Just wanted to write an official letter thanking you and Imagine for going the extra mile in making our Tour to Israel for Shepherd of the Hills Church a huge success. It was the first time that I had hosted 4 buses in one tour group with over 160 people all together.  From the schedule and itinerary to the food and accommodations, to the guides and the drivers, it was ALL run professionally and efficiently.  This was my 14th trip to Israel as a host and without question, this was the best of the 14. There was extra care to detail during this trip that I credit to you, to those who work in your office at Imagine as well as to those who worked in the office in Israel.  We literally in every way received the V.I.P. treatment.  As you know, when traveling with such a large group it is imperative to know that those working behind the scenes are there in support of your plans and ideas for a blessed trip.  I want to thank you personally for your attention to detail.  For you going the extra mile in every phase of this trip.  I wish to also thank, specifically, all the folks in your Israel office who worked tirelessly to insure all the logistics happened on time and without missing a beat. I can honestly tell you that without them, this would have been an impossible task, but with them, it was seamless and worry free. Looking forward to future trips with Imagine Tours.

Pastor Dudley R.

I want you to know that the journey we just went on was life changing.  Thanks so much for being a facilitator for this.  The guide “Ikey” and driver “Akram” were excellent.  They went way beyond the call of duty and met every need we had and so much more.  It was one of the best journeys I have ever taken, and I have been all over the World.  This was by far the most impacting of all the countries I have been to.  Thanks again.

I would like to take a few moments of your time to express my profound gratitude for all you and your company did to make our recent pilgrimage to Israel a resounding success. Our team of 29 travelers spent eight days in Israel.  imagine Tours did a fantastic job in helping me plan, organize, recruit travelers and ultimately lead this group.  When we initially began our dialogue in February of 2013, less than 12 persons had expressed an interest in going.  You said to expect 30.  I thought you were crazy.  Over the following months your projection was spot on and 30 persons did sign up to go.  You made each step of the journey enjoyable.  No question was ignored and your prompt responses to a myriad of ideas was greatly appreciated.  The accommodations while in Israel were also superb.  Each hotel was clean, neat, accommodating, comfortable and relaxing.  They provided delicious meals for both breakfast and dinner.  I loved the food.  From the personnel in your office in Florida, to the folks who met us at Ben Gurion, we were in capable hands.  Thank you.  I certainly look forward to traveling with you again.

The Faith Lutheran travelers have safely returned from our tour through Greece and Turkey.  Our walk in the Footsteps of Paul was wonderful!  I cannot say enough good things about our superb guides in Greece, Aliki and Yanni.  They were a joy to be with!  Helpful, knowledgeable, fun, and capable, they made our days in Greece memorable.  Everyone’s favorite hotel was the Lucy in Kavala.  It received universal rave reviews, and we all agreed that we would like to spend more time there.  Thank you for such a great experience in Christian travel.

Having helped plan itineraries for marvelous “heritage tours”of England, Scotland, Ireland and Scandinavia, I know the personal attention imagine Tours & Travel gives to every host pastor, and the unique destinations he works into almost every tour’s travel plan. Their imagination and flexibility are phenomenal, and guarantee an outstanding spiritual experience for every tour they organize.

Rev. Dr. William R.

I’ve used imagine Tours for two trips and plan to used them again and again. I have highly recommended them to many of my friends. Rick and his team responded quickly to my questions and concerns. They stayed in touch with us while on our trip. They treated me like I was their only client! Our team felt completely safe on our trip. The tour guide and driver were professional, knowledgeable and personable. They were always attentive to our needs and were flexible to our personal preferences. They cared about us. Their goal was to assure a fantastic experience for our team. For most people a trip to the Holy Land is a once in a lifetime trip. I have taken people all over the world and have used many tour companies. Switching to Imagine Tours was the smartest move I’ve made in a long time. On my last trip to Israel, I met another imagine tour group. The tour leader has made 65 trips to Israel and he switched to imagine Tours. Enough said.

Pastor Don B.

