Nish Kumar announces 2024 tour

45 dates for Nish, Don’t Kill My Vibe

Nish Kumar has announced 45-date tour for 2024, entitled Nish, Don’t Kill My Vibe.

The show – which kicks off at the Hackney Empire in London on September 7  – is set to tackle ‘climate collapse, income inequality and the emotional sensation of being a British Indian man who isn’t going to vote for a British Indian Prime Minister’.

And the blurb promises – or threatens – ‘in this election year, with the country in turmoil, there’s only one comedian who can kill the mood even further…’

Kumar himself said: ‘As the world collapses around us, I look forward to dragging my increasingly decrepit body out on tour and doing the only thing that still makes sense to me – stand-up comedy.’

The comic has twice been nominated for the Edinburgh Comedy Award, in 2015 and 2016, while his last tour, 2022’s Your Power, Your Control was released as a special on Sky Comedy last year.

His credits include Taskmaster, Live At The Apollo, QI  and Have I Got News For You and he  currently hosts the topical Pod Save The UK podcast with  journalist Coco Khan.

Tickets for Nish, Don’t Kill My Vibe tour go on sale on Friday.

Nish Kumar on turning a bread roll into a comedy show

There can't be too many comedy touring shows this year revolving around the throwing of a bread roll. Nish Kumar 's Your Power, Your Control strongly features that time he was on the receiving end of a baked-product hurling at a charity gig. For a while he was an undisputed rising star of the British stand-up scene with one excellent Edinburgh Fringe show after another and media appearances ranging from hosting Newsjack on the radio and The Mash Report on TV, to cropping up on everything from Question Time (twice) to Sunday Brunch (five times).

Eventually, he has plonked himself firmly near the top of the country's comedy pile. That, of course, doesn't mean Nish will be free of having non-admirers, one of whom saw fit to chuck an oblong loaf in his general direction during an anti-Brexit routine he was delivering at the Lord's Taverners Christmas lunch in 2019 .

This flour-based outrage allows Nish to find plenty humour in an already daft incident with his audience anticipating how it will all pan out (pan, of course, almost being the French word for bread). "I looked to my right and saw it rolling near me and I just had to say, 'did someone throw a bread roll at me?' There was a table of comedians there and I saw Tim Key 's face through the darkness: he was just nodding at me. I think Chris Addison was having an argument with the bread thrower but the identity of that person remains unclear to me."

During Your Power, Your Control , Nish places the bread-roll incident into the context of his worst five gigs ever, which also finds a place for a night during his Edinburgh Fringe debut run in 2012 when a seat was taken in his 50-seater room by one Victoria Wood . To all intents and purposes not only was this national treasure not especially rolling in the aisles, but she also looked extremely displeased throughout.

"It's like your nightmare day," recalls Nish with a grimace. "I saw her when I walked on stage and, in that venue, she was too famous for all the attention in the room not to be fixated on her. I'm not by any means in the pantheon of British culture and she is one of the most beloved comedians of all time, but if I go to a show and know I'm very visible, I definitely do my best to make sure that it looks like I'm having a good time."

Nish is keen at this point to emphasise that Victoria Wood is among those whose work he has long adored and still fully respects her as a comedy icon. "If you look at Acorn Antiques there's something of the Garth Marenghi about it. But then you look at dinnerladies , and everyone - my parents, my grandparents - we all loved it. So obviously her having a bad time at my gig is a low career point for me."

So far it seems that Your Power, Your Control is focussing on those people who have not been admirers of Nish's comedy, but the many thousands of stand-up fans who will buy tickets for this tour will attest to the fact that his work is widely admired. His sharp political commentary and fierce intelligence are both allied to a solid sense of fun, which will be evidenced in a routine where he pokes a pointy, if metaphorical, stick straight down the gullet of the national anthem.

It would be unfair to reveal exactly how this unfolds except to say that it's the closest Nish has come to the confrontational tactics of Stewart Lee where a repeated phrase or gesture carries on for quite a long time. "It has got longer every night [in his work-in-progress shows] because it's as much fun as I've ever had on stage. But I don't have the stones or iron will of Stewart Lee . That man has balls of steel and he would just keep going with it."

And we should broach the subject of Your Power, Your Control as a title, a note of relative brevity from a man whose show-names have so far included Actions Speak Louder Than Words, Unless You Shout The Words Real Loud , and Long Word... Long Word... Blah Blah Blah... I'm So Clever .

"The long-winded title is my metier, that's my brand," Nish confesses. "I did have more long-winded titles in mind but there was a lightbulb moment where I thought 'yes, that's it'. My therapist used the phrase when he said to me 'you've got to focus on what's in your power and in your control', and I thought 'that's a good title for something'. The phrase occurs in the show in its entirety and I thought it would be nice to have a title from a phrase that does pop up in the show at some point. I think Power, Corruption And Lies would have been good, but New Order had already taken that"

Your Power, Your Control may not be pinned down to a single meaning but it's a title that will be accompanied by more than meaningful comedy. Smart, sharp, and not afraid to be a little bit silly: now that could be the ultimate Nish Kumar brand.

