Visiting the Underground of the Colosseum
Colosseum’s underground guided tour benefits.
Booking a guided tour of the Colosseum's underground provides visitors with exclusive access to areas normally restricted to the general public as well as a rich historical context that elevates the experience beyond a simple walkthrough. Knowledgeable guides, often with a background in history or archaeology, narrate the compelling stories of what unfolded in these ancient spaces.
Accessibility at the Colosseum’s Underground
The underground levels are not wheelchair accessible due to their structure including stairs and steps. Those with mobility impairments should contact the tour operator before booking to discuss if accommodations can be made.
Exclusive Colosseum Underground Areas
The underground circuit of the Colosseum reveals the dungeons where animals and gladiators awaited their fate, and the complex tunnels where intricate machinery once hoisted them into the arena floor.
The exclusive itinerary of an Underground Colosseum guided tour often includes access through the Gladiator's Gate, a dramatic entrance leading directly to the arena, where combatants once entered to roaring crowds. Visitors will also see the remnants of the elevator systems, a testament to Roman engineering prowess. Additionally, some tours offer the rare chance to stand at the Gate of Death, the exit through which the fallen were carried away.
The depth of detail provided by the expert guide makes it clear why this access is such a privilege, while the panoramic views from various vantage points forge an indelible connection with ancient Rome.

The 7 best rome colosseum tours with skip-the-line access.
Gladiators battled on the arena floor. A good guide will help you battle the crowds.
The Best Rome Colosseum Tours
Courtesy of ArcheoRunning
As the most enduring symbol of the Roman Empire and one of the most famous landmarks in the world, the Colosseum receives more than 6 million visitors per year, so it's not easy to escape the crowds. A visit is worth it, though, if you want to see the world's largest amphitheater – once known as the Flavian Amphitheater – and try to imagine what it would have been like 2,000 years ago.
A standard ticket to the Colosseum also includes access to the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill, so many (but not all) tours also include those ancient sites. Inside the ancient complex, there is very little signage explaining what you're looking at. A good guide will not only get you skip-the-line access but also bring these incredible places to life. Keep in mind that most Colosseum tours only give you access to the arena floor and upper level. If you want to visit the underground hypogeum, you need to make sure it's included in the tour.
Crown Tours: Skip the line Colosseum, Palatine Hill and Roman Forum tour
Getty Images
Price: From $57 for adults
Duration: 2 to 3 hours
Standout perk: Engaging guides speak several languages.
Selected by GetYourGuide as a Certified Experience, this group tour starts at the Colosseum, then takes you to the Palatine Hill and the Roman Forum. Groups consist of up to 30 people, and tourgoers are given headsets so they can better hear and follow the guide. The tour meets at Largo Gaetana Agnesi on the hill overlooking the Colosseum about 30 minutes before the official entry time to get everyone checked in and set up with headsets. The guide then leads participants into the Colosseum and up to the second level, where there's a chance to stop and take photos. On the way back down, there's another photo-op at the arena level before the guide leads the group over to the Palatine Hill and Roman Forum.
Crown Tours also offers guided tours of the Vatican, Sistine Chapel and Saint Peter's Basilica, as well as the Borghese Gallery, Pantheon and other sites.
Local tip: This tour is offered over a variety of time slots every day. Pick one of the earlier time slots to make sure you'll finish up by lunchtime.

Through Eternity Tours: Ultimate Colosseum Tour with Roman Forum & Palatine Hill
Price: From $85 for adults
Duration: 3 hours
Standout perk: This tour includes the Palatine Hill, which some tours skip.
Recent visitors praise the knowledgeable guides for their passion about ancient history and keeping the tour moving while explaining everything in detail. This tour starts at 9:30 a.m. seven days a week and finishes up around lunchtime. In addition to the Colosseum, highlights include the Via Sacra and the House of the Vestal Virgins in the Roman Forum, as well as the Farnese Gardens on the Palatine Hill.
Groups are limited to 16 people; if there are six or more people taking the tour, the guide gives out headsets so everyone can hear. Participants are asked to meet 10 minutes before the start time in front of Cafe/Restaurant Angelino ai Fori on Largo Corrado Ricci. The tour is stroller-accessible, but not wheelchair-accessible. Participants should wear comfortable shoes and bring a water bottle, especially on hot days.
Through Eternity Tours offers a variety of group and private tours of Rome and other destinations, including Florence , Naples and Pompeii.
Local tip: Book a table at the nearby Taverna dei Fori Imperiali to enjoy a leisurely lunch after the tour.

