James Arthur, the X-Factor winning pop and R&B singer, best known for his breakthrough single “Impossible”, was born March 2, 1988 in Middlesbrough, England, UK.

Born to a former fashion model and a former DJ and drummer, James Arthur was raised in Redcar, North Yorkshire until the age of nine. Alongside his mother and step-father, Arthur then moved to Bahrain and studied at the local British School of Bahrain before moving back to Redcar when he was 14. Prior to auditioning for a slot on the X Factor James Arthur played in a number of alternative and indie bands including the progressive Moonlight Drive from 2005, the alternative-rock groups Cue the Drama and Save Arcade, and the indie pop/rock band Emerald Skye. Arthur had also uploaded a stream of songs to his SoundCloud page in a collection entitled “Sins by the Sea”, as well as performing in The James Arthur Band, which incorporated R&B, soul and hip-hop influences.

At his X Factor audition in Newcastle, UK, the young musician sung judge Tulisa Contostavlos’ single “Young” and was put through to the bootcamp stage, mentored by Nicole Scherzinger. After singing Take That’s “A Million Love Songs” and Bonnie Hathaway’s “I Can’t Make You Love Me”, Arthur advanced to the live shows, where he ultimately won the final with 53% of the vote. James’ winner’s song, Shontelle’s “Impossible”, became the fastest-selling winner’s single to date and topped the UK Singles Chart in its first week. The singer’s subsequent single “You’re Nobody ’til Somebody Loves You” was released in August 2013, debuted at No. 2 behind Lorde’s single “Royals”, and was taken from Arthur’s debut self-titled album.

“James Arthur”, released in November 2013, debuted at No. 2 on the UK Albums Chart, aided by the further singles “Get Down” and “Recovery”. After promoting his debut with the James Arthur Tour, a 37-date tour across Europe, the singer released a the mixtape “All the World’s a Stage”, and performed at 2014's V Festival.

Live reviews

I first saw James during his audition for the 2012 X Factor, his raw emotion and beautiful voice totally captivated me... Gary's comment said it all, "If anyone dares touch what you do, cuz it's so good!" I watched every week as he blew the competition away and cried when he won... I have never looked back! I forced myself to learn social media,(was the first American fan on Twitter) so I could track his career and most importantly see when he would be coming to America... Ended up making a Facebook page "James Arthur the U.S Wants U" 2 years in because I wanted to help speed things up! Little did I know it would take this long!

A JArmy sister, I had helped finance her daughters beauty pageant, saw how I always said, "Where is my Fairy Godmother, I wanna go!" Every time I watched all the Hub-bub over a concert in the UK! She wrote to tell me if I could get a plane over, she had a place to stay and a ticket! I booked a plane ticket! It was a once in a lifetime event and was more than I had hoped for, words could not describe him live!

James is not only the most prolific singer/songwriter that I heard in decades but the emotion and soul he puts into his music is phenomenal! Over the past 5 years, his music has helped me through the deaths of my husband and father and the disappearance of my brother... besides my daughter, the last 3 remaining people close to me!

James has a way to pull the bad feeling out and heal the soul! AND on top of all that, incredibly, he is the sweetest, kind and caring person you could want to meet (James, please never lose that and you could "turn the world around!"- Just one of the hundreds of songs he has written.)

I am beyond words that he is finally going to start touring here! It feels like I have waited for this forever! I am taking my good friend who also is a major fan and my only daughter to see him in Weatfield, Aug. 25th.. I am so excited and cannot wait to see him again! There has never been a doubt in my mind that Americans will fall in love with his amazing talent!

Taking the X-Factor crown in 2012, saw James Arthur ascend into the charts with his first single “Impossible” (a cover of Shontelle’s hit) debuting at number one. Having been in numerous local alternative rock bands and not really taking off and issues regarding his personal life spurred Arthur to enter the competition which saw him soar through the show, winning the hearts of the British public with irresistibly smooth and soulful, R&B vocals. His debut album “Impossible” achieved number one in the UK, going double platinum and reaching similar successes in Europe. His follow-up single “You’re Nobody Until Somebody Loves You” defined and solidified Arthur’s distinctive style.

