Monster Hunter World Tailraider Safari Guide
The Tailraider Safari missions become available as you progress through the story. You can either unlock it at the Research Base or at your private room, once you have progressed far enough in the story. Once unlocked you can use either location to send Palico’s out on a safari to gather materials.
Although you can start using this feature immediately, if you want to maximize benefits you need to build your crew. The Palico that are chosen to go on your Tailraider Safari are randomized. They are taken from a pool that includes premade Palico, as well as your Squad mates and Guild Cards you have.

There are some other very rare items. This is currently the only known method of getting the Sinister Cloth , which makes an incredible armor set.

MHW: Trailraider
- View history
Trailraider is a mechanic introduced in Monster Hunter: World that governs additional NPC allies the player can get on the field aside from their Palico. Trailraiders are meant as a feature to help players that are playing by themselves; the presences of another player would automatically remove employed Trailraiders.
Unlike previous generations where players possess the ability to customize the load-out and attributes of their secondary back up, Trailraiders are acquired in the field with their availability and types being very dependent on luck and circumstances. Their effectiveness are also loosely governed by the Unity level.

Unlocking [ ]
Trailraiders are divided into different factions, each needing to be unlocked through a specific "Cultural Exchange" Bounty that involves a series of side activities leading up to an alliance to a certain Lynian tribe within the locales of New World. There are 5 Cultural Exchange in the base game, with an additional 1 in Iceborne. Unlocking these Trailraiders overlaps with acquisition of their respective Palico gear. Each Cultural Exchange Bounties can be triggered by following clues given by the Lynian Researcher will out on an Expedition is the respective map.
Recruitment [ ]
There are two Trairaider slots, one for Lynian and one for a Small Monster, making a total of 2 Trailraider can be recruited at a time.
To recruit a Trailraider back up, the player's Palico must be taken along with them as they are the one recruiting them on the field. The Palico would have to be brought close to the desired recruit for it to automatically recruit said Trailraider; in the case of monsters, the Palico will recruit at random from the available monsters. Monsters that have been recruited by your Palico will have its health restored to full and is immune to attack during recruitment animation.
Lynian potential recruits can be found across predetermined areas in each locale and they are generated randomly among Lynian trailraiders that players have unlocked with the exception of clan/tribe home bases in which they will always spawn the same Lynian Trailraider groups. Any monster of legitimate Trailraider species can be recruited with the exception of Jagras that are under the influence of Leshen / Ancient Leshen .
Trailraider cannot be dismissed normally. They must either have their health bar depleted completely or forced to dismiss by leaving your Palico behind at camp. Monster Trailraiders have places off-limits to them and will automatically dismiss themselves should you enters such areas or the player enter the basecamp tent.
In Iceborne , player can acquire the Boaboa Signal Palico Gadget, which occupy its own slot separate from other 6 gadgets. When used, the gadget will summon one random Lynian and Small Monster Trailraider allowed in that locale (or just either one should players already have the other).
Unity Level [ ]
Unity level is the barometer of kinship between your Palico and the allied Trailraider factions. They translate into gameplay as level effectiveness for said Trailraiders; having higher Unity level brings bonuses such as higher health, higher damage output and more versatile set of abilities varied among Trailraider factions. Unity Level can be raised by bringing Trailraider from said faction on activities in the field; hunting monsters yield the most increase in the Unity Bar.
Each Lynian Tribe/Clan has their own Unity Level, while all Small Monsters share a Unity level. Unity level is capped at level 5 in the base game and at 10 in Iceborne .
Lynian Trailraider [ ]
Lynian Trailraiders generally function like one's own Palico. They cannot be directly commanded and will act on their own accord in battle. Lynian Trailraiders can follow players anywhere and will wait for players in camp areas.
Local Lynians [ ]
The resident Lynians of New World's locale have a fixed set of ability based on their clan/tribe, but their preferences and strength might be denoted by the title their hold. The following is the set of abilities they're known to use based on their factions:
