Maui is a tropical paradise and one of the most sought-after ports of call for cruise passengers in Hawaii. To make the most of your limited time on the island, we recommend booking a shore excursion to experience its natural beauty with your own eyes.

If you’re looking at cruise options, you’ll find different companies that leave from the West Coast. However, the Pride of America by Norwegian Cruise Line (no affiliation) offers a 7-day Hawaiian Island trip that leaves from Honolulu and stops on Maui, Kauai , and the Big Island . This is one of the most popular Hawaii cruise options, as you’ll get to experience the best of the Hawaiian islands in just one week.

Pride of America cruises year-round, but there are several other cruise line options and even a best time to cruise Hawaii .

Once you’ve booked your cruise, you can then choose different Maui shore excursions to keep you occupied on land. We know it can be confusing to organize an entire itinerary for four islands on a cruise, so we did it for you: grab our Cruising Hawaii Guide to help with the planning process.

Can’t Miss Maui Shore Excursions

Booking a Maui shore excursion is a great way to experience the natural beauty and culture of the island. But with only a limited time on land, it’s important for passengers to make the most of the time they have available.

If this is your first time on Maui, we highly recommend booking one of the following tours. Not only are they popular experiences for travelers, but they also encapsulate the very essence of Maui itself.

If this is your first time on Maui, we highly recommend booking one of the following tours. Not only are they popular experiences for travelers, but they also encapsulate the very essence of Maui itself. Click the links below to learn more and book directly with the local tour operator!

The Road to Hana : Considered to be one of the most beautiful drives in Hawaii, the Road to Hana is a must if you’re visiting Maui. Regardless of whether you book a full tour or half tour, we recommend using an experienced driver (it’s better to soak in the views rather than constantly focusing on the winding road). There are a lot of ways to experience the Road to Hana, so find the right one for you below. Save 10% using the link above and promo code HVG10!

We also share our favorite half-day Road to Hana tour, backside (full circle tour), and Road to Hana Jeep tour here: 8 Best Road to Hana Tours .

Molokini Crater Snorkel: For those craving a dip in the ocean, a snorkel trip to the Molokini Crater will not disappoint. With underwater visibility of over 100 feet, you’ll be able to see an astounding array of wildlife in this marine conservation area.

Haleakala Sunrise: Although this tour starts very early (we’re talking 3 AM!), it’s an amazing experience all travelers should experience at least once. It’s a great option if your ship is docked for two days at the Kahului Harbor, as it’s easy to hop off the ship first thing in the morning. Save 10% using the link above and promo code HVG10!

If tours are sold out for the 10% off tour above, check out our other favorite Haleakala Sunrise Tours here .

Maui shore excursions - sup

Take a moment to familiarize yourself with the Hawaii cruise ports so you know what to expect at each stop. Some ports are central to a downtown area where you could spend all day ( Kailua Pier ) and others are far from anything you’ll want to do ( Kahului Harbor ).

Where to Book Maui Shore Excursions

When it comes to booking your Maui shore excursions, you can either book directly with the cruise ship or directly with a local tour operator. We prefer booking directly with local tour operators to support small, local businesses! But, there are pros and cons for both.

Booking Maui Shore Excursions with the Ship

Once you book your cruise, you’ll likely have the option to add different types of excursions to your itinerary.

Many people do this online beforehand, as some excursions can sell out if there is high demand. However, you’ll also have the option to book something with the ship once you board.

Arranging your Maui shore excursions with your cruise ship has the following advantages:

  • Guaranteed return: Cruise-organized excursions are structured around the ship’s docking schedule. Therefore, you can rest assured that you’ll make it back to the ship without worrying about missing your departure time.
  • Transportation: Another major benefit of booking with your cruise line is that transportation is usually included. There’s no need to hire a taxi or book private transportation services to and from the dock.
  • Convenient: It’s possible that the cost of the cruise-organized excursion is higher than if you were to arrange the activity on your own. However, you should take into account that transportation is almost always included, which can actually save you money in the long run.
  • Refunds: The weather on Maui can be fickle, and it’s not unheard of for cruises to cancel disembarkation due to unfavorable conditions. If this happens, you’ll get a refund from the cruise line, which is an extra layer of security.
  • Booking options: As mentioned earlier, you have the option to pick an excursion online in advance. But if you’d rather play things by ear, you can also book once you’re on the boat. Having this flexibility is great if you’re not sure of your cruise plans!

If you’re cruising Hawaii with mobility aids or need to know about accessibility on the islands, check out our Guide to Hawaii Handicap Accessible Trip Planning , and be ready to be met with plenty of aloha.

Booking Maui Shore Excursions with the Tour Operator

When deciding on tours and excursions, you’ll also have the option to bypass the middleman and book directly with the tour operator.

Here are the benefits to booking directly with local tour operators like we share below:

  • Support locals: When you book with a tour company on Maui, you’re supporting a local business and contributing to the growth of the community.
  • Cost: In the majority of cases, the price of the excursion will be much lower than if you were to book with the cruise ship. While the ship’s tours may include transportation, you’ll also be paying to have convenience and peace of mind.
  • Availability: Excursions offered by the cruise line are limited, which means they tend to sell out fast. Going with a local company means more flexibility, especially if you’re planning things as you go. We’ll share a few of our favorite local excursions below.
  • Small groups: Tours with lots of people can ruin the experience, but local tour operators usually have smaller group sizes (up to 12 people). It’s also possible to book a private tour if you want a more intimate setting.
  • Cancellation policy: Many excursions have a generous cancellation policy in case your plans change. This can be anywhere from 24 to 72 hours, depending on the group size and specific company. Make sure you check the refund and cancellation terms before booking your tour.

One important thing to keep in mind is that local-operated tours do not guarantee a set return time to the ship. This can be a bit nerve-wracking if things are delayed, or you get held up on land. If this happens, make sure you call the ship if you think you’ll be running late.

But if you want to avoid the stress altogether, we suggest booking with the cruise ship or with one of the trusted tour operators below. We’ve gone on excursions with many of them, while others have been chosen by members of our newsletter community. Therefore, we can attest that they work hard to get you back to the ship on time!

The Best Maui Shore Excursions

Now that you know the benefits of exploring the land while docked, let’s dive into our picks for the best Maui shore excursions. Each of these tour operators has been handpicked and tested by us (or one of our newsletter members), so you can ensure that it’s going to be a memorable experience!

Maui Shore Excursions: Kahului Harbor

As we stated earlier, Norwegian Cruise Line’s Pride of America cruise makes a two-day stopover at Kahului Harbor. Not only will you have a full day for excursions, but you’ll also have the chance to book an early morning tour (like Road to Hana and Haleakala Sunrise) on the second day.

Road to Hana

The Road to Hana is a quintessential Maui experience for those interested in seeing the jaw-dropping landscapes of the island. As you navigate the hairpin turns of Hana Highway, you’ll see lush rainforests, cascading waterfalls, and panoramic coastal views. Our Complete Road to Hana Guide explains in more detail what you can expect to see during your drive.

Tours vary depending on group size, vehicle (ex: Jeeps, shuttle buses, etc.), and even the route (here are 5 popular routes for the Road to Hana ). However, excursions are very popular, not just with cruise passengers but also with all types of travelers. Therefore, we recommend booking your tour early with one of the following operators if you’re set on making this unforgettable journey.

Valley Isle Excursions : As one of the most popular Road to Hana tours for cruisers, this full-day tour takes you to the most beautiful spots on East Maui in small groups (12 people max). Breakfast, lunch, and admissions fees to Waianapanapa State Park are also included. Make sure to use code HVG10 at checkout to save 10%.

The road to hana is one of the great Maui shore excursions

Small Group, Full Circle Route : This tour caps at 6 to 8 guests, so it’s ideal for those wanting a more intimate experience exploring the Road to Hana. They pick up at Kahului Harbor at 7 AM and provide breakfast, lunch, and snacks.

Backside Full Circle Route : Another full-day tour option (7 AM start) that takes you in a 9 to 14-person passenger van to all the Road to Hana highlights. Lunch is also included. For pickup at the Kahului Harbor, select the Maui Seaside Hotel in the drop-down list and specify harbor pickup in the notes.

The Road to Hana Maui shore excursions

Private Luxury : See Hana in style with this full-day trip in a luxury Cadillac. Suitable for up to 6 guests, this tour includes breakfast, and lunch, as well as harbor pickup and dropoff.

If you prefer to book your excursion with Norwegian, they usually have good deals leaving from Kahului Harbor.

Haleakala Sunrise

Start the day bright and early and witness one of the most awe-inspiring sunrises you’ll ever see! With your tour, you’ll ascend up to the summit of the Haleakala Volcano, which stands over 10,000 feet above sea level.

Book your trip with Valley Isle Excursions and save 10% of your excursion when you use HVG10 during checkout. You can also get more information on this tour (along with three other tour options), on our Haleakala Sunrise Tour Guide .

