Air India Partnerships & Alliances

Air India, represented by the IATA code AI, is a well-established member of the Star Alliance. This membership represents a pivotal point in the airline's history. Air India officially joined the Star Alliance on July 11, 2014, marking its ascent into the league of the world's largest airline alliance, comprised of 26 member airlines from around the globe.

The Star Alliance membership has notably broadened Air India's horizons, granting their passengers access to an expansive network of over 1,300 destinations in more than 195 countries. This strategic alliance has allowed Air India to provide seamless, more comfortable travel experiences with simplified transfer processes, frequent flyer benefits, and access to over 1,000 airport lounges worldwide.

Furthermore, Air India has multiple codeshare agreements with various international airlines, bolstering its global connectivity. These codeshare agreements enable the airline to sell seats on flights operated by its partner airlines, under its own name. Such agreements are in place with airlines such as Air Canada, Lufthansa, Swiss International Air Lines, and United Airlines, among others, which are also part of the Star Alliance. This facilitates a better integrated network, enhancing travel convenience for passengers.

Outside the realm of airline alliances, Air India maintains various partnerships of note. These include agreements with companies like Amadeus, a global distribution system provider, enhancing the booking experience for customers. There are also partnerships with corporations like Air Mauritius, enabling seamless connections to various exotic destinations in the Indian Ocean region.

Air India's alliances and partnerships have significantly contributed to its global reach and service offerings. The network and seamless travel experience enabled by the Star Alliance, the numerous codeshare agreements, and various other partnerships collectively enhance the value proposition for Air India's customers, making it a globally competitive airline.

Consistent with the other major airline alliances, Star Alliance does not host an individual frequent flyer program.

To achieve Star Alliance status, members must first accrue status through their respective partner airline of choice. Once this is achieved, an equivalent Star Alliance tier status is issued (see below).

Miles earned through multiple airline programs cannot be transferred or combined to reach the designation for Star Alliance status.

With that being said, passengers traveling on eligible flights operated by Star Alliance member airlines will accrue miles or points, which can be redeemed across the entire Star Alliance network.

Status Levels

Star Alliance lounge in Rome FCO Airport

Essentially, Star Alliance status levels aim to translate elite status benefits across partner airlines. For example, if you fly on United Airlines and have the equivalent of Star Alliance Gold, you should be able to get perks such as extra baggage when flying on Lufthansa or any other Star Alliance partner.

Star Alliance Silver

When your tier status is equivalent to Star Alliance Silver, you may take advantage of the following benefits, no matter which Star Alliance airline you are flying or cabin class you’re assigned.

Priority on Waitlists and When on Standby (Where Offered)

  • This allows those with status to move ahead of other flyers without status on reservation and standby lists, making it more likely to be granted a seat on the flight in question, except when flying on an award ticket.

Star Alliance Gold

When your respective tier status is equivalent to Star Alliance Gold, you may take advantage of the following benefits, no matter which Star Alliance airline you are flying or cabin class you’re assigned.

Access to Priority Check-In Counters

  • This can significantly expedite the time spent in line or at the airport ticket counter. Just look for the Star Alliance Gold sign.

Access to Priority Boarding

  • Star Alliance Gold members board along with First and Business Class passengers (where offered).

Extra Baggage Allowance*

  • Using the weight concept, Star Alliance Gold members are eligible for an additional 44 pounds (20 kg)  baggage weight.
  • Using the piece concept, Star Alliance Gold members are eligible for 1 extra piece of luggage .

* Exclusions apply, including intra-Europe Light fares from Lufthansa, Austrian, and SWISS; Check&Go fares from Brussels Airlines, and Go light fares from SAS. Also, Air New Zealand’s Seat fares are ineligible for extra baggage allowance.

Priority Baggage Handling

  • This ensures Star Alliance Gold member baggage is among the first on the belt from the aircraft to the carousel when traveling on any cabin on any eligible Star Alliance flight.

