Enjoy afternoon tea in London

Sample over 300-years of history in the simplicity of homemade scones with whipped cream and jam. This deliciously British treat is best enjoyed in the afternoon, complete with a hot cup of Earl Grey, cucumber sandwiches and a tower of sugary delights.

Explore ancient Athens

You don't need to be a historian to appreciate the significance of Athens. Your love affair with the city might begin with goddess Athena’s Parthenon temple and the ruins of Acropolis, but it’s likely to end in a quaint alleyway getting a glimpse at daily life in this ancient capital. The story of Athens continues to unfold.

Catch a flamenco show in Spain

Discover the soul-stirring emotion of a Flamenco show in Spain. This expressive art-form has an intangible cultural heritage recognised by UNESCO, merging song, dance and musical instruments into a performance that has to be experienced at least once. Finish with dinner of paella or tapas to round off your perfect evening.

View the Northern Lights in Iceland

Mother Nature’s wonders come to life with the Aurora Borealis or ‘Northern Lights’. In the frosty landscapes of Iceland, this light display offers viewers a genuine pinch-me moment as vivid colours dance across the night sky.

Spend a night at the opera in Vienna

Hear the talents of traditional opera with the ghosts of Mozart and Strauss in your presence. Though there are more than few places to catch the opera in Vienna, none can compare to the State Opera House (Staatsoper).

Our top 5 things to do in Europe & Britain

There are endless pinch-me moments to be found across the many countries that make up the continent of Europe. But where to even begin? Perhaps a Flamenco show in Spain, afternoon tea in London or a Northern Lights viewing in frosty Iceland? Here are some of the highlights of our Europe and Britain trips that you're sure to love.

Paris, France

The world’s largest gallery and the home of Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa, the Louvre is without rival in the art world and is a must see when in Paris. Allow an entire day to explore its eight departments, not missing the Egyptian antiquities, Islamic art and various halls of sculptures. End your day with sunset by the Louvre Pyramid.

London, England

The British Museum

With some eight million works within its permanent collection, The British Museum is an illustrious European landmark. Admire objects brought back from the voyages of Captain James Cook and walk in the controversial presence of the Parthenon Marbles.

Florence, Italy

Uffizi Gallery

The Tuscan capital is home to Uffizi Gallery, where the brushworks of art’s true masters can be found. Names like Raffaello, Leonardo, and Michelangelo fill Uffizi’s grand pink walls, whilst internal courtyards leading to the Arno River reveal the building’s architectural brilliance.

Best museums in Europe & Britain

When traveling Europe with Trafalgar, museum hopping is one of the best ways to understand the culture and history of the places you visit. You’ll find yourself critiquing ancient art and staring in awe at some of the world’s most prominent works. Here are some of our favorites.

Paella Valenciana

Saffron, snails, butterbeans and bomba rice are just some of the ingredients you might find in traditional Spanish paella. Despite originating from the coastal town of Valencia, Paella Valenciana is a variety without seafood. You'll love sitting back to enjoy a steaming plate over the sounds of Spanish jazz in a lively alfresco restaurant.

Beef Stroganoff

Now a staple dish in many parts of the world, beef stroganoff is best enjoyed in its birthplace in Russia with a vodka in hand. This simple dish of beef strips sauteed in a sour cream sauce offers a heart-warming taste of this country’s culinary heritage.

Bouillabaisse

The Mediterranean city of Marseille is where a French culinary icon can be found and devoured. The fragrant stew of bouillabaisse, commonly served with crusty white bread, boils up the finest local seafood and seasonal vegetables with the flavors of fennel, saffron and cayenne pepper.

Best food in Europe & Britain

Our trips to Europe gravitate around indulgent local mealtimes. With new cuisines and cooking methodologies found at every turn, this continent is simply delicious.

What to pack for Europe

People packing for a tour

With such a large expanse of space to explore, on some days, long journeys are unavoidable. The scenery will provide plenty of visual entertainment, while headphones can be used to listen to some local music or enjoy podcasts about European history, culture and politics when you're not enjoying the storytelling from your Travel Director.

A good book

Exploring Europe is best done at a relaxed pace with ample opportunity to absorb your surroundings. Dedicate a few days to sitting in a park or a cafe, alternating between reading and watching the world go by.

Versatile shoes

Within the space of one outing you may experience all kinds of terrain when in Europe. Pack shoes that can see you walking from an elegant restaurant to a cobbled footpath, with a stroll along the soft grass of a park in between.

A blank journal

With the wealth of inspiration tucked into every corner of Europe, you may find yourself compelled to write down notes or memories. At the very least to share recommendations with friends when you return home.

All climate clothing

No matter the time of year you travel, Europe can deliver a myriad of temperatures. From frosty cities of Scandinavia to the temperate hills of Portugal, layered clothing best suits the varying micro-climates across this continent.

