The ultimate Switzerland travel guide: everything you need to know

Switzerland is arguably one of the most stunning countries in Europe . With dramatic alpine scenery, heartwarming local food, historic towns, and world-famous cities , Switzerland has something for everyone.

No matter where you go or what you are willing to do in Switzerland, you are bound to find gorgeous natural beauty, delicious chocolate and cheese, and efficient, easy-to-use public transport.

Switzerland is a welcoming country where the locals are happy and healthy. The country has maintained a neutral position in global affairs throughout history. As a result, peace, prosperity, and innovation thrive all throughout the country.

With this Switzerland travel guide, we will give an overview of the country and highlight some things you may need to know before traveling here.

In this Switzerland travel guide you can find:

  • When to visit Switzerland

How long to go?

  • Where to go in Switzerland?
  • Brief summary of Swiss history
  • Budget travel recommendations
  • Where to stay
  • Worldpackers work exchanges in Switzerland
  • What to eat
  • How to get around
  • The best things to do in Switzerland

Now let’s get into all the details about your trip to Switzerland. Read on to learn about general trip planning advice, how to visit the country on a budget , examples of epic Worldpackers work exchanges, and more.

Why visit Switzerland?

Switzerland is a stunning country in Central Europe. It is safe, solo traveler-friendly , and incredibly scenic.

It doesn't matter what kind of travelers you are, you sure can find something that suits you: Adventurous travelers can ski or snowboard in the Alps, or test their limits with adrenaline-pumping activities in Interlaken. Those more interested in art and history can tour the castles, museums, and art galleries in cities like Basel or Geneva.

Public transport is very well-maintained and easy to follow , and many locals speak English as well. So if you ever get lost or have a hard time finding a place you want to go, it's easy to get back on track.

Get ready to explore the natural beauty of Switzerland!

When to go?

There is no bad time to visit Switzerland ! It just depends on what you are looking for during your trip.

Many people flock to Switzerland to ski or snowboard in the Alps. If you’re looking for a holiday full of winter sports, then, of course, winter is the best time to go.

Between November and February, the snow season is at its peak . Skiing and snowboarding are incredible, and all of Switzerland looks like a winter wonderland.

If you’re looking for more outdoorsy activities like hiking, camping, waterfall rappelling, skydiving, whitewater rafting, mountain biking, or just some good old-fashioned sightseeing , you may want warmer weather.

Summer in Switzerland is stunning. The sun shines and the temperatures are warm between June and September . However, this is peak holiday season for Europeans, so many attractions are crowded. Flight prices also tend to go up.

The shoulder seasons of spring (March - May) or Autumn (September - November) are safe bets for visiting Switzerland. The prices of transport, tours, and accommodation drop, but the weather will still be pleasant.

So those wondering, “What is the best month to go to Switzerland?”, decide whether you want a ski holiday, a summer holiday, or a more affordable shoulder season holiday.

Switzerland is stunning in winter!

You can never spend enough time exploring Switzerland. As is the case with almost every country in the world, more time is better. The country isn’t that big, but there is so much to see and do, especially if you love adventure activities in nature.

If you only have 3-5 days to spare for your travels, I recommend picking one city to explore, such as Basel, Geneva, or Zurich . Spend a couple of days in the city, with maybe a day trip into nature or a day trip to a smaller local village.

Definitely spend at least one day in the Swiss Alps , which is arguably the most beautiful spot in the country.

Interlaken is a great tourist town to visit for exploring the Alps. From Interlaken, you can ski, snowboard, bike, hike, skydive, and more.

If you have more than a few weeks to spare, you can do a Worldpackers work exchange . This will allow you to work for accommodation, stretch your money out longer, and spend more time enjoying the country. If you have a month or more, you can really get a feel for the landscape and culture of Switzerland!

So to answer the question: “How many days is enough for Switzerland?”, I would say 7 days is ideal to start out with . One week is an amazing time frame for an introduction to Switzerland, as it will give you the chance to explore one or two cities, and see the Alps.

Where to go?

There are so many amazing places to visit in Switzerland. Here is a quick overview of the best places to visit during your trip.

