Seabourn Spa & Wellness: luxury and relax on the sea

Seabourn Cruise Line , the ultra-luxury cruise experience, has raised the standards of well-being, pampering and relaxation with their updated Spa & Wellness area on board new ships under construction.

The Spa & Wellness area was designed by Adam. D Tihany and will have an area entirely dedicated to it located on deck 7. It will offer endless opportunities for guests to improve their physical and spiritual wellbeing through the Mindful Living program.

“ Spa & Wellness will certainly be an extraordinary space on our ships, for our guests… for them to be enveloped by feelings of wellbeing, with a bit of adventure, towards the marvels of the world,” said Josh Leibowitz, the president of Seabourn . “In the last year, wellbeing has become fundamental to many people’s lifestyles. For this reason, our highly-qualified staff will be dedicated to a series of mind-body programs and to reinvigorating treatments developed in collaboration with Dr. Weil to guarantee travelers the possibility to relax, reconnect and recharge during their time on board.”

The Spa at Seabourn (Odyssey)

As conceived by Tihany, the creator of the interior design of the ships, Spa & Wellness will be elegant, serene and inviting all at the same time. Its 3,700 square meters of floor space are conceived as a contemporary “floating forest” with details including an artistic mural inspired by trees, a palette of light wood and bronze materials and other wooden elements, to introduce guests in the reception area. The striking natural stone floor reproduces the muted sage and orange colors found throughout the spa, while the branches of the “floating forest” spread like delicate fingers into four soothing treatment rooms, each equipped with neutral wall coverings and furnishings with light wood and hints of bronze.

Tihany’s design touches continue in the yoga and fitness area of the spa, both characterized by a wall of windows (floor-to-ceiling), to allows guests to enjoy the breathtaking views during sailing. The sauna of the wellness center will also have floor-to-ceiling windows, a new design experience for Seabourn Cruise Line .

The onboard Spa & Wellness experience will be connected to the popular Mindful Living  program developed by Dr. Andrew Weil and currently available on the entire Seabourn fleet . Led by a specially trained Mindful Living coach, the program will include a holistic approach to mind-body wellness, offering free yoga and guided meditation sessions, as well as enlightening seminars on topics ranging from integrative medicine to nutrition, pain management to creative aging, and more.

Skilled massage therapists will offer face and body massages, as well as detox, cleansing, and wrap treatments. The fitness center, within the spa, will be equipped with a range of cardio-fitness equipment, with a Fitness Director on hand to offer accurate assessments and to instruct guests in various regimens. There will also be a real salon with hairstyling, facials, manicures and pedicures available for women and men.

The launch of the Seabourn Venture is planned for December 2021, with a second twin ship being launched sometime in 2022. The Seabourn Venture will do a series of 10-14 day winter cruises in Norway during its inaugural season between December 2021 and April 2022.

Both ships will be designed and built with different environments to meet PC6 Polar Class standards and will include a range of modern hardware and technology that will enhance the overall capabilities of the ships. An exciting new offering will be two custom built submarines, carried aboard, which will provide an unforgettable view of the world beneath the ocean’s surface. The ships will also be designed to carry expedition kayaks and 24 Zodiacs that can accommodate all guests on board at the same time, which will allow for a truly immersive experience.

Both expedition ships will be equipped with a crew that will include excellent, well-seasoned expedition teams, made up of highly respected wildlife experts, scientists, historians and naturalists. These established experts are also part of the Seabourn Conversations program, providing insights into the history, ecology and culture of the places visited. Each ship will feature 132 luxurious ocean view suites with furnished verandas.

In the coming months we will bring you more details about the common areas and suites. Don’t miss out on all the updates, information and Reviews of Seabourn Cruise Line on Cruising Journal , with photos, opinions, advice and cruise offers.

WHY IT RATES: For travel agents and advisors working with clients focus on the health of their body and mind, the voyages offered by Seabourn are the perfect vacation.—Donald Wood, Breaking News Senior Writer.

Based on the success of its 2018 Wellness Voyages Seabourn, the world’s finest ultra-luxury travel experience, is setting its sights on mindful, healthy living in the year ahead by announcing two content rich Wellness Cruises bound for Arabia and the South Pacific.

Inspired by the rising interest in wellness that is transforming travel and lifestyles around the globe, each wellness cruise is being fashioned with input from celebrated physician, best-selling author and Seabourn partner Dr. Andrew Weil, whose exclusive mindful living program, Spa & Wellness with Dr. Andrew Weil is a popular offering on every vessel and every voyage in the Seabourn fleet.

With renowned Seabourn service, diverse itineraries and culturally rich destinations as a backdrop, the Wellness Cruises will be highly informative, enjoyable, and unforgettable. These specific itineraries will include lectures, discussions, classes, and demonstrations led by Dr. Weil and an additional four experts in Integrative Medicine and packed with information on how guests can enrich their lives for better mental and physical health.