Europe travel faqs, do i need a covid-19 vaccine to join an intrepid trip.

Trips from 1 January 2023 onwards

From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travelers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises).

However, we continue to strongly recommend that all Intrepid travelers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.

Specific proof of testing or vaccination may still be required by your destination or airline. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.

Do you need a visa to travel to Europe?

Whether or not you need a visa to travel to European countries largely depends on the nationality on your passport and whether the country you're traveling to is part of the Schengen Agreement.

This agreement sees 26 European countries offer visa-free travel to nationals from 60 other countries including Australia, the United States, Canada, Japan, and the United Kingdom.

To determine whether the country you're traveling to requires a visa, head to the   Schengen Visa's information website.

What is the internet access like in Europe?

You can easily access the internet in most countries in Europe, generally in capital cities and other major towns. Internet access may be limited in regional locations such as national parks or remote villages in some countries.

Can I use my cell phone in Europe?

You shouldn't have a problem using your cell phone while traveling throughout Europe, however, your international data roaming will need to be activated in order to connect to the internet or send messages (unless you connect to the local wi-fi).

What are the toilets like in Europe?

Modern, flushable toilets are the standard in the majority of European countries.

Can I drink the water in Europe?

Tap water in most European countries is considered safe to drink unless it is otherwise marked.

When should I book a tour in Europe?

There is no 'best time' to travel around Europe as most countries offer plenty to do in every season of the year.

T he most popular time to travel to countries like Greece, Italy, and Croatia is during the summer months (June, July, and August) so you can make the most of each country's respective beaches and warm weather.

C ountries such as Iceland, Norway, and Sweden are known for their snowy landscapes and northern lights sightings during Winter (December, January, and February).

How much does a Europe tour cost?

A tour in Europe can vary depending on the countries you want to visit, the style of tour, and how long you want to go for but you can expect to pay anywhere between USD$1,000 to USD$5,000, with most tours around USD$2,500.

Is tipping common in Europe?

Tipping isn't as prevalent in Europe as it is in some other countries and definitely isn't expected, but if you like the quality of service you've been given at hotels, restaurants etc then a tip is always appreciated.

Are credit cards widely accepted in Europe?

While credit cards are accepted in all European countries (especially in capital cities and other larger cities), smaller cafes or local run businesses may not have EFTPOS machines so it's always best to carry around a little cash to cover these expenses.

What is ATM access like in Europe?

You should have no problem finding ATMs in most European cities.

What currency will I need on a Europe tour?

The official currency of Europe is the Euro (€), however, only 19 of the 28 countries in the European Union use this. Countries that still use their own currency include Norway, Switzerland, Belarus, Croatia, Denmark, and Sweden.

Is Europe safe for LGBTQIA+ travelers?

Europe is considered a reasonably safe continent for LGBTQIA+ travelers with plenty of countries openly accepting, welcoming, and embracing the community.

This is evident in large capital cities such as Paris, Berlin, Madrid, and Vienna.

Some countries still hold traditional religious beliefs such as Belarus and Poland so a degree of caution should be taken when travelling around cities and remote regions in those countries.

Will I need a socket adapter for Europe?

If you plan on traveling to multiple countries throughout Europe then purchasing an all-in-one, worldwide adapter is the safest way to go.

I f you don't want to do that, your safest bet is to buy an adapter that uses C or E/F-type plugs as most European countries recognize this.

Do I need to purchase travel insurance before traveling?

Absolutely. All passengers traveling with Intrepid are required to purchase travel insurance before the start of their trip. Your travel insurance details will be recorded by your leader on the first day of the trip. Due to the varying nature, availability and cost of health care around the world, travel insurance is very much an essential and necessary part of every journey.

For more information on insurance, please go to: Travel Insurance

Are Intrepid trips accessible for travelers with disabilities?

We are always happy to talk to travelers with disabilities and see if we can help guide them toward the most suitable itinerary for their needs and, where possible, make reasonable adjustments to our itineraries.

Europe - Tour Package Highlights and Trip Insights

With so much to see, do, eat and buy, planning a Europe tour is no easy feat. There are, of course, the typical sightseeing musts: Paris’ Louvre, London’s Tower Bridge, and Rome’s Colosseum. Even Europe’s most frequent visitors will always find something new to discover. Read on for our top Europe tour highlights and Europe trip insights.

