check the Turkish government website well in advance of travelling.

The application will also ensure you have all the correct documentation for travelling to Turkey for a hair transplant.

It is vital that those who are dual nationals register the passport they intend to use. If the passport shown does not match the visa, the visa and holder will be rejected.

Pack Up And Jet Off

You’re advised to stay in Turkey for about a week after your procedure, so you’ll need to pack accordingly.

Keep an eye on the weather to determine what kind of clothes you need to bring, but typically, Istanbul sees average temperatures of around 20-30 °C in summer (April to October) and below zero to 24°C over winter (December to March). So, pack accordingly.

Also, make sure to keep loose-fitting clothing as you’d need to wear that on the day of the surgery and afterwards. Remember to have all your necessary documents with you like your passport, consent forms, etc.

Pre-Operative Precautions

You will also need to follow the following instructions before the surgery takes place:

Smoking – Do not smoke 1 week before surgery and especially not on the day of the procedure because it causes the reduction of blood flow to the scalp and hair follicles.

Blood-thinners – Avoid the consumption of aspirin or any other anti-inflammatory medications for at least a week before the procedure. Also, do not take any kind of medication or supplements (like vitamin B/E) the day before the procedure without consulting the performing surgeon.

Alcohol – Consumption of alcohol should be avoided for at least a week before and after the procedure. This is advised because alcohol thins the blood, which can lead to complications.

Eat As Advised – Preoperative instructions for eating will depend on the type of anaesthetic being administered, type of procedure and individual patient case.

Medical conditions – The hair transplant team must be made aware of all medical conditions as early in the process as possible. It can affect a patient’s suitability and the success rate of a hair transplant procedure.

Haircut – You should not shave your head before coming in for your surgery. In fact, let it grow for 2 weeks before that. Your surgeon needs to assess the quality of your hair and distinctly mark the thinning/balding areas while your hair has some length to it.

Clothing – Wide necks and a minimal collar will reduce the risk of the transplant or donor area being harmed. Zip-ups or items with buttons are recommended for maximised patient comfort.

Transportation – The patient should make sure that they have proper transportation after the hair transplant in Turkey is over.

If someone is there with the patient who can drive them to the hotel, it would be better. The anaesthesia given to relieve pain and help you relax during the surgery takes time to wear off and probably will not be worn off by the time the procedure is over.

When You Come to Turkey

Once you arrive, you will experience the following:

First Appointment

The day after your arrival, you will be met at the hospital by a patient host , who will act as your central point of call for each appointment throughout your stay in Turkey.

The host will also act as a translator as you meet with your surgeon to clarify any unclear points.

First, you need to get registered at the clinic. This is required by the Turkish Ministry of Health.

Next, a blood test is compulsory. It is done to check the patient for any infectious diseases. To ensure that it’s safe to perform the surgery on you, your blood pressure will also be checked.

Following that, you’ll have your consultation with the surgeon. Throughout the first meeting with your surgeon, they will examine you to determine if you’re healthy enough for the procedure.

You will be able to discuss your expectations in more detail to ensure that both you and your surgeon understand what you’ll see post-procedure. Here, the surgeon will also draw the hairline to show you how it will look after the surgery.

It’s better if you prepare a list of questions in advance, so you don’t miss out on anything. After that, your hair will get shaved. Before the surgery, you’ll also need to sign the treatment plan forms.

The hair transplant process will differ depending on the technique chosen ( FUE , DHI , Sapphire ) for your case, but in each treatment option, you will be given a local anaesthetic .

Procedures can take up to eight hours, depending on the size of the transplant area. You will be provided with a meal, and emergency staff will be on hand.

Because of the nature of the procedure, your surgeon will advise you to rest for a couple of days after the surgery.

As a hair transplant patient, you will only be required to attend two appointments – the initial appointment at the clinic or hospital and then a check-up appointment in the following days.

It is at this point that the surgeon will check over the grafts and make sure that everything is in order.

They’ll also run you through the aftercare instructions, including washing your scalp, and any further medication you may need, including lotions and shampoos to keep the implanted hairs in the best condition.

After Your Hair Transplant In Turkey

Following the procedure, there’s aftercare.

12-Month Aftercare

In the 12 months following the procedure, we remain on hand to ensure that the results of your transplant remain optimal as they settle and begin to grow.

We can provide advice if there appear to be any issues. On your own, you need to make sure that you follow all the aftercare do’s and don’ts for the best results.

Conclusion

The first time for anything can be a bit nerve-racking. Keep in mind that you have to make bookings for the flight and get the visa on your own.

Moreover, pack your things after checking the weather.

During the stay, follow the pre-op instructions and make sure to attend all the appointments. Afterwards, do as your surgeon says for a successful recovery.

Knowing what to expect before, during and after you travel to Turkey for a hair transplant will help you better prepare for the small and big things.

At any stage of the journey, if you need help, you can get in touch with your Patient Relations Specialist.

Plastic Surgery-Related Deaths in Turkey: Still Safe to Travel?

travel to turkey for surgery

According to USHAŞ , a Turkish state-owned healthcare company, in the first three quarters of 2022, a total of 876.521 people visited Turkey to receive health services. For comparison’s sake, in terms of health tourism, 670,730 people received medical services in Turkey in 2021.

The report doesn’t specify how many of those procedures account for plastic surgery. However, it’s useful to mention that the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery ranked Turkey fifth in its 2020 report about countries with the most cosmetic procedures performed. That year, a total of 945,477 plastic surgery procedures were carried out in Turkey.

