Set sail in search of Dragons

The Komodo Expedition is a seven-night adventure through the pristine wilderness and waters of Indonesia’s Komodo National Park. Encounter antediluvian creatures unchanged since prehistoric times on a visit to the only two islands in the world where the infamous Komodo dragon can still be found.

Cruise through the Nusa Tenggara Archipelago to dive and snorkel some of the world’s most biologically diverse and widely acclaimed underwater sites. This expedition truly unveils a forgotten Eden, on land and sea.

Amandira

A forgotten Eden

From the colourful reefs of Tatawa Island to the enchanting hues of Komodo’s Pink Beach, this is a region of pristine natural beauty. Isolated coves, countless bays and tropical islets compete for attention with white sand beaches, mangroves, lagoons and remarkable limestone formations, not to mention the wildlife.

Rinca Island and the reefs of Sabayor

Home to astonishing wildlife, Rinca Island also offers exciting trekking routes with spectacular views. Back onboard Amandira, charter a course for Sabayor where multi-hued reefs are visited by white tip reef sharks, huge Napolean wrasse, turtles, manta rays and schools of tropical fish.

Unparalleled scuba diving and snorkelling

Dive in the reefs surrounding Satonda Island and kayak under the bat-filled trees fringing a volcanic lake. Wake up to the reefs of Batu Monchu Bay, frequented by manta rays and dolphins. Experience the magnificent underwater sea mounds of Crystal and Castle Rocks at Gili Lawa Laut and snorkel with manta rays at Makassar.

⭐ TRAVELIST INSIGHT: I totally wish I had found an article like this before I toured Komodo Island because I spent more than a month figuring out all this information myself since it was my first live-aboard boat trip in Indonesia. I hope this helps you out too!

DISCLAIMER: Due to my budget (or lack thereof) I have unfortunately not been able to test every single tour offered to the Komodo Islands, however, I’ve sourced information from guests’ first-hand experiences, TripAdvisor reviews, and MY OWN personal experiences. Images of the boat and interiors depicted are a combination of my own as well as images sent from the various tour companies (they have been enhanced for aesthetic purposes of the blog. I hope this helps to make your decision on your Komodo tour package.

Open versus Private Trip

komodo dragon cruise

OPEN : (SHARING) You’re on a trip with other people in a group you don’t know i.e.: sharing the same boat

PRIVATE : Exclusive boat for yourself and/or your group

Types of Boat

In research of tours to Indonesia’s Komodo islands, you’ll find several offerings but they do not always specify which type of boat is being used.

It is important to know the type of boat being used as this will give you an indication of the amenities and number of people, type of cabins, and size of the boat you’ll travel and sleep within. The types are listed below:

Standard Boat (with and without A/C)

komodo dragon cruise

STANDARD BOAT WITHOUT AC: The standard boat is a smaller boat option with no air-conditioning and basic amenities (no hot water) , no private cabins (usually 8 to 12 people excluding crew). This can be used for an open or private trip.

STANDARD BOAT WITH AC: A smaller boat option with basic amenities (no hot water) and only sharing cabins (usually 8 to 12 people excluding crew). This can be used for an open or private trip.

Traditional Pinisi/Phinisi Boat

phinisi boat komodo island boat tour

TRADITIONAL PINISI BOAT: Has private and shared cabin options. All cabins have air conditioning. It usually hosts between a minimum of 12 people and a maximum of 22 people. This can also be used for open or private trips.

Luxury Boats/Yachts

Komodo Islands Boat tour luxury yacht option

LUXURY BOAT/ YACHTS: These are often used for private tours of small groups and will have every amenity you could ask for along with stunning décor. I will not delve too much into this option as there are websites that have plenty of information about what is on offer on their own websites with this Komodo tour package.

Cabins: Private/ Shared/ No cabin

This is super important when travelling to Komodo Dragon Islands, especially because, unlike a hotel, there’s a finite number of rooms and it’s not like you can just move to another if you’re unhappy . There is no front desk or concierge to ring if you need something urgently.

You need to know what you’re getting in your Komodo trip BEFORE you get on the boat.

The cabin options will depend on the type of boat that’s used, but generally, there are two (but sometimes three) options: private or shared cabins.

Private Cabins

komodo dragon cruise

I’m unfortunately no longer in the backpacking stage of my life (or fortunately? Lol I’m not sure) , so my preference was a private cabin and private bathroom. On certain boats you will also find private cabins without a private bathroom, so you’ll need to make sure your Komodo package tour boat includes this.

Shared Cabins

Shared cabins are great if you’re travelling as a group or are keen to make friends and don’t mind sharing your space, but let me just say – space is a commodity on a boat!

If you’re a small backpack type-of-person it’ll be super easy to handle a shared cabin, but considering cabins are usually for a maximum of 4 or 6 people, that’s a lot of people !

komodo dragon cruise

Even if you’re an easy-going hostel frequenting traveller a shared cabin still is a lot smaller than most dormitories so it’s great if you’re with people you know already cause not everybody is considerate of other’s space.

sleeping on deck komodo islands boat tour

I’ve seen on a couple of Komodo tour packages (mainly the larger boats) , that there is the option to sleep on deck! This is obviously an option for the very low-maintenance traveller that’s truly willing to embrace the ocean boat vibe! #decklife

It’s really a lovely option for the carefree traveller that doesn’t need the bells and whistles of an actual room and is simply happy embracing true boat life and sleeping below the stars.

The unfortunate downfall of this is that they obviously have nowhere to leave their belongings which obliviously has its security issues, nor have the option for any privacy.

Inside Cabin Amenities

On a boat, most bathroom amenities are basic unless you’re on a luxury yacht.

Private or Shared Bathroom

komodo dragon cruise

Many people do have a preference for a private bathroom so this can be a major decision-maker in the Komodo boat tour choosing process.

The Pinisi boat will have a basic shower system, a sink with or without running water, and a toilet.

The bathroom is usually of the Asian style which we usually call a wet room.

komodo dragon cruise

A wet room is basically where the shower, toilet, and sink are all in the same space, and whilst showering your toilet will also get wet.

If you’re looking for a great bathroom then you’re definitely going to need to go the luxury or yacht option!

Toilet Type

An important question would be to ask if they have an Asian (squat) toilet or a western-style toilet .

komodo dragon cruise

The water on the boat also usually won’t be drinkable, so make sure you have drinking water to brush your teeth but this is often provided in your Komodo island tour package s.

So this is definitely a luxury to find on a boat . There is often no hot water on the standard boats, On the Pinisi there sometimes will be hot water, on the luxury boats there will be hot water.

Given the tropical nature and humidity of Indonesia, you definitely think that needing hot water wouldn’t be a necessity and it isn’t .

Although being out on the ocean, the cooler sea breeze is prevalent and after a long day of swimming, beach lounging, and hiking, it’s nice to come back to a warm shower but it really isn’t necessary.

PERSONAL EXPERIENCE: The Phinisi boat we had, actually said that there wouldn’t be hot water and when we opened the shower and had warm water which was a welcome surprise – so the moral of the story is: Keep your expectations low!

Air Conditioning

Phinisi Boat Private wooden cabin with double bed and AC used for Komodo Islands boat tours

A nice plus for the tour to Komodo National Park is for the cabin to have air conditioning! The space is pretty small so it’s great to have some air circulation even if the windows are open , the breeze doesn’t always get in.

Even if it’s just a wall-mounted fan it’s a great bonus to have in a room and especially so if you’re in a shared cabin.

Electricity and Plug Points

In this digital age, most people can’t go without electricity for a day. As we need electricity to keep the lights on, charge our phones, cameras, power banks, etc.

The boat runs on a generator system and because of this, most boats will turn the electricity off during the day. The electricity will usually be on in the evenings to allow you to charge your devices and use the A/C or fans to sleep and use the light in the cabin etc.

We really did not need to use electricity at all during the day because we were out and when travelling between islands we were on the deck relaxing anyway.

Charging your items during the night works perfectly or you could take the time to completely unplug from the world.

📱MOBILE NETWORK INSIGHT📶

When travelling through Komodo National Park, you will have phone signal access as there are many cellular towers. Certain mobile network providers work better in Komodo National Park. I recommend Telkomsel , as the Indosat network did not work in Labuan Bajo during my trip.

Now you’re probably wondering why the heck would this have anything to do with why you should choose a Komodo boat trip?

Well, it matters for several reasons on your sailing Komodo trip.

The more people you have on the boat trip to Komodo Island, the more mouths there are to feed.

komodo dragon cruise

Unfortunately, when sharing your accommodations with others (especially people you don’t know) not everyone is courteous to other people when it comes to food and portion sizes.

TRAVELIST INSIGHTS: I’ve heard of experiences on the larger boats where some guests actually did not have lunch or dinner on certain occasions due to guests earlier in the queue literally taking everything and not leaving enough for the others. It got so bad that people would have to queue up for dinner earlier than necessary to ensure they got a decent meal!

komodo dragon cruise

We all know that when a boat sets sail for the trip, there’s a limited amount of rations but they cater for ‘X’ number of guests.

⭐ PERSONAL OPINION: For me, that’s really sad to hear. I think when you’re on a shared trip, you need to be accountable for yourself and the amount you eat and not treat the dinner table as your free for all buffet unless everyone has had a chance to eat.

The other reason why the number of guests on board is something to consider is when you’re out on activities. When it’s not a private tour, you need to be accommodating of the others on your trips when you’re going out for activities.

You often have to wait for the group before you can go head etc. or wait for everyone to be ready before you can depart.