Basel: A city on the Rhine River in northern Switzerland near France and Germany. Often referred to as the Cultural Capital of the country.

Geneva: A city full of history, diplomacy, and natural beauty. Explore Lake Geneva, one of Europe’s oldest Old Towns, and see the headquarters of the UN.

The Matterhorn: An iconic peak of the Swiss Alps that is popular for hiking and sightseeing.

Bern: The capital city of Switzerland. Full of medieval architecture, fountains, gardens, museums, and unique landmarks.

Zurich: This is Switzerland’s largest city. It’s a popular place to fly into and begin your Switzerland travels. It’s great for shopping, museum-hopping, and taking day trips out into small villages and nature.

Switzerland National Park: A stunning area of natural beauty in eastern Switzerland, perfect for hiking and cross-country skiing.

Interlaken: A holiday resort town near the Alps, nestled between the two stunning lakes of Lake Thun and Lake Brienz. The perfect place to base yourself for adventure activities and skiing/snowboarding in the Alps.

Jungfraujoch: Also known as the “Top of Europe”, this is one of the top places to ski and snowboard in the Alps.

Lucerne: A beautiful, peaceful, historic town on a lake. Lucerne is known for music, art, museums, and its Old Town

There are so many more places to see, but those are some of the most popular places for tourists to see during their visit to Switzerland.

A summary of Swiss history

It is always helpful to know a bit about the local history when you visit any country.

The land that is present-day Switzerland h as been part of numerous different empires, including the Helvetians/Helvetic Celts, various Germanic tribes, and the Roman Empire.

Between the 1200s and the 1500s, the area was united by its ruling families to form the Swiss Confederation. The area remained stable even during the religious upheaval of the Protestant Reformation of the 1500s.

Because Switzerland is sandwiched between so many different cultures, languages, and religions, it quickly maintained a status of neutrality with the Treaty of Westphalia in 1648.

During centuries of conflicts between various religious groups and national groups, Switzerland stayed strong. They created a Federal State in the 1800s, loosely modeled after the US Consitution.

Even through both World Wars in the 1900s, Switzerland remained neutral and relatively unscathed, despite having French, German, and Italian influences within its borders.

The country rapidly developed and industrialized in the 1800s and 1900s, and now it is one of Europe’s most advanced and sophisticated countries . Its citizens have a high quality of life, and the United Nations European Headquarters is even located in Geneva.

The importance of staying neutral in global conflicts and maintaining peace and prosperity is one of the reasons why Switzerland is such an incredible country to visit or to live in.

Budget to travel to Switzerland

Switzerland is a pretty expensive country to visit. But it is possible to travel on a budget if you want.

For those wondering, “How much should I budget for a trip to Switzerland?”, let’s break down some of the average costs. Keep in mind, prices fluctuate based on season and current events. These are just general averages.

Prices will be listed in the local currency, CHF (Swiss Francs) . The conversion of CHF to US Dollars is roughly 1 to 1, so you could read these prices in USD and they would be similar.

Average costs of a:

  • Meal in a restaurant: 10-15 CHF for lunch in a cafe or 20-30 CHF for dinner
  • Beer in a bar or restaurant: 7 CHF
  • Day pass for skiing in the Alps: 60-100 CHF
  • Day tour from the city: 70-100 CHF
  • Museum ticket: 20 CHF
  • Train ride between cities: 20-50 CHF
  • Dorm bed in a hostel: 30 CHF per night
  • Room in a budget hotel: 80-100 CHF per night
  • Room in a luxury hotel: 200 CHF per night or more

So taking all that into account, here is what a daily budget might look like depending on your travel style:

  • Daily backpacker budget: 60-90 CHF
  • Daily mid-range traveler budget: 150-180 CHF
  • Daily luxury traveler budget: 250 CHF or more

Of course, everyone is different and you will have to plan your own travel budget based on your financial situation and your travel style.

Now that you have an idea of what things cost, we can get into more of the specifics about Switzerland travel.

It is possible to see Switzerland on a budget.

Where to stay in Switzerland

Switzerland has accommodation options for every budget.