I recently returned from my first trip to Israel as a tour group leader. Wow! Everything about our tour exceeded my expectations. The meals were delicious with a buffet variety which pleased everyone. Our guide from imagine Tours and Travel, did an excellent job of discovering the interests of our group and applying his knowledge and communication skills to give us a wonderful experience. Several in my group mentioned that they were pleased with every aspect of our trip and pleasantly surprised that they never felt unsafe during our entire trip. Even my wife, who is apprehensive of travel to a foreign country, was comfortable the whole time in Israel and definitely wants to join me on the next tour to Israel. No one in our group will ever be the same after our life changing trip!

Pastor Steve D.

Dear Prospective Program Leader, I have been leading numerous study tours in various parts of the world with several travel agencies over the years of my long academic carrier. However, in the past ten plus years, I have conducted such programs exclusively with imagine Tours & Travel. I have found their services to be reliable and efficient, their prices competitive, and their client relationships to be courteous. As program leader, I feel confident in placing my groups in their competent, secure care and in being spared the concerns and vexations that often plague group travels abroad. I recommend Imagine without reservation.

Dr. Gilbert B.

I regret that I didn’t take this trip earlier in my ministry, ten or twenty years ago.  It has enlivened sermons and Bible studies and brought great joy to many aspects of ministry.  This is a trip that will always be treasured.

Pastor Nathan B.

Our group had a fabulous trip to Greece and Italy at the end of April. We strongly urge anyone and everyone to take this trip. Working with Rick and his team was so worth it — they take care of everything and are so accomodating.  Top notch guides … fabulous Biblical and Christian sites … great accomodations … can’t say enough about how enjoyable it was.  Find out for yourself by booking with imagine.

I would give this company zero stars if I could. This is not a reputable company. They charged $500 per person for a cancelation fee on a trip that was booked 8 months in advance. They claimed that we agreed to this language, but we did not receive a brochure that included this. Nor did the representative - named David-- mention this significant cancelation fee in my email correspondence with him. I've used many travel companies over the years and have never experienced fees like this. DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY.

Photo of Kim L.

My mother and I were scheduled to go on a tour in Israel March 2024. The tour has been canceled and imagine tours held $300 per person as an administrative fee. When I questioned it, I was told that they checked with accounting and Because the leader of the tour canceled it, the administrative fee would apply. The reason why the leader of the tour canceled it is because war broke out in the area. Any tour company that handles unforeseen circumstances in this manner should be avoided at all costs.

The recent events in Israel caused us to cancel our tour with ITT. Within 2 weeks they had our refund sent back to us minus what was spelled out in the literature we received prior to signing up for the trip. Fair, honest and a pleasure to do business with. Thank you Caleb Oliver for all your hard work. Paul J.

This is the worse travel agency ever! My dream trip to Greece was a travel nightmare! The information we were given said it was an overnight trip. When we were mailed our travel documents ....the nightmare SURPRISE was that it was going to be 5 legs going (28 hours travel time) and 4 legs coming back. When our Pastor contacted that owner, we were told the flight had been cancelled and this was what it was and couldn't be changed.....with no heads up or discussion at all to the group. Upon looking into it ourselves, there were other overnight flights that could have booked. They are more interested in their profit than doing what's right for the customer. They had our full payment for months and could have found us another flight. This was a very expensive trip and I would never have voluntarily chosen to fly this way.

Photo of Tracy J.

Very disappointed with this agency. The trip rep. (Randy) came across as totally uncaring. They have our trip scheduled with a 7 hour layover state side. They have us arriving extremely late (we won't get to bed until after midnight) and leaving the hotel the next morning at 8:00 am. Randy did not care one bit. He said it's totally out of their hands; then why would anyone use them for travel. Very bad customer service!!!!

Photo of Deb O.

If I could leave no stars I would do that. I was so disappointed with this company. We were scheduled for a trip to Israel in January but the trip was cancelled because of the current conflict. The cancellation was done in November, after the full payment was due, but the company kept $300 per person from our payment. Of course the trip insurance the company recommended did not cover the cancellation cost so we are out that cost as well. they requested that we just change our reservation to January 2025. That seemed foolish - Allow them the use of nearly $11000 for 14 months? There were too many uncertainties to do that. Would the trip insurance be good at that time? Also, we were told by our tour leader that we would only be charged $250 each but the company stated $300 each. I contacted the company and received no satisfaction. Three friends had trips cancelled with other companies. All received full refunds including insurance and two couples received credit for future trips. This company has very poor service.