Not everyone also enjoys the same activities.

komodo dragon cruise

The trip is pretty diverse in the sense that there’s a bit of hiking, beach lounging, snorkelling, swimming, etc and not everyone enjoys this.

So you might actually luck out when some people opt to stay on board for some activities whilst the other of the group gets a bit more attention.

It may be one of the reasons why you choose a private trip over an open trip.

Couple going snorkeling on Komodo Islands boat tour at Manta Point in Komodo National Park

In the same breath , it’s great to meet other people and share the magical experience with others, what’s also lovely is that it’s not only foreigners you’ll find on this trip. Komodo islands are something that many locals still want to experience.

This was an absolute must for me!

An area with bean bags to relax and watch the sunset or lounge whilst travelling between islands is literally the epitome of boat living!

komodo dragon cruise

Not all Komodo tours have this area to chill whilst travelling.

I think it’s quintessential to the Komodo islands cruise experience. Sunset, some good music from a wireless Bluetooth speaker, and cold drink = perfect tropical vacay!

Allowances: Bringing onboard Alcohol and Snacks

Although one may think you simply have the right to do so , it’s highly recommended to ask first that you can bring on board your own alcohol or snacks.

Being that Indonesia is a predominantly Muslim country, alcohol is not consumed by the majority of the population.

As a level of respect, it’s only courteous to ask if you can bring alcohol on board.

In saying that DON’T GO OVERBOARD – LITERALLY AND FIGURATIVELY!

Drink in moderation and don’t be an annoyance or inconvenience to others if you are on a shared/open trip.

komodo dragon cruise

TRAVELIST TIP:  If you’re coming from Jakarta or Bali, don’t pack your alcohol with you. Thankfully the supermarkets in Labuan Bajo are well-stocked with alcoholic options! Stock up on a few beers or wine for the trip at Roxy-mart or the Indomaret, there are plenty of little supermarkets across from the port landing which you can use to buy last-minute items.

Destinations Visited: Komodo Islands Must-See Attractions

These are the must-see attractions on your Komodo Islands Boat Tour, also check them out on the Komodo Island map to make sure it’s included in your Komodo island trip!

Komodo Spotting at Rinca Island

komodo dragon cruise

Rinca Island is also known as Komodo Dragon Island where you will find the conservation where the Komodo island dragons roam freely! As much as this is the main attraction of your Komodo trip, not everyone actually does this trip for the day Komodo dragon tour as you’ll see below, there are many other beautiful destinations on the trip.

Instagram-worthy Pink Beach

komodo dragon cruise

No, your eyes don’t deceive you , Komodo Island Pink Beach is an actual thing! This is not photo-shopped! The sand of Komodo Island’s Pink Beach gets its hue from thousands of broken coral pieces, shells, and calcium carbonate materials left behind by foraminifera.

Snorkelling with Manta Rays at Manta Point

snorkelling with manta rays on a komodo islands boat tour

Manta Rays , not to be confused with Sting Rays , are the gentle docile, and harmless floating creatures of the sea. Swimming with mantas was a bucket list activity that I never thought I’d ever had the opportunity to do. Depending on your season and time of day visiting will depend on how many you’re able to see.

PERSONAL EXPERIENCE : We visited during the month of October. At the time of our trip and time heading to manta point, we saw plenty of manta rays. Our guide said that this had been the most they had seen at one time all year . We visited between 2 and 3 pm in the afternoon. It was honestly one of the greatest experiences of my entire life. I hope that you get that same experience too .

Breathtaking Colours and Views at Kelor Island

A short sand dune-ish walk to the top, but Wowza! The shades of blues and that mountain landscape are a wondrous feast for the eyes.

Snorkelling and Turtle spotting at Siaba

komodo dragon cruise

The place where you may be able to spot some elusive turtles! Unlike manta’s or Finding Nemo they don’t all swim together so seeing one or two is definitely a treat.

Flight of the Flying Foxes at Sunset from Kalong Island

komodo dragon cruise

I can honestly say I’ve never seen anything like this in my entire life. At sunset, the flying foxes (which I confused for bats initially) leave the island to hunt for food.

The evening starts with you seeing a few dots leave the island and gradually those few dots become hundreds, then thousands. It was absolutely beautiful. It’s an amazing sight to see along with the dusky pink sunset views.

This one is something you’re unfortunately not going to get a straight answer on because it will COMPLETELY DEPEND on the boat and tour package you choose.

The price person can range anything from IDR 2 000 000 to IDR 20 000 000+ per person.

What I would suggest is being clear on what you are getting with your tour package, i.e.: the amenities listed above, Komodo National Park entrance fees, any other additional fees, etc.

PERSONAL EXPERIENCE: At the time of booking our trip which was a 3 day 2-night liveaboard Pinisi boat with a private cabin (for 2 people- double bed), private bathroom, 3 meals a day, drinking water, and drop off at the airport we paid IDR 4 500 000 per person. This excluded flights to Labuan Bajo, accommodation before the boat trip and the Komodo National Park entry fees. This really was a bargain so it’s likely these prices have increased significantly.

⭐ SIDENOTE: We had priced this package from several providers and all pricing was along a similar line for what we were getting at the time.

Komodo Islands Boat Tour Recommendations

There will be many Komodo trips on offer. It will depend on whether you’re looking for a Komodo Island tour package, a trip from Labuan Bajo to Komodo island, a Komodo Flores tour, or Bali to Komodo tours etc. Regardless, the information above will help in choosing your Komodo Boat trips.

Where Is Komodo Island

Komodo Islands are located in Flores, East Nusa Tenggara . So I can reach Komodo from Flores and not travel to Labuan Bajo? Yes, there are several Flores Komodo tours but you will find it’s easier to find a Komodo island tour from Labuan Bajo.

How to get to Komodo Island

So you’re dying to see a Komodo dragon, but not sure how to get there? I recommend a Komodo boat trip from Labuan Bajo. Labuan Bajo is the seaside town from which most Komodo island tours depart. Check out the Komodo Islands map for location reference.

Flights to Komodo island are mainly from bigger cities like Jakarta, Bali, and Lombok . The is also an option to do a Lombok to Komodo boat trip. The Komodo island tour from Lombok however only leaves from a certain cit y so most find it easier to leave from Labuan Bajo if they’re flying in from Jakarta or Bali .

When I first visited Labuan Bajo, I travelled from Jakarta. Unfortunately, pre-covid I couldn’t find any direct flights from Jakarta (or I couldn’t find any :/) but now thankfully there are!!!

⭐ PERSONAL EXPERIENCE: From Bali to Komodo Islands is an easy flight. I suggest flying from Bali to Komodo airport in Labuan Bajo. We flew from Jakarta and then to the Komodo islands from Bali as a transit . The Bali to Komodo island flight time is 1 hour.

Can you do a Komodo tour from Bali? Yes. Try this tour to Komodo Island from Bali by Viator

Best Time to Visit Komodo Island

Komodo National Park tours take place mainly during the dry season in Indonesia which is April to November. We visited the Komodo National Park islands in October.

Komodo Island Weather

The weather of the Komodo Islands is slightly cooler than the humidity you’ll find in Java, Indonesia. Temperatures are still very warm, despite the ocean breeze. Light airy quick-dry clothing is recommended.

Komodo Islands Boat Tour FAQ

For the above attractions of Komodo, Komodo dragons, snorkelling, island hopping, etc we managed to see everything in a 3-day 2-night tour.

The Komodo Island closure was announced in 2019, however, after consideration, the announcement was amended to reflect that the Komodo National Park will only allow a limited number of guests per year.

Unfortunately no , there are no hotels or accommodation on Komodo island. There are two options. Stay on the boat called known as Komodo liveaboard tour or do a one-day trip from Labuan Bajo meaning you leave in the morning and return to shore at night to stay in your hotel.

Not sure how to get to Komodo Island from Bali? Well, yes you can do a Komodo island tour from Bali , but usually, this will still involve you flying to Labuan Bajo to start the tour there and will just include the airfare for the flights. Check this one out from Viator. Most Komodo island trips leave from Labuan Bajo.

Thank you so much for sharing this post. I am planning to travel to Komodo Islands. Because I don’t know much information, your article has helped me a lot. All questions I can find answers in your post.

So glad to hear you found it useful 🙂

Dear Kily, this is one of the best info web from Komodo island, absolutey extraordinary. Living in a volcanic island on the other side of the planet, it has been very pleasant to read and enjoy the pictures and your comments. I,m preparing my winter trip to Indonesia. I will keep you in mind Best regards Patricio

Dear Kaylini, we’re a family of 4 from Portugal, preparing our visit in August. Can’t wait 🙂 We want to thank you for your wonderful blog and for sharing your experience. This is SO useful for anyone preparing their visit! One question though, is if you do recommend the Klook operator. We’re almost going ahead with it, but always good to hear from someone who already tried. Thanks again ! Claudia & Jose

Hi, which company did you use for your 3D2N trip? 🙂

Hi Kaylini, many thanks. Your post is well done, super detailed and very helpful !!!

However I remain confused about the islands referred to as Komodo Islands ? Is it Rinca Island, Komodo Island or both ? And which one is best to get a chance to observe Komodos ?

I am looking a 3D-2N open trip with a private cabin for a family of four. Should I expect the tour to visit both Rinca and Komodo (ie National Park) islands ?

And is there by chance a couple local travel agencies that you would recommend ? Which one did you use ?

