'ALMOST IN TEARS:' McDonald’s brings back beloved McRib after 10 years Back to video

The popular sandwich will be back nationwide for a limited time beginning on Jan. 30, according to a press release from the fast-food giant.

“In the last year alone, our team received thousands of inquiries on social media from very passionate Canadian McRib fans asking to bring it back here,” Alyssa Buetikofer, vice president and chief marketing officer at McDonald’s Canada, said in a statement.

“The McRib is truly a fan favourite,” she continued. “It appeals to guests of all ages — from loyal followers who have patiently waited a decade for its return, to our newer fans who have only heard the legend.”

The McRib combines a boneless pork patty dipped in tangy barbecue sauce, topped with slivered onions and pickles on a toasted homestyle bun.

“It’s no surprise this sandwich is an icon, with its uniquely delicious balance of sweet, tangy and savoury flavours,” the release states.

McDonald’s Canada has been teasing the return of the “international icon” for the last few days on social media, including a text exchange between McDonald’s and the “McRibbbb,” whose last message was on Feb. 14, 2014, the last time the sandwich was in Canada.

The restaurant chain also looked at what the McRib may have missed over the last decade to the official announcement of the sandwich’s return.

“Takes deep breath, prepares for chaos,” McDonald’s wrote as it counted down to “McRib mania.”

Indeed, McRib lovers took to social media to show their appreciation for the saucy comeback.

“Salivating right now,” one person drooled.

Another added: “I’m almost in tears.”

A third commented: “McRib, I’ll accept you with a side part and skinny jeans. Just come back to me.”

Even people who aren’t fans of the sandwich were happy for its return.

“McRib is that ex that you think about from time to time, you don’t love em anymore, but you want em to do well.”

And because you can’t please everyone, others requested other menu items to follow in the McRib’s footsteps, from the cinnamelts, the Big Xtra and, of course, the personal pizzas.

The McRib was first introduced in the United States in 1981 as a limited-time item.

McDonald's McRib Returns After Going On Farewell Tour A Year Ago

McRib sandwich on McDonald's tray

McDonald's brought back an iconic sandwich in the fall of 2023 — just one year after it assured customers  the beloved McRib was leaving for the last time ever . Indeed, the sandwich returned to select locations in November, along with a tidal wave of enthusiasm ... and confusion from fans of the meaty creation.

This isn't the first time McDonald's has bamboozled its customer base by taking the McRib on a farewell tour and then saying, "Just kidding," the following year. Take 2005, for example. That year, the sandwich received a celebratory last hurrah. Then, McDonald's brought it back in 2006 for a Farewell Tour II. Fast-forward another year to 2007, and the sandwich made yet another comeback.

Many argue that McDonald's' maneuver to pressure customers into purchasing the McRib before it disappears forever is simply a marketing strategy. It's clearly working, though, because in 2022 (the last time the sandwich went on a farewell tour) the chain saw a 10.3% boost in sales for the fourth quarter.

The McRib is making appearances in the Midwest

So, yes, the McRib is returning after only one year away, and no one is really surprised. Now, fans of the boneless, BBQ pork sandwich can sink their teeth into it once again. It will only reappear at select locations, however; various outlets have reported sightings in Indiana , Kentucky , and Ohio , while casual fans have been using McRibLocator.com  to track their own run-ins with the product. Although it's not available everywhere, many who mourned the seasonal staple and bemoaned its apparent farewell in 2022 argue that this limited release is better than nothing.

Back in September, Instagram snacking account Snackolater predicted the return of the McRib, and people who popped off in the comments section were clearly over McDonald's nonsense. "Not interested in this abusive relationship," wrote one social media user. Another also had enough of the chain's game-playing, remarking, "It should just stay gone."

A spokesperson told Today that some folks just weren't ready to say goodbye to the iconic sandwich — it's been around since 1981, after all, and the internet has plenty of copycat McRib recipes  for those who want to make it at home during the off-season. While some customers believe McDonald's achieved sandwich perfection with this number, many people on the opposite side of the aisle would rather this sandwich exit to the left.

