Cycling Calendar 2023

Is there a reason why the Tour of Pologne (Poland) is not included in this list?

We don’t cover the Tour de Pologne. That’s why it’s not included in our calendar.

12 Must-Watch Cycling Races in 2023

From the classics to the grand tours, it’s going to be another thrilling year of bike racing.

119th paris roubaix 2022 men's elite

Gear-obsessed editors choose every product we review. We may earn commission if you buy from a link. How we test gear.

Believe or not, we’re already over a month into the 2023 season, with racing already underway in Australia, South America, the Middle East, and Southern Europe.

But while we’re excited to see the sport’s best men and women back in action–and some of the sport’s biggest names have already started their seasons on a winning note–these races are merely the appetizer, whetting our palettes for bigger races still to come.

Here’s a rundown of the races we can’t wait to see in 2023.

Omloop Het Nieuwsblad — February 25

cycling omloop het nieuwsblad women

We’re purists, which means despite the fact that the racing season started in mid-January, we don’t consider the season to have really started until the running of the Omloop Het Nieuwsblad, the first race of the season in Belgium. With events for both men and women, the “Omloop,” as it’s affectionately called, offers everything we love about the spring Classics: rain, wind, cobblestones, and many of the short, steep “bergs” that speckle the Flemish countryside.

On the men’s side, Belgian riders and teams often lead the way: Wout van Aert (Jumbo-Visma) won last year’s race after an attack just before the Bosberg, the day’s final climb. He won’t be back to defend his title though, which leaves the door open for one of Soudal-Quick Step’s many stars to a big win on home turf for the Belgian super-team.

Strade Bianche — March 4

eroica 16th strade bianche 2022 men's elite

Taking place on the white gravel roads of Tuscany, Strade Bianche is easily one of the hardest and most beautiful races of the year. A race in which the strongest rider always wins, it makes sense that the event’s list of winners reads like a Who’s Who of the sport’s best racers.

For example, Slovenia’s Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates) won last year’s race with a solo attack 50 kilometers from the finish line in Siena, an incredibly gutsy move that only a rider like Pogačar would attempt (and pull off). And before Pog, previous editions were won by the Netherlands’ Mathieu van der Poel (2021), van Aert (2020), and France’s Julian Alaphilippe (2019). Clearly, this is a race where only the best succeed.

On the women’s side, van Vleuten is again the top favorite: she won the race in 2019 and 2020 and finished second to Belgium’s Lotte Kopecky (SD Worx) last year. And keep an eye on Italy’s Elisa Longo Borghini (Trek-Segafredo), who won the race in 2017, and Poland’s Katarzyna Niewiadoma (Canyon-SRAM Racing), a four-time podium finisher who’s still searching for the top step.

How to Watch: GCN+

Milan-Sanremo — March 18

cycling ita milan san remo

The first of cycling’s five Monuments, Milan-Sanremo (294km) is the longest one-day race on the calendar. And thanks to the fact that the outcome is almost always decided in the final 10K, the riders say it’s the easiest race to finish, but the hardest race to win.

We love Milan-Sanremo’s slow build to the finish as the riders head south from Milan toward the coast, then wind their way along the sea toward the climbs that make-up the Monument’s traditional finale—especially the Poggio, a short, punchy ascent just a few kilometers from the finish line whose treacherous descent often creates more gaps than the climb itself. Case in point: Slovenia’s Matej Mohorič (Bahrain Victorious) used a dropper post to leave the rest behind on the descent, laying it all on the line to take the biggest win of his career.

And while there’s no women’s Milan-Sanremo, the Trofeo Alfredo Binda, a major stop on the women’s WorldTour and a pillar of the former women’s World Cup series, takes the place the next day—and can be streamed live via GCN. Italy’s Elisa Balsamo (Trek-Segafredo) won last year’s race, outsprinting her compatriots Sofia Bertizzolo (UAE Team ADQ) and Soraya Paladin (Canyon-SRAM) to take the victory.

Tour of Flanders — April 2

106th ronde van vlaanderen tour des flandres 2022 men's elite

Many riders consider the Tour of Flanders (known locally as the “Ronde van Vlaanderen”) to be the hardest one-day race on the calendar. The men’s event features over 250km of the toughest terrain in the Flemish region of Belgium, with tight, technical roads, cobblestones, and short, steep climbs called “bergs.” The course is so challenging that it can take years for a rider to master the nuances of the race enough to actually contend to win it.

Last year’s men’s race went to van der Poel who shrugged-off a late-start to the season–and a stunning challenge from Pogačar–to win the Ronde for the second time in three years. Both riders are expected to return this year, alongside van Aert, who was enjoying the form of his life but was forced to skip the event after testing positive for COVID-19.

In the women’s event, look for another battle between the Dutch and the Italians with van Vleuten headlining a list of contenders that should include her compatriots, Chantal van den Broek-Blaak (SD-Worx) and Marianne Vos (Jumbo-Visma), both former winners of the event. For the Italians, Longo Borghini should lead the way. SD Worx got the better of van Vleuten last year, working over the Dutch superstar in the finale to set-up a victory for Kopecky, the Belgian champion.

Paris-Roubaix — April 8 and 9

2nd paris roubaix 2022 women's elite

The “Hell of the North.” The “Queen of the Classics.” Whatever you call it, Paris-Roubaix is probably our favorite race on the calendar. The final half of this 255km Monument includes about 55km of Northern France’s worst cobbled roads (spread over 29 “sectors”), so it’s packed with drama and always produces a worthy champion—even when it’s a dark horse. This year’s race returns its usual spot on the calendar (one week after the Tour of Flanders) after pushing back a week to accommodate last year’s French national election.