The Moon Over the Colosseum Tour
Price: From $27
Duration: 1 hour
Standout perk: You get after-hours access to the Colosseum and hypogeum.
This seasonal tour offers a completely different perspective on the Colosseum, when it's illuminated and the last of the visitors have left for the day. The official night tour offered by the Parco Archeologico del Colosseo focuses on the underground level, where the guide shows participants where the animals were caged and how they were lifted up onto the stage on proto-elevators made of wooden platforms. The tour group then ascends the stairs and sees a multimedia installation depicting Jerusalem before passing through the service gallery and ending on the arena level. The tour offers a rare opportunity to see the Colosseum without the crowds, but the tradeoff is that photos may not come out as well at night.
Participants on the tour arrive at the Valadier Gate, meet the guide and go through security. This tour does not include the Roman Forum or Palatine Hill. The tour hours change by season, and dates for the spring 2024 season have not been released yet as of the time of publication.
Local tip: There are a bunch of companies offering this tour for triple the price of the official tour, but the official tour is great.

LivTours: The Best of Colosseum & Ancient Rome With Exclusive Arena Access
Courtesy of LivTours
Price: From $151 for adults
Standout perk: Virtual reality headsets show what the ancient sites would have looked like.
Recent tourgoers praise the guides on this tour for bringing the facts and stories about ancient Rome to life. These semiprivate tours are guaranteed to have no more than six people, making them a more personalized experience than other group tours. However, because the tours are small, the guides don't use headsets, and some participants note that it can be difficult to hear the guide over the noise in the Colosseum.
Along with the confirmation email, participants receive an invitation to download an app. During the tour, the guide gives everyone a cardboard virtual reality headset that works with the app and shows a reconstruction of the Colosseum and surrounding valley. After visiting the Colosseum, the tour continues to the Palatine Hill and Roman Forum, where the virtual reality headsets show you a reconstruction of the Circus Maximus and the structures in the Roman Forum. At all the sites, you get skip-the-line access.
Local tip: You can get some great photos from the upper level, especially if you stand at the apex of the oval.

ArcheoRunning: The Unveiled Colosseum Running Tour (or Walking Tour)
Price: $218 for private groups of up to 6 people + the cost of tickets
Standout perk: You get access to the third level and attic.
This private tour is led by Isabella Calidonna, a licensed tour guide and certified personal trainer. Through her company ArcheoRunning, she leads visitors on running and walking tours of Rome early in the morning to see the city without the crowds. For this tour, Calidonna meets guests at their hotel at 7:30 a.m. and leads them on a running tour through the Eternal City's most beautiful squares before bringing them to the Colosseum, where they have the chance to visit the third level and the attic – areas normally closed to the public – as well as the lower levels of the Colosseum, Palatine Hill and Roman Forum. This tour must be booked at least a month in advance in order to confirm 8:30 a.m. access to the Colosseum.
AR Experience, an offshoot of ArcheoRunning, also offers tours of the underground at 10 a.m., 11:15 a.m. or 1:30 p.m., as well as more relaxed three-hour tours that are also suitable for children and people with mobility problems.
Local tip: You can't run inside the Colosseum, but running around it is a great way to take it in while getting some exercise.