Thank you ! Alex

Thanks, this is super helpful, also for how to get there from Bali. Great article!

Thank you so much for this. Super helpful. I feel like I have a different plan in mind. My friend and I don’t want to stay on the boat. We’d like to take a boat out for the day from Labuan Bajo and only see a couple of sites then repeat the next day. Is this a good or viable option? We don’t like the crowd of tours and we don’t dive or snorkel.

Hi Jasmine! Im so happy that you found the article helpful! I totally understand. We had a number of people on our boat tri that didnt snorkel either. The day trip option is defiitely viable. There are a number of day trip options available that still give you the same opportunity to see the Komodo Islands sights. you might find this article helpful: https://www.thecuratedtravelist.com/komodo-island-tours/ my first two options are recommended day tours. These tours might be worth looking at

What tour did you pick?

Hi Heather, We did the 3D2N multiday tour boat trip

Great post thank you for all the helpful info. Do you recommend booking in advance for the overnight (3/4 days) boat tour or can I turn up to Labuan Bajo and book for the day after? Thank you!

Hi Jess! Thanks so much for the comment, We booked in advance to guarantee we got a boat with a private cabin and bathroom. For me, it depends on what type of boat youre going with. If its a open/sharing trip then you might be ok with booking once you arrive in Labuan Bajo, but if youre looking for a private boat or a private cabin on a sharing boat then you’ll definitely need to book a little bit ahead of time.

I forgot to say we are looking at visiting in July/August.

Yay, thats a great time to visit. See me prev comment regarding the booking 🙂

Super helpful. Thank you

Thanks Verity, Glad you found it useful 🙂

Small Ship Cruises in Komodo

Even within Indonesia, Komodo cruises offer a series of truly unique experiences, from its arid climate and landscape to its near-mythical wildlife. Unlike the lush, verdant islands of Bali and Lombok, Komodo island is dry and hilly, covered in savannah-like brush, its shores surrounded by rough, fast-flowing currents and riptides, giving it a decidedly inhospitable allure, though a perfect setting for its most famous resident: the Komodo dragon. Despite its somewhat forbidding appearance, Komodo is home to a small village of hardy fisherman and, in addition to the well-known lizards, Komodo cruises feature encounters with an enormous variety of bird species, large mammals and marine life.

Top things to do and see in Komodo

Komodo is best known for its famous lizards, but it also offers a landscape that is unique among the islands of Indonesia, the opportunity to explore some of the most beautiful reefs in the world and encounters with local villagers.

Komodo National Park covers over 1700 square kilometres and includes the islands of Kom0do, Rinca and Padar, in addition to dozens of other smaller islands. The area was made a national park in 1980 and, in 1991, was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site. With a guide, visitors can trek through the park’s dry and rugged landscape, watching for the famed Komodo dragons, the largest lizards in the world. The park is also home to large mammals, such as Timor deer, pigs and wild buffalo, as well as over 150 species of birds, including the sulfur-crested cockatoo, jungle chickens, and the white-breasted sea eagle, while its reefs are practically bursting with marine life, from clownfish and parrotfish to the occasional sea turtle and manta ray.

The Komodo Dragons are without a doubt the highlight of any sailing trip to Komodo. The largest lizards in the world, Komodo dragons can grow to three meters and over 200 pounds and can eat half their body weight in a single meal. The dragons mainly eat large mammals, such as goats, pigs and deer. Though typically seen lounging in the sun, these beasts have been known to outrun a human. Visitors on Komodo cruises including both Komodo and Rinca will have two opportunities to spot the lizards. There are currently 1700 dragons on the island of Komodo, with another 2000 on Rinca, with very few on Padar.

Pentai Merah , or “red beach”, is so named for the pinkish hue of its sands, due to the presence of red coral particles. Located on the shores of Komodo Island, Pentai Merah is a perfect spot to relax after encounters with the island’s dragons! The beach is a gateway to many of the island’s water activities, including swimming, kayaking and paddle boarding. The island is also located in the midst of the so-called Coral Triangle, known as one of the hottest snorkelling spots in the world. Slip beneath the waves and you’ll encounter a magical world of coral and sea creatures, including seahorses, snake eels and manta rays.

Villages are present on the islands of Komodo and Rinca, and grant visitors on Indonesia luxury cruises the opportunity to interact with the only people in the world to live among dragons! Many of the homes in the fishing village of Kampung Komodo, on the island of Komodo, are built on stilts to keep out of reach of curious dragons. Visitors to the village can buy handmade crafts and enjoy an intimate look into the lives of the locals.

Top Tips for visiting Komodo

  • If you have one, bring an underwater camera to capture the underwater universe along the reefs of Komodo.
  • Komodo cruises include a fair amount of trekking, so wear good walking shoes. Given that the island is also very dry, with little shade, bring plenty of sunblock and water.
  • Though not included on all Komodo cruises, a visit to Padar Island includes trekking to the top of one of its many low peaks. Bring a camera to capture panoramic views of the surrounding islands of the East Nusa Tenggara region.
  • Note that Komodo National Park is a smoke-free zone.

Best time to cruise Komodo

There is no best time to visit Komodo as it is a year-round destination. The island is the driest area in Indonesia, thanks to warm dry winds coming in from Australia. Despite this, it is essential to plan ahead as the island still has its rainy season.

Komodo in April to November is the dry season when the weather is very arid and temperatures can reach 43 degrees Celsius (110 degrees Fahrenheit).

The rainy season on Komodo is from December to March, shorter than on other islands and with less rain per day. Komodo in January and February are the wettest months.

Note that Komodo dragon mating season is from July to August, with the eggs hatching the following April to May.

Where do Komodo cruises depart from?

Most Indonesian adventure cruises to Komodo leave either from Labuan Bajo on Flores, or Amed or Padang Bai (also known as Padangbai or Padang Bay) on Bali.

If your small boat cruise leaves from Bali , you will fly into the Ngurah Rai International Airport, also known as Denpasar International Airport, on Bali, and likely make your way to the resort town of Sanur, a popular meeting spot for Indonesia cruise operators approximately 20 minutes from the airport by Blue Bird Taxi. From Sanur, a shuttle will take you to Amed or Padang Bai, approximately two hours northeast of Sanur.

If your Komodo cruise departs from Labuan Bajo, you will still fly into Ngurah Rai International Airport and fly from Bali to Flores to begin your cruise.

Ngurah Rai International Airport is a major hub for flights within Indonesia and all of Southeast Asia. It is serviced by most major airlines.

Private Boat Trip Komodo Cruise

Flexible tours.

Komodo intinerary

Trip of 3 days 2 nights

Day 1. cruising komodo (lunch and dinner).

Around 08.30 we wait for you at the hotel lobby in Labuan Bajo (Flores) to take you to the pier. The first stop is on the island of Kanawa where you can walk along its beach and enjoy snorkeling. If you prefer, you can go to visit Seraya and Sabolo , for good snorkel too. Afterwards, you will go sailing to see thousands of bats that come out at sunset in search of their dinner. The pink color sky, turns a bit black with all the bats that undertake their flight to other islands looking for fruit trees. Night at Traditional boat

DAY 2. KOMODO (breakfast, lunch and dinner)

Around 05.30-06.00 you will have the breakfast and the boat will go to Komodo where you can do a trekking to discover the island and the dragons . After that, you will go to Manta Point , where you can normally see Mantas. The next stop is going to be Pink Beach , where you can enjoy the pink sand. Tonight, you will sleep in Padar. Night at Traditional boat

DIA 3. COMING BACK TO LABUAN BAJO (Breakfast)

After breakfast you will hick Padar Island to see the famous view of the 3 beaches. After, you can make the last swim in the area before going back to Labuan Bajo.

  • All the meals detailed at the itinerary.
  • Water, soft drink and juice in the morning.
  • Transfers to the port from airport/hotel.
  • Snorkel equipment.
  • English or Spanish speaking guide
  • Availability to practice diving (Extra: $210 for 3 dives or $187 for 2 dives)

Our itinerary is flexible. We adapt the route to your needs.

Diving in komodo.

Combine the best diving with the essential visits to the Komodo National Park

Our idea is combine the best diving with the essential visits to the Komodo National Park, but we need to explain that it is a lifeaboard , with a minimum of 3 days that is not 100% focused on diving, but rather a mixture of both.

Our boat is built in 2018, has a length of 29m and consists of only 2 rooms and a suite with terrace. The days of travel and the areas to visit or to dive, are variable to suit the client, so when you contact us, we will agree itineraries and days, as we are fully adaptable.

This type of trip, is oriented to couples or groups of friends not very big, since the maximum number of people for life on board is 6. Our boat is perfect for a couple in which one of them is a diver and the other one no or up to 6 specializes divers. This option is much cheaper than a liveaboard

Contact us, explain your ideas and for sure we can make them come true.

Rutas is the best option. I recommend it. Excellent price, quality and human warmth. I would choose them one and a thousand times more.

Traveler opinion about Rutas Indonesia

Nuria Heyd September 2017, Madrid

We spend our honeymoon in Indonesia, visiting Bali, Java, Gili Trawangan, Komodo and Nusa Penida. The truth is, we had an amazing time. The experience with Clara was great. A super nice girl who helped me a lot choosing sites and hotels. I would not hesitate to go with them on another trip. An excellent experience.

Traveler opinion about Rutas Indonesia

Irene, Lola y Esther de Gaspar june 2017, Barcelona

The trip was very well organized, especially for us, support of the local guides, Dedi in Bali and Dafry in Komodo was great, they have been aware of any need and concern that has arisen and have shown us places, customs. The two days by boat are highly recommended, the boat crew great. Many thanks to Rutas Indonesia (Fran and Mikael for the help in the organization). I'm sure we will repeat!!!

