Sparks are a rock duo hailing from Los Angeles, California, USA who originally formed in 1968. The band, founded by brothers Ron Mael (keyboards) and Russell Mael (vocals), are known for being able to combine their unique eccentricities with sublime pop songwriting.

I think it’s safe to say that when a band influences Kurt Cobain, Duran Duran, Def Leppard, Bjork and ABBA simultaneously in their time, they’ve done something right. Those five artists are a mere fraction of the people who the Mael brothers have inspired in their time and even when giving them a cursory listen, it makes sense. This stems from the fact that Sparks are a deeply strange band, to the extent that Bob Harris, the BBC’s general music guru, called them a cross between Frank Zappa and The Monkees. From their bizarre lyrics and samples, to Russell Mael’s almost comical falsetto, they are a sign that a band or artist can be as weird as they please and, so long as they have the songs to back it up, people will still love them for a very long time.

For that reason alone, it’s understandable that such a diverse array of artists would be inspired by them. However, there’s a lot more to this band than strangeness. For example, people who know them for their post-punk hits in the early 80’s might be surprised to learn that they predate many of the bands that they inspired. The Mael’s spent their early teens in the golden age of the L.A club scene, catching the likes of The Doors, Love and The Beach Boys all essentially playing live on their doorstep. However, as the sixties went on and the pop scene started being taken over by folk, which they detested, they started listening to bands coming out of the U.K, like the Who, The Move and Pink Floyd.

Inspired by what they heard, they put together a band called Halfnelson in1968, who got the attention of another alternative rock icon of the future, Todd Rundgren. He was a producer at the time, and after he started championing the band they were signed to Bearsville Records. Their self-titled debut album was released soon after that but it wasn’t a hit, the band decided to go back to the drawing board, and after they renamed themselves Sparks, their fortunes started to change. Slowly, of course, their debut single as Sparks “Wonder Girl” was only a mild regional hit but it was a hit nonetheless.

It was their second album, 1973’s “A Woofer In Tweeter’s Clothing”, that really got things moving for the band and made them a name in their spiritual home country, the U.K. The success of the album there led to a tour and a residency at London’s world famous Marquee club, which led to one night where they were supported by a bunch of no-hopers by the name of Queen. By the end of the year, they’d had an appearance on The Old Grey Whistle Test and a record deal with Island Records. Their breakthrough album came the following year, preceded by the single “This Town Ain’t Big Enough For The Both Of Us”. No lesser name than Elton John bet its producer Muff Winwood that it wouldn’t make it into the charts. It hit number 2, and it’s still one of the most enduring hits of the early 70’s. I’m sure Elton’s still losing sleep over it.

The band had become a sensation in the U.K, appearing on the cover of Melody Maker and Record Mirror in quick succession with their single “Amateur Hour” also hitting the top 10 with panache. By 1975 the band finally returned to the states for a tour of the cities where, ironically enough, the news of Sparks’ success in the U.K had translated into major interest. The tour translated into a renewed interest in the band, with radio play and a slot on Dick Clark’s American Bandstand in the same year.

Since then, the band have continued to be alternative icons, never letting their music get stale or samey and never being afraid to change their own format to fit their new style. They continued having hits well into the 80’s, where their collaboration with Giorgio Moroder “The Number One Song In Heaven” was a top 20 hit and an inspiration for many a budding synth-pop group. Even thirty years after their heyday they were able to play an astonishing 20 nights at the 800 capacity Islington Academy in London, where they played each of their studio albums in full on every night, before premiering their new album at the time with a sold out show at Shepherd’s Bush Empire. Sparks then, truly a band who will never be replicated, and we should all be thankful to have them. One to see as soon as possible.

Over the course of a career that has now spanned more than forty years, Los Angeles brothers Ron and Russell Mael have enjoyed a great many plaudits for their work as Sparks, but perhaps none as great as being described by legendary Vancouver music journalist Nardwuar the Human Serviette as his favourite band of all time. It’s not difficult to understand why the famously verbose Canadian would take to Sparks, either; their lyrical style is intelligent, witty and often highly complex, whilst their stage shows have always been theatrical, littered with the band’s own trademarks - they might well be the ultimate cult band, in that respect. They’re still a going concern today, too, with 2009 seeing the release of their latest album; The Seduction of Ingmar Bergman is a fantasy pop opera, just in case you wondered if the Mael brothers had become less experimental with age. Later this year, too, they’ll return to the UK to play their seminal third record Kimono My House in full, for two nights at London’s Barbican Centre; fans should expect a typically idiosyncratic show, with a slew of other cuts likely to be thrown in alongside the album and a stage show that does justive to both the record and the band themselves.

Sparks' performance at the O2 Institute was the epitome of power, energy and passion. Backed by a superbly professional and tight band the brothers Mael worked their way through several songs from their recent album interspersed with classics from their extensive back-catalogue. Russell's energy enthused a tightly packed audience - anyone would be grateful of even half his energy levels for a man of his age - whilst brother Ron was as straight-faced as ever...at least until his customary dance routine!

By the end of the night the Maels appeared genuinely moved by the response that they had so deservedly earned whilst the venue itself provided the perfect blend of size and intimacy.