Roma Experience: Private Colosseum Tour With Roman Forum & Palatine Hill
Courtesy of Roma Experience
Price: From $520 for two people
Duration: 3 to 4 hours
Standout perk: See these ancient sites with an archaeologist who dug at the Roman Forum.
For a deeper understanding (no pun intended) of the Colosseum, Roman Forum and Palatine Hill, a tour with Elisa Valeria Bove, CEO of Roma Experience, is one of the best you can buy. She studied archaeology and has been involved in excavations at the Roman Forum and other sites, so she's just the person to guide you if you want to get beyond the surface level. Her private tours range from just under three hours for a skip-the-line Colosseum, Roman Forum and Palatine Hill tour to the full-day "See Rome in One Day" tour, which also includes a guided visit of the Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel. Be sure to specify if you want to visit the hypogeum when you book.
Roma Experience organizes bespoke private tours throughout Italy, including multiday itineraries. Bove will work with you to customize your experience and bring you to places you wouldn't think to visit, like Quintili's Villa on the ancient Appian Way.
Local tip: If you want to see another incredible archaeological park, let Bove take you to Ostia Antica, less than an hour from Rome.

Imago Artis Travel: Timeless Tales of Gods and Laymen of the Ancient Rome
Courtesy of Imago Artis Travel
Price: On request
Duration: 4 hours
Standout perk: This tour includes the Pantheon in addition to the Colosseum, Roman Forum and Palatine Hill.
Founded by three art historians with a passion for Roman art and history, Imago Artis Travel offers bespoke private tours of Rome and beyond. Imago Artis works closely with their clients to craft personalized itineraries that highlight the city's most incredible monuments and hidden gems. This tour lasts a half-day and includes the Colosseum, Roman Forum, Palatine Hill and Pantheon, with an optional stop for espresso, but you can customize the itinerary to do a full-day tour or multiday itinerary.
Other itineraries that include the Colosseum bring visitors to the Basilica of San Clemente, known as the "lasagna church" because it was built in layers: The deeper you descend, the further back in time you go. Imago Artis also grants visitors exclusive access to off-limits places, such as a church overlooking the Roman Forum. The company also organizes multiday itineraries throughout Italy.
Local tip: There's an element of surprise and delight with Imago Artis that's hard to find elsewhere, especially if your guide is Fulvio De Bonis, one of the company's founders.

Our tour of the Colosseum, Palantine Hill and Roman Forum with Eddy was exceptional. Eddy’s background in archeology plus his engaging, fun personality combined to create a fascinating and informative tour. The group size was reasonable. All in all one of the better tours I’ve taken.

Colosseum Tours
Best colosseum tours, colosseum highlights.
Welcome to the Colosseum, one of the world’s most visited monuments! The Colosseum has been the iconic symbol of Rome since its construction was completed in 80 AD. This incredible amphitheater could seat upwards of 50,000 spectators and hosted famous gladiator battles. The facade has seen its share of pilfering and damage over the years but it is still remarkably beautiful even 2,000 years later.
Did you know that Colosseum tickets have been used at the monuments since its inauguration? Although the modern-day ticket looks much different to that of ancient times, the system used in ancient times when entering with Colosseums tickets is the same that is used in stadiums today. You can still see the roman numerals that are carved above the Colosseum entrances that directed spectators to their sections. It is believed that the Colosseum could be filled or emptied in a matter of minutes.
Millions of visitors line up to visit the Colosseum every year in order to immerse themselves in ancient history. This, of course, means that large crowds and long ticket lines are hard to avoid. Fortunately, special access and Colosseum skip the line tickets are available to savvy travelers who book their Colosseum guided tour online in advance.
There are various types of ticket/tour options available that will fit your unique needs. Whether it is a quick Colosseum audio guide tour before you depart Rome or an in-depth experience that explores the underground dungeons of the Colosseum, your perfect tour awaits.
Colosseum guided tours come in a variety of options like small groups or private experiences that include a visit to the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill. You can even book a Colosseum audio guide tour or Colosseum skip the line tickets if you would like to explore the area at your own pace.