Traveler opinion about Rutas Indonesia

We are a couple with an 11-year-old girl who just returned from a 17-day trip through Indonesia. The experience with Rutas Indonesia, highly recommended. That everything works like a clock in this type of travel is surprising. The phone to contact Clara at any time gives a lot of peace of mind.

What to do in Komodo?

An unforgettable experience

Visit Komodo dragons

In the landscapes of the volcanic islands of Flores you will find many exotic plants and animals. The most famous species is the Komodo dragon, the largest lizard in the world and you can only see in this small part of the planet.

Trekking in Komodo

The trekking is definitely one of the best things we can offer you in the Komodo Islands to contemplate the natural beauty from the top of the mountains to the bottom of the sea. You will have the opportunity to see impressive landscapes and make a healthy and regenerating hike.

Snorkeling or diving in Komodo

A perfect place to swim with sea turtles and the Manta Rays in their natural habitat and meet curious giant fish. The natural park of Komodo is huge and there are different dive sites that are simply the doors of a wonderful world full of amazing creatures.

Lovely and secret beaches

Among the small islands and bays of the Komodo natural park there are beaches for all tastes. Among them is a surprising beach where its sand is pink, the Pink Beach. Its unique color is caused by the mixture of fine white sand with small pieces of red coral brought by the waves.

See the bats at sunset

We take you to see the dances of thousands of bats that come out of their caves at sunset to look for food. A surprising spectacle of nature that is repeated every day and mixed with the beauty of the warm colors of the sky when the sun goes down.

Enjoy the boat

At the traditional Phinisi boat you will have all the amenities that you need to spend one or nights. Also, you will enjoy our chef delights and relax on the deck reserved only for you.

No myth here, real dragons with forked tongues run about the island in search of prey and carrion. One of three major islands making up Komodo National Park and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Komodo is the natural habitat of the Komodo dragon, a prehistoric-looking lizard up to 10 feet long. If you're leery of these reptiles, the ecologically diverse waters around the island provide superb diving and snorkelling and are home to graceful manta rays, dolphins and even seahorses.

Guide to Taking a 3-Day Komodo Islands Boat Tour from Flores

' src=

Taking a Komodo Island-Hopping Boat Tour is the best activity you can do on any trip to Indonesia. Typically visited on multi-day tours through the Komodo Islands Archipelago, Komodo Cruises do not set sail directly from Bali, but from the islands of Flores and Lombok. You need at least 3-days to visit the Komodos, and many travelers (including myself) consider it the highlight of their trip to Bali & Indonesia – Trust me, the Komodos are well worth visiting!

✔️ Essential Information

  • 💵 Price: Around $550 per person private room / $250 pp dorm.
  • 📍 Location: Boats sail to/from Lombok and Labuan Bajo, Flores
  • ⏳ Duration: Most tours are 3 days / 2 nights.
  • 👉 Note! Tours don’t run from January-March (Rainy Season)
  • 🍺 All-inclusive , except for alcohol
  • ✈️ Getting to Flores from Bali: 1-hour flight
  • 🏆 Best tour company: I recommend Wanua Adventure

All About Komodo National Park

Komodo National Park is a famous UNESCO world heritage site in Indonesia that became popular around 10 years ago with travelers looking to go beyond Bali to find pristine beaches and adventure. Komodo National Park is composed of almost  thirty separate islands,  some huge and some  super tiny.

Each island in Komodo is incredibly distinct and worth a visit, and while you could just pick one island and stay as there are a few Resorts in Komodo National Park, most people choose to go “island hopping” and stay overnight on a boat instead.

✔️ Quick Guide – Different Cruise Types

Is komodo national park closing.

🚨 UPDATE! 🚨 The Indonesian government has decided to scrap the idea to raise prices to Komodo Island! The entrance fee remains 550K ($35) for foreigners and 250K ($16) for Indonesians!

There have been some issues in the past few years about the future of tourism in Komodo National Park. In 2019 Nine men were arrested for  stealing and trafficking Komodo Dragons  to sell overseas, which is both highly illegal and  terrible  for the natural Komodo Dragon population. The Indonesian government first planned to completely shut down Komodo Island as a response, and the locals who live off of the tourism generated by the park protested. The new plan is to raise the cost of entrance to Komodo National Park from what it is now, around 550K ($35) for foreigners, and 250K ($16) for Indonesians, to around 3.75 million Rupiah ($244).

Locals from Labuan Bajo and the Komodo Islands who depend on tourism have been actively protesting the price hike, as they see it as a direct attack on their economy – as of right now, we’ll just have to wait and see what happens! What does seem certain at this time is that even if they increase the admission price to Komodo National Park, the Indonesian government seems to have lost interest in closing the islands for tourism completely.

Where Is Komodo Island Located?

komodo dragon cruise

Komodo Island is located in Komodo National Park, which is a cluster of islands off the coast of Flores. Flores is an island in the Indonesian Archipelago that belongs to the East Nusa Tenggara Province. You can see on the map that Komodo & Flores are far east of the island of Bali, where most travelers fly. The islands of Lombok and Sumbawa lie between Bali and Komodo National Park, making overland transport between the two islands difficult.

How To Get To Komodo From Bali

You cannot fly directly from Bali to Komodo, and all travelers need to arrange transportation to Labuan Bajo, Flores, first. Labuan Bajo is also called the “Gateway to the Komodos” because it’s the port city all the cruises embark from. The only way to get from Bali to Labuan Bajo is by taking a short flight from Bali’s Denpasar Airport. These flights run multiple times a day, take around 1-hour, and usually cost $30-50 each way. 👉 Read my more detailed guide on how to get to/from Bali to the Komodos

Best Time To Visit Komodo National Park

Indonesia doesn’t have winter, spring, summer, and fall – instead, they only have two seasons: the dry and the wet. You’ll want to visit Komodo National Park during the dry season which stretches from April – to October. I sailed in Komodo at the beginning of the wet season in November and didn’t have any problems with the weather personally, but the people who sailed the weekend before me in mid-November had it rain the whole weekend!  So it’s better to go in the dry season if you can.

Do You Need A Tour To Visit Komodo?

YES – You 100% need a tour to enter Komodo National Park. It’s actually  illegal  to visit the Komodo Islands without a guide, plus they can only be accessed via boat. So, it’s not a DIY kind of tourist location and you need a tour.

Is Komodo worth visiting from Bali?

Komodo National Park is not an  easy  place to visit from Bali, since you need multiple days to explore the Komodo Islands + you have to take a short flight to Flores. But, in my personal opinion, it’s one of the most worthwhile things you can do in Indonesia.

You can book your Komodo boat tour online through  Klook , which is a popular tour provider in Indonesia that accepts foreign credit cards. These tours can be “Open Tours” which means you’re just booking a spot. Usually, the open tours have up to 12 passengers on a boat. Or, you can book a Private Boat  tour where you charter the entire boat and crew for larger groups or families. As a solo traveler, I just booked a spot on an Open Tour. You have the option to get a room with bunk beds, usually a room of four, or a private room for a higher fee.

💰 Price of a Komodo Cruise: Komodo boat tours aren’t fixed rates and vary in price by the type of boat and room you book. My Komodo Cruise was only around $250 per person, but it was for a bed in a bunk-bed room. For a private cabin expect prices to be around $400-500 per person. This is the cheapest tour I’ve found , it’s less than $200 for three days.

💡 Tip: You need to bring cash to pay the entrance fee to Komodo National Park – It’s currently 550K Indonesian Rupiah ($35) per person.

🚨 Note: Most of the tour companies related to Komodo Cruises are just travel agents that work with independent boat owners – So make sure you see photos of the actual boat you’ll be staying on before you book!

12 Things You Can Do on a Komodo Boat Tour

1. get up close with the komodo dragons.

I’m going to be completely honest, seeing the Komodo Dragons on the eponymous Komodo Island was the least impressive part of visiting Komodo National Park . The Komodo Dragons are amazing animals that are deadly hunters with venomous saliva lethal to humans. That being said, the reason the island is open for tourism despite these deadly animals is because the locals feed the Komodos. Since the dragons are reptiles, most of their energy is spent on digesting – If you’re lucky, you’ll see one walking on the beach. But more likely than not, the Komodos will be sleeping off their big meals while tourists get their photos taken by their guides in front of them.

2. Visit the Famous Pink-Sand Beach

Komodo’s Pink Beach gets its candy-hued sand from the ground-up coral. The pink color is made bolder when it’s wet, so you’ll find the most beautiful pink sand at the ocean’s edge. In addition to being pink, I found Pink Beach was all-around one of the nicest beaches I’ve visited in Indonesia. There’s great snorkeling off the coast of the beach, and the white/pink sand coupled with  impossibly blue  water made for the perfect setting.

3. Go Kayaking At Pink Beach

Kayaking at Pink Beach was just perfect. There was no tide on the crystal-clear blue water, making it super easy for us to explore the whole bay. We kayaked around all the boats docked at Pink Beach and the photographer on our tour took some  gorgeous  drone shots of us while we were out having fun that I’ll treasure for the rest of my life <3.