Other Palico [ ]
At times, Palicos of other players that one has the Guild Card of will appear in the field or answer the Boaboa Signal in place of local New World Lynians. The advantage and disadvantage of having another player's Palico as assistance is that these Palicos are only as strong as their owner makes them to be. This means, players can either be as fortunate as to find a well-equipped Palico with load-out matching the necessity of the quest at hand, or being so unlucky as to get a severely underpowered assistance from a Low Rank player's Palico in a Master Rank quest.
Additional Features [ ]
Lynian trap [ ].
In select areas of locales, random set of Lynians might be waiting to assist you in toppling down large monsters. These assistance comes in 3 types:
- Grimalkyne Vine Trap: Available once the player reaches Unity level of 3 with any Grimalkyne clan and is denoted by a green paw sign on the map. Activates when a mounted monster comes near the trap conductor. A squad of Grimalkyne will strangle the monster with vines, leaving bound for several seconds before getting toppled and remain vulnerable afterward. This trap give the player a considerable window of time to either inflict damage to the monster or do other things. This trap does not work against Elder Dragons.
- Gajalaka Shellshock: Available after level 3 Unity with the Gajalaka, or by completing the Gajalaka side objective in the Witcher 3 collaboration Special Assignment; denoted by a red paw sign on the map. Bringing a monster near the trap conductor will have it blasted down by a powerful initial shot from which a group of Gajalaka will fire a relentless barrage of explosives at the downed monster.
- Boaboa Harpoon: Available after level 3 Unity with the Boaboa and denoted by a brown paw sign on the map. This trap functions the same as Gajalaka Shellshock, but instead have a group of Boaboa hurling a barrage of poisoned spear and the downed monster.
The type of Lynian Trap is not depended on the locale. Once the player have unlocked the trap function, they can appear in any locales.
Trailraider Safari [ ]
Trailraider Safari is a passive loot generator feature in Astera , Research Base , Seliana where players send out a team of Lynians to embark on safaris in locales in which the result are affected by factors such as the selected locale, expected obstacles and the Safari team proficiency in 3 fields. Overall Unity level with various Trailraider factions will affect the overall quality of Safari team options that players get.
Pawswap and Treasure Hunt [ ]
Pawswap is a feature available in a Lynian Tribe home base after players have raised their Unity level with said tribe to a certain point. This feature allows players to trade with 3 potential buyer; players initiate the trade by offering an item from their current Inventory. Each Lynian have different preferences that can be denoted from their expression. Exchanging an item with a Lynian that really desire it will yield better rewards and raise the Unity level more.
Trade enough with a tribe, and they will give clue to a treasure of that locale that players can collect. The clue for this treasure is recorded in the Hunter's Notes.
Monster Trailraiders [ ]
Monster Trailraiders fight as they would as a regular monster, only with increased aggression and improved health pool. Monster Trailraiders cannot follow players to camp and would automatically dismiss themselves should players fast travel to camps.
In combat, Monster Trailraiders often serve as tanks, absorbing a lot of damage while dealing a decent amount themselves whilst the Lynians compensate with tricks and tools to sabotage the monster or help the player. Girros is the only Trailraider monster to inflict a Status Effect.
With high enough Unity level, the player's Palico might engage in a cavalry stance where the Palico hops on the Monster Trailraider back and they fight as a unison for a limited time. In this stance, both parties benefit from reduced damage reaction and higher damage output.
It should be noted that monster Trailraiders cannot be normally found when an Elder Dragon is present in the locale. They also take damage from enviromental traps as with all monsters. Some monsters, like Seething Bazelgeuse and Savage Deviljho , deal extremely high damage to other monsters that monster Trailraiders can easily die from their attacks.
In Iceborne players have access to Raider Rides in which they can call upon a separate Trailraider monster that they can use as a transportation method around the map. These particular Trailraider monsters do not fight and appear bigger than their brethren. They cannot be controlled directly and instead automatically seek paths to destinations and targets that players assign on the map; they cannot seek path to locations that are off limits for Trailraider monsters.

