Between the lengthy TSA lines, crowded gates, and multi-hour layovers, schlepping through the airport is stressful enough on your own. Throw in a puppy—even worse, one who has rarely left the house—and things get all the more hectic. As a new pet owner, I’ve learned that a sturdy, well-designed pet carrier can make or break your (and your four-legged friend’s) plane ride and airport experience .

When it comes to picking the perfect pet carrier, you want something durable, lightweight, and designed with plenty of storage space for treats, toys, pads, leashes, poop bags, and, well, any other pet accessory you could dream of. Most importantly, the pet carrier should also meet all airline size regulations and guidelines so that you’re not panicking the night before your flight wondering what’ll happen if you can’t shove the carrier far enough under your seat.

Enter the Wild One Travel Carrier , which ended up meeting—and surpassing—all of my expectations, leaving me and my pup feeling at ease as we made our way through the clouds. Almost immediately after I purchased my dog a plane ticket to Florida to tag along with my husband and me for spring break —my dog's first flight with us—I began researching pet carriers. After countless hours spent scouring Facebook recommendations and Amazon reviews, I came across Wild One’s Travel Carrier. Initially, I didn’t buy it—instead, I opted for a much cheaper Amazon alternative. However, when that one arrived with a broken zipper just a week before our flight, I took it as a sign to trust my gut and order Wild One's carrier.

Fortunately, my instinct turned out to be correct. The Wild One Travel Carrier was delivered straight to my doorstep in perfect condition, and I instantly loved how lightweight it was (less than a pound on its own). While my dog is small at just 10 pounds, I didn’t want anything overly bulky that would weigh me down—and cause unpleasant shoulder pain—while rushing toward my gate. I also loved the carrier’s sleek exterior. While it comes in fun colors like a fashion-forward tan and a striking green, I opted for basic black to combat stains, dirt, and debris.

It’s clear this carrier was designed with versatility, durability, and functionality in mind. There are mesh walls for added breathability, a built-in collar clip, a detachable shoulder strap that pulls double duty as a leash, and a cushion that can be rolled out to use as a plush dog bed or travel mat when you get to your destination. I’d also be remiss not to mention the exterior storage pockets, which can be used to hold everything from pee pads to smartphones. (Some are zippered for an extra sense of security, while the smaller ones are left open to offer easy access.) Additionally, there is an outer strap that allows you to attach the carrier to your suitcase for hands-free, but still secure, carrying. Best of all? My dog didn’t seem to mind it one bit.

I flew JetBlue in an Even More Space seat down to Florida and had plenty of legroom to spare, even with the pet carrier tucked away under my seat. What’s more, the carrier’s low profile also offered my pup some extra room to poke his head out, which he did throughout the entire flight. On the way back, I flew in Delta’s Main Cabin, and, even with far less legroom, my dog was able to pop his head out, and I could still sit comfortably.

When I got home, I threw the interior mat in the wash, cleaned the outside of the carrier with a Lysol wipe, and tucked it away in my coat closet so that it’s ready for the next time we travel together.

Insider Today

Finding a pet carrier that meets all the needs of your four-legged frequent flier, and yours, too, is a challenge. What you want is lightweight, durable, loaded with pockets for pet gear and your own items, as comfortable inside as your dog's bed, easy to get your dog into, and attractive — while meeting airline and train travel regulations and size.

I found dog carriers that were too heavy, too cramped, and lacking added storage, which meant toting an extra bag for dog essentials along with my luggage. I would arrive at my destination with a body that needed a chiropractic adjustment, and a dog who could use one too.

Then I was sent the new Wild One Air Travel Carrier to test. It's a sleek and elegant bag that is loaded with extras.

Wild One is a New York City-based startup that was founded in September 2018 by a group of pet lovers with a clean, modern design aesthetic. The company's mission is to "make living the 'pet life' easier and more joyful." To that end, they produce high-quality, functional gear and toys with a classic appeal. They also give back by donating a portion of their proceeds to Badass Brooklyn Animal Rescue , a nonprofit rescue organization that helps find homes for dogs from high-kill shelters in the rural South.

Wild One designed a TSA-approved dog carrier that is comfortable for dogs and convenient for their owners

The Air Travel Carrier is available in black and tan. I was sent the black version to test. Made from lightweight neoprene blended with polyester and spandex, it's soft-sided but with the shape retention of a hard-sided carrier.

Designed to meet airline regulations, it measures 17.5 inches long, 11 inches wide, and 10 inches high and is recommended for dogs up to 16 pounds. My 4.5 pound Yorkie, Buster, can actually stand up in it, let alone turn around per regulations.

Mesh panels cover the sides and the top. They provide plenty of ventilation yet are discreet enough that some might not even notice you're traveling with your dog. Each side panel also has a privacy screen that can be retracted by zipper, and you can partly unzip the sides or the top so your dog can pop their head out. Inside, there's a quilted cushioned mat to keep them comfortable.

There are two carry handles, a removable adjustable shoulder strap that doubles as a leash, and a trolley sleeve. The sleeve fits easily over a luggage handle, and thanks to the carrier's rigid bottom, even with a tiny dog like Buster, the bag balances nicely on top of luggage. But if you've checked your bags and will be wearing the carrier on your shoulder or holding it by the carry handles, don't worry — it is actually surprisingly light.

The Wild One Air Travel Carrier is loaded with extras

The zippered outside pocket on the front spans the entire width of the carrier. On a recent trip, it held everything I needed for my dog, including treats, food, waste bags, and a travel water bowl. There are also two small open pockets on the backside where you can fit a cell phone, boarding pass, or passport.

But the most brilliant part of this carrier is the removable shoulder strap that actually doubles as a leash — at about 4 feet long fully extended, it's perfect for walking your dog before a flight or for keeping them close while waiting at the gate. When it's not needed, it can be stored inside a flap in the cushioned interior mat.

It gets even better though. When you arrive at your destination, you can unzip the carrier, fold down the front panel, and turn it into a canopy bed that functions as a comfy den.

While the carrier is hand wash only, when the quilted cushioned mat needs to be cleaned, you can toss it into a washing machine and dryer. To store the carrier, you can unzip the top and the sides, and it folds up flat and compact to fit on a shelf or in a drawer.

My dog happily traveled first-class in this carrier and got a good night's sleep in it, too

A couple of weekends ago, I made my first trek upstate with the travel carrier. With Buster, my Yorkie, snug in a sling lined with fleece, and Roxy, my 8-pound Pomeranian traveling first-class in the Wild One, I set off for the train from New York City going upstate.

The carrier was light enough to stay on my shoulder while I changed trains midway to get to Grand Central. This is more impressive than it sounds as I'm a petite person who does not bear up well under weight on my shoulders.

On the subway, I zipped down the side panel so Roxy could pop her adorable head out and do what she does best — make friends. If she had hands, she would have signed a dozen autographs by the time we arrived at Grand Central.

I carried Roxy to her first "mountain" adventure without being encumbered by a bulky, heavy bag. She curled up for a nap inside the Wild One and stayed asleep for the entire 90-minute train ride. My friend met us at the station, and we set out on the road to the park where we could hike. It was about 2 miles, mostly uphill, and I turned the shoulder strap into a dog leash so Roxy could walk.

Later that night at my friend's house, Roxy again snoozed happily in her canopy bed dreaming of more adventures. The Wild One Air Travel Carrier delivered on all fronts.