Europe Tour Package Highlights

  • Go back in time and explore the ruins of ancient civilizations in Italy and Greece
  • Snack on cheese and wine (or escargot, if you’re feeling adventurous) in the Champ de Mars, beneath the Eiffel Tower
  • Ride a bicycle through the townhouse-lined streets of Amsterdam before touring the canals by boat
  • Listen to the romantic songs of the gondoliers as you cruise through the canals of Venice
  • Indulge in an authentic Belgian waffle, drowned in chocolate
  • Enjoy an ice-cold beer from a beer stein at Oktoberfest in Germany
  • Hike from village to village in Italy’s Cinque Terre
  • Get lost between the shelves of some of the world’s most beautiful libraries, like those at Trinity College (Dublin, Ireland), Mafra Palace (Mafra, Portugal), and the Clementinum Baroque Library Hall (Prague, Czech Republic)
  • Join a Europe tour that goes through many of Europe's travel highlights in countries such as Spain , France , Italy , Netherlands and Scandinavia .

Europe Trip Insights

  • Traveling by rail is one of the easiest (and sometimes cheapest) ways to get around Europe, especially if you plan to travel for a couple of weeks (or longer). Investigate rail passes before you visit, particularly ones that can be used between countries. Interrail and Eurail are very popular among travelers.
  • Don’t skip the “touristy” destinations. Everyone travels differently, but the most popular European highlights are popular for a reason. Brave the crowds and be sure to stop by those more cliché sites - you’ll be glad you did.
  • Try not to over prepare! One of the great benefits of visiting Europe is that it’s incredibly easy to travel between towns and countries. Allow yourself some flexibility to open yourself up to new adventures (and avoid travel burnout). If you've booked a Europe tour package with accommodation, activities, guides etc. get ready to indulge and relax - you are up for a Europe trip of a lifetime.
  • Chances are you don’t speak 23 different languages, so be prepared before you travel. Avoid carrying around heavy guide books by downloading a translation app on your phone.
  • Note that not all European countries use the Euro, including the United Kingdom , Denmark and Hungary (among others). Do your research beforehand and be ready to juggle different currencies if you’re planning an extensive trip.
  • Travelling on a budget? Check our last minute holiday and travel deals to Europe . Also, consider looking for accommodation outside the city centre. Most large European cities are very well connected by public transportation, meaning all your bucket list sites are just a quick (and often inexpensive) bus, train, or metro ride away.

Tours in Europe - Questions and Answers

You can spend a couple of months exploring Europe and still feel like you have not seen everything. Generally speaking, a two-week Europe trip should be just enough if you are looking to cover its major highlights. However, if you want a comprehensive travel experience within this duration, it is better that you focus on a region or a few countries rather than traveling all over the continent.

Choose a single country or schedule your trip around a handful of cities in different countries. While larger European cities may require three to four days to explore, you can get around smaller destinations in a day or two. Planning your trip around a particular region will cut down your travel time and save your time in transit.

If you are planning to visit multiple countries, you should prepare a tentative list of destinations you are interested in. If it is your first trip, stick to major cities and cultural centers for the sake of simplicity and convenience. Also, be flexible and optimize your travel time and budget. Be open to changing your itinerary depending on schedules and ticket prices.

There are dozens of insurance companies offering travel insurance, which can make it difficult for you to choose the right one.

There are a number of things that you should be aware of while purchasing travel insurance. If it is comprehensive medical insurance plans that you are interested in, make sure to find out what all the plan covers. If you are concerned about certain scenarios, then check out customizable travel insurance policies and find out if the provider can cover you for those situations. You also need to determine if there are reasonable coverage limits. Check deductibles and compensation limits in the insurance policy for this.

While insurance is important, it is mostly a safeguard against emergencies. If you are on a budget, you can go with the second- or even third-best option and prioritize getting your money’s worth instead of purchasing the most comprehensive coverage.

Europe has swathes of spectacular landscapes, a rich history, and vibrant cultures. Therefore, deciding on the best travel destinations on the continent can be difficult. However, you can narrow down on highlights by choosing one overarching theme for your trip.

If you are looking forward to immersing yourself in art and history, then Italy, Spain , and France should be on the top of your list. Head for Switzerland , Norway , or Croatia if nature is what you love the most. For beaches and water sports, you will be hard-pressed to find better destinations than Greece , Portugal , and Montenegro.

Having said that, you can also diversify your itinerary by mixing and matching different elements of the same country. Italy  tops the charts not just for its medieval monuments and Renaissance art but also for coastal scenery and sun-soaked beaches. Similarly, Spain is a foodie paradise as much as it is an architectural hotspot.

Bus services like FlixBus and BusAbout offer a convenient means of transport if you wish to move from one city to another within the same country. Although these services do travel between countries, they might not be the best choice due to a longer travel time.

Budget airlines are another great way to get around Europe’s major cities, especially when you want to cut down on travel time between two countries. Keep an eye out and you might be able to snag tickets at unbelievable rates. Services like Skyscanner can be of help. Some of the largest budget airlines in the continent are Ryanair , WizzAir , Eurowings , and EasyJet .

Ridesharing services are a godsend for those wishing to immerse themselves in local culture as they offer you the chance to catch a ride with locals along the way. BlaBlaCar is the largest one. The only downside is that it is not always as easy to book a rideshare service as it is to catch a bus or hop on a budget flight.