The X-Factor was just a small insight into his live persona. When he steps on stage he exudes confidence as he effortlessly sings “Get Down” accompanied by a full band and backing singers as he reaches out to the crowd. He really knows how to work the crowd as he interacts with them making full use of his natural charisma. The crowd is filled with hundreds of adoring fans ranging from all ages, who show banners of support and waving their arms from side to side. “Recovery” sees a chorus of voices sing along in unison as Arthur strips it down. “Impossible” gets the biggest reaction as he picks up the electric guitar, letting the crowd sing the entire first verse and Arthur is overwhelmed by the reaction. With incredible soulful vocals mastered to perfection, you can guarantee a heart-warming performance with energy in abundance every time from James Arthur.

X Factor champion turned tearaway, there were always questions as to whether a reality television show was the best platform for James Arthur to display his alt-pop sounds. He showed real promise during the show adapting his raspy vocal to genres including dance, dubstep and rock. Many consider his departure from the Syco label to be the making of him as it once again handed James the reigns regarding his creative outlook.

He definitely seems a lot more at ease when performing live and being able to play in the way in which he enjoys. The setup could be described as anything but pop, the man himself arriving in all black and taking centre stage with his acoustic guitar and several accompanying musicians. They run through a selection of his best material which showcases both the unusual vocal and his creativity as a musician. A cover of Marvin Gaye's has been reimagined as a rock ditty and works really well leading into 'Impossible' which evokes mass singalong. Arthur has not dismissed his X factor roots, but he seems to be in a better place now when looking to move forward.

It was incredible! One of the best concerts I've ever seen. James really knows how to cheer up the fans. There was always an amazing energy between him and the crowd, and the smalk talks between songs were really funny and made me feel more "close" to him and understand a little bit more what he felt when writting the songs (like the anxiety issues that I also have) and he made me cry a little bit on Quite Miss Home (I promised myself that would not cry). The songs list was THE BEST, I wasn't expecting the "rock" vibe in some of the songs but it was incredible and James killed it on the guitar.

Also, the singers that came first (Jamie Grey and Emily Burns) were amazing and really cool and sweet. I had an awesome night and hope to see him again because his voice is even better on live!

What can I say James Arthur smashes it..From start to finish he kept us captivated, sung his heart out and left us begging for more. I’m an emotional wreck and I can’t wait til I can see him again....

The singing was amazing the heart was amazing and what a brilliant entertainer... James is the real deal and what you see is what you get... He wears his heart on his sleeve and I felt like I was on stage with him living his dream and every song is heartfelt and real...

Long live King Arthur and I hope he goes on to write songs forever... I was expecting to have an amazing night but I was blown away by how good he actually is and my daughter ( a sceptic ) who came with me has been converted... James Arthur fans for life...

Went with my partner she's the big fan I like and totally appreciate his music but it's not what I generally pick on Spotify.

Saying that absolutely fantastic performance he gave it his all and he was funny and engaging with the crowd. The stage was a bit basic but feel he didn't need elaborate lights and smoke to put on a great performance. The sound was great we had seats up near the back of the venue but still had a clear good view of the whole stage. Would recommend him to any fan and anyone who is into East listening music.

Absolutely amazing show at the BIC last night, I saw James Arthur a couple of years ago at the same venue and enjoyed it enough to go again last night but this time was so much better. James interacted with the audience 100%, he seemed more relaxed than last time and sang perfectly!! The BIC is great as it’s easy to get to by car/train, there were no ques, clean loo’s which is always a bonus and not stupidly priced for a beer!! Had an amazing night..thank you!

julie-stewart-3’s profile image

Very good; however and this is a rhetorical question

1. Why did 25% of the audience only watch the concert whilst looking at the screens on their phones ?

2. Why some people act without any regard for the fact that in trying to get the best video they block all vision of 3 people in the row behind ?

Sorry rant over, James was very good a 1 1/2 hour set best song “Sun Comes Up”

Charlotte O C was also excellent highly recommend.

Absolutely fantastic. JAmes Arthur did not disappoint. He sang songs from his old and new albums and included the old favourites. He is an inspiration to many people who suffer with anxiety and depression and was not afraid to speak about it. He was funny a real presence on stage. He has a great voice and an extraordinary talent . Well done JAmes you did yourself proud I was honoured to come and watch you sing m. Brilliant

Absolutely brilliant. Could have watched him for hours. He thoroughly throws himself into it with enthusiasm and humour. The band were amazing too. Please let's have more dates this year. This is my 3rd time to see him and most definitely won't be my last. I have been to gigs for the past 30 years including Bowie, Boomtown Rats, The Script, Eminem, Enrique and he is BY FAR the best.

James Arthur: Bitter Sweet Love World Tour

With special guest forest blakk, james arthur, forest blakk, concert information.