The McRib is one of the most anticipated menu item for McDonald’s superfans, often popping up for a short time with little to no warning. But now, the company hints, it could be going into cold storage for a long time after its current run is over.

McDonald’s is dubbing the fall 2022 return as the “ McRib Farewell Tour .” Sales of the sandwich will go on sale Oct 31.

the mcrib is coming back 10.31 but this is its farewell tour — McDonald's (@McDonalds) October 24, 2022

Of course, if the music industry has taught us anything, it’s that “farewell” tours don’t always mean the end. In fact, they often are not. But implying that the end is nigh is likely to stir up demand for the sandwich among its cultlike following.

The McRib, in fact, had its first “farewell tour” in 2005, repeating that marketing stunt for the next three years. The longest the company has gone without the McRib was an eight-year stretch starting in 2012.

The love-it-or-hate-it barbecue-sauce-smothered boneless pork sandwich is kind of like a prairie dog, in that it pops up at random locations—and your local Micky D’s might not be one of them, even though the distribution is fairly widespread this year. The chain made it available nationwide in 2020 for the first time since 2012, but last year it was back to “limited locations.”

The McRib made its debut in 1981, but was pulled from the menu four years later due to poor sales. It made another run from 1989 through 2005. Since then, it has been a seasonal item, and the scarcity has made it a legend among fast-food fanatics.

Trying to find one before it potentially goes away for a while? Some enterprising fans have decided to crowdsource their devotion for the sandwich and created the McRib locator , which shows which stores throughout the country are selling the sandwich.

McDonald's Brings the McRib Back for What They're Calling Yet Another 'Farewell Tour'

The beloved sandwich will be available on the fast-food chain's menu through Nov. 20

Dave Quinn is a Senior Editor for PEOPLE. He has been working at the brand since 2016, and is the author of the No. 1 New York Times best-selling book, Not All Diamonds and Rosé: The Inside Story of the Real Housewives from the People Who Lived It.

The McRib sandwich is returning to McDonald's for what the restaurant chain teases might be the last time.

According to a description on the fast-food giant's website, the legendary sandwich — filled with boneless pork coated in barbecue sauce, and topped with slivered onions and tart dill pickles on a hoagie-style bun — is going on a "McRib Farewell Tour" this year, remaining at participating locations through Nov. 20.

"Get one while you can because this is the McRib Farewell Tour ," the listing reads. "Enjoy our famous pork sandwich as if it's your last!"

Of course, those who have followed the McRib's journey over the decades know that the fan-favorite food item has a history of finding its way back to menus, even after previous "farewell" tours.

Since its debut in 1981 at a McDonald's location in Kansas City, Kansas, the McRib earned a cult following thanks to its limited-edition runs. This was despite being an initial flop, with the sandwich being overshadowed and oversold by the company's Chicken McNuggets, which came out just three years earlier.

It particularly shot into the culture zeitgeist in the summer of 1994, when it was brought back in honor of the theatrical release of the live-action Flintstones film starring John Goodman , Elizabeth Perkins , Rick Moranis and Rosie O'Donnell .

Proving to be the perfect prehistoric companion to the film, the McRib's popularity gave it a permanent spot on McDonald's menu throughout the '90s and early 2000s.

Overseas, it made appearances in Germany, New Zealand and France, and a McRib Jr. sandwich was even introduced.

McDonald's put the McRib on a "McRib Farewell Tour" in 2005 — though, much like Cher and KISS , repeated the tour every year for the next three years.

By 2012, the McRib was back in stores, but as always, only temporarily. The fast-food chain wound up keeping it off the menu for eight long years, only bringing it back in December 2020 , and then last November for its 40th anniversary .

Now, it's McRib Season all over again, as fans call it. And those using the "McRib Locator" should be able to track its return to menus.