Nish Kumar: ‘I’ve given up trying to reason with people who despise me’

By David Levesley

Image may contain Nish Kumar Human Person Clothing Sleeve Apparel Electrical Device Microphone and Crowd

Days after I speak to Nish Kumar, I can’t shake the memory of his laugh: it’s bold, big, a bit saucy. The sort of laugh you save for co-conspirators. It’s the guffaw of someone who truly, honestly, has no fucks left to give.

Nish has reason to be angry. Not constant cloud-over-head anger, not going berserk, just accepting he is allowed to be infuriated at some bits of society. In the Guardian he has just revealed that there is a long-standing pattern of institutions, including ones he makes money for, calling him “Nish Patel” or confusing him with other Asian comedians. But that’s not to say the virulent racism of people on the internet is getting let off easy, either.

“Being on television and being brown, it does unlock some of the elements…” he begins, trying to be a diplomat. Then he changes tact. “To be honest, I don’t give a shit. I just don’t care what those people think of me any more. I’ve given up trying to reason with people who despise me.”

This content can also be viewed on the site it originates from.

Kumar is, it’s safe to say, angry. And what’s more, he’s bringing that energy to his 2019 tour: It's In Your Nature To Destroy Yourselves is topical, furious and partially different every single night.

You may know Nish Kumar from... well, just about everywhere. He is a ubiquitous face among the current crop of British comedians and has done all the stops: Have I Got News For You , QI , Taskmaster . You may know him for his work on the BBC radio show Newsjack or from his award-winning comedy shows that made him a darling of the Edinburgh Fringe . But you probably know him for his late-night BBC satirical comedy show The Mash Report .

‘There’s a real appetite for opinion-driven satire, not just generic making jokes about what’s in the news’

That’s a sentence nobody expected us to be saying when it was announced: The Mash Report , aiming to give Brits something between John Oliver, Jon Stewart and The Onion, was written off before it even began. “I honestly think people had such low expectations that we benefitted from it,” says Kumar, laughing. “There were articles the week before [saying] that it was going to fail. Then the first episode went out and people said, ‘Oh, it’s not so bad.’”

Since then, The Mash Report has become a bubbling hotbed of the kind of viral takedown monologues America has perfected: Rachel Parris’ takedown of Me Too critics, or her condemnation of Donald Trump and/or Jacob Rees-Mogg , or Ellie Taylor talking about the paradoxical expectations placed on women have all leapt into the realms of the viral and are still regular features on anyone’s news feeds.

How did it come to succeed? Well, they listened to what the audiences, both in the studio and out, seemed to want from them. “I think that there’s a real appetite for opinion-driven satire, not just generic making jokes about what’s in the news but actually point-of-view-driven stuff. We found that the response from the audience – and, to be honest, our viewing figures – has increased as we got more and more… I don’t want to say edgy… as we got more and more pointedly satirical,” explains Kumar. “I think there’s a real appetite for the gloves to come off.”

What has always amazed me about The Mash Report is that it’s a show led by a man in which he is constantly playing the stooge to the women around him. One of the best parts of Rachel Parris’ viral videos are the way she stands smiling blithely like – to quote Kumar – “a Stepford wife”, while also tearing him and the rest of society to tatters.

“Rachel was very rude to me immediately,” remembers Kumar, who had known her for years before the show. “I think maybe even in the pilot that didn’t air, I said something to her and she responded in such a withering way. It was so funny.”

‘Critics of representation believe it somehow compromises quality to include marginalised voices, but where I’m standing it makes everything so much funnier‘

It also helps that the show let Parris take command over her own material on the subject of misogyny. When they came back to the show after the Me Too movement had really exploded, it was “a pretty bleak couple of months, and realising as a male comic that you’ve been involved in a system that allows abusers to survive on an institutional level”. So they decided that what people needed was comedy about the movement led by a woman’s voice.

“Critics of representation believe it somehow compromises quality to include marginalised voices, but where I’m standing it makes everything so much funnier,” says Kumar. “Our show is better for the contributions of people like Rachel or Karen [Dickinson].”

Now Nish Kumar is back with his latest comedy show, which did the rounds at the Fringe and did a few dates this year (“All the reviews mention my voice screeching, which I don’t think they mean as a compliment”) but the longest stretch will be in 2019. What’s it about? “The absolute cesspool of the political situation in Britain and America.” How long is it? “Eighty minutes: about 60 of it is locked in and then there’s 15-20 minutes that’s deliberately designed to be loose and adjust to whatever’s happening.”

‘I’ve lost my capacity to temper my frustration’

Kumar is well aware that, when you’re a comedian who takes on politics, it’s best not to think the set you prepared a few months ago is still going to be relevant in weeks, days or hours. Kumar recounted writing his 2016 show only to have to completely rewrite the ending for Brexit, and coming back to a tour that November after Trump had won knowing he had to give it a remix.

“I’ll run from January up until the weekend of Brexit, so you’ve got to be prepared,” adds Kumar. “I mean, worryingly, the key facts have not changed: I was going out in October saying we’ve got no plan and everything is going to shit. That much is still true.”