How to Get Every Palico Gadget - Tailraiders, and Gajalaka Guide
Palicos are your felyne friends in Monster Hunter World that aid you on your hunts. This page covers everything you need to know about Palicos, including how to unlock their coveted Palico Gadgets, like the Plunderblade.
You can customize your own Palico at the start of Monster Hunter World. They will follow you on hunts and attack monsters while providing support by unleashing Palico gadgets, ranging from healh-boosting vigorwasp spray to monster-stunning flash bombs.
Palico Gadgets
Palico Gadgets are items your Palico can equip that help you out on hunts! Here's a list of every gadget and how to get them.
Vigorwasp Spray
This is the very first Palico Gadget you get in Monster Hunter World. The Vigorwasp Spray lets your Palico:
- Deliver Vigorwasp Spray to you
- Spawn Vigorwasp Spray stations
At Level 5, you can manually summon your Palico, and at Level 10, you can manually instruct your Palico to place a station. As your Palico's proficiency with this Gadget raises, the amount you will heal rises as well.
Flashfly Cage
The Flashfly Cage lets your Palico spawn Flashflys when fighting large monsters.
- At Level 5, your Palico will place shock traps
- At Level 10, you can manually instruct your Palico to place traps
How to Get the Flashfly Cage
You will have to befriend the Bugtrapper Tribe in the Ancient Forest .
- 1. First, you will have to find and collect the Grimalkyne's doodles around the Ancient Forest .
- 2. Once the gauge is filled, start a solo expedition in camp 17 and head to the Bugtrapper tribe's camp, marked on the map below. You'll have to swing across a few vines to get there.
It's possible you'll also just see a Bugtrapper after collecting all of the necessary doodles, in which case you can simply follow it back to the Grimalkyne hideout.
- 3. Speak to the Grimalkynes and they will give you the Flashfly Cage and teach your Palico to speak to a local Small Monster.
Tailraider Monster Recruited:
Shieldspire
The Shieldspire is a large shield your Palico can use to defend against attacks, making your Palico a sort of tank for your team.
- At Level 6, you can command your Palico to provoke a monster.
- At Level 10, you can command your Palico to attack with the shield, which can stun large monsters.
How to Unlock the Shieldspire
You will have to find and befriend the Protectors tribe in the Wildspire Waste to earn the Shieldspire.
- 1. Leave on an expedition to the Wildspire Waste , and head to the Grimalkyne's camp, marked on the map below. It's down a hole!
- 2. Speak to the Grimalkynes. They'll send you on a sidequest to find three of their tribe-members around the Wildspire Waste.
- 3. The Grimalkynes will be marked on your map, so simply mark them with R3 - your scoutflies will take you right to them! Their locations are always different, so we can't provide a map for you for this one.
- 4. Use the capture net (you can find it in your item menu) the capture the Grimalkynes. Using the Ghillie Mantle to sneak will be helpful.
- 5. Once you've captured all three, return to the Protector's camp and speak to them. They'll give you the Shieldspire.
Coral Orchestra
The Coral Orchestra is basically a Palico-sized Hunting Horn . It grants random buffs which can be a great help on hunts! The more proficient your Palico, the more potent the buffs will be.
- At level 6, you can command your Palico to play the horn.(Coral Cheerhorn - one random buff.)
- At level 10, you can command your Palico to play the drum (Coral Cheerbongo - one random buff.)
How to Unlock Coral Orchestra
To get the Coral Orchestra Palico Gadget, you'll have to befriend the Troupers Grimalkyne tribe in the Coral Highlands.
- 1. Head to area 10, marked on the map below.
- 2. Fight and defeat the Tailraiders.
- 3. Follow the Grimalkyne back to their camp, which will now be marked on the map for you. Speak to the Troupers - they'll give you a quest to slay two Tzitzi-Ya-Ku .
- 4. Complete the quest to trigger a cutscene with the Troupers, who will give you the Coral Orchestra.
Tailraider Monster Recruited"
Plunderblade
The Plunderblade is an especially useful Palico Gadget for when farming large monsters for materials. It lets your Palico swipe materials straight of the monster's back, and causes more material to drop onto the ground for you to pick up.
- At level 6, you can command your Palico to use the Plunderblade.
- At Level 10, you can command your Palico to use the Palarang.
You should always command your Palico to use these, as it will still steal stuff on its own at the same pace.
How to Unlock the Plunderblade
This video shows you exactly what you need to do to unlock this especially useful gadget, which requires you to befriend the Plunderers of the Rotten Vale , but here's a basic rundown:
- 1. Make sure you have Raw Meat in your item pouch.
- 2. Head to an expedition to the Rotten Vale and go to Area 13. The following only triggered for us when the Lynian Researcher was there, but others say his appearance isn't necessary.
- 3. Wait for Odogaron to drag a Legiana corpse to this area. Do not engage the Odogaron .
- 4. A Grimalkyne should appear to inspect the Legiana corpse.
- 5. Follow the Grimalkyne back to the Plunderer's hideout. Drop a piece of raw meat on the ground and hide.
- 6. Once the Grimalkyne appears with its friends, your Palico will comment it's time to say hello. Approach and speak to the Grimalkynes.
They will give you the Plunderblade as thanks for the food.
This is an especially helpful Tailraider, as these monsters can paralyze foes.
Meowlotov Cocktail
The Meowlotov Cocktail lets your Palico throw bombs at monsters, much like the Gajalaka you'll encounter on high rank quests.
How to Unlock the Meowlotov Cocktail
You'll have to befriend the Gajalaka - NOT the Grimalkyne - in Elder's Recess to unlcok this Gadget.
- 1. Obtain every other Palico Gadget available.
- 2. Speak to the Lynian Researcher near the Ecological Research Center in Astera to obtain a quest to find 10 Gajalaka doodles.
- 3. You can find Gajalaka Doodles in every location where Gajalaka spawn, but once you've collected a doodle, they will not respawn. Check your map for Small Monsters to find them easily. You must collect 10 unique doodles.
- 4.Once you have collected them all, head back to the Lynian Researcher in Astera to get unlock the next task: you'll have to show the way to the Gajalaka for the researcher.
- 5. Make sure you have the Ghillie Mantle equipped.
- 6. Start an expedition to Elder's Recess and head to where the Lynian Researcher is in area 8. Make sure it's nighttime! If it isn't, you'll have to wait, or can try leaving and coming back. (We had to wait - the Monster Hunter day/night cycle is unclear.)
- 7. Put on the Ghillie Mantle and sneak past the Gajalaka.
There, the Gajalaka will approach you and gift you the Meowlotov Cocktail Palico Gadget.

