Owning a humidor is a great way to preserve the flavor of your cigars and prolong their life. Before you can begin using your humidor, you need to do some prep work. You will need to season the humidor and assure the humidity levels are adequate to safely store your cigars.

Beginning the Seasoning Process

Step 1 Gather your materials.

  • Distilled water
  • A plastic bag
  • A cloth or rag

Step 2 Activate your hygrometer.

  • Wrap the hygrometer in the towel. Set it aside for 30 minutes.
  • Remove the hygrometer in the towel and calibrate it so it reads 95 to 97%. Each hygrometer will be calibrated differently. Refer to your manufacturer's instructions to figure out how to calibrate yours.
  • If your hygrometer already reads 95 to 97% when you remove it from the towel, it is ready to use. You do not need to calibrate it.

Step 3 Do any necessary cleaning.

  • If there is any old tobacco or debris in your humidor, spray the inside of the humidor with compressed air.
  • Wipe down the interior of the humidor with a damp rag.

Completing Preparation of Your Humidor

Step 1 Submerge the humidifier in distilled water.

  • Keep the humidifier face down. Leave it submerged for 2 to 3 minutes.
  • Wipe off any excess water with a paper towel when you remove the humidor.
  • Make sure you use distilled water. Tap water can damage a humidor.

Step 2 Place a plastic bag and damp sponge in the humidor.

  • Once the hygrometer and humidifier are in place, close the humidor.
  • Set the humidor aside somewhere where it will not be disturbed. Leave it closed for 12 to 24 hours.

Step 4 Repeat the process again.

  • Once you're done, the humidity level should be between 65% and 75%. It may be slightly higher right after you complete the process. Give the moisture levels a few minutes to go down.
  • Your humidor may not be between 65% and 75% after repeating the process a second time. In this case, you'll need to repeat the process one more time.

Caring for Your Humidor

Step 1 Store cigars properly.

  • In the event the humidity has dropped, you will have to repeat the preparation process. You would remoisten the humidor the same way you initially prepared it.
  • Make sure to use distilled water when you repeat the process. This is just as important the second time around as it was the first. Tap water can harm the humidor.

Step 4 Store your humidor safely.

  • A drawer is a good place to store a humidor.
  • If you have children or animals, keep the humidor out of their reach.

Expert Q&A

  • Periodically check the humidity level. Cigar experts generally accept 60-70% as a good range, but it is entirely up to you and how you like your cigars. Add distilled water (or a store-bought glycol solution) to your humidifier if it is too low. Thanks Helpful 5 Not Helpful 4
  • Some cigars can transfer flavor/aroma qualities to one another while in your humidor, so try to keep similar cigars grouped together. Thanks Helpful 4 Not Helpful 4

How To Use Travel Humidor [Step By Step]

Table of Contents

What Is a Travel Humidor?

A travel humidor is a must-have for avid cigar enthusiasts who enjoy a good smoke while traveling. It is a portable storage case designed to protect cigars and maintain their freshness and flavor. Unlike regular cigar cases, travel humidors are equipped with a humidification system that controls the humidity level inside, ensuring optimal conditions for your precious cigars.

Choosing the Right Travel Humidor

Before diving into how to use a travel humidor, it is essential to select the right one for your needs. Consider the following factors while choosing your travel humidor:

1. Size: Ensure that the humidor can accommodate the number of cigars you plan to carry during your trips. It should have enough space to prevent overcrowding, which may lead to damage.

2. Material: Opt for a travel humidor made of sturdy and durable materials like aluminum or ABS plastic. These materials protect your cigars from any external impact and maintain the ideal conditions inside.

3. Humidification System: Look for a humidor with a reliable humidification system that can regulate and maintain the appropriate humidity level, usually around 70-72%.

Step by Step Guide on Using a Travel Humidor

Step 1: prepare your travel humidor.

Start by preparing your travel humidor before packing your cigars. Here’s what you need to do:

1. Open your travel humidor and inspect its condition. Ensure there are no cracks, loose parts, or signs of damage that may affect its functionality.

2. Season the humidor if it is brand new or has been unused for a while. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions on prepping the humidor. Typically, you need to wipe the interior with a clean damp cloth and let it dry.

3. Fill the humidification device or system with distilled water or the recommended solution according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Be cautious not to overfill, as excessive moisture can damage your cigars.

Step 2: Prepare Your Cigars

Properly prepare your cigars to ensure they can withstand the travel conditions and maintain their quality:

1. Inspect your cigars to ensure they are in excellent condition before placing them in the humidor. Check for any signs of damage, mold, or insects. Remove any damaged cigars from your selection.

2. Place the cigars inside the humidor, arranging them neatly and leaving enough space between each cigar. Avoid overcrowding, as it can affect the overall humidity and airflow.

Step 3: Monitor and Maintain

Once your travel humidor is packed with cigars, it’s important to monitor and maintain the ideal conditions throughout your journey:

1. Keep the humidor closed as much as possible to maintain a stable internal environment. Opening it frequently may expose your cigars to sudden changes in temperature and humidity.

2. Regularly check the humidity level and refill the humidification device or system as needed. Be cautious not to overfill or let it dry out completely.

3. Store your travel humidor in a cool and dark place, away from direct sunlight or extreme temperatures. Avoid placing it near sources of heat, like vents or radiators.

Step 4: Enjoy Your Cigars

After successfully using your travel humidor throughout your trip, it’s time to enjoy your well-preserved cigars. Here are a few tips for optimal enjoyment:

1. Give your cigars some time to adjust to the ambient temperature before smoking them. This allows the flavors and aromas to fully develop.

2. Use a proper cigar cutter to ensure a clean cut on the cap. Avoid using your teeth or any sharp objects that may damage the wrapper.

3. Take your time to savor the smoke. Puff gently and slowly to appreciate the intricate flavors and enjoy the calming experience.

In conclusion, a travel humidor is an essential accessory for cigar aficionados who want to enjoy their favorite cigars on the go. By following these step-by-step instructions, you can ensure your cigars remain fresh, flavorful, and in optimal condition, no matter where your travels take you. Remember to choose the right travel humidor, properly prepare your cigars, and monitor the conditions throughout your journey. Happy smoking!

Blog / 14 Oct 2021

While traveling for business or pleasure, a real cigar amateur will surely be packing a few cigars in his suitcase.

Since these are certain to be high quality cigars, he will be worrying about how to keep them fresh.

Terry Pomerantz tells us how to use a travel humidor .

What is a travel humidor?

A travel cigar humidor works the same way as a walk-in humidor or humidor for household use. Its main characteristics are the same.

The main difference is that regulating humidity becomes more complex. Travel size humidors are smaller, which means there is less space for the air to circulate.

How to use a travel humidor?

A travel humidor is used the same way as a regular household humidor.

You do have to make sure that the wood with which your travel cigar humidor is made, is of high quality. High quality wood allows for humidity to be absorbed and by doing so, keeps all fluctuations of humidity in balance.

You must also ensure that the separators inside the travel cigar humidor are placed correctly . When separators are properly positioned, each cigar remains in its place so that wrappers do not touch or get damaged.

How to choose your travel humidor?

To choose a good travel humidor, you must first determine what your needs are:

  • Do you travel often and for long periods?
  • Do you smoke cigars during your business trips? Your vacations? Both or neither?
  • Do you usually find great places to purchase high quality cigars during these travels?

Depending on your needs, you can determine if a small travel humidor (which can contain 10 to 15 cigars) or a larger cigar case (with enough space for 50 cigars) is the appropriate choice for you.

In most travel cigar humidors, there is also space to store your lighter and your cutter.

Travel cigar humidors made of reinforced plastic , like the Cigar Caddy , are shock resistant and protect cigars adequately.

Black humidifier case with diffuser and embossed foam under the cover as well as 9 dividers and 2 foam insulators; plastic exterior with handle on hinges, 2 clip clasps on each side and a ventilation adjustment button.

How to care for your travel humidor

Travel humidor care is not much different than caring for your walk-in humidor or household humidor.

Make sure it works properly and that it is set to a humidity degree of around 70%.

When traveling with your humidor, avoid exposure to sunlight.

Use distilled water to fill the reservoir and make sure to clean all surfaces regularly so as to avoid dust accumulation.

Terry offers 2 simple solutions to replace a travel humidor

If you prefer to travel “light”, Terry suggests placing your cigars in a conservation bag with a pouch to maintain proper humidity . You then simply roll the bag to empty the air it contains and place it in your briefcase.

