15 Things to Do in Santa Clara (CA)

Santa Clara is a city of nearly 125,000 residents that’s located in Santa Clara County, about 75 kilometers south of San Francisco .

The city was founded more than 200 years ago as a Spanish Mission. Now, it’s most well-known for its booming tech industry that’s commonly referred to around the world as Silicon Valley.

Though it’s common knowledge to most football fans, it’s a surprise to many to discover that the relatively small city is also the home of the National Football League’s San Francisco 49ers.

Visitors to Santa Clara have abundant activity options at their fingertips without venturing outside city limits, so staying engaged and entertained shouldn’t be an issue.

1. Levi’s Stadium

Levi's Stadium

With a capacity of nearly 70,000, Levi’s Stadium on Marie P. DeBartolo Way in Santa Clara is one of the country’s premier professional football stadiums.

The 49ers play their home games here, and during the off-season, the stadium hosts a variety of annual events, including concerts featuring big names in the music industry.

Taking a family to a football game isn’t the least expensive activity option in the area, but for those who’ve never taken in a pro game, it’s an exhilarating experience that may be worth the cost.

Guided tours are also regularly available, and the bars and restaurants around the stadium are fun to visit year-round.

2. Ulistac Natural Area

The Ulistac Natural Area is located on Lick Mill Road in Santa Clara. It is comprised of more than 40 acres that include a variety of distinct environments.

The natural area straddles the Guadalupe River and is home to an array of plants and animals that are well-suited to its riparian habitat.

A particularly popular attraction for bird watchers, it features a number of well-marked nature trails dotted with interpretive signs.

3. Santa Clara Art & Wine Festival

The event is held in the city’s Central Park and features nearly 200 vendors from across the country selling fine art and crafts, gourmet food, and a vast selection of California’s best wines.

Proceeds are donated to worthwhile causes that benefit residents in need. It all takes place in the early fall when the central California weather is perfect for outdoor activities.

Other highlights include live entertainment and lots of art-related activities for kids.

4. The de Saisset Museum

de Saisset Museum

Though he’s not exactly a household name for those who don’t typically travel in West Coast art circles, Ernest de Saisset was one of the Bay Area’s most prominent artists in the 19th century.

Saisset was a French immigrant who enrolled in Santa Clara University and studied painting as a young man.

The museum that now bears his name is located on the university’s campus. It includes a collection of more than 100 of his most impressive works.

It’s as much a historical attraction as it is an art one, and it also has other works from European and American artists dating back hundreds of years.

Even for those who don’t fall into the tech-savvy category, it’s a fascinating place that’s definitely worth an hour or two of time.

The South Bay Area has no shortage of boba. Whether you’re craving classic creamy milk teas, refreshing fruity drinks, or cheese foam galore, you’re sure to find it here. In fact, Cupertino is home to the first boba shop to ever open in the US. And though bubble tea may have hailed from Taiwan, the options for “boba’’ have since transcended beyond simple teas with chewy tapioca pearls, and today’s options run the assortment of sweet drinks and wild toppings. But out of the plethora of big chains and local spots, a few stand out as the cream of the crop. Slurp on.

Health experts consider dining out to be a high-risk activity for the unvaccinated; the latest data about the delta variant indicates that it may pose a low-to-moderate risk for the vaccinated , especially in areas with substantial transmission . Yifang Taiwan Fruit Tea

Yifang specializes in fruit teas with natural ingredients sourced from their own farmlands in Taiwan: Its original flavor was derived from a golden pineapple jam made by the founder’s grandmother, whose family had grown pineapples for generations. With homemade organic cane sugar, seasonal fresh fruit, and organic milk, Yifang recreates family recipes in various forms. But even as the shop sticks to its roots, it continues to expand on many fronts. Yifang’s three Northern California locations recently introduced freshly baked Taiwanese Egg Pancakes to their menus.