I found a few minor inconveniences with this carrier. The top zipper feels a bit flimsy. It opens completely like a zipper on a jacket, but it can be difficult to reconnect the two sides. After a few uses, the zipper still works, so it remains to be seen how it will hold up over the long term.

The privacy screen can only be fully zipped up or down, when I would prefer double-sided zippers so I can unzip the top half and leave the screen in place on the lower half.

The bottom line

The Wild One Air Travel Carrier is elegant and lightweight, and Wild One not only mastered the basics but also added thoughtful and useful extras like a leash, spacious pockets, and a convertible bed. Your dog (or cat) will travel comfortably, and you will too.

The price tag may be too high for some. If it isn't in your budget, we recommend the Prodigen Airline-Approved Pet Carrier ($22.99) .

But if you can pay a little more, we highly recommend this airline-compliant pet carrier. It will give you a great excuse to take a vacation and bring your best friend along for the ride.

Pros: Clean, modern design; lightweight; rigid frame keeps its shape; plenty of pockets; converts to a bed

Cons: Expensive, zipper at the top is tricky, privacy side panels can't be partially retracted

When it comes to air travel with a pet, having the right-sized carrier—one that is comfortable for you and your companion—will streamline your trip.

The requirements for in-cabin and cargo use vary among airlines, but you can find links to dimension and other guidance from several prominent airlines in the "What To Look For In A Pet Carrier" section below. These restrictions typically do not apply to service animals.

To help you select the best carrier for your next ex paw dition, we purchased and tested 13 airline-approved pet carriers. Each one was taken on a least one roundtrip domestic flight with a cat or dog on a major airline.

After testing, our favorite airline-approved carrier is Away's The Pet Carrier , which features a removable liner, mesh ventilation on three sides, and a trolley sleeve for easy use with your handled luggage. Plus, it's crash test certified.

  • What To Look for

How We Tested

Why trust the spruce pets, best overall, away the pet carrier.

  • Quality 5 /5
  • Comfort 5 /5
  • Portability 5 /5
  • Design 5 /5

Crash test certified by the Center for Pet Safety

Water-resistant lining

Removable and washable bed

Trolley sleeve for seatbelt or suitcase handlebar placement

Not suitable for pets over 18 pounds

The Away Pet Carrier is sturdy, sleek, versatile, and easy to clean. Plus, it meets the requirements of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) so it’s suitable for in-cabin use on most major airlines (always check with your flight provider).

During the testing period, our Chihuahua-mix participant was comfortable and secure for the duration of a six-hour flight. The Away carrier's leather and nylon exterior is structured enough to offer protection and stability, but has enough flexibility to squeeze into tight under-seat spaces. We also found it easy to carry by hand or over a shoulder, with double straps similar to a gym bag.

The Pet Carrier has both internal and external pockets, including a side pocket with a waterproof lining and drainage holes—ideal for a collapsible water bowl. Mesh panels on three sides make for excellent ventilation, and each can also be unzipped for quick access to your pet, or covered with privacy panels to block external stimulation. The interior has a padded, fuzzy bed that is both removable and machine washable.

The carrier has a weight maximum of 18 pounds, which is lower than others on our list, but keep in mind that some airlines have a 20 pound weight maximum for pet and carrier combined. Airlines may weigh pets with their carriers on the luggage scale, and an 18-pound dog combined with the 4-pound Away travel carrier might lead to travel disruptions, so it's a limit you'll want to be conscious of before traveling.

This bag is more expensive than others that made our list, but we found the craftsmanship of this pet carrier to be superior. Away provides a warranty for one year after purchase. It also comes with a dust bag for storage between flights. And to top it all off, this carrier received a five-star crash test rating certification from the Center for Pet Safety .

Best for Small Dogs

Wild one travel carrier.

Wild One

  • Size 3.5 /5
  • Quality 4.5 /5
  • Comfort 4 /5
  • Portability 4 /5
  • Design 4 /5

Versatile design includes a shoulder strap that can be used as a leash

Easy to wipe clean

Folds flat when not in use

Can be personalized with your dog’s name

It was a very snug fit under the seat on a Delta flight in coach

The carrier’s measurements exceed limits for some major airlines

Not all small dogs can fully stand up when the carrier is closed

This versatile pet carrier has an internal padded mat that can be unfolded to expand giving your dog a cozy space to nap once you arrive at your destination. The bag has a cylindrical shape that does not allow for all small dogs to stand up inside when fully zipped up but does offer more space horizontally for them to spread out. Our tester dog, an eight-pound Pomeranian, had space to lay down, put their head up, and get comfortable, but if you’ve got a short-legged friend, like Dachshund , or a very petite pal, like a Chihuahua , then they’ll fit right in.

The carrier is well made with durable zippers, allowing for flexibility in use and mesh paneling for airflow and to keep your dog in view. To get your dog acclimated to the bag, you can open up one of the sides to let them come in and out as they please, and when you are on the plane, you can unzip just the top to slide in a treat. The shoulder strap can be removed and used as a leash, and there are two additional padded handles for a comfortable and secure grip.

A slotted panel on the back allows you to place it on the handlebars of your suitcase or secure it in a car by passing a seatbelt through. However, unlike our selection for Best Overall, the Away Pet Carrier, this bag has not been crash test certified by the Center for Pet Safety. The carrier is available in black, green, and tan, and folds up flat for storage.

Dimensions: 17.5 x 11 x 10 inches | Size Recommendation: Pets up to 16 pounds | Colors: Black, green, tan | Materials: Neoprene, mesh, polyester

Best Budget

Petsfit expandable pet carrier.

  • Size 4.5 /5

Plush liner can be unzipped and removed for cleaning

The expandable side gives pet more room to spread out

Includes external pocket and and a loop for wheeled luggage handles

Handles are not padded and can become uncomfortable

The Petsfit Expandable Pet Carrier offers extra space for your pet at a reasonable price. The small-sized version is a fraction of the cost when compared to the Away Pet Carrier , our Best Overall choice.

The wire-framed structure of the carrier allows for flexibility when placed under an airline seat. While you wait to board, a zippered mesh encasement can be opened up while keeping your pet fully contained. Pets are usually required to stay in their carriers unless you are in a designated pet area of the airport. With this carrier, a zippered mesh encasement can be opened up while giving your pet extra room to stretch while keeping them fully contained. Our participating dog could not fully stand in the small-sized carrier, but they did have room to move around and get cozy. The carrier comes with a plush pad that can be unzipped and fully removed for cleaning.

The carrier has a padded shoulder strap and two unpadded handles. We found the latter to be slightly uncomfortable when holding for a longer duration (e.g. waiting in line to deplane). To give your hands and shoulder a break, there is a loop on one side to slot through the telescopic handlebar of a suitcase.

Dimensions: 16 x 10 x 9 inches (small); 17 x 11 x 11 inches (medium); 19 x 12 x 12 inches (large) | Size Recommendation: Small for pets up to 9 pounds; medium for pet up to 13 pounds; large for pets up to 19 pounds | Colors: Green, black, gray-brown, light gray | Materials: Nylon, mesh

Best for Cargo

Gunner g1 kennel intermediate.