You can also find new humidor bags (brands like Boveda, Adonori or Ashton) in specialized tobacco shops. These highly resistant bags close with a zipper .

Humidity control is incorporated in the lining of the bag. Depending on their size, they can contain anywhere from 5 to 25 cigars, or more.

How To Use A Travel Humidor

If you’re a cigar smoker, you know the importance of keeping your cigars in a humidor. But what if you’re on the go and don’t have your regular humidor with you? That’s where a travel humidor comes in handy.

A travel humidor is a small, portable humidor that you can take with you when you’re traveling. It’s perfect for storing cigars in your luggage or in your car.

There are a few things you need to know before using a travel humidor. First, you need to make sure that the travel humidor is properly humidified. If it’s not, your cigars will dry out and they will not taste good.

To humidify the travel humidor, you can use a humidifier pack or a small bottle of water. Just make sure that the humidor is completely sealed before you add the humidifier pack or water.

You also need to make sure that the travel humidor is airtight. If it’s not airtight, the humidor won’t be able to hold the humidity and your cigars will dry out.

To ensure that the humidor is airtight, you can use a rubber band to seal the lid shut. Or, you can use a travel humidor sealer, which is a small device that seals the humidor shut.

Once the humidor is properly humidified and airtight, you can start packing your cigars. Just make sure that the cigars are in a airtight container, such as a zip-lock bag, before you put them in the humidor.

The travel humidor should be kept in a cool, dark place. If it’s exposed to direct sunlight or extreme temperatures, the cigars will dry out.

Now that you know how to use a travel humidor, you can take your cigars with you wherever you go. Just make sure to pack them in a airtight container and keep the humidor in a cool, dark place.

Do you put water in a travel humidor?

No, you should not put water in a travel humidor. The water can cause the humidor to rust, and it can also damage the cigars.

How long do cigars last in a travel humidor?

This is a question that cigar smokers often ask. The answer, of course, depends on a number of factors, including the type of cigars you are storing, the climate where you are storing them, and the humidity level inside the humidor.

As a general rule, however, cigars can last anywhere from a few days to a few weeks in a travel humidor. If you are travelling to a hot, dry climate, it is important to keep the humidity level inside the humidor as high as possible in order to prevent the cigars from drying out. Conversely, if you are travelling to a humid climate, it is important to keep the humidity level as low as possible in order to prevent the cigars from becoming moldy.

It is also important to make sure that the cigars are tightly packed inside the humidor. If there is too much air space between the cigars, they will not last as long.

If you are looking for a more specific answer, the folks at Cigar Aficionado have put together the following chart which gives the average lifespan of different types of cigars at different humidity levels:

Cigar Type / Humidity Level

Parejo / 65%

Churchill / 70%

Robusto / 75%

Lonsdale / 85%

Figurado / 90%

In general, the thicker and more tightly packed a cigar is, the longer it will last.

Can you use a travel humidor as a regular humidor?

Can you use a travel humidor as a regular humidor?

A travel humidor is designed to protect cigars while you are on the go, but can it be used as a regular humidor? The answer is yes, but there are a few things you need to keep in mind.

A regular humidor is typically larger than a travel humidor, so you will need to make sure all of your cigars fit. You will also need to monitor the humidity level more closely in a regular humidor, as it will be more difficult to keep consistent in a smaller space.

If you are using a travel humidor as a regular humidor, it is important to keep the humidor sealed as much as possible. The humidor will not work as well if it is opened frequently.

Overall, a travel humidor can be used as a regular humidor, but it is important to be aware of the differences between the two.

How does a portable humidor work?

A humidor is a container that is used to store cigars. They are made out of different materials, but most humidors have a Spanish cedar lining. This helps to keep the cigars moist and preserve their flavor.

There are different types of humidors, including desktop humidors, travel humidors, and portable humidors. A portable humidor is a smaller humidor that is designed to be taken with you when you travel. They are often made out of a lightweight material, such as aluminum, and they come with a humidifier to keep the cigars moist.

A portable humidor works by using a humidifier to keep the cigars moist. The humidifier is a small device that sits inside the humidor and releases moisture into the air. This helps to keep the cigars moist and prevents them from drying out.

Many portable humidors also come with a thermostat. This allows you to control the temperature of the humidor and keep the cigars at the perfect humidity level.

What are the benefits of a portable humidor?

The benefits of a portable humidor include:

-The ability to travel with your cigars

-The ability to control the humidity level

-The ability to control the temperature

-The ability to keep your cigars fresh

Do I need to season my travel humidor?

A travel humidor is a small cigar humidor that is designed to be carried with you on your travels. Many people choose to purchase a travel humidor because it is a convenient way to keep their cigars fresh while on the go.

One question that often arises with regard to travel humidors is whether or not they need to be seasoned. In general, the answer is no. However, there are a few exceptions.

If your travel humidor is made of wood, it will need to be seasoned. This is because wood is a natural material that can absorb moisture and humidity. If you do not season a wood-based travel humidor, the moisture and humidity will cause the wood to swell and the seal on the humidor to break.

If your travel humidor is made of plastic or metal, it does not need to be seasoned.

If you are not sure whether your travel humidor needs to be seasoned, it is best to consult the manufacturer’s instructions.

Do you take cigars out of box to put in humidor?

Cigars should be stored in a humidor to keep them in good condition. Some people may wonder if it is necessary to take cigars out of the box and put them in the humidor.

The general rule is that cigars should be stored in the humidor as soon as possible. It is best to remove them from the box and put them in a humidor that has a humidity of around 70%. If you are not able to put them in the humidor right away, you can store them in a Ziploc bag with a humidifier.

If you are going to store cigars in the humidor for an extended period of time, you should remove them from the cellophane wrappers. This will allow the cigars to breathe and will keep them from becoming too moist.

Cigars that are not stored in a humidor can become dry and brittle. This can cause the cigars to taste bad and can also cause them to crack.

Should you season a travel humidor?

A travel humidor is a small container that is used to store cigars. It is important to season a travel humidor before using it to store cigars. Seasoning a travel humidor helps to keep the cigars fresh and prevents them from becoming dry.

There are a few different ways to season a travel humidor. One way is to fill the humidor with distilled water and let it sit for 24 hours. After 24 hours, empty the humidor and let it air dry. Another way to season a travel humidor is to use a humidification pack. Simply place the humidification pack in the humidor and let it sit for 24 hours. After 24 hours, remove the humidification pack and let the humidor air dry.

It is important to season a travel humidor before using it to store cigars. Seasoning a travel humidor helps to keep the cigars fresh and prevents them from becoming dry.

How to Set Up a Humidor

Unless you’re the kind of person that smokes your cigar the same day you buy them, you’re going to need a humidor for storage . Once you properly set up a humidor for your cigars, you will feel a real difference with what you’re smoking. A humidor is essential for the preservation and aging of all cigars, whether you’re spending $5 per stick for $50. That being said, a humidor isn’t ready to go right out the box.

If you don’t perform several preparational steps, the wood will take out the moisture of your cigars and they will become dry and crumbly. Follow the steps below to successfully set up a humidor.

Table of Contents

How to season your humidor

Follow the instructions below but be sure not to skip any steps.

Dip the humidifier (the small sponge found inside the humidor) into the distilled water or special humidification solution completely. Keep it there for about 3 minutes to soak. Never use tap water or any other substitutes as they can have minerals or other chemicals that can spoil the humidor and/or cause bacterial growth.

How to Set Up a Humidor

Take your humidifier out of the bowl and dry it with a clean piece of fabric to absorb all excess liquid.

Cover the bottom of your humidifier with a plastic bag. Check if it’s done properly along all the perimeter.

Locate the soaked sponge in the middle onto the plastic bag.

Attach the humidifier and the hydrometer into the humidor.

After closing the lid of the box, leave it for 12 hours minimum . It would be nice if you do it for several days.

The hygrometer will tell you the level of humidity inside your humidor. If its level is not enough you will have to repeat all the steps again. Remember that the safe level of humidity is between 65 and 75% .

At the moment you see these figures on the scale, the humidor is ready for your collection of cigars.

Re-humidifying the humidor

Sometimes it happens that your humidor loses its balance and needs to be re-humidified. It’s simple but requires some accuracy for your humidor to maintain the perfect balance and serve you for many years. For this procedure, you will need a short glass and a little distilled water or humidification solution.

Re-humidifying the humidor

Choose the proper place. It has to be a dry and spacious room. Fill a shot glass with distilled water or special humidification solution and put it at the bottom of the humidor. Special solutions usually contain several components and prevent the growth of mold and bacteria inside the humidor.