Happy Lemon

Even as one of the largest beverage chains with more than 1,500 locations around the world, Happy Lemon doesn’t sacrifice quality. The franchise sources fruit from its own Happy Lemon Farm in Taiwan, and most of their toppings are handmade. The Bay Area locations serve a variety of fruit teas, cheese teas, fresh fruit smoothies, fruit slushies, milk teas, classic brewed teas, and yakult, but don’t miss out on their infamous Salted Cheese — a rich, cheesy foam with a dash of rock salt that is layered on top of their tea drinks — and their custardy, house-made puff cream. And for our friends in the city, fear not. Happy Lemon also has three locations in San Francisco.

Founded by the original creator of boba milk tea in Taiwan, TP Tea stands for “Taiwan Professional Tea” and aims to honor the tea-drinking culture that harkens back to the Tang Dynasty. As a chain that’s been around for more than 30 years, TP Tea still imports their ingredients, even their cane sugar, from Taiwan. And takes the quality of their tea seriously, as exemplified in their Tie Guan Yin Milk Tea, which is made from a special kind of oolong and carries a strong roasted flavor. Other crowd favorites include the Strawberry Milk Tea, Passion Fruit Green Tea, and Premium Green Tea Latte with green tea leaves that are aromatized five times using jasmine flowers.

Tiger Sugar Cupertino

If you’re a fan of brown sugar milk boba, you’ve heard of Tiger Sugar, the boba shop that helped popularize the international trend. With roots in Taiwan, the chain is known for its Black Sugar Boba Milk, which brings out these distinct streaks — or “tiger stripes” — on the cup and makes for quite the Instagram photo. Tiger Sugar cooks their tapioca pearls in a sweet, caramelized brown sugar syrup, made daily with ingredients imported from Taiwan, and serves it with organic milk, which results in creamy and delectable drinks. There’s also a second location opening in San Jose soon, so stay tuned for more Tiger Sugar mania in the Bay Area.

Fantasia Coffee & Tea

The first boba shop in the US was none other than Fantasia Coffee and Tea. Established in 1997, Fantasia made a name for itself by informing the community of tea’s many health benefits. To this day, the shop’s tried-and-true beverages are made with unrefined tea leaves and natural ingredients. Though their menu options vary by season, some of their most consistently popular drinks are the Classic Milk Teas, Fresh Grapefruit Green Tea, Lychee Green Tea, Taro Fresh Milk, and the Muddy Okinawa Teas, which are delicately topped with cream and Oreo crumbs.

Ten Ren Tea

Ten Ren Tea originated in Taiwan as a small shop that sold loose teas. Once they began serving boba milk teas in the 1990’s, they introduced them at all locations, and the rest is history.

Unlike modern boba shops that adapt to new trends, Ten Ren has always focused on the quality of the teas themselves, emphasizing their flavor and strength. By making them extra strong when brewing, they ensure the distinct taste of the teas remains intact even with the addition of ice, milk, and sugar. Ten Ren’s best selling drinks at their Bay Area locations are the Black Milk Tea, Green Milk Tea, and Roasted Oolong Milk Tea, and they continue to sell their premium tea products that range from $10 to over $300 per pound.

SoCal native Tan-Cha found a home for itself in the Bay. Unlike boba shops that offer sweet foam in just one flavor, Tan-Cha is known for its variety, with options like cheese foam, matcha foam, and tiramisu puff cream. They discourage the use of straws, so you can enjoy the foam in all its glory. When it comes to fruit teas, Tan-Cha drinks contain slices of real fruit without any artificial sweeteners or syrups. The elegant blend of ingredients makes for pretty aesthetic drinks.

Tong Sui (Sunnyvale) - Desserts & Drinks

“Tong Sui” is a Cantonese term that conveys the essence of thoughtfully prepared, traditional desserts, and this Sunnyvale shop captures that with their hearty teas, fresh smoothies, and coconut puddings. Tong Sui prides itself on using local ingredients, like organic milk from Alexandre Family Farm. The hydrating Coconut Ice Bomb is one of their most commonly ordered drinks, made with whole coconut and topped with coconut flakes, and the Avocado Smoothie with Mango Paste is another nutritious option that regulars enjoy. Tong Sui will soon open a second location in San Mateo, and the team is ideating some special drinks for the Peninsula .