Lifetime warranty

Back wheels make the heavy carrier easier to transport

Small, Medium, and Intermediate sizes are 5 Star Crash Test certified by the Center For Pet Safety

Reinforce sides absorb impact and regulate temperature

Very heavy and typically requires more than one person to move

If your dog is too big to fly in the main cabin—which for most airlines is around 20 pounds—then they will have to ride in the cargo section of the airplane. The best option we found is the Gunner G1 Kennel. It’s designed to keep your dog as comfortable as possible, with rotomolded double walls to regulate the temperature and absorb the impact for any bumps that may occur during takeoff, in the air, and when landing. You won’t be able to access your dog during your flight, so it’s important to make sure they are secure prior to boarding.

Your dog will need water in their kennel for the flight, and the recessed floor for this carrier will limit any discomfort they may experience in case of a spill. You can also add an orthopedic bed designed for the kennel or your dog’s favorite blanket.

The kennels are made in the United States and come with a lifetime warranty. There are four sizes available and all except the largest received a five-star crash test certification from the Center for Pet Safety .

To find the right size for your dog, Gunner offers an online tool that takes into consideration your dog’s weight and measurements with length from nose to base of tail and height from front paws to top of the head. The kennel has rear wheels to help with transport, but we found it necessary to have two adults at a minimum for moving, especially with a dog inside. And in case anyone with hands instead of paws gets stuck inside, the door can be opened from both sides by humans.

Dimensions : 24.5 x 18.62 x 19 inches (small); 29.5 x 20.5 x 23.5 inches (medium); 34 x 23 x 28.5 inches (intermediate); 40.25 x 28 x 33.25 inches (large) | Size Recommendation: Various; depends on height and length of dog | Colors: Tan, gunmetal, green, mossy oak, black | Materials: Aluminum

Best Tote Style

Love thy beast nylon pet travel carrier.

Love Thy Beast

Sturdy base with an easy-to-remove platform for cleaning

Large zipper pocket on one side

Smaller zipper pocket also functions as a loop for suitcase handles or seatbelt

Lightweight and suitable for daily use

Soft sides don’t provide as much protection

The Love Thy Beast Nylon Pet Travel Carrier is a soft-sided tote-style bag with two shoulder straps and a sturdy base so your pet can stand confidently. It’s made of nylon and canvas, and the internal panel, which is held in place with hook and loop straps, is easy to take out and wipe clean. It’s also very lightweight and suitable for daily use.

Our eight-pound canine participant was able to stand up, sit, lay, and turn around inside the bag when fully zipped. The bag is designed to support dogs up to 25 pounds.

The two longer sides of the rectangular-shaped bag are opaque and each features a zippered pocket. One pocket is large enough to stash essentials such as puppy pads , a leash , and a collapsible water bowl . The other pocket is slimmer with dual zippers so it can also be used as a loop for a seatbelt or suitcase handlebars. The top and shorter sides are made from a durable mesh so you and your pet can keep an eye on each other.

We found that the mesh made it difficult for other passengers to see our furry traveler, and the bag has less structured protection than other carriers we tested, so be sure to give your aisle mates notice that your pet is inside so they can watch their step.

Dimensions: 17 x 8 x 12 inches | Size Recommendation: Pets up to 25 pounds | Colors : Black, forest, dust, red | Materials: Nylon, canvas | Care: Spot cleaning recommended

Best for Cats

Travel cat the transpurrter.

Stratch resistant mesh and water-resistant interior

Interior is designed to be calming with full blackout capability

Various straps allow for customization in how the bag is carried

Carrier is long, limiting its ability to fit under all airline seats

Too unwieldy for wearing as a crossbody carrier

With scratch-resistant mesh, the Transpurrter Ultimate Calming Convertible Cat Carrier from Travel Cat is an excellent choice for air travel with a kitty companion. If you have an anxious cat or one that is new to travel, this carrier is designed to offer a calming space with a black interior and a full blackout side panel to block out external stimulation.

The versatile bag can be carried in multiple ways including as a duffle, a backpack, and on top of a suitcase. We found the bag to be easy to carry in all formations except as a crossbody bag. But the weight distribution might feel different for you with your cat inside.

A leash tether is located inside so you can open up one of the panels to let your cat poke their head out. This is both adorable and very convenient for layovers, giving your cat the opportunity to see where they are without worrying that they will escape. To further foil any spur-of-the-moment urges to bolt from the bag, the zippers snap closed to prevent your cat from pawing it open.

The carrier features external pockets for essentials, is easy to spot clean, and has an internal mat that can be removed and machine washed.

Dimensions: 19 X 10.5 X 11 inches | Size Recommendation : Pets up to 30 pounds | Colors: Black and teal | Materials: Nylon, mesh

The Spruce Pets / Morgan Ashley Parker

Our favorite airline-ready pet carrier is Away's The Pet Carrier , which is not only attractive but fully featured, with multiple points of entry, a trolley sleeve, lots of ventilation, a waterproof lining, and a machine washable bed. For a more affordable option, check out the Petsfit Expandable Pet Carrier instead. It's got lots of ventilation, and zip-out accordion sections that let you make the carrier a lot bigger—and more comfortable for your cat or dog—when you're not walking around with it.

What To Look For in an Airline-Approved Pet Carrier

Size guidelines.

The exterior measurements of the carrier you select must fall within the sizing guidelines provided by the airline provider for your flight. A typical limitation is that pet carriers need to be within 18 inches long, 11 inches wide, and 11 inches tall to fly in the cabin. Some airlines also have a maximum weight for your pet plus their carrier, but this varies between airlines, so we recommend using the guidelines provided by the airline you intend to fly with your pet most frequently. Here are the restrictions for some popular airlines:

  • Alaska Airlines
  • United Airlines
  • Southwest Airlines
  • American Airlines

Beyond requirements, the interior of your carrier should be spacious enough for your pet to stand (even temporarily), turn around, lie down, and adopt multiple positions.

Easy Carrying

If your pet carrier will be your personal item on a flight, then it's likely you'll also be juggling a piece of carry-on luggage. If you have a piece of wheeled luggage with a standard handle, then look for what's called a "trolley sleeve" when shopping for a carrier. A trolley sleeve is a tight band that attaches to your luggage handle, allowing your carrier to ride on top of your luggage.

While most carriers feature two handles, you may also want to seek out a carrier with a third, cross-body shoulder strap. This can make it easier to tote a carrier through airports, leaving your hands free for additional luggage. Many of our favorite carriers have a removable shoulder strap, which can be left off if you're trying to save a little weight.

Hard-Sided vs Soft-Sided

The carriers that made our list tend to fall in between hard and soft, offering structured yet flexible coverage for your pet that is just malleable enough to accommodate under the seat dimensions on an airplane. The softest of our selects, the tote-style Love Thy Beast Nylon Pet Carrier, has firm base which is important for your pet to feel steady while being carried. If you dog is too big to fly in cabin, then you definitely need a hard-sided kennel, like our Best for Cargo choice, the Gunner G1 Kennel .

We researched and selected 13 pet carriers for real-world testing on flights with a cat or dog.

Each traveling duo gathered insights and made notes about their shared experience, mainly traveling during the peak holiday season, and then provided their feedback within the following categories: size, design, portability, ease of cleaning, comfort, quality, and value.

Equipped with this first-hand information, we ranked and categorized our top picks to simplify your search for the perfect pet carrier to suit your needs, habits, and preferences.

There is no standard among airlines so you have to check the guidelines with your flight provider for each flight. All of the carriers on our list have been approved by at least one major airline provider based in the United States, including Delta, United Airlines, American Airlines, Southwest, or Jetblue, but each has its own pet policy.

Some airlines have a maximum weight of 20 pounds, which typically includes both your pet and their carrier. But each flight provider has their own pet policy.