Molokini Crater Snorkel

If you’ve ever wanted to snorkel in the crater of a submerged volcano, this is your chance! Molokini is a crescent-shaped islet off the coast of Maui. It’s one of the best places for snorkeling as the water is translucently clear, giving you the chance to see a wide array of marine life.`

One of our top picks is this Molokini Crater Snorkel Tour with Redline Rafting. Transportation is not included (you’ll have to make your own way to the Kihei Boat Ramp), but you can choose between a 2-hour tour (7 AM or 9:30 AM start time) or a 5-hour tour (7 AM start time).

For those traveling on the Norwegian Pride of American ship, you’ll also be able to book a Molokini snorkel tour which includes transportation.

Maui Gold Pineapple Tour

As one of the only tour pineapple farms in the country, Maui Gold Pineapples is an awesome day trip for cruisers. The plantation is located in Upcountry Maui, which is a 20-minute drive from the Kahului Harbor (you’ll need to organize your own transportation if you want to visit).

Tours of the plantation are conducted throughout the day from Monday to Saturday. Not only will you learn about how pineapples are grown and harvested, but you’ll also get to take home your very own pineapple for free!

Horseback Riding on the Slopes of Haleakala

This horseback riding tour is a fun and unique way to see the stunning Maui landscape. Saddle up and traverse the slopes of the majestic Haleakala volcano with your small tour group (only 2 to 6 guests).

There are different types of horseback riding trips available, so you can choose an excursion that fits your interests and time schedule. But keep in mind that you’ll need to find your own transportation there (plan at least one hour each way).

Maui Shore Excursions: Lahaina Tender

On August 8 th , 2023, Lahaina Harbor suffered extensive damage during a wildfire . This will have devastating consequences on the town for years to come, especially considering the multi-million dollar cruise dock was recently completed. As a result, cruise ships will not be going to the Lahaina Tender for the foreseeable future.

However, Kahului Harbor remains operational and will continue to take in ships.

Lahaina Harbor, Maui shore excursions

Maui Shore Excursions FAQs

Where do maui cruise ships dock for shore excursions.

Unfortunately, the devastating fires that took place on August 8 th , 2023, have changed the way that cruise ships operate around Maui. Previously, ships could dock at one of two ports – the Kahului Harbor and the Lahaina Harbor. As a result of the damage, Lahaina Harbor is no longer operational.

Therefore, the only dock that is open to Maui cruise ships is Kahului Harbor . This cargo facility is located on the northern part of the island. Unless you book a tour or excursions, don’t expect to see much here by just walking around. There is a Whole Foods Market and a small shopping center, although it’s not a scenic walk since the area is industrial.

Can I get picked up by a taxi, Uber, or Lyft from the dock for my Maui cruise excursion?

If you book an excursion with a local tour operator that does not include transportation, then you’ll have several options to get to your meeting point. Ubers and Lyfts are available on Maui, so you’ll be able to reserve once you dock. You can also hail a taxi or schedule one in advance to pick you up.

It’s also possible to book a rental car from Kahului Harbor, as the airport is just a short ride away. There are also satellite offices for a few companies located closer to port.

We have extensive information on how to find the best-priced rental cars, pre-booked taxis, and other transportation options in our Cruising Hawaii Guide .

Maui shore excursions

Do tour operators offer pickup at the dock?

There are many local tour operators on Maui that offer pickup and drop-off at the dock for cruise passengers. When you go to reserve your tour online, you’ll usually see an option to select stating that you’re coming with a cruise ship. This way, you can provide your information to schedule a pickup from the dock.

If you don’t see this option available online, we suggest calling the tour company to arrange pickup.

For activities that do not provide transportation (like zip lining), you may be required to take a taxi or Uber to the destination or meetup point. Remember that you need to be back on board at a certain time, so book your taxi or rideshare in advance to guarantee you don’t miss your departure!

What should I know about booking tours in Hawaii?

There are a few things to keep in mind when booking excursions on your Hawaiian cruise.

  • We recommend tipping your tour guide $10 to $20 per person in your party (tips are accepted in cash or via Venmo). This is pretty standard for most guided tours, like snorkel trips or half-day excursions. However, give whatever you feel comfortable with.
  • It’s also important to note that most activities are weather-dependent. If there are rough seas or bad weather, your tour may be canceled. If you’re unsure, call your tour operator to confirm the details.
  • And speaking of rough seas, seasickness can be a huge problem! If you’re someone who gets seasick easily, make sure you take anti-nausea or motion sickness medication before your tour.
  • Finally, remember to read through all the restrictions of your excursion. For example, most tours have a minimum age of 5, which can impact families traveling with small kids.

Whether you’re just off a cruise with Pride of America , Princess Cruises , Viking , Holland America —or any other vessel that selects Maui as one of its stops—do know that your Valley Isle break is bound to be a vacation highlight. But between kicking back on a beautiful beach to hiking through a remarkable rainforest, it can be difficult to choose how to spend your precious time on the island and which Maui shore excursions to choose.

With that in mind, here are the top 15 ways to relish Maui’s beauty —and why you should book ahead to hop on one of these Maui shore excursions:

The Top 15 Maui Shore Excursions

You’ve soared across the sea; now it’s time to take to the sky..

zipline

Experience a different plane of Maui—literally—with  Maui Zipline Company . Located at the Maui Tropical Plantation —a mere fifteen-minute drive from Kahului Harbor—this 1.5-2 hour tour propels adventurous spirits high into the air while impressive views spool below. With 5 side-by-side ziplines, from 300 to 900 feet in distance, Maui Zipline allows for exciting views of the prime island landscape and provides spectacular panoramas of the West Maui Mountains. This is the perfect Maui shore excursion for families and can accommodate children as young as five years old!

Looking to soak up as much of Maui’s warmth as possible?

keawakapu beach

Search no further than Keawakapu Beach . Situated at the end of South Kihei in Wailea , it features spellbinding views of the outlying islands and Maui’s own Puʻu Olaʻi . The north end of the beach offers a grassy expanse to drop anchor on land (a.k.a cooler, towel, and book), while the waves here are clear enough to, well, read underwater. Stop at one of the many snorkel shops for gear rentals; in between naps, slip into the sea to gaze at the island’s marine treasures. Back on the sand, keep an eye peeled for a whale’s tail: This is Humpback whale territory .

Experience a whole new side of the Valley Isle on a Maui Waterfall and Rainforest Hike .

hike in Maui, Hawaii

Several options are available for your schedule and strength. For those on a time budget, consider the Short Jungle Hike —a tranquil, 1-mile roundtrip hike to two glorious waterfalls and the freshwater pools they feed (which are ideal for cannonballs and splashing). Searching for something more moderate without as big of a time crunch? Try the Halfway To Hana Tour —which requires six to seven hours—takes visitors to a thriving rainforest that boasts waterfalls, freshwater pools, volcanic shelves, and striking island flora. Intrepid travelers (and cruise passengers with more time) can dive deep into Maui’s splendor with a full-day Hana hike —complete with a trek into a bamboo forest . Gear up the camera: The views you’ll encounter are worth saving for posterity.

Eager for some action on the sand?

kaanapali beach

Kaʻanapali is where to find it. The drive alone is gorgeous and astonishing, with the Pacific glimmering on one side and the West Maui Mountains shimmering with fertility on the other. Park at the west end of Kaʻanapali Beach —a stretch of blissful sand lined with glossy resorts and featuring a village with eats and treats. The lava outcropping at Black Rock offers swimmers the chance to plunge into an ocean teeming with iridescent fish, while those who just want to chill will have ample space to soak up the rays. No matter your energy level, paddle out: Hawaiian Green Sea Turtles are known to grace these parts.  Remember that cliff divers often jump off Black Rock, which can be dangerous for swimmers and snorkelers.

There’s no better way to feel one with nature than astride a horse—especially when said horse takes you into some of the most unspoiled regions of the island.

maui ocean horses

Circle M Ranch —a family-owned and operated working ranch that was established in 1886—is located on the edge of Wailuku , where sweeping ocean vistas compete with untouched expanses of the rainforest. Their Morning Ride—ideal for cruise passengers—takes riders from the corral down to the epic coastline; their Afternoon Ride skirts the edge of a hypnotizing valley while the ocean beckons in the foreground.

Explore Maui’s bounty in a different way entirely with these Maui restaurants.

Tacos Maui

From 5-star experiences to food truck delights, here are some restaurants we recommend on Maui to help narrow your search.

Central Maui Restaurants – Bistro Casanova, Tin Roof, Marcoʻs Grill & Deli, Cafe OʻLei At The Mill House, The Food Trucks across from Costco

South Maui Restaurants –  Nalu’s South Shore Grill, Lineage, Sansei, Monkeypod Kitchen, Coconut’s Fish Cafe

West Maui Restaurants – Fleetwood’s on Front St., Macadangdang, Star Noodle, Mala Ocean Tavern, Leoda’s Kitchen and Pies

North Shore & Upcountry – Mama’s Fish House, Hali’imaile General Store, Restaurant Marlow, Flatbread Company, Paia Fish Market

Rest assured if time isn’t on your side: You can ogle the island’s most magnificent spots from the cabin of a luxurious chopper.

Maui helicopter tour

Maui Helicopter Tours gives valiant travelers a chance to choose which parts of the island they’re most eager to see, whether it’s soaring across the world’s largest dormant volcano ( Haleakala ) or hovering above the rainforests of Hana . Have extra time to spare? Consider a trip that does double duty and takes you to the lush, mysterious island of Molokai. This is definitely one of our favorite Maui shore excursions.