There are lots of awesome backpacker hostels around the country for those on a budget. Particularly in the big cities of Geneva, Bern, and Zurich, there are some great options. Touristy areas like Interlaken and Lucerne also have lots of hostels.

Hostels are great places to meet other travelers, especially if you’re traveling alone. The hostels in Switzerland are super modern, with great amenities, safe lockers to store your things, and helpful, friendly staff members.

For those with a bit more money to spend, hotels around Switzerland are plentiful. There are also plenty of Airbnbs, Bed and Breakfasts, and Guesthouses for those who want a more cozy, intimate experience .

Those looking to save even more money while traveling in Switzerland can consider a work exchange.

Worldpackers Work Exchanges in Switzerland

Volunteering with Worldpackers is an excellent way to spend your time in Switzerland.

Since you are working in exchange for accommodation, you can save money and get to stay in the country for free! This is huge because Switzerland is not a cheap country to visit.

Not only will you save money on accommodation, but you will also get the opportunity to live and work alongside locals and other travelers. This is an amazing way to meet people, learn new things, and immerse yourself in the culture .

Here are some examples of work exchanges you can do during your stay in Switzerland:

  • Help at an eco-village
  • Volunteer at a co-living space in the mountains
  • Help with marketing and sales in Zurich
  • Help with renovation and carpentry

Make friends with a work exchange in the mountains!

What to eat in Switzerland

Food in Switzerland is heavy and delicious. The most famous foods to try in Switzerland are definitely cheese and chocolate!

Swiss chocolate is world-famous , with Lindt and Toblerone being two of the most well-known brands. With a higher milk content than most other chocolates, Swiss Chocolate is incredibly rich and creamy. There are chocolate factories and chocolate shops all over the country, so definitely indulge!

Swiss cheese is a special type of alpine cheese that has lower acidity and lower salt content than other cheeses. Famous types of Swiss cheese include Emmenthal and Gruyère . You can buy them in any food store in Switzerland. Cheese is served in many forms in Switzerland, the most popular being fondue. Cheese fondue is something you have to try when you travel to Switzerland!

This big pot of melted cheese is served with bread and veggies that you can dip into the cheese. There are amazing restaurants all over the country where you can try traditional cheese fondue.

You have to try cheese fondue!

Besides cheese and chocolate, other must-try dishes in Switzerland include:

  • Papet Vaudois: a warm dish of stewed leeks and potatoes with sausage on top
  • Zopf bread: braided bread often served with jam and fruits
  • Tartiflette: a baked dish of thinly sliced potatoes, bacon, onions, and chees
  • Leckerli: sweet, sticky biscuits with hazelnuts
  • Älpermagronen: A dish similar to macaroni and cheese with onions and potatoes

How to get around in Switzerland?

If you’re wondering how to travel in Switzerland, there are many ways to get around!

Public transport is plentiful here, and all the big cities and many smaller towns are well connected by train and bus .

Flights into Switzerland are easy and cheap from elsewhere in Europe . Zurich and Geneva are travel hubs, as are Bern and Basel. You can easily get a flight here when arriving in Switzerland.

You can take domestic flights within the country , though they are expensive.

Switzerland isn’t that big, so the best way to travel to different cities within the country is by train or bus . For example, a train from Geneva in the west of the country to Zurich in the north is only about 3 hours.

Trains are the fastest and most efficient way to travel between cities . Buses are a bit slower and cheaper. Buses are preferred for shorter journeys between smaller towns.

Renting a car is another option. The roads are easy to drive and well-maintained, though renting a car is still more expensive than public transport.

So for getting around Switzerland, you should be all taken care of by train or bus!

Switzerland has some of the most beautiful train journeys.

Top experiences in switzerland.

Bernese Oberland.  For many visitors, the Bernese Oberland is the highlight of a trip to Switzerland. Towering mountains, alpine meadows, soaring cable cars, historic cogwheel trains, scenic walking trails, quaint villages and hamlets…this is what most people think of, when they think of Switzerland.