Saturday brings the third-ever women’s Paris-Roubaix (145km), which starts in Denain and follows the final 17 sectors of cobbles of Sunday’s men’s race—all the way to the finish line in the Roubaix velodrome. Both editions have been won solo: Great Britain’s Lizzy Deignan (Trek-Segafredo) won the inaugural event with a long-distance attack in wet, muddy conditions, and Long-Borghini won last year with a strong counter-attack in the final hour after the leading group reformed. Van Vleuten has never won this race, but is skipping the event to target the hillier Ardennes Classics two weeks later. In her place, the Dutch will have Vos to root for, and she would certainly love to add a Roubaix cobble to her palmares.

In last year’s men’s race, the Netherland’s Dylan van Baarle (INEOS-Grenadiers) won the first cobbled Monument in his team’s history after attacking the leading group about 20km from the finish line in Roubaix. And the Dutchman moved to Jumbo-Visma this past off-season, giving van Aert one of the strongest and most experienced teammates anyone could ask for.

La Vuelta Femenina — May 1 to 7

penyal d'ifac

For the past 8 years, the organizers of the men’s Tour of Spain have run a women’s event during the men’s grand tour. Starting as a one-day race run alongside the last stage of the men’s grand tour, the event grew to include four days of racing, but that’s hardly a grand tour, isn’t it?

Enter the new and improved La Vuelta Feminina which in addition to being expanded to seven stages has moved to its own spot on the calendar–away from the men’s event that often overshadowed it. The course is yet to be unveiled, but we know the race will begin on the Costa Blanca, which means beautiful scenery and close proximity to lots of hard climbs.

Van Vleuten has already said she’s racing–she won the last two editions–and looks to make this the first victory of what she hopes will be a hatrick of women’s grand tour wins in 2023.

Giro d’Italia — May 6 to 28

105th giro d'italia 2022 stage 20

While the Tour de France gets all the prestige, riders generally consider the Tour of Italy (the “Giro d’Italia”) to be much, much harder. This year’s race begins in the Abruzzo region and with the exception of a summit finish in Switzerland, stays entirely within Italy. The race finishes in Rome for only the fifth time in its history.

Always characterized by its mountains, the 2023 Giro offers seven mountain stages and six summit finishes, including a mountain time trial on the Giro’s penultimate day that finishes atop the Monte Lussari. As usual, the final week is a beast, with three more summit finishes before the final time trial.

This year’s race features three individual time trials, which is probably why Belgium’s Remco Evenepoel (Soudal Quick Step) has made the focal point of his season. The reigning world champion won last year’s Tour of Spain to take the first grand tour victory of his career, and as one of the sport’s best time trialists, likes what the course has to offer.

Start lists are far from finalized, but we expect Evenepoel to be challenged by Slovenia’s Primož Roglič (Jumbo-Visma) a 3-time Vuelta winner who’s tried several times but failed to win the Giro, and Great Britain’s Geraint Thomas (INEOS Grenadiers), winner of the 2018 Tour de France. All of them should have the defending champion, Australia’s Jai Hindley (BORA-hansgrohe), to contend with as well.

Giro d’Italia Donne — June 30 to July 9

33rd giro d'italia donne 2022 stage 9

In the absence of a women’s Tour de France, the Giro Donne was traditionally the most prestigious women’s stage race on the calendar. But the success of last year’s Tour de France Femmes means the Giro Donne’s organizers will need to step-up their game in order to keep up with their French rivals. Case in point: it was recently announced that beginning in 2024, RCS–who organizes the men’s Giro d’Italia–will take over the Giro Donne, which means more money and more infrastructure will be funneled toward this important women’s event.

Details have yet to emerge about this year’s course (they always arrive at the last minute), and we’re curious to see which riders attempt to tackle the Giro Rosa and the new Tour de France Femmes two weeks later. Last year we said that winning both would be a tall order, but van Vleuten proved us wrong by winning the Giro and then Tour de France Femmes a few weeks later. She’s again tackling both races in 2023.

Tour de France — July 1 to July 23

109th tour de france 2022 stage 18

The 2023 Tour de France should again be one of the highlights of the year–and this year’s edition has several tricks up its sleeve. The race begins in the Spanish Basque Country and quickly heads into the Pyrenees, where early mountain battles will begin shuffling the General Classification. Stage 9 brings a return to the Puy de Dôme, an extinct volcano that’s one of the most famous climbs in Tour de France history–and hasn’t been climbed in 35 years.

The final two weeks cover some of the toughest climbs in the Alps, including the high-altitude (and steep) Col de Loze and the race’s only time trial: a hilly ITT on Stage 16. As the race approaches Paris the riders will hit the Vosges mountains, for a tough penultimate stage featuring many of the climbs used by van Vleuten to seize control of last year’s Tour de France Femmes.

The defending champion, Denmark’s Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma) will return to defend his title, and he’ll face a stiff challenge Pogačar, the winner in 2020 and 2021. The Slovenian seemed to learn a few lessons after relinquishing the yellow jersey midway through last year’s Tour, and that could mean bad news for Vingegaard and his team.