Breathe new life into your sea legs by strapping on those golf shoes and heading out for a round or two on one of the island’s best courses.

Maui golf course

Located a short drive away from Kahului Harbor, The King Kamehameha and Kahili Golf Clubs boasts dazzling views of Maui’s coastline and volcanic peaks, while its clubhouse—founded on a design for the one and only Marilyn Monroe —is the perfect place to imbibe in a cocktail and sort through those cruise photos. These are the two courses closest to the harbor that should be considered. Kapalua Plantation & Bay Courses, Kaanapali Royal & Kai Courses, and Wailea Blue, Emerald, and Gold are all great courses but are further away from Kahului Harbor. Earthly, peaceful, and culturally rich, this is one of the choicest ways to revitalize.

Get your heart rate pumping on an uncommon kind of ship: A zodiac boat seemingly built for thrills.

snorkeling Makena

Red Line Rafting allows visitors to duck the crowds by offering private group tours of Maui’s snorkeling mecca, Molokini . Customized rafts—and a friendly crew—speed swimmers across the sea so that you and your fam can spend more time in the ocean. With a knowledgeable staff educated in Hawaiian geology, history, culture, and marine life (and who serve lunch to boot), Red Line Rafting is the epitome of fun in the sun. Seats are limited.

Your hips that is: The Grand Wailea—an opulent resort on Maui’s south shore—features lovely grounds (including a church with stained glass windows and pools that seem to go on for miles) and one of the finest luaus on the island.

fire dancing at the Grand Wailea

ʻAhaʻaina Wailea , also known as the Grand Wailea Luau, comprises Hawaiian culture, history, and cuisine into an entertaining evening full of fiery entertainment. An abundance of traditional luau food is provided—including Kalua pig, haupia, and poi —as well as pre-show entertainment and a full imu ceremony . Moreover, you can learn how to hula with the best of ‘em.  There are also many other luaus on Maui to choose from. Whatever you choose, a luau is one of the best Maui shore excursions!

Maui is a sight to behold from land and sea—but what about from under the surface of the ocean?

submarine Hawaii

Situated off the coast of balmy West Maui, Maui Submarine Tours dips visitors under the Pacific, where an array of glistening marine life—including eels, turtles, and rays—frolic in the clear-as-glass waters. The entertaining, erudite staff provides commentary and lessons throughout (consider it fodder for future trivia games) and allows guests to see the replica of one of Maui’s most infamous shipwrecks .

Maui may be home to some of the most fantastic marine life on the planet—think Spinner Dolphins, Humpback Whales, and Monk Seals—but it’s also home to a diverse set of sub-climates that are a total trip to experience.

Maui bike ride

Explore them on your own with a Maui bike tour . The best bikes and equipment (and an affable, expert driver and staff) enable travelers to coast down the slopes of Haleakala , where the alpine desert gives way to misty pastures and windswept beach towns . Incredible vistas unfold in every direction as the island’s beauty comes into breathtaking focus.

Cruising around the ocean may be an escape of its own, but the ‘Awili Spa & Salon offers a totally different type of oasis.

Maui Shore Excursions Andaz Spa

Voted one of the most transformational wellness destinations in the world by Town & Country, ‘Awili Spa & Salon—located in Wailea’s sleek Andaz Resort —offers apothecary experiences that take guests into an astonishing realm of relaxation. Try their Grounding Massage , which utilizes warm stones and deep-muscle bodywork. (Ahhh-loha, indeed.)

Feel the potency of the Pacific on Maui’s sunny south shore with a private surf lesson from a skilled group of water people that will empower your surfer inside.

maui surf lesson

Private instructions take guests away from the masses and onto some of the gentlest and greatest waves on the island. There, accomplished surf teachers provide lessons on everything from paddling to etiquette. Savor the sights in between sets and listen closely: The lessons gleaned here will serve you for a lifetime. And, yes, we realize this is a photo of a girl that can likely already surf (shortboard and all), but it’s a beautiful photo, right?

Have more than a few hours to spare? Take the Road to Hana .

waterfalls Hana

This region of Maui is called heavenly for a reason: Towering waterfalls pitch into freshwater pools surrounded by rainforests so thick all you see is green, while an ultra-stirring coastline—replete with black and red sand beaches, austere lava outcroppings, and dramatic blowholes —makes the heart skip with wonder. Catch the highlights with Hana and Beyond , a tour company that’s well-versed in East Maui’s rarest and most marvelous gems. Then surrender to the beauty and quiet: This is one of the most nourishing places on the planet and is one of the best Maui shore excursions.

Cruise Ship Shore Excursions

cruise ship tours maui

Overview of Hawaii Cruising

Cruising in the Hawaiian Islands ... an industry that has a rich heritage dating back to the days when airline travel from the West Coast of the USA to the Hawaiian Islands wasn't yet possible. Times have changed! While there are many different internationally-flagged cruise ships that pass through Hawaiian waters to and from the mainland, the vast majority of cruise ship passengers who enjoy a Hawaii vacation are not using the ship as a means of transportation to get to the islands. They are flying to and from Hawaii, and taking the NCL Pride of America, a US flagged ship that does weekly itineraries around the Hawaiian Islands that starts and ends in Honolulu. Because it is a US flagged ship it doesn't require a two-day detour to Fanning Island or a stop somewhere in Mexico at the beginning or ending of the cruise.

We have mixed feelings about some cruise vacations to Hawaii. You hop from island to island and get to see and do it all while you are here, right? Well, not exactly. Some cruise ship itineraries are so bad that you barely have a chance to see anything at all. The time in port can be so limited that your only choice for optional tours is to get on one of the cruise line's busses when you hit port and ride around with 70 other cruisers looking out the window. We don't call that "Getting to see and do it all."

Read this sentence over and over and let it sink in. Ready???

ENJOY your cruise ship when you are at sea ... GET AS FAR AWAY FROM IT AS POSSIBLE when you are on shore.

People who get off the ship and spend their time pointlessly walking around looking like a flightless dodo bird do not see and experience Hawaii. PERIOD. The shore excursions that the cruise ships offer tend to be mass-transit-oriented tours that move at the slowest pace of the oldest person in your group of 70. Get away from that crowd and make the most of your time in the islands!

The other thing you will find about shore excursions that the ships offer is that they are overpriced. The cruise ships often MARK UP the activities and tours well over the list price. This is typically done with the justification that the price includes transportation. It is not uncommon for a tour that we sell for $70 to cost $100 or more if purchased through your cruise line. Sometimes our $70 rate already includes transportation! Other times that rate may require a 5 minute cab ride, and you still save $25 or so per person. At the bottom of this page we make specific recommendations for tours, activities, and shore excursions for each port of call. You might also consider filling out the Cruise Ship Shore Excursion Information Request Form at the right side of this page. We will email you with our specific recommendations for the tours that you can do ... we'll even check availability for you!

We've now added notes to the bottom of each activity listed on Adventuremaui.com to let you know what tours are possible with your cruise ship itinerary and what transportation requirements are. Don't let the cruise line box you into the tours that they sell ... transportation and tours are easily arranged independently and you'll save a lot of money and improve your vacation experience considerably.

Hawaii Ports of Call

There are seven inhabited islands in the Hawaiian chain and seven days of cruising ... that means you get to spend one day on each island, right? Well, not exactly. Some of the islands don't have ports that can handle cruise ships at all (Niihau, Molokai, and Lanai). You'll be spending your cruise vacation on Oahu, Maui, Kauai, and the Big Island.

The next variable is that a few Hawaii ports do not have a dock that can handle cruise ships ... your floating hotel has to anchor off-shore and you need to take a tender to get to shore. Don't underestimate how much time will be lost tendering ... or plan a tour or event that is scheduled to depart 30 minutes after your cruise ship is set to arrive in port. Sometimes it can take 90 minutes or more to get to shore ... everybody wants to be the first one off. Unfortunately, some people get off right away ... others will end up waiting. There are two ports in Hawaii where tendering is required. If your cruise ship has the following ports of call, you will be tendering in ... Lahaina (Maui), and Kona (Big Island).

The rest of the ports of call have docking facilities ... Kahului (Maui), Honolulu (Oahu), Hilo (Big Island) and Nawiliwili (Kauai). This is really the best situation ... the ship pulls right up and docks it doesn't take long at all to walk onto shore no matter how many people are waiting for the doors to open. It makes it a lot easier to plan your shore excursions and schedule pickups shortly after the stated arrival time for your ship.

For Pride of America passengers on their normal itinerary, you only have one tender port to deal with during your vacation, and that is in Kona on the Big Island on Wednesday.

Ships We Recommend

The cruise ship itinerary that we like the best is Norwegian Cruise Line's Pride of America . This is the only ship that offers a staggering 100+ hours in port in Hawaii! The regular itinerary for this ship includes an overnight stay on Kauai, and an overnight stay in Kahului on Maui. This means that your best chance to get away from the ship and really see and do things is on these two islands. They also spend long days in port in Hilo and Kona. And since this cruise starts and ends in Honolulu, many cruisers fly to Hawaii a few days early and stay in Waikiki. The Pride of America has exactly the same itinerary week in and week out almost 98% of the time (if you happen to have a rare slightly-altered itinerary, just let us know and we'll make adjustments on our recommendations).