Jungfraujoch.  A trip up to Jungfraujoch is one of the most popular things to do in the Bernese Oberland. Stand on one of the highest points in the Swiss Alps, walk through an ice cave, play in the snow, get panoramic views over the Alps, and hike out to Mönchsjochhütte.

Schilthorn.  Schilthorn is one of the highest peaks in the Jungfrau region and it is one of the best places to go for panoramic views of the Swiss Alps. While you are here, enjoy the view as you dine at Piz Gloria, learn a little James Bond history at Bond World, and add on the thrilling Cliff Walk in Birg.

Spend some time in Bern. Enjoy the humble and medieval city of Bern! With its pretty river views, quaint streets, and cozy shops, this city is a delight to wander. Enjoy Bern’s museums, see Einstein's home, and climb to the top of the 13 th century Zytglogge tower to look out over the city.

Lucerne.  Lucerne is a gorgeous Swiss city that sits at the foot of the Alps. The best things to do are to wander the old town, eat, drink, shop, and enjoy the views of the lake.

Mt. Pilatus. Mt. Pilatus is a jagged mountain that overlooks Lucerne. Cable cars and a cogwheel railway whisk visitors to the top, where you can go hiking, ride Switzerland’s longest summer toboggan, and take in the view from a handful of viewpoints.

Zürich.  Zürich, with its colorful old town and handy public transportation network, is a great city to add on to your tour of Switzerland. Wander the picturesque old town, dine on fondue, go shopping, and take a boat tour of Lake Zürich.

Zermatt.  Zermatt is an idyllic mountain village tucked away in the Swiss Alps. The mighty Matterhorn dominates the skyline, creating one of the most unique alpine landscapes in Europe. Explore the hiking trails, journey up higher into the mountains by cable car and train, stroll the scenic streets of Zermatt, and go skiing all year long.

Visit St. Moritz. T his small resort city surrounded by large mountains and gorgeous lakes. Enjoy the city’s fine dining and exquisite shopping, paddle board on Lake St. Moritz, or look down on the city from the top of a mountain.

Lausanne. Sitting on the shore of Lake Geneva is Lausanne, a charming city that is located in French-speaking Switzerland. With a colorful old town and numerous world-class museums, this is a delightful city to add to your tour of Switzerland.

Gruyères.  Located in the idyllic, rolling hills of French-speaking Switzerland sits Gruyères, a picture-perfect medieval town. Cheese, chocolate, and beautiful cobblestoned streets attract visitors all year round.

Geneva. Geneva is a common gateway into Switzerland for many travelers. It’s a large and bustling city, yet ancient architecture, old cathedrals, and cobblestone streets still remain. Explore the city’s old town, sail on Lake Geneva, and savor Swiss fondue at local restaurants.

Visit the Appenzell District. Visit the quaint and historical villages in the Appenzell District, set amongst green pastures and soaring mountains. Here, you will be able to experience traditional Switzerland, taste freshly-made Appenzell cheese, and admire remnants of the Middle Ages.

How Many Days Do You Need in Switzerland?

At minimum, plan on spending 7 days in Switzerland. This gives you just enough time to visit Lucerne, Bern, or Zürich and then spend a few days in the Swiss Alps.

With 10 days in Switzerland, you have enough time to tour Lucerne, Zürich, the Bernese Oberland, and Zermatt.

With even more time, you can add on Lugano, Lausanne, St. Moritz, or spend more time in the Swiss Alps.

If you only have a few days in Switzerland, we recommend visiting Lucerne and day tripping into the Jungfrau region from here.

Best Time to Visit Switzerland

You can visit Switzerland all year round.

The best time to visit, in my opinion, is during the summer months, especially if you want to go hiking. Many of the hiking trails do not open until the end of May or early June, and then close in October, when the snow begins to fall. So, if you are a hiker, the best time to visit is during the summer months.

Summer is peak season, especially in the Bernese Oberland. It will be more crowded and expensive to visit at this time, so you will need to make your hotel reservations far in advance (ideally 4 to 6 months before your visit). But the weather is warm, the flowers are blooming, and the days are long.

If you want to hike the trails and have lower crowds, plan your visit for the end of September to early October.