Access to Over 1,000 Airport Lounges (When You Fly on a Member Airline Flight)*

  • This includes premium first class, business, and frequent flyer lounges, regardless of service class flown at the time of travel , for you and 1 guest traveling on the same flight.

* Exceptions apply.

Access to Priority Security Lanes (at Select Airports, for Select Carriers)

  • Star Alliance Gold Track can significantly decrease security wait times.
  • Restrictions and local agreements can significantly change this benefit. More information is available here .

Access to Priority Immigration Lanes (at Select Airports, for Select Carriers)

  • Star Alliance Gold Track can significantly decrease immigration and customs wait times.

Air India Now Connects to 26 US Cities through Interline Partnership with Alaska Airlines

Indian immigrants from RTP, Atlanta, Detroit, Dallas, Houston, Los Angeles, and Seattle have been vocal about their demand for nonstop air connectivity to India. The day does not seem to be far given the fast pace of Air India’s fleet modernization, inflight service overhaul, and network expansion. However, until then, there is an interim relief – the interline partnership between Air India and Alaska Airlines.

Recently, Air India inked an interline agreement with Alaska Airlines, in addition to ramping up the frequency of its nonstop flights to USA from India . This partnership facilitates Air India’s expansion in the US beyond the five major points: New York JFK, Newark EWR, Chicago ORD, Washington DC, and San Francisco. Alaska Airlines’ vast domestic network across the US is now accessible to Air India’s passengers with single tickets from India.

Air India destinations USA, Air India USA network, Alaska Air India partnership

PC: Air India

Two airlines, who are interline partners, allow each other to access their respective network, thereby enabling passengers to book single-ticket travel on one-stop connecting flights. Two or three interline partners provide hassle-free connection, stress-free travel, and through checked baggage transfer from one point to the other in their joint network.

With this interline agreement, Air India now has seamless access to more 26 US destinations in Alaska Airlines’ network . Thus, passengers of Air India flights can enjoy seamless connections for their onward travel to those 26 points across USA, including Atlanta, Boston, Tampa, Los Angeles, Austin, Houston, Dallas, and Seattle. There is no need to recheck-in bags for connections on Alaska Airlines flights.

The added advantage of the Alaska-Air India interline partnership is that Alaska Airlines honors Air India’s generous check-in baggage allowance . Air India’s checked baggage policy for international flights applies to connecting itineraries across the United States. There are United-Air India interline flights from Seattle, Dallas, Los Angeles, and Atlanta. But United Airlines’ single-checked-bag policy applies to its interline flights with Air India.

Travelers from 26 cities in the US and 6 cities in Mexico can connect on Air India flights to India through San Francisco in the West Coast. They can experience the brand new service on Air India flights from San Francisco to India . B777-200LRs (leased from Delta) with Premium Economy offer cozy seating, generous legroom, soothing interior, and modern inflight entertainment system on SFO to Mumbai, Delhi, and BLR routes.

About Air India

Founded by the legendary JRD Tata, Air India pioneered India’s aviation sector. Since its first flight on October 15, 1932, Air India has built an extensive domestic network with non-stop flights to cities around the world, across the USA, Canada, UK, Europe, Far-East, South-East Asia, Australia, and the Gulf. After 69 years as a government-owned enterprise, Air India and Air India Express were welcomed back into the Tata group in January 2022.

Air India is navigating through a major five-year transformation roadmap under the aegis of Vihaan.AI, with an ambition to become a world class airline with an Indian heart. The first phase of this transformation, the taxi phase was recently concluded, and focused on fixing the basics. These included bringing back to service many long grounded aircraft, addition of talent across flying and ground functions, rapid upgradation of technology and strengthening of customer care initiatives amongst others.

Air India deepens partnership with Amadeus, enhancing travel choices and experiences for passengers in India and worldwide.

Air India has embarked on a transformative journey by extending multi-year agreements with Global Distribution Systems (GDS) partners, namely Amadeus, Sabre, and Travelport.

These groundbreaking partnerships are set to revolutionize the accessibility of Air India’s seat inventory and fares for travel agents, resellers, and corporations across the globe.