James Arthur will bring his Bitter Sweet Love World Tour to Cincinnati, Ohio at The Andrew J Brady Music Center® on Saturday, May 11, featuring very special guest Forest Blakk.

Known for his warm brand of R&B-inflected pop, James Arthur initially rose to fame as the victor of the ninth season of the British version of The X Factor in 2012. Buoyed by his competition-winning rendition of the  Shontelle  ballad "Impossible," his self-titled debut reached number two in the U.K. He built upon that success with two more Top Five U.K. albums, 2016's  Back from the Edge  and 2019's  YOU . Arthur has also reached the U.K. singles chart with songs like 2018's "Rewrite the Stars" with  Anne-Marie  off  The Greatest Showman  soundtrack, 2020's "Lasting Lover" with  Sigala , 2021's "Medicine" from his fourth album,  It'll All Make Sense in the End , and 2022's "Lose You." He continued this streak with the aching 2023 ballad "A Year Ago."

James Arthur announces new album and UK tour - including Newcastle date

Middlesbrough-born James Arthur is back to his very best, with new music and a European tour in 2024

  • 11:21, 15 SEP 2023

James Arthur's new album Bitter Sweet Love is out January 26th

After a grand return with new singles Blindside and A Year Ago, Middlesbrough's very own James Arthur has announced his fifth studio album in Bitter Sweet Love which is set for release in January.

To celebrate the launch, the 35-year-old is also set to embark on a widespread tour of the UK and Europe in 2024, with a run of eight massive arena shows - including a night at Newcastle's Utilita Arena .

As well as featuring the two new singles, Bitter Sweet Love is said to be James 'back to his very best' with thirteen world-class songs. So far in his career, Arthur has managed to bag four top ten albums - with Back From The Edge hitting the number one spot back in 2016.

He has also collaborated with some of the biggest names in the industry over his illustrious career - including Anne-Marie, Sigala, Rudimental, Marshmello and more. James also has an average of 38 million monthly listeners on Spotify alone.

Say You Wont Let Go took him to new heights over in the US, while also being titled the UK's most streamed song of 2016 - going on to receive four billion streams, as well as a further 1.5 billion views on YouTube. Earlier this year, the track achieved RIAA Diamond Single status, with more than 10 million certified units sold.

James is just one of 100 RIAA Diamond Single achievers worldwide. His other big hits include Impossible, Can I Be Him, Sun Comes Up, Naked, Empty Space, Rewrite The Stars, Lasting Lover and Train Wreck - all of which are platinum records.

Back from the Edge was released back in October 2016, while his latest album in It'll All Make Sense In The End was released in 2021. James said: "The more albums you make and the more success you have, the more the pressure tends to be upon you.

"But I genuinely felt like a kid again, just making music I loved, not worried about trying to please everyone."

Event Details

Singer and songwriter James Arthur has announced a headline show at The O2, taking place on Friday 22 March 2024.

The news succeeds his recent return with new tracks ‘Blindside’ & ‘A Year Ago’ and the announcement of his fifth, brand new studio album Bitter Sweet Love - out January 26th, 2024 on Columbia Records.

As well as featuring the two recently released singles, Bitter Sweet Love is James back to his very best, producing thirteen bites of world class music. After being on stage, it struck him how his fifth album should sound. A sold-out crowd was singing along to his hits, immersed in the emotion that James could hear in his own voice.

Within days of the tour ending in the States, James began sessions with different producers to see who could click with his vision. His final stop was in L.A. with Steve Solomon, with whom he co-wrote his 2016 megahit ‘Say You Won’t Let Go’.

Back in Britain, James attempted to write with more producers, but none came close to his bond with Steve, who flew over to finish the album at Miloco Studios in South London last summer, and produce a mature body of work, full of depth and oozing the impeccable songwriting quality that has defined James’s esteemed career to date.

The Middlesbrough-born, recent Brit Billion-certified artist has scored 4 top 10 albums, with 2016’s Back From The Edge hitting the Number 1 spot and over his career has collaborated with the likes of Anne-Marie, Sigala, Rudimental, Marshmello & many more.

James is one of the world’s biggest streaming artists, with over 38 million monthly listeners on Spotify alone. ‘Say You Won't Let Go’ became his breakthrough hit in the US. It was officially the UK's most streamed song in 2016 and has gone on to be enjoyed via 4 billion streams while the song's official video has achieved 1.5 billion views on YouTube. Earlier this year, the track became his first RIAA Diamond Single with 10 million certified units – making James one of just 100 recipients of an RIAA Diamond Single certification in the programme's history.