But Switzerland certainly does not lose its charm during winter months! Swiss cities are filled with Christmas celebrations and markets, and Switzerland has some of the best snow sports in Europe. Meanwhile, the Bernese Oberland is a snow-covered wonderland. Ride the cable cars to Schilthorn and Jungfraujoch for spectacular views, go skiing, and spend the evenings in a cozy hotel with views of the snow-capped mountains.

Most of the trains and cable cars operate year round, although some will close for a short period of time for maintenance, either during the winter, spring, or fall months.

Switzerland on a budget? Yes, it is possible - here’s how

Hiking Switzerland's many paths is one of the best free activities on offer

The alpine nation is infamously expensive and attracts the mega rich year-round - but there are ways to make a trip there affordable.

With stunning scenery, restorative fresh air, unique nature and hearty cuisine, it’s no surprise that Switzerland is one of the most popular destinations in all of Europe. It also consistently tops lists of the most expensive places to travel to not just in Europe but worldwide.

There is a way to visit the mountainous mid-European country without breaking the bank, however.

Euronews Travel has done some digging as well as speaking to experts who know Switzerland inside out to find the best ways to make the most of your trip on a budget.

Why not take in the rolling hills of the Passwang pass on your visit to Switzerland?

It’s wise to plan your Swiss trip in advance

As Michael L. Moore, founder of travel website Countdown to Magic, tells Euronews Travel, “timing is everything.”

The travel expert explains that the time of year you visit Switzerland is almost always where you’ll see the biggest difference in price.

“Avoid the peak summer months when prices soar. Instead, aim for the shoulder seasons of spring and autumn,” Moore says.

“You'll encounter smaller crowds, lower rates on accommodation, and potentially even score deals on airfare. The wildflowers of spring and the blazing autumn foliage make these seasons magic,” he adds.

So much of Switzerland’s appeal is what it has to offer for free. The majestic scenery and hiking routes are all there for the taking and a little planning for necessities such as accommodation or travel can save you a considerable amount of money.

So much of Switzerland is stunning - even places less explored

It’s also a good idea to get off the beaten track, if you can bear to leave popular spots off your itinerary.

“While Interlaken and Zermatt have become iconic Swiss destinations, their popularity comes at a cost,” Moore says.

Instead, he recommends basing yourself in small towns like Thun, where lodging can be significantly less pricey but the alpine vistas surrounding your accommodation will be just as glorious.

Travel expert Fiona Spinks, founder of Following Fiona, agrees.

While Lucerne is an always-popular travel option, there are many alternatives worth a visit

“The key is to seek out Switzerland's hidden gems, those off-the-beaten-path spots that allow you to experience the country's stunning natural beauty and rich culture away from the overpriced tourist traps,” she tells Euronews Travel.

Although everyone dreams of staying in a palatial hotel in the mountains, it’s not realistic for most.

“Stay in hostels or Airbnbs. While Swiss hotels can be pricey, hostels and Airbnb rentals offer much more affordable accommodation options, especially if you're willing to stay a bit outside the major cities,” Spinks advises.

Make the most of your trip while saving money

Transport options in Switzerland are often luxurious and have amazing views - so it’s entirely possible to make the travel itself into a big part - nay, a highlight - of your trip.

“In Switzerland, you can have it all by rail,” Moore tells Euronews Travel.

“The iconic Glacier Express train route serves up unforgettable alpine views from its panoramic windows. Even better - your transit becomes the activity rather than an added expense. Just pack some snacks and drinks to enjoy picnic-style on board,” he recommends.

To make your journey less expensive , we recommend the government-backed Swiss Half-Fare Travel Card which provides 50 per cent off most rail, bus and boat routes country-wide. It costs around €132 and is valid for an entire month, with no limits on usage.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Euronews Travel (@euronewstravel)

That’s a sentiment shared by Spinks, too.

“Put that Swiss Travel Pass to use! Efficient and comfortable trains connect all corners of the country, allowing you to hop from city to village without the expense of a rental car,” she says.