We DO NOT RECOMMEND cruises that start in the mainland and end in Hawaii, or vice versa! Hawaii is smack dab in the middle of the Pacific Ocean ... the largest body of water in the world. It is the most isolated island chain in the world. If your goal is to see Hawaii, don't spend most of your vacation at sea ... it just doesn't make sense! If you have more than a week to do a Hawaiian cruise vacation, try taking this approach instead ... do a one-week cruise that starts and ends in Hawaii, and then add a few extra days on Oahu, Maui, Kauai, or the Big Island after your cruise. And even if you only have a week, you might want to spend one full day in Honolulu prior to the start of your cruise ... this would give you time to see Pearl Harbor or Sea Life Park .

Our Shore Excursion Recommendations

These recommendations are mostly based upon the Pride of America Itinerary, with a few insights sprinkled here and there for other cruise ships.

Maui - (Kahului)

1. The famous downhill bike tour - either a sunrise tour or day journey. This tour includes pick-up at Kahului Harbor, transportation to the summit of Haleakala, all the biking equipment that you need, and the guide service down the mountain. It's a 23 mile downhill coast starting at the 6700 foot level and coasting all the way to the ocean in Paia with amazing scenery along the way. This tour can be arranged for your second day in port. Our rate for this tour is significantly less than what the cruise ships charge for the same experience. Maui Bicycle Tours

2. Aqua Adventures or Pride of Maui Molokini snorkel tours. Only morning tours reliably get to Molokini because of afternoon trade winds. This is a 10-15 minute cab ride from Kahului Harbor and can be done on your second day in port. Molokini Snorkel Tours

3. Hana tours - instead of the larger vehicles that the cruise ship uses, you can do a small group Hana tour in a 13 passenger vehicle with pick-up at the harbor. Hana Tours

Other cruise lines have itineraries that spend the night on Maui but they do it at Lahaina. They typically run tenders all night, so you do have some flexibility ... but keep in mind that you can't reliably plan a tour or activity for the first two hours or so after your arrival on day one because it might take you that long to get to shore. There are a variety of good Maui luaus for you to choose from on the West Side. In season you can do a whale watch in Lahaina. Atlantis Submarines is also available.

Big Island - (Hilo)

Hilo has limited tour choices available as there are few hotels on this side of the island. The major attraction here is Kilauea Volcano and we offer a tour of Volcanos National Park that picks you up at the dock in Hilo. The helicopter tour over Kilauea is also very popular, but this is NOT the helicopter tour we recommend. Most people are disappointed with the amount of lava they get to see, and this flight is not nearly as scenic as helicopter tours on Kauai. If you have the money to do two helicopter tours, then go for it. Otherwise, fly over Kauai!

Big Island - (Kona)

Your time in Kona is somewhat limited by the length of time it takes to tender to shore, and the fact that none of the cruise ships spend the night there. You can do Parasailing or Atlantis Submarines while you are there. You can also do a fishing charter or the Hula Kai Snorkel tour. This is one port where we aren't able to arrange rental cars. Due to the distance from downtown Kona to the airport Avis doesn't run rental car shuttles, and a cab to the airport to pick up a car would cost more than the car itself. Finally, a GREAT way to see the sites of the coffee farms, black lava fields, and the spectacular and historic "City of Refuge" is with the Historic Kona Tour .

Kauai - (Nawiliwili)

1. Kauai is the most amazing island to see from the air ... we recommend an Jack Harter helicopter tours. You are spending thousands of dollars per person to come to Hawaii ... it only makes sense to spend another $250 to really see the islands while you are here. There is no better way to see a lot in a short period of time. Jack Harter will even pick you up at the dock, and they offer two different helicopter styles including the very popular "doors-off" experience. For more information go to Kauai helicopter tours. We consider this to be this single most important "don't miss" event in any Hawaii cruise vacation.

2.  Ever heard of zip line tours? This is a blast! You wear a harness and clip onto steel cables that are stretched from one side of a gulch to the other. You soar over the jungle canopy with the greatest of ease! Backcountry Zipline is a short cab ride from the cruise ship, or rent a car and drive to the stunning North Shore of Kauai and our favorite Kauai zipline at Princeville Ranch. These are a LOT of fun ... be sure to check out this page at  Kauai zipline tours .

3. Kayak up the Wailua River and hike into the rainforest to see Secret Falls, an amazing waterfall and swimming hole. On this excursion you'll feel like the cruise ship crowd is a million miles away! For more information go to Kauai kayaking tours.

Oahu - (Honolulu)

Most cruises originate here ... if you are arriving a day or two early or are staying an extra day or so after your cruise you might consider Sea Life Park and their dolphin interaction programs. Oh and how could I forget? The most popular attraction in the state of Hawaii ... be sure to arrange your tour of Pearl Harbor with us. Many clients also arrange a luau at Chiefs Luau or Paradise Cove and check that event off their list before they start their inter-island itinerary on the Pride of America.

If you aren't on the Pride of America, you are probably just coming into Honolulu Harbor and docking at Aloha Tower for the day. This can be a tricky proposition. Some ships stay in port a lot later than others in Honolulu. We do have tours that will pick up at or near the harbor. Peruse our Oahu page on our sister website and if you see a tour that you really want to do and you want to make it work, give us a call. If it can work, we'll tell you. If it can't work, we won't sell it to you knowing it would cause a problem.

ACTIVITY TIPS

Kevin at Falls

I was at one of the cruise ship docks in Hawaii a few months ago and I just sat for a while watching people as they got off the ship. To my amazement I witnessed a number of cruise ship passengers walk over and climb onto a Wal-mart shuttle bus!!! I cannot fathom spending the time and money to come all the way to the beautiful Hawaiian islands and then spend one second of my time shopping at Wal-mart! For the LOVE OF GOD don't find yourself coming ashore with nothing better to do!

We are destination specialists for Hawaii . Your local travel agent tries to be an expert on wherever the next client wants to go on vacation. If you call us and want to tour the capitals of Europe we don't pretend to know anything about putting together such an itinerary. If you want to go trekking in the Himalayas don't call us ... we don't have a clue. But if you are planning a cruise vacation in Hawaii, doesn't it make sense to work with someone who knows the islands and actually lives here??? Try asking your local travel agent for a restaurant recommendation in Kahului ... first thing they'll have to do is figure out what COUNTRY it's in. Give us a call and make the most of your cruise vacation! We can plan shore excursions that will enhance your cruise itinerary.

Don't wait until you get on board the ship to make these arrangements either. Once you get onboard, you will find yourself vying for available space with 2,000 of your soon-to-be newly-made forced-to-become-not-so-close friends. We've heard stories of cruise ship passengers who filled out a form months in advance to request specific shore excursions from their cruise line, and then they were told they would find out what tours they were able to get once they got on the ship! Guess what! The ones they REALLY wanted to do ... they didn't get. Don't let that happen to you either! We offer a service that is personable, knowledgable, professional, and will save you money.

The cruise line might use a scare tactic to attempt to dissuade you from using our services ... they say you are taking a BIG RISK by reserving tours with us because you might not make it back to port in time and you'd miss the ship. The truth is ... we know what works and what doesn't work for cruise ship itineraries. We WILL NOT recommend a tour if there is any realtistic possibility that you could be late for the ship. We have assisted tens of thousands of cruise ship passengers arrange tours over the last 15 years. We have never ever, NEVER ever, NEVER EVER had ANYONE miss their ship on one of our tours. Not once. Never.

Risk? What risk??? If you could get those odds at Vegas I think you'd take them.

Best Hawaii cruise shore excursions

Donna Heiderstadt

A Hawaii cruise offers a convenient way to island-hop as you experience Oahu, Maui, Kauai and the island of Hawaii from both sea and land — but what exactly should you do while ashore? Choosing a cruise shore excursion in Hawaii can be tough since the 50th State offers a wide range of activities, including snorkeling and whale watching, visits to historic landmarks and sacred Hawaiian sites, and scenic excursions to breathtaking canyons and volcanoes. Foodies, fans of Hollywood blockbusters and thrill-seekers can easily get their fix, too.

With an average of eight to 10 hours on each island — although some cruises do stay overnight in select ports — it's possible to enjoy experiences that not only explore Hawaii's best-known natural, cultural and historic sites but also satisfy your own personal interests.

While shore excursion offerings, itineraries and prices vary by cruise line, here are our overall picks for the best Hawaii cruise shore excursions and what you can expect to pay.

Pearl Harbor

Price: $$-$$$

Pearl Harbor, one of Oahu's best-known sights, can be tricky to visit on your own because the historic World War II memorials commemorating the Dec. 7, 1941 bombing by the Japanese are located on an active military base with stringent security protocols. (No bags of any size are allowed and phones and wallets must be carried in a clear plastic bag or in a pocket.) A guided tour will get you into Pearl Harbor in a hassle-free manner and make it easy to visit the multiple sites — the USS Arizona Memorial, the USS Missouri battleship, USS Bowfin submarine and the Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum — with the required reservations already arranged.