Though Teaspoon may have started as one small shop in Los Altos, it now boasts locations throughout the Bay. There’s an open kitchen at each of its shops, so visitors can see what goes into crafting their drinks. Teaspoon keeps its menu fresh, regularly introducing new drinks that incorporate seasonal fruits and ingredients. Their homemade marmalades make for delicious sweet fruit teas — namely their Silky Mango drink, which is inspired by mango pudding and made with their signature mango marmalade, organic milk, and honey boba. Another popular beverage, dubbed Liquid Gold, is a sparkling double-roasted honey oolong tea topped with cream.

Jiaren Cafe

As a nonprofit cafe that aims to raise awareness for female empowerment and wellness, Jiaren Cafe’s mission resonates deeply with the South Bay Area community. They host fundraisers to elevate local nonprofit organizations and even offer mindfulness and yoga classes in a designated studio space connected to the cafe. Sourcing ingredients from other female-owned businesses, Jiaren Cafe serves an assortment of local craft coffees, teas, sparkling fruit beverages, and herbal drinks. During the pandemic, the shop introduced boba drinks to their menu, which now make up a majority of their sales. The Charcoal Hojicha Milk Tea and matcha drinks have become staples.

Urban Ritual

Urban Ritual made its way south after its original SF location drew large crowds from all over the Bay. Not only can visitors create their own drinks with selections of base teas, milk options, sweetness levels, and toppings, but the specialty drinks push the boundaries of what a boba drink can be. The Crème Brûlée drink embraces Urban Ritual’s creative approach: After Crème Brûlée is baked via traditional techniques, it’s then infused into a classic milk drink with honey boba and torched raw sugar — which creates a unique mix of velvety and crumbly textures.

TeaLyfe Drinks

Tea Lyfe may have started in a family’s small kitchen but it quickly climbed its way up the boba chain after transitioning to a pop-up and then opening at a brick-and-mortar store in San Jose. With two locations today, it still embodies its humble beginnings. By melding both the family’s Vietnamese and Mexican cultures into their menu offerings, Tea Lyfe stands out from other boba shops through drinks like Vietchata, which is infused with Vietnamese coffee and the family’s time-honored horchata recipe.

Pekoe Tea Bar

Stepping into Pekoe might feel like entering the doors of a nightclub — the booming EDM tunes, colorful neon lights, and dim atmosphere make for an upbeat ambience unlike typical boba shops. Though started in a home kitchen, it’s grown into a new social experience for boba lovers at both locations in San Jose. The menu options allow for full customization of tea strength and flavor, as well as the amount of cream, sweetness, and ice. Specialties include the Pretty in Pink, a strawberry milk tea drink that comes with strawberry hearts, and Foxy Brown, a milk tea infused with organic golden, demerara, and turbinado sugars.

'She saved my life': Phoenix chefs react to news that Barrio Cafe is closing after 2 decades

A fter more than 20 years, chef Silvana Salcido Esparza will be closing her iconic Phoenix Mexican restaurant Barrio Cafe due to health issues she's been dealing with for the last several years.

Barrio Cafe has long been an essential part of Phoenix's dining scene. Not only was the restaurant beloved by Phoenix residents and visitors alike, but Esparza, who has been a James Beard Best Chef Southwest semifinalist seven times and was a semifinalist for the national James Beard  Outstanding Chef award  in 2023, also played a crucial role in the development of several other notable Phoenix chefs.

People in metro Phoenix reacted to the news with memories and well-wishes for the beloved chef.

Start the day smarter. Get all the news you need in your inbox each morning.

Chefs react to Barrio Cafe closing, share memories of working alongside Esparza

Jorge Picos of Estero Beach Tacos is a close friend of Esparza and worked alongside her during the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic to feed the community. He said the experience "saved his life" and was part of the catalyst that led him to opening his food truck, which was named Top Taco by The Republic readers in 2023 .

"It opened up my eyes to see her working 18 hours a day, from 3 or 4 in the morning to put wood in the smoker for the cochinita or just being able to get us all going with a smile, even though you couldn't always see the smile because we had face coverings. It was something that you can put in books," Picos said.