One of the most exciting aspects of these agreements is the incorporation of New Distribution Capability (NDC) products, designed to provide travelers with an unparalleled experience. These offerings include personalized pricing, attractive fare bundles, and a fresh array of ancillary services.

Notably, the partnership with Travelport has evolved to include the distribution and servicing of NDC content, enabling the upselling of Air India’s branded and ancillary products. Additionally, Air India’s collaborations with Amadeus and Sabre now encompass domestic content as well as NDC distribution and servicing.

This partnership is all set to redefine the landscape of travel. Local travel will become more accessible, and travelers can look forward to enriched content and enticing upsell options, enhancing their overall experience.

The integration of Air India’s NDC content into the Amadeus Travel Platform, slated for launch in 2024, is another exciting development. This integration will provide the travel community with a broader spectrum of choices, increased flexibility, and enhanced retailing options.

Nipun Aggarwal, Chief Commercial & Transformation Officer at Air India, expressed his excitement, stating, “India is one of the fastest-growing aviation markets globally, and at Air India, we’re committed to elevating the Air India experience for our passengers. Our partnership with Amadeus is a vital part of this journey, enabling us to showcase our products on a global scale and access new markets.”

Javier Laforgue, Executive Vice President of the Travel Unit & Managing Director for Asia Pacific at Amadeus, also shared his enthusiasm for this collaboration. He declared, “This is an exciting time for Air India, and we are delighted to be part of it. This strengthened partnership will allow us to distribute Air India’s offerings to the world’s largest community of travel sellers. It’s a significant milestone in our distribution strategy and retailing journey with the airline.”

Air India’s transformation journey has been nothing short of remarkable, with the Tata Group’s acquisition leading to the launch of Vihaan.AI, a historic program aimed at revamping operations, products, and services. The airline has placed substantial orders for new narrowbody and widebody aircraft, committed to overhauling its existing widebody fleet, and recently unveiled a brand new global identity.

Moscow plans measures to woo tourists, Foreign Tourist Card in the offing

Moscow, Russia

To woo tourists from across the world, the Moscow City Tourism Committee is taking several measures and to address payment-related issues the Russian government is planning to come out with a virtual ‘Foreign Tourist Card’, that will enable cashless payments for various services.

During the Covid pandemic, the tourist flow to Moscow had dropped significantly. However, the number of Indian tourists visiting Moscow is slowly witnessing an uptrend and with tourist-friendly measures like e-visa, this number is likely to grow in the coming months.

“We are still on our way to restore the flow of Indian tourists in Moscow like it used to be before the pandemic. Before the pandemic, there was very steady growth like 12-15 per cent on a y-o-y basis,” said Bulat Nurmukhanov, Head of International Cooperation Division of Moscow City Tourism Committee.

Travelling to Moscow has now become easier as tourists from India and 54 other countries can apply for an electronic visa to enter Russia from August 1, 2023.

Moreover, initiatives like the Foreign Tourist Card will help address payment-related issues, after the departure of MasterCard and Visa from the Russian market, Bulat said.

“There is an initiative by the Federal Government of Russia to develop a ‘Foreign Tourist Card’. The initiative is under process, and some legislative documents have been amended in order to make this card possible.

“The idea behind this card is that a person back home in India can remotely apply for this card and then he/she can transfer money from the personal bank account to this bank account,” Bulat added.

This will be a virtual card and this will be issued to the person back home. This card will address the payment-related issues of foreign tourists in Moscow.

To give more travel options to tourists, in March this year, Russian flag carrier Aeroflot increased the frequency of its flight services on the Delhi-Moscow route to seven times a week against four weekly services earlier.

India and Russia “in principle” agreed to revise their bilateral air services agreement earlier this month, allowing Russian carriers to operate up to 64 flights per week from 52 to India.

Russian carriers are allowed to operate these flights to six Indian cities, Delhi, Mumbai, Goa, Kolkata, Amritsar and Ahmedabad.