“Wellness is a growing phenomenon – and rightly so – as people around the world seek to live better, healthier, and more mindfully for the benefit of their overall wellbeing,” noted Richard Meadows, president of Seabourn. “We have had great success with Spa & Wellness with Dr. Andrew Weil on Seabourn voyages around the world, and we’re excited to follow up our past two wellness cruises with these new opportunities to learn from a group of highly regarded experts.”

The Ancient Path to Wellness

The next Seabourn Wellness Cruise will launch with Route to Ancient Wellness aboard Seabourn Ovation, scheduled November 13-December 2, 2019. Bound from Piraeus (Athens), Greece to Dubai, United Arab Emirates, the cruise will follow ancient trading routes in the Mediterranean to Agios Nikolaos, Crete, Greece; and Haifa (Tel Aviv) and Ashdod (Jerusalem), Israel; before threading the Suez Canal to the Red Sea and Aqaba (For Petra), Jordan. It will then turn east around the Arabian Peninsular en route to Muscat, Oman; Ras Al Khaimah and Sir Bani Yas Island, United Arab Emirates; and Doha, Qatar. Along the way, the program will offer a number of workshops, lectures, discussions and Mindful Living shore excursions to guide guests who want to lead a more mindful and healthier lifestyle. Scheduled speakers include:

—Andrew Weil, MD, a world-renowned leader and pioneer in the field of integrative medicine, a healing oriented approach to health care that encompasses body, mind, and spirit. Combining a Harvard education and a lifetime of practicing natural and preventive medicine, Dr. Weil is the founder and director of the Arizona Center for Integrative Medicine at the University of Arizona, where he also holds the Lovell-Jones endowed chair in integrative rheumatology and is clinical professor of medicine and professor of public health. The Center is the leading effort in the world to develop a comprehensive curriculum in integrative medicine.

—Ann Marie Chiasson, MD, MPH, the Interim Director of the Fellowship in Integrative Medicine at the Arizona Center for Integrative Medicine in Tucson. Board certified in Family Medicine, Integrative Medicine and Hospice and Palliative Care, Chiasson has a deep interest in traditional energy healing paradigms and has studied with traditional healers from Mexico and Africa. Among her books is Self Healing with Energy Medicine, co-authored with Dr. Andrew Weil.

—Steven Gurgevich, PhD, Clinical Assistant Professor at the Arizona Center for Integrative Medicine and Director of the Mind-Body Clinic. He is passionate about Mind-Body Medicine and the Mind-Body-Spirit connection. A guitar player as well as an author, he enjoys studying how the brain, mind and spirit affect our quality of health and life, as well as looking into near-death experiences and afterlife. Among his books is Heal Yourself with Medical Hypnosis co-authored with Dr. Andrew Weil.

—Russell Greenfield, MD, Clinical Professor of Medicine at UNC-Chapel Hill School of Medicine, and author of over 25 published academic works. He was one of the first four graduates of the Integrative Medicine program at the University of Arizona College of Medicine. He is passionate about transforming our system of healthcare into one that emphasizes health and healing, not simply disease management.

—Daphne Miller, MD, a practicing family physician, clinical professor, research scientist and Founder of the Health from the Soil Up Initiative. She has worked for the past 20 years exploring the connections between our ecosystem and our personal health. She is the author of The Jungle Effect: The Science and Wisdom of Traditional Diets; and Farmacology: Total Health from the Ground Up; and is a regular health and wellness contributor to the Washington Post.

Wellness in the South Pacific

Seabourn’s 2020 Wellness Cruise will be the Wellness in the South Pacific aboard Seabourn Encore, scheduled February 21-March 8, 2020. Sailing from the “City of Sails,” Auckland, New Zealand, the cruise will survey each of the country’s islands with destinations including Taurqanga (Rotorua), Picton, Wellington, Akaroa (Christchurch), Port Chalmers (Dunedin), Oban (Halfmoon Bay), a cruise around Fiordland National Park, and Milford Sound. Then it’s across the sea to Australia with Melbourne, Phillip Island in Victoria, Eden in New South Wales, and finally Sydney. The sailing will also feature the Ventures by Seabourn program of optional, for-charge expedition excursions. Along the way, guests will be able to listen and learn from wellness experts, in addition to Dr. Andrew Weil (MD), including:

—Victoria Maizes, MD, Executive Director of the Arizona Center for Integrative Medicine and Professor of Medicine, Family Medicine and Public Health at the University of Arizona. Internationally recognized, she has worked with Dr. Weil for more than 20 years to create and implement educational programs that reach thousands of health professionals. A highly sought-after speaker, she is editor of the Oxford University textbook Integrative Women’s Health and author of Be Fruitful: The Essential Guide to Maximizing Fertility and Giving Birth to a Healthy Child.