Well established as a political comedian, Kumar’s It’s In Your Nature To Destroy Yourselves – the latest in a line of wittily named, political shows – takes him from clever to furious. “I’ve lost my capacity to temper my frustration and I think it’s an angry show,” he concludes. “It’s still on piste with the work I’ve been doing, but hopefully it’s funnier.”

Nish Kumar Coming To Liverpool As Part of UK Tour

Photo of Editor

Nish Kumar – host of  The Mash Report  and  Pod Save the UK  – has announced a brand-new live tour of the UK and Ireland for 2024.  Nish, Don’t Kill My Vibe  is the latest offering from one of the UK’s most thrilling political comedians – the tour will call at Liverpool’s Playhouse Theatre on 4 October 2024.

In this election year, with the country in turmoil, there’s only one comedian who can kill the mood even further…

Nish Kumar – named as one of The Guardian and The Telegraph’s 50 Best Comedians of the 21st Century – will be tackling climate collapse, income inequality and the emotional sensation of being a British Indian man who isn’t going to vote for a British Indian Prime Minister. It’s 80 minutes of sweet, sweet vibe killing, plus support act and interval.

Nish Kumar said:  “As the world collapses around us, I look forward to dragging my increasingly decrepit body out on tour and doing the only thing that still makes sense to me – stand up comedy.”

Internationally famed meme Nish has achieved huge success on the stand-up circuit with five rave reviewed solo stand-up shows at the Edinburgh Fringe, two of which have been nominated for the prestigious Edinburgh Comedy Award for Best Show in both 2015 and 2016. Nish’s last tour,  Your Power, Your Control , played to sell out audiences up and down the country and was critically acclaimed when it debuted in 2022, it was also released as a special on Sky Comedy in 2023.

Widely celebrated for his previous role as host of both  The Mash Report (BBC Two)  and  Late Night Mash , Nish is a frequent voice and face across both television and radio – he currently hosts the popular  Pod Save The UK  podcast, and is regularly seen on shows such as  Taskmaster  (Dave),  Live At The Apollo  (BBC Two),  QI (BBC), Have I Got News For You  (BBC One) , The John Bishop Show  (BBC One),  8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown  (Channel 4),  Russell Howard’s Stand-Up Central ,  Drunk History  and  Frankie Boyle’s New World Order  (BBC Two).

Nish also released a Netflix special as part of the  Comedians of The World  series, and he appeared alongside fellow comics Joel Dommett in 12-part travelogue  Joel & Nish vs The World  for Comedy Central and Josh Widdicombe in Sky Max’s  Hold The Front Page .

Nish created two series of his own topical show for BBC Radio 4,  Spotlight Tonight , as well as previously hosting both  The News Quiz  (BBC Radio 4) and  Newsjack (BBC Radio 4 Extra),  which won the Rose d’Or for Radio Comedy when he hosted.

Tickets for Nish Kumar’s UK and Ireland tour go on sale Friday 26 January and will be available from   www.nishkumar.co.uk .

Nish Kumar announced as host of Amnesty Media Awards 2024

13 Mar 2024 , 10:59am

Comedian, presenter and political commentator Nish Kumar set to host Amnesty International UK’s upcoming Media Awards

Awards will take place at Amnesty UK’s Human Rights Action Centre on 9 May and will also be livestreamed

‘More than ever journalists and the brave work they do – often at huge personal risk - needs to be championed and celebrated’ – Nish Kumar

Amnesty International UK has announced Nish Kumar as the host of its 32nd annual Media Awards, which celebrate excellence in UK human rights journalism.

Host of TV programmes including Late Night Mash (formerly known as The Mash Report) and Newsjack, Nish Kumar is one of the biggest names in comedy. He is also the co-host of the political podcast Pod Save the UK.

Nish has collaborated with Amnesty UK in previous years, taking part in the Secret Policeman's Tour in 2019 and the Secret Policeman’s Ball Unlocked in 2020.

Speaking of the Media Awards, Kumar said:

“I'm truly honoured to be hosting the 32nd Amnesty International UK Media Awards. “Globally we are living through a time of unprecedented instability and conflict. More than ever journalists and the brave work they do - often at huge personal risk - needs to be championed and celebrated. “Without journalists injustices go unrecorded, human rights are tossed aside by those in power, and the planet becomes a more dangerous place for all of us - now and in the future. These awards are important - not just to the people whose work we will be shining a light on, but to everyone across the globe.”

About the Media Awards

The Amnesty Media Awards recognise the vital role journalists play and the serious risks they face in highlighting human rights abuses around the world.

Spanning 10 categories, entries are judged by an expert panel including renowned journalists. This year’s judges include Christina Lamb (The Sunday Times), Maya Oppenheim (The Independent), Mark Austin (Sky News), Ayshah Tull (Channel 4), John Ray (ITV) and Alison Phillips (Daily Mirror).

The awards ceremony will take place at Amnesty UK’s Human Rights Action Centre in London on Thursday 9 May 2024.
