Review: Bangkok River Dinner Cruise on the Manohra Boat

In Bangkok there are numerous hotels and private operators who run dinner cruises along the Chao Phraya River. I recently took my family on the Manohra dinner cruise which only holds a maximum of 40 guests so the atmosphere is intimate and sedate.

The Manohra boat is a 50-year-old converted teak rice barge which has been completely refurbished for dining, but has still managed to retain its original charm and character. All diners are seated on the upper deck which provides for a pleasant breeze and excellent views of Bangkok at night. The kitchen/galley is located on the lower deck. There is plenty of room on the upper deck and with a maximum of 40 diners, the tables and chairs aren’t crowded together so it makes for a very pleasant and intimate dining experience.

The Manohra dinner cruise departs daily at 19.30 from the pier at the Anantara Bangkok Riverside Hotel (formerly Bangkok Marriott & Spa). Guests can join the boat at the Anantara or be picked up at the Taksin (Sathorn) Central Pier at 19.45. We were staying at the Bossotel Hotel and walked to the Taksin/Sathorn pier to catch the complimentary shuttle boat service which runs to the Anantara (departures every 15 minutes). This meant we joined the cruise at the starting point and so were able to select where we wanted to sit on the boat. We were also given buttonholes and had souvenir photos taken at the Anantara pier with a lady in traditional Thai costume.

The cruise runs north along the Chao Phraya River as far as Rama VIII Bridge before turning around and heading back to the hotel (stopping at Taksin/Sathorn pier on request). The Manohra arrives back at the Anantara at approximately 22.00.

The boat passes a number of interesting buildings and landmarks and these are pointed out to you by the unobtrusive on-board commentary. Guests are also given a printed route guide and map which details what to look out for including, Wat Arun , the Grand Palace and Wat Phra Kaeo , the Royal Barges, Wat Pho and Santa Cruz Church. Many of these sights are beautifully illuminated at night and provide a lovely backdrop to the dining experience.

Guests can choose from two different set menus; gold or silver. We opted for the silver menu which consisted of the following courses:

• Spring rolls
• Tom yam kung (clear prawn soup)
• Beef massaman curry
• Tiger prawns and sweet chilli sauce
• Sticky rice and mango

Included in the price were two types of rice (red and white) and a choice of tea or coffee at the end of the meal. Other drinks (alcoholic or non-alcoholic) are charged separately.

The food on the silver menu was good and although each dish wasn’t particularly big, my family felt that the portions provided were more than adequate for the average diner. The tom yam kung and the som tam lacked the spice and kick you would normally anticipate , but were still enjoyable.

The gold menu is currently priced at 1,990 Baht per person (995 for children) with the silver menu priced at 1,250 Baht (625 for children). This does not include service charge and tax which is approximately 17% in total and is added on to the bill at the end of your meal.

I booked directly with the cruise operator via their website at manohracruises.com . I emailed just three days before the required cruise date and received a confirmation email back almost immediately. Payment can be made on the boat at the end of the cruise. The booking process was very smooth and I liked the fact that we didn’t have to pay in advance.

My family really enjoyed the Manohra dinner river cruise and we have no hesitation in recommending it for visitors to Bangkok. There are plenty of cheaper alternatives, especially if you want to go on a ‘party boat. However, for a relaxing and refined evening the Manohra dinner cruise is a good choice.

The Embassy of France

The Embassy of France is almost hidden from view by lush greenery. Built in the mid 19th century, the European-style residence evokes the grandeur of old Bangkok with its louvered shutters and spacious verandahs.

The Embassy of Portugal

The Embassy of Portugal is the oldest mission in Bangkok, and as such commands a prime position overlooking the river. Its award-winning architecture by Joachim Grassi has been carefully preserved, winning the ASA Architectural Conservation Award in 1984.

The Holy Rosary Church

The Holy Rosary Church was established by Portuguese Catholics who relocated to Bangkok after the fall of Ayutthaya. The Gothic Revival structure is crowned by a soaring steeple, and the church is known for its beautiful stained-glass windows.

Siam Commercial Bank

Next to the church is the Siam Commercial Bank, established in the early 1900s and as such Thailand’s oldest bank branch. This magnificent building was designed by Italian architect Annibale Rigotti in Beaux Arts style.

The Phra Buddha Yodfa Bridge

The Phra Buddha Yodfa Bridge, better known as the Memorial Bridge, was built to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the founding of the Chakri Dynasty. Attractions nearby include Pak Klong Talad Flower Market and Pahurat, Bangkok’s Little India.

Wat Prayoon

Wat Prayoon is an ancient monastery of the early Rattanakosin era. The striking white stupa contains Buddha relics, while the replica Mount Meru is a tranquil lake where turtles come to feed.

Bangkok’s other founding Catholic church, the Santa Cruz, was constructed by Portuguese Catholics in 1770. It is known by locals as Wat Kudi Jeen for its rather Chinese design, and is recognisable by its red dome.

Wat Kalayanamit

Wat Kalayanamit was built in the reign of King Rama III, and thus is considered relatively new. The name means “good friend” in Sanskrit, and it is believed that a visit to the temple ensures a life blessed with good friends.

The Royal Seminary

The Royal Seminary is located within Rajini, the first girls’ school in Thailand founded by Queen Saovabha. King Rama V built it in memory of Queen Sunanda Kumariratana who tragically drowned in the Chao Phraya in 1880.

Vichai Prasit

The white-walled Vichai Prasit is an old Ayutthaya fortress constructed under the supervision of French engineer de la Mare. It played a role in the siege of Bangkok in 1699, and today serves as the Royal Thai Navy Headquarters.

One of Bangkok’s most beautiful temples, and reputedly the most photographed, is the magnificent Wat Arun or Temple of Dawn. Built at the height of the Ayutthaya period, it used to be the home of the Emerald Buddha before the capital and the palace were moved to the other side of the river.

Across the river lies Wat Pho, more commonly known as the Temple of the Reclining Buddha. It features the oldest reclining Buddha in Bangkok, and the largest in the country at 46 metres long. Wat Pho is also world renowned for its traditional Thai massage school.

The Grand Palace

The Grand Palace has been the official residence of the Thai monarch since 1782. It plays host to the nation’s most important ceremonies such as coronations. Within its walls lies Wat Phra Kaew, the Temple of the Emerald Buddha.

Wat Rakhang

Wat Rakhang is one of the original temples remaining from the Ayutthaya period. King Rama I lived here before he was installed on the throne, and today the temple is one of the nine that Bangkokians make pilgrimage to on holy days.

Siriraj Hospital

Siriraj is the oldest hospital in Bangkok, built in 1888 by King Rama V after one of his sons died from an unknown illness. Today, the hospital is a centre of excellence with patients coming from across the country.

Thammasat University

Thammasat is one of the kingdom’s oldest and most prestigious universities. Alumni include former prime ministers, reserve bank governors and supreme court judges. Its iconic dome was the centre of Free Thai resistance during World War II.

Phra Sumen was constructed in 1783 to fortify the old city during the reign of King Rama I. Named for the mythical Mount Menu, it is one of only two forts from that period remaining, and is notable for its octagonal structure.

Bank of Thailand Museum

Next to the fort is the Bank of Thailand Museum, formerly the Bangkhunphrom Palace. Commissioned in the early 1900s as a residence for a prince, the building boasts some of the most beautiful stucco work in Thailand.

The Royal Barges Museum

The Royal Barges Museum houses the king’s collection of ancient teak barges. To mark auspicious occasions, the royal fleet manned by over 2,000 oarsmen sails down the Chao Phraya to the delight of Bangkokians.