Peter McQuaid, executive chef at Cala and "Chopped" grand champion , said Esparza was one of his earliest inspirations in the food scene. He focused a class project on her during his high school Spanish class. Esparzo offered McQuaid a job at her now-closed restaurant Barrio Urbano , which McQuaid said was a crucial first step in his culinary career.

"I got to see this huge, amazing culinary icon and figure, even at the time, really build a restaurant and a team and that was super cool to see. It's something I still remember day to day, building my teams in my restaurants," McQuaid said.

McQuaid plans to visit the restaurant as much as he can, while he can.

"Barrio Cafe is a staple. She's had other restaurants that have come and gone, but you know, Barrio Cafe was her baby and the original one. I've got to get in there a couple more times before it's gone," he said.

The Phoenix community shows love and support for Barrio Cafe on social media

Other chefs, restaurant accounts and patrons of Barrio Cafe filled social media comments with words of support for Esparza and Barrio Cafe.

"You the best Chef! Much love and respect to you and yours! Onward!" wrote Nephi Craig , chef and creator of Cafe Gozhoo, in a comment on Esparza's Instagram post.

Chef Stephen Jones of The Larder + The Delta also commented on Esparza's post: "all on your terms! Much love to you, sis!"

"The actual very best chef in Arizona. Hands down. We will miss this place forever. Legendary. Iconic. There will never be another!" wrote The Stand in a comment on The Republic's Instagram post.

One commenter wrote, "I'm so sad that they are closing, such a great restaurant. One of my favorite memories is eating there with my grandparents. My grandpa sung to my grandma over dinner with a musician that was there. Thank you for amazing food and the experiences over the years."

Another wrote, "Whoa. Huge loss, but chef served PHX well here."

How to visit Barrio Cafe

The restaurant will remain open for regular service until May 31.

Inside the FFVII: Rebirth Cafe

We went to the Final Fantasy VII Rebirth Cafe in Akihabara. Here are all the details, including photos.

  • Square Enix Cafe in Tokyo hosts Final Fantasy VII Rebirth event with themed food, drinks, decor, and exclusive merchandise.
  • Spoiler-free experience for FFVII fans, even if you haven't completed the latest chapter, with special character-themed dishes and drinks.
  • Reservations required for the popular Rebirth cafe, with English support available for overseas visitors and changes to menu on April 5th.

The whole world is excited about the latest chapter in the Final Fantasy VII Remake series, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth . As you can imagine, Japan in particular is celebrating hard, with plenty of collaborations and special events taking place now and over the coming months. One of the biggest ones is the Rebirth -themed cafe currently happening at Square Enix Cafe in Tokyo. We were able to score reservations in Akihabara just this past week, and are here to give you a peek at what is inside, whether you are planning to go yourself or just curious about what it is like.

With themed food and drinks, exclusive merchandise, special decor, free prizes, and photo ops, the Final Fantasy VII Rebirth event at Square Enix Cafe is perfect for anyone who is riding the FFVII hype at the moment. Plus, the whole experience is spoiler-free for the game's story line, making it safe to visit even if you have not completed the latest chapter in the franchise. Considering the dramatic changes that have been made to the original story, that is good news for anyone who wants to go to the cafe but does not want to risk ruining their gameplay experience.

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth Update Improves Graphics, Adds Performance Options, More

Experience the final fantasy vii rebirth cafe.

As usual for the Square Enix Cafe, the Final Fantasy VII Rebirth cafe had some really great theming for the food and drinks. Some of the more interesting ones included a pizza decorated with Zack's buster sword in the middle, and two slices of red pepper crossed to look like the scar on his face, along with a meat bun shaped like Mog, with a Cait Sith decoration on the top. We were personally tempted by the desserts, ordering the Cactaur Churros, which were green and flavored with matcha and red bean paste, along with the Moogle cheesecake, which looked like a Moogle head and came with glowing "mako" flavored tea on the side. Other dishes included a tropical Costa del Sol rice bowl, Aerith's flowery parfait , pasta with mushrooms from Gongaga, and more.