Some cruise lines offer multiple Pearl Harbor excursions with variations in the sites visited, so be sure to read tour descriptions carefully. If your cruise begins or ends in Honolulu, Pearl Harbor visits are often offered on embarkation or disembarkation day packaged with a hotel or airport transfer. Other Pearl Harbor shore excursions include a Honolulu city tour that visits Diamond Head Crater and the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific.

Important to know: Most Pearl Harbor shore excursions last five to seven hours and are appropriate for all ages. There is quite a bit of walking involved and some stair climbing is required to visit the USS Missouri, where the formal surrender ceremony by the Japanese took place on Sept. 2, 1945, ending WWII. The somber USS Arizona Memorial, where 1,177 sailors and civilians died (many of them entombed in the sunken wreck) is reached by a short boat ride.

Diamond Head Crater hike

Diamond Head Crater, the photogenic volcanic landmark seen in many images of Waikiki Beach, isn't just amazing to look at — it's also incredible to climb. Active cruisers can take on the challenge during a guided Diamond Head adventure hike to its 763-foot summit. The payoff? Stunning 360-degree views of Waikiki, downtown Honolulu and the Pacific Ocean.

This excursion requires you to ascend a series of moderate but sometimes uneven switchback trails followed by a walk through a narrow 200-foot tunnel. You'll then climb up two sets of steep stairs (76 steps and 99 steps, respectively). Those who choose the more difficult route to the summit will need to climb the 99 steps and an interior spiral staircase to reach the historic lookout bunkers. If you choose the easier route to the summit up the scenic Loop Trail, you'll then descend into the bunker and down the spiral staircase and 99 steps. You can also retrace your steps and descend on the Loop Trail.

Important to know: Book an early morning tour if it's offered, since temperatures escalate quickly by midmorning; wear sneakers and a hat and bring sunscreen and water. The hike is about 1.6 miles roundtrip and takes 60 to 90 minutes depending on the group and the number of people on the trail; total tour time is three to three and a half hours.

Oahu's North Shore tour

If you've visited Honolulu before or simply prefer scenic locales to cities, a good option is a tour that whisks you away from the bustle of downtown Honolulu and Waikiki and through the Ko'oalu Mountains to the immersive beauty of Oahu's North Shore. This lush and dramatic coastline is known for the big waves that pound its beaches from October to March and for its waterfalls, sugarcane fields and historic fish ponds. The region is visually stunning and its small towns offer a chance to sample Hawaiian cuisine, especially garlic shrimp, and shop for locally grown products such as macadamia nuts and pineapples.

Highlights include big-wave surfers riding the famed Banzai Pipeline (during winter months); the Byodo Temple, a Buddhist shrine built amid towering green peaks in 1968 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the first Japanese immigrants to Hawaii; the waterfalls of Waimea Valley; and historic Haleiwa Town.

Important to know: North Shore excursions are typically five to seven hours in length with at least half the time spent on the tour bus. On sailings that end in Honolulu, some cruise lines offer panoramic North Shore tours combined with an airport drop-off (available for those with flights departing after 5:00 p.m.).

Iolani Palace and Hawaiian Monarchs tour

If Hawaii's royal history intrigues you, some cruise lines offer excursions that visit Iolani Palace, the final residence of the islands' kings and queens, and other sites of royal significance. Constructed in 1882, Iolani is the only royal palace in the United States; it was home to King Kalakaua, who built it, and his sister and successor, Queen Liliuokalani, who was imprisoned there after the U.S. annexed Hawaii. A circa-1883 statue of King Kamehameha I, who unified the Hawaiian Islands in 1810, and Kawaiahao Church, completed in 1842, are also nearby in downtown Honolulu.

Other royal sites that might be visited on a more extensive tour include the Pali Lookout, where Kamehameha I conquered the island of Oahu in 1795, and Mauna Ala, the royal mausoleum where six of the last eight Hawaiian monarchs are entombed.

Important to know: Most Iolani Palace and royal-focused shore excursions last about four hours and combine a bus tour with a self-guided audio tour of the palace.

Experiencing Haleakala Crater is on many Maui visitors' must-do lists and there are several ways to visit the slumbering 10,023-foot-tall volcanic peak that dominates the island's landscape. (Don't worry – it last erupted in 1790.) A few shore excursion options require that your cruise ship overnights in Kahului, the main port, or Lahaina, or has a late sail-away time.

Haleakala means "House of the Sun" and perhaps the most surreal experiences are tours at sunrise or sunset (available on sailings that overnight in Maui). To experience sunrise high above the clouds you'll need to depart the ship before 3:00 a.m. and wind your way up Haleakala's curving roadway in total darkness before watching the sun brighten the horizon and illuminate the vast 3,000-feet-deep crater with its dramatic orange-hued cinder cones. In contrast, a sunset tour lets you survey the crater and then watch as the sun disappears below the clouds and the night sky fills with twinkling stars. If you just want to experience Haleakala's scenic slopes and crater in daylight, panoramic sightseeing tours are also available.

If you're more adventurous, there are also Haleakala downhill biking tours, which transport you by minibus to an elevation of 6,500 feet and let you ride 14 miles down the switchback road on Haleakala's slopes amid the farms of Upcountry. Most bike tours do not offer access to the summit and crater.

Important to know: Haleakala tours typically last four to seven hours. Because of Haleakala's high altitude and volcanic nature, they aren't recommended for anyone with respiratory or heart problems. Temperatures are much cooler (45 to 65 degrees) at the summit, so bring a sweater or jacket.

Road to Hana

Driving Maui's legendary Road to Hana, a narrow, twisting, 52-mile route with more than 600 hairpin curves and 59 one-lane bridges, takes considerable concentration — but a Road to Hana tour on a professionally driven minibus frees everyone in your travel group to relax and enjoy the epic scenery along the way. Most cruise lines offer full-day excursions to Hana, a low-key hamlet located on the island's east coast amid jagged volcanic rocks and black-sand beaches.

Besides the thrill of this one-of-a-kind drive, which takes two to three hours to navigate, a Road to Hana excursion offers a chance to experience Maui's splendid bays and lush landscape of lava pinnacles, tropical fruit trees, giant ferns and rushing waterfalls. Highlights include the black-sand beach at Wai'anapanapa State Park, Pua'a Ka'a State Park and the Seven Sacred Pools of Ohe'o Gulch with its multiple cascades and soothing natural pools.

Important to know: Road to Hana excursions typically take nine to 10 hours, include lunch and aren't recommended for anyone prone to motion sickness. Sites visited vary by cruise line and some tours allow time for swimming.

Molokini Crater snorkel

Maui is home to one of the premier snorkel spots in Hawaii: Molokini, a mostly submerged crescent-shaped volcanic islet located about 2.5 miles off Maui's southern coast. This protected marine conservation site is reached via a scenic catamaran sail, during which guides will outfit you with snorkel gear and provide instructions for exploring these crystal-clear reef waters teeming with colorful sea life. Some excursions also visit Turtle Arches, lava formations known for frequent sea turtle sightings, and during humpback season (December to April), it's also possible to spot whales in the area.

Important to know: Molokini Crater snorkel tours are generally four hours long and all equipment, as well as breakfast, lunch or snacks and beverages, are provided. Water conditions can vary, so if seasickness is a problem, take that into consideration before booking.

Related: Ship-sponsored vs. independent shore excursions on cruises: Which should you book?

Whale watching

If you're cruising Hawaii between December and April and you're fascinated by whales, Maui offers a terrific opportunity to see pods of humpbacks in their winter playground. More than 10,000 of these charismatic giants migrate here annually to mate and give birth. Their activities — tail slaps, breaches and calves swimming alongside their mothers — are all on display as you venture out in a whale-watching boat, or perhaps a more adventurous Zodiac. Most tours are led by naturalist guides, and in some cases a portion of the cost is earmarked for conservation through the Pacific Whale Foundation.

Important to know: Expect to spend about three hours at sea as guides search for whales; sightings, while likely, aren't always guaranteed. Water conditions can also vary and seasickness is a possibility.

Waimea Canyon tour

Price: $-$$

Nicknamed the "Grand Canyon of the Pacific," Waimea Canyon is a 10-mile-long gorge known for the dramatic red and green hues of craggy cliffs that extend up to 3,000 feet below its rim. Located within Waimea Canyon State Park, which now requires reservations for individual visits, this scenic treasure can be viewed from lookout points.

A shore excursion that allows for about 30 minutes of viewing and picture taking is certainly the easiest way to see the canyon from a cruise ship. These tours include lots of scenic touring during the 90-minute drive each way between the cruise terminal and the canyon; many stop at the Spouting Horn blowhole or small towns in Kauai's Koloa district.

But there are caveats, namely that rainy conditions on Kauai, which is Hawaii's wettest island, can fog in the gorge and make for a disappointing outing. Kauai's driest months are April to September.

Important to know: Most Waimea Canyon excursions take four to five hours; some longer Best of Kauai excursions combine a visit to the canyon with a Wailua River cruise to the Fern Grotto.