Charge the humidifier in an ordinary way. Don’t pour too much water or solution as you aim to moisten the device but not to soak it. Without waiting, put the humidifier back into its place. Dry any excess moisture from the humidifier if needed.

Don’t forget to place the hygrometer into the humidor. Locate it far from the humidifier to guarantee accurate reading of the humidity level.

With patience, wait until the hygrometer tells you that it has already reached the level of 65% , and your humidor is ready for use again.

The hygrometer

Most models of the humidors are already provided with the calibrated hygrometer. Remember that the ideal level of humidity is 65%, but there is a so-called safe range to keep cigars fresh. It is from 60 to 75% . Some smokers prefer their cigars when the range is closer to 80%, but still, the storage is maintained at 65%. For such a reason, real connoisseurs obtain two different humidors.

Different humidors

Don’t think too much about the location of the hygrometer as you can place it anywhere convenient for you. Just keep in mind that you must allow airflow for the most accurate reading results. Mount it on the lid of the box or inside the humidor.

Calibrating the hygrometer

A hygrometer as many measuring tools has to be calibrated. Keep in mind that calibration must be carried out not only before the first use but regularly every 3-4 months . The process of calibration is not extremely difficult but for this, you will need a little ionized salt, distilled water, and a plastic container. The last one shouldn’t be large but its bottom must be flat.

  • Take a teaspoon of salt and put it into the container.
  • Pour a bit of distilled water and mix it to have a pasty substance. Be precise with water, don’t add more than needed, as it can distort the measurement.
  • Put your hydrometer next to the paste into the plastic container.
  • With the lead closed leave the container for up to 10 hours but not less than 7 . Don’t open and move the item.
  • After the required time has passed, open the container, take the hygrometer and check. The reading must be from 73 to 77%. If your figures differ it means, that this hygrometer can’t be calibrated. The ideal figure is 75 and the difference between this and your number shows the gap, by which the hygrometer is out of calibration.

The humidifier

The humidifier is a device that maintains the level of humidity inside your humidor and keeps your cigars safe and fresh.

Tips for charging the humidifier

  • Take the humidifier from the box.
  • Pour some distilled water or special humidification solution into the item through the grate.
  • Don’t use more liquid than needed. With the help of a dry cloth wipe any excess water from the front part of the humidifier.
  • Put it back to place.
  • Pay attention that distilled water increases the level of humidity inside your humidor, when special solutions, on the contrary, decrease it.

Taking care of your cigars

Havana cigars are like wine. They need time to mature. So they will improve their taste over the years if they are kept properly. Don’t forget to fill up your humidifier on time. For this purpose, it’s better to use special humidification solutions which are usually made of polyglycol, distilled water, and mold inhibitors. The second factor that can guarantee the wonderful taste of your cigars over time is the level of humidity, it must fluctuate at the level of 65%, plus/ minus 2%.

Taking care of your cigars

The temperature is also important. Aim the range from 65° f to 72° f. To be sure that the conditions are just what you want, you can check the cigars the next way. Press your cigar a little under the band with your thumb. If your cigars feel firm and elastic it means they are in a good condition.

Hard but crispy feelings indicate under humidification, and vice versa very spongy and soft cigars are over humidified.

The so-called white bloom like a mold sometimes appears on the wrappers of cigars. Excessive humidity can be the reason, but it will not spoil the taste. Take a special brush for shaving or any other soft brush and get rid of the bloom, moving towards the open end.

Fresh air is a must for Havana cigars. From time to time open the humidor and rotate your cigars. If you are not a regular smoker do it weekly. Replace the cigars from the bottom layer to the upper one and vice versa. Never store other objects, for example, lighters or cutters inside the section for storing cigars.

Tips and tricks for taking care of your humidor

  • Choose a safe place for your humidor to avoid its falling down.
  • Direct sunlight is forbidden as it can heat the humidor interior and fade the exterior look of the wood.
  • Don’t put anything on the top of the box.
  • A soft cloth will suit the best for cleaning the humidor.
  • For safe cleaning and polishing, both ordinary furniture polish and beeswax are great. Do it regularly and your humidor will look fantastic.
  • If you don’t want to damage the wood, never wipe the humidor inside with a wet cloth soaked in water or any other solution.

Tips and tricks for taking care of your humidor

When you get a new humidor you can’t wait to fill it with your precious collection of cigars, but stop. You must wait, following several simple steps described above, you will not damage the content. If you start using your humidor before it actually reaches the level of 65% humidity, the results will be very disappointing.

How to Set Up and Use a Humidor

travel humidor instructions

When you buy your humidor, it doesn’t come ready for you to pop your cigar collection in there right away. You need to set up your humidor before you can use it.

This setup doesn’t take too long, and it’s not a difficult thing to do, but it is important. The humidor is designed to keep your cigars fresh and at the proper humidity levels and temperature. Prepping your humidor helps ensure it can do its job.

Let’s take a closer look at how to set up and use your humidor, and why it’s important to do so.

Why Setting Up Your Humidor Is Important

travel humidor instructions

The setup of a humidor is often referred to as seasoning a humidor . You season a humidor much in the same way you season other things, such as food. You’re prepping the humidor for use.

The reason this is important to season your humidor is that you need to prepare the interior of the humidor for the proper levels of humidity. Without setting up and seasoning your humidor, it will do a poor job of keeping the humidity levels consistent and controllable.

This can lead your cigars to dry out and crack. That’s exactly the opposite of what you want to happen.

Setting Up Your Humidor

How to set up and season your humidor

So, how do you set up your humidor? It’s honestly fairly easy. The exact instructions will vary from humidor to humidor, but the gist of it is that you add water or moisture to the interior of your humidor prior to use.

You want to bring the levels of humidity up to somewhere around 70 percent. From there you have things right where you want them and can fine-tune as you see fit.

As I mentioned the exact setup will vary from humidor to humidor. That said, in some of the versions, you simply wipe down the interior of the box with a wet cloth. You’ll also need to also attach the hygrometer to the inside of the humidor.

The Klaro Desktop Analog Cherry Humidor (or the digital version of this same humidor), for example, requires both the humidification device and the hygrometer to be attached to the lid of the box. Many of the higher-end humidors have built-in hygrometers.

For these higher-end models, it’s a matter of seasoning the humidor and getting your humidification device set up. Klaro humidors come with our own proprietary Hydro System. Setting up this system is simple. Here’s a quick guide .

Using Your Humidor

travel humidor instructions

Once your humidor is set up, it’s ready for use. Still, you need to monitor the interior humidity level and the temperature. Just because you seasoned your humidor properly doesn’t mean that it will always stay that way.

Check your humidor periodically, and make adjustments as needed to the humidification device. This may mean referring back to the Hydro System instructions from time to time.

Keeping your humidity levels within the correct range will also vary from humidor to humidor. You’ll find different sizes of humidors and different types of humidification devices perform differently. This means what works well for one kind of humidor might not for another, especially if the size and humidification device are different.

It might take a little while for you to feel like your cigars are where you want them to be in terms of humidity. Everyone is a little different. Some cigar enthusiasts prefer a more moist cigar whereas others prefer something on the drier side. There’s no right or wrong answer here, but typically most cigars do best between 67 and 72 percent humidity.

Also, as you add more cigars to your humidor, you need to continue to carefully monitor the level of humidity. It will change slightly as you add or remove cigars. Also the quality and make-up of your cigars will factor in as well.

The bottom line is once you season your humidor, it’s ready for use. From there, you should monitor the humidity level to make sure it’s within the recommended ranges. If you do that, you should be able to enjoy properly humidified cigars for years to come.

Humidor Care and Instructions

If you are planning on keeping your cigars for longer than 1-2 weeks, you will need a humidor. Cigars must be kept below the maximum temperature of 73°F (23°C) and between 65-72% humidity . Ideal conditions are 70°F (21°C) and 70% humidity.

Proper cigar storage is crucial. If you do not store your cigars properly you may encounter some of the following problems: uneven or too rapid burn, harsh or bitter taste, broken wrapper, difficulty lighting or keeping the cigar lit, mold, and tiny holes in your cigars, a sign of tobacco beetle infestation.

When you first set up a humidor, you must check the humidity level at least every two weeks to ensure that the humidity does not vary. Once a month (more often in arid weather conditions) add a   Propylene Glycol Activation Solution (recommended) or distilled water to the humidification device . Once your humidor is stable and you have been taking care of it for a while, you will learn how long you can go without adding water or activation solution.