4. Swim With The Giant Manta Rays (!!!!) At Manta Point

When we set off to do this excursion on the second day, the guides were trying to prepare us from disappointment in case there weren’t any mantas around. They are wild animals after all, and while the tour operators know their migration patterns it’s not a 100% guarantee you will see them. I’m happy to report that this experience completely surpassed my expectations. I was swimming along with at least 10 giant manta rays in an ocean corridor where they flock.

komodo dragon cruise

Have you ever seen Finding Nemo? That movie was one of my favorites as a kid – there’s one scene where the main character Nemo and his little friends are off to school, and the “school bus” is a giant Manta Ray where all the little fish hop on. One of the coolest things to see was that this scene from the movie was based on real life! There were a ton of tiny little fish swimming under the Giant Manta Rays in Komodo National Park – just like in the movie! (Although it was too far for me to see if any of them were Clown Fish, like Nemo).

🚩 Ethical Issues  – The Manta Rays at Manta Point in Komodo National Park aren’t fed, and you’re observing them from a good 10-20 foot distance, so   swimming with the Manta Rays was an ethical animal encounter.

5. Climb to the Viewpoint at Padar Island for Sunrise/Sunset

The viewpoint at Padar Island is quickly becoming one of the most iconic photo spots in Indonesia. You’ll need to complete a 20- to 30-minute staircase hike to reach the viewpoint. Most Komodo boat tour operators schedule a stop at Padar Island either for sunrise or sunset, ensuring you get the best views of the island.

6. Visit Taka Makassar Island

Taka Makassar is technically a sandbar in the middle of the Komodo Sea, and it would be paradise – IF it weren’t for the 100 other people there when we went 😅. Our boat pulled up at the same time all the other tours did, so it was a bit too crowded to be enjoyable. But I’ve seen some photos from private tours to Taka Makassar that make it look like a deserted island.

7. Watch The Bats Make Their Sunset Migration At Kalong Island

Every day at sunset the bats fly out from Kalong Island, where they all nest as a herd, to go hunt for the night. It’s truly an  amazing  experience to watch the hoards of bats fly out into the sunset!

Around 6 PM you see the cruise ships, tiny fishing boats, and luxury Phinisis all dock to watch the migration. At first, the migration just looks like a flock of birds, then when you look closely you see the distinct outlines of the bat wings. While that sounds kind of intense, our guide told us that there are two types of bats on Kalong Island. There are large bats and teeny tiny ones. The large bats look scarier, but these are just harmless fruit bats.  It’s the tiny breed of bats on Kalong Island that actually drink blood (creepy!), but they never attack people, just animals.

💡  Note:  If you’re afraid of Bats, don’t worry! The boats are parked at a distance.

8. Spot Sea Turtles While Snorkeling <3

This isn’t so much an activity as just something you’ll run into if you spend time swimming around the Komodo Islands. The wildlife in Komodo National Park is so vibrant. However, even though on our last day on the Backpackers’ Boat we stopped off at “Turtle Point”, I had way better luck spotting sea turtles at the snorkel spots the second boat tour took us to. Our guide was great about pointing out wild sea turtles to us, I think we saw  three  (!!!) while snorkeling from Manta Ray Point to Taka Makassar Island.

Bioluminescent Plankton is just one of many things you can see in Komodo National Park in Indonesia on a Komodo Boat Tour.

9. Experience The Glowing Bioluminescence While Night Swimming

Again, this isn’t even a part of a Komodo Tour – it’s just another AMAZING thing you will experience in Komodo National Park! Some people on the tour asked if we could go night swimming since the boat was docked. The guide replied,  “Sure, but just so you know the water might glow”.

THE WATER MIGHT GLOW?!?!?

Our guide was  super  nonchalant about it but apparently, there’s a ton of bioluminescent algae in Komodo National Park that is very safe but makes the water and sand glow in the dark. I had experienced the bioluminescent algae in the  Gili Islands  a few years ago and didn’t even know it occurred outside the islands. If you’re lucky, you might be able to see it in Komodo!

10. Take Photos With Your Private Photographer!

One of the super-cool things about taking a more high-end Komodo cruise was that it included a private photographer who would take pictures of us on the tour.

💡 Tip: If you’re taking a nicer Komodo Boat Tour make sure it includes a photography service! Most of them do.

11. Hike To The View Point At Kelor Island

Kelor Island is home to another iconic viewpoint hike in the Komodos. Shorter than the hike at Padar Island, it should only take you 10 minutes to climb the dirt and rock steps leading to the lookout spot. Also at Kelor Island are some wonderful warungs where you can take a break from the sun and enjoy a Bintang beer or two (or three), and a small coral reef lies off the coast of the island. While we were snorkeling off of Kelor I saw many Parrot Fish, as well as a Barracuda!

a plate of crawfish and corn being served on a komodo boat tour. indonesia.

12. Eat Really Good Food!

The meals on the luxury Komodo Cruise I took from Labuan Bajo were all next-level. We had fresh fish, fruits, and vegetables, all presented and plated in a very high-end way. I was beyond impressed with the quality of food on the Luxury Komodo Cruise.

Quick Guide to Labuan Bajo

Labuan Bajo is the gateway to Komodo National Park where you will be starting or finishing your trip before flying back to Bali. Full disclosure, I was supposed to stay in Labuan Bajo for two days after my first Komodo Boat Tour ended, but I wound up staying  a whole month  because I fell in love with the town and the island of Flores! Labuan Bajo is a sleepy port city, but it’s a great break from the hustle of larger cities in Bali – plus there’s a ton to do from sailing Komodo to exploring the island of Flores overland.

🏨 Where to Stay In Labuan Bajo

Seaesta Komodo Hostel & Hotel is one of the best hotels and hostels to stay at in Labuan Bajo.

Labuan Bajo has become famous in recent years for having these  gorgeous  all-white Santorini-Inspired hotels. The best hotel in Labuan Bajo is Loccal Collection, but if you’re on a budget Seaesta Hotel & Hostel is also amazing!

Fresh fish is caught daily & grilled to order at the Labuan Bajo fish market.

Where To Eat In Labuan Bajo

After a lot of trial and error, my favorite cafe in Labuan Bajo (where I’m sitting and writing this post right now) is Bacarita Cafe. It’s in the center of town, kind of hidden above the Starbucks. They do great coffee, western, and Indonesian food, there’s wifi, and the prices are really good! I also loved the Labuan Bajo fish market come nightfall. Lots of fish vendors line up their stalls and you order whole fish, which they then grill or fry fresh to order and serve with rice and sambal. My favorite was the grilled squid!

Rangko Cave is a half hour outside of labuan Bajo, the town that you will be dropped off at after you finish your Komodo Islands Boat Tour.

Other Activities In Labuan Bajo & Flores

Visit Rangko Cave:  Rangko Cave is a half hour outside of the town of Labuan Bajo and a very memorable experience. It’s a salt-water cave so you can float without effort – Rangko Cave has  crystal-clear  blue water you can swim in, and the only way to get there is by taking a tiny boat from mainland Flores so you do need a tour to visit.

💡Tip:  In the afternoon, the sun aligns with Rangko Cave to light it up naturally from within. Amazing, right? Well , that’s what everyone else thinks too! We got there at 10 AM and even though it was kinda dark we had the cave  all to ourselves  until 11 AM when the other tourists started flooding in and the small cave quickly felt crowded.

komodo dragon cruise

Trek To Wae Rebo Traditional Village:   Wae Rebo is most usually visited on 2-day overnight trips since it’s a difficult location to reach. You need to drive 4 hours outside of Labuan Bajo (over super bumpy roads), and then hike 1.5-3 hours uphill to reach the traditional village. Once you get there, you can experience one of the most picturesque traditional villages in Indonesia. ▶  Click Here to Book a Tour of Wae Rebo!

Cunca Wulang Waterfall in Flores is one of the many activities you can do after taking a boat tour of the komodo islands.

Visit Cunca Wulang Waterfall:  Full disclosure –  Cunca Wulang  is the most unhinged waterfall I’ve visited in Indonesia. I think Cunca Wulang’s infrastructure suffered during the pandemic, and it wasn’t really kept up with – but if you’re into an  adventure , the reward at the end of the path is a pretty cool waterfall that not many other tourists visit!

3 Day Komodo Boat Trip Guide to see Komodo Dragons & Padar Island

3 Day Komodo Boat Trip Guide to see Komodo Dragons & Padar Island

Boating through the Indonesian islands to see Komodo Dragons was a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Not only did we see these ancient beasts, we saw spectacular sunsets, pink beaches, manta rays and islands that are so beautiful they don't even look real!

Our comprehensive guide will explain how to book your Komodo boat trip, the best places to see and what you can expect on your trip.

3 Day Komodo Boat Trip Guide

Is this experience for you.

komodo dragon cruise

We want to mention that this is not a luxury cruise by any means. You will be cruising the sea on a wooden boat with a basic toilet, washroom and bedroom. The weather is also sweltering at times. Although the kitchen is small, we couldn't believe the variety of food that the chef was able to make. It was delicious!

Having a private tour allowed us to have the top deck of the boat all to ourselves. We enjoyed lounging on the chaise lounges located in the shade and watching the scenery go by. With a group tour it may feel crowded on the boat.

We chose a boat without air conditioning to save on the price, but it was so hot in our sleeping cabin that we slept on our lounge chairs instead. We found it fun to sleep on the top deck, but it's definitely something for you to consider.

We went into the experience not having expectations of the amenities and we had a great time. If you're up for an adventure cruise, it will not disappoint!