Photo of Steve P.

Great until there is a problem. 10 of us stranded in Israel. No help no communication.

Photo of J C.

Be VERY CAREFUL when dealing with this company. They are not refunding my family's deposit. Customer service is horrible. They told me directly they do what is best for their own company not for their customers. I had to open a dispute with my credit card company to get this company to respond. There is a reason why they only take checks for payment beyond the deposit, it is so you have no ability to dispute a charge when you pay via check. Buyer beware. I would not recommend this group at all.

Photo of Cindy W.

Rick and his team at Imagine Tours is second to none. Their expert knowledge and relationships in the industry are stronger than most others. The timeliness of responses and professionalism is outstanding. I have hosted 5 or more International groups with them and am extremely impressed.

Florida beaches overview

Best beaches to visit in florida, the best beaches in florida state parks, other good florida beach options, florida beaches recapped.

With sand, sun and sea stretching an impressive 825 miles across the state, Florida is the clear choice for visitors who want to enjoy some time at the beach. In fact, about a third of all travelers will head to at least one of the state’s beaches while visiting.

Beaches can be found along the state's Panhandle in the north, the Gulf of Mexico in the west and the Atlantic Ocean on its east coast. And don’t forget the dozens of islands that make up the Florida Keys along the state’s southern end.

While it may be impossible to definitively tell you what the best beach in Florida is, here are several contenders for the top spot.

Depending on where you go in Florida, you could end up swimming in one of two bodies of water. The beaches in the Panhandle and down the west side of the state border the Gulf of Mexico, while those on the eastern side of the state sit on the Atlantic Ocean.

What’s the difference? If you’re an early riser and want to watch the sun rise over the water, choose a beach on the Atlantic side, where you’ll find large waves and golden-brown sand. If you prefer catching a vibrant sunset instead, head to the Gulf, where the sand is often whiter and waves are smaller.

imagine travel florida

It’s warm enough to swim everywhere in Florida between April and October. The further south you go, the warmer the water is in the winter.

During the summer, the Gulf is warmer than the Atlantic. Its waters can reach 90 degrees Fahrenheit or warmer — sometimes the water is even warmer than the air. Meanwhile, the waters of the Atlantic usually remain in the 80s. For some perspective, most people will be comfortable swimming when the water is about 75-80 degrees.

Many Florida beaches have areas where pets can run off-leash, but make sure to check the specific regulations of the beach you’re visiting before you bring your pet.

Some beaches have lifeguards on duty as well as amenities like bathrooms and snack shacks, while others are more rustic without much in the way of services.

1. South Beach

With its Art Deco architecture, hip restaurants and bars, and lots of nightlife, Miami’s two-mile long South Beach is the place to see and be seen. Visitors and locals alike also come here to enjoy Lummus Park, a beachside spot featuring playgrounds, walking trails, a fitness area and plenty of popular events.

2. Hollywood Beach

Hollywood Beach, a family-friendly spot just south of Fort Lauderdale, has clean beaches and a pedestrian promenade, known as the Broadwalk, that features restaurants, shopping and hotels.

If the kids tire of sandcastles and waves, they can visit Charnow Park with its playgrounds and interactive fountain. It’s a good mix of old-Florida charm and modern amenities.

3. Daytona Beach

Farther north on the Atlantic coast, Daytona Beach comes with hard-packed sand and a gentle slope leading to the water — ideal for learning to surf. Here, you'll find 23 miles of coastline along with plenty of hotels, shops and restaurants.

It’s also one of the few places you can actually drive on the beach — very slowly and tide permitting — for $20 a day per vehicle.

4. Panama City Beach

Up in the Panhandle is Panama City Beach, known for its 27 miles of emerald green waters and sugar sand. Those who fish or dive love the area because of the many artificial reefs just offshore. Plus, the water is some of the clearest in the state.

Many of the beaches face west, meaning the sun sets directly over the water, making for spectacular views.

The Destin and Fort Walton Beach areas are called the Emerald Coast for a reason: The water off the 24-mile stretch of beach is often a vibrant green. Beyond the usual beach attractions of wharfs and piers, Crab Island is a big draw. Not actually an island but a raised sandbar, it’s a place where boaters can hang out, enjoy camaraderie and take advantage of a floating bar in the middle of it all.