It’s important to give your dog or cat as much space as possible but you can offer a few comforts. A small treat or toy to reinforce good behavior, and a small blanket can make the interior a little cozier. Introduce your pet to the carrier at least a few days before your flight to help them get accustomed to the space.

Introduce your pet to the carrier at least a few days before your flight to help them get accustomed to the space. Place a treat inside so they build a positive association with the carrier. Before you board, make sure your pet has the opportunity to pee–no one likes to be contained with a full bladder. Try to remain calm and upbeat, pets pick up on the emotions of their humans very quickly, so if you are relaxed, they are more likely to be relaxed. If anxiety is a reoccurring issue for your pet, speak with your veterinarian about the appropriate options for your cat or dog.

Do you ever wish your dog’s carrier wasn’t so, well, ugly? Or maybe that it was a little less awkward to carry?

Enter the Wild One Everyday Carrier . We were so stoked to try this out because this carrier is actually fashionable — and even Instagram-worthy!

We decided to give it our official Paw of Approval because it’s so much more than a good-looking bag. It’s also a super sturdy carrier that makes our pets feel safe and comfortable.

Keep reading to find out what else we loved about the Wild One Everyday Carrier.

What Is The Wild One Everyday Carrier?

The Wild One Everyday Carrier is an incredibly sleek pet carrier that looks like a stylish oversized purse.

According to Wild One’s website, it can carry dogs up to 20 pounds, and it has a hook inside that you can attach to your pup’s collar so he can’t wriggle out.

To make carrying your dog extra convenient, the Wild One Everyday Carrier’s designed with two different length straps — one for carrying him by hand and one for over-the-shoulder use.

Plus, it has four pockets, both on the inside and outside of the carrier, to hold your phone and wallet on top of everything your dog needs, too.

This bag’s also made with the environment in mind, since the knit exterior is made entirely of recycled materials (80 water bottles per bag, to be exact).

And to make cleanup a little easier, the inside mat is machine washable — though you’ll still have to hand-wash the bag itself.

The Wild One Everyday Carrier is available in three gorgeous colors: black , lilac and cocoa .

Our Reviewers

We picked three Dodo dogs who need to be carried fairly frequently to give the Wild One Everyday Carrier a try.

Does The Wild One Everyday Carrier Work?

The Wild One Everyday Carrier was perfect for carrying our dogs, especially when they needed a break from an extra-long walk.

“ I love to walk 3 to 3.5 miles in the morning, and so this bag has been perfect for mid-walk when she has reached her max — instead of carrying her in my arms, which I normally have to do, I brought my everyday carrier bag and it was perfect!” — Taylor C.

Our pup parents were thrilled that their BFFs were contained and comfortable while in the bag.

“ I would put her in, attach her to the collar hook, remove her leash and zip her in. She would then relax the rest of the walk while I got my steps in.” — Taylor C.

“Because of the higher sides of the Wild One bag, it definitely gives her more support to lean when she's sitting up.” — Jane Y.

What We Love

There’s so much we love about the Wild One Everyday Carrier.

It holds so much

Not only does this carrier have enough space for your 20-pound dog, but there are also plenty of pockets to hold your belongings, too, which is super convenient for our testers.

“This bag is so spacious — I am able to hold my keys, wallet, phone and her leash.” — Taylor C.

It’s durable

The Wild One Everyday Carrier feels like it’s made with high-quality materials, so our pet parents are confident it’ll last quite a while.

“It's like a dense woven knit with an interior layer, so it feels thick and sturdy.” — Jane Y.

“Overall the bag and its pieces feel well constructed and long lasting. It can stand up to daily use.” — Marissa D.

Our dogs feel safe in it

Because it’s so durable and sturdy, we’re convinced our pups feel nice and secure being carried around in this bag.

“I believe it gives her a sense of safety that she didn't always have when I would have to carry her in my arms in busy streets.” — Taylor C.

Dolly, who can get anxious when there’s too much going on around her, acts super relaxed when she’s inside the Wild One Everyday Carrier.

“It relieves Dolly of being a small dog on the ground amongst a bunch of chaos. I think being in the carrier allows her to relax while still being able to comfortably see everything that's going on.” — Marissa D.

It’s so convenient

This bag is super easy to use, too, since getting your pup in and out’s a breeze.

“All I have to do is pick her up and place her in the bag. I love how quick it is to just place her in and zip it up.” — Marissa D.

“It's really easy to pop her in the bag, and she can easily get out of it on her own when done, so that makes for a stress-free experience, too.” — Jane Y.

It’s eco-friendly

Our pet parents really appreciated that the Wild One Everyday Carrier’s designed with sustainability in mind.

“I love that it's made of recycled plastic, and that they list what everything is made of on the slip that comes in the packaging.” — Marissa D.

It’s gorgeous

Plus, it’s absolutely stunning to look at and will actually look like it’s part of your outfit, unlike other carriers that are very obviously, well, pet carriers.

“I was struck by the beautiful color and look of it when I opened the package.” — Jane Y.

wild one everyday carrier

The straps are versatile

Since there are two different length straps, you can carry your dog however is most comfortable for you.

“I was super happy with the two strap sizes since I've had a hard time finding a bag with the perfect strap length. The longer straps on the Wild One bag hit at a great spot, and I didn't realize what I was missing with the smaller hand straps until I tried them here. They're so convenient for a quick pickup if you need to put the bag down for a minute.” — Jane Y.

The Downsides

There are a couple small downsides to the Wild One Everyday Carrier.

It can be a lot of weight on one shoulder

Like with any shoulder bag, adding a bunch of weight — like, say, a 20-pound dog — can be a lot on your shoulder after a while.

“ It does cause some shoulder strain for me if I carry Lucy for too long, but that's with any shoulder bag with 20 pounds of weight in it, so not a specific negative for this brand, just something to keep in mind with any shoulder-strap bag.” — Jane Y.

One of our pet parents wished there was a little more padding on the shoulder straps to reduce any discomfort.

“ I DO think maybe an additional cushion pad on the shoulder straps would be beneficial for pets who are closer to the 20-pound weight or for just long-term use no matter the dog’s weight.” — Taylor C.

Sizing isn’t perfect

The Wild One Everyday Carrier is 21.5 inches long, 7.5 inches wide and 14.25 inches high.

All dogs are shaped differently, so even if they fit this bag’s weight limit, it might not be wide or deep enough to accommodate certain pups.

“Specifically for my dog, she doesn't fit perfectly in the bag despite being 16 pounds. She has long legs, so she can't really lay down comfortably in it, but it's still easy to carry the bag with her sitting in it instead of laying.” — Marissa D.

One pet parent also noticed it’s not super clear what the weight capacity actually is.

“The weight capacity limits are a bit confusing because the website says in one place it's recommended for use with dogs up to 16 pounds, and then elsewhere it says up to 20 pounds, and then the product tag says up to 25 pounds.” — Jane Y.

wild one everyday carrier

It’s definitely a splurge

The Wild One Everyday Carrier will set you back $150, which all of our reviewers agreed is pretty expensive for a pet carrier.

Is The Wild One Everyday Carrier Worth It?

The Wild One Everyday Carrier is as functional as it is stylish, which is always amazing.

Your pup will feel comfortable and secure, and you’ll both look great while you’re toting him around.

So, all our reviewers felt the higher price tag is justified, considering you’re getting such a fashionable, high-quality and durable product.