Hollywood in Hawaii tour

Fans of "Jurassic Park" probably know that much of the 1993 Steven Spielberg movie was filmed on Kauai — but a number of other big-screen and TV classics were, too. Movie-set tours are popular excursions, especially for film buffs. These tours take place on minibuses or motor coaches outfitted with TV screens, so you can watch snippets of Hollywood movies where they were filmed and, in some places, get out and snap photos yourself.

Besides "Jurassic Park," other movies and TV shows filmed on the island include "Tropic Thunder," "Pirates of the Caribbean," "Six Days and Seven Nights," "Blue Hawaii," "South Pacific," "Donovan's Reef," "Gilligan's Island," "Fantasy Island" and "The Amazing Race."

Important to know: Most movie-set excursions take about five to six hours and primarily involve scenic touring — so even if you haven't seen the movies, it's an entertaining and comfortable way to sightsee Kauai.

Wailua River cruise and Fern Grotto

Price: $$ - $$$

Kauai is home to Hawaii's only navigable river, the Wailua River, which offers access to one of its lushest hidden spots: the Fern Grotto. This excursion combines a relaxing cruise with insights into Hawaiian culture and entertainment in the form of Hawaiian song and dance. The tourist boats that navigate this peaceful river through Wailua River State Park are run by a local family with members providing commentary.

Access to the Fern Grotto, a natural lava-rock cave covered with lush tropical vines, requires a 10-minute walk along a mostly flat, paved and shaded path. Upon arrival at the Fern Grotto, photo ops and additional entertainment await. Wailua River cruise tours also generally stop for picture-taking at Opaeka'a Falls, a 151-foot cascade that plunges into a secluded pool.

Important to know: Most Wailua River and Fern Grotto excursions are three to four hours long. Tours that combine those sights with a tour of Waimea Canyon last about seven hours and include lunch.

 Hilo, Hawaii

Hawaii Volcanoes National Park

While Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, one of Hawaii's most popular tourist attractions, is accessible from both cruise ports on the island of Hawaii, it's a quicker trip (about 30 to 35 minutes' drive each way) from Hilo. Most cruise lines offer excursions, but almost all of them are just a basic introduction that only touches on what this 505-square-mile national park has to offer.

The main activity involves visiting several viewpoints and steam vents on the rim of Kilauea Crater with a guide who offers commentary on this active volcano's history, geology and current status. It's unlikely you'll see molten lava, and most tours do not drive out along the famous Chain of Craters Road. Some tours, however, do include a walk through the 500-year-old Thurston Lava Tube.

Other longer and more costly excursions of up to seven hours combine a visit to the national park with a helicopter flight-seeing tour and/or stops at various waterfalls or gardens near Hilo.

Important to know: Standard Hawaii Volcanoes National Park tours are about four hours long, and many also make a stop at the Mauna Loa Macadamia Nut Visitor Center for tastings and shopping. The walk to the rim of the Kilauea crater is mostly on gravel or dirt pathways, but some areas overlooking the crater have potential trip hazards. Also, because the crater emits volcanic gases, these tours aren't advised for people with respiratory issues.

Hilo waterfalls and gardens

Hilo's location on the island of Hawaii's lush leeward side makes it a mecca for cascading waterfalls and verdant gardens. Cruise ship excursions that visit several falls or combine a visit to a single waterfall with a stop at a botanical garden, tropical zoo or orchid farm are popular.

The two major falls near Hilo are the 100-foot Rainbow Falls, which earned its name from the prismatic effect that takes place on sunny mornings, and the powerful Akaka Falls, which is reached via a walk through a tropical forest and tumbles a breathtaking 442 feet. Other tour stops could include Hilo's Liliuokalani Gardens (the largest Japanese garden outside of Japan), the Nani Mau Gardens or the Pana'ewa Rainforest Gardens and Zoo.

Important to know: Waterfalls and gardens shore excursions vary in length from four to seven hours, and participants should expect to be on their feet for a good portion of the tour. Rainbow Falls is easily accessible from the parking lot. To see Akaka Falls, you must navigate quite a few steps and walk a half-mile circular path.

Volcano Winery

The island of Hawaii is home to Volcano Winery, the southernmost winery in the U.S. If sipping vino is a favorite pastime — and you have a curious palate — an excursion here could be a relaxing way to spend a few hours. Volcano Winery, which is family-owned and located at an elevation of 4,000 feet, specializes in tropical blends by mixing distinctive local fruits such as yellow guava and even tea and honey with grape varietals that include Pinot Noir and Cayuga to produce uniquely flavored wines. It also produces some 100% grape wines.

Important to know: Excursions to Volcano Winery are generally three hours long and include a tour of the winery and a tasting.

Kona, Hawaii

Kona Coast snorkel

For passengers who didn't get a chance to snorkel in Maui, the waters just off Kona's rugged lava coast offer another excellent opportunity to spy on Mother Nature's underwater handiwork. Most cruise lines offer a snorkel excursion by catamaran that will allow even novices to don a mask and fins and behold the intricate coral and dazzling reef fish that call the area's tranquil bays and coves home. Dolphin spotting is also possible.

A more adventurous option is a snorkel tour by Zodiac, which combines the thrill of zipping around in a 24-foot motorized raft with enjoying up-close views of coastal caves and lava tubes — and some snorkel time, of course.

Important to know: Most catamaran snorkel excursions are appropriate for all ages, last about four hours and include either breakfast or lunch; all equipment, including flotation aids, is provided and some catamarans are equipped with a diving board and waterslide for added fun. Zodiac excursions are more physically demanding and are not recommended if you have back or neck problems; you also need to be able to climb back into the raft via a small four-rung ladder.

Atlantis Submarine

Price: $$-$$$$

If you've never been in a submarine, Kona offers a chance to see the area's abundant sea life as you venture 100 feet below the surface of the Kona coast's crystal-clear waters. The Atlantis Submarine (also operating on Maui and Oahu) is U.S. Coast Guard-certified, fully air-conditioned and offers individual viewing portholes.

Important to know: Atlantis Submarine excursions last about one and a half hours and are not recommended for anyone prone to claustrophobia or motion sickness; you must be at least 3 feet tall and able to climb a vertical 12-step ladder into and out of the submarine. Excursion costs vary widely from cruise line to cruise line.

Kona coffee tour

Kona is famous for the coffee that grows in its rich volcanic soil, so if you want to taste a cup of Joe right at the source, this port is the place to do it. Cruise lines offer a variety of coffee-themed excursions; some are geared to education about the farming and production process while others focus more on sampling the goods and buying souvenirs to take home.

Some foodie-focused tours combine coffee sipping with locally grown chocolate tastings and visits to Kona-based breweries, while other full-day excursions pair a visit to a coffee farm with a cloud forest tour or a tour of Kona's top historic sights and a snorkel in Kealakekua Bay.

Important info: Kona coffee excursions are mostly three to four hours long. However, costs vary widely depending on the type of excursion, from a simple tasting room visit to a farm-based roasting experience.

Place of Refuge and Painted Church

History buffs will find plenty to love on this guided bus excursion, which visits cultural and religious sites along the Kona Coast. Three key locations are on the itinerary, the first being Kealakekua Bay, where legendary Captain Cook met his demise at the hands of local Hawaiians in 1778 and is memorialized in a monument.

Nearby is the second stop: St. Benedict's Painted Church. While the outside of this small Catholic church built in 1899 looks traditional, the inside dazzles with the artwork of Father John Velghe, a Belgian priest who drew the murals in an effort to teach local Hawaiians how to read.

The third is Pu'uhonua O Honaunau, which means "Place of Refuge at Honaunau." Built in 1650 and carefully restored, this cultural site is an ancient Hawaiian religious sanctuary where the bones of Hawaiian chiefs were once stored. It later became a place of refuge for defeated warriors.

Important to know: Place of Refuge and Painted Church excursions are typically three to four hours long and involve a minimal amount of walking.

6 top luxury alaska cruises for 2024 & beyond.

Book a once-in-a-lifetime adventure to The Great Land on one of these top luxury ships.

Top Luxury Alaska Cruises

Veranda of Aquamarine Suite on Crystal cruise ship.

Cruising to Alaska on a small luxury ship affords a very different experience than sailing through The Great Land on a larger vessel. On a smaller luxury ship, you'll enjoy the expected perks like fewer passengers and more personalized service – but you'll also physically get closer to the boundless wilderness, abundant wildlife, icy blue glaciers and majestic snow-capped mountains that you've waited a lifetime to see.

While the fares to sail on such vessels are quite a bit higher than those of larger cruise providers, the all-inclusive (or mostly all-inclusive) prices typically include all-suite accommodations with balconies, all meals, alcoholic and nonalcoholic beverages, 24-hour room service, Wi-Fi access, gratuities, welcome bottles of sparkling wine, pillow selection, some shore excursions and butler service. Best of all, you won't feel like you're being nickel-and-dimed while on board. As a special touch, the attentive crew members may even learn your name and memorize your preferred pre-dinner cocktail.

Unlike many mainstream lines, most luxury Alaska cruises do not offer pre- and post-cruise tours to extend your adventure. However, you can plan these experiences on your own through third-party providers.