How long should you go for?

komodo dragon cruise

We recommend going for 2 nights/3 days to see the best of the area. We went for 3 nights/4 days and it was one day too much. Our days on our Komodo tour were so jam-packed, we were physically exhausted from the heat, snorkelling, hiking and our sleeping conditions. A 2 night/3 day Komodo tour would have been perfect.

10 Must-See Places in the Komodo area

komodo dragon cruise

There are 10 spots in the area that were our favourites. They shouldn't be missed! We customized our Komodo tour to make sure we saw them all. In three days you should be able to see all 10 spots.

Padar Island

komodo dragon cruise

Our favourite island for its beauty was Padar Island. The shape of the island is most unique we've ever seen . When you take the short hike up to the viewpoint you will see a birds-eye view of the green volcanic mountains, a black sand beach, a pink beach, and a white beach! Watching the sunset from here was a perfect moment.

Komodo Island

komodo dragon cruise

Komodo Island is the first of two islands where you will be able to see Komodo dragons. When you arrive at the island you are assigned a local guide who takes you around the island. Right when we arrived we saw Komodo Dragons by the entrance. It seemed like they were sleeping or had eaten a lot and were too lazy to move. They can eat up to 80% of their body weight in ofne sitting! As we kept walking, we saw some dragons walking around slithering their cute, skinny long tongue.  It was a surreal experience seeing these giant venomous lizards that can grow up to 10 feet!

Top Tip: bring small cash with you so you can tip your local guides.

Rinca Island

komodo dragon cruise

Rinca island is the lesser known island with Komodo Dragons and feels wilder than Komodo Island. When we arrived at the dock we could see Komodo dragons lounging on the beach. Once we got in the park, our local guide gave us optional hikes we could take to find Komodo Dragons in their natural surroundings. We chose a 45-minute hike that gave us a pretty viewpoint of the island.

When we arrived back at the entrance we were looking at some trinkets for sale when out of nowhere we heard someone yelling and a saw a Komodo Dragon running very fast down the path towards us! We jumped out of the way. We couldn't believe how fast the Komodo dragon could run! The giant lizard wasn't running to eat us, but to run away from the ranger who was shooing it out of the tourist only zone.

Out of Komodo Island and Rinca, we preferred Rinca, but it's worth it to go to both to increase your probability of seeing the dragons.

Manta Ray Point

Snorkelling with manta rays was one of our top experiences. They are huge and grow 3-7 meters wide! It was a magnificent moment swimming with these beautiful creatures. They are not dangerous or harmful to humans. Sometimes we saw them doing flips out of the water when boating around!

komodo dragon cruise

Pink beach was one of our favourite beaches to relax and swim at. It was tranquil and so relaxing. Is the sand actually pink? Yes subtly, but not like some of the over-edited pictures show on Instagram! The sand might not be as bright pink as you expect from pictures, but the grains of sand really are pink and have a true natural beauty.

Taka Makassar

komodo dragon cruise

We nicknamed this beach "snake island" because of its shape. The swimming here is fantastic. The white sand bar is like something you see in a movie where a person on a dinghy washes up on shore. Paradise would not be found for that person though, since there is no shade!

Kelor Island

komodo dragon cruise

Kelor Island will likely be the first stop on your trip as it's the closest to the port town Labuan Bajo. The tiny island has a steep little hill you can walk up to see a view of the sandbar and the crystal clear sea below. Once you're done your mini hike you can reward yourself by going for a dip in the water.

Kalong Island

komodo dragon cruise

When you visit Kalong Island, you won't actually step foot on the island but anchor your boat to wait for sunset. Once the sun sets, thousands of bats fly out of the forest to find their prey. It's like a scene out of a scary movie. It's the real life version of Night on Bald Mountain from Fantasia. The flying foxes (fruit bats) are large with scalloped wings and have a wingspan of up to 1.5 meters long! It was a very cool experience.

Rinca Fishing Village

komodo dragon cruise

We didn't expect to be moved by a little fishing village. This is the place where you can really see the local islander way of life. Our guide recommended visiting here and we are so happy we did. When we stepped foot in the tiny village, we saw many kids splashing around in the water having fun. Lots of them excitedly ran up to us smiling and waving saying "HELLO MISS"!

It was a culture shock to see how little the people had material-wise compared to back home. No internet, no air conditioning. The traditional wooden houses were built on stilts and didn't provide much privacy. We felt silly that we were starting to break after a few days from the heat and no air conditioning. We were inspired by how happy and content the people appeared. We didn't see one face without a smile and they were all so friendly. They never once asked us for money. In fact, when we bought some candies and Coca-Cola from a little store and said they could keep the change, the lady instead gave us tons more candy!

We wished we would have known beforehand about the village, because we would have brought soccer balls and school supplies for the kids! They are so cute.

Places that were underwhelming

komodo dragon cruise

Everywhere on the island is beautiful, but there were a couple places that weren't as spectacular as our top spots mentioned above. We visited Gili Lawa, but were underwhelmed with the snorkelling compared to other spots. The island is beautiful for sunset, but we preferred Padar Island.

Kanawa Island was underwhelming since there is a small resort there. It didn't feel as wild and authentic as the other spots.

How to Book Your Komodo Boat Tour Guide

komodo dragon cruise

There are many companies that offer boat excursions through the Komodo islands. The things you should look for in a tour company are:

  • 4.5-5 star rating on Tripadvisor (read the reviews!)
  • If they offer private or group tours. We were looking for a private tour.
  • A guide that speaks good English (or whichever language you prefer)
  • Good value in price compared to others. Ensure all meals, park fees, snorkelling, and tracking fees are included in the tour price.
  • If the boat has air conditioning

Checking the reviews on Tripadvisor is the most important thing to make sure they are an established and trustworthy company. My sister and I travelled together alone and we would have been anxious on our private tour with a crew of four men if we didn't have the reassurance from positive traveller reviews.

The company we chose was Indonesian Boat Trip . The price was right for us and we were able to customize our trip to see the places we wanted. We felt safe with our friendly crew and the boat. The food that came out of the kitchen was awesome!

Most of the companies do not list their prices online. Reach out to your favourites and ask for a quote.

Best time to visit Komodo Island

komodo dragon cruise

The best time to visit the Komodo area is during dry season from April to mid-October. Mid-October to December is also a decent time with plenty of sunshine, but some rain. We visited the Komodo islands during the end of December. We saw some rain storms in the distance, but it never rained on us once. Each day we had tons of sun and it was very hot.

You can see manta rays all year long, but you will see the most of them between December-February. However, January-February is very rainy, so we wouldn't recommend visiting during this time.

How to get to Komodo Island

komodo dragon cruise

The starting point of your tour is from the port town of Labuan Bajo. It is a quick one-hour flight from Denpasar, Bali. Be careful when choosing the airline for your flight, because some Indonesian airlines have low safety ratings. We chose Garuda Indonesia since it has a high safety rating .

Our Komodo tour company picked us up at the airport and we began our tour from there!

How much will your Komodo Boat tour cost?

komodo dragon cruise

Your Komodo tour will vary in price depending on the number of days you go, if you get a private tour and if you have air conditioning. Make sure you contact multiple companies for quotes!

In 2018 our private 4 day tour with no air conditioning cost us 7,400,000 IDR (~$500 USD) each. This was including all of our meals, drinks, park fees and snorkelling gear. We had four crew members on board with us and made sure we brought enough cash to tip them at the end.

What to bring on your boat trip to Komodo Island

komodo dragon cruise

Don't forget to bring these essentials:

  • Sunscreen (high SPF!)
  • Rash guard for snorkelling. Trust us, a bikini won't cut it on your third day of snorkelling. That sun is hot!
  • Breathable pants and shirts (you can buy these in Bali beforehand for cheap)
  • Hiking shoes
  • Shorts and tank top for hiking
  • Beach coverup
  • Playing cards
  • Headphones to listen to music
  • Soft drinks and candies. Our tour came with coffee, tea and water, but it was nice having a sugary snack.
  • Power bank. The outlets only work when the engines are on.
  • Hair elastics
  • Toilet paper
  • Toiletries (natural shampoo, conditioner, body wash)
  • Notepad and pen
  • Kindle or books

Enjoy the adventure!

Itinerary of Komodo Dragon tour

Day 1: labuan bajo pink beach .

komodo dragon

We will arrive at the island in mid-afternoon, to a breathtaking little bay and anchor at Pink Beach. We will spend the rest of the afternoon here, swimming, snorkeling, exploring, relaxing, sunbathing and with whatever activities we desire. Dinner will be on board and with our strong dive lights, night snorkeling will be a possibility, as well. Accommodation: on board a comfortable traditional vessel

Day 2: Komodo Island-Rinca Island

This morning is our first attempt of finding and photographing the largest lizards in the world. We will have a very early breakfast on board, while our boat slowly sails to the point where we are going to meet the national park rangers, who live on Komodo Island. Since these islands are fairly bare and extremely hot, we will start our hike as early as possible. Once greeted by the rangers and educated about the right behavior upon meeting these giant predators, we take off and hike the most beautiful green forest trails of the island.

Other than finding and photographing Komodo Dragons, we will also keep our eyes open for other wildlife, such as birds, buffaloes, wild boar, macaques and deer. And once the sun climbs too high on the horizon and everything gets just hot and quiet, we return to our sailboat and sail to yet another beautiful, secluded location for lunch and for the afternoon fun. After lunch we sail to Rinca Island, to yet another lovely snorkeling spot, and the rest of the day will be dedicated again for water activities, snorkeling, swimming and short trips on the beach. Dinner will be served on board. Accommodation: on board

Day 3: Rinca Island – Kalong

This morning will be used for another photographic attempt for that perfect Dragon profile on Rinca Island. So, the morning activity is very similar to that of yesterday’s: we meet the rangers and go for a hike on the island. The exact route will be determined by what we have seen the previous day. Once the heat pushes us back onto our boat, we will sail to the tiny and beautiful island of Kelor. Here we drop anchor for a great lunch, and to explore the water world by our snorkels, followed a short siesta.