If you’re in Switzerland for the culture as well as the natural wonders, you’ll likely want to visitthe country’s multitude of museums and galleries. While many of them are free or charge a nominal fee, be careful to plan ahead as, frequently, these rates are only available at specific times.

Less traditional forms of entertainment are free at all times, however.

“Open-air concerts, historical sites, and lively markets provide enriching entertainment without costing a franc,” Moore says.

"With smart planning and reasonable expectations, Switzerland can absolutely be experienced while sticking to a budget. Between the low-cost thrills of the alps and the cultural attractions, your wallet and wanderlust will both walk away satisfied."

Spinks is an advocate for free entertainment, too.

“From swimming in crystal-clear lakes to visiting museums on their complimentary admission days to simply wandering through picturesque villages,” she says, “there's no shortage of cost-free experiences.”

If you’re more into relaxation , you could do worse than pay a visit to the Fitnesspark National next to lake Lucerne.

Fitnesspark National on the banks of lake Lucerne provides an afforable spa experience

Artist Dallas Athent, a frequent visitor, tells Euronews Travel, “Oftentimes when people hear about Switzerland, they picture themselves at a luxurious spa amongst the snow, but what people don't know is that some of the best saunas are actually at gyms!”

The venue boasts an indoor-out-door pool, jacuzzi and several sauna rooms with cold plunges and a bucket shower. Even better, a day pass costs around €40 - not bad for such an expensive country.

Athens says a visit to a gym like Fitnesspark is a great way to get involved with the essence of the country, too.

“Not only is it much more affordable than the tourist options, but I feel like I get to really understand Swiss culture by seeing how relaxation and wellness is part of their day-to-day lives,” she says.

Where is Switzerland making tourism more accessible?

You’ll likely have Zurich and Geneva on your list as must sees, but casting your travel net a little wider can save you a large amount of cash.

Lausanne on the banks of Lake Geneva gives perks to tourists which can cut costs.

“When you book a hotel in Lausanne, you will automatically receive the Lausanne Transport card at the reception, which allows you to travel for free with the public transport in the city and to the terraced vineyards Lavaux that are listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site,” Olivia Bosshart from the Lausanne Tourisme board tells Euronews Travel.

The card also gives the opportunity to get reduced prices at some attractions and it’s also worth buying a Lausanne City Pass. You can buy a 1, 2, or 3 day pass and receive free entrance to some places or a discount of at least 20 per cent at others.

Explore Lausanne's beautiful centre on foot - for no cost

The Swiss are famed for their naturally delicious water but, in Lausanne, it doesn’t cost a cent.

“For a refreshing drink, walk to one of the numerous fountains from which you can drink and fill a bottle,” Bosshart says, “These fountains encourage sustainability and show that it’s possible to get free and drinkable water all around the city.”

All museums are free on the first Saturday of the month in Lausanne - including the Olympic museum. The city is inextricably linked to the Games, as it’s home to not just the museum but also the International Olympic Committee headquarters and lakeshore Olympic Park.

Using your travel pass, you can also head to the unique UNESCO listed terrace vineyards of Lavaux. They’re just a short train ride out of the city and a visit can be combined with a hike to see panoramic views of nearby Grandvaux - a world heritage site - and the beautiful village of Lutry.

Lutry, outside Lausanne, is famed for its beautiful countryside vistas

Close to the borders of both France and Germany, you’ll find the melting pot that is Basel. Perhaps best known for the glitzy Art Basel, a famously exclusive - and expensive - art fair, there are still bargains to be had.

Like in Lausanne, the city offers a free BaselCard with every booking at a Basel hotel, hostel, bed and breakfast or apartment.

As well as benefiting from free public transport, it also gives visitors half price access to Basel’s many museums as well as the city’s zoo and theatre.

Basel's historic centre boasts countless sites to see

Basel is very much known as a walkable city and authorities have made the most of this for visitors.

“The best way to explore Basel’s Old Town is on foot, as the many places of interest are close to one another. Five different circular walking tours allow you to discover the hidden nooks and crannies of the Old Town and its history,” Basel’s tourist board tells Euronews.

Tourists frequently recommend taking in the 1,000 year old cathedral, the striking fountain designed by Jean Tinguely and the Botanical garden of the University of Basel.