The Colosseum map
Here's a glimpse of what you can expect to see on your Colosseum tour, depending on the type of ticket you choose. Note that access to the Arena, Underground, and levels 3-5 all require special access tickets. Standard tickets only guarantee entry to levels 1 and 2.
Explore the Colosseum
The Arena, once measuring 83 meters by 48 meters (272 ft by 157 ft), was a wooden floor covered in sand. Within its confines, gladiators engaged in deadly combat, captivating both royalty and thousands of Roman citizens. Today, only a segment of the original arena floor remains, revealing the Hypogeum below.
The Colosseum Arena cannot be accessed with a standard Colosseum skip-the-line ticket. To explore the Arena, you must choose a guided Colosseum tour that offers access to this area.
The Colosseum's underground, known as the Hypogeum, was a complex network of tunnels and chambers that served as a holding space for gladiators and animals before their duels. The Hypogeum featured a sophisticated system of lifts and pulleys to transport them to the arena floor.
To visit the Underground visitors must opt for a guided tour that provides special access to the area. Entry to the Underground is not permitted without a guide.
The Colosseum Museum, located on the second level of the amphitheater, features artifacts, including ancient weapons, armor, and other items related to the gladiatorial games. It also features detailed models and interactive exhibits that illustrate the Colosseum's construction and its use over the centuries.
The Colosseum Museum is open to all those visiting the Colosseum and is accessible with your Colosseum entry tickets
While the 3rd, 4th, and 5th tiers are considered part of the Colosseum Belvedere, the Belvedere is mostly used to refer to the 5th level as it means 'beautiful view'. From this uppermost level of the Colosseum, you will be able to enjoy panoramic views of Rome and the inside of the amphitheater from here. Historically, it was where the general public sat, farthest from the action but still part of the spectacle. The Belvedere was reopened to the public in 2017 after a long closure period for safety reasons.
Now, visitors can ascend to this level as part of a guided tour that specifically mentions access to the Belvedere.

At a depth of 50 to 120 meters lies the second, the coded system of Metro-2 of Moscow subway, which is equipped with everything you need, from food storage to the nuclear button.
According to some sources, the total length of Metro-2 reaches over 150 kilometers.
The Museum was opened on Sportivnaya metro station on November 6, 1967. It features the most interesting models of trains and stations.
Coffee Ring
The first scheme of Moscow Metro looked like a bunch of separate lines. Listen to a myth about Joseph Stalin and the main brown line of Moscow Metro.
Zodiac Metro
According to some astrologers, each of the 12 stops of the Moscow Ring Line corresponds to a particular sign of the zodiac and divides the city into astrological sector.
Astrologers believe that being in a particular zadiac sector of Moscow for a long time, you attract certain energy and events into your life.
Paleontological finds
Red marble walls of some of the Metro stations hide in themselves petrified inhabitants of ancient seas. Try and find some!
- Every day each car in Moscow metro passes more than 600 km, which is the distance from Moscow to St. Petersburg.
- Moscow subway system is the 5th in the intensity of use (after the subways of Beijing, Tokyo, Seoul and Shanghai).

Go beneath the streets on this tour of the spectacular, mind-bending Moscow Metro! Be awed by architecture and spot the Propaganda , then hear soviet stories from a local in the know. Finish it all up above ground, looking up to Stalins skyscrapers, and get the inside scoop on whats gone on behind those walls.
Know More about this tour
We begin our Moscow tour beneath the city, exploring the underground palace of the Moscow Metro. From the Square of Revolution station, famous for its huge statues of soviet people (an armed soldier, a farmer with a rooster, a warrior, and more), we’ll move onto some of the most significant stations, where impressive mosaics, columns, and chandeliers will boggle your eyes! Moreover, these stations reveal a big part of soviet reality — the walls depict plenty of Propaganda , with party leaders looking down from images on the walls. Your local guide will share personal stories of his/her family from USSR times, giving you insight into Russia’s complicated past and present. Then we’re coming back up to street level, where we’ll take a break and refuel with some Russian fast food: traditional pancakes, called bliny. And then, stomachs satiated, we are ready to move forward! We’ll take the eco-friendly electric trolleybus, with a route along the Moscow Garden Ring. Used mainly by Russian babushkas(grannies) during the day, the trolleybus hits peak hours in the mornings and evenings, when many locals use it going to and from their days. Our first stop will be the Aviator’s House, one of Stalin’s Seven Sisters, followed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs — and you’ll hear the legends of what has gone on inside the walls. Throughout your Moscow tour, you’ll learn curious facts from soviet history while seeing how Russia exists now, 25 years after the USSR.