Tour de France Femmes — July 23 to 30

cycling fra tdf2022 women stage2

After facing years of pressure from advocates and racers, the organizers of the Tour de France finally announced the return of a true women’s Tour de France. Consisting of eight stages, the race began on the final day of the men’s Tour and finished one week later. It was a resounding success.

This year’s Tour de France Femmes will follow a similar pattern: starting in Clermont-Ferrand on the last Sunday of the men’s Tour, the race covers eight stages suiting a variety of riding styles.

The first six stages offer chances for sprinters and puncheurs, which means exciting racing for viewers and fans. But the final weekend has us most excited with a summit finish on the Col du Tourmalet on Saturday and an individual time trial on Sunday.

Van Vleuten overcame a slow start to dominate last year’s race. If things go according to plan she’ll defend last year’s title, and possibly complete a historic triple by winning the Vuelta, the Giro, and the Tour all in the same season.

UCI World Championships — August 6 to 13

95th uci road world championships 2022 women elite road race

The UCI World Road Race Championships move to early-August this year, which makes the Tour de France an even more important event as it’s the best place for riders to hone their form. And the events couldn’t be taking place in a more stunning location: Glasgow, Scotland. Raced by national teams and run entirely without race radios, these are always some of the most intriguing and intense races of the season.

The hilly city circuit should favor the riders we’re used to seeing at the front of the World Championship road races: the Dutch (led by van Vleuten, the defending champion) and the Italians on the women’s side (both teams are too deep to single-out any one rider), and puncheurs like Evenepoel (the defending champion) and France’s Julian Alaphilippe (winner in 2020 and 2021) on the men’s. Each winner will spend the rest of the season and the first half of the next in the rainbow jersey awarded to the winner of each discipline.

Vuelta a España — August 26 to September 17

77th tour of spain 2022 stage 5

As the final grand tour of the season, the Tour of Spain (“Vuelta a España”) is traditionally a last chance for riders hoping to end the year on high note, earn a contract for the following season, or get themselves in shape for the fall Classics. With lots of mountains and a start list filled with motivated riders, the Vuelta always delivers some of the year’s most exciting finishes.

At this point in the season it’s tough to predict who will add the Spanish grand tour to their program, as lots of things can change between now and September. Evenepoel (the defending champion) and Roglič (winner in 2019, 2020, and 2021) will have more than enough time to target the Vuelta after competing in the Giro, but a lot can happen over the course of a season.

We also can’t wait to see what kind of hot mess Movistar brings to the race: as documented by the Netflix series “The Least Expected Day” the Spanish squad always finds a way to both animate and implode. Our hope is that they let their American up-and-comer, Matteo Jorgenson, try and challenge for a high GC finish.

Since getting hooked on pro cycling while watching Lance Armstrong win the 1993 U.S. Pro Championship in Philadelphia, longtime Bicycling contributor Whit Yost has raced on Belgian cobbles, helped build a European pro team, and piloted that team from Malaysia to Mont Ventoux as an assistant director sportif. These days, he lives with his wife and son in Pennsylvania, spending his days serving as an assistant middle school principal and his nights playing Dungeons & Dragons.

Tips for Choosing the Right Bike Tour

When selecting a bike tour, we recommend considering your experience level, the tour length, and the accommodation type you prefer.

Fitness Level and Terrain Preferences

Assessing your fitness level and deciding how challenging you want the terrain to be is vital. Are you looking for a leisurely ride along flat country roads, or are you up for a more demanding mountain route? Being honest with yourself will help ensure you don't take on too much and have an enjoyable experience.

Destination and Duration

Do you want to stay in your home country or travel abroad? Are you looking for a day trip, a week-long getaway, or an extended trip? You will also need to consider the weather and seasonality - certain countries offer better cycling conditions during different times of the year.

Guided or Self Guided?

The type of tour you choose can also make a big difference in your overall experience. Guided tours offer the advantage of having an experienced tour guide lead the way and provide helpful advice, while self-guided tours give you more freedom to explore independently.

Accommodation Type

The type of accommodation offered can also play a role in your decision. Whether you opt for a Bike & Hotel or Bike & Boat tour will change the experience significantly.

Budget Considerations

The cost of a bike tour can vary significantly depending on the length of the tour, the level of accommodation, and whether the tour is guided or self-guided. Research different trips to find one that fits your budget and expectations.

Final Thoughts

Bike tours are a great way to explore new places, get some exercise, and have a fantastic experience. With proper preparation and research, you can find the perfect bike tour for your needs and enjoy a unique journey that will be remembered for years. So get out there and start peddling!

10 dream cycling trips to take in 2023

The trips we'd love to take in 2023..

What makes a bike trip a dream trip? That’s a question with a thousand answers depending on your experience, ability, and interests. For a beginning cyclist, it might mean a first two-hour ride.

An average rider may dream of completing a first century or climbing a significant mountain pass. More advanced cyclists can contemplate a multi-day trip through the Alps or the Rockies. Adventurous types we’ve known have tackled challenges like riding to the Mount Everest Base Camp at 17,000 feet elevation or traversing the Americas from Alaska to Tierra del Fuego.

Today, there are more companies that organize bike trips than ever. Here are 10 trips we’d love to take in 2023.