—Kenneth Pelletier, PhD, MD, Clinical Professor of Medicine at the University of California School of Medicine in San Francisco, Clinical Professor of Medicine at the University of Arizona, and a medical and business consultant to government and corporations. He has authored 13 major books since the late 1970s, most recently Change Your Genes – Change Your Life: The Hope and Hype of Genetics. Among his most interesting projects are advanced studies of adept meditators who controlled bleeding, pain and infections.

—Julia Rucklidge, PhD professor of Clinical Psychology at the University of Canterbury and Director of the Mental Health and Nutrition Research Lab. Originally from Toronto, her interests in nutrition and mental illness grew out of research showing poor outcomes for individuals with significant psychiatric illness despite receiving conventional treatments. She has more than 100 peer-reviewed publications to her name, and her 2014 TEDx talk has been viewed more than a million times.

—Karen Koffler, MD, started her medical career working in emergency rooms in inner cities and on Indian reservations, where she was often the only physician for hundreds of miles. A chance meeting led her to be admitted into the first class of physicians in the U.S. trained in integrative medicine by Dr. Weil at the University of Arizona. She has trained in acupuncture, mindfulness-based stress reduction, and the “recode program” to prevent and reverse dementia.

More details about onboard programming and Mindful Living tours will be announced in the coming months.

Wellness-minded travelers have an opportunity to benefit from Dr. Weil’s integrative approach to medicine and health at Spa & Wellness with Dr. Andrew Weil, available on board every Seabourn cruise. Created via partnership with Seabourn and OneWorldSpa, the program is led by an onboard Mindful Living Coach, a certified yoga and meditation practitioner whose role is to inspire and educate guests throughout the voyage.

Central to the program is daily practice of meditation and yoga, offered complimentary. Guests can experience Mindful Meditation, which introduces positive affirmations and mantras they can reflect on throughout the day. Yoga classes are varied with choices that focus on various physical issues, such as yoga to heal back and joint pain, headaches and body alignment, as well as to enhance creativity, mental focus and happiness. The wellness program also offers complimentary Mind and Body seminars to educate on philosophies and practices aligned with the program’s mission. Individualized one-on-one wellness sessions on select topics will also be available for a fee.

Seabourn Encore cruise ship facts

  • 2017 launched
  • Not yet refurbished

Seabourn Encore is an ultra-luxury cruise ship with room for 600 guests. There are spacious suites as well as outstanding restaurants and a thrilling onboard nightlife.

  • Seabourn Encore conclusion

Seabourn Encore is sophisticated, gastronomic, exciting and playful. Indeed, it is a delight from the moment you step on board. This ultra-luxury cruise ship has a chic decor as well as outstanding dining venues and thrilling entertainment options. What’s more, every guest stays in a designer suite.

  • Ultra-luxury suites.
  • Free wine, champagne and spirits.
  • World-class dining.
  • Caviar on demand.
  • The Club with its strange bar.
  • Can seem crowded on sea days.
  • Faux-teak verandas.

The Seabourn Encore deck plan is easy to get around. There are a total of 9 passenger decks, the highest of which is deck 12.

  • Reception : Deck 7
  • Accommodation : Decks 5 to 11
  • Main dining room : Deck 4
  • Theatre : Deck 6
  • Observation lounge : Deck 11

Built in Italy and officially launched in Singapore in 2017, Seabourn Encore is the first in a new class of luxury cruise liners. Indeed, she is known as an Encore-class cruise ship.

Seabourn Encore is bigger, measuring 207 m. / 690 ft. in length. There is space for 600 guests which is 31% more than Seabourn Odyssey, Quest or Sojourn. Guests stay in all-suite accommodation which is mostly positioned midship and forward.

A larger ship means more space. However, it also means service can slip. I noted that service levels had slipped slightly during my review voyage. Perhaps this was because of the increased number of guests on board, or the fact that the cruise ship was still new.

The Seabourn Square serves coffee, tea and light snacks on Seabourn Encore.

In spite of that there is a lot to love about this luxury cruise ship, as my Seabourn Encore review explains. The famed hotel and restaurant designer Adam D. Tihany created her interiors. Gentle curves and dark timbers evoke the charm of the great ocean liners. There are also splashes of navy blue and chrome highlights. It really is quite beautiful.

There are a range of accommodation types. The most popular is the spacious Veranda Suite (categories V1 to V6) , however there are larger Penthouses as well as palatial apartment-style suites. The best suite onboard is known as the Grand Wintergarden Suite. It has two bedrooms, a dining room for six, a glass-enclosed solarium with tub and day bed, as well as a bathroom with a huge whirlpool bathtub.

Seabourn Encore also has five excellent restaurants to choose from, including one speciality venue by Michelin-starred chef Thomas Keller. There are also two glamorous indoor lounges as well as two casual poolside bars.