6. Clearwater Beach

Farther south along the Gulf coast, near Tampa Bay, is Clearwater Beach. Over the years, it’s been named by many as the top beach in the country. The beach sits on a barrier island and touts 35 miles of sand along with hotels, restaurants and activities including an aquarium and alligator sanctuary.

Visitors can also visit Pier 60, a 1,080-foot fishing pier that hosts a nightly sunset festival.

Many of Florida’s beaches are located in state parks. They cover 100 miles of coastline across the state, but are usually more undeveloped. Some are home to both nesting sea turtles and shorebirds. The state parks also participate in sand dune and reef conservation efforts to protect the areas from storms, filter out pollutants and serve as fish nurseries.

7. Dr. Julian G. Bruce St. George Island State Park

Located on a barrier island in the Panhandle just south of Tallahassee, St. George Island State Park is a great spot for laid-back beach goers and nature lovers.

It was named the top beach in the country in 2023 by coastal expert Stephen Leatherman ("Dr. Beach"), who releases a well-known annual U.S. beach ranking . The state park’s beach won accolades due to its nine miles of undeveloped beaches, natural beauty and clear water.

8. Fort Zachary Taylor Historic State Park

Fort Zachary Taylor Historic State Park is on the southern end of Key West, where the Atlantic Ocean and Gulf of Mexico meet. In addition to swimming, snorkeling and fishing, visitors can tour Fort Taylor, a national historic monument that played roles in both the Civil and Spanish-American wars.

9. Honeymoon Island and Caladesi Island State Parks

Located near Dunedin just north of St. Petersburg, both Honeymoon Island State Park and Caladesi Island State Park consistently top the list of Florida’s best beaches.

While Caladesi Island is only accessible by boat, nearby Honeymoon Island’s four miles of beach can be reached by car. It’s also where you can catch the ferry to Caladesi Island.

In case you still haven’t found the perfect destination for your dream beach vacation, here are a handful of other beaches around the state that may hit the spot.

10. Siesta Key

Located on the Gulf coast about halfway down the state is Siesta Key. The eight-mile island is connected by bridge to Sarasota and has plenty of shopping, dining and sports options. It's loved by visitors because of its clear and calm water, powdery white sand and outdoor recreation opportunities like parasailing and volleyball.

11. Space Coast beaches

The 72 miles of shoreline along the Atlantic Ocean near Cape Canaveral is called the Space Coast. As some of the closest beaches to Orlando, they’re a great choice for travelers wanting to combine a beach trip with some of Florida’s famous theme parks .

The most popular beach in the area is Cocoa Beach. Home to Ron Jon Surf Shop, the world’s largest surfing store, it’s a great place to ride the waves and meet fellow surfers. If surfing isn’t your thing, you can try other activities like kayaking, deep sea fishing and kiteboarding.

And visitors of all ages can enjoy a visit to the nearby Kennedy Space Center. If you time your visit to the Space Coast right, you might even be treated to a rocket launch.

» Learn more: How to travel to Orlando on points and miles

12. Fort Myers beaches

Before Hurricane Ian slammed into Fort Myers Beach and nearby Sanibel and Captiva Islands in September 2022, the area consistently found itself at the top of many lists of Florida’s best beaches.

As businesses continue to rebuild, there’s still plenty of sand and sun for those willing to come. Shell collectors should head to Sanibel or Captiva Islands, where these ocean treasures can be had in spades thanks to the region’s ocean currents and coastline orientation.

13. Jacksonville beaches

Some of the northernmost beaches on Florida’s Atlantic coast are in the Jacksonville area and include St. Augustine and Ponte Vedra. Dubbed the Historic Coast, there are 42 miles of beachfront to explore, including at Fort Matanzas National Monument, which was built in 1742 by the Spanish military to defend the area.

Driving on the sand is allowed in designated areas along St. Augustine Beach for a fee. And if you need a break from the water, Ponte Vedra Beach offers many world-renowned golf courses.

» Learn more: How to travel to Jacksonville on points and miles

If you’re in the mood for a beach vacation, heading to Florida is a great option. With hundreds of miles of coastline spanning two bodies of water, it would take years — if not a lifetime — to explore it all.