Other huge hit singles include: ‘Impossible’, ‘Can I Be Him’, ‘Sun Comes Up’, ‘Naked’, ‘Empty Space’, ‘Rewrite The Stars’, ‘Falling Like the Stars’, ‘Train Wreck’ and ‘Lasting Lover’, which are all certified platinum records. The song Cars Outside is currently becoming another global hit for James.

Back from the Edge was released on October 28, 2016 and entered the UK Albums Chart at #1. James’ last album, 2021’s It’ll All Make Sense In The End, was a lockdown project recorded at home that leant heavily on programmed beats.

“The more albums you make and the more success you have, the more the pressure tends to be upon you. But I genuinely felt like a kid again, just making music I loved, not worried about trying to please everyone.”

The follow-up single, "You're Nobody 'til Somebody Loves You", reached number two on the UK Singles Chart. Arthur released his self-titled debut studio album in November 2013. After the release of his debut studio album  James Arthur , he was involved in a series of controversies which led iTunes to offer refunds for the album.

Madonna returns to Austin after 40 years with sweaty, sexy Celebration Tour at Moody Center

“It took 40 years to invite me back,” Madonna told an Austin audience on Sunday night. “Should I take that personally?”

The Queen of Pop indeed last performed in the Live Music Capital in 1985 at the Erwin Center. Strange, but true (blue).  Perhaps the mistress of reinvention, ever looking for the new, waited until that venue was demolished and she could pack in two nights at Moody Center . She’ll perform again on Monday.

Regardless, Austin has missed a lot of Madonna over four decades. That made her retrospective Celebration Tour all the more spectacular — and if the cradle of weird can appreciate anything, it's a spectacle.

Madonna postponed her original September dates following a health scare, and pent-up fan pride runneth over. Before the show, material girls and leather daddies filed through the corridors of the arena. Blonde Ambition-era high ponytails mingled with “Lucky Star” hair bows. Local drag artists like Brigitte Bandit — in full “Like a Virgin” regalia — posed for photos a few steps away from a Trisha Yearwood-branded nacho stand. On the floor, a group of middle-aged ladies in tulle skirts and fishnet gloves chatted next to a row of bears in decades-old concert tees. Accessorization was key. If you forgot your chunky silver cross pendant, hopefully someone could lend you their riding crop.

The air conditioner took the night off. The show had an 8:30 p.m. start time, but the main event didn’t get going until 10:30 p.m., when tour emcee Bob the Drag Queen emerged wearing the rosy contents of Marie Antoinette’s closet.

“It’s showtime,” Bob said with a tongue pop.

Her Madgesty lived up to her name, appearing as a holy apparition, much more exciting than her namesake’s various cameos on pieces of toast. Cloaked in a dark kimono with giant sleeve cutouts, Madonna donned a headpiece equal parts crown and halo to sing late-’90s techno earworm “Nothing Really Matters.”  A giant lighting rig circled above like an even larger hat from heaven. It’s right there in the name, folks.

“Nothing takes the past away/ Like the future,” she sang. The song made a fitting icebreaker for the mother of all pop music: “Everything I give you/ All comes back to me.”

Then it was off to the time machine — though as the star admitted later in the show, the setlist made emotional sense, if not always the chronological kind. First stop: Danceteria. Madonna conjured her early 1980s it-girl era with “Everybody” and “Into the Groove.” Dancers swarmed around her in thrift store finery and spotted the singer in a backbend. There was a lot of crotch work.

“I’m about to share the story of my life with you,” Madonna said during the first of several rambling, prickly stretches of crowd work that skirted right up to coherence but instead opted for a middle finger. Joined by a masked dancer dressed as her past self, she asked if everyone knew what a metaphor was. An audience member asked who her next boyfriend would be. “My next boyfriend is me,” she cracked.

Then, Madonna offered a sage bit of advice for the next two hours: “Embrace the confusion.”

The singer astral projected into CBGB with an electric guitar as her guide, shredding through “Burning Up” and spewing Budweiser at the front rows. (Shout out to the stage tech responsible for wiping up Ms. Ciccone’s beer spit immediately afterward.)

So much of Sunday’s party hinged on awe-inspiring choreography. For “Open Your Heart,” Madonna and company made iconic use of a few chairs and the laps that went on top of them. For “Holiday,” the singer and her crew became a many-headed disco hydra massed around a mirror ball the size of New Jersey.