McDonald’s McRib is back — but not for long

Yes, it’s back. It always comes back.

It’s that time of year again. And no, we’re not referring to the fact that we’re a week out from Thanksgiving — we’re talking about the return of the McRib.

Despite McDonald’s best efforts to convince us that November 2022 was its “Farewell Tour ,” we knew it would come back. It always does.

McDonald’s confirmed to TODAY.com that its polarizing boneless pork sandwich, the McRib, has returned to select restaurants this November. That’s right — just like ‘N Sync , this pop culture icon of yesteryear is back. You’ll have to check with your local McDonald’s to see if it’s available near you.

Rumors of its return began bubbling up on Sept. 26 when popular snack-spotting social media account Snackolator posted about it:

“Woah! Last fall the McRib went on a ‘Farewell Tour,’ but it’s coming back this November!” reads the post. “I’m still confused how a Farewell Tour can be just a year, but I don’t think fans are going to care all that much.”

In the comments section, many folks validated that hypothesis.

“Best news I’ve heard all day!” commented one Instagram user.

“Like Cher it’s back!!!! Thank the snack gods,” commented another user, referring to Cher’s habit of putting on farewell tours  every few years .

The McRib, with its seasoned boneless pork dipped in Tangy BBQ Sauce and topped with chopped onions and pickles, is a favorite for some, including TODAY’s own Al Roker, who even developed his own copycat version for those who crave the elusive sandwich outside of November.

“It turns out not everyone was ready to say goodbye to the McRib after last year’s Farewell Tour,” a McDonald’s USA spokesperson tells TODAY.com. “While it won’t be available nationwide, some lucky fans may find their favorite elusive saucy sandwich at their local McDonald’s restaurants this November.”

But, like we said, no one is surprised it’s coming back. Ever since its debut in 1981, it’s been a limited-time item we can always count on to return. It’s McDonald’s pumpkin spice latte. (Sorry, Al — we know you’d hate that comparison ).

McDonald’s didn’t specify when it would depart from menus again, but last year it was gone by Nov. 20 — which doesn’t leave much time to satiate your McRib craving.

Is this really the end for the McRib?

One of McDonald's more elusive menu items, the McRib features a seasoned boneless pork patty dipped in a tangy BBQ sauce topped with slivered onions and dill pickles. As the final touch, the sandwich is served on a toasted homestyle bun. According to McDonald's, fans have until November 20 to get their hands on the McRib, which can be ordered in the McDonald’s app for delivery or pick up.

You don't have to be a McRib lover to know that the sandwich has seen its fair share of triumphant returns and farewells. Just last year, the McRib returned to menus for a limited time following a short hiatus.

Although the McRib has plenty of fans, it has also found itself an adversary or two. For those up to date with their fast food feuds, you likely recall that the McRib was called out by rapper Pusha T last month on "Rib Roast." On the diss record , Pusha T rapped, "They call me when it's time to do damage. When the quality ain't up to my standard. That McRib falls below average, replaced by the Country Style Arby's Rib Sandwich."

Whether you're a fan or adversary, do you think the McRib's upcoming farewell tour will be its final goodbye?

This could be the last chance for fast food fans to get their hands on a McDonald's McRib as the golden arches prepares to say goodbye to the saucy sandwich.

Starting Oct. 31, the seasoned, boneless pork sensation that's slathered in tangy barbecue sauce and topped with slivered onions and pickles, will be back on menus for a limited time.

"We can't say for certain what the future holds. But for now, fans should enjoy the McRib while they can, because it won't be returning nationwide anytime soon," a spokesperson for McDonald's said in a statement to "Good Morning America."

"After three straight years headlining McDonald's nationwide menu each fall, the iconic sandwich is embarking on a 'Farewell Tour,'" McDonald's said in a press release . "Like any true farewell tour, we're hoping this isn't a 'goodbye' ... because as our McRib stans have experienced time and time again: you never know when – or if – the McRib is coming back."