Keeping fit is easy on this luxury cruise ship. There is a fully equipped gym and pilates studio, as well as two pools. However, it’s worth noting that there is no outdoor jogging track. There is also a deluxe spa that offers treatments from the American wellness guru Dr. Andrew Weil.

Your Seabourn cruise fare is all-inclusive. That means gourmet meals, champagne, wines and spirits are all included in your cruise fare. It is worth noting that there are no speciality dining supplements either.

When I reviewed Seabourn Encore the house champagne was Nicolas Feuillatte. It was most enjoyable. For an additional charge you can purchase premium alcoholic beverages, however I found the house offerings were mostly excellent.

Bottled water and soft drinks are also included, as well as speciality tea and coffee.

Also included are gratuities, so there’s no need to tip.  Although you might consider rewarding good service if a staff member goes above and beyond the call of duty.

There is also a shuttle service between the port and town if it’s not nearby. In addition, guests receive a tote bag which is very handy on shore excursions or when visiting the pool .

Dining in any of the restaurants is a culinary treat. The quality of the produce is exceptional, the presentation is perfect and the tastes are sublime.

The Restaurant has spectacular high ceilings and chandeliers.

There are five restaurants on board Seabourn Encore. These include the main dining room which is known as The Restaurant, The Colonnade, Sushi and the poolside Earth & Ocean restaurant. There is also the speciality dining venue called The Grill by Thomas Keller. My  Seabourn Encore restaurants review rates them all.

In-suite dining is also available 24-hours a day. Light snacks and coffee are served throughout the day in the ever popular Seabourn Square.

The Seabourn Encore dress code ranges from resort casual to formal. During the day you can wear casual, resort-style clothing like shorts, jeans and T-shirts. After 6:00pm guests wear either elegant casual or formal. The daily Herald newsletter will indicate this. For men elegant casual attire includes slacks and a shirt (jacket optional), for women slacks, skirt and blouse.

On formal nights guests will require a Tuxedo, suit or evening gown if they are dining in The Restaurant. Other indoor venues simply ask that men wear a jacket. However, during my Seabourn Encore review voyage many guests chose to dress up even if they weren’t dining in The Restaurant on formal nights.

The number of formal nights depends on the cruise duration. Cruises up to 13 days have one formal evening. There are two formal evenings on cruises of 14 to 20 days and three on longer voyages.

Seabourn Encore is very popular. On my review voyage many guests were Seabourn regulars keen to try out the new ship.

The guests have seen much of the World and they are mostly experienced cruisers. The majority of them come from the U.S.A. and U.K. although there’s usually a contingent of Australians and Europeans on board too.

Like all the ships in the ultra-luxury Seabourn fleet, Seabourn Encore is gay-friendly.

The Seabourn Encore is boldly luxurious, yet it retains a relaxed ambiance. The interior designs by Adam D. Tihany are undeniably beautiful and the spacious suites make Seabourn Encore feel like a home away from home. With perks like gourmet meals, caviar on demand and an all-inclusive lifestyle Seabourn Encore is as good as it gets. Visit the Seabourn website for voyages and destinations.

The 3 types of Seabourn cruise ships, explained

MSN has partnered with The Points Guy for our coverage of credit card products. MSN and The Points Guy may receive a commission from card issuers.

Among cruise lines that focus on high-priced luxury trips, Seabourn has one of the simplest fleets.

All the line’s ships fall into one of three groups: The Encore-class ocean ships, the Odyssey-class ocean ships and the expedition ships (which Seabourn has not given a class name).

Each of these groups is made up of ships constructed around the same time to the same basic design. If you know one member of the group, you know them all.

Seabourn operates seven vessels — two Encore-class ships, three Odyssey-class ships and two expedition ships. That number is set to drop by one in 2024 when one of the Odyssey-class vessels leaves the Seabourn fleet .

Here, we explain the distinctive features of Seabourn’s three ship classes, so you can plan the luxury cruise that’s right for you.

An introduction to Seabourn ships

Seabourn is one of about half a dozen major cruise lines that compete in the market for “ultra-luxury” cruises — voyages that promise a high level of elegance and pampering and have a high price tag to match. The company, which debuted in 1988, claims to have pioneered the niche.

Like all such brands, Seabourn operates ships that are far smaller and more intimate than the giant floating megaresorts operated by Royal Caribbean , Norwegian Cruise Line and Carnival Cruise Line . Instead of thousands of passengers, each Seabourn vessel is designed to hold a few hundred people.

Still, while the ships are smaller than what you’ll find at a mass-market line, they’re not cramped. Indeed, they’re among the most spacious ships at sea when measured by their space-per-passenger ratio, which is about 50% higher than what you’ll find on many mass-market ships. They also operate at a nearly one-to-one ratio of staff to passengers — one of the highest levels in the cruise business.

Both space-per-passenger ratios and staff-to-passenger ratios are measurements used as shorthand for the luxury level of a vessel.

