I think it states quite clearly on their website that there is an extra charge for pickup at the airport. I think if you want to reserve your tickets ahead of time it would be very convenient to be able to pick them up at the airport for a small fee. Most agencies will charge you a small fee if you book the tickets ahead of time. Regarding seating on the boats, it seems to be a free-for-all - nobody sits in their assigned seat numbers and this is an accepted fact, probably why Danae didn't look at the finer details.

Hi, I did not end up buying my tickets from Danae because I was advised by people on this forum that at the time I would be there, I would not need to buy them in advance. I had emailed them with questions but I don't remember them mentioning any additional fees?

Wind Conditions Forecast for Ferry Travelers in Greece

A map with live wind conditions for ferry travelers in Greece. The service provides a  forecast for Greece and the Greek Aegean and Ionian Sea Islands. Travelers should note that when the wind force is 7 and over in the Beaufort scale (bf), ferry crossings might be uncomfortable. Ferry cancellations might also occur. In general, conventional ferries are more seaworthy than high speed mono-hauls or catamarans. Small, passenger only hydrofoil schedules might be disrupted in some areas with force 6 winds. Danae.travel offers the wind conditions forecast for ferry travelers in Greece via the Windytv service.

By default, the map shows current conditions. You can use the timeline at the bottom of the map to have access to the wind forecast for the next few days. You can also move the position indicator placed on the map to view localized wind conditions in the area or near the island of your choice.

When wind conditions might disrupt ferry connections in Greece and the Greek islands, the danae.travel team will publish a warning on its blog and on twitter in order to inform customers and ferry travelers in Greece and the Greek islands in general.

In search of the world’s best dessert wines, don’t forget about greece.

Santorini is the kind of fantasy island that epitomizes the beauty of Greece, but it is also home to ... [+] some overlooked yet exceptional local wines.

Great meals usually end with great desserts, and for a really special culinary experience, these are best paired with great dessert wines.

From Portugal’s most famous wine, Port, to Spain’s Sherry to Quebec’s Ice wine, I’ve always been a big fan of exceptional dessert wines. But until I visited Santorini, I had no idea the island had its own legendary version, Vinsanto. I’m always trying new things when I travel, but as someone who has written extensively on food and wine for more than 30 years, it’s not often I stumble onto something that I never even knew existed.

Santorini Vinsanto is a great dessert wine made with the island's PDO grape varietal. This bottle is ... [+] from Santo Wines.

This particular wine is especially relevant right now because Greece has exploded in travel popularity, and since the pandemic has become one of the most sought-after destinations for Americans. In 2023 the number of travelers from the United States increased by a whopping 29.2% to just over 1.4 million. Among the country’s 6,000 or so islands, Santorini is near the top of the list as one of the most popular. Many of the nearly million and a half Americans who went to Greece last year visited Santorini, and the numbers look to be even higher for 2024. Greece has amazing food, and these world class sweet wines are a great addition.

They also legitimately qualify for “Hidden Gem” status, since the only wine like this most people outside of Greece are familiar with is Italy’s much better-known Vin Santo. The two are very similar but also intrinsically different due to the underlying grape varieties. The Italian style is a specialty of Tuscany, and one of several sweet Italian regional wines made with the passito method, in which grapes (most typically trebbiano and malvasia) are dried into raisins to concentrate their sugar content, then pressed and aged in small wooden barrels with air space to produce a nutty, caramel quality. The saintly name, usually written as two words, has come to mean Holy Wine, believed to have once been part of communion. The one-word Greek version also has Italian origins, Vino di Santorini, “Wines of Santorini,” given by Venetian conquerors during the 12th century. The local name transformed over time to Vino Santo and then ultimately, Vinsanto.

They still do things the old fashioned way at Santorini wineries such as Estate Argyros

In One Massive Attack, Ukrainian Missiles Hit Four Russian Ships—Including Three Landing Vessels

Here are all the major allegations against sean diddy combs, rfk jr picks nicole shanahan as running mate tech lawyer once married to google founder brin.

In Italy I’ve had good, bad and indifferent Vin Santo, but only a handful of winemakers on Santorini produce the dessert wine, and I tasted most of them, and they were all exceptional. Assyrtiko, Santorini’s special local grape variety, has PDO status on the island (Protected Denomination of Origin), the highest level of regional quality assurance given by the European Union, and one the world’s greatest food “endorsements.” Santorini is a hot, dry island with rich volcanic soil that is great for growing things, but without the water needed to do so. Over the centuries local winemakers have perfected a unique vine pruning system that results in a basket shaped cluster of vines at ground level with the protected grapes growing inside the circle, like no vineyards I’ve ever seen.

It is not a place that would be good for growing many varietals, but it’s perfect for PDO Santorini assyrtiko. Vinsanto produced on the island must be at least 51% PDO assyrtiko, and then aged in oak barrels for at least two years, though the handful of producers use a higher percentage and go much longer. Most “current” releases are the 2016 vintage or older. They use bigger barrels than the Italians, and like champagne, Santorini’s Vinsanto is one of those products made under strict legal and quality regulations that practically guarantee its excellence.

The grapes used to produce Santorini Vinsanto are air dried under the sun like raisins to ... [+] concentrate their sugar.

I visited Santorini with Diane Kochilas , one of the world’s leading authorities on Greek cuisine. Kochilas is the host of PBS television series My Greek Table , a cookbook author and also operates a renowned immersion cooking school on the “Blue Zone” Greek island of Ikaria. She took me to a favorite winery of hers, Domaine Sigalas , on the outskirts of Santorini’s charming “second city,” Oia. We had lunch and a tasting, everything was delicious, and I highly recommend a visit. But I was especially blown away by the Vinsanto, and despite being a pricey wine by my budget standards, I bought two bottles, one for myself and one for my oenophile sister. Domaine Sigalas Vinsanto has won a laundry list of medals in international competitions, and is available at better retailers in the U.S., with the 2016 vintage (75% assyrtiko and 25% Aidani) running about $100.

While it is a dessert wine, and perfect with chocolate and other sweets, like port or sherry, Santorini Vinsanto is also fantastic with cheese, especially bleu and saltier styles. It’s also great on its own as an aperitif or digestif, and even better on a Mediterranean island as the sun goes down. It’s a white wine, but most typically has an amber to orangish color and intense, rich flavor, most typically described with words such as cinnamon, raisin, honey, toffee, butterscotch and caramel.

Some Santorini wineries, like Santo Wines, offer tours to visitors.

Interestingly, Santorini Vinsanto has been off the map to Americans not just because of the small volume and limited number of producers, but also because for much of its long history it has been wildly popular in the Russian market, so much of it was exported there, but now times have changed.

The biggest producer is Santo Wines , and while export is limited, their 2016 vintage can be found here for around $50. Santo Wines also has the biggest tour operation and is close to Santorini’s main city, Fira.

One of the most readily available Vinsantos in this country (retailers including wine.com ) is the Estate Argyros “First Release” 2015, around $85, but if you can find their 2002 Late Release it’s even better. The “list” price on the 2002 is $143 but one online shop, Saratoga Wines, lists it for a much more reasonable $113.

I tasted the three wineries mentioned above, and all are wonderful, but there are a handful of others I’ve seen for sale in this country, including Artemis Karamolegos Vineyards (around $80).

These dessert wines go great with local sweets such as baklava, but are also wonderful with many of ... [+] Greece's standout cheeses, including feta.

These are world-class dessert wines, and certainly worth seeking out here. But if you travel to Greece—and you should—you’ll find them on the lists at many fine dining spots around the country, especially in Athens, and any visit to Santorini would be incomplete without a tasting and ideally, a winery visit.