The now-famous sandwich first hit menus in 1980, got a mini version in 2003 and prompted a McRib locator in 2008 so fans could track down which locations had it available. In 2021, McDonald's USA created it's first NFT offering a digital version of the McRib.

The sandwich may be gone, but for superfans who hope to enjoy more of the McRib legacy, McDonald's is launching a line of merch.

The McRib 'Farewell Tour' is McDonald's latest attempt to cash in on nostalgia

thumbnail

McDonald's is once again promoting a "farewell tour" for the McRib sandwich.

The seasonal offering, which since its introduction in 1981 has periodically disappeared from the fast food giant's menu, is making one more appearance at McDonald's locations nationwide.

The sandwich will be available starting October 31, and McDonald's has released promotional materials encouraging customers to "enjoy our famous pork sandwich as if it's your last!"

Indeed, the burger chain is hoping that love for the sandwich — which includes a McRib pork patty, bun, barbecue sauce, pickles and onions — will be strong enough to get customers to pay for limited-edition McRib merch, which it will sell on its website during the McRib's "final" run.

"Like any true farewell tour, we're hoping this isn't a 'goodbye' but a 'see you later.,'" McDonald's says in its press release . "Because as our McRib stans have experienced time and time again: you never know when — or if — the McRib is coming back."

It's a strategy that's designed to create a sense of urgency for customers, according to Vanderbilt University marketing professor Kelly Goldsmith.

"McDonald's is leaning hard on the scarcity marketing tactics right now," Goldsmith says. "We see it with the McRib, we see it with their adult Happy Meals which had limited-edition toys. McDonald's is putting scarcity marketing everywhere they possibly can."

They're a very iconic American brand, but they're kind of dusty. The scarcity marketing tactics are a way ... to be playful and stay engaged with their consumers. Kelly Goldsmith Vanderbilt University marketing professor

Part of the reasoning behind McDonald's recent approach to limited-edition promotions — last year it teamed up with K-pop superstars BTS as part of its Famous Orders campaign — is to create excitement for the brand among a younger audience.

"They're a very iconic American brand, but they're kind of dusty," Goldsmith says. "The scarcity marketing tactics are a way that allows McDonald's to be playful and to stay engaged with their consumers, but also be true to a lot of what makes that brand their brand."

"If you look at the adult Happy Meals, the toys are limited edition and are being resold on eBay for 10x markups. The McRib merch will probably also be limited edition and then get resold at a huge markup," she adds.

"McDonald's doesn't make any money off the eBay secondary market, but the word of mouth is keeping the brand current and getting it into your house in new and different ways."

While McDonald's says that it's possible the McRib will enter its fast food graveyard along with the McPizza, Chicken Selects and Snack Wraps, Goldsmith believes it's more likely than not that the McRib will make a comeback at some point.

"I mean, [consumers] lost it for eight years, right? This is a real threat," she says. "But will it come back? I would guess yes."

The McRib ‘Farewell Tour’ Is a Lie

Mcdonald's has announced the mcrib's "farewell tour," but we're not so convinced..

Image for article titled The McRib ‘Farewell Tour’ Is a Lie

The  annual return of the McRib is upon us: McDonald’s has announced the sandwich will be back at participating restaurants starting October 31, once the dust has settled on the Boo Buckets promotion . Some friends of mine have even reported finding early McRibs at certain locations already, much to their delight . Normally this would all be some pretty ho-hum news, since the McRib’s return is something I report on annually , but the 2022 announcement dropped with a twist: This year, the McRib will be mounting its “ farewell tour.”

Or so McDonald’s says:

Is the McRib back at McDonald’s for the last time?

We reached out to McDonald’s, and the company seemingly confirmed that this is indeed the McRib’s last hurrah.

