So you’ve migrated to Australia and now you wish to have your parents join you!

Nearly half of all Australians were either born overseas or had at least one parent who was.

The  Parent Visa  enables parents of children who are Australian citizens or permanent residents to be sponsored for permanent residence in Australia.

Visitor Visas (Temporary)

For many people, a permanent contributory parent visa may be out of the reach, financially, and the non-contributory visa not practical due to the lengthy processing times.

A visitor visa may be a fast and inexpensive alternative to bring parents to spend time with family in Australia. Longer validity visitor visas are available for parents of Australian permanent residents and citizens. Parents of Australian permanent residents and citizens currently have the option of using the Visitor (Subclass 600) visa stream to spend time with their children, which enables longer stays in Australia of up to 12 months in any 18-month period.

Sponsored Parent Visa (Temporary)

The Subclass 870 visa is a temporary visa which allows a parent of an Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen to visit Australia for up to three (3) or five (5) years.

The visa allows parents to remain in Australia for a longer period of time, up to five years at a time without departing. It provides an alternative option to Visitor visas which only allow shorter periods of stay.

The 870 visa is also an alternative if you don’t meet the balance of family which is required for the permanent parent visa options.

Parent Visa (Permanent)

The Parent Visa enables parents of children who are Australian citizens or permanent residents to be sponsored for permanent residence in Australia.

The Parent visa migration program is capped and queued, some visa types have a long processing time of up to 30 years. Your application will be processed in the order in which they are lodged.

Primary requirements

• Parent of a citizen or permanent resident
• The Applicant must be the parent of an Australian citizen or permanent resident who has spent at least two (2) years living in Australia
• Balance of Family Test You must pass the balance of family test (at least half of the applicants’ children and step-children must be citizens or permanent Residents in Australia, or more of the main applicants’ children must be settled permanent citizen or residents of Australia than any other single country)
• Applications lodged onshore for both the non-contributory and contributory parent visas require the main applicant to be 67 years of age or older.
• Assurance of support (AoS)- Applications for a permanent Parent category visa require an AoS, which is a legal commitment from an individual or organisation to give the applicant financial support, so they do not have to rely on social security payments.

Further Criteria for Contributory Aged Parent visa

• The main applicant of this visa must be 67 years of age or older, however, if they have a partner aged younger than this, they can be included as a secondary applicant.
• Health and  Character Your parents will need to meet health and character requirements and will need to undertake a medical assessment, chest x-ray and HIV test.
• Assurance of support (AoS)- Applications for a permanent Parent category visa require an AoS, which is a legal commitment from an individual or organisation to give the applicant financial support, so they do not have to rely on  social security payments .

What is an Assurance of Support?

The Assurance of Support (AoS) is a promise to pay back any income support provided to the visa holder during their initial stay in Australia. The AoS support period differs for each visa type.

• 10 years for Contributory Parent Visas (143 / 864
• 4 years for Parent Visas (103/804)

This time starts when your visa is granted.

An Assurer must:

• Be an adult (ie over 18 years of age);
• Be usually resident in Australia;
• Have sufficient income to ensure that they can meet any debts if they arise – income, assets, liabilities and spouse’s income may all be relevant to the assessment of the Assurer’s financial status; and
• Be able to provide a notice of assessment issued by the Australian Taxation Commissioner for each of the last two financial years.

Parent Visa Categories

There are currently six classes of Parent visas which fall into two major categories – non-contributory and contributory. They may also be classified on the basis of an applicant’s age; and temporary and permanent residence.

The major difference between Contributory and Non- Contributory Parent Visa

There are two pathways for permanent residency for parents: ‘non-contributory’ and ‘contributory’. The non-contributory Visa has a much longer processing time although attracts a lower Government application charge. The contributory parent visa can be processed a lot sooner but the application charge is far greater.

There is however an option to spread the costs for the contributory parent visa over two stages. The first stage is where the provisional visa is applied for which is approved for a period of two years. The second stage of the application is applied for prior to the provisional visa expiring, where you can apply for the permanent stage, paying the balance of the fees.

You will not be considered to have left Australia. A round trip cruise will not reset your stay period on your visa.

As an international student, you could be eligible to bring your family with you to Australia.

Main content

Thousands of international students bring family members with them to australia each year. it’s an excellent way for your family to learn about other cultures,  explore a new country , learn in diverse classrooms, develop their language skills, and build lifelong connections. .

You can include family members when you lodge your student visa application, including:   

• your partner (spouse, de facto or same-sex partner) 
• your dependent child/children under 18 years of age and, or 
• your partner's dependent child/children under 18 years of age.  

You must provide evidence showing your relationship with your dependent family members. This may include marriage certificates and birth certificates.   

Your family members will also need to provide evidence that they meet specific  health and character requirements. This may include medical examinations and police clearance certificates. 

You will also need to prove that you can financially support your family when you are in Australia.

Bringing your partner

A spouse or de facto partner can be added as a secondary applicant to a student visa application.  

Couples may need to provide evidence to support the claimed relationship, including a marriage certificate or proof of living together. Spouses and de facto partners must also satisfy the Department of Home Affairs that they are genuine temporary entrants.  

Your partner may have different working rights than you. For more information on visa conditions, check the visa grant letter or use the Visa Entitlement Verification Online system (VEVO) .  

Bringing your child/children

The Australian Government will only grant a student visa to your child if they are under 18 years of age when a decision is made on your visa application. They must apply for their own visa if they are 18 or older.

You will need to pay for any dependent children to go to either a public or private school in Australia. The starting age for schools in Australia is around five years, but the exact start can differ in each state and territory.

For children under the age of five years, you can consider childcare or kindergarten services. Some Australian education providers, including universities, have childcare facilities on or near campus. There are also private and not-for-profit childcare centres located in all cities. 

It’s a good idea for all childcare services to research the options and costs before you arrive. You should look for the type of care that suits you and your child best and a service that is in a convenient location (e.g. near to campus or where you plan to live). Making childcare inquiries sooner than later is also a good idea, as there is often a waiting list. You can add your child’s name to multiple waiting lists if you are unsure about your service needs or exact location in Australia.

• a parent, custodian or relative who is 21 years or older
• have enough money to support themselves and you during their stay, and
• able to provide you with accommodation, welfare and other support.

Your parent will have to apply for a  Student Guardian visa . Your parent or guardian:

• cannot work in Australia. 
• must live with you. 
• must satisfy the Department of Home Affairs requirement that they are genuine temporary entrants.

Bringing your family at a later time

You must declare family members when you lodge your student visa application, even if they do not plan to travel with you to Australia immediately. If you don’t declare them on your student visa application, they will not be eligible for a student visa to join you in Australia at any stage.

Your family member(s) can apply as a subsequent entrant later, separate from your application, in ImmiAccount .  

If a person became your family member after you lodged your application, and before a final decision on your visa application, you must inform the Department of Home Affairs of the  change in circumstances.

Support for you and your family 

Your education provider will offer support services. You should contact your provider’s student services for more information regarding accommodation, childcare and schools. Some education providers also offer childcare and English language classes for your family.