The USA is one of the 63 countries whose citizens enjoy visa-free entry into the EU Schengen zone along with the UK and associated states like Iceland , Liechtenstein, Norway, and Switzerland.

This means that if you are an American citizen with a valid US passport and want to travel to Europe for a limited amount of time for tourism or business purpose, you can do so anytime you want to. However, if you have more long-term plans (say, you intend to get employed, study, or simply live in Europe for an extended period of time), you will need to apply for a visa. The type of your visa and required documentation depend on your goals.

Update for 2022: EU is set to launch ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorization System) by the end of this year. It is similar to ESTA and is supposed to help simplify travel procedures and decrease security risks. All travelers allowed to travel to the EU and associated states visa-free will require an ETIAS authorization. This also includes US citizens.

If your country has a visa-free agreement with the EU, you are allowed to spend up to 90 days within a period of 180 days. Keep in mind that the countdown starts on the date of your entry and ends on the date of your exit. So, for example, if you fly into an EU country on the first of the month and exit on the 15th, it will count as a 15-day stay.

There are 63 countries in the world that have a visa-waiver agreement with the EU . If your country is part of this agreement, you can travel to Europe visa-free. You do, however, need to show the following to be allowed into the Schengen Zone and associated states.

  • A valid passport: Your passport should have a validity of at least 3 months at the time of your entry into Schengen and be less than ten years old.
  • Purpose of entry: In addition to your passport, you also require documents that prove that you are there for tourism purposes. These documents can include invoices for hotel reservations and booked tours.
  • Proof of financial means: You also need to carry documents proving that you can support yourself during your stay in the region.

As long as you have got all three, all you need is a plane ticket to your chosen destination.

Before You Go

  • To make it easier to replace your passport if it’s lost or stolen, in addition to your passport, take a photocopy of your passport information page (keeping it separate from your actual passport).
  • Carry only a limited amount of cash, just enough for gratuities and incidental purchases. Major credit cards are widely accepted and can be replaced if lost or stolen.
  • Always lock your hotel room door (including patio and balcony door on any level of the building) and use the peephole before opening the door.
  • Store your valuables (such as cash, credit cards and airline tickets) in the hotel’s in-room safe or front desk safety deposit box.
  • If you must carry valuables on your person, do so in a pouch or money belt concealed under your clothing. Purses and backpacks can be easy targets for thieves.

The 15 Best Tour Operators in 2022

These are the companies Travel + Leisure readers trust to provide them with travel expertise and memorable experiences.

best europe travel tours

Note: If you’re looking for our most recent recommendations, check out the 2023 list of our favorite tour operators .

When it comes to an itinerary, Travel + Leisure readers want more than a string of photo opportunities — and the right tour operator makes all the difference in creating a trip of a lifetime versus one that simply checks off a list of sights. This year, our readers were especially drawn to companies that utilize local expertise and experience to thoughtfully design trips that will entertain as well as inspire.

Every year for our World's Best Awards survey , T+L asks readers to weigh in on travel experiences around the globe — to share their opinions on the top hotels, resorts, cities, islands, cruise ships, spas, airlines, and more. Readers rated tour operators and safari outfitters based on their staff and guides, itineraries and destinations, activities, accommodations, food, and overall value.

The top picks were noted for their deep knowledge of destinations and guides who "go the extra mile." One reader who has been traveling for more than five decades said a trip with Classic Journeys (No. 2) was the "very best" they had experienced. Others noted attention to pandemic safety details, while one who went to Norway was charmed by a "wonderful surprise dinner in Bergen out on the water that was fantastic."

Tour operators that seamlessly navigated the logistics of a trip also came out on top. Quasar Expeditions (No. 9) was noted "for really planning out every detail" so that "all you have to do is show up and have a great time." Meanwhile, of TCS World Travel (No. 10), a guest said: "You never lift a finger and just spend your time actually exploring the destination." They even added that they "learned so much" along the way.

Among the five companies on this year's list that weren't on last year's were two women-only tour operators that cater to travelers of all ages. AdventureWomen (No. 14) has multiday tours designed by women from Bhutan to Yellowstone National Park, while Explorer Chick (No. 15) has everything from day trips — like glassblowing in Baltimore and cave rappelling in St. Louis — to full itineraries in Machu Picchu and the Galápagos. One reader said her Everest Base Camp trip with AdventureWomen was filled with "like-minded women" who "bonded so well," while another said she felt it was a "safe tour group for women."

No matter which tour they chose, readers were most taken by the people they met along the way, as one said of Trek Travel (No. 13): "By the end of the trip, a group of strangers felt like longtime friends." Find out which other companies round out the list of the best tour operators below.