Once the sun goes a bit further down on the horizon, we will lift anchor and sail to the proximity of a small mangrove island, where thousands of flying foxes reside for the day. Our anchorage point for the evening provides us with perfect views as these giant bats take off at dusk, into the pink sunset skies, on their way to nearby forest to forage on fruits, palm dates, flowers and even nectar. Dinner will be served on board. Accommodation: on board

komodo dragon tour

Day 4: Kalong -Labuan Bajo

This morning we start with snorkeling around. Once back on the boat, we sail to Warloka Primitive Village for lunch and exploration. These ancient village ruins provide interesting encounters with stone post dolmens and ancient ceramics. From here we sail to Bidadari Island, where we anchor for the rest of the afternoon and enjoy our last chance of great snorkeling and brilliant Indonesian sunshine. Once we lift anchor, we sail for another half an hour back to Labuan Bajo. Upon arrival, we get on our transfer vehicle and drive to our local. Accommodation at Puri Sari

Day 5: Labuan Bajo – Denpasar

Breakfast will be at your Hotel. The rest of the day is free at leisure and at the appropriate time, we will drop you off at Komodo Airport in Labuan bajo for your return flight to Bali

Indonesia is home to thousands of islands, and it is a superb destination for island hopping. One of the great adventures to consider taking is a four-day and three-night cruise from the island of Lombok to the island of Flores via Komodo Island (where visitors see the famed Komodo dragon) — or the other way around Flores to Lombok. This is a cruise where visitors can see the world's largest lizard and the world's largest fish.

There are a number of cruise options, from luxury private cruises to budget cruises designed for backpackers. Indonesia is full of excellent islands worth visiting from Bali to overlooked Flores. Lombok is a great alternative to Bali with tropical waterfalls and plenty of less-commercialized activities for everyone to enjoy. Here's what to know about cruising from Lombok to Flores, and the sights to see along the way.

What To Expect Taking A Four Day Cruise From Lombok To Flores

Those planning to take the budget backpacker cruises should be prepared to forgo some of the familiar comforts. It is a superb once-in-a-lifetime adventure for most, while also being three (almost) sleepless nights.

Visitors have the option of taking either a private cabin (for two people) or sleeping on the deck. The deck is a large semi-enclosed space on the boat where 20–30 people sleep with their mats lined up next to each other.

The accommodation and facilities on the boat are adequate but basic (although at only around $50 USD per day, it is difficult to complain).

The vast majority of tourists on these cruises are Western backpackers. It is a very social experience with people hanging out and chatting on the deck and around the vessel. One of the best tour operators worth considering for backpackers is Wanua Adventure .

Wanua Adventures Four-Day Cruise :

  • Includes: Three Meals (ex. alcohol), access to national parks, snorkeling gear
  • Duration: 4 days/3 nights
  • Route: Lombok to Flores (via Komodo & Padar islands) or Vice Versa
  • Deck Class: IDR 2,800,000 (approx. $180 USD) per person
  • Cabin Class: IDR 3,300,000 (approx. $210 USD) per person (or IDR 5,000,000 approx. $320 USD cabin for one person)

This cruise may be difficult for those who experience sea sickness (the boat is constantly rolling). The boats are 20 to 25 meters (or 66 to 82 feet long).

The Prambanan Temple In Java Is An Ancient Hindu Complex With A Whopping 240 Temples

Activities on the cruise from lombok to flores via komodo island.

Activities on the way include visiting islands and hiking up the summits for sunsets, snorkeling, swimming with whale sharks, and seeing the famed Komodo Dragons of Komodo Island.

Whale sharks are the largest living species of shark (and largest fish) in the world. They are the largest non-mammalian animal in the world, growing to lengths of up to 18.8 meters or 61.7 feet.

They are filter feeders with very large mouths that roam the tropical oceans around the world, and are harmless to people. Guests don a snorkel, jump into the sea, and swim with the whale shark.

Komodo dragons are a type of monitor lizard and are the largest living lizard in the world. They are the apex predators of their world and people come from around the world to see them. Tourists are taken on guided walks with park rangers on Komodo Island to see the famous giant lizards.

Activities:

  • Island Hikes For Sunsets
  • Seeing The Komodo Dragon
  • Swimming with Whale Sharks (not guaranteed)
  • Sunbathing On Pink Beach (Komodo)

Much of the trip is spent cruising. Most of the activities are on the third and fourth days when going from Lombok to Flores. Visitors also get to enjoy the iconic Padar Island — an island with dramatic and iconic views with sweeping views and inhabited by Komodo dragons.

Once on Flores, there are a number of things worth exploring including picturesque sea caves, the traditional Waerebo Village in the mountains, and the Liang Bua Cave , where the 'Hobbit' or Homo florenesis species of humans were discovered.

Blue Lava? What To Know About The Ijen Volcano in Indonesia

Indonesia is a backpacker's tropical paradise.

There are countless adventures awaiting backpackers in Indonesia. Every island is very different, with its own set of languages, cultures, and often its own religion (e.g. Bali is majority Hindu).

Popular activities for tourists in Indonesia are diving, snorkeling, seeing ancient temples on Java, volcano hikes, tropical waterfalls, tropical beaches, and seeing the Komodo dragons. Visitors can also hire a motorbike (a moped) and ride around the island and through the ancient mountainous jungles.

The islands are well-connected by a series of ferries and flights.

  • Visa Policy: eVisa/Visa-on-Arrival For 30 Days (extendable for another 30 days)

Indonesia is one of the easiest countries to backpack through. The country is affordable, the people are friendly (and surprisingly proficient in English), and full of attractions. Indonesia even has the largest Buddhist temple in the world, Borobudur in Java .

Komodo Dragon Facts

Komodo Dragon

Komodo dragons are the absolute bosses of the lizard world. These creatures have been around for 900,000 years, sauntering around the Indonesian Islands with their long claws and thick reptilian tails. They are also known by natives of Komodo Island as ‘ora’ and ‘buaya darat’, meaning land crocodile.

Seeing Komodo Dragons in their natural habitat is one of the things to remember. The primal force of nature appearing before your eyes. It’s no surprise that the tours and cruises in Komodo National Park are gaining popularity by year, especially among photographers and nature lovers. Read on below to learn more about Komodo Dragon Facts.

History Of The Komodo Dragon

The Komodo dragon was first discovered in 1910 when Dutch colonials were exploring the Indonesian Islands. Knowledge of these creatures became widespread some 2 years later after Peter Ouwens published photographs and skin samples extracted from the recently discovered creature. The first Komodo dragons to integrate into western culture arrived at the London Zoo for the Reptile House when it first opened its doors in 1927. Three of these original specimens are still in London to this day, (stuffed and preserved of course) at the National History Museum! The evolutionary origin of these lizards began in Asia roughly 40 million years ago; From Asia, these animals migrated to Australia where they increased in size into giant forms of their former selves. 15 million years ago a collision between Australia and Southeast Asia allowed the Komodo dragons to move yet again to another continent – here they found a home in what we now know as the Indonesian archipelago.

Anatomy Of The Komodo Dragon

Komodo dragons are extremely distinctive-looking creatures. At first glance, you will notice their textured and rough scaly skin – the bony plates that show on their armored surfaces are called osteoderms. Their general coloring can be a range of hues from glistening orange to sparkling blue, swamp green, and/or grey. Noticeable from the exterior, the Komodo dragon has sizeable claws and an enormous tail, which measures the same size as its body in length! Their long claws and strong forearms give them the ability to dig holes, which they then burrow into and use for sleeping. Conventionally these sensational animals weigh around 70 kg as fully grown adults. Nevertheless having said that, the largest recorded wild specimen was a female weighing in at 166 kg!

As for the interior, Komodo dragons have 60 serrated teeth – almost twice as many teeth as a human! These mini daggers are replaced regularly, encasing their long, yellow, deeply forked tongues. These unique specimens use their tongues very cleverly for tasting, detecting, and smelling stimuli just like other reptiles. Due to their vomeronasal senses, Komodo dragons can distinguish smells, and therefore prey, up to a huge 9.5 km away! Unfortunately, their eyesight is not as accomplished as they can only see clearly for up to 300 meters and struggle with identifying stationary objects. Ultimately, its least developed sense is actually hearing – these creatures have restricted hearing to a maximum of roughly 2000 hertz. However, Komodo dragons have been recorded to respond to sound signals, which proves these inquisitive lizards are not completely deaf.

Komodo Dragon Behavior and Lifestyle

These compelling creatures run around rapidly, shuffling their head from side to side as they do so. It’s no wonder how they have survived so long as these lizards thrive in almost every element – they can run at high speeds of up to 20 kmph, dive deeply down to 4.5 meters in water, and climb up trees and flora with their powerful limbs. Be that as it may, due to their immense weight they will struggle to climb very high without falling or giving up. Komodo dragons combat this by standing on their hind legs, using their tail as a supporting structure to create somewhat of a tripod, in order to balance and catch prey that would be otherwise out of reach. These crafty little reptiles prefer to reside in hot and dry places, typically dwelling about in the savanna, open grasslands, or tropical forests. Komodo dragons are rather solitary creatures, explicitly come together for hunting or mating – aside from these activities the lizards will remain completely unaccompanied and detached from social activity.