Seabourn ships also offer such luxury touches as marinas for water-based play when the vessels are anchored in calm and sunny locales.

Related: The 8 best luxury cruise lines for elegance and exclusivity

Every cabin is a suite, and the number of restaurants, bars and lounges is impressive for vessels of this size.

Two of the line’s three types of ships — the Encore class and Odyssey class — are similar in design. The main difference between the two is that the Encore-class ships are bigger. They essentially are Odyssey-class ships with an additional deck for extra suites and public areas.

As a result, the Encore-class ships can hold 600 passengers, based on double occupancy, while the Odyssey-class ships are designed to carry up to 458 passengers.

The third and newest class of Seabourn ships, the expedition ships (Seabourn doesn’t use a formal class name for these vessels) are much smaller ships specifically built for expedition cruising — a type of adventure-focused cruising that involves visiting hard-to-reach and off-the-beaten-path places such as Antarctica and the Arctic.

Expedition ships are designed to hold 264 passengers, based on double occupancy.

Seabourn ships aren’t as big or opulent as the luxury vessels operated by some of its competitors, most notably Regent Seven Seas Cruises (which mostly markets vessels carrying 700 to 750 passengers). The line offers a more subdued, intimate sort of luxury. If it’s soaring spaces loaded with pricey marble and crystal chandeliers you’re after, Seabourn may not be for you. However, if you prize intimacy and elegance without a lot of showiness, Seabourn ships could be a good choice.

Encore Class

Ships in class: Seabourn Ovation (2018); Seabourn Encore (2016).

Seabourn’s two Encore-class ships, Seabourn Ovation and Seabourn Encore, are the biggest vessels in the line’s fleet. If you’re in the “bigger is better” camp regarding cruise ships, these are the Seabourn vessels you’ll want to pick.

That said, the ships aren’t all that different than the line’s smaller Odyssey-class vessels (more on those below). Built on the same platform as the Odyssey-class ships, just with one more deck, they feature all the same main public spaces that exist on the earlier vessels, often in the same locations, with a handful of additions, the most notable being a sushi restaurant.

As is the case with the Odyssey-class vessels, the hub of each Encore-class vessel is its centrally located public gathering place known as Seabourn Square.

A revolutionary concept when it first debuted on Seabourn Odyssey, Seabourn Square might best be described as the ship’s living room. Filled with comfortable seating, workstations with computers, a puzzle table and cases lined with books, it’s a multipurpose space that is part lounge, part cafe and part library.

On one end of Seabourn Square is its most alluring feature — a European-style coffee bar serving carefully crafted cappuccinos and other espresso drinks, plus freshly baked pastries, homemade gelato and other nibbles. The spacious room is also home to a circular concierge area at its center where staff can help you book activities, and a guest services desk and a desk where you can book future cruises.

Other major public areas on each Encore-class ship include the Grand Salon, a theater-like space with tiered seating that is home to entertainment at night and serves as a lecture hall during the day. The Club is a cozy lounge with a bar and a tiny casino on the side. At the top of the ship, overlooking the bow is the Observation Bar, which offers stellar 270-degree views (even better views than what is available from the bridge, one deck below).

Dining options include The Restaurant, the ship’s main dining room, which offers elegant sit-down meals; The Patio, a poolside venue serving lighter fare; and The Colonnade, a casual eatery with both buffet and table-service dining during the day.

The Patio converts into the table-service-only Earth & Ocean for dinner. In the latter configuration, it offers bistro-style cuisine that rotates throughout each voyage.

In addition, the ship is home to The Grill by Thomas Keller, an eatery created by the famed chef. It offers his take on the classic American restaurant of the 1950s and 1960s, with his versions of such iconic American dishes as New York strip steak and lobster thermidor. Keller also designed dishes for family-style dinners with set menus served in The Colonnade on select nights.

Unique to this class of ships is Sushi, a dedicated sushi restaurant with just 30 seats. Tucked away in a corner off a central stairway, it’s a hidden gem offering lovely and innovative sushi and sashimi plates at night. During the day, it serves disassembled “bento boxes” with cooked entrees such as miso salmon and teriyaki chicken — the latter arriving with miso soup and small dishes of salad, rice and oshinko.

As is often the case with luxury vessels, none of the eateries have an extra charge.

The Encore-class ships also have a small but sumptuous spa and wellness center with five treatment rooms, a thermal area, a salon and a fitness area.

Decor-wise, the Encore-class ships have a more yacht-like look than the older Odyssey-class vessels, with interiors created from top-to-bottom by well-known hospitality designer Adam Tihany. Tihany didn’t work on the earlier vessels, which have a more Nordic-style sleekness.