1. DuVine Cycling + Adventure Co.

A tour with DuVine goes far beyond just riding a bike — it's a way to really see the character of a destination. Case in point: even those who say they're not necessarily cycling fans have been converted. That's part of what helped the tour operator — which runs trips in Europe, the U.S., Latin America, and Africa — skyrocket from No. 14 last year to this year's top spot. Its "top-notch biking equipment" and "challenging but doable itineraries" didn't hurt either. One reader was especially taken by a guide picking figs off of a local tree in Puglia for an extra energy boost during a tough climb, as well as another guide singing to the group after dinner. As another reader put it simply: "They exceed your expectations."

Best Time for Travel Exploring Scotland & Ireland

While just about any month is great to visit Scotland and Ireland, there are a few prime times of the year for the Exploring Scotland & Ireland tour. Here are some recommendations from our destination experts.

Spring: Springtime is a wonderful time to visit the region! The countryside comes alive with flowers and shades of green, and the days of sunlight are growing just a bit longer, giving you more time to explore.

Summer: August is the perfect time to visit Edinburgh, as the Military Tattoo and Edinburgh Festival both take place then. It’s crowded, but the city is alive with many cultural events. And generally, it’s good weather (fingers crossed for not too much rain!).

Fall: Daylight hours grow shorter, and the weather is not quite as hospitable as summer, but the changing colors of the landscape are truly lovely. Fewer crowds make it easier to navigate sites and take your time to enjoy them.

1. Florence, Italy

Known as the birthplace of the Renaissance, Florence is a city that’s overflowing with history, culture and art. It’s a beautiful city that’s one of the most romantic places in Italy – but it’s not just for couples!

Like most cities in Italy, this is a destination that’s packed with stunning landmarks and architecture. Florence Cathedral is absolutely gorgeous and the city’s gardens are the perfect spot for a solo stroll in summer.

Florence also has some of the best museums and galleries to explore, including the Uffizi Gallery and Accademia Gallery, which is where you can see Michelangelo’s David.

As a walkable and compact city, Florence is the perfect place for a slower-paced solo getaway. You’ll also find some of Italy’s best foodie spots in Florence so it’s ideal if all you want to do is indulge and live the Dolce Vita lifestyle.

Where to stay: Hotel Calimala

2. Lisbon, Portugal

If you’re worried about safety traveling alone in Europe (especially as a female solo traveler), Lisbon is a great capital city to consider. Widely seen as one of the safest major cities in Europe, Lisbon is artsy, vibrant and amazing to explore.

Recently, Lisbon has become a lot more popular with backpackers and digital nomads thanks to being one of the more affordable destinations in Western Europe.

This also means there’s a lot going on socially for those who want to travel solo to Lisbon but still have a chance to meet new people. You’ll find many cool hostels, bars and nightlife scenes to join.

There’s lots to take in – from the cute, cobblestoned neighborhood of Alfama to the UNESCO attractions of Belém.

There’s also plenty for culture lovers with street art and gorgeous architecture, as well as markets and a great foodie scene. If you have extra time, a day trip to Sintra is also well worth it.

Where to stay: Hotel Da Baixa

Despite being easy to reach from both Europe and the Eastern US, Iceland feels like a faraway fairytale land. If you’re after a unique setting for a solo adventure, not many places in Europe compare. I visited Iceland in October over a long weekend and had an incredible experience.

Known as one of the world’s safest countries, Iceland is a perfect choice for solo travelers in any season . There’s also an incredible choice of things to see and is ideal for a back-to-nature getaway.

From waterfall and geyser tours to hiking and chasing the Northern Lights , there are so many bucket list experiences in Iceland. If you want solitude, you could rent a car and explore the Golden Circle on a self-drive solo vacation.

Or, you could join a group tour or take organized day trips to the country’s key attractions. There’s so much to fill your time that it will be an unforgettable, bucket list vacation.

So if you’re looking for a relaxing and leisurely city break, this could be the perfect destination for you.

5. Barcelona, Spain

Barcelona is another great solo travel destination in Europe. On a solo trip to Barcelona you can explore architecture that is renowned around the world, explore artsy neighborhoods, join in on the nightlife scene and feast on tapas.

While Barcelona is a popular tourist destination, you can still cater your experience of the city to be more unique by getting off the beaten path .

With its combination of beach life, city life and museum scene you’ll have plenty to explore in this famous Spanish city .

Where to stay: Petit Palace Boqueria Garden

6. Paris, France

Sure, many consider Paris a city fit for romance. It certainly can be that, but as someone who has frequently solo traveled to Paris I can assure you it’s just as fun on your own.

You can follow my own solo Paris trip itinerary or curate one based even more on your own tastes. It’s possible to visit all of the typical tourist attractions in Paris solo without feeling out of place, as the areas are always busy anyway.

Find a bit of peace with a solo sit near Trocadero, looking up at the Eiffel Tower from the grassy surroundings.