Not only is Turkey such a beautiful country to visit due to its rich history and breathtaking architecture, but it’s also become a go-to destination for people who are considering cosmetic surgery. With so many visits to Turkey for this purpose, it’s impossible not to wonder about safety. This is especially the case with the reports of plastic surgery-related deaths.

Plastic and weight-loss surgery deaths in Turkey

The Irish Independent reports people in Ireland have been warned about the risks of traveling to Turkey to undergo cosmetic and weight-loss procedures after a growing number of people with complications. They also reported a story about a young mother in her 30s who lost her life following a bariatric procedure in Turkey.

For that reason, the Department of Former Affairs said they’re aware of cases where people experienced complications after procedures in Turkey, and a number of them have died. They issued a warning advising people who are considering traveling to Turkey for this purpose to get informed about all the risks and benefits and to discuss their plans with a healthcare provider.

The young mother from Ireland isn’t the only one who lost her life while undergoing a procedure in Turkey. Back in September 2022, Metro from the U.K. reported the death of a 25-year-old man during weight-loss surgery in Turkey. The patient died due to internal bleeding at the site of the operation.

The problem with complications and death cases following procedures in Turkey became so severe that the U.K. government issued a warning. According to their statement , 22 British nationals died in Turkey in January 2019 following medical tourism visits.

Brits and Irish patients aren’t the only ones with these unfortunate scenarios. In August 2022, Sveriges Radio ( Swedish Radio ) published a story about a woman from Sweden who died over two years ago after plastic surgery in Turkey. During all this time, her family waited to hear from doctors in Turkey about what exactly happened to cause her death. Forensic experts from Turkey concluded the patient died due to pneumonia and complications. She died one week after her procedure. Doctors explained the complications that caused her death, but the procedure itself was performed in accordance with medical safety rules. However, experts in Sweden find the report suspicious and believe the exact cause of death is still unclear.

Back in 2021, BBC published news about a woman from Dartford, Kent, who died in Turkey during a liposuction procedure. The autopsy revealed the patient had a perforated bowel, and her death resulted from peritonitis with multiple organ failure as a complication of the surgery.

Plastic surgery-related deaths as a consequence of medical tourism to Turkey aren’t a new or sudden problem. As a reminder, in August 2018, The Guardian reported a story about a death of a 29-year-old woman who went to Turkey to get a Brazilian butt lift. She died on the operating table. Doctors issued warning about this procedure and also encouraged people to be more careful when considering going abroad for plastic surgery.

Why is Turkey a popular plastic surgery destination?

Turkey has become a go-to place for cosmetic surgery purposes. This popularity didn’t happen randomly. It could be a result of affordable prices, visa-free entry, and short flight distances from different parts of Europe, Asia, and North Africa, according to the Middle East Eye .

Money is the biggest factor that makes Turkey stand out as a haven for plastic surgery. Most clinics offer lucrative deals. They usually don’t offer surgery alone but a package deal that includes luxury accommodation, flight, and even tours around cities such as Istanbul. Everything is arranged for the patient. They just need to show up. This may seem attractive to someone, especially since they get to combine plastic surgery with a vacation in Turkey.

While the most important, price isn’t the only factor that makes Turkey so appealing. Speed of treatment also plays a role. Patients also get access to procedures that they wouldn’t receive in their native countries. A good example is weight-loss surgery, which is only performed in cases when patients meet eligibility criteria.

Plastic surgery tourism risks

Even though it may seem convenient to travel abroad and undergo a cosmetic procedure that costs a lot more in your native country, this endeavor comes with certain risks.

Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Global Open published a paper that revolved around cost analysis and patient perception regarding plastic surgery tourism. The paper raised serious concerns about the lack of regulation in cosmetic surgery tourism and the absence of patient follow-up abroad. Researchers also found that one psychiatric patient was allowed to undergo multiple plastic surgery procedures abroad simultaneously. That indicates a lack of safe preoperative screening and also points to overlooking the ethical considerations.

Vice published a piece about the popularity of plastic surgeries in Turkey and also shed some light on safety. The website also emphasizes that complications following the procedures may be in part due to a lack of regulation . Medical tourism isn’t strictly regulated, which becomes an even bigger problem when we take into account that Turkey’s medical tourism industry relies mainly on word-of-mouth marketing. Their biggest strategy is the use of social media, where people share their experiences so others want to get the same results.

Should people get plastic surgery in Turkey?

Thousands of people undergo plastic surgery in Turkey every year. Some of them experience complications that lead to death. As seen throughout this post, in the U.K. and Ireland, people have been warned to be careful if they’re considering getting cosmetic procedures in Turkey.

Whether someone should get plastic surgery in Turkey or not is a personal decision. However, before making a decision, it is important to consult a healthcare provider. The doctor will inform a patient about the safety of the procedure itself and educate them about the risks and potential benefits of plastic surgery tourism.

It is also important to do thorough research and choose the clinic wisely. The biggest problem is that people often go for low prices, which leads to a problem. It is important to put safety and expertise first.

Over the years, more than 20 people from the United Kingdom died following plastic surgery in Turkey. People from other countries, such as Ireland and Sweden, have also lost lives after cosmetic procedures there. Medical tourism is quite popular, especially for plastic surgery purposes. However, this industry isn’t overly regulated, which raises the likelihood of risks and complications. People considering plastic surgery in Turkey or other places abroad need to be careful and make sure to consult their doctor first.