“After three straight years headlining our nationwide menu, this fall will be the McRib’s Farewell Tour - complete with limited-edition throwback McRib merch available for purchase, so diehard fans can forever rock their favorite sandwich even after it’s gone from the menu,” read a statement from the company sent to The Takeout via email.

T his response felt incomplete, to say the least . Though McDonald’s repeatedly speaks of the McRib’s “farewell,” and the fact that it will be “gone,” there’s no mention in the email, nor their press materials, of the McRib actually being discontinued . Asked for clarification, however, the company remained coy.

“We can’t say for certain what the future holds,” read a follow-up statement from McDonald’s. “ But for now, fans should enjoy the McRib while they can, because it won’t be returning nationwide anytime soon. ”

The key is in the word “nationwide.” That doesn’t explicitly state that the McRib is being nuked from the menu forever — it just implies that not everyone will get it the next time it’s around.

What the McRib Farewell Tour really means

McDonald’s has pulled this exact stunt before, right down to the “McRib Farewell Tour” term. It happened in 2005, reported QSR Magazine that year, and in 2006 McDonald’s had something of a sequel promotion called the McRib Farewell Tour II — and yet the sandwich reappeared on menus in 2007. It’s been on and off the menu at a fairly regular cadence since then, but the key is that the return of the McRib hasn’t been a nationwide re- release since 2012; it’s only been at select locations. I n 2020 , the McRib came back nationally again.

It’s not that the McRib is going away, per se. I’m sure many of us will be seeing it come back again next year, like always . But it’ll fall back into its old pattern of only being released in certain markets as opposed to all US locations . Since I live in a larger market,   in McDonald’s home city of Chicago, that probably accounts for why I don’t remember any major disruptions in the McRib’s release schedule. We’ve had it here regularly for decades, even if the rest of the country hasn’t.

From where I sit, the McRib’s 2022 Farewell Tour is just a marketing stunt, and for many of us, there’s no reason to worry— though I realize that for certain areas of the country, it might really feel like you have to grab a McRib while you still can. McDonald’s isn’t specifying which markets will see the McRib’s return next year and which won’t; maybe that decision depends on what franchise locations decide to do. In any case, here’s some valuable intel for all of us: It’s not hard to make a great McRib at home .

'Farewell Tour': McDonald's puts McRib back on the menu again, suggests it's the last time

The curtains appear to be closing on one of McDonald's signature seasonal sandwiches.

The McRib, brought back intermittently over the years after going into semi-retirement in 2005, is back for a limited time until November 20. McDonald's issued a release suggesting it could be the sandwich's final hurrah.

"Get one while you can because this is the McRib Farewell Tour," McDonald's writes on its website . "Enjoy our famous pork sandwich as if it's your last!"

The 520-calorie sandwich – layered with boneless pork, coated in barbecue sauce, and topped with slivered onions and dill pickles on a hoagie-style bun – has a cult following.

Responses to the news on social media ranged from cynical to outraged.

Here's where you can get one: Some McDonald's will start selling Krispy Kreme doughnuts

The McRib originated in Kansas City, Kansas in 1981 and returned to 10,000 of McDonald's 14,000 U.S. locations in 2019 before becoming a nationwide sandwich again in 2020 for the first time since 2012 according to the fast food restaurant. Last year, the sandwich appeared on the menu for a limited-time basis. It's a permanent menu item at McDonald's restaurants in Germany and Luxembourg.

Mike Bullington, the senior archives manager for McDonald’s, said in a news release last year that the McRib was designed to be "enjoyed during the colder seasons."

Aerosmith has announced the rescheduled dates for the “Peace Out” farewell tour, which was abruptly postponed last September because of singer Steven Tyler ‘s ongoing vocal cord and larynx problems.

The singer’s doctor said last year that Tyler, “in addition to the damage to his vocal cords, fractured his larynx, which requires ongoing care. He is receiving the best medical treatment available to ensure his recovery is swift, but given the nature of a fracture, he is being told patience is essential.”