I find the Encore-class ships more enticing in their design than the Odyssey-class ships, thanks to Tihany’s rethinking of the decor. That said, I have mixed feelings about their larger size, which results in a slightly more crowded feel. This is most noticeable when at the main pool areas of the vessels, which aren’t much bigger than the main pool areas on the Odyssey-class ships, despite the ships carrying about a third more passengers.

On the plus side, the Encore-class ships have several additional hideaways for outdoor lounging tucked into little nooks at their fronts and backs.

Odyssey Class

Ships in class: Seabourn Quest (2011); Seabourn Sojourn (2010); Seabourn Odyssey (2009).

As noted above, Seabourn’s three Odyssey-class ships are similar to its two Encore-class ships in design, with the main difference being that they are a bit smaller. At 32,326 gross tons, the three vessels measure about 23% smaller than the Encore-class vessels. They hold about 24% fewer passengers.

The result is that the Odyssey-class ships provide a more intimate feel. The basic layout of the ships in the two classes is roughly the same, albeit with a few notable differences. On the Odyssey-class vessels, you’re traveling with fewer people, which results in everything from fewer crowds around the main pool to fewer people in the casual The Colonnade eatery at lunchtime.

As with the Encore-class ships, the public areas of the Odyssey-class ships revolve around a centrally located public gathering space called Seabourn Square, featuring elements of a lounge, cafe and library.

The Odyssey-class ships also have Grand Salons with tiered seating for entertainment and lectures, a cozy The Club bar and lounge, and a ship-top Observation Bar that offers sweeping views.

The biggest difference with the Odyssey-class ships is that they have one less deck and, therefore, 24% fewer suites. In public areas, the only notable difference is that there is no sushi restaurant and a smaller The Grill by Thomas Keller. (Initially, these ships didn’t have Thomas Keller restaurants, but they were carved out of space previously dedicated to the casual eatery, The Colonnade.)

The deck where the sushi restaurant and large Thomas Keller restaurant are located on the Encore-class ships is the deck that is missing on the Odyssey-class ships.

The expedition ships

Ships in class: Seabourn Pursuit (2023); Seabourn Venture (2022).

Seabourn Pursuit and Seabourn Venture are the Seabourn ships you book to get off the beaten path.

Much smaller than the other vessels in the Seabourn fleet and designed to carry just 264 passengers each, they’re both expedition ships — small vessels built extra tough to travel to the most remote and hard-to-reach parts of the world, including Antarctica and the Arctic.

As is typical for ships of this type, they both have extra-thick hulls and other features that allow them to bump through ice in polar regions. They carry Zodiac boats for landings in remote areas that have no infrastructure. They also sail with expedition guides to lead you on the landings and explain the wildlife and scenery.

Related: Luxury adventure cruise ships you have to see to believe

Still, unlike many expedition ships, Seabourn Pursuit and Seabourn Venture are luxurious vessels, with many of the upscale venues and amenities found on Seabourn’s bigger, more traditional luxury ships. If you know the bigger ships, you’ll feel right at home on the expedition ships.

Seabourn Pursuit and Seabourn Venture both have Seabourn’s signature Seabourn Square area that offers snacks, coffee and a guest services desk. Each offers a version of the main restaurant called The Restaurant and the more casual The Colonnade eatery.

Rounding out the public spaces are a smaller version of Seabourn’s spa and wellness center and a bar and lounge called The Club.

Suites on these vessels are especially swanky, with bright bathrooms all featuring bathtubs. Walk-in closets provide ample storage, even for long sailings, and every room has a small drying closet for outdoor adventure clothing. The latter is a welcome touch after rainy days and wet landings (when you put on waterproof boots provided by the ship and step off the Zodiac into the water when you reach the shore).

In addition, small in-room touches, like Swarovski binoculars and a pillow menu, further enhance the ship’s already thoughtful design.

The expedition ships also offer features that are unique to their class, from a “mud room” with cubbies where passengers can prep for landings in remote places such as Antarctica to a pair of submarines that are available for extra-fee underwater excursions.

In short, the ships are like smaller, more adventurous versions of the bigger Seabourn vessels.

Bottom line

The three types of Seabourn ships vary significantly in size , but they all are similar in their onboard venues and amenities. If you’ve been on any Seabourn ship and loved it, you’ll surely love its other vessels, too.

Best of Moscow by high speed train

Sure would appreciate someone who has taken "Best of Moscow by high speed train" from St. Petersburg could please share their impressions of this shore excursion. From the description this sounds like a very long day.

Wondering how the 4 hour train trip was in terms of accommodations, etc. Also what time did you leave the ship and what time at night did you return? Were both legs of the trip on the high speed rail (I read that slower trains also travel the same tracks)?

My wife and I are considering this excursion. We thought that if we are making all the effort to go to Russia then how could we pass up going to Moscow, walking in Red Square, seeing St. Basil, etc.

If you are considering this on the 2015 June Baltic cruise on Voyager; my suggestion is don't. There is so much to do in St. Petersburg and although a train is one of my favorite ways to travel the time would be far better spent in St. P.