You should never use tap water as it contains minerals and chlorine that can clog the humidifier’s pores and inhibit operation.

Store your humidor in a cool, dry place to prevent mold growth. Avoid placing your cigars in direct sunlight. If the temperature and humidity get too high, cigars can develop a potentially damaging fungus or mold. Another hazard of cigars stored in too hot or humid an environment is an infestation of worms called lacioderma. The worms lay eggs inside cigars and burrow out, forming tiny holes in the wrapper and metamorphosing into tiny, brown beetles. If you discover the presence of worm holes in your cigars, remove and destroy the affected cigars immediately, and then carefully inspect all the cigars in your humidor for signs of infestation.

Do not keep your cigars in the refrigerator as it will suck out the moisture content of your sticks. Freezing your cigars is an extreme measure to be used only in case of bug infestation at the risk of damaging the cigars (but getting rid of the bugs is a victory of its own!).

A humidor’s proper moisture and temperature must be created before storing cigars, this is called Seasoning your Humidor. To setup your humidor, follow these simple instructions:

  • Saturate the black plastic humidifiers with   Propylene Glycol Activation Solution or distilled water. Dry off the surface of the humidifier and place on a towel for approximately one hour to make sure that no dripping occurs.
  • Some people like to wipe the interior of the humidor with a damp cloth, if you do this make sure you use a clean, lint-free cloth dampened with distilled water and take care not to leave the surface wet. This step can be skipped if you are afraid of damaging the cedar interior, as may happen if the wood becomes too wet. If you subject raw wood to water it may swell, crack or otherwise become compromised.
  • Leave a damp sponge in the humidor resting on a plastic bag. Make sure there is no direct contact between the sponge and the humidor. Instead of a sponge you may also use a shot glass full of water.
  • Attach the humidifiers and the hygrometer to the inside of the lid. Also, place the humidifiers in the bottom holders of the humidor if applicable.
  • Close the empty humidor for at least twelve hours or overnight.
  • Open the humidor and remove the sponge and the plastic bag. Close the humidor.
  • Your humidor is ready to store cigars when the hygrometer reads over 65%. This can take a few days or up to a week depending on various factors. When placing cigars in the humidor, make sure the cigars do not block the humidifier’s vents.

To check if the hygrometer is reading correctly, an efficient and cheap way to do it is to use the salt method to test its calibration. This test is good though can be less accurate. You just need to:

  • Place some salt in a bottle cap or small cup and dampen it with a few drops of water (without dissolving it).
  • Carefully place the wet salt and the hygrometer inside a see-through container and close tightly. You can use a zip lock bag provided it seals well and you leave some air inside as well.
  • Let it sit for at least 6 hours and note the reading on the hygrometer without opening the container. It should be exactly 75%, the difference is how much your hygrometer is off.
  • If needed, adjust the needle to 75% by turning the screw on the back.

If you follow these instructions correctly you should have a stable humidor that will keep your cigars in perfect smoking conditions for a very long time.

How to use a Cigar Humidor

A cigar humidor is a box or any kind of container in which the humidity level is controlled in order to create the ideal environment for storing cigars or tobacco. In this simple guide, we tell you everything you need to know about using a humidor to keep your cigars in prime condition.

What is a cigar humidor?

In order to retain the optimum flavour and strength of your cigars, it’s essential you keep them at a temperature as close as possible to 21 °C with near 70% humidity. This is best done using a cigar humidor.

How does a cigar humidor work?

A cigar humidor is designed to mimic the ambient climate required to keep cigars at their best. Storing your cigars in a humidor will ensure they mature well over time. Much like a fine wine, cigars are at their best when they’ve been given a chance to age, but they have to be stored correctly at the proper temperature and humidity, or else they will rapidly lose their freshness and quality.

Cigar humidor

How do you prepare a humidor?

Don’t make the common mistake of stacking a humidor full of  cigars  immediately. It needs to be properly prepared in order to function properly.

Before you begin to prepare your humidor, ensure you have all the necessary materials to hand. These include:

  • A hygrometer (a device which measures moisture)
  • Distilled water
  • Plastic bag

If you wish, you could choose to use a complete  humidor hydrating kit , which includes everything you need to prepare your humidor prior to use.

You need to ensure your hygrometer is calibrated correctly to measure moisture. To do so:

  • Dampen a cloth with warm water
  • Wrap the hygrometer in the damp cloth. Leave for half an hour
  • Remove the hygrometer from the damp cloth
  • Calibrate it to read between 95% and 97%
  • If the hygrometer already reads between 95% and 97%, it is ready to use and you do not need to calibrate it

The next step in preparing your humidor is to clean it, if this is necessary. If your humidor is new, it may not need cleaning, but if it has been used previously, you’ll need to remove any tobacco.

To do so, simply spray the inside of the humidor with compressed air, then wipe around the interior of the humidor with a soft cloth.

Next, you will need to season the humidor.

How to set up and use a humidor

  • Submerge the humidifier fully in a bowl of distilled water. Do not use tap water as it can damage the element
  • Keep the humidifier submerged, face down, for up to 3 minutes
  • Remove the humidifier from the bowl, then wipe away any excess water
  • Line the bottom of your humidor with a plastic bag
  • Dampen a sponge with distilled water then place the sponge on top of the plastic bag
  • Place the hygrometer and humidifier in the lid of the humidor
  • Close the lid of the humidor, then leave it closed for 12 – 24 hours. The longer you can leave it, the better
  • Repeat this process
  • The humidity level should now be between 65% and 75%, ready to store your cigars

How to Charge a Cigar Humidifer

In order to ensure your humidor remains at optimum humidity, you will need to charge your humidifier at intervals:

  • Remove the humidifier from the humidor
  • Using the grate, squirt a specialist humidifying solution, or plain distilled water, into the humidifier. Only use a small amount of liquid, as the aim is to moisten the humidifier, not soak it through
  • Using a dry cloth, wipe any excess solution from the front of the unit
  • Replace the humidifier in the lid of the humidor

Taking care of your humidor

To ensure your humidor lasts and functions well, you will need to care for it properly. Some handy hints include:

  • Store your humidor where there’s no risk of it being knocked over
  • Keep your humidor out of direct sunlight
  • Use a soft cloth and beeswax polish to clean your humidor
  • Do not use water on your humidor, as the wood will be damaged. A damp cloth will suffice

Taking care of your cigars

  • An easy way of checking if your cigars are in an optimum condition is to press your thumb below the band. They should be firm to the touch, but spring back when you press them. If they don’t spring back then they are not humidified enough. If they feel soft and spongy, they’re over humidified
  • Over humidifying can result in a white, powdery ‘bloom’ forming on your cigars. Whilst this is not harmful, it is unsightly and can easily be removed. You can simply brush the mould away from top to bottom using a shaving or pastry brush
  • Ensure you rotate the layers of cigars from top to bottom from time to time if you don’t smoke them often
  • Don’t store anything but cigars in your humidor. Your lighter , cigar cutter and any additional  cigar accessories  should be stored separately so as not to damage your cigars.

How to Set Up and Maintain a Humidor

How to Set Up and Maintain a Humidor

Jun 20, 2019

PUBLISHED: JUNE-19-2019

WARNING: If you haven’t seasoned your humidor yet, DON’T ADD YOUR CIGARS YET.

Now that you have your humidor season, it is time to get your humidor to the ideal humidity and temperature. Having the ideal humidor humidity will keep your cigars delicious for a long time while preventing tobacco beetles. Keep reading to learn what temperature and humidity to keep your humidor and how to maintain that after seasoning.

Shop NewAir Humidors

The best humidity for cigars.

The rule of thumb everyone will tell you is a 70% relative humidity (RH) and 70°F is the best cigar humidity. You will see this called the 70/70 rule. If you have one of NewAir’s Opti-Temp™ humidors, read no further!

Not all humidors have the ability to heat and cool to ensure the perfect temperature year round. If that sounds like you or you want to learn about other cigar preferences, read on.

For temperature conditions that fluctuate throughout the year, you will want to be able to track temp/humidity level to know when you have to make changes. When the temp starts to rise, you’ll want to lower the RH. The opposite is true when it starts getting colder.