Whether you want to combine your beach trip with a visit to Walt Disney World and the Kennedy Space Center, or you prefer the low-key vibes of a state park, Florida has you covered.

The 2024 travel season kicks off with Spring Break: Where Tennesseans are heading

imagine travel florida

Gloomy winter weather is on the way out and March 19, the first day of spring, is quickly approaching.

That means longer, sunnier days. It also means crowds of adventurers descending on top tourism destinations — and Tennesseans are eager to travel in 2024.

According to a new AAA travel survey, 85% of state residents will venture out of the state this year and 45% of Tennesseans are likely to travel more than last year. Nearly one in every three Tennesseans has vacation plans over Spring Break, the survey found.

The busiest travel period in 2024? March through July.

"For the Tennesseans planning a Spring Break trip, the top trips planned are to beaches, major cities, theme parks, and national/state parks," said AAA spokesperson Megan Cooper. "Florida is always a popular trip for Tennesseans and it checks a lot of boxes for those looking for the beach, Disney World, or those that are planning on departing on a cruise from one of the Florida ports."

The surge in travel will be felt on the roads and at Nashville International Airport, travel officials said.

Busiest travel days in March

Nashville International officials are preparing for higher-than-normal traffic in the airport and on nearby roads throughout the month.

The busiest days for airline passengers at BNA will be March 8, March 10, March 17 and March 31, according to Nashville International Airport.

"While record-breaking numbers aren’t anticipated, BNA anticipates an uptick in passenger traffic throughout March," said airport spokesperson Erin Thomas.

Airport preparations include increasing staff in parking garages and valet lots, expanding availability in Economy Lot C and coordinating with the Department of Public Safety to manage traffic flow on the busiest days. BNA also offers free parking for up to 30 minutes at terminal garages.

The Transportation Security Administration is adding 25 screening agents to manage the volume of passengers.

Nashville airport officials encourage drivers picking up travelers to use the cell-phone waiting lot at 1415 Murfreesboro Pike instead of clogging roads by circling the terminal.

Busier airlines also means more potential for delays and cancelations, so travelers are encouraged to arrive early and track their flight statuses via airlines and sites like FlightAware.com.

Where is everyone going for Spring Break?

Many Nashville-area travelers will spend their Spring Break in Florida — which, led by Orlando, has numerous Spring Break meccas that fill up in the second week of March.

"Orlando is the top choice for Spring Break travelers, while Fort Lauderdale and Miami are the two most popular domestic cruise ports," said Paula Twidale, senior vice president of AAA Travel.

"Many travelers are looking for warm weather, pools and beaches, and outdoor adventures this time of year, and cruise vacations check all those boxes."

Gulf Coast cities of Destin, Panama City Beach and Clearwater are popular go-to beach trips.

In addition, Americans are flocking to cruise ships this year. Cruise bookings surged 28% for March and April, compared to last year, with a 60% increase in South Florida departures, according to AAA Travel.

Cruising is up and so is global travel. Thirty percent more Americans are flying internationally this year, AAA found.

"The travel season is already off to a hot start in 2024," said AAA Vice President of Travel Debbie Haas. "More AAA members are also booking tours for their international Spring Break vacations."

A Florida man kept having migraines. Doctors then discovered tapeworm eggs in his brain.

The man admitted to making a habit of regularly consuming undercooked bacon, which experts believe is what made him particularly vulnerable to the infestation, according to a recent study..

imagine travel florida

A Florida man suffering from persistent migraines was in for what was likely a nasty shock when he sought medical treatment and learned what was causing the pain.

Festering tapeworm eggs were discovered to have taken up residence in his head after physicians conducted a CT scan to obtain a detailed image of the 52-year-old man's brain. And lots of them.

But the parasitic infection didn't happen by accident. The man admitted to making a habit of regularly consuming undercooked bacon, which experts believe is what made him particularly vulnerable to the infestation, according to a report published in the  American Journal of Case Reports .

The man was treated with antiparasitic and anti-inflammatory medications before he was instructed to follow up with an infectious diseases clinic, the report stated. While he appears to be on the road to recovery, the researchers warned that the strange condition, known medically as neurocysticercosis, is highly rare in the U.S. and should put physicians on guard for future cases.