Alaska Tour & Travel has pre-cruise packages that include visits to Denali National Park & Preserve and the small, quirky Alaska towns of Homer and Talkeetna. You can also see a different side of Alaska via a train ride on the Alaska Railroad, take a national parks tour that includes Kenai Fjords National Park or head northbound to Fairbanks , one of the best places in the world to see the northern lights (if you visit during aurora season, from late August to late April). In addition, the company can plan a self-drive tour from Anchorage to Seward, which includes a stay at a wilderness lodge, helicopter flightseeing over Knik Glacier and guided tours in the parks.

The following luxury cruise lines will ensure you make the most of your voyage in Alaska – one of the most magical destinations on Earth.

Find your perfect cruise

Silversea Cruises

Pool deck on the Silversea Nova.

Courtesy of Silversea Cruises

Silversea Cruises' small luxury ships are designed for adventurers interested in visiting a mix of Alaska's top ports and more rugged, off-the-beaten-track locales. Extended itineraries offer stops in less-visited destinations like the towns of Haines and Wrangell. On board, guests can expect a personalized experience that includes luxurious ocean-view suites with butler service, multiple gourmet dining options, complimentary alcoholic and nonalcoholic beverages, and attentive service with one of the highest crew-to-guest ratios in the industry.

Base fares for Silversea's 2024 and 2025 Alaska itineraries start at $3,250 per person. If you upgrade to Silversea 's door-to-door fare (which starts at $5,200 per person), you'll receive private chauffeur service from your home to the airport (and back home upon your return) and round-trip flights, with business class upgrades in some destinations.

Silversea also offers immersive pre- and post-cruise land experiences, departing from Seward, Alaska. Highlights include sightseeing flights over Denali National Park & Preserve or into bear country to see Alaska's magnificent grizzly bears. In Vancouver, travelers can take a flightseeing transfer to Victoria to tour the 55-acre Butchart Gardens or board the Rocky Mountaineer for a two-day train ride through the Canadian Rockies.

Silversea's Alaska itineraries extend from May to September, with voyages ranging between seven and 16 days. The line's newest and largest vessel, the 728-passenger Silver Nova , sails its inaugural Alaska season in 2024 along with two smaller ships, Silver Muse (596 guests) and Silver Shadow (392 guests). There are 35 Alaska voyages available in 2024. In 2025, luxury cruisers can hop aboard one of 45 scheduled voyages on either Silver Nova or the 596-guest Silver Moon .

For a seven-day itinerary, consider a sailing from Seward, Alaska, to Vancouver, British Columbia. This voyage cruises the Hubbard Glacier and the Inside Passage and stops in the Alaska towns of Juneau, Skagway, Sitka and Ketchikan. Complimentary excursions in Ketchikan include a tour of Saxman Native Village; a visit to Bonfire Bay Oyster Farm, featuring a sea-to-table oyster tasting; the Alaskan Cultural, Culinary & Lumberjack show; the Alaskan Lodge Adventure & Seafeast and a day as a fisherman aboard the Aleutian Ballard, as seen on Discovery Channel's "The Deadliest Catch." You can also opt for a Selected Shore Excursion (for an additional cost), such as mountain biking or a private fishing trip.

Regent Seven Seas Cruises

Bed in the Concierge Suite on the Regent Seven Seas Explorer.

Courtesy of Regent Seven Seas Cruises

Regent Seven Seas Cruises' elegant Seven Seas Explorer sails the line's Alaska itineraries in 2024 and 2025. The lavish 746-guest ship was coined "The Most Luxurious Ship Ever Built" when it debuted in 2016; among its impressive features are the 3,875-square-foot Regent Suite and a high-end collection of art displayed throughout the ship, including works by Pablo Picasso.

Alaska voyages with Regent in 2024 and 2025 start at $4,799 per person. Upgraded 2-for-1 all-inclusive fares (starting at $5,499 per person) cover elegant all-balcony suite accommodations; round-trip airfare (business class on international flights); a one-night pre-cruise hotel package; free two- or three-night land programs; free unlimited shore excursions; free unlimited beverages (alcoholic and nonalcoholic); complimentary specialty dining; and prepaid gratuities. You'll also receive complimentary airport transfers, unlimited Wi-Fi access and valet laundry service.

Every suite style includes a private balcony, roomy closets and upscale finishes. Concierge Suites (and above) add cozy in-room amenities like cashmere blankets, perfect to bundle up in while you take in the scenery. Meanwhile, Penthouse Suites (and higher) include a private butler who can book excursions, make dinner and spa reservations, unpack your luggage, arrange for a private cocktail soiree in your suite and indulge any other special requests.

Between May and September 2024, Regent sails 22 Alaska voyages. There are 16 Alaska sailings scheduled for the same period in 2025. Itineraries range from seven to 14 nights. For plenty of scenic cruising days, consider a round-trip itinerary from Vancouver departing May 28, 2025. The cruise includes five relaxing days at sea, where you'll enjoy scenic cruising through the Inside Passage (twice), Hubbard Glacier (twice) and Endicott Arm Fjord. Ports of call in Alaska include Wrangell, Juneau , Skagway, Sitka, Seward, Icy Strait (Hoonah) and Ketchikan. You'll also have a full day in Victoria, British Columbia, before returning to Vancouver.

While in Wrangell, consider the Tongass Botanical Forest Walk excursion. Tongass National Forest is the largest national forest in the U.S., with towering old-growth trees and unique flora, fauna and ecosystems. While in the temperate rainforest with your naturalist guide, look for local wildlife like Sitka black-tailed deer, porcupines and birds of prey. Other complimentary excursions at this stop include a round of golf at Muskeg Meadows Golf Course; a canoe trip through Wrangell harbor and nearby islands, and a heritage tour about Tlingit culture and the history of the town.

Nobu restaurant on a Crystal cruise ship.

Recently relaunched Crystal offers just seven voyages in Alaska aboard Crystal Serenity in July and August 2024. The 740-guest luxury vessel was refurbished in 2023 and features the line's signature top-notch service, elegant interiors and suites, and personal butler service in every room category.

Other perks and amenities include plush bathrobes and Sicily's Ortigia bath products; an impressive passenger-to-crew ratio; prepaid gratuities; complimentary beverages; and outstanding cuisine, including Umi Uma (an exclusive Nobu restaurant at sea, available only on Crystal Serenity and Crystal Symphony ). Guests can also feast on Italian cuisine at Osteria d'Ovidio; book an exclusive dining experience at The Vintage Room; indulge in Parisian cafe-style fare at The Bistro; opt for American cuisine at Waterside Restaurant or take their pick of several other casual indoor and alfresco options.

Cruisers also have their selection of unique shore experiences curated by Crystal's parent company A&K Travel Group, such as a ride on the world's largest zip line in Hoonah (Icy Strait Point); dog sledding and glacier flightseeing in Skagway; fishing and wilderness dining in Ketchikan and the Wildlife Quest and Fin Island Lodge experience in Sitka, boasting a feast of Alaska king crab and wild salmon.

Crystal offers seven- and eight-night round-trip voyages from Vancouver , as well as one-way cruises from Vancouver or Seward, Alaska. Select itineraries – like the July 30, 2024, voyage from Vancouver to Seward – offer a scenic cruising day in the Seymour Narrows in British Columbia. On this sailing, you'll also enjoy a day at sea cruising Hubbard Glacier, as well as stops in Ketchikan, Sitka, Hoonah (Icy Strait), Skagway and Sitka in Alaska. Or, opt for the July 2, 2024, round-trip sailing from Vancouver for three scenic cruising days in the Inside Passage, Endicott Arm and the Seymour Narrows.

The line's Aug. 13, 2024, round-trip sailing from Vancouver features a special guest: Manfredi Lefebvre d'Ovidio, the executive chairman of A&K Travel Group. As such, the cruise will include an exclusive gala dinner and other unique experiences. Other special voyages welcome marine biologist and National Geographic photographer Flip Nicklin, who will share personal stories from his extensive career and expert insights about humpback whale habitats and behaviors.

Viking Ocean Cruises' 11-day Alaska & the Inside Passage cruise is available on 11 dates during the 2024 season. It sails from Vancouver to Seward (or the reverse) on the 930-passenger Viking Orion . In 2025, the line offers the same itinerary on 22 dates between May and September, split between Viking Orion and its sister ship, the 930-passenger Viking Sea .

Viking's destination-focused itineraries are curated for travelers who are interested in history, science, culture and cuisine, as they feature onboard enrichment like lectures by Viking's resident historians. You'll also find regionally inspired dishes in The Restaurant and special access to unique tours and excursions ashore.

The line's mostly all-inclusive fares cover accommodations in spacious all-veranda staterooms and suites; beer, wine and soft drinks at lunch and dinner; meals at all the dining venues; one shore excursion in every port; free Wi-Fi access; 24-hour specialty teas, coffees and bottled water; complimentary access to The Nordic Spa & Fitness Center; and other upscale amenities.

Voyages traveling northbound from Vancouver include one day of scenic cruising through the Inside Passage before stopping in Ketchikan, Sitka, Juneau, Skagway and Icy Strait Point in Alaska. The eighth day of the cruise sails through picturesque Yakutat Bay, which includes the Hubbard Glacier. The ship then calls on Valdez, Alaska, before the trip ends with two days in Seward.