How To Get Adele Tickets In 2024
Adele has given fans a reason to set fire to the rain this spring: She’s announced new performance dates for 2024. The 16-time Grammy winner’s Weekends With Adele tour picks up in mid-May for her Las Vegas residency at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace. After that, she travels to Munich, Germany in August for ten shows before finally returning to Vegas for October and November. Here’s everything we know about how to get Adele tickets this year.
Adele is performing a select number of shows in the summer and fall of 2024. Read on to see how to ... [+] get tickets for her tour of Vegas and Munich.
Standing Desk Converters Vs. Standing Desks: How To Choose Your Best Desk Setup
The best golf rangefinders to pin down your game in 2024, where to buy tickets for “weekends with adele”.
While tickets for the Weekends With Adele tour dates are mostly sold out on direct platforms like TicketMaster , fans who want to ditch their earbuds and experience Adele live still have a few options to snag tickets on the secondary market. Keep in mind that prices on ticket reselling platforms fluctuate greatly date-to-date, and the cost varies wildly between the Vegas and Munich events.
- Ticket reseller StubHub has concertgoers covered for all of Adele’s upcoming tour dates in the United States and Europe, with U.S. tickets selling for $700 and up; tickets in Germany start at $100.
- Prices on Vivid Seats are similar to StubHub, with the Vegas shows starting at around $770 and the Munich shows starting around $100 a ticket.
- SeatGeek is only offering tickets for Adele’s shows in Las Vegas, with tickets starting at $750. Prices have escalated quickly, though, with Seatgeek warning on its website, “The average price for Adele tickets is around $3,216” and “floor seats for Adele cost around $2,350.”
- TicketNetwork’s prices for Adele’s Vegas show begin around $1,000 each, and her Munich show tickets start at $120. However, you can save $25 on a purchase of $150 or more using promo code TNTIX25 at checkout.
When Do Adele Tickets Go On Sale?
Tickets are already on sale, so don’t wait too long if you want to see Adele live this year. Many dates—including her re-opening night in Vegas on May 17—are listed on ticket sites as “selling fast.”
Adele announced on Instagram earlier this month that the Vegas concerts in October and November will be shows that had to be rescheduled from March. Ticket holders should expect an email with more information about their new show date.
The singer had to put her Vegas residency on hold during after she fell ill. Being sick took “a toll on [her] voice,” she shared in a statement, as reported by Deadline .
Of course, if you don’t yet have a seat at one of those shows, you can still purchase tickets for the October and November dates; they are not exclusively for fans who are being rescheduled.
How Much Are Adele Tickets?
It should go without saying that as with all live performances, ticket prices vary by venue and the seat’s proximity to the stage. For this tour, Adele is limiting her performances to just two stages: The Colosseum at Caesars Palace for her Las Vegas residency and The Open Air Arena at Messe München in Munich, Germany.
On average, you’ll need to spend significantly more money on tickets for the Vegas show than on the Munich gigs. The lowest prices at the Messe München clock in less than $150, while Vegas tickets start around $700 (with some tickets selling for as much as $6,000).
It’s also important to remember that ticketing sites typically charge additional fees that aren’t included in the original price of the ticket but instead are added at checkout.