Wander aimlessly through the streets of Montmartre. Enjoy a sunset river cruise as you learn about the city. Romanticize your relationship with yourself in the city of lights. You can even book a solo travel photography session like I did.

If you’re wondering how safe Paris is , simply follow the typical safety best practices you’d follow in any big city – avoid dark, empty streets alone at night and keep a close eye on your belongings.

Where to stay: Elysées Ceramic

7. Rome, Italy

Ah, Roma.

Rome is one of my personal favorite cities in Europe and I have plenty of Rome tips to share from my travels there. I’ve traveled to Rome many times, both solo and not, and have loved every experience.

Despite its oft-chaotic, gritty city feel at times I’ve always felt perfectly safe in Rome . While there are areas I’d avoid being out alone in at night, that’s true of really any city I travel to.

Rome is bustling with life and energy at all hours, and especially if you stay near the city center you’ll never feel alone.

Whether you visit on a solo trip or not, Rome is worth seeing at some point in your travels.

Where to stay: Kolbe Hotel

8. Crete, Greece

If you’re dreaming of a sun-kissed island escape in Europe, Greece is probably on your bucket list. This is a country that has so much to offer. As well as captivating historical and cultural sites, Greece has some of the best beaches in Europe.

It’s also a destination that’s known for its friendly locals, so it’s a generally safe country for a solo trip. Island-hopping is an amazing option for solo travel in Greece. But, if you want the ease of sticking to just one destination, you’ll want to add Crete to your list.

As Greece’s largest island, Crete has a ton to offer. You’ll find so much to fill your time – from boat trips and beach days to hiking and visiting ancient historical sites. It’s an amazing island to explore.

If you’re planning a summer trip, Edinburgh is also great in August during the Festival Fringe. The Edinburgh Festival Fringe is the biggest performing arts festival in the world!

10. Venice, Italy

Venice might be one of the most romantic cities in Europe, but it has so much to offer solo travellers in Italy , too. A one-of-a-kind destination, this city is magical and bursting with charm.

If you love history, culture and architecture, Venice is absolutely worth visiting and definitely needs to be on your European solo travel list.

The only way to get around Venice is by boat or on foot so it’s a great option if you love to leisurely wander. It’s also a safe destination and is an option where you won’t need to worry about navigating public transport or finding yourself too far off the beaten path.

In fact, getting lost in Venice is part of the experience and one of the places where it’s safest for solo travelers to do so.

There’s loads to see and do in Venice, too – from visiting St Mark’s Basilica and Doge’s Palace to exploring the outer islands of Murano, Burano and Torcello. It’s a city where you definitely won’t be bored on your own.

A pocket-sized city, Bruges feels like a fairytale European destination. If you’re after a quaint and compact city that’s packed with history, this is the one for you.

Known for its canals, winding streets and beautiful Flemish architecture, Bruges is exceptionally photogenic (there’s a reason why it’s known as Venice of the North!). But, not only this – Bruges is also a very safe city with low crime rates.

Walking is the best way to get around Bruges so there’s no need to navigate public transport. The historic center and the lively Markt Square are the highlights.

You could also hop on a canal cruise, visit Minnewater Park and make the most of the food scene with Belgian chocolate, fries and waffles.

Where to stay: Hotel Adornes

14. Ibiza, Spain

Spain’s Balearic Islands (Majorca, Menorca, Ibiza and Formentera) are famed for being some of the world’s most beautiful. Gorgeous beaches, picturesque fishing villages and breathtaking natural scenery sum up these Mediterranean islands. All are great for solo travel, but Ibiza has to be a top pick.

Known for its nightlife with beach clubs and bars, Ibiza is an amazing choice for solo travelers who want to socialize. But, there’s also so much more to Ibiza than its party scene. Away from the iconic bars, Ibiza has super pretty towns, historic sites, a beautiful coastline and quieter areas as well.

Yoga is big in Ibiza, so it’s perfect if you’re interested in going on a wellness retreat. Plus, you could also join boat trips, go hiking and relax on the beach. There’s something for every solo traveler to fall in love with in Ibiza.

Where to stay: Hostal Rosell Boutique

Cinque Terre weather in October?

When does the weather start to get "iffie" for a few days stay in Cinque Terre? Thanks! Kerry

I've always had fine weather on the Mediterranean cost over several years of October visits. Places I've been rained on in October include Paris, Normandy, Rome, and all of Bulgaria.

Was there the last week of September a couple of years ago, temps in the 50s the first day with 40 MPH winds off the Med and light rain. It was too windy for the boats, but OK to hike a bit. Next two days were in the high 70s with light winds and clear skies and everything was easily accessible. I'd recommend a light jacket, a sweater and lightweight layered clothing and you should be fine when you're going. I took my golf rain suit as a precaution and it saved me several times on the trip. Views from the hiking trails will be great in October, but save some time for relaxing and their incredible wines (even the grapes are great). I'm going back solo next April to hike all nine miles of the trails and the weather then is supposed to be fabulous.

thanks Laura and Jim! I will perhaps wait until the tours for April to Italy open up this next year...do you know when that usually happens?