The two main drinks were themed after Cloud and Sephiroth - or more specifically, two of their limit breaks . Cloud's was inspired by Climhazzard, with sugar candy sticking out of the top to look like the move, and Sephiroth's by Octaslash. There was also a gingerale and fruit cocktail to celebrate Shinra's parade in Junon, a grape soda mix for the relaxing town of Kalm, and a beautiful fruit and flower tea inspired by Aerith. The best part about the themed drinks, though, is that they each came with a special random character coaster. Plus, each themed main dish came with a special mini-poster.

The cafe was well decorated, with plenty of character art and posters around that you could take photos of (while not disturbing other guests, of course). There was also a full-sized model buster sword , and a few special character cutouts, along with cute plush versions of Cloud and Sephiroth. There were plenty of TVs playing montages from the game all around the cafe, and a running soundtrack of the most famous themes to complete the mood.

Local Cafe Creates Impressive Stardew Valley-Themed Menu to Celebrate Update 1.6 Launch

What do you need to know to visit the ffvii rebirth cafe yourself.

It is important to note that while our last visit to the Square Enix cafe last year for the Final Fantasy XVI collaboration event included an English-support menu, the Rebirth cafe in Tokyo did not have any English. All orders are made via the provided iPad at the table, which does have an English UI for adding things to your order, but the explanations for all food and drinks, including ingredients, is only available in Japanese. If you are happy to use translation software, or order based on photos alone, it is not a problem, but be aware that if you are a more cautious diner, this may be a challenge.

You absolutely must make a reservation prior to going to the Rebirth cafe, as due to its popularity there are no walk-ins available at the moment, even on weekdays. It is easy to make a reservation using the Square Enix app, which also holds your entry ticket, but this is only available in Japanese. If you are visiting from overseas, it is better to use the website and click the "make a reservation from overseas" button, which has English support. All reservations require a 1000 yen ($6.60 USD) deposit per person, but this does cover the first drink, including character-themed drinks.

Reservation slots last for 90 minutes, and even if you are late for your start time, you still have to finish at the designated ending time. Reception starts 15 minutes before the reservation window, so it is better to come a little early. While waiting in the line to enter, your entry ticket will be confirmed, and you have to make your first drink order. Because this is done on paper without any photos, it is better to know in advance what drink you want to order.

Finally, most of the current menu and drinks are going to change to a new selection on April 5th for the second half of the Final Fantasy VII Rebirth cafe event. Only the Cloud and Sephiroth drinks, and the omelette rice and meat bun meals are going to remain. All the current coasters and posters are also going to change to a new set. You can check what characters and designs are going to be available via the cafe's official website , along with the new menu. The good news is, the change makes a good excuse to go a second time to get new food and new characters. We definitely will be going one more time to get even more character coasters.

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is available now on PlayStation 5.

Phoenix landmark Barrio Cafe is closing at the end of May after more than two decades.

"After a lot of meditation and soul searching, I'm closing Barrio Cafe," chef Silvana Salcido Esparza told The Arizona Republic during an interview on March 20. "I gave you guys 22 years. I hope you came."

Esparza, one of the most well-known and outspoken chefs in Phoenix, opened Barrio Cafe on 16th Street in Phoenix in 2002 with $38,000. The restaurant ended up becoming one of the most influential, starting with a five-star review by The Republic's former food critic, Howard Seftel. And the chef became an icon of the local food scene in her own right, introducing the Valley to elevated, regional Mexican cuisines and being a voice for her community.

“I saw an opportunity to elevate popular perceptions of Mexican culture through my food,” she said ahead of her 2022 acceptance of the ASU MLK Jr. service award . “... at the Barrio Cafe, I was able to change perception merely with my cooking.”

Esparza has been a James Beard Best Chef Southwest semifinalist seven times and was a semifinalist for the national James Beard  Outstanding Chef award  in 2023.

2023 James Beard Awards: These Arizona chefs and restaurants are semifinalists. Here's the list

Barrio Cafe was more than a restaurant; it was a platform for change

Beyond the kitchen, Esparza is a fierce advocate for immigrant rights, women, Latino and LGBTQ+ communities. During the 2020 presidential election, she joined Biden's Latino leadership committee and hosted now-President Joe Biden and his running mate,  Vice President Kamala Harris, at Barrio Cafe .