In the summer, swimming in the Rhine is a free and hugely popular activity. No trip to Basel is complete without a visit to Lange Erlen.

Catch a glimpse of unusual birds like this mandarin duck at Lange Erlen

It’s an animal park with complimentary entry where you can see the likes of fallow deer, lynx, wild cats and wild boar. Children will enjoy the paddocks which house donkeys, ponies, goats, sheep, rabbits and guinea pigs and peacocks while storks and herons also wander freely.

If you’re more of a cycler , Basel is currently offering e-bike hire for a relatively affordable rate of around €20 a day.

With low costs on transport, planning ahead on hotel costs, buying basic groceries in budget supermarkets and not eating out at restaurants for every meal, Switzerland really can be an affordable option.

The most scenic road trip

Hikes: Hiking & trekking

Matterhorn (4,478 a.s.l.) - symbol for switzerland.

The Matterhorn and Switzerland are inseparably linked to each other. The pyramid shaped colossus of a mountain, which is very difficult to climb, is said to be the most-photographed mountain in the world. The Klein-Matterhorn ("Little Matterhorn"), which can be reached via a funicular, lies adjacent to the Matterhorn.

The Rhine Falls

To stand high above Europe's largest waterfall, feeling the roar and vibration of the water over one's entire body - this can be experienced at the Rhine Falls near Schaffhausen. By ship one can reach castles, the Rhine Falls Basin and even the mighty rock in the midst of the waterfall.

On the Top of Europe: A visit to the Jungfraujoch puts a jewel in the crown of any visit to Switzerland.

Château de Chillon

Chillon Castle is located on a rock on the banks of Lake Geneva. The water castle is the most visited historic building in Switzerland. For nearly four centuries Chillon was the residence and profitable toll station of the Counts of Savoy.

Creux du Van

"Creux du Van", a natural rock arena of immense proportions, is located at the border of the cantons of Neuenburg and Vaud. Impressive 160 meter high vertical rock faces surround a four kilometer long and over one kilometer wide valley basin.

Aletsch - the Largest Alpine Glacier

Incredibly immense, incredibly beautiful: the Large Aletsch Glacier is the Alps' mightiest ice flow. And the most popular, for it is easily accessible and is ideally situated for extensive hikes, winter sports and special nature excursions.

Swiss Museum of Transportation

Switzerland’s most visited museum showcases the past, present and future of mobility with interactive and varied exhibits. In addition to the museum, unique attractions found nowhere else in Switzerland, such as the film theatre, planetarium, Swiss Chocolate Adventure and Media World, are just waiting to be discovered.

10,000 years ago, 100 billion cubic metres of rock thundered into the valley. Known as the Flims Rockslide, this event created the Ruinaulta, a canyon-like gorge in the Anterior Rhine Valley that can be reached on foot, over water, by train or by bike.

Excursion tips for easter.

Spring skiing or simply basking in the sun? Discover a number of diverse offers in and around Easter.

14 excursions for Easter

It's Easter and the desire to explore is blossoming. Those who are undecided will find inspiration for a trip on the long Easter weekend below.

Spring in the city

Goodbye to the long winter months – it’s time to welcome the spring. Now it’s time to recharge your batteries, catch the sun’s rays and enjoy the fresh air. Switzerland’s cities are also in full bloom, showcasing spring’s awakening.

City oases in bloom

It is not just nature that awakens in spring – Switzerland’s towns and cities also wake from their winter slumber. Parks and gardens transform the urban centres, invigorating them with life. Roses, tulips and daffodils make this time of year particularly stunning.

Wellness with a clear conscience

Sustainable wellness: As the days start getting shorter, the weather outside gets colder and snow starts to fall, many people are drawn to soothing wellness facilities. However, there is no denying that whirlpool baths, saunas and relaxation in quiet surroundings involve the consumption of a great deal of thermal energy. By taking many steps, both large and small, these Swiss flagship spas show just how important and effective commitment to green principles is for our environment.

Panorama trains delight with large windows, mountain and lake views and other scenic attractions.