In general, in the CT, the weather starts to get iffie sometime in October, at least it seems October is a transitional month, weather-wise. Of course, as one of the above posts mentions, the weather can be bad in September, or in April. You just never know. Some travelers here will report "we had good weather in the CT in October." And then again, some travelers have reported not-so-good weather in the CT in October. If we had good weather data, which we don't, it would probably show that on average there is some difference between weather in the CT in early October versus late October, on average. But weather is never average.

This sounds like a question to consult an almanac (or some weather predictor website) but you can have my data point, but I think it was freak weather that experience:

I went to the Cinque Terre the week of Oct 18 2010 (somewhere middle of that week) and it was raining. The rain caused the park (the Cinque Terre park network) to close some of the trails/roads for safety. It was cold and wet: I layered up and was barely comfortable (but as I live in California and am a wimp to cold, the low 50s already feel chilly to me). Some rich lady tourists I noticed on the Cinque Terre trail (I am making a guess about their economic status based on some visible clues) were wearing lightly padded quilty looking trench coats and hats and looked comfortably warm. At night, the wind was pretty strong.

Lest that account deter you: let me assure you the weather did not ruin my experience. When it's cold, the tourist hordes empty out so it's not as crowded. You appreciate parts of your trip like coming into a warm hotel after walking outside, a hot cup of coffee/tea, seeing your friends in a brightly lit restaurant, and discovering that your freshly washed clothes you've been wearing half a week now and are sick of seeing, having come out of a warm dryer, are now wonderful. The hot focaccia at that shop is a great snack break while you wait a few minutes for the rain to clear. You pay attention when the sun comes out for your chance at great photos.

Europe Explorer Grand Tour “Dacia Route”

This was an amazing adventure that we waited for 2 1/2 years after canceling twice because of Covid restrictions. As a reference point, we are seasoned travelers who have visited 73 countries. The trip was well worth the wait as we traveled through 6 countries that are full of history, ancient and modern sites, culture, and interesting people. There is a lot of time in the vehicle as expected as you travel through these countries in only 14 days. Each day was full of interesting sites and history. The Balkans have been very important for civilization for thousands of years as they are the crossroad between Asia and Europe and have always been valuable territory that has been fought over for thousands of years. We learned about the accomplishments and conflicts that still exist today. We even saw history in the making in Macedonia and Bulgaria. Albania Explorer is an excellent company that over delivered on their promise of a great trip. Alma was always available to answer all our questions promptly. All of their travel arrangements were perfect with no problems. We could not have had a better guide than Seimer who shared an enormous amount of information at every stop. He even surprised us with some excellent unplanned stops. We now consider him our friend. We hope to have the opportunity to travel with Albania Explorer and Seimer again some day.

Rome to Berlin: Piazzas, Prague & the Past

Great diversity of countries and cities but WAY too fast paced. One night in Slovenia and Poland was ridiculous and with travel time some days we spent less than 15 hours in the city. The guide was a but inexperienced so we didn't have a good description of some of the cities. Great way to make friends and see cities! Would recommend going end of August or later as it was still very hot going through the cities!!

Baltic Experience Tour

Baltic Experience

The Baltic Experience tour was a lot of fun! Our Tour Leader, Agata, was superb! The small tour size (we had six participants) meant we got to know each other well. The tour had a perfect mix of planned group activities and time to explore the sites on our own. The on-line tour description was accurate and extensive. Three cautions: Travel insurance is MANDATORY, somewhat expensive, and not included in the tour price. Many, like me, will commit to the tour not knowing this additional cost will be tacked on. Second, the tour sometimes involves significant walking (up to 30 minutes) from transportation facilities to hotels while carrying your own bags (two weeks of baggage), as well as walking tours that sometimes involve climbing as many as 800 steps. This is a tour for fairly young and fit participants. Finally, European hotels and home-stay facilities generally don't have air conditioning or screened windows, meaning sometimes in the summer you will have to choose between sleeping in hot, stuffy rooms or opening the windows for mosquitoes to enter. All that said, this was a thoroughly enjoyable and memorable experience and I would highly recommend it for fit, adventurous people with positive attitudes who can tolerate occasional less-than-luxurious accommodations.

Tour from Athens to Dubrovnik or Split: 7 Balkan countries in 14 days

This tour exceeded our expectations. The history of these countries is very interesting. The cities and towns we visited were fascinating. The scenery of mountains, lakes and coast was beautiful. We saw wonderful churches, mosques, monasteries, bazaars, castles, forts and walled cities. Our guide Sokol was great fun to be with. Before booking this trip, we had lots of questions, which were answered by Sirma from the CHOOSE BALKANS team promptly and with the information we had requested. As tourism is increasing in these countries, visiting at this point in time was magical. The use of local hotels was nice. This was a special trip that we highly recommend, and will stay in our minds for a long time.