Monster Hunter: World – Send Your Palicoes on a Tailraider Safari
Once you’ve unlocked the Rotten Vale region, you’ll be able to send teams of Palicoes from your squad mates and friends on Tailraider Safaris. They’ll be able to collect valuable items for you while you’re otherwise engaged.
The Palico in Monster Hunter: World is not only your hunter’s steadfast companion, but it actually has a life of its own. Not only can you sometimes stumble across your friend’s Palicoes in the wild, but you can also send them out as a group to gather up things for you while you sleep. Or while you hunt, or capture monsters , or enhance your pet collection . Whatever you’re doing, your friends’ Palico squads can head out on what Capcom calls Tailraider Safaris.
How to Deploy a Tailraider Safari
Before you can deploy your friends Palicoes on Tailraider Safaris, you’ll have to progress to a certain place in the story. Shortly after reaching the Rotten Vale region, the Lynian Expert in the Research Base will tell you about Tailraider Safaris. These excursions into the regions of the world are done by Palicoes from hunters in your squad, hunters whose guild cards you’ve received, or players you’ve recently played with. Depending on the type of safari you embark on, you will have to spend Research Points to get started.
Each safari is made up of three Palicoes with different skill sets. You choose a destination for the group and it is advised that you match up the Palicoes skills with the type of gathering they will be doing. Keep an eye on the difficulty of each route’s section as denoted by the stars. The better your safari is matched up to the route, the better the rewards they will bring back.
Tailraider Safari Rewards
When your Palico team returns from the Tailraider Safari, you’ll be notified via a popup in the game. You can then head to your Housekeeper and choose the Tailraider Safari menu. The results of the excursion will be shown in the Rewards Box on the left and you can choose to claim or sell the items. Afterwards, you can dispatch another group of Palicoes on a Tailraider Safari.
This concept is a great way to supplement your item box and get more materials on a regular basis from your Palicoes. Of course, you’ll want to keep an eye on your Research Points so you don’t blow them all on these Tailraider Safaris. For more guides on where to find items and how to optimize your game experience, visit our Monster Hunter: World Guide Hub.