“It is historically very unusual to encounter infected pork in the United States," researchers wrote. "Our case may have public health implications."

Pork plant closing: Tyson Foods closing Iowa pork plant as company moves forward with series of 2024 closures

Neurocysticercosis 'thought to be nonexistent' in U.S.

If a person unwittingly ingests the microscopic eggs of pork tapeworms (known medically as Taenia solium ,) they are putting themselves at risk of developing either cysticercosis or the much more dangerous neurocysticercosis.

People most often contract the infection by swallowing tapeworm eggs spread through food, water or – yes – coming into contact with surfaces contaminated by a person's infected feces, according to the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention . (Wash your hands, people!)

Once in a person's system, the larvae of the parasite can get into tissues such as a person's muscles and brain, forming cysts and potentially causing seizures. When they embed within the nervous system, the condition is called neurocysticercosis.

While preventable and treatable, the disease still hospitalizes about 1,000 Americans a year and can be fatal. It's also expensive: the average charge of hospitalization due to neurocysticercosis was $37,600, the CDC noted.

The man in the recent case had a history of migraines but sought medical treatment after they become more severe and longer-lasting during a four-month period.

Imaging techniques, including both a CT scan and an MRI, revealed multiple cysts within his brain that were confirmed to be the larvae of tapeworms, leading to the neurocysticercosis diagnosis, according to the researchers.

The recent study noted that “it is very rare for patients to contract neurocysticercosis outside of classic exposures or travel, and such cases in the United States were thought to be nonexistent."

The condition is most common in the rural areas of developing countries, especially ones where pigs are a primary source of food and sanitary conditions are poor, the CDC states . However, cysticercosis may become more common in the U.S. as international travel becomes more common, according to the National Library of Medicine .

How undercooked bacon increased the man's risk tapeworm infection

The larvae of  Taenia solium is a tapeworm that most commonly infects pigs, but humans who inadvertently ingest undercooked pork can also be infected.

Though the man in this case "denied eating raw or street food," the report states that he "admitted to a habit of eating lightly cooked, non-crispy bacon for most of his life."

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration recommends cooking pork to  at least 145 degrees Fahrenheit . That may be difficult to determine in such a thin meat, but those who enjoy the breakfast staple should be in the clear if they cook it until it's crisp, according to the  U.S. Department of Agriculture .

Though the man's preference for soft bacon wasn’t the sole cause of the ailment, the researchers determined that he likely consumed bacon that had gone bad. Since it was undercooked, it made him especially susceptible to the infection.

The physicians involved in the man's case further speculated that he did not properly wash his hands after using the bathroom.

While little has historically been done to monitor this particular strain of infection in the United States, the CDC said it is ramping up efforts to work with state and local health departments across the country to identify and treat patients.

"Finding and treating people with tapeworm infections will reduce a preventable cause of seizures, help more people live healthy, productive lives, and lead to lower economic burden on health care," the agency stated.

I'm an NYU student who commutes from New York to Florida every weekend for my internship. I've spent nearly $10,000 on travel.

  • I'm an NYU student who landed a dream internship in Florida.
  • Every weekend, I super commute from New York to Florida to work my internship all weekend.
  • I'm making a lot of money but I'm spending nearly $10,000 on travel during my super commute.

Insider Today

In high school, I ran my own travel agency. From that experience, I developed an appreciation for customer service and luxury hotel brands. When I enrolled at New York University last year, I decided to pursue an internship in the hospitality industry as a freshman.

However, given the relative scarcity of internships at luxury hotel companies in New York City, I broadened my search to opportunities nationwide. I got three interviews in three cities: Scottsdale, Arizona ; Las Vegas; and Naples, Florida — all during midterm season.

Undertaking these interviews was a massive gamble, requiring me to invest over $1,500 in plane tickets and fly to and from each city on the same day. But, I knew I had to bet on myself.

I received two offers: one from The Ritz-Carlton, Naples, and another from a corporate office in Las Vegas for a different hotel chain. Having admired The Ritz-Carlton my entire life, choosing the former option was a pretty easy decision.

However, navigating the logistical challenges of super commuting —coordinating flights, securing accommodations, and managing my full-time studies — has been anything but easy.