Despite the few downsides, all of our human testers plan to continue using the Wild One Everyday Carrier and will gladly recommend it to other pet parents.

How to find the best dog carrier

To find the best dog carrier, you need to first make sure you’re looking for the right size.

In order to figure out the right length, measure your pup from his neck to his tail and add a couple inches to give him some extra space.

To calculate the right height, measure from his shoulders to the ground.

I'm on a Plane at Least 12 Times a Year, and This Flight Attendant-loved Weekender Bag Always Comes With Me

It holds way more than you think.

Travel + Leisure / Tyler Roeland

In my years as a frequent flier and Italian travel writer, I’ve come to learn that a good carry-on bag can make or break your trip. I fly at least a dozen times a year to return home to Italy or to travel around the world in efforts to slake my wanderlust, and have tried several luggage brands and styles of carry-ons, from totes and backpacks to duffels and roller bags. Some have worked better than others, but none have really been able to fit everything that I need in one stylish, sturdy, and easy-to-reach place — that is, until I received the viral Béis Mini Weekender from for Christmas.

With so many glowing reviews, I was worried that it would turn out to be just another subpar, hyped-up product. But when I tested it out on my nine-hour international flight to Rome, I knew that it was the unicorn carry-on bag I’d been looking for.

Béis The Mini Weekender Bag

Made with durable, polyester canvas and trimmed with vegan leather for a touch of sophistication, the Mini Weekender is not only functional but also incredibly sleek. It has padded top handles that are comfortable and long enough to carry on your shoulders and an adjustable and removable shoulder and crossbody strap for a hands-free experience. However, as someone clocking in at just under 5-foot 1 inches, I found that it was easier and more comfortable to carry the bag on my shoulders rather than using the top handles.

The bag’s sturdy, wire frame opens wide and stays that way, allowing me to see everything and easily grab what I need without having to rummage blindly for it. Its interior is lined with smooth, water-resistant polyester that’s easy to wipe clean and came in handy when my water bottle leaked during transit; the water droplets only pearled onto its surface without seeping into the fabric, so it was quick and hassle-free to wipe them away with a paper towel.

I was surprised by how much this small yet mighty bag could fit, and I enjoyed having all of my things on me in one secure and easy-to-reach space during my long flight instead of above me in the overhead bin. Within the Mini Weekender Bag ’s main compartment, I was able to fit a 32-ounce HydroJug tumbler, a toiletry bag, multiple chargers, a 10-inch by 7-inch Kindle Fire, my passports, Apple AirPods, snacks, a wallet, keys, lip balms, a jewelry case, and sunglasses — all with plenty of room to spare.

Travel + Leisure / Asia London Palomba

Inside, the mini Béis weekender has a large zippered pocket and two small slip pockets, which are ideal for protecting your more valuable items while also providing easy access to others. I secured my AirPods, passports, wallet, and jewelry in the zippered pocket, while I placed my snacks, glasses, and lip balms in the slip pockets for quick access. But that’s not at all, it also comes with a padded laptop sleeve pocket with a hook-and-loop strap closure that can fit up to a 13-inch by 15-inch device, which I used to secure my Kindle Fire and my multi-passport holder. There’s also a keyring leash that I used to attach my house keys so I could keep track of them.

What's more, there's a stiff bottom shoe compartment that’s wrapped in vegan leather and studded with four small, metal feet so that it doesn’t sag against the floor. In it, I packed a large, thick corduroy tote bag and my chunky cloud slides . I’m excited to make better use of the shoe compartment during my summer travels, as its generous depth will fit plenty of sandals, flip-flops, and slippers.

I have the Mini Weekender in black, but the bag comes in nine different color combinations that range from playful to neutral, including Atlas pink, maple brown, and olive green. It has a small exterior pocket and a trolley pass-through sleeve that slides over your suitcase handles and makes traveling through the airport a seamless experience, especially if you're anything like me and overpack your bags to the point of bursting. The trolley passthrough is especially versatile, as it can be zippered up when not in use to double as another slender pocket.

The 16.2-inch by 8-inch by 16-inch Mini Weekender can support up to 30 pounds and is significantly smaller than the original 19-inch by 10-inch by 16-inch Béis Weekender Bag . Because of its compact size — and my short legs — I was able to fit it on its side under the seat in front of me, although it could be a bit of a tight fit depending on the airline and what's packed inside. For those blessed with longer limbs though, the Mini Weekender will easily fit in the overhead storage space should you use it as a carry-on.

But don’t just take my word for it. After all, the Mini Weekender is a viral product that's generating a lot of buzz on TikTok , and it's the subject of several rave reviews. On Béis, the bag has amassed nearly 3,000 five-star ratings from shoppers, including this one from a flight attendant, who said that “it’s the best bag for work” and that it’s lasted them four years, but for “those who don’t travel as often as I would, expect the bag to last longer than mine did.”

As someone who travels often and for great distances, and is overall a bit of a klutz, I’m looking forward to seeing how this bag holds up over the years. Another traveler said that the bag “is my favorite. It fits everything I need and more, while still being compact enough to fit under the seat on flights.”

The Béis Mini Weekender Bag is now my go-to carry-on, and I can’t wait to bring it on more of my travels. This compact yet ultra-spacious bag will also be my partner in crime on smaller, domestic trips or for low-key weekends away, so I know that I’ll get plenty of use out of it. It’s a game-changing product in the way that I travel, and I know it will be for you, too. Keep scrolling to check out other top-rated duffels and weekenders that are winning over travelers.

Porn Star Rocco Siffredi’s Netflix Bio-Series ‘Supersex’ Is More Tedious Than Sexy: TV Review

  • Porn Star Rocco Siffredi’s Netflix Bio-Series ‘Supersex’ Is More Tedious Than Sexy: TV Review 5 days ago

Supersex. (L to R) Alessandro Borghi as Rocco, Gaia Messerklinger as Moana in episode 104 of Supersex. Cr. Lucia Iuorio/Netflix © 2024

Loosely based on the experiences of real-life porn sensation Rocco Siffredi , known as the “Italian Stallion,” Netflix ’s “ Supersex ” isn’t actually very sexy at all. Instead, the seven-part series, created by Francesca Manieri, is a tale about family, masculinity and toxic bonds. While the show, which stars Alessandro Borghi in the lead role, has some interesting chapters, the surrealist elements — including some hallucinatory moments and the bizarre way some of the sex scenes are filmed — make it more than a biographical account. Instead, it’s an overly complex examination of relationships and the vices people indulge in to escape their emotional turmoil.

Series opener “Superpower” acts mainly as a coming-of-age story. Following Rocco’s retirement news, the show zips back to 1974. Ten-year-old Rocco Tano feels trapped in the impoverished rural town of Ortona and lost in the chaos of his family life. His mother is devoted to his mentally disabled brother Claudio, and Rocco lives in the shadow of his charismatic older half-brother, Tommaso (Adriano Giannini). Tommaso is Rocco’s North Star. He represents a type of freedom and hypermasculinity that appears out of reach for the men of Ortona. Tommaso also has the love of the town’s most stunning woman, Lucia (Jasmine Trinca), which only endears Rocco to him further.

In addition to examining Rocco’s family dynamic, “Supersex” zooms in on his fixation on sex, which begins at a very young age. The series unpacks his crush on Lucia and later his discovery of “Supersex,” a pornography magazine starring Gabriel Pontello. The euphoria from observing and later engaging in sex is a feeling Rocco chases across the next three decades. But his sex work comes at the expense of his mental health. It also destroys the romances and familial bonds he tries to form and maintain.