Tour from Athens to Belgrade: 7 Balkan countries in 14 days

Our 4 days tour was more than we imagined. The sights, smells, and history were simply stunning, things I will never forget. You will get the most of the Balkans in four days. I will definitely visit Albania again, it is a hidden gem. Lovely experience

This was a great trip with an excellent guide. Our driver Aper was brilliant negotiating a terrible rain storm while crossing mountainous areas with very narrow roads on one occasion.

Anatolian Civilizations | 10 Days

All visits were very impressive, however there is a fair amount of travel on some days in the bus but worth it to see as much as you can in the time frame. Our guide was very experienced and knowledgeable. Our driver was also very careful while driving. Food options were OK at the hotels. The sunrise balloon ride over Cappadocia was fantastic we highly recommend this optional activity. We also upgraded our hotel to a cave hotel however our initial hotel was also nice one. We travelled in a full size coach even though there were only 19 of us. There is no toilet in the bus, the driver stops every two hours which was OK. Turkey is full of friendly people, we had a lot of fun. We probably return back!

Balkan Experience – seven countries in two weeks - SMALL GROUP Tour

Balkan Experience – seven countries in two weeks - SMALL GROUP

I enjoyed this tour and would recommend it. Having a small group is a real positive as it allows the group to gel and share experiences. My group were all really good company and very knowledgeable travellers. Our guide was knowledgable and really added value, particularly on the history side which is a keen interest of mine. All the hotels were comfortable, and handily placed for exploring in your free time, with the exception of one. Ideally I would have liked a little more time in Tirana and Sofia potentially by reducing the time in Skopje. Looking forward to my next trip to the region!

The Balkan Adventure Tour -12 days/11 nights from Skopje Tour

The Balkan Adventure Tour -12 days/11 nights from Skopje

We loved the hikes; only wished they could have been longer. We wish we didn't have to spend so much time driving, but we understand that there is no other way to see so many things in so few days. We would have liked to spend more time in Sarajevo. Don't schedule Nis for a Monday since the best sites are closed on Monday. Overall, it was a great introduction to the history and natural beauty of the Balkans, but be prepared for a lot of driving.

Magic Carpet Tour

I recently went on the 10 day Magic Carpet Tour and everything was excellent. Our guide Tamir, was very knowledgeable and always considered our needs. Our driver, Harcan, drove well and got us to our destinations safely. Both were very experienced in the travel industry. Hotels selected for the tour were all excellent. The cave hotel in Capadosia was unbelievablely luxurious. We also enjoyed the hotel at Pamukale which had a number of thermal pools. The tour also included breakfast which was always the choice of a great variety of foods. Dinners were also great and a good introduction to Turkish cuisine. The route of the tour included Istanbul major archaeological sites on the west coast, Pamukale and Capadosia. All were very interesting and Tamers explanations were always informative. I would highly recommend this tour. It was an amazing 10 days.

Turkish Breeze-10 Days Tour

Turkish Breeze-10 Days

Took the full 10 day tour with my wife including istanbul, izmir, Pamukkale, Antalya and cappadocia. Cannot thank them enough. Incredibly well organized and professional. We even booked the night before the tour started and they set up everything for you so you don't have to think. The guides are as knowledgeable as anyone can hope for. Tour guide in Izmir was especially excellent, telling me about fake coins, coming up with solutions for bugs, getting my money back on a bad drink, etc. Overall, they go out of their way to accommodate your situation best they can and it's not easy to organize these complex trips with multiple planes, etc. The reviews here were right: if you want a thought-free trip, these guys are the way to go. Only feedback is timing at each place. Everything is incredibly tight so be prepared to not spend as much time in certain places as you wish. Definitely be ready to be always moving. It feels like there's never a chance to breathe from all the activities and travel. I would recommend spacing certain things out ESPECIALLY Pammakule waterfalls which is arguably everyone's favorite thing. Felt like I got 30 min to be there, which is not right to the guests But overally, it's hard to plan a cross country tour for everyone, and they do an amazing job taking you safely step by step through a lovely vacation. You will totally unwind your brain with them.

Reviews of Small Group tours to Europe

Great diversity of countries and cities but WAY too fast paced. One night in Slovenia and Poland was ridiculous and with travel time some days we spent less than 15 hours in the city. The guide was a but inexperienced so we didn't have a good description of some of the cities. Great way to make friends and see cities! Would recommend going end of August or later as it was still very hot going through the cities!!
TourRadar did a fine job of making the purchase of my Tour du Mont Blanc easy and accurate.