My schedule has been the most difficult part

I am incredibly fortunate to have a manager who has accommodated my unique schedule, allowing me to work exclusively on weekends. This arrangement makes my super-commute between New York and Florida feasible — albeit invariably tight.

My classes run from Monday through Friday — starting at 11 a.m. on Monday and ending at 12:15 p.m. on Friday. After class, I head to the airport, boarding either the subway or a train. Travel time often doubles as study time — whether in-flight or waiting at the gate . I typically take an Uber or a shuttle to my hotel after landing.

Related stories

Generally, the total travel time from my dorm to my hotel ranges from five to eight hours, door-to-door, depending on the airport and hotel locations. However, flight delays, such as one that resulted in my arriving at 1 a.m., can extend this timeline significantly.

Thankfully, the Ritz-Carlton provides highly competitive compensation — particularly due to the extensive hours required.

After finishing on Sunday, I head straight from the property to the airport to catch my 9 p.m. flight, arriving in New York around midnight. I then take a train or subway back to NYU, ultimately returning to my dorm between 2 and 3 a.m. on Monday.

This may not be feasible for everyone

I will acknowledge that achieving this particular feat was largely made possible by a unique set of circumstances. First, residing in New York City offers access to almost unlimited flights , ensuring flexibility in timing and competitive pricing. I have five airports within a train ride's distance to choose from.

On the accommodations front, being a Marriott associate has granted me significant discounts at Marriott hotels, keeping me profitable even amid Naples' sky-high winter prices. This benefit — combined with a supportive manager who has been very accommodating of my schedule — offers a level of flexibility that would have been unattainable under any other circumstances.

Plus, money certainly is certainly an issue. I use almost all of my pay to afford this travel. In all, I've spent just under $10,000 on hotels, flights, and cars. That means I will not have much money left over when this internship is over.

Even though it's difficult, I don't regret it

The transformative experiences and incredible lessons I'm learning at The Ritz-Carlton are preparing me for the future, instilling in me the values of diligence, adaptability, and a deep focus on customer satisfaction.

Despite the challenges of traveling thousands of miles monthly, the rewards have been immeasurable. Plus, the connections I have made, both within the company and in the broader community — many of whom come from backgrounds different from mine — have significantly broadened my perspective. I have encountered dozens of fascinating individuals simply by sitting next to them on a flight.

I'm often asked how I juggle my role at The Ritz-Carlton, coursework, and various other projects without feeling overwhelmed. My answer is simple: I don't see all of this as work but as the pursuit of my passions. Each task I embark on is driven by sincere interest and ambition, making every day an opportunity for discovery, learning, and personal growth.

Sharks, lightning, rough surf: The most dangerous beaches in Florida, by the numbers

imagine travel florida

Heading to the beach? Have a great time! Just watch for sharks. And lightning. And rip currents. And hurricanes.

In 2023, seven of the 10 most dangerous beaches in the U.S., according to the online travel site  Travel Lens , were in Florida based on shark bites, surf fatalities, hurricane frequency and more.

Keep in mind, part of that is surely because 825 miles of our 1,350 miles of coast are sandy beaches , some of the most beautiful in the country. Only Alaska has more coastline and we're a lot warmer. Florida has the third-largest population in the U.S. and every year millions of people visit just to head to the beach (or to see Disney World, but many of them hit the beach, too). More people means better odds of someone getting hurt.

But just so you're aware of the potential threats, these may be the most dangerous beaches in Florida.

What is the most dangerous beach in Florida for shark bites?

New Smyrna Beach, the "shark bite capital of the world," hands down, is the most dangerous beach in Florida for shark bites.

Florida had 16 reported unprovoked shark bites in 2023 , according to a study released by the Florida Program for Shark Research . That's the most of any state and twice that of the next closest one (Hawaii, with 8). Half of those 16 bites were in Volusia County, and five were in New Smyrna Beach just south of Daytona Beach.

Volusia County in total has reported 351 unprovoked shark bites since 1882, according to the program's International Shark Attack File , twice the next closest county of Brevard with 158.

Why? Lots of people, lots of swimmers, lots of fishing (which means lots of bait fish), lots of surfers. The Ponce Inlet/New Smyrna Beach area is popular with surfers and that churns up the water and lowers visibility.