While in Valdez, take an optional tour to explore the incredible scenery surrounding the small fishing town. Viking offers a kayaking trip to see the Valdez Glacier; a scenic cruise through picturesque Prince William Sound to view the Columbia Glacier; a wildlife cruise where you can look for humpback whales, orcas, porpoises, sea otters and bald eagles; a helicopter ride over the area's rugged, icy wilderness; or a UTV adventure through the Chugach Mountains to Mineral Creek Canyon.

Between May and August 2024, Seabourn Cruise Line will host 20 Alaska voyages aboard the Seabourn Odyssey , before the ship leaves the cruise line in the fall. In 2025, the line offers 27 Alaska sailings on Seabourn Quest. Both yacht-inspired ships accommodate up to 458 guests and feature Seabourn's signature all-inclusive amenities, including luxurious oceanfront suites with verandas; personalized service; complimentary fine wines and premium spirits; complimentary dining; and caviar served throughout the sailing. You'll also have a complimentary W-Fi package and an in-suite minibar stocked with your favorite beverages. Ashore, sign up for exclusive programs like shopping for fresh salmon, halibut and Alaska king crab alongside a Seabourn chef.

Guests booking Seabourn Quest for 2025 will be able to sample the line's new dining concept, Solis. Inspired by destinations in the Mediterranean, the menu features a fresh, modern take on traditional dishes and whimsical cocktails. The restaurant is a collaboration with master chef and culinary partner Anton Egger and senior corporate chef Franck Salein. In addition to dishes like salt-encrusted whole branzino and Tuscan-style steak, guests will also find a wide selection of vegan and vegetarian dishes.

The seven-day Alaska Fjords & Canadian Inside Passage itinerary on May 31, 2024, aboard Seabourn Odyssey, sails from Juneau to Vancouver and includes a day in either Tracy Arm or Endicott Arm, depending on the ice conditions. From there, you can take one of the optional guided excursions: Ventures by Seabourn. These tours are an additional cost but offer opportunities for up-close Zodiac, kayaking or catamaran experiences in the wilderness to see glaciers calving and view local wildlife, such as black bears, mountain goats, seals, wolves and seabirds.

You'll also enjoy many days of scenic cruising on this voyage, and have the opportunity for more optional adventures in Rudyerd Bay (Misty Fjords). The ship makes additional stops in Wrangell, Alaska, and Prince Rupert, British Columbia, before disembarking in Vancouver.

If you want to see stunning Glacier Bay National Park & Preserve, then consider booking the seven-day Alaska Inside Passage & Glacier Bay sailing on May 10, 2024, from Vancouver to Juneau. This itinerary also includes the Seymour Narrows and Snow Pass, cruising Queen Island Sound and the Lynn Canal. There's a stop for Ventures by Seabourn activities like kayaking and Zodiac rides in the Inian Islands. The Alaska ports of call on this voyage are Ketchikan, Sitka, Icy Strait Point and Haines. You'll disembark in Juneau.

French luxury expedition line PONANT offers 10 Alaska cruises in 2024; itineraries span between seven and 11 nights. Aboard the 264-guest yacht-style Le Soléal, you'll meet up to 10 naturalist experts and guides specializing in geology, history, ornithology or marine or land mammals. Guests can attend onboard lectures and embark on Zodiac landings with the guides.

The ship features elegant staterooms and suites, a library, a spa, a hair salon and a gym. Guests will be treated to movies in the theater, wine tastings and cooking demonstrations throughout the expedition. All fine dining meals, 24-hour room service, an open bar (including an in-room minibar) and complimentary and unlimited Wi-Fi access are covered in the pricing.

Two of PONTANT's eight-night voyages from Vancouver to Sitka are in partnership with Smithsonian Journeys and are curated for English-speaking travelers. Fares for these expeditions include transfers to and from the ship and a shore excursion in each port. On board, you can attend talks and discussions hosted by two Smithsonian Journeys experts: geologist Scott Burns and natural history filmmaker John Grabowska.

On these voyages, there is a sea day after departing Vancouver. You'll cruise through the Johnstone Strait, where you'll have an excellent chance of seeing humpback whales and orcas. After a day spent in the Inside Passage, the ship will call on the village of Metlakatla, Alaska, on the western coast of Annette Island, which is home to the Tsimshians from British Columbia. Other unique Alaska ports of call in this itinerary include the commercial fishing town of Petersburg, the Tlingit village of Kake and the small fishing community of Alfin Cove.

Power outages have been reported in St. Petersburg, Rostov, Volgograd, Voronezh, and Primorsky. Meanwhile, a huge fire tore through a large warehouse used by Russia ’s largest online retailer south of St Petersburg on Saturday morning.

The blaze covered an area of 70,000 square meters, with 50,000 square meters of the Wildberries warehouse collapsing, according to Russia ’s Emergency Situations Ministry. No casualties were reported.

Videos posted to social media appeared to show employees running down fire escapes and fleeing the scene. A video shot from a passenger jet flying nearby showed flames totally engulfing the warehouse, sending huge plumes of smoke into the sky.

Fun facts from our Moscow Metro Tours:

From the very first days of its existence, the Moscow Metro was the object of civil defense, used as a bomb shelter, and designed as a defense for a possible attack on the Soviet Union.

At a depth of 50 to 120 meters lies the second, the coded system of Metro-2 of Moscow subway, which is equipped with everything you need, from food storage to the nuclear button.

According to some sources, the total length of Metro-2 reaches over 150 kilometers.

The Museum was opened on Sportivnaya metro station on November 6, 1967. It features the most interesting models of trains and stations.

Coffee Ring

The first scheme of Moscow Metro looked like a bunch of separate lines. Listen to a myth about Joseph Stalin and the main brown line of Moscow Metro.

Zodiac Metro

According to some astrologers, each of the 12 stops of the Moscow Ring Line corresponds to a particular sign of the zodiac and divides the city into astrological sector.

Astrologers believe that being in a particular zadiac sector of Moscow for a long time, you attract certain energy and events into your life.

Paleontological finds

Red marble walls of some of the Metro stations hide in themselves petrified inhabitants of ancient seas. Try and find some!

  • Every day each car in  Moscow metro passes  more than 600 km, which is the distance from Moscow to St. Petersburg.
  • Moscow subway system is the  5th in the intensity  of use (after the subways of Beijing, Tokyo, Seoul and Shanghai).
  • The interval in the movement of trains in rush hour is  90 seconds .

Touring the Top 10 Moscow Metro Stations

By Claudia Looi 2 Comments

Komsomolskaya metro station

Komsomolskaya metro station looks like a museum. It has vaulted ceilings and baroque decor.

Hidden underground, in the heart of Moscow, are historical and architectural treasures of Russia. These are Soviet-era creations – the metro stations of Moscow.

Our guide Maria introduced these elaborate metro stations as “the palaces for the people.” Built between 1937 and 1955, each station holds its own history and stories. Stalin had the idea of building beautiful underground spaces that the masses could enjoy. They would look like museums, art centers, concert halls, palaces and churches. Each would have a different theme. None would be alike.

The two-hour private tour was with a former Intourist tour guide named Maria. Maria lived in Moscow all her life and through the communist era of 60s to 90s. She has been a tour guide for more than 30 years. Being in her 60s, she moved rather quickly for her age. We traveled and crammed with Maria and other Muscovites on the metro to visit 10 different metro stations.

To Maria, every street, metro and building told a story. I couldn’t keep up with her stories. I don’t remember most of what she said because I was just thrilled being in Moscow.   Added to that, she spilled out so many Russian words and names, which to one who can’t read Cyrillic, sounded so foreign and could be easily forgotten.

The metro tour was the first part of our all day tour of Moscow with Maria. Here are the stations we visited:

1. Komsomolskaya Metro Station  is the most beautiful of them all. Painted yellow and decorated with chandeliers, gold leaves and semi precious stones, the station looks like a stately museum. And possibly decorated like a palace. I saw Komsomolskaya first, before the rest of the stations upon arrival in Moscow by train from St. Petersburg.

2. Revolution Square Metro Station (Ploshchad Revolyutsii) has marble arches and 72 bronze sculptures designed by Alexey Dushkin. The marble arches are flanked by the bronze sculptures. If you look closely you will see passersby touching the bronze dog's nose. Legend has it that good luck comes to those who touch the dog's nose.

3. Arbatskaya Metro Station served as a shelter during the Soviet-era. It is one of the largest and the deepest metro stations in Moscow.

4. Biblioteka Imeni Lenina Metro Station was built in 1935 and named after the Russian State Library. It is located near the library and has a big mosaic portrait of Lenin and yellow ceramic tiles on the track walls.

5. Kievskaya Metro Station was one of the first to be completed in Moscow. Named after the capital city of Ukraine by Kiev-born, Nikita Khruschev, Stalin's successor.

7. Kurskaya Metro Station was one of the first few to be built in Moscow in 1938. It has ceiling panels and artwork showing Soviet leadership, Soviet lifestyle and political power. It has a dome with patriotic slogans decorated with red stars representing the Soviet's World War II Hall of Fame. Kurskaya Metro Station is a must-visit station in Moscow.