“We are really looking forward to the Indian Airlines to restore their flight connections to Moscow. Right now only Aeroflot is operating flights between Delhi and Goa. However, there are some other options available from Dubai to Moscow,” Bulat said.

In a bid to tackle the language barrier that makes arriving in and navigating in a new country quite intimidating, there are seven tourist centres across Moscow. It also has a call centre for foreign tourists in case they need any help, Bulat said.

“We are working on translating the city navigation into English. Our businesses are really active and quick to respond to what the market requires,” Bulat added.

From the capital to Siberia 30 Indian travel companies visited Moscow and Tyumen

Delhi, India (NewsVoir) • Representatives of 30 Indian travel companies visited Moscow to learn about a new tourism project • Russian holidays: From the capital of Russia to the capital of Siberia” and establish business contacts with representatives of the Russian tourism industry The project “Russian holidays: From the capital of Russia to the capital of Siberia” was presented at a B2B session organized jointly by the Moscow City Tourism Committee and Aeroflot on 31st August 2023. As part of the project, Indian travelers will have the opportunity to discover the beautiful sights of Moscow and the mysteries of Siberia, explore the Siberian capital, Tyumen, soak in thermal springs, and try local cooking. Members of the Indian delegation participated in over 800 negotiations that took place between companies, thus significantly expanding the number of potential service providers and the range of options available for Indian tourists. Evgeny Kozlov, Chairman of the Moscow City Tourism Committee said, “Meetings like this enable us to tell our colleagues from abroad about tourism products and introduce Indian travel companies to what the capital has to offer. Indian tour operators traditionally highlight the developed hotel and exhibition center infrastructure of the Russian capital, and consider it important that Moscow tourism operators are familiar with the tastes of Indian tourists and the specific demands of the Indian market. I am confident that the strengthening and development of cooperation between travel companies in our countries can help increase the number of Indian tourists who discover Moscow and other Russian cities. This is a fine opportunity to combine two regions that offer a wealth of sights and activities.” The representatives from Indian tourism companies expressed that their visit had opened up new avenues for bringing more Indian tourists to Russia. They expressed confidence that the number of Indian tourists would steadily increase, especially with the assistance of the new simplified visa regime. Jay Saraogi, Director of HolidayTripster said, “Until recently it was expensive and took a long time to get a Russian visa. But now our tourists can get a visa in 4 days and stay in Russia for 16 days. In the past, we worked with a small group of Russian tourism operators. In the capital, we were able to extend our contact networks and I am now sure that, whatever the client’s request, I can find a suitable tour.” Mahid Mangwani, Director of TravelCanvas stated, “We have been doing business in Russia since 2016. I always recommend my clients to visit Moscow – It has great infrastructure, spectacular buildings, a highly developed and convenient public transport system, clean roads, and high standards of driving. And I am glad that now Indian tourists will be able to learn more about both Moscow and Siberia. I am sure that these destinations will be popular with our tourists.” Indian tourism operators pointed out several advantages of Moscow as a destination, including its high standards of hospitality and safety, one of the world's most beautiful metro systems, a diverse cultural scene, vibrant nightlife, and delicious cuisine. Pankaj Sharma, Branch Manager at Akbar Group said, “Since food holds significant importance for Indian tourists when traveling abroad, it's worth noting that Moscow boasts a wide array of Indian restaurants that serve authentic cuisine. I highly recommend our tourists to consider visiting Russia for this reason.” Moscow provides visitors with numerous opportunities for cultural tourism and the chance to enjoy nature as well. The capital has over 10,000 theatres, museums, libraries, parks, cinemas and concert halls. In the last 10 years, around 900 parks and green spaces have been modernized. The city also has a whopping 18,500 cafes and catering establishments, including Indian restaurants. For those seeking cityscape views, there are several options in Moscow, including riding the Moscow cable car, visiting the observation decks of skyscrapers, exploring the hanging bridge at Zaryadye Park, and checking out viewpoints in the city center and other areas of the capital.