The locals are fully aware of this, of course. You can buy  Shark Bite Capital T-shirts , for a while there was a  Shark Park attraction  (now closed), and in 2022  decorative shark statues designed by local artists and high school students  were installed around town.

How to avoid danger or shark attacks in Florida:

  • Swim in a group, sharks are more likely to attack a single person.
  • Swim only near lifeguards.
  • Don't go in at dawn or dusk, when sharks are most active.
  • Avoid shiny jewelry, which can resemble fish scales.
  • Don't go in the water if you're bleeding.
  • Be careful around sandbars and near steep drop-offs, these are favorite hangouts for sharks.
  • Use extra caution when waters are murky.
  • Avoid excess splashing, which can draw a shark's attention.
  • Don't swim where fishermen are fishing or a lot of baitfish are swimming around.
  • Get out of the water if sharks are sighted.

What is the most dangerous beach in Florida for lightning strikes?

Florida gets a lot of lightning, more than anywhere else in the country. A 10-year study found that on average, the Sunshine State gets 3,500 cloud-to-ground lightning flashes per day and 1.2 million per year. And sometimes it hits people. Sometimes it kills them .

USA TODAY reported in 2023 that Florida also lead the U.S. in deaths by lightning strikes with 85 since 2006. From 1959 to 2017, Florida saw 498 fatal lightning strikes , more than twice as many as the next state (Texas, with 226).

Since 2000, 17 people in Panama City Beach have been killed by lightning.

Studies have found that over 70% of the lightning deaths happened in June, July and August, with slightly more happening on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays (likely due to more people outdoors, on beaches and golf courses and in parks).

(It's not a beach, but the single most lightning-dense area in the United States is an unincorporated community in Florida just west of Disney World called Four Corners. A study from environmental technology company  Vaisala found that in 2022, Four Corners saw 474 lightning events per square kilometer, or 1,229 lightning events per square mile.)

How to avoid danger from thunder and lightning in Florida:

  • Go indoors or get in your vehicle when storms approach.
  • Avoid trees and open-sided shelters.
  • Avoid contact with running water.
  • Avoid contact with electrical systems such as computers or game systems.

What is the most dangerous beach in Florida for surfers?

According to TravelLens, the popular spring break destination Panama City Beach won that dubious title due to the 24 surf zone deaths that occurred between 2010 and 2023.

The second-most dangerous beach for surfers was Daytona Beach, which had 16 in the same period.

How to avoid danger:

  • Don't surf alone.
  • Use the right equipment.
  • Know the area and read forecasts.
  • Pay attention to everything.
  • Don't stand up too fast.
  • Avoid surfing before or during a hurricane or tropical storm, which Panama City Beach officials attributed to several of their incidents.

In 2023, Panama City Beach made several most-dangerous-beach lists for another reason.

What Florida beach had the most drownings?

From June 15-24, 2023, seven people died after swimming in the Gulf of Mexico off the coast of Panama City Beach (one was outside the city limits on an unincorporated Bay County beach). That's the most drownings in one location in the U.S. that year, according to a National Weather Service database.

That's not the fault of the beach, though. Officials say six of them happened under double red flags, which means the ocean was closed to the public due to dangerous rip currents and the swimmers, all tourists, apparently went in anyway. Only surfers tethered to a surfboard are allowed to enter the Gulf during double red flags.

The other drowning was a tourist who went swimming under a single red flag, which designates high surf and strong currents.

"Any and every loss of life is a tragedy," the city said in a release. "The city considers these drownings heart-wrenching, unnecessary and preventable.”

Rip currents are river-like underwater currents in the surf zone (from the beach to past the breaking waves) that are moving away from the beach. Powerful rip currents can pull people out into the ocean or just wear them out as they try to swim to shore.

  • Check out the surf zone forecast before you go.
  • Know how to swim and swim near a lifeguard.
  • Bring flotation devices or a United States Coast Guard-approved life jacket.
  • Swim near friends.
  • Know the beach's address should you need to call for help.
  • Know the location of life stations on the beach equipped with life rings that could be thrown to someone in trouble.
  • Pay attention to any hazard flags posted at the beach or at lifeguard stations and chairs.