Germany’s Leader Walks a Fine Line in China
Chancellor Olaf Scholz tried to promote German business interests while delivering warnings from Europe about trade and geopolitical tensions.
By Alexandra Stevenson and Melissa Eddy
Chancellor Olaf Scholz of Germany tried to strike a delicate balance on a trip to China this week, promoting business ties with his country’s biggest trading partner while raising concerns over its surge of exports to Europe and its support for Russia.
Mr. Scholz met with China’s top leader, Xi Jinping, at the Diaoyutai State Guesthouse in Beijing on Tuesday, the culmination of a three-day visit with a delegation of German officials and business leaders. He also met with Premier Li Qiang as the two countries navigate relations strained by Russia’s war in Ukraine and China’s rivalry with the United States, Germany’s most important ally.
Throughout his trip, Mr. Scholz promoted the interests of German companies that are finding it increasingly hard to compete in China. And he conveyed growing concern in the European Union that the region’s market is becoming a dumping ground for Chinese goods produced at a loss .
But Mr. Scholz chose a conciliatory tone over a combative one in his opening remarks before sitting down with Mr. Xi on Tuesday morning, in a meeting that stretched over three hours and turned into a walk and lunch.
It was the German leader’s first visit to China since his government adopted a strategy last year that defined the Asian power as a “partner, competitor and systemic rival ,” calling on Germany to reduce its dependency on Chinese goods.
Germany’s economy shrank last year, and its weaknesses have exposed a reliance on China for growth. Energy prices have risen because of the war in Ukraine, which has been facilitated by Beijing’s support for the Kremlin. German companies have pushed for more access to China and complained that they face unfair competition .
The chancellor visited German companies with extensive investments in China and met with trade representatives and officials in the sprawling industrial metropolis of Chongqing in China’s southwest and in Shanghai and Beijing.
At a talk with a group of students in Shanghai on Monday, Mr. Scholz fielded a question from a student who planned to study in Germany this year, who said he was “really worried” because the country had partially legalized cannabis. “When you study in Berlin, you can run around the whole time and never meet anyone who does that,” the chancellor assured him.
But he also used the platform to push more serious messages about trade. “Competition must be fair,” Mr. Scholz told the students. “We want a level playing field,” he said.
Mr. Scholz’s trip was an example of the difficult dance that Germany is trying to do: maintaining economic ties with China while managing U.S. pressure to align itself more closely with Washington against Beijing.
In his meetings, Mr. Scholz highlighted Germany’s commitment to doing business with China, but he also warned that Beijing had to curb the flood of Chinese goods into Europe. At the same time, he expressed reservations about the European Union’s investigations into China’s use of subsidies for green technology industries, saying that any discussion about trade must be based on fairness.
“This must be done from a position of self-confident competitiveness and not from protectionist motives,” Mr. Scholz told reporters on Monday.
China’s manufacturing push in green sectors like electric cars and solar panels has touched off trade disputes with Europe and the United States, where such industries have also received government support. But with 5,000 German companies active in the Chinese market, Germany stands to lose more than many of its European partners would if Beijing were to retaliate against the European Union.
“If the E.U. goes too hard against China, we could expect countermeasures and this would be a catastrophe for us,” said Maximilian Butek, the executive director of the German Chamber of Commerce in China.
“For us it’s extremely important that the Chinese market remains open,” he said.