Advanced tips : A higher RH will soften your cigars and can cause burn problems. A lower RH will make your cigars will feel a bit firmer. Be careful, too low of a temperature and humidity will eventually ruin your cigars, causing them to be too dry, and even cause tobacco beetles. Lastly, high end cigars and cigars with thick wrappers, like Cubans or Dominicans, say that they fare better at a lower RH, closer to around 65%. This is most likely due to the higher amount of oils in the wrapper leaf.

Due to this, some long-time cigar smokers prefer to keep their humidor as low as 65 degrees F with 67% RH. Feel free to gradually play around with the temp and RH to get the perfect burn and feel from your cigars. Try to keep your humidor below 73°F (23°C) and between 65-74% RH though.

How to keep a humidor at 70 degrees

With the information you just gained, we can finish how to properly set up a humidor. We have had our NewAir humidor independently tested to take the guesswork out of it for you. The testing were done with Boveda 69% RH 60g humidity bags.

Test results show you will need three for our 250 cigar capacity humidors (CC-100H and CC-100) and six for our 400 cigar capacity humidors (CC300 and CC-300H).

Maintenance Instructions

  • Place unwrapped Boveda 69% humidity bags in your cigar humidor
  • Add your cigar collection. Note: Boveda is safe to touch your cigars.
  • Close the humidor, you are finished

Boveda humidity packs last 2-3 months so be sure to keep a close eye on the humidity of your humidor after a couple of months.

The process will be similar for none Boveda humidification devices like green foam, gel, pillow, beads and electronic humidifiers. Get the correct RH humidifier product and add to your humidor as the package instructs.

In addition to this, it also employs an individual leather pouch for securing your humidity pack inside the humidor.

Priced right at $70, the CiTree humidor includes both a metal cigar cutter and a triple-jet lighter, both of which are designed to be stored in their individual leather pockets. All in all, this is an excellent travel humidor for your cigars if what you need is a fashionable case in which to carry the cigars you’ll smoke in a single session.

  • Finish:  None
  • Humidifier: Yes
  • Count:  Small [4], Medium [20], Large [60]

While not strictly a travel humidor, Boveda’s humidor bags are very versatile indeed. The small version can contain three or four cigars, while we’ve managed to squeeze several boxes in the larger ones.

Indeed, these don’t offer much in the way of protection. However, either fit an entire cigar box in a large bag or even place a smaller bag in another container. As they come with Boveda packs, they’re fully equipped and can provide a year’s worth of humidity if used correctly.

We regularly rely on Boveda’s humidity packs as reliable and cheap storage. As such, we can’t rate them enough!

3. Davidoff Travel Humidor [Luxury Travel Humidor]

Davidoff Travel Humidor

  • Country Of Origin:  Italy
  • Lining: None
  • Finish:  Fabric & Leather
  • Price:  $280 [ Buy From Davidoff ]

Davidoff’s lavish Italian-made travel humidor is constructed from knitted Jacquard fabric and leather that is welded together for an airtight seal. A pull-out tray is designed with a flexible wave design to protect each cigar while a hidden magnetic clasp seals it shut.

Davidoff travel humidors used to be supplied with their own humidity packs, though there have since been replaced by Boveda packs. The above one pictured is a limited Churchill edition, but there are plenty of other designs available.

You can read more about it with our full, detailed review of the Davidoff travel humidor .

4. Colibri Explorer [Premium Travel Case]

Colibri Leather Travel Humidor With Cigars

  • Country Of Origin:  Unknown
  • Lining: Leather
  • Finish: Saffiano Leather
  • Price:  $290 [ Buy Now On Amazon ]

A more reasonably-sized luxury travel humidor, the Colibri Explorer offers a superior seal than the more affordable Lagute below. Capable of holding up to 12 Churchill cigars, it is made from Saffiano leather.

5. Lagute Travel Humidor [Elegant & Affordable]

Lagute Leather Travel Humidor

  • Finish:  Leather
  • Price:  $45 [ Buy Now On Amazon ]

If you’re planning to attend an event where you’ll be smoking cigars, the Lagute Goucho is an excellent accessory. Unlike other travel humidors, it’s very elegant with its leather exterior and cedar wood lining.

However, this isn’t ideal for storage over a long period of time. Firstly, it’s limited to only 6 cigars, which isn’t very many. While the zipper and seal on this are better than most leather cases, they aren’t airtight, so some moisture will escape over time.

6. Xikar 50-80 [Largest Travel Humidor]

Xikar 50-80 Travel Humidor

  • Lining: Foam
  • Finish:  ABS Moulded Plastic
  • Hygrometer: Yes
  • Count:  50 – 80
  • Price:  $70 [ Buy Now On Amazon ]

If you’re looking to transport a large quantity of cigars, Xikar’s 50-80 travel humidor is an excellent choice. Crushproof and airtight, the high-density urethane foam carefully protects your cigars.

We’d throw out the foam humidifier supplied with this and replace it with a few 60g Boveda packs . Remember to use one for every 25 cigar capacities, as mentioned above. Otherwise, this is probably the best heavy-duty travel humidor for large quantities.

7. Cigar Caddy 3540 [Versatile Travel Humidor]

Two Different Cigar Caddy Models

  • $38.95 [ Buy On Mike’s Cigars ]
  • $39.95 [ Buy Now On Amazon ]

One of the most common travel humidor designs that was popularised by Herf-a-dor, Cigar Caddy is probably one of the most reliable today. With its airtight seal, it floats on water but is still waterproof up to 100 feet.

We would recommend this larger one that can contain 15 Churchill cigars, as the smaller models provide less versatility in terms of storage. Furthermore, we don’t use the supplied humidifier but rely on Boveda packs instead.

8. Amancy Leather [Affordable Travel Humidor]

Amancy Leather Travel Humidor

  • Lining:  Cedar
  • Finish: Genuine Leather
  • Hygrometer: Analogue
  • Count:  3 – 5
  • Price:  $23 [ Buy Now On Amazon ]

This is another great travel humidor for attending events. It offers a great seal and its cedar lining absorbs some moisture for long-term performance. However, we’re not sure if it’s Spanish cedar, so don’t expect the same benefits.

While it can contain up to 5 cigars, this largely depends on the vitola. We find that it’s complicated with larger-gauge cigars, and you’ll probably only fit two or three cigars above 50 RG.

We also threw out the foam humidifier and just used Boveda packs. This also helps cushion the cigars and prevent them from rolling around inside the tube.

This is also the only travel humidor with a hygrometer. While the analogue hygrometer isn’t going to be very accurate, it’s still a nice decorative touch and gives you a fair idea when calibrated.

Why Buy A Travel Humidor For Your Cigars?

Different Cigar Travel Humidors

Therefore, they’re not for long-term storage but for short periods of transit or stays away from home. Nevertheless, travel humidors aren’t exclusive to jet setters and can be an invaluable tool for even the shortest trips.

For instance, if you’re heading out and want to take some cigars with you, they offer the best protection and environment for your cigars. While small cases tend to be quite attractive, travel humidors are more robust and will provide more space.

Whether you’re heading to an event, seeing some friends, or you’re even buying cigars from a shop, they’re a great way to transport them safely. As such, travel humidors are a truly handy accessory for every cigar enthusiast.

Cigar Travel Humidor Benefits

Cigar Locker Travel Humidor

Firstly, they need to offer an airtight seal so the necessary interior environment can be created. If they’re not airtight, they won’t retain the moisture provided by your humidifier of choice.

Furthermore, the humidor should be made from lightweight materials that are easy to carry. Yet, the materials need to be robust enough to resist shocks or being crushed.

Similarly, superior travel humidors are not only extremely crush-proof but also waterproof. After all, you never know what could happen when travelling, and it’s certainly a reassuring feature if you’re heading out to the beach.

All travel humidors should have strong latches to prevent accidental openings when carried or in your luggage. Meanwhile, some larger quality humidors will also feature locking mechanisms with combinations or a key so they can be securely stored without fear of wandering sticks.

Finally, some of the better, more advanced travel humidors will feature safety valves for air travel. Given that you may be leaving them in your checked luggage, you can open the valve beforehand to avoid the box breaking under low pressure.

Lagute Leather Travel Humidor

As such, they tend to underperform and are really only viable if you intend to smoke the cigars sooner rather than later. However, this doesn’t necessarily speak for all travel humidors as there are some good ones on the market. Just make sure that you’re buying quality rather than an attractive design or low price.

Another common issue among travel humidors is that they tend to offer little storage space compared to their size. Unfortunately, this is partly out of necessity.

The majority of travel humidors are filled with Ester, Polyethylene, or Pro-Cell foam to secure and cushion the cigars. However, this is a double-edged sword as it leaves little space is left for the cigars themselves, let alone the humidifier or hygrometer!