Despite a lifelong admiration of Tommaso’s machismo, his brother’s treatment of Lucia, who funds their lifestyle through her sex work on the streets of Paris, slowly shifts Rocco’s point of view. An invitation to a sex club awakens previously unknown desires. Becoming a porn star gives him financial security, but his inner turmoil stems from trying to live up to the expectations his family places on him.

“Supersex” dwells far too long on Rocco’s dysfunctional brotherhood with Tommaso, giving the toxic and exhausting connection unneeded exposition. Fewer episodes and less time spent on the self-destructive café manager would have kept the storyline squarely on Rocco’s psyche. Moreover, Manieri positions Lucia’s life as a counternarrative to Rocco’s. As with Rocco’s female co-stars, she isn’t allowed the same agency and status he obtains. Women are sexualized and then vilified for being sexual in the same breath. While Lucia eventually finds herself on a new path, it’s not without suffering and sacrifice, difficulties Rocco never contends with. The pair are an intriguing juxtaposition, but this mirroring gets muddled under their dark pull toward Tommaso. Similarly, Rocco’s enthusiasm for rough sex acts is never fully explored.

Still, “Supersex” makes some smart choices. Intercourse and other types of sex are showcased, of course, but these scenes aren’t gratuitous. Instead, they illustrate Rocco’s emotional state as he deals with loss and yearning or even demonstrate his self-worth.

The penultimate episode, “Resurrection of the Bodies,” is the standout and centers on Rocco’s return to Ortona amid his mother’s illness and one of the biggest highlights of his career, winning best European actor at the Hot d’Or Awards. In 53 minutes, Rocco confronts the effects of shame and how so-called family members react to him when he’s no longer playing by their rules.

Though Rocco’s story is solidly depicted, audiences hoping for a bio-series-type narrative won’t find it here. It’s also worth noting that Netflix offers a dubbed English version, but the show is best viewed in Italian with subtitles. Overall, “Supersex” isn’t just an examination of one man’s life and career but a look at the lives people create, however unconventional, when they dare to move through the world as their most authentic selves.

“Supersex” premieres March 6 on Netflix .

Home to the Kremlin, the Red Square, the colorful St. Basil's Cathedral, and many more famous landmarks, Moscow is a city like no other.

This Moscow itinerary will help you plan your trip and make the most of your time in Moscow. From the best places to see in Moscow to how to get around, this post has got you covered.

Important things to know when planning a trip to Moscow

The best time to plan a trip to Moscow is April-May and September-October . During these months temperatures are (generally) quite comfortable, though even in April there can be a bit of snow! The summer months are hot, both in regard to temperature as well as activities in the city. While it's a nice time to visit, it's also the busiest time of the year to visit Moscow. Hotel prices reflect this as well and summer definitely isn't a great time for budget travelers to visit Moscow. Winter in Moscow is cold, and I mean seriously cold (-15°C isn't rare). However, if you can withstand the subzero temperatures and freezing winds, it can be a magical time to visit. A snow-covered St. Basil’s Cathedral is a sight you will never forget. Keep in mind that days are short in winter and be sure to bring plenty of warm winter clothes!

The official currency in Russia is the Russian Ruble (₽ or RUB). Here you can find the current exchange rates, at the time of writing €1 is approximately 70RUB and $1 is around 62RUB.

Yes, you probably do. Getting a visa for Russia requires a bit of time and effort. You need to fill out several forms and provide a detailed travel itinerary and information about your accommodation. Also, you will need a Visa Support Letter which can be provided by your travel agency or your hotel. Depending on your nationality, there may be additional requirements, please refer to the information provided on the website of your country's Embassy in Russia.

While most of the things to see in Moscow listed in this post are within walking distance of each other, sometimes you will have to travel a bit further afield. The best way to get around in Moscow is by metro. It's cheap and efficient and a sightseeing activity in itself, because Moscow has the most beautiful metro stations in the world ! Among the most exquisitely decorated stations are Komsomolskaya, Novoslobodskaya, Mayakovskaya, Taganskaya, and Prospect Mira Station, but there are many more worthwhile stations to be found in the Moscow underground. You can purchase a single ticket from one of the ticket machines or get a rechargeable Troika Card when you plan on taking the metro several times. Read more details on how to use the Moscow metro here . If you prefer to get around by taxi, that's possible too. We used the Gett app to order a taxi (similar to Uber) to avoid confusion about our intended destination and having to negotiate in Russian. A convenient extra for families is the Gett Kids option, these cars are outfitted with a car seat.

The best things to do in Moscow

While you could easily spend a week in Moscow (or more), most of us, unfortunately, don't have that much time available.

This 3-day Moscow itinerary will guide you to the most popular and important places to visit in Moscow, as well as to some of the more unusual things to do in Moscow.

Below you can find the list of the Moscow sightseeing highlights included in this post.

The Red Square

Gum department store, st. basil's cathedral, lenin's mausoleum, the state historical museum, the kremlin, cathedral of christ the saviour.

  • The Bolshoi Theatre

Izmailovsky Market

Zaryadye park.

Moscow itinerary day 1

The Red Square Moscow Russia

There is no better place to start your first day in Moscow, than at the world-famous Red Square.

This square is considered the central square of Moscow, not just because all the major streets start here, but also because no matter where you look when standing on this square, there are historic buildings all around.

Starting with the impressive GUM store and going clockwise, there is the colorful Saint Basil's Cathedral, the Kremlin, Lenin's Mausoleum, the State Historical Museum, and the Kazan Cathedral.

However, before entering any of these Moscow must-see attractions, allow yourself a moment to take in the view and let it sink in that you're standing on historical grounds (and a UNESCO site).

The Red Square was the official address of the Soviet government and played an important part in history. Many military parades have been held (and are still being held) here. It's the place where protests have taken place, as well as high-profile concerts from famous international artists.

All in all, it's one of the places in Moscow you can't miss during your Moscow city trip!

Red Square with GUM department store in Moscow

Yulia from That's What She Had: it might seem like visiting a department store is not something you’d do on the first visit to Russia’s capital.

But GUM is not like any other department store and is well worth your time, if only for its unique architecture.

First of all, it’s located right on Red Square which makes it an easy stop on your Moscow trip itinerary. Second, GUM is not a simple mall, but an institution built in the late XIX century.

The abbreviation stands for  Glavniy Universalniy Magazin or Main Universal Store. Its impressive facade extends for over 240 meters along the eastern side of Red Square.

Inside you’ll find a beautiful glass ceiling supported by a metal framework, not unlike the ones found in the old train stations of Great Britain.

wild one travel bag

While shopping in GUM will cost you an arm and a leg, there’s one reason why tourists and locals come here anyways:  traditional Russian food  at Stolovaya #57. Stolovaya is Russian for canteen and this is where you can get your  pelmeni , borsch , and  pirozhki  fix!

Afterward, don’t forget to get the famous  plombir  ice cream in one of the kiosks on the ground floor.

Saint Basil's Cathedral Moscow

Saint Basil's Cathedral with its colorful domes is easily recognizable and one of the most popular Moscow tourist attractions. The building, built on orders from Ivan the Terrible, was completed in 1561 to commemorate the victory over Kazan and Astrakhan.

Until the construction of Ivan the Great Bell Tower (which can be found within the walls of the Kremlin), it was the tallest building in Moscow.