Monster Hunter Iceborne: How to Get Tailraider Signal Skill (Hoarfrost Reach)
September 5, 2019 by DK 4 Comments
The Monster Hunter World Iceborne expansion adds a new Palico gadget, called the Tailraider Signal skill. Hoarfrost Reach, the new region in MHW: Iceborne not only delivers a bunch of new monsters, but also a new grimalkyne faction called the Boaboa. Just as every other region, this faction has its own unique skill you can unlock for your own Palico!
What Tailraider Signal Skill does
It allows you to place a smoke signal to call a grimalkyne (the little cats that belong to the clans on each map). This gadget is extremely useful when leveling up the grimalkyne factions in each region for the Treasures and Lynian Research Requests . So basically it helps with collectibles that are linked to trophies and achievements and it’s wise to get this new skill as early as possible.
How to Unlock Tailraider Signal Skill
Step 1: In order to unlock the new tribe of Boaboa as your grimalkynes helpers you will first have to unlock all the other palico gagdets from the main game: Palico Gadgets Guide .
Step 2: Once all the other gadgets are unlocked, talk to the Lynian Researcher in Seliana, he will then tell you about the Boaboa tribe in Hoarfrost Reach (you must also have done the third story assignment on Master Rank where you kill Viper Tobi-Kadachi, otherwise the quest can’t show up). Travel there (Camp 1) and the Lynian Researcher should be near the camp. Talk to him again and he will tell you more about the Boaboa. He lets you know, they are hunters and will only acknowledge you as a hunter when you slay a large monster in front of them.
Step 3: Head into the area north of the camp and you will notice small furry fellas with harpoons following you all the time. When they do, hunt a large monster in front of them. Once the monster is killed they will have you follow them into area 2 and grabbing a drake with your hook. This will take you to area 17 and through a small cave into their lair. This step should be done solo, as in co-op they reportedly don’t observe the hunt and it may not work.
Step 4: Their leader will give you an optional quest for hunting a Tempered Beotodus. The Boaboa will accompany you during the hunt and once the optional quest is finished you will unlock a new Palico Gadget. The Tailraider Signal will let you place a smoke signal to call a grimalkyne helper to your party. Do note that this takes up one of your party slots so play solo to call the helper (in co-op your 4 party slots would be full already).
That’s all there is to unlocking Iceborne’s new skill gadget, enjoy. If you want to make good use of it, refer to the Treasures Guide and the Lynian Research Guide .
For everything else, check out our full Monster Hunter World Iceborne Wiki & Strategy Guide .
September 8, 2019 at 8:06 pm
The quest to do the expedition does not show up until you finish the third story quest hunting the Viper Toby. After I killed a monster for them, they showed up at my camp then I followed them to area 2.
September 8, 2019 at 11:26 pm
Will add a note for that, thank you very much! Also makes perfect sense, because that’s when the entire Hoarfrost Reach region opesn up (some areas are blocked by boulders until then).
September 22, 2019 at 9:07 am
It should be noted that steps 1-3 needs to be done in solo, when players join the Boaboa scouts will disappear, and won’t observe your hunt to proceed with the quest.
September 22, 2019 at 5:53 pm
Good point, thanks for bringing it up. Put a note in the guide. I only ever tried it solo, didn’t know of the problem in co-op.