Nevertheless, the foam has an important function in that it prevents the cigars from being loose inside the container, which could cause them to damage one another.

Still, this may sometimes result in not having enough space for your cigars. Consequently, people may try to overfill their travel humidors, we could actually crush them from the inside!

Buying A Travel Humidor: What To Look

When looking for a travel humidor, consider reading some of our tips to make sure that you buy the right one to suit your needs.

Consider Alternatives

Boveda Large Cigar Humidor Bag

As they’re available in a number of different sizes, you can store as little as a few cigars to even a couple of boxes in a single bag. When travelling with entire boxes, you can easily slip these into a larger bag, which is perfectly secure in itself.

However, if you just have a few cigars, simply put them in a smaller bag and then place the bag itself in a harder box for protection. Not only is this perfectly sufficient, but it offers a better environment for your cigars than most travel humidors .

Finally, despite their appearance, Boveda bags aren’t simply branded ziplock bags with an included Boveda pack. In fact, they’re made from barrier-laminated plastic with an airtight enclosure. Meanwhile, regular ziplock bags do lose moisture over time and aren’t as reliable as we like to think.

Otherwise, you could even consider a small tupperdor for travelling . While less attractive, it’s certainly cheaper and more effective than the majority of travel humidors on the market.

Inspect The Seal & Latches

Cigar Caddy Travel Humidors

The best way to do this is by simply throwing in a humidifier with a hygrometer and closing it. Once set up, periodically check the humidity to see whether it’s consistent. If it’s too low or fluctuates, then you likely have a leak.

Of course, the humidifier may be over-performing in order to compensate for the leak, and you may not notice a drop in relative humidity. Therefore, the best way to do this is over a long period of time as we did with ours.

If it retains water, then there’s a good chance that it also holds air.

Finally, the quickest and easiest way to check the seals is by closing it and giving it a squeeze if made from ABS moulded plastic. If it hisses when squeezed, then it’ll likely leak air even when under no pressure.

Finally, consider checking the latches as well as the seals. Some cheaper travel humidors come with loose or weak latches that break. If the latches are unreliable, there’s a high chance that the humidor could pop open and expose the cigars.

Check The Foam Type

Travel Humidor Foam

  • Ester: Probably the best foam for cigars, Ester offers an excellent cushion that protects delicate objects that can break under impact. Its cushioning is flexible and can store irregular-shaped objects.
  • Polythylene:  Absorbs more shock than Ester and is made for heavier objects, PE is a great foam for most uses.
  • Pro-Cell:  With its refined finish, Pro-Cell is better for displays. It’s more delicate than the other foams but is surprisingly dense.

There are also different cuts and shapes to the foam. You can opt for foams that have a flat finish, which is generally better for smaller, flatter humidors. Otherwise, there is also the convoluted, egg-crate-shaped foam that offers better protection.

Some travel humidors may actually have piped foam to give you a pre-shaped space for placing your cigars.

Use A Quality Humidifier

320g & 60g Boveda Humidity Packs

Your choice of humidifier for travelling will need to fulfil three requirements:

  • Compact size
  • Two-Way Humidity
  • Low Chance Of leakage

Firstly, the humidifier needs to be compact because of the small space available. As mentioned above, there is usually little space for the cigars themselves, so a chunk humidifier may take up too much.

Meanwhile, traditional humidification devices are usually charged with liquid, whether they’re based on gels, beads or foam. As such, they may have a tendency to leak all over your cigars.

Last but not least, most of these traditional devices offer only one-way humidification. This means that they continually release moisture close to them, which doesn’t diffuse. This can easily cause over-humidification in such a small and, hopefully, airtight space.

As such, two-way humidification ensures that excess moisture is absorbed when the humidity goes over a certain level. Meanwhile, it will diffuse it only when necessary.

For all the reasons mentioned above, we largely favour Boveda’s humidity packs. Not only do they come in more modest sizes for travel humidors, but they are also completely hassle-free. Their membrane lining is very hard-wearing and resistant to breaking, and the packs provide two-way humidity control.

Their small  8g Boveda humidity packs  are conveniently sized and provide enough humidity for 5 to 10 cigars. However, we tend to go for the typical 60g humidity packs as they’re still relatively small and tend to offer the best performance and value for money.

Buy Larger Than Necessary

Finally, we’ve already mentioned several times that travel humidors have a deceptively small storage capacity compared to their size. As such, it’s always worth keeping this in mind when buying your travel humidor.

Firstly, their labelled count capacity may refer to smaller vitolas than you’re intending to carry. It’s quite disappointing to find that your case can only carry 5 robustos when you want to transport 6 Churchills!

Secondly, you may only want to carry a few with you when buying the humidor. However, you may want to carry even more in the future. Unless you’re planning to buy a different travel humidor for every possible scenario, consider buying one that can contain more than you need.

Finally, care should be taken not to overfill a travel humidor. If you compress the foam too tightly, it will absorb shock but put the cigars under unnecessary pressure. An overfilled travel humidor may even crush the cigars if you’re not careful!

Travel Humidor Preparation & Maintenance

Unless made from cedar, which will require seasoning , travel humidors are generally very low maintenance.

CiTree Cigar Humidor Inside View With Lighter & Cutter

Our only advice would be to place your humidifier inside the humidor for a short time before placing the cigars. This ensures that the environment is well-prepared and that the foam can absorb any humidity if necessary.

Discover the Secrets to Successfully Using a Humidor Box to Preserve and Enhance the Flavor of Your Cigars

For all cigar aficionados, a humidor box is an essential accessory to keep your cigars fresh and flavorful. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced smoker, knowing how to properly use a humidor box is crucial to preserving the quality of your cigars. In this step-by-step guide, we will walk you through the process of maintaining the perfect conditions for storing your cigars.

Step 1:  Prepare the humidor box by wiping the interior with a clean cloth lightly dampened with distilled water. This step is essential to remove any dust or residue that may have accumulated during storage or shipping. Ensure that the humidor box is completely dry before proceeding to the next step.

Step 2:  Season the humidor box to create the ideal environment for your cigars. This process involves introducing moisture into the wood to maintain a relative humidity level of around 70 percent. Place a small container filled with distilled water inside the humidor box and close the lid. Allow the humidor box to sit undisturbed for 24 to 48 hours, ensuring that the water container is periodically refilled when necessary.

Step 3:  Once the humidor box is properly seasoned, it’s time to arrange your cigars inside. Place the cigars in the humidor box with the foot facing the front, ensuring that there is enough space between each cigar to allow for proper airflow. If you have different types of cigars, consider using dividers to separate them and prevent any flavor mixing.

Step 4:  Monitor the humidity levels regularly by using a hygrometer, which measures the humidity inside the humidor box. Ideally, the humidity should be maintained at around 70 percent, but it’s essential to check and make adjustments as needed. Add distilled water to the container or use a humidification device if the humidity level drops below the recommended range.

Step 5:  Finally, maintain your humidor box by periodically checking for any signs of mold or mildew. Inspect the cigars for any damage or pests that may have found their way into the box. It’s also important to rotate your cigars occasionally to ensure even aging and flavor distribution.

Following this step-by-step guide will help you get the most out of your humidor box and ensure that your cigars are always in optimal condition. Remember, proper cigar storage is key to enjoying the rich flavors and aromas that cigar enthusiasts treasure. So invest in a high-quality humidor box and elevate your cigar smoking experience!

How to Properly Prepare a Humidor Box

Before you can start storing and aging your cigars in a humidor box, it is important to properly prepare the box to create an optimal environment for your cigars. Follow these steps to ensure that your humidor box is ready to provide the perfect conditions for your cigars:

1. Season the humidor box:  This is a crucial step in maintaining the proper moisture levels inside the box. To season the humidor, dampen a clean sponge or cloth with distilled water and wipe down the interior of the box, including the cedar lining. Be careful not to oversaturate the wood – it should be slightly damp, not wet. Close the humidor and let it sit for 24 to 48 hours to allow the cedar to absorb the moisture.

2. Calibrate the hygrometer:  The hygrometer is an essential tool for monitoring the humidity levels inside the humidor. Before using it, it is important to calibrate it to ensure its accuracy. To calibrate the hygrometer, place it in a sealed bag or container along with a salt solution (made by mixing table salt and distilled water). Leave it for 24 hours, and the hygrometer should read 75%. If it does not, adjust the reading accordingly using the calibration screw or knob.