The design of St. Basil's Cathedral is truly unique; it's shaped like the flame of a bonfire and not one building in a similar style can be found in the whole of Russia.

A legend tells the story of how Ivan the Terrible had the architects of the Cathedral blinded so they could never build anything comparable.

This is a myth, however, but the fact remains that Saint Basil's Cathedral is one of a kind and it's not surprising it has become the symbol of Russia.

Lenin Mausoleum Moscow Russia

Wendy from The Nomadic Vegan: Lenin Mausoleum is hard to miss. It's a stepped-pyramid construction that sits right at the base of the Kremlin walls on the western side of Red Square.

Entrance is free but note that opening hours are quite limited, with visiting hours lasting only from 10 am to 1 pm on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday.

If seeing Lenin's embalmed body is important to you, be sure to take this into account when planning your itinerary in Moscow.

One of my  top tips for travelers to Russia  is to arrive early, well before the mausoleum opens, as the queue is usually quite long. However, usually, the queue does move pretty quickly.

This is especially true now that they have lifted the ban on bags and cameras.

It used to be that all cameras, smartphones, and bags of any size had to be checked at a left-luggage office nearby. But now you can bring a small handbag or backpack as well as your camera and phone.

Photography inside the mausoleum is still strictly forbidden, but you are allowed to take photos of the graves of various other important Russian figures that line the path leading to the mausoleum.

Once you finally enter the mausoleum, the atmosphere is surprisingly peaceful and uncrowded. It doesn't feel nearly as rushed as when visiting Mao Ze Dong's tomb in Beijing or Ho Chi Minh's body in Hanoi , for example.

The illumination of the body is very well done and would make for superb photography if it wasn't forbidden. As an added bonus, just after you exit, you'll see the grave of Joseph Stalin outside.

State Historical Museum Moscow

Rai from A Rai Of Light: the imposing crimson building at the northern end of the Red Square is the State Historical Museum.

By decree of Alexander III, the museum was built with the support of Russian historians, philosophers, and artists. The red brick building, dating from 1875, was designed in the Russian revival style by Vladimir Shervud.

The National Museum of Russia houses a collection of over four million items, devoted to the history of the country's ancient and imperial period.

The exhibitions include many items previously owned by members of the Romanov dynasty, such as documents, artwork, personal items, furnishings, and decorations from the palace interiors.

Another exhibit features relics of the prehistoric tribes that once inhabited this region.

Notable items include ancient manuscripts, birch-bark scrolls, a longboat excavated from the banks of the Volga River, and the largest coin collection in Russia, sourced from the museums in St Petersburg .

The State Historical Museum is open daily from 10 am to 6 pm. The entrance fee is 700₽ per adult.

Moscow itinerary day 2

Cathedral Square inside the Kremlin

When listing the best Moscow things to do, one cannot miss the Kremlin! The Kremlin houses the current seat of power in Russia and has done so for several decades.

Within its walls, the offices of the Russian Government can be found. During Soviet rule, the Kremlin was where all the important decisions were made but its history goes back for many centuries.

The first mention of the Kremlin in history books was in 1147, however, the current citadel dates from the 16th century.

The Kremlin is one of the major fortifications found in Europe, with walls that are up to 6.5 meters thick and 19 meters high in particular sections.

Inside the complex, there are many government buildings, however, these aren't accessible to the public.

Around Cathedral Square you'll find (as the name suggests) many churches and cathedrals, such as the Cathedral of the Archangel, Annunciation Cathedral, the Church of Laying Our Lady's Holy Robe, and Ivan the Great Bell-Tower.

While Cathedral Square is definitely worth visiting, the highlight of the Kremlin is a visit to the Armoury.

Inside you can find an impressive collection of Faberge eggs, beautiful dresses worn by Catherine the Great, intricately decorated thrones used by the Tsars, and much more. Unfortunately, photography is forbidden inside the Armoury.

Practical information about visiting the Kremlin

In order to visit both Cathedral Square and the Armoury, you will have to buy two separate tickets. A ticket to Cathedral Square costs 700₽ and a ticket to the Armoury is 1000₽. Prices mentioned are for adults, children below 16 years old are free.

Tickets can be bought at the ticket office onsite on the same day, however, there's no guarantee tickets will be available, especially during peak season.

Conveniently, tickets can be bought online as well, which is highly advisable if you want to make sure you'll be able to visit the Kremlin during your city trip to Moscow.

How much time to spend at the Kremlin

Be sure to allow plenty of time to explore the Kremlin, at least half a day but it's easy to spend more time as there is so much to see.

Please note there isn't any food sold inside the Kremlin, so bring a snack and enough water (especially in summer when it can get pretty hot).

Luggage storage

Backpacks aren't allowed inside the Kremlin, they can be stored (for free) in the cloakroom, but you can bring your camera and a small purse.

We could also take our Babyzen Yoyo stroller inside, which was very convenient as our 10-month-old son could take a nap while we explored the sights.

Cathedral of Christ the Saviour Moscow

After the original Cathedral of Christ the Saviour was demolished by Stalin in 1931, a new version was completed in 2000.

The imposing building is the tallest Orthodox Christian church in the world (103 meters high), and is beautiful on the outside as well as on the inside.

Visiting the Cathedral is free of charge and it's open any day of the week from 10 am to 5 pm (except on Mondays when the opening hours are 1 to 5 pm).

When visiting the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour it's important to dress appropriately. For men, this means no shorts or tank tops.

Women can't enter with mini skirts or shorts, strap tops, or anything too revealing. Also, women are advised to cover their heads with a scarf as a sign of respect.

Inside the Cathedral photography isn't allowed, but believe me when I say there is plenty to see. There are beautiful frescoes, colorful icons, impressive statues, and other vivid decorations.

For a beautiful view over Moscow, walk up the stairs to the 40-meter high observation deck (entrance fee 400₽).

Visit Gorky Park

Gorky Park ice skating Moscow Russia

Helen from Holidays from Hels : Gorky Park, named after the Soviet writer Maxim Gorky, has recently undergone extensive regeneration to become Moscow's central leisure hub for young Muscovites.

Every day of the week you can find many Moscow residents strolling along the banks of the river in the summer, hiring bikes, picnicking on the grass, or dining at one of the many restaurants.

Open-air cinemas, petanque, and ping pong are all on offer. Not to be missed is the iconic white stone entranceway and museum, complete with columns carved with Soviet hammers and sickles.

In winter, look out for the ducks waddling across the frozen Moskva River, and watch boats attempting to navigate through the cracked ice. However, the real winter highlight is to try ice skating on one of the biggest rinks in Europe!

Ice skating in Gorky Park

The park’s maze of pedestrian pathways is transformed into one huge skating rink, which can play host to up to four thousand skaters.

Not surprisingly, Russians are talented ice skaters and there is a good chance you will find yourself next to a pirouetting ballerina.

Handily, you will find you will already be wearing most of what you need – gloves, hat, scarf, and thick socks and you can hire skates on-site. Lockers are included in the price if you don’t fancy skating with your day pack.

Disco tunes fill the air, and the whole arena is backlit in spectacular neon lights. Rest your weary legs and warm up at one of the cafes dotted along the frozen pathways, with the added bonus of not having to take off your skates.

Opening times

The rink is open from 10 am until 11 pm on weekdays and until midnight at weekends but closes between 3 and 5 pm. Like most attractions in Moscow, the rink is closed on Mondays.