A trip through time also invited sorrow. At the end of “Holiday,” a dancer fell to the ground as Madonna gazed mournfully. She entered a floating picture frame rigged to the ceiling, one of the night’s most oft-used set pieces, for a gorgeous rendition of “Live to Tell.” Around her, photos memorialized icons lost to AIDS — Freddie Mercury, Keith Haring, Robert Mapplethorpe, Arthur Ashe, Cookie Mueller and more. An affecting vigil from a pioneering activist.

But this was a Madonna show, so then shirtless men in lace gimp masks came out to writhe around glowing crosses. Robed monks, rosary beads, a Catholic censer and a snippet of Sam Smith’s “Unholy” helped usher in “Like a Prayer.” One of her most controversial pop culture moments, the song played like a thumping salute to sacrilege and gymnastics.

Madonna put on a Marlene Dietrich wig and thrusted her way into the 1990s: “Erotica,” “Justify My Love” and “Bad Girl.” In the middle there, she squeezed in 2005’s “Hung Up,” which might have felt like an awkward fit for that act if not for the fleet of topless dancers.

Of course, Madonna couldn’t curate her legacy without two things: cone bras and “Vogue.” Bob the Drag Queen took the stage with a glittery bowler hat and a houndstooth fan to take Austin to the ballroom. Clips of the tour’s “Vogue” segment have gone viral for months, and it was just as joyful in person. A conically breasted Madonna always welcomes a special guest to help her judge a cavalcade of runway looks. For Sunday’s show, she brought up drag superstar Trixie Mattel , and the pair gave their 10s and chops as appropriate. A gay ol’ time.

The dancers weren’t the only ones falling into dips on stage. The setlist meandered a bit after Ginger Rogers danced on air and Rita Hayworth gave good face. “Human Nature” and “Crazy For You” led into James Bond theme “Die Another Day,” a song this reviewer appreciates for nostalgic reasons but admits is an oddball cut for a four-decade hit parade. If you longed to see Madonna dressed like a character from Alejandro Jodorowsky’s “The Holy Mountain” while dropping mainstream music’s foremost reference to Sigmund Freud, congrats.

The wide-brimmed hats kept coming. Madonna stripped to full cowgirl leathers, boot-scooted and strummed out “Don’t Tell Me” from the “Music” album. For “Mother Father,” she brought out son David Banda to sing and play guitar. (She also welcomed daughters Mercy and Estere onstage to perform during “Bad Girl” and “Vogue,” respectively.)

“People don’t get tired in Texas, do they?” Madonna asked after picking up her fallen cowboy hat with her foot. More freewheeling Madge moments: bragging on the kids, talking about forgiving herself for mistakes, berating an audience member for not lighting up his phone upon her command.

“It’s so important you understand the concept of light,” she said while vamping about darkness and such. Madonna led the “boys and girls and theys and thems” in a campfire singalong to an acoustic “Express Yourself.”

During “La Isla Bonita,” she projected jumbo photos of cultural revolutionaries like Sinead O’Connor, Che Guevara and Martin Luther King Jr. Not sure what the thematic connection between song and imagery was, but RIP Malcolm X — you would have loved dreaming of San Pedro, I guess.

As Madonna rounded the home stretch, she changed into a pink wig and textured silver catsuit that evoked Jane Lynch performing “Super Bass” on that one episode of “Glee.” Nevermind the sartorial critique: As Madonna soared above the arena in her aerial frame and doused the crowd in lasers during “Ray of Light,” she truly was goddess of her universe.

“Take a Bow” led into a questionable amount of time devoted to a Michael Jackson tribute. But there wasn’t much time to marinate on that, as Madonna stormed the stage flanked by her cadre of dancers, all dressed in recreations of some of her most famous looks. The finale: “Bitch I’m Madonna,” of course.

Super Bowl Madonna strutted next to “Frozen” Madonna. If you’d sealed an Austin fan in a cryogenic tube for the decades since the pop icon last came to town, the multiversal procession might have driven them to madness.

But, then again … the American-Statesman’s review of Madonna’s 1985 show praised the “slick, polished, contemporary Las Vegas-style production.” The critic also wrote: “Madonna may be considered by some music critics as a fleeting pop star and her penchant for lingerie and erotic posturing understandably irritates feminists. Nevertheless, Madonna is a formidable, timely talent.”

Erotic posturing. Formidable talent. She might be the living avatar of reinvention, but Madonna never lost her own plot. That’s something worth waiting 40 years to celebrate.