3. Add a humidification device:  To maintain the desired humidity level, you will need a humidification device, such as a humidifier or beads. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions to properly install and set up the device inside the humidor. Make sure to use distilled water to fill the humidifier to prevent mineral buildup that could affect the quality of your cigars.

4. Arrange the cigars:  Before placing your cigars in the humidor, make sure they are properly prepared. Remove any cellophane wrapping and check for any damaged or moldy cigars. Arrange the cigars neatly in the humidor, ensuring that there is enough airflow between each cigar for proper aging. It is also a good idea to rotate the cigars regularly to promote even aging.

5. Monitor and maintain:  Once your humidor box is prepared and your cigars are stored inside, it is important to monitor and maintain the humidity level regularly. Check the hygrometer regularly to ensure that it reads within the desired range (typically between 65% and 75%). If the humidity level drops, add distilled water to the humidification device as needed to maintain the proper moisture level.

Step 1: Cleaning and Seasoning the Humidor Box

Before using your humidor box to store cigars, it’s crucial to clean and season the box properly. This process helps to remove any odors, impurities, or unwanted flavors from the wood, ensuring that your cigars are stored in an optimal environment.

Follow these steps to clean and season your humidor box:

  • Empty the box of any cigars, accessories, or loose tobacco.
  • Using a soft cloth or sponge, dampen it with distilled water. Avoid using tap water as it can contain impurities that may affect the aging process of cigars.
  • Gently wipe down the interior of the humidor box, including the walls, dividers, and lid. Ensure that all surfaces are cleaned thoroughly.
  • After cleaning, leave the humidor box open to air dry for at least 24 hours. This will allow any excess moisture to evaporate and prevent mold or mildew buildup.
  • Once the box is dry, prepare a clean cloth or sponge with distilled water again.
  • Place the damp cloth or sponge inside a small dish or container and put it in the humidor box.
  • Close the lid of the box and let it sit for 24-48 hours. This process will help to season the humidor box by slowly introducing moisture into the wood.
  • After the seasoning period, remove the cloth or sponge from the box.
  • Inspect the interior of the box to ensure it feels slightly humid but not wet.

Once you’ve completed these steps, your humidor box is now clean and properly seasoned, ready to provide a suitable environment for storing and aging your precious cigars.

Step 2: Selecting and Arranging Cigars in the Humidor

Once you have properly seasoned your humidor and it is ready for use, the next step is to carefully select and arrange your cigars inside the humidor. This is an important step to ensure that your cigars remain in optimal condition and maintain their flavors.

When selecting cigars for your humidor, it is recommended to choose high-quality cigars that you enjoy smoking. Look for cigars with good construction, smooth wrapper, and well-aged tobacco. You can also consider the strength and flavor profile of the cigars to cater to your personal preferences.

Before placing the cigars in the humidor, it is advisable to remove any cellophane or plastic wrapping from the cigars. This will allow the cigars to better absorb moisture from the humidor and promote a more even distribution of humidity.

When arranging the cigars, it is essential to take care not to overcrowd the humidor. Overcrowding can restrict airflow and create uneven humidity levels. Leave enough space between each cigar to allow for proper air circulation.

It is best to organize the cigars in the humidor based on size and strength. Place larger cigars at the bottom and smaller ones on top. This will prevent any potential damage to the cigars and ensure that they are easily accessible for selection.

You can also use dividers or cedar trays to separate different types or brands of cigars within the humidor. This will help maintain the individual characteristics of each cigar and prevent any flavors from mingling together.

Lastly, make sure to maintain a hygrometer in your humidor to monitor the humidity levels. This will enable you to make any necessary adjustments to ensure the cigars are kept in ideal conditions.

By carefully selecting and arranging your cigars in the humidor, you can enhance their aging process and enjoy a truly satisfying smoking experience.

Step 3: Maintaining Humidity and Temperature Levels

Once you have properly seasoned your humidor box, it is crucial to maintain the correct humidity and temperature levels to ensure that your cigars stay in optimal condition. Here are some important steps to follow:

1. Use a Hygrometer

To monitor the humidity levels inside your humidor, it is essential to use a hygrometer. This device measures the relative humidity and lets you know if the levels are too high or too low. Place the hygrometer inside the humidor box, preferably near the cigars, and make sure to calibrate it to ensure accurate readings.

2. Add Distilled Water or Humidification Solution

To maintain the desired humidity level, you will need to add distilled water or a humidification solution to the humidor box. This process will depend on the type of humidifier you have. If you have an active humidification system, follow the manufacturer’s instructions for adding water or solution. For passive humidification systems, you can use a small container filled with distilled water or a humidification cartridge.

Tip:  Make sure to check the humidity levels regularly and replenish the water or solution as needed. You want to aim for a relative humidity of around 65-70% for most cigars.

3. Control the Temperature

Temperature is another essential factor to consider when storing cigars. Ideally, the temperature inside the humidor box should be around 65-70 degrees Fahrenheit (18-21 degrees Celsius). Avoid placing the humidor in areas with extreme temperature fluctuations or direct sunlight, as these can negatively impact the cigars’ quality.

Tip:  If your environment tends to be too hot or cold, consider using a temperature-controlled humidor or placing the humidor in a cool and dark location to maintain a consistent temperature.

By following these steps, you can ensure that your humidor box maintains the proper humidity and temperature levels, keeping your cigars in optimal condition and ready to be enjoyed.

Step 4: Regularly Checking and Rotating Cigars

Properly maintaining your cigars requires regular checking and rotating. This helps to ensure an even distribution of humidity and temperature within your humidor box.

Check for any signs of damage or mold

Inspect your cigars periodically for any signs of damage or mold. Look for any cracks or splits on the wrappers, which can affect the flavor and quality of your cigars. In addition, check for any white mold on the cigars, as this can indicate poor humidity control.

If you find any damaged or moldy cigars, remove them from your humidor box immediately to prevent further contamination.

Rotate your cigars

Regularly rotating your cigars helps to prevent uneven aging and drying. It ensures that all your cigars receive equal exposure to the humidity and temperature in the humidor box.

To rotate your cigars, simply move the cigars from the bottom of the box to the top, and vice versa. This helps to distribute the moisture and flavors evenly throughout your collection.

It is recommended to rotate your cigars every 2-3 weeks to maintain their quality and flavor.

By regularly checking and rotating your cigars, you can ensure that they stay in optimal condition and provide a satisfying smoking experience every time.

Step 5: Properly Sealing the Humidor Box

Properly sealing your humidor box is crucial for maintaining the ideal environment for your cigars. A well-sealed humidor box ensures that the humidity stays at the desired level and prevents any moisture from escaping or entering.

Here are the steps to properly seal your humidor box:

By following these steps and properly sealing your humidor box, you can ensure that your cigars stay fresh and flavorful for a long time. Remember to periodically check the seal and reapply the beeswax or sealant if necessary.

Step 6: Enjoying and Sharing Your Perfectly Stored Cigars

After properly storing your cigars in a humidor box and allowing them to age, it’s time to sit back, relax, and enjoy the fruits of your labor. Whether you’re a seasoned cigar aficionado or new to the world of cigars, following these steps will ensure that you have the best smoking experience possible.

1. Choosing the Perfect Moment

Before lighting up your cigar, it’s important to choose the perfect moment to fully savor the experience. Find a quiet and comfortable space where you can take your time and enjoy the flavors and aromas of the cigar without any distractions. Consider pairing your cigar with a favorite drink, such as a glass of whiskey or a fine wine, to enhance the overall experience.

2. Preparing Your Cigar

Before you light your cigar, make sure to cut the cap with a sharp cigar cutter. The cut should be clean and straight to ensure a smooth and even draw. Avoid cutting too much of the cigar, as this can cause unraveling. Once your cigar is properly cut, gently remove the cap with your fingers or a small tool to open up the draw.

Next, gently toast the foot of the cigar by rotating it above the flame, without touching the fire directly. This will help to prepare the tobacco for lighting. Once the foot is evenly toasted, bring the cigar to your lips and take a slow and steady draw while holding the flame directly under the foot. The goal is to create an even burn across the entire cigar.

3. Relaxing and Sharing

Now that your cigar is properly lit, it’s time to sit back, relax, and enjoy the moment. Take slow and deliberate draws, allowing the flavors and aromas to fully develop on your palate. Let the smoke linger before exhaling to fully appreciate the nuances of the cigar.