Thanks for the advice. Yes, this would be on the Voyager during the 2015 season but not yet sure exactly which cruise.

We did the Moscow excursion "on a different luxury line", but from your brief description it sounds very much like the same trip, so I will operate on that assumption. It is a VERY long day! We left the ship at 5:30 AM and returned at 12:30 AM. The highspeed train trip is comfortable, and while they call it "Business Class" it does not compare well to the equivalent class on say Rail Europe. When we did it in 2011, we did have highspeed both ways, and the trip back seemed much longer as the adrenaline and excitement had worn off!:D

Moscow itself is not that terribly different from any other big city in the world, but this Cold War kid never thought he would ever stand in Red Square, never mind walk the grounds of The Kremlin, or tour The Kremlin Palace, or see (but not visit) Lenin's Tomb, or visit The Armoury. But he did, and he loved every minute of it! Yes, it is a long day, and you barely scratch a scratch on the surface, but it is worth it. There is a tremendous amount to see in St. Petersburg, but every Baltic cruise goes to St. Petersburg, so you can go back if you choose to. Not every cruiseline offers you the chance to see Moscow.

I have not personally done this tour, but our last time in St Petersburg, the private guide that we hired for a day was leading the regent tour to Moscow on the high speed train the next day. He said it was way better than the previous alternative, which was flying to Moscow and back. He said that you actually got to Moscow faster because you didn't have to deal with airline checkin etc. it did seem like a very long day to me, and there is so much to see and do in st. Petersburg that I didn't consider doing it.

We toured to Moscow from St. Petersburg via the hi-speed SAPSAN train last September, from a Baltic cruise on the Oceania Marina. You need to have a two-night, three day port call in St. Petersburg to take this tour because the tour typically leaves the ship around 5:00 - 5:30 AM and doesn't return until after midnight the next day. We didn't take the ship's tour; we made private arrangements with TravelAllRussia for three days of touring, the first and third days in St. Petersburg and the second day the tour to Moscow by train. Our cost for the private tour for three days was about the same as what the ship charged for the excursion to Moscow alone. There are a number of private tour agencies that operate in St. Petersburg and offer the Moscow train tours; we would strongly recommend them over the ship's tours.

All three days had private guides with car and driver. The second day, the driver picked us up at the ship and took us to the train, but we were alone on the train, and met in Moscow by the guide on the station platform. After our tour and dinner, we were brought back to the train and after the return train trip met by the driver and taken back to the ship. Because you are alone on the train you must have your own Russian visas.

If this is your first visit to St. Petersburg, I would agree there is much more to see there. We found Moscow somewhat a disappointment, particularly Red Square. The Kremlin and the cathedral in Red Square were also worth seeing. But the best thing we saw was the Moscow subway! I worked for the Washington Metro system back in the 1980s as it grew from 40 to 80 miles and although I was in the computer area, I learned a lot about the challenges of running a subway system. We used the Moscow system to get across the city from where we had dinner to the train station, and I was amazed at the cleanliness', speed of operation, the short headways maintained, and the courtesy of everyone involved. A very impressive experience!

We had been to St. Petersburg before, and so had the time to take a day and go to Moscow. Also, I really like trains, and the SAPSAN is a German train set running on Russian rails. Seats are like first class domestic air, spacious but not too plush or comfortable, but with enough room. Not too much recline, and almost 8 hours on the train in two shots is a lot for an old man. They come through and sell drinks, candy, etc. but the sellers don't speak English and no one around us helped, so we had just poor coffee once coming, and brought stuff with us for the trip back. Not too much to see from the train either, particularly on the return when it is night the whole way.

If you decide to go, take a private tour and avoid the overly expensive ship's tour. I'm glad we did it, but wouldn't bother to repeat the tour; we've seen Moscow.

Thanks so much to all of you for the thorough and thought insight. Yhe information you have provided is most helpful.

countflorida: Your detailed post is very helpful. We are not quite ready for a Baltic cruise but should do so within a year. Time enough to do our pre travel research, bookings and visa gathering.:) Thank you!

From the description this sounds like a very long day.   Wondering how the 4 hour train trip was in terms of accommodations, etc. Also what time did you leave the ship and what time at night did you return? We thought that if we are making all the effort to go to Russia then how could we pass up going to Moscow, walking in Red Square, seeing St. Basil, etc.

I did this on Seabourn. IMO DONT. Take Aeroflop (er Aeroflot). The train has non folding seats where you are literally knee to knee with your fellow passenger (facing each other). Further they don't believe in air conditioning. It's also the worlds slowed bullet train. I think I would have found more enjoyment wandering around the St. Petersburg and Moscow airports.

Countflorida,

This is a little off topic,, however we had planned a river cruise in Russia but decided we would rather stay on land and have booked about two weeks with Travel-All-Russia using the private guide and driver. I'm curious as to how you found them as a tour company.