Hunting requires the utilization of a stealthy approach; Using their tails and tongues they will ambush their prey until finally, these carnivores can consume the carcass. Their innate sense of smell allows them to locate a successful hunt from far away, to which they will scuttle towards in hopes of a bountiful feed. Prey is devoured in a hierarchal procedure, with the largest to the smallest dragons getting their share. Sometimes there will be a little disagreement over who should be first, resulting in squabbles and fighting in the instance. Because of their slow metabolism, Komodo dragons can survive on as little as 12 big feeds in one year! And just like people might wipe their mouths after a hearty meal, Komodo dragons rub their faces into surrounding dirt or bushes after eating, insinuating they don’t massively enjoy the smell of the raw flesh they have just devoured. You don’t have to worry as they don’t attack or eat humans (usually)…

Komodo Dragon Interesting Facts

  • They can actually consume up to 80% of their body weight at one sitting
  • They grow up to 10ft in height (That’s Massive!)
  • The Komodo Dragon will leave only 12% of an entire animal when finished eating. Their diet includes organs, bones, and intestines after shaking the insides out. Very little is left at the end.
  • Female Komodo Dragons can lay approximately 30 eggs without any assistance. This allows a single female to swim to another island and start a new “colony.”
  • Live up to 30 Years
  • They are Excellent Swimmers
  • Komodo Dragons are Venomous
  • Komodo Dragons will eat baby Komodos if no other prey is around

komodo dragon cruise

Komodo, Indonesia

Indonesia's isolated Komodo Island is a natural wonder of tropical savanna and scrubland, home to the famed pre-historic Komodo dragon. Komodo National Park is the only place on earth that they can be found in the wild. The island of Komodo itself is about 60 square miles in area and volcanic in origin, with dramatic landscapes of 2,000-foot craggy mountains, deep canyons, savannas and monsoon rain forests in the valleys. Fresh water is scarce on the island, collected during the monsoon season in a few isolated areas. Human habitation is therefore limited to only one settlement in Slawi Bay.

Komodo Dragon

Komodo dragons are endemic to the Komodo Islands , a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The Komodo dragon, the king of the lizards, is the world’s largest and heaviest reptile. Named after the island where humans spotted a dragon-like creature for the first time, the Komodo dragon is an endemic Indonesian species found on Komodo Island and its neighboring islands.

On our Komodo Island itineraries, we sail to Loh Buaya on Rinca Island, Nusa Tenggara. Famous for stunning sceneries and calm winds, it is the perfect atmosphere for trekking and for your up-close encounters with these prehistoric Komodo dragons. Another hotspot will be Horseshoe Bay at the southern end of the islands, where you can visit the dragon’s favourite haunts aboard the Aqua Blu skiffs.

The Komodo Dragon’s size, made up of a long tail, strong and agile neck, and the forked tongue makes for a mean sight to behold. Even more so, in recent years, visitors have increasingly swamped this Indonesian island, intimidated by the thrill of coming so close to such a wild and endangered creature.

Meet the Dragon – Komodo dragon Facts

Komodo dragons are not to be taken lightly, as they are one of the strongest predators in the lizard species, having taken on much bigger prey, even humans.

Their sense of smell is highly developed, and is their greatest asset when hunting for prey. Using their forked tongues, the dragons have an acute sense of smell that they can detect warm-blooded animals from up to five miles away. A curious organ on the roof of their mouth, called the Jacobson’s organ, analyzes the information from the tongues and signals the direction of the prey.

Komodo dragon Size and Weight

These giant lizards can reach up to 10 feet in length! Male dragons can grow up to 10 feet (or three meters long), while females can grow up to eight feet (or two and a half meters long). They have a muscular tail that is almost as long as the length of their bodies. Some of them weigh a whopping 136 kg (300 pounds), with the average weight of the Komodo dragon being about 80 kg (176 pounds). With massive claws and powerful legs, the Komodo dragon can run very fast in short bursts, and are also strong swimmers.

Komodo Dragon

Laced with venomous proteins in the form of potent anticoagulants (compounds that prevent blood clots), the saliva of the Komodo Dragon makes it one of the most efficient predatory creatures known to mankind.

Komodo dragon Bite and Venom

Komodo dragons have 60 razor sharp teeth with the ability to replace themselves if damaged or lost. They can go through four or five sets of teeth in their lifetime, as they rely on their razor-sharp teeth and strong claws in attacking their prey. If its prey does not die from the attack, they have an even stronger weapon – their lethal venom. Their saliva contains 50 different strains of toxic bacteria – causing an instant and deadly infection in its prey.

Komodo dragons can swallow huge portions of meat swiftly. Their stomachs expand quickly and can consume up to 8-% of the dragon’s specific body weight – in a single meal. Once they have killed their prey or found a dead or decaying body, several dragons converge to share the meal together. The largest male dragon gets to eat first, followed by smaller males and females, with the juveniles eating the remains last.

Komodo dragon Habitat and Diet

The Komodo dragon can only be found on several Indonesian islands, having lived in this same habitat for millions of years. Preferring the tropical forests, dragons can also be seen on land or near water, clocking up kilometres daily in search for food.

Komodo dragons are carnivores, and they eat any kind of meat but mostly feed on carrion. They feed on small lizards, snakes and birds. If they live to be older than four years, they hunt for deers, their most-loved food, and other larger prey such as goats, rodents and monkeys. When adult Komodos are very hungry, their prey can also be smaller Komodo dragons .

Komodo dragon Conservation Status

Komodo dragons were discovered by western scientists in the beginning of the 20th century. Since then, they have been an object of observation and have gradually become a popular tourist attraction. In 1980, Indonesia established the Komodo National Park to preserve and protect the endemic Komodo dragon and other endemic species of the rich marine environment, including the orange-footed scrub fowl and the timor deer. Today, Komodo National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage site.

The conservation status of the Komodo dragon has classified them as a vulnerable species . In spite of all efforts, the influx of tourism may be posing a threat to the environmental conditions of the dragon ’s natural habitat, interfering their mating process and resulting in a decreasing number of offspring. Moreover, Komodo dragons that liv e outside of the National Park are also at risk, due to quick shrinking of their habitat, as impacted by the increased human population. Possibly the biggest threat for the lizards are the illegal poachers who steal the dragons in orde r to sell them at high prices.

Habitat Recovery Strategy and Species Preservation

Many wildlife lovers visit Komodo Island and other islands in the Komodo National Park to observe the giant lizard in its natural habitat . The influx of tourists has sparked much speculation and has raised the question of the safety of this glorious species and the environmental conditions of their habitat . All of this led to the Indonesian government considering completely closing Komodo Island as a conservation strategy for habitat recovery.

Nonetheless, the economic boost from the thriving tourism has become an important part of the conservation process and species preservation. Therefore, the habitat recovery strategy will only include restrictions to visits. Additionally, many new studies will uncover preservation methods in which the local population also plays a major part. Newly established education programs work with local communities to help build awareness of the species and the importance of protecting them and their habitat .

Relax on the dazzling sands of Pink Beach

Imagine a beach straight out of a Pinterest board - pink, pretty and picturesque. One of only seven of its kind in the world, Pink Beach in Komodo National Park gets its unusual color from a microscopic creature that produces a red pigment on the fringing coral reefs, which combined with crushed red coral creates a dazzling dusky pink. While its aesthetics make it unforgettable and Instagram-worthy, taking a dip in the calm, crystal-clear waters is irresistible.

Witness Komodo dragons in their natural habitat

Stepping onto the rugged landscape of Komodo Island feels like stepping back to a time when prehistoric creatures ruled the earth. With its monstrous size, reptilian walk and flicking forked tongue, the Komodo dragon is truly an ancient sight to behold. Indeed, the oldest records of the Komodo dragon in Flores date to around 1.4 million years ago, during the Early Pleistocene. Expert local rangers will guide you to a vantage point where you can observe these astonishing creatures in their natural habitat and take photos worthy of National Geographic.

Hike and experience the view from Padar Island

Fitness enthusiast or not, the hike to the summit of Padar Island is an absolutely essential experience while exploring Komodo National Park . The view makes every step of the hour-long hike worth it: feast your eyes on four crescent-shaped, shimmering beaches below green-capped mountains surrounded by the tranquil azure water. A relatively minimal effort for such unforgettable scenery, wouldn't you agree?

Watch bats setting off against the setting sun

Have you ever watched thousands of bats taking flight from their nesting sites, soaring in sync against the stunning backdrop of the setting sun? Kalong Island, a tiny mangrove islet in Komodo National Park , is named after its resident fruit bats, known locally as kalong. Witness nature's awe-inspiring display while soaking in the orange and golden hues of the twilight sky.

Interact with one of the world's wealthiest marine environments

Immersing yourself in the underwater paradise of Komodo National Park enables you to experience some of the world's richest marine biodiversity. The region is home to 1,000 species of tropical fish and 260 species of coral. Pull on a snorkel and mask to observe these graceful, gentle creatures as they effortlessly glide through the water - sure to be an unforgettable moment for nature lovers.

To contribute to the livelihood of the ecosystem, you can participate alongside AYANA's in-house Marine Biologist in planting coral fragments onto ropes or frames. As of today, the biologist has planted 3,100 coral fragments in an underwater area spa nning 950 sqm, fostering the development of new coral colonies for the future.