Trek Travel: Crater Lake & Oregon Cascades

cycling tours 2023

This is a good choice for a first fully guided trip. Trek Travel is celebrating its 20 th anniversary, organizing trips to 14 countries and more than 20 U.S. states. After shuttling from Redmond Airport to Crater Lake National Park, this five-day tour opens with a 35-mile afternoon ride around the perimeter of what is one of the world’s deepest and most scenic bodies of water. For $3,700 per person, the package includes use of a Trek Domane SL 7 disc or a Verve+ e-bike, along with four night’s hotel accommodation, two guides, support van, most meals and two happy hours. And every day on the journey north through Oregon, there are up to three route options, the longest being 73 miles (and 6,000 feet of climbing) on the penultimate day from Sisters over McKenzie Pass to Belknap Springs and back. With stunning views of the Cascade Range, the cosmopolitan fun of Bend and staying at both rustic and boutique hotels, this has the makings of a perfect vacation. One newcomer said: “My first trip with Trek Travel and it was a trip of a lifetime!”

Pure Adventures: Vail to Aspen

cycling tours 2023

Named one of the best cycling tour companies in the 2021 USA Today Readers’ Choice Awards, Pure Adventures has almost three decades of organizing trips on four continents. Perhaps the most challenging of its domestic tours is in the Rocky Mountains, with a week of riding in terrain made famous by the Coors Classic, USA Pro Challenge and Colorado Classic stage races. The first few days include climbs to Beaver Creek and Vail Pass (which is on the 78-mile Copper Triangle with 6,000 feet of elevation gain). Day 6 also has a heavy dose of climbing out and back from Snowmass Village, including the uphill from Aspen to Maroon Lake and views of the iconic, snow-crested Maroon Bells. Cost for the trip, which includes six hotel overnights, most meals and sag support, starts at $3,850. One Canadian customer said: “I have not stopped telling my friends how great the whole trip was. We will be back!”

Backroads: Through Chile’s Ring of Fire

Established 43 years ago, Backroads operates in more than 50 countries with biking, hiking and multi-adventure trips. One of the company’s most exotic bike trips is a seven-day tour in the national parks of Chile in that country’s summer months of January and March. The rides go through a pristine landscape of snow-capped volcanoes and lava fields (part of the Pacific Ring of Fire), virgin rain forests, waterfalls and lakes. The trip starts with two nights in Puerto Varas, the “city of roses,” which his become the “it” place of Chile with views across a lake to the spectacular, 8,700-foot-high Osorno volcano. This trip will appeal to a range of cyclists, with the longest ride being 59 miles and 4,000 feet of climbing. One American client said: “We are beginner-ish bikers and managed great!” Prices for the week start at $6,500.

Garda Bike Hotel: Strade Bianche + Lake Garda

cycling tours 2023

This will be a dream trip for any competitive cyclist, with amazing highlights: riding the Gran Fondo Strade Bianche after watching the finish of the pro race in Siena the day before. A great option would be to start with three nights at the company’s four-star hotel on Lake Garda, acclimating to Italy in springtime and training for the gran fondo. Then comes a three-hour transfer to Tuscany for four nights just outside Siena. There are guided group rides daily before the gran fondo on Sunday, March 5, 2023. The long course of 142.5 kilometers features 54.7 kilometers of the iconic white roads, while the 86.8 kilometer alternative incudes “only” 21.6 kilometers of strade bianche . Price depends on choosing the four-day or seven-day package, but all options include the rental of a Pinarello Grevil bike. And the food and wines of Tuscany are out of this world. “The best bike trip I’ve ever been on,” one client said. “An experience for a lifetime,” said another.

Grand Tours Project: Riding Week 3 of the 2023 Giro

As an Official Tour Operator of the Giro d’Italia, the Grand Tours Project has unprecedent access to the race routes and the stage finishes. Depending on your cycling ability (and strength!), this well-established company offers weeklong trips that include riding every kilometer of each Giro stage or a more rider-friendly version in which you do up to 100 kilometers a day. The final week of the 2023 Giro, May 22–29, is the most spectacular (and will be the most decisive), featuring the epic climbs of Monte Bondone, the Tre Cime di Lavaredo and the Monte Lussari time trial. A high-speed train will take participants to the final stage in Rome, where they will ride two laps of the day’s race circuit before having their photos taken on the winners’ podium. The week’s package starts at just under $5,000. A rider who experienced a similar Week 3 trip in 2022, said this after one challenging day through the Dolomites: “Soaked, tired and satisfied, we arrive at the finish and gratefully jump into our support car. With the heating and our favorite Van Morrison album on, we drive to our next hotel, realizing we might just have lived our most epic day on the bike…. Viva Il Giro!”

It’s organized by Duvine Cycling + Adventure, which was founded 26 years ago and operates in more than 20 countries. This is one of its most challenging and memorable trips, with prices from $5,095 for seven hotel nights, most meals and local wines included, along with use of a Cannondale Synapse Carbon Disc Ultegra Di2 bike. There’s also a climb on smooth gravel to the remote Gurnigel Pass and an ascent to the challenging, but little-known Mittelberg where you hear “just the sound of clanging cowbells.” One cyclist who experienced a DuVine tour in the Alps said: “It was tough (in a good way)…best experience of my life.”