The guides they provided were fine. We had a different guide each of the days in St. Petersburg, but both were flexible, pleasant, knowledgeable and spoke English very well, as did the guide in Moscow, incidentally. She was a bit aloof, distant, not too friendly, but otherwise fine. In fact, she was the one who suggested taking the Metro, which unexpectedly became one of the highlights of the Moscow excursion. If I have a complaint with AllTravelRussia, it is with their plan and its execution (more later).

I had requested emphasis on World War II (in Russia, the Great Patriotic War) sites and info. In scheduling us, they weren't careful about dates and a couple of the sites we wanted to see were scheduled on the third day, after we'd been to Moscow. But both sites were closed that day of the week, and that info was readily available, right on web sites describing them. Also, the included meals (lunches in St. Pete, dinner in Moscow) were not what we asked for: light meals with some choices, so we could avoid things we didn't like and choose things we did like. My request was ignored; we were given full Russian meals with a fixed menu, no choice. On the first day, a fish dish was the entre, but I am allergic to fish. Fortunately, I had the e-mail I'd sent with me and showed it to the guide, and she was able to change my entre to chicken, which was very good actually. But we didn't want a 3-4 course lunches or dinner (in Moscow). We had the guide drop the lunch the third day, although we never got any credit or refund. But, particularly in contrast to the ship's tours, the prices were so reasonable we didn't worry too much about it.

The people who were on the ship's tour to Moscow saw us boarding the same train for which they were forced to queue up and wait on the way back, and asked us what we had done. I was candid and open so they were not happy when I explained what we had arranged and particularly what it had cost. Also, when we returned to the ship, we found they had laid on a late supper for those who had gone to Moscow, so up we went and had something. Well, it turns out the late supper was supposed to be just for those on the ship's tour, but we and others on 'independent' tours, there were a dozen or more of us, crashed the party, actually got there first, and they didn't realize it until the larger group arrived and there weren't enough tables/places set. By that time, the 'independents' had all gotten served and were eating; what could they do?

A couple from the larger group sat down with us and asked us about our tour, and they were the ones I told about our arrangement and its cost. They turned to others who’d been with them and announced the details, loudly enough so the whole room heard, which started a lot of bitching and complaining. I gathered they weren't very happy with the ship's tour to begin with, and this was the straw that broke the camel's back. We finished up and beat it out of there, but overheard later that one of the excursion staff came to check on something and ran into a real mess. I caught a cold on the trip, which forced me to bed the second day following in Tallinn, so by the time we reappeared we heard about the contretemps' but apparently no one recalled who started it, thankfully.

Because of what happened to us, I would probably not use AllTravelRussia if I were to go again, or if I did, I would be sure to get confirmation of every detail of the tour. They do have good reviews generally, and we were certainly helped by their visa department and liked the guides and drivers. Their weakness, I say now with full 20:20 hindsight, is that once the sales person who plans the tour, sells it to you and collects your money, he (or she) transfers the plan to their Russia office for implementation; there is no follow-up to make sure it gets done right. And that is where our problems arose; we paid for a custom tour but got a standard package with a few destinations switched, and no one checked them out, even to see when they were open the day we were scheduled to go. If you check every detail that’s important to you, it should be OK, but that’s a hell of a way to have to do business, in my opinion.

Thank you for the 20/20 hindsight observation on your Russian tour operator, and better priced than the ship's excursion cost.

Thanks very much for the feedback.

We had the same experience as you so far as price. We originally booked a Viking Cruise but, hearing some things about the river cruises that made us unhappy, looked into other options. T-A-R cost the same or less than a cruise and had us in hotels for 11 days. We opted for the private tour. They have three tour levels, based on hotels. We originally opted for the four star as it did not cost much more than the three star hotels. Finally we decided to throw it all in and upgraded to five star. In Moscow we will be at the newly opened Kempinsky which is two blocks from Red Square. In St. Petersburg it is the Grand Hotel Europe, one of the most vaunted luxury hotels in Russia. Location is important for us as the tours use up only part of the day so being in the center of everything for our independent touring is important. As with many other cities, the less you pay, the farther out of the center of town you are.

We have been working with our salesman in D.C. and he seems to get back to us with the changes we want. He recently returned from Russia so is up on everything. When I asked they said they paid the full TA commission if I wanted so I got my usual TA on board so he is watching our back and giving us that extra level of comfort. He also set up our air, which I know pays him little or nothing, and got us business class for much less than T-A-R wanted for economy, though it took working for a while with a consolidator. He's happy to get his 10 percent on this trip without having booked it. He also took care of the trip insurance. We've been doing a lot of research on the CC sister site Trip Advisor and will write a report there. We will, I guess, become a source of info for CC members after having spent 5 days in Moscow and 6 in SP.