In his meeting with Mr. Xi, Mr. Scholz indicated that Russia’s war on Ukraine and its arms buildup were high on his agenda. “They directly affect our core interests. Indirectly, they damage the entire international order,” he said in opening remarks at the meeting, a transcript of which was provided by Mr. Scholz’s office.
Despite pressing the issue with Mr. Xi, he did not appear to win the commitment that he had sought from the Chinese leader to take part in an international conference for Ukraine planned in June. Germany had hoped that China could use its influence over Russia to help work toward a peace agreement.
Germany would also like China stop selling goods to Russia that have potential uses on the battlefield, and Mr. Scholz told reporters that he had brought up the issue in his meeting. “The point has been made,” he said. “There can be no misunderstanding about how we see things.”
China is hoping to drive a wedge between Europe and the United States by courting leaders such as Mr. Scholz. State media reports depicted his visit as demonstrating the strength of China’s relations with Europe, playing up its economic ties with Germany.
In his opening remarks to Mr. Scholz, Mr. Xi said cooperation between China and Germany, which have the second- and third-largest economies, was beneficial to the world, a remark that could be read as directed at those who have urged Berlin to distance itself from Beijing.
“The two countries should view and develop bilateral relations from a long-term and strategic perspective and work together to inject more stability and certainty into the world,” Mr. Xi told Mr. Scholz, emphasizing the importance of seeking “common ground.”
Beijing is sure to welcome the message that German businesses are committed to China. The Asian giant is trying to court foreign investment to reinvigorate its economy, which has faltered because of a housing slowdown. Some Western businesses and investors have also been rattled by Mr. Xi’s emphasis on national security, which they regard as making it riskier to operate in the country.
From China’s perspective, Germany may be its best hope of delaying or watering down any trade restrictions from Europe, said Noah Barkin, a senior adviser in the China practice at the Rhodium Group, a research firm.
German carmakers have invested billions of dollars in China, and much of their revenue comes from there. Many worry that if the European Commission imposes higher tariffs on Chinese exports, and Beijing retaliates, German businesses will suffer most.
Chinese officials “know that German companies are heavily invested and they use that politically to influence political decision making in Berlin,” Mr. Barkin said.
Germany’s biggest companies, including BMW, Mercedes-Benz and BASF, have large operations in China and strong, effective lobbies in Berlin, Mr. Barkin added. Executives from those companies, along with several others, traveled with Mr. Scholz to China.
“The supply chain in China is stuffed with German goods,” said Joerg Wuttke, a former president of the E.U. Chamber of Commerce in China. “If China has a price war with Germany, then no one will make money anymore.”
Mr. Scholz also brought along the German ministers for agriculture, the environment and transportation, officials who experts said would be particularly interested in working with China.
“You set an agenda with these three ministers, the tonality is overall a cooperative one, these are areas that we want to work on,” said Janka Oertel, director of the Asia Program at the European Council on Foreign Relations.
Chinese officials, for their part, have brushed off the European accusations of unfair trading practices, calling them groundless and an act of “ typical protectionism .” They have hinted that they could retaliate for any actions taken by the European Union, saying that China was “strongly dissatisfied with and firmly opposes” its investigations.
In an interview with the German newspaper Handelsblatt, Wu Ken, China’s ambassador to Germany, said the competitive edge of Chinese electric vehicles “relies on innovation, not subsidies.”
“The challenge faced by developed countries lies more in the fact that Chinese companies are more efficient,” the ambassador said.