This California-based company chose to call itself InGamba (Italian slang for “in the know”) because it wanted to create trips that were designed to not only discover magnificent cycling in places all over the world but also get into the fabric of the countries, embracing the food, wine and culture as presented by locals. InGamba founder  João Correia is a former Portuguese pro racer, so you can be sure that the bike trip from the north of Portugal to the very south along the Estrada Nacional 2 is one of the best, passing through regions little known by traditional tourists. The cost of the September 2023 tour is high at $8,450 but it includes all lodging, food and beverages, use of a Pinarello Dogma bike, custom Castelli clothing, and daily post-ride massage and bike wash. The distance over six days is 754 kilometers; the longest day is 163 kilometers and total climbing is over 10,000 meters (almost 33,000 feet). One client said: “You will immerse into the week so perfectly that you will forget all the pressures of life…and come out the other end refreshed.”

Glacier National Park

The Glacier National Park bike tour was a standout choice for its breathtaking natural beauty and adventurous routes. Guests explored one of Mother Nature’s most prized possessions in northwest Montana, a unique blend of wildlife, snow-capped peaks, and inspiring landscapes. A road in Asheville North Carolina

North Carolina

The Asheville to Brevard bike tour captivated many with its stunning rides through the Blue Ridge Parkway and the Southern Appalachians. The route through the highest peaks east of the Mississippi provided riders with breathtaking views. Asheville’s reputation as one of America’s best small cities for food and drink, combined with its vibrant art, brewery, and shopping scenes, made it a delightful starting point. The opportunity to ride fantastic routes and explore the charming downtown areas of Asheville and Brevard made this tour a top choice for those seeking a blend of physical challenge and cultural immersion.

The Vermont bike tour was highly popular for its picturesque journey through the Champlain Valley and Green Mountains. Guests enjoyed scenic rides around Lake Champlain, past hillside farms, and across covered bridges. The tour celebrated Vermont’s rich artisan food scene, allowing riders to sample local specialties like maple syrup and Vermont cheddar. Riding the causeway across Lake Champlain offered expansive views, creating a memorable experience. The opportunity to experience true farm-to-table dining throughout the trip made this tour a top choice for those who appreciate natural beauty and culinary delights.

From the rolling vineyards of California Wine Country to the rugged terrain of Glacier National Park and the pastoral beauty of Vermont, each tour offered a unique window into the heart of North America’s natural wonders. As we look back on a year of adventure and forward to new explorations, we’re reminded of the endless possibilities that await on the open road!

5 epic bike trips - your best cycling adventures for 2023 and beyond.

There are easy bike rides and there are challenging bike rides. The challenging ones tend to go ... [+] uphill, as on this ride across all of Italy with luxury tour operator DuVine.

Cycling trips are one of my all-time favorite types of vacations, just a great way to explore beautiful destinations around the world in a deep dive while getting exercise, fresh air, and being able to indulge in guilt-free eating and drinking along the way ( Check out this great new bike trip on Kentucky’s Bourbon Trail I just wrote about here at Forbes )

These trips are hotter than ever, thanks to the explosion in interest in cycling, fitness, and outdoor activities driven by the pandemic. At the same time, the new generation of home cycling fitness, led by platforms like Strava, Peloton, iFit and Zwift, have allowed consumers to virtually “ride” famous race routes, climbs, roads, trails and tours around the world, whetting their appetites for the real thing.

But as much as I love luxury bike trips with white glove support, Michelin-starred meals, frequent gelato breaks and 4 and 5-Star accommodations, these trips are not for everyone. Many of the more avid cyclists I know find the popular offerings (Tuscany, Burgundy, Napa Valley, Vermont, etc.) run by the best outfitters too tame. If you do not ride a lot, you may well find an average of 25-30 miles daily a lot of work, but for a serious cyclist, that’s just a casual hour and a half out of a full day. In addition, the flow of these trips is generally designed for a leisurely pace, and on the last group trip I did, when I rode hard, I found myself ahead of the support van, ahead of most of the aid stations, and basically turned it into a unsupported ride by riding too fast. On another group trip to Italy one of the guides asked my wife and I to stop for an espresso break at a cafe because we were going to get to lunch too early.

Most of the many cycling trips I have been on around the world feature multiple daily route choices, but these typically run in a fairly tight range, from as little as 12 to as many as 45 miles, and I think of all the trips I’ve done with luxury outfitters, the longest single day option - by a substantial margin - has been a metric century, 62-miles. That’s a long ride for many, but for some cyclists it’s just another ride.

So, to be clear, most people looking for a fun, active travel vacation can pick almost any bike trip run by a top company and have an absolute blast. But if you are more experienced, more energetic and more into cycling itself, you may find you need a little bigger challenge. Fortunately, in the world of travel there is something for everyone, and these following trips are for the second kind of cyclist.

Best Travel Insurance Companies

Best covid-19 travel insurance plans.

If you sign up for DuVine's Alps Journey across France, you can expect a lot of time in the ... [+] mountains.

DuVine Journey Tours: While most of the best luxury tour operators skew lower impact, Boston-based DuVine is a notable exception, with a catalog of trips for every ability, from first timer to enthusiast. As founder Andy Levine told me, “I didn’t see options out there for the cyclist who wants to ‘suffer in comfort,’ so to speak, so these point-to-point excursions offer our strongest travelers the opportunity to push their limits and conquer these lifelong dreams - legendary routes, cols, and summits - while still benefitting from DuVine’s pro support and service hallmarks. Our guests know that a DuVine tour is set apart by choice hotels, the best local guides in the industry, impeccable service, and an obsession with food and wine. We design most of our trips to appeal to all levels of cyclists, because we believe everyone should experience the world by bike. But for those who are more serious about their kms and elevation gain, we created our Journey Tours.”