"My last hurrah was feeding my community during COVID," she said. "That was my opus. That was my 'I love you' to Phoenix."

Esparza championed and mentored Phoenix artists and chefs, from recent "Chopped" grand champion chef Peter McQuaid to Jorge Picos of Estero Beach Tacos , whose truck was named best taco in Phoenix by readers in Top Taco 2023. "Articles can be written about you, books can be written and documentaries filmed," Picos wrote in a March 20 Instagram story. "What you have built for Mexican cuisine for Arizonans and the world is epic. You're a friend for life."

Closing Barrio Cafe marks the end of an era

It's not an overstatement to say that the closure of Barrio Cafe will be the end of an era in Phoenix dining. And it wasn't a decision Esparza took lightly.

"I have sarcoidosis. Stress kills me," Esparza explained. "I have to take care of my health and do things on my own terms."

Esparza plans to shutter the restaurant in the next few weeks. But she still owns the building and plans to put part of the proceeds of renting the space towards easing the transition financially for long-time staff members while they look for other work.

Esparza hugged Gabriella Bernard who's been working at the restaurant for 14 years. "I'm sorry I got old," she said through tears.

"What I've done here has been the best privilege, job, source of platform that I could ever dream for," she said. "But I have an urgency for writing and for family."

Life after Barrio Cafe

Though her iconic restaurant is closing, Esparza isn't going anywhere. "I need to focus on a part of me that I know I have to do and that's being a writer."

Her autobiographical book, "La Hija de la Chingada: Chronicles of a Mexican Chef in the U.S.A." goes on presale May 5, 2024. In it, she talks about her journey and delves into the history of the food she makes, championing the indigenous cooking upon which so many dishes were built.

And though Esparza isn't yet ready to reveal details, she feels like rather than closing Barrio Cafe, she is passing the torch to "the son I never knew I had," who will open a new restaurant concept in the space.

"He'll take ownership of our own roots, power and culture," she said. "That inspiration is for all the young chicanitos. Don't give up. It's your right. Own it. Get so big that other cultures can't appropriate you."

How to visit Barrio Cafe one last time

Barrio Cafe will remain open for regular service through May 31.

ESPEX 2024 Scheduled for April 19

ESPEX 2024

By Sherry DiBari

Photo caption: Engineering students presented their senior projects last year at ESPEX 2023, held in the Engineering Systems Building.

Dozens of senior engineering students from Old Dominion University will present their innovative and diverse projects at the 6th annual Batten College of Engineering and Technology Engineering Student Projects Expo (ESPEX). The event is scheduled for April 19 from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. and will take place at the Webb University Center - North Café.

The projects encompass a wide range of topics. For example, one project is a system designed to monitor the health of an aquaponics system – a unique integration of aquaculture (fish) and hydroponics (plants). Another project is a long-term collaboration with Super Radiator Coils (SRC), a Richmond, Virginia-based radiator manufacturing firm. This is the fifth project in which engineering technology students have helped the company improve their manufacturing processes.

Autonomous systems projects include underwater drones and aerial drones capable of networking and swarming, as well as an autonomous aerial drone engineered for vertical takeoff and landing.

The event will also showcase regional and community-based projects, with two groups of civil engineering and civil engineering technology students partnering with Hampton University architecture students to design flood resilience plans for the Campostella Heights and Oakleaf Forest neighborhoods in Norfolk, Virginia.

Typically, engineering students conceive their projects in the first semester of their senior year, progressing to construction and completion in the subsequent semester.

"ESPEX is a rich tradition in the college where our engineering students get to show off a little bit in front of our local and regional engineering employers and community. They all get a great opportunity to present their innovative work, demonstrating their dedication to solving real-world problems through creative solutions," said Jeff LaCombe, associate dean for Undergraduate and Graduate Education at the Batten College of Engineering and Technology. “I look forward to seeing all the diverse projects!”