Smoking a cigar can also be a social experience. Consider sharing the moment with friends or fellow cigar enthusiasts. Engage in conversation and share your thoughts on the flavors and notes you’re experiencing. The camaraderie that comes with enjoying a cigar together can enhance the overall enjoyment of the experience.

Remember, smoking a cigar is meant to be a leisurely activity. Take your time, savor the flavors, and enjoy the craftsmanship that went into creating a perfect cigar. With proper storage and preparation, each cigar in your humidor box will provide a memorable and satisfying smoking experience.

Question-answer: How to use a humidor box

How does a cigar humidor work to maintain the optimal environment for a cigar smoker’s collection.

A cigar humidor works by maintaining a stable relative humidity (RH) level, typically around 70%, using materials like Spanish cedar to absorb and release moisture, along with a humidifier that uses water and propylene glycol to regulate humidity. This environment ensures that cigars are preserved at ideal conditions, preventing them from drying out or becoming too moist.

What is the importance of Spanish cedar in humidors, and how does it benefit the cigar collection?

Spanish cedar is crucial in humidors as it helps regulate humidity, imparts a pleasant aroma that enhances the tobacco’s flavor, and repels tobacco beetles, thus protecting the integrity and quality of the cigar collection.

How should you properly season a new humidor to ensure it’s ready to store your cigar collection?

To properly season a new humidor, you should wipe the inside of the humidor with distilled water, place a shallow container of distilled water inside, and close the lid. Over a few days, the Spanish cedar will absorb the moisture, ensuring the humidor is adequately humidified before you place your cigars inside.

When setting up your humidor for the first time, what steps should you take to ensure it’s ready for storing cigars?

Setting up your humidor for the first time involves seasoning the humidor with distilled water and propylene glycol to ensure the Spanish cedar is properly humidified. You should also calibrate your hygrometer to monitor the RH levels and adjust the humidifier as needed to maintain around 70% RH and 70 degrees Fahrenheit.

How do Boveda packs assist in maintaining the RH inside of the humidor, and why are they recommended for a good humidor?

Boveda packs provide a hassle-free way to maintain the RH inside of the humidor. They release or absorb moisture as needed to maintain a specific RH level, which is ideal for a good humidor as they require no maintenance, prevent fluctuations, and ensure a consistent environment for humidifying your cigars.

Why is it important to keep your humidor at a certain size relative to your cigar collection, and how can a travel humidor be beneficial?

It’s important to keep your humidor at a size relative to your cigar collection because a humidor that’s too large or too small can lead to humidity imbalances. A travel humidor is beneficial as it provides a controlled environment for a small number of cigars, protecting them from damage while you’re on the move.

What are the risks of using tap water instead of distilled water and propylene glycol inside of your humidor, and how can this ruin your cigars?

Using tap water instead of distilled water and propylene glycol can introduce impurities and minerals that can clog the humidifier and promote mold growth. This can lead to an unstable RH inside of the humidor and potentially ruin your cigars by causing mold or affecting their flavor.

How often should you open your humidor, and what are the implications for the cigars inside the cigar humidor if opened too frequently?

You should open your humidor sparingly, ideally only when adding or taking out cigars. Frequently opening the humidor can lead to fluctuations in humidity and temperature, which can dry out the cigars or cause them to absorb excess moisture, potentially ruining their flavor and structure.

When buying a humidor for the first time, what key features should cigar lovers look for to ensure they are purchasing a quality humidor?

When buying a first humidor, cigar lovers should look for quality construction with good seals to prevent air leaks, Spanish cedar lining for optimal humidity control, a reliable humidifier and hygrometer, and sufficient space to accommodate their cigar collection as it grows.

How does prepping your humidor properly protect against tobacco beetle infestations, and what role does maintaining 70 degrees Fahrenheit play in this?

Prepping your humidor properly by maintaining around 70% RH and 70 degrees Fahrenheit is crucial in preventing tobacco beetle infestations. Tobacco beetles thrive in higher temperatures and humidity levels, so keeping the conditions inside your humidor controlled discourages their growth and protects your cigars from potential damage.

As a cigar smoker, why is it important to properly season a humidor, especially when the humidor is new, and how does this process affect the cigars you’re using?

Seasoning a new humidor is crucial for a cigar smoker because it prepares the humidor to maintain the correct humidity levels, essential for preserving the cigars’ flavor and freshness. This process involves saturating the Spanish cedar interior of the box with water, allowing it to absorb moisture and establish an environment that can effectively regulate humidity. Without proper seasoning, the dry cedar would draw moisture from the cigars, causing them to dry out and potentially ruining their quality.

What steps should be taken to set up and use a cigar humidor to ensure it meets the humidor needs for keeping cigars in the best condition?

To set up and use a cigar humidor properly, first season the interior by wiping it with a damp cloth and then placing a dish of distilled water inside for a few days, allowing the wood to absorb the moisture. After seasoning, equip the humidor with a reliable cigar humidifier and hygrometer to regulate and monitor humidity levels. Store your humidor in a cool, stable environment away from direct sunlight. When adding new cigars, ensure that the size of the humidor can hold the number of cigars without overcrowding, allowing air to circulate freely and keep the cigars evenly humidified.

How do travel humidors work, and what considerations should a cigar smoker keep in mind to keep the cigars fresh while on the move?

Travel humidors work by providing a secure, airtight environment that maintains a consistent humidity level, even while on the move. They are typically smaller and more durable than traditional cigar humidors, making them convenient for transporting cigars. When using a travel humidor, a cigar smoker should ensure that the humidor is properly humidified before inserting cigars. Use a small, portable humidifier or humidity packs to maintain humidity, and avoid exposing the humidor to extreme temperatures or excess water. Regularly check the interior humidity with a hygrometer to ensure that the cigars remain in optimal condition.

Review: Herf-A-Dor Travel Humidor By Humi-Care

Updated: Oct 23, 2020

travel humidor instructions

While I enjoy the higher end luxury products as much as the next person it just is not realistic for me to always shop at the higher end. When picking a travel humidor I take a lot of things into consideration. First, the durability, then function, and finally Finally maintenance. These are three very important points that have to be addressed during the purchasing process. I am also very protective of my cigars. We taste them, rest them, store them, and maintain a perfect atmosphere in our home humidors to get the optimal smoke. Should't you travel with your cigars the same way?

Welcome to The Herf-a-Dor. This travel humidor is perfect for taking your sticks wherever you go. It has a nice foam lining and a humidifier built in although I do not use that, Cigars stay fresh and it will hold 5 Churchill sized cigars although other sizes will fit.

Here are the facts directly from the ad:

- Travel case

- Holds up to 5 Churchill cigars (7” x 50)

- Humidifier included

- Airtight seal to keep cigars fresh

- TSA friendly

- Comfortable foam to prevent crushing

- Carrying cord and carabineer

- Waterproof

- Sturdy frame (reinforced ABS frame)

-Also available in different capacity and cigar sizes

Initial Thoughts:

My initial thought was I want something with a luxury feels to it. I thought to myself this will travel with me everyday to and from work and get banged around and tossed in my car. I decided to take the chance and place the order. Once I received it I was impressed. It had a sturdy feel to it like a Pelican case. After opening it to inspect the inside there is a generous amount of foam that forms nicely to your cigars. The humidifier is there and functional.

The one I received had hard miles put on it. It constantly gets thrown in my backpack that travels around with me between working EMS and dispatching. It never has an easy day. It is constantly being opened and closed to either smoke or refill on a daily basis.

Durability:

I have to say for the beating this thing takes it has held up very well. With more drops, bumps, and bruises than I care to share the outer shell has a few scuff marks. It has not interrupted operation at all. It has remained airtight and waterproof. After a few weeks of hard use I did put a Govee digital Bluetooth hygrometer/thermometer inside of it. It stayed steady in the low 70's for humidity with the temperature only moving according to the outside temperature of where I had it. I also submerged it in water with cigars still inside. I held it under for one minutes. There was no water leakage. I don't expect it to ever be underwater besides this test, but in the interest of completion I had to do it.

Humidifier:

While there is a functional humidifier in the lid I do not use it. I have heard that after adding distilled water to keep humidity over time mold can form. This is not a good thing. I chose to add a smaller Boveda pack and that has done the trick.

Final Thoughts:

I have to be honest this is my everyday go to travel humidor and it will stay that way for a long time. For a sub $20 case you can't beat it. It does everything that it is suppose to .... and it does it well.

If your in the market for an everyday carry case that can take the abuse of any job I would recommend giving the Herf-A-Dor a try.