I went on an absolutely amazing cycling trip via sailboat to unexplored Greek and Turkish islands with DuVine last year, a trip no other U.S. operator offers, and wrote about what made it so great here for Forbes . Everything from food to guides to gear to routes chosen were first class, it was wonderful, and I loved it. How good is DuVine? Well in 2022, Travel + Leisure Magazine rated them the Number One Best Tour operator in the world - and not just for active travel. As T+L explained, “A tour with DuVine goes far beyond just riding a bike - it's a way to really see the character of a destination. Case in point: even those who say they're not necessarily cycling fans have been converted… Its ‘top-notch biking equipment’ and ‘challenging but doable itineraries’ didn’t hurt either.”

The company’s “Journey” trips crank things up a notch in terms of challenge while still keeping the luxury aesthetic and Levine’s famous focus on wine and food. You’ll need those calories to recharge on these trips. For example, the Alps Journey takes you by bike from Lake Geneva to the Mediterranean Coast, down the spine of the Alps, and the description pulls no punches: “Conquer France’s greatest, hardest, and most famous climbs, including the Alpe d’Huez, Col du Galibier, Col d’Izoard, and Col de la Bonette.” The Alps are big mountains and these legends from the Tour du France are big, epic climbs. The trip is rated Level 4 on DuVine’s 1-4 scale, which translates to 3000-6500 feet of climbing and 50-60 miles daily, though many Journey days are even harder. Level 4 is “not recommended” for recreational cyclists, and “not recommended without serious training” for intermediate cyclists. This trip covers 369 miles in 6 days, the longest being 71, all with big climbs.

There are four other Journey Tours , all rated Level 4, including the Dolomites Journey, Pyrenees Journey, Switzerland Journey and the most enticing of all, the Italian Coast-to-Coast Journey . As the name suggests this ride traverses the breadth of Italy from the Adriatic to the Mediterranean, across the Apennine mountains and then through hilly Umbria and Tuscany. There are two 70-plus mile days, including 75 with 5500’ of climbing. That’s worth a lot of gelato!

Cyclists retracing Hannibal's journey across the Alps may suffer in the saddle, but not off the ... [+] bike, on this epic trip with Ride & Seek.

Ride & Seek Hannibal Across The Alps: Ride & Seek is a one of a kind bike tour operator that takes a one of a kind approach, with a dozen historical “Epics” spanning 30 countries (in case you were not counting that means each trip averages two and a half countries). These are long, involved rides based on historical events, and in addition to iron lungs, strong legs and a lot of willpower, you might also need a sabbatical.

The company’s most famous signature is the Hannibal Tour , which retraces the steps of the famous elephant equipped conqueror from Barcelona to Rome - across part of Spain, all of France and good chunk of the length of Italy in “just” 32 days. But Hannibal rode elephants and didn’t have to pedal up and over the Alps - you will. The lodging is less opulent than companies like DuVine, but still a big step above roughing it, with a carefully selected slate of Italian agriturismos, manoirs in France and historic paradors in Spain. There are no breaks, you ride all 32 days, the longest being 87 miles. The only easy day is the first, a 10-mile warm up, immediately followed by the hardest day, 86 miles climbing 6129 feet. The short days are in the 40s and there are four 80-plus rides. This is the company’s classic, but they rotate and offer the big tours every few years. The next Hannibal has not yet been scheduled. However, in the same vein and about the same length, they just put “ Marco Polo Biking Tour From Italy to Athens ,” on for 2024.

The Conquest of the Moors with Ride & Seek is challenging, but the payoff is world class attractions ... [+] like Granada's Alhambra Palace.

Ride & Seek Conquest of the Moors and Other Epics: This one is coming up fast, but there’s still room for the April/May 2023 Conquest of the Moors departure. Explore the history of the Moors as you cycle first in Morocco from Fes to Tangiers. Then cross the Mediterranean to the Iberian Peninsula and ride from Portugal to the old capital of Cordoba, Spain. This tour focuses on insight into the legacy left by 700 years of Muslim rule. It lasts 24 days and is a bit easier, with just seven days in the 60s and 70s mileage realm, some shorter days, and even a rare rest day in Jerez, where you can enjoy the famous local specialty, Sherry.

All of the Epics are broken into at least two stages, which can be booked individually, so some riders (maybe with less vacation time) come back in different years to complete them. Owner Dylan Reynolds told me that, “We have had many riders come back to ride individual stages over the years. All of our Epics are set up to allow riders to ride the whole route or choose stages within it. I would say 50% of riders generally choose to do the whole Epic with the rest doing individual stages. Interestingly some tours attract more riders wanting to do the whole thing - Napoleon comes to mind - whereas our 3 Islands tour (Corsica, Sardinia, Sicily) works well for people wanting to do individual islands.”

The white roads of Tuscany crisscross the famous landscape of the Val d'Orcia, a UNESCO World ... [+] Heritage site.

Tourissimo Strade Bianche: For the past few years “gravel grinding,” or riding heavier duty road bikes with slightly beefier tires on dirt roads, has been the fastest growing category of cycling, falling somewhere between traditional road cycling and mountain biking, but closer to road. The biggest appeal is the marked lack of automotive traffic and getting into more escapist settings. It’s also physically harder, thanks to greatly increased rolling resistance versus pavement on dirt, potholes and loose gravel, with heavier bikes. In many popular gravel riding spots, such as Vermont, where I live, it’s also very hilly. That’s certainly the case in Tuscany, home to the most famous gravel riding in the world, the strade bianche, or “white roads” that crisscross the agricultural region. They are named for their distinctive white gravel, and the tradition of riding these roads existed for decades before anyone thought to market gravel grinding, and long before it was popularized in the most famous race of its kind, also the Strade Bianche, launched in 2007. This local spectacle is part of the UCI World Tour, pro cycling’s highest level, which includes the three grand Tours, Tour de France, Giro d’Italia and Vuelta a Espana.