2024 Volvo China Open Green Drive initiative
In cooperation with the European Tour Group’s ‘Green Drive’ initiative, the 2024 Volvo China Open will implement a number of activities to emphasize sustainability throughout the event. The key areas of focus of this campaign include green transportation, waste reduction, environmentally friendly catering, inclusivity and accessibility, and community legacy. Together these activities will help the tournament continue to push the boundaries of sustainability for golf events.
Low Emission Transportation
Eco friendly transportation has consistently been a cornerstone of sustainability efforts at the Volvo China Open. Last year upon the resumption of the tournament, the organizing committee facilitated shuttle bus services for fans, staff, and media using clean energy buses. This year, additional shuttle services will exclusively feature thethe Volvo EM90, the company's first ever fully electric premium MPV, further reducing carbon emissions throughout the event.
Plastic Waste Reduction
The 2023 Volvo China Open marked the inaugural year of a successful collaboration with Bluewater, Sweden’s leader in water purification technology. In a concerted effort to reduce plastic waste, the tournament prohibited the sale of single-use plastics on-site. Instead, Bluewater installed 17 water purification stations throughout the venue, providing complimentary water to tens of thousands of fans, athletes, and staff. This initiative resulted in an estimated distribution of 130,000 liters of water and prevented 260,000 half-liter plastic water bottles from contributing to environmental pollution. As the tournament eagerly returns to the DP World Tour this year, the number of water stations will be increased to 21, complemented by the addition of a new water wall feature. Furthermore, only eco-friendly cups will be available to spectators, further enhancing our commitment to sustainability.
Green Catering
Adhering to the principles of the 'Green Drive' initiative, all food and beverages served at this year's Volvo China Open will be sourced exclusively from local seasonal ingredients. Our menu selection will prioritize sustainability, offering vegetarian and halal options to cater to diverse dietary preferences. In our commitment to minimizing waste, any food surplus generated during the event will be composted, while all containers utilized will be made from recyclable and biodegradable materials.
Inclusivity and Accessibility
One of the central pillars of the 'Green Drive' initiative is to foster inclusivity within the game of golf, ensuring access for all individuals regardless of gender, age, or disabilities. This year's Volvo China Open, hosted at the Hidden Grace Golf Club in Shenzhen, remains committed to this ethos, striving to make the tournament open and accessible to everyone. Efforts are underway to enhance the venue's accessibility for individuals with disabilities. Moreover, the tournament is expanding its social outreach initiatives, including local school programs and collaborations with the Shenzhen Metro Volunteer Federation. These concerted efforts aim to ensure that this year's tournament is even more inclusive and welcoming to all.
Community Legacy
The Volvo China Open is dedicated to contributing to the local community through various means. As the largest golf tournament in China, it attracts numerous spectators, generating significant economic benefits for the city of Shenzhen and particularly the Longgang district. The organizing committee prioritizes local sourcing of raw materials, further bolstering the region's economy. Additionally, the tournament provides employment opportunities for many local residents, fostering the acquisition of new skills and professional development. Importantly, the event's impact extends beyond the duration of a single week, contributing to long-term sustainable development goals in the community.
The European Tour Group’s ‘Green Drive’ initiative is a robust commitment to addressing priority issues such as climate change, biodiversity loss, air and ocean pollution, and sustainable and ethical procurement. Launched on World Environment Day, June 5, 2021, as part of the overarching Corporate Social Responsibility program “Golf for Good”, the Green Drive aligns with the United Nations’ “The Decade of Action” and aims to achieve zero carbon emissions by 2040. The initiative is supported by the GEO Foundation for Sustainable Golf (GEO), a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting sustainability in golf. The Green Drive’s approach to climate action aligns directly with The Paris Agreement and the UN Sport for Climate Framework. The initiative focuses on key areas such as fostering nature, conserving resources, social responsibility and value, and climate action.
In line with the 'Green Drive' initiative, the Volvo China Open remains committed to enhancing its established sustainability endeavors throughout the event. By implementing a diverse array of initiatives, the tournament aims to fulfill and potentially surpass the ambitious standards set by the European Tour Group.
"Since 2021, we've really embedded green and sustainable development principles into every aspect of our event planning, both during and after the event. We've seen some tangible progress towards making the event more sustainable," shared Michel Zhao, Chairperson of the Board of Directors of Volvo China Open. "Now, as we move forward, we're at a crucial stage. How we build on our successes and push things further really tests our entire team, especially in areas like providing eco-friendly catering, ensuring fairness and inclusivity, and boosting local prosperity. It's not just about what we do internally, but also about garnering support from the wider community. However, I'm confident that with the guidance of the European Tour Group's 'Green Drive’ initiative, we can overcome any challenges and deliver outcomes that we can all be proud of."

Best tour ever
We thoroughly enjoyed our experience of being taken back 2000 years in this 3 hour tour of some of the most historic places on the planet. John, our tour guide, was superb. His knowledge of the history was incredible but so was his ability to tell stories which really captured the essence of the time. He started by asking if we were ready to go back 2000 years, then did exactly that. He brought the whole thing to life as we journeyed through the rise and fall of the Roman Empire. We almost didn’t want to return to the present day. This really was the best tour we have ever experienced.