The prices range from 350-650₽ and go up in the evening, which is the best time for the light show. Arriving at 5 pm, just as the rink opens for the evening session will give you time to find your ice legs before it fills up with more confident skaters.

Whilst waiting for the rink to open, try out the nearby tubing track where you can shoot down a snowy hill on an inflatable ring repeatedly for a very enjoyable half an hour!

How to get to Gorky Park by metro

The nearest metro is Park Kultury Station, on the other side of the river. As always, check out in advance what this looks like in the Russian Alphabet so you know when to get off!

Bolshoi Theatre

Bolshoi Theater Moscow

James Ian at Travel Collecting : one of the best places to go in Moscow is the famous Bolshoi Theater, located only a short walk from Red square. Bolshoy means big in Russian, and the theatre is not only big but also beautiful.

There are two ways to see the theater: on a guided tour or by watching a performance .

Take a guided tour

  • English tours are held on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays at 11:30 am. Tickets for these tours can be bought (on the same day) at the ticket office located in the Historic building of the theatre (door #12).
  • A ticket costs 2000₽ per person, tours last one hour, and the number of people on a tour is limited to a maximum of 20. The tour takes you inside the theater and to the historic main stage.

Watch a performance

My favorite way to see the theater, though, is to enjoy a performance and experience the theater as a patron.

The entrance is a little underwhelming when you first arrive, the street lobby is small and quite plain and you will be immediately directed up to your floor.

There are helpful attendants on each floor to guide you to the correct door. Arrive a little early and head up to the Grand Salon on the top floor where you can enjoy a glass of champagne while people-watching (Russians dress up for the theater).

Then head to your seat and take in the stunning theater before enjoying the famous Bolshoi Ballet or another performance.

Be sure to book a show at the historic stage, there is a modern stage as well but that isn't nearly as much fun.

Moscow itinerary day 3

Izmailovsky Market Moscow

Karen from WanderlustingK : one of the most interesting Moscow places to visit is the Izmailovsky Market .

This flea market and tourist attraction a bit outside of the tourist center is a recreation of a Tzar’s Palace, known as a Kremlin, produced in a colorful 16th-century style.

The market is filled with tiny stalls that sell everything from snacks to kitsch to authentic items from Soviet times such as hats, pins, and other pieces of memorabilia.

You'll also find authentic antiques such as vases, paintings, and other religious items if you're looking to splurge within the interior parts of the market.

Negotiating in English is not always possible as many vendors only speak Russian, so be sure to practice your Russian numbers and see how well you can do with haggling.

It's important to carry cash when you visit given that many vendors do not accept cards. We ended up purchasing a series of hats at the market, along with a beautiful hot tea glass with a metal holder with a typical Russian scene.

Elsewhere in the market, you’ll also find a few tourist shops that sell typical Russian products. It takes a few hours to see the market in full, so arrive early as the best items go quickly!

Hallway in Bunker 42 Moscow

Lindsey from Have Clothes, Will Travel : Bunker-42 was once a top-secret, Soviet military complex. Stalin commissioned its construction after the United States succeeded in creating a nuclear bomb.

An impressive 65 meters (or about 213 feet) underground, was the desired depth to protect Russia’s top officials from a nuclear attack.

Bunker 42 became operational in 1954. Fortunately, it was never needed for its true purpose, and instead it was used as the command center of strategic bombers for nearly 30 years.

Nowadays it's a museum dedicated to the Cold War and visiting is a truly unique experience!

You will need to join a tour in order to see the museum. You can call ahead to book your tour (the number is: +7 499 703-44-55), there are several English tours throughout the day that are held at 13:30, 16:30, and 18:30 (the price is 2200₽).

On Mondays, there is an extra tour at 17:30, which lasts an additional 30 minutes and costs 2800₽ per person. There is also the option to book a private tour. However, I am unsure of the price for this.

You will have to wait until exactly 15 minutes before your tour begins before you'll be admitted inside. After paying for your tickets and a quick restroom stop you will descend 65 meters underground…

Another option for visiting Bunker-42, if you would rather not do the tour, is to visit the restaurant inside Bunker-42. Actually, I highly recommend visiting the restaurant before or after a tour as well!

While the food is not that great, it’s worth visiting for a drink. The restaurant is also located within the bunker and is decorated in the old Soviet style.

From time to time there will be live performances and visiting Bunker 42 is definitely an experience worth having while in Moscow! After all, how many people can say they've had a drink in a top-secret Soviet military bunker?

If you’re visiting Moscow during peak season (June-July-August), it would be worth making a reservation, to avoid having to wait. Otherwise, I would not say you need to worry about a reservation at the restaurant.

Bunker-42 is a short cab ride away from Red Square (10-15 minutes). But I recommend taking the metro to get there. The closest station is Taganskaya, which is a beautiful metro station very much worth visiting.

Pedestrian boardwalk in Park Zaryad'ye (also called Zaryadye Park)

Park Zaryad'ye or Zaryadye Park is a lovely place for a stroll and a nice place to relax after a day of sightseeing in Moscow, especially when exploring Moscow with kids.

There are many things to see and do in this park, but I recommend starting your visit at The River Overlook , a 70-meter-long boardwalk with beautiful views over the river and the Kremlin.

Other interesting places to visit in Zaryadye Park are the Ice Cave, The Museum of Nature, and The Glass Crust. But most importantly, do as the Muscovites do and find yourself a nice place in the park to sit down and relax.

Enjoy the view, do some people-watching, and take a moment to think back about all the Moscow top sights you've seen in the past couple of days.

View from Zaryadye Park Moscow

Where to stay in Moscow

There is a huge amount of hotels in Moscow, ranging from budget hostels to exquisite 5-star hotels. Below you can find three well-reviewed Moscow hotels (rating of 8.5+ on Agoda and  Booking ).

3-star hotel in Moscow: MIRROS Hotel Mokhovaya

wild one travel bag

This 3-star hotel is one of the best budget Moscow hotels and is all about location! From the hotel, it's just a 10-minute walk to the Kremlin and only 600 meters to the Christ the Savior Cathedral.

Set in a historic 19th-century mansion, the hotel features classic rooms with ensuite bathrooms.

The staff is friendly and there is a metro station nearby (Borovitskaya), making it easy to get to the Moscow attractions a bit further afield.

Modern hotel in Moscow: Barin Residence Myasnitskaya

wild one travel bag

The Barin Residence Myasnitskaya is a newly built hotel, located about 1.2km from the Red Square (about a 15-20 minute walk).

The rooms and bathrooms are very modern and clean, the beds are comfortable and room service is available. This hotel is an excellent choice for travelers looking for a nice hotel without a hefty price tag.

Luxury hotel in Moscow: Hotel National Moscow

wild one travel bag

Hotel National is potentially the best Moscow hotel. It's a gorgeous 5-star hotel located just a stone's throw away from the Bolshoi Theater, the Red Square, and the Kremlin.

The building was designed by architect Alexander Ivanov and completed in 1903 and has been welcoming international travelers ever since.

With its imperial architecture, luxury design, and charming classic rooms (some with a view of the Kremlin!), the Hotel National is a unique property.

Furthermore, you can enjoy an indoor pool, sauna, and fitness center as well as the well-reviewed Beluga restaurant that serves both Russian and European dishes.

While this hotel doesn't come cheap, your stay at the Hotel National will make your trip to Moscow an unforgettable experience.