Many, many miles of these white gravel roads wind through Tuscany’s countryside, and despite Tuscany long being arguably the single most desirable cycling vacation destination on earth, they have largely gone unnoticed by tourists and cyclists. But not by Beppe Salerno, an avid road and mountain cyclist and co-founder and co-owner of Italy and Boston-based Tourissimo , a hiking and cycling active travel tour operator specializing in all things Italy, armed to the teeth with insider knowledge and contacts (the company is also a passionate sponsor of the acclaimed PBS show Dream of Italy ). Interestingly, in the travel industry, Tourissimo is best known for its culinary-focused cycling trips led by famous guest chefs, which I have written about here at Forbes before.

Salerno has traveled the white roads for many years, and has included his favorites in a weeklong tour that is as beautiful as it is challenging. It is hard to believe there are still so many unknown and hidden corners of this wildly popular tourist destination, but there are, and these are literally the roads less traveled - and more graveled - but still fully supported in high style. It begins in the Chianti region and then traverses the Val d’Orcia, a rich green valley between Sienna and Grosseto so beautiful and well preserved with medieval farmhouses that it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It finally ends in Tuscany’s less visited coastal Maremma region, at the Tyrrhenian Sea.

Travelers tackling the challenge and beauty of Tuscany's white gravel roads with tour operator ... [+] Tourissimo.

The 7-day ride averages 52 miles daily but that’s thrown off by the first day, a 23-mile warm up, leaving a couple of 60-plus mile gravel rides, all with considerable climbing, over 5000 feet daily. But it’s beautiful, and the food is great. You hit two world-class wine regions, Chianti and Montalcino-Brunello, while visiting Siena, Pienza, Montalcino, and Gaiole in Chianti, all fairy tale towns, plus less well known Maremma villages such as Sorano, Capalbio and Pitigliano. There are stops at wineries, hot springs, and all meals (breakfast, lunches and dinners), tours, bikes (with GPS) guides, shuttle van and lodging are included, with accommodations in charming family-owned local hotels. It’s a bargain for this kind of high-end bike trip at $3,995. There are two 2023 departures , May and September.

Adventure Cycling Association Southern & Northern Tiers USA: Many cyclists dream of a transcontinental ride across this great nation, and the Adventure Cycling Association offers two van supported options, the West to East Southern Tier , from San Diego to St. Augustine, Florida or the East to West Northern Tier from Bar Harbor, Maine to Anacortes, Washington. The ACA is an advocacy organization whose mission is to inspire, empower and connect people to travel by bicycle, and to this end they are affordable, welcoming, inclusive and offer value over luxury.

For a fun bike vacation, the ACA does offer traditional fully supported and Inn to Inn trips for those who are less self-sufficient, but these tend to be “normal” 5–7-day rides. At the other extreme they have a lot of self-supported rides, where you carry everything and go solo. The highest level of comfort they combine with longer more challenging rides is the category of “Van Supported,” which means there is a van, lead guides, mechanical assistance, luggage transport and four-wheeled side trips, but you are still camping and cooking. The very reasonable prices do include all meals - in the form of ingredients for shared group cooking responsibilities, and all accommodations - in the form of public campgrounds. There are many big van supported trips including these coast-to coasters, and while the amenities may be a little rough around the edges, the prices cannot be beat: the 59-day Southern tier is $7,299 with food, a place to sleep nightly and van support, less than some luxury companies get for a week. These are what the ACA calls Level 5 Difficulty, “reserved for our most challenging tours (>30 days) with big mileages and mountainous terrain.”

Find Your Grand Adventure with a 2024 Guided Tour

2024 guided tours are filling up. find your adventure today.

With an Adventure Cycling Guided Tour, you can count on five things:

  • Curated experiences traversing the histories, cultures, and landscapes of the U.S.
  • A tour type to fit your travel style
  • Small groups of 10-15 participants, except for our larger Fully Supported Events
  • A fully planned trip, without the worry of routing, navigation, or reservations, from an experienced organization
  • Warm fuzzies knowing your Guided Tour purchase supports a nonprofit and its mission, not a for-profit company

We’re excited to hit the road with you!

Our goal is to facilitate a life-changing journey with a Guided Tour that fits your needs. Our Guided Tours provide a range of experiences: long weekend to epic, pavement to dirt, historically focused to earning the scenic vistas. They also come in a variety of lengths and difficulties as well as different levels of support and price points. We offer everything from self-sufficient nights under the stars to fully catered experiences and inn-to-inn options.

Every tour comes with knowledgeable Tour Leaders, routing, navigation, and reservations. All you have to do is participate! Some tours provide opportunities to get to know your fellow riders better, such as group-made meals and grocery shopping, while other types of tours are less interactive. Participation in these small group activities on some tour types is all part of the Adventure Cycling experience.