Monster Hunter World - What is a Tailraider Voucher?
Don't be surprised if the Smithy doesn't know what to do with your Tailraider Voucher.
You can’t go five minutes in Monster Hunter World without picking up an item that baffles you as to its purpose. This was the case the first time I got my hands on a Lucky Voucher , and it was the case when I got my first Tailraider Voucher after my Palico friends returned from a Tailraider Safari.
Last updated on March 2, 2020, at 4:21 p.m. EST.
What is a Tailraider Voucher?
Tailraider Vouchers are earned by sending Palicos on a Tailraider Safari. This is done by speaking to the Housekeeper. Once the Tailraider Safari is complete you can revisit the Housekeeper to claim or see the rewards. This is where you’ll find your Tailraider Vouchers, assuming the Palicos brought any back for you.
The description of the Tailraider Voucher states that you should take it to Smithy to see what happens. This is both correct and incorrect. Yes, you spend Tailraider Vouchers at the Smithy, but nothing happens when you take it to him. Tailraider Vouchers are nothing more than a type of currency that you can spend at the Smithy when crafting certain items. He does not lose his mind when you possess one and start a conversation with him. Nothing happens at all, in fact.
One such item in my inventory that required a Tailraider Voucher to craft was the Rally Charm I. I have no interest in crafting it currently, but it’s nice to know it’s there. To get recipes for other items that require a Tailraider Voucher, be sure to complete the Grimalkyne quests that help you unlock Palico gadgets in Monster Hunter World.
Don’t stop at the Tailraider Voucher. For more on the most obscure items and concepts in the game, visit the Shacknews Monster Hunter World guide .

Trailraider is a mechanic introduced in Monster Hunter: World that governs additional NPC allies the player can get on the field aside from their Palico. Trailraiders are meant as a feature to help players that are playing by themselves; the presences of another player would automatically remove employed Trailraiders. Unlike previous generations where players possess the ability to customize ...

Tailraider Safaris are a great way to passively obtain monster parts and other materials while you are out on hunts. However, there are a few specific materials that are not easy to farm that are required for a few crafting recipes that are almost essential for the game's most difficult content. The recipes I'm talking about are Mega Demondrug ...
XsStreamMonsterX. • 6 yr. ago • Edited 6 yr. ago. The true benefit of Tailraider Safaris is that they act as a perfect timer for the Soft Soil in the farm. Soft Soil (which extends the duration of whatever other fertilizers you have in the farm) lasts for 5 hunts - the same number of hunts as a Tailraider Safari - before it runs out and you ...
Hi all. Just curious about what all the various symbols and rankings in the Tailrider Safari mean. Here are some of the things: 1. The paw symbol that sometimes appears on the different "tabs" of a mission 2. The paw rankings for Hunting, Gathering, and Research for a team 3. The star ratings on each tab 4. Also, why is there no blue tab that corresponds to the Research category, like there ...
When you do the high rank optional quests (find tracks or sight the monster in a quest or expedition to unlock them) it adds them to the Tailraider list. Defeating Nergigante adds the final route too. Then its down to random draw. Though it does seem to favor higher end monsters, Jagras and Kulu don't pop up too often at all.

4. When selecting a squad to deploy the Tailraider Safari, it displays their skills at the bottom of the window: I assumed the hunting/gathering rating reflects how successful the squad will be on nodes of matching color, but there are never any blue nodes. Only red and green. What does the research (blue) skill accomplish? monster-hunter-world.

Available Tailriders for Safaris will be from the palicos described on stored guild cards or the last people you played with otherwise, you'll end up with game generated generic palicos. Go their camp and recruit them to join you, then go hunting with them. Only works solo, but works in missions as well as expeditions. We are living in a world today where lemonade is made from artificial flavors and furniture polish is made from real lemons. Tailriders only level up as you use them.