“Without a doubt, the best part of the tour was the friendships we made. We came from all levels of experience. Everyone was supportive. Every single day, no matter what the difficulty of the day, we laughed.” – Sam, Tour Participant

Types of Tours

We have a variety of tour formats that suit different styles of touring. All come in different lengths and levels of difficulty, which we call Adventure Levels, ranging from Level 1 to Level 5. Generally, our tours have between 10 and 15 participants, with the exception being our larger Fully Supported Events.

Self-Contained This type of touring is all pedal power and no vehicular support. All shared gear is carried by the group, and cooking responsibilities rotate among its members. A majority of nights are spent outdoors under the stars. An indoor stay or restaurant may be sprinkled in just when you need it the most.

Inn-to-Inn This is the type of tour for those of us who prefer the comforts of a cozy bed. As the name suggests, each night is spent indoors. Breakfasts and dinners are enjoyed in restaurants. Although there is no vehicle support, you’ll only need to carry the minimal gear of your clothes, toiletries, basic repair items, water, and a bag lunch for the day.

Van-Supported If you prefer touring without the load of a full set of panniers, but you still love camping, we have a van and trailer to haul your gear. Just worry about pedaling. Carry nothing more than water/lunch/snacks and maybe some rain gear if the weather’s dodgy. You’ll still have fun with your partner rotating on camp cooking duty. But not to worry, on certain tours, there are occasional restaurant meals and indoor stays.

Fully Supported and Family Adventure  Events The top level of support! Meals are catered. Luggage is hauled. Starry night camping for those into tents and motel options for those who aren’t. Water and snack stops along the route. Just enjoy the riding, the scenery, and the people to your front and back. These tours are larger in size (20–50 participants) and staffed by several tour leaders all looking out for you.

Education Not sure you’re ready to take the leap into full-on independent touring? Our Intro to Road and Intro to Gravel Touring & Bikepacking courses help you break down the basics. There’s some in-person classroom work before setting out as a group on a short self contained tour. We also offer Leadership Training Courses for those experienced in bike touring but want to start leading their own groups.

“This was my first organized multiday trip. I was traveling solo and I had a wonderful time. I could set my own pace and never felt rushed. The food was fantastic and there was lots of it! I can’t say enough good things about the leaders. I will definitely sign up for another one.” – Kelly, Tour Participant

Doing Good with Every Pedal Stroke

Our programs focus on making bicycle travel more accessible to more people through mapping short and long routes, hosting educational resources and events, and creating an open, supportive community for all riders.

All of our tours are listed below. If you have any questions, give us a call or reach out through our online chat. We’re here for you — because Your Adventure Awaits!

Testimonials

“ I’ve done a number of tours with Adventure Cycling and loved them all, but this was the best group I’ve been with. The people on this trip were just plain fun. I loved everywhere we got to see.”  — Jeff, Tour Participant “ I love the little towns, particularly Patagonia. Tombstone was interesting but did not get to see much of it. Bisbee is a fascinating and historic community. The roads were generally fine and not too busy. The terrain was sufficiently challenging, but not intimidating for this early season rider who was not in top shape.”  — Stephanie, Tour Participant

Moscow Sky Lights Up With Strange Glow After Explosion at Electrical Substation: Reports

N ew footage has emerged showing bright flashes lighting up the night sky in southern Moscow during the early morning hours of November 22.

Knewz.com has learned that there was an explosion at an electrical substation on the outskirts of Russia's capital city followed by an alleged power outage in "several" homes.

Video snippets, shared on Russian news channels like ASTRA , captured a series of flashes that caused the sky to change color. Smoke could also be seen rising from a building.

Corroborating the video, several Russian Telegram accounts reported an explosion near the south of Moscow and a subsequent fire at the Lyublino electrical substation, southeast of central Moscow, per Newsweek .

The local authorities from the area have since confirmed that an explosion occurred in the village of Molokovo, but they reassured the public that all vital facilities were operating as normal.

Russian outlet MSK1.ru reported the blaze at the substation and noted “several” power outages.

The town of Lytkarino, located to the southeast of Moscow, was one of the affected areas, as reported by the independent outlet, Meduza .

Additional power failures were reported in the southern Domodedovo section of the city. However, electricity was later restored to these areas.

One local resident speculated that a drone may have been responsible for the explosion, but additional sources are yet to support this theory.

Newsweek reported that messages on the ASTRA Telegram account run by independent Russian journalists showed residents near the substation panicking. One concerned Russian called it a "nightmare."

The incident follows an attack by Russia on a power station in southwestern Ukraine that left 2,000 people without electricity .

Knewz.com reported previously:

“ Russian forces launched a total of 38 Iranian-made Shahed-136/131 drones during the later hours of November 17 and 18.

The Ukrainian Air Force Command reported that 29 of these drones were shot down [...].

One civilian was injured as a result of the attack that targeted energy infrastructure in the southwestern Odesa Oblast.”

The assault came after repeated warnings by Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky that Russia would try to cripple its power grid as winter approaches.

Ukraine's leader warned that if Russia resorted to attacking its power utilities, it would respond in kind.

Ukraine has conducted numerous long-range aerial drone strikes on Moscow since May 2023.

Most recently on November 20, it was reported that one such incursion was intercepted close to the city, per Kyiv Post .

Moscow’s Mayor Sergei Sobyanin confirmed this and elaborated that the region's air defense systems intercepted the unmanned craft over the city of Elektrostal to the east of Moscow, as well as another over the Bogorodsky district, northeast of central Moscow.

The details of the recently surfaced video footage have yet to be independently verified.