A band not to be missed.

Sparks were the first band I ever recorded on a mono tape recorder as a kid. The same feeling returned when Sparks performed their old classics at Birmingham Institute and their recent stuff was just as excellent. Delivered by a group who obviously give it their all and give a damn about why they bothered to stand on a stage in the first place. Their passion really showed. Love them the more for having seen them.

It's good to see and hear Sparks back in action with a new album after a long hiatus.

A packed Shepherds Bush theatre were treated to many tracks from the new album as well as the old favourites.

The band were tight, the audience wild with enthusiasm for what can only be described as a memorable show and appropriate home coming to their adopted country.

Truly different.

My first Sparks show! With very high audience rapport, a super tight band and killer tunes, the brothers kept old and new fans enthralled for over ninety minutes. A highly memorable night, in the words of Russell himself before the encore.

‘The Gift’: The Jam Leave Fans A Lasting Farewell Present

Sparks Tour 2023–which includes a pair of sold-out headline shows at London’s Royal Albert Hall on May 29 and 30–celebrates the imminent arrival of Sparks’ 26th studio album, The Girl Is Crying In Her Latte . I shopped at Family Dollar and saw why the chain is struggling and shuttering stores

  • About 1,000 Family Dollar stores will close in the coming years, parent company Dollar Tree said this month.
  • The chain has struggled over the last several years.
  • I went to a Family Dollar store and found lots of theft deterrents plus higher prices than nearby grocery stores.

Insider Today

Dollar stores have popped up almost everywhere in the US over the last decade or so. But Family Dollar is about to shrink.

The chain will close about 1,000 stores in the coming years, parent company Dollar Tree said last week. That's about 13% of all Family Dollar stores in the US.

Dollar Tree executives pointed to several reasons for closing the stores on last week's earnings call. Some are facing stiff competition from rivals. Some are coping with high rates of retail theft , even though Dollar Tree stores seem to have a better handle on the issue. And many are just less profitable for the company than Dollar Tree stores, the executives said.

It's been a rocky decade for Family Dollar. Rival Dollar Tree acquired the company in 2015, but it has struggled to run the retailer.

Family Dollar shoppers' budgets have also been hit hard by rising prices and cuts to food assistance benefits like SNAP. "Persistent inflation and reduced government benefits continue to pressure the lower income consumers that comprise a sizable portion of Family Dollar's customer base," Dollar Tree CEO Richard Dreiling said on the company's recent earnings call.

To find out what Family Dollar is like for shoppers, I headed to a store in Maryland, just outside of Washington, DC, a few days after Dollar Tree made the store closing announcement. A spokesperson for Dollar Tree and Family Dollar did not respond to a request for comment on my findings.

Here's what I found:

Do you work for Family Dollar, Dollar Tree, or Dollar General and have a story idea to share? Reach out to this reporter at [email protected]

I visited a Family Dollar store in Mt. Rainier, Maryland.

sparks tour merch

Just a few minutes' drive from DC proper, this store is located in a strip mall between a check-cashing shop and a beauty supply store.

A sale sign in the front door got my hopes up for deals.

sparks tour merch

Some dollar stores have had trouble selling all the inventory that their distribution centers send, especially seasonal items. I wondered if this store would be similarly overrun with stuff.

As I walked in, the cashier told me to put my bag behind the counter.

sparks tour merch

She was nice about it, but it was a sign that management at this Family Dollar store was worried about patrons stealing. Theft is particularly bad at some Family Dollar stores, executives said on the latest Dollar Tree earnings call.

The bag policy was just the first sign that theft was a concern for this Family Dollar.

sparks tour merch

As I headed toward the candy selection, I spied a security camera suspended on a pole above the aisle.

This camera also played a recorded message to remind customers of its existence.

sparks tour merch

Periodically, I'd hear "Welcome to Family Dollar, thank you for shopping with us" play from a speaker on the camera.

Retailers of all kinds have talked about a rise in theft at their stores over the past few years.

There were also anti-theft tags on many items, including household basics.

sparks tour merch

At least these bottles of laundry detergent weren't locked up like many items are at other retailers.

Overall, the store was well-stocked compared to other dollar stores I've visited in the past.

sparks tour merch

One Dollar General store with a focus on fresh foods contained a lot of empty or near-empty shelves when I visited last year, for instance.

There were lots of products that imitated name-brands at cheaper prices, such as these Girl Scout cookie look-alikes.

sparks tour merch

I was reminded immediately of the Caramel deLites or Samoas sold by Girl Scouts when I saw this box. "Eatz" is a Family Dollar store brand. At $2.35 a box, they were also cheaper than the real thing, which costs $6 — though I don't think my local scout troop benefited from my purchase of Family Dollar's version.

But not of Family Dollar's store-brand versions were a good deal. One example: Mac and cheese.

sparks tour merch

A box of mac from Chestnut Hill, another Family Dollar store brand, was 90 cents. That seemed like a good deal at first, given that the store was selling the name-brand Kraft version for $1.40 a box.

At a nearby grocery store, the equivalent Mac and cheese was much cheaper.

sparks tour merch

The store-brand mac and cheese was just 57 cents a box at an Aldi located just a 10-minute walk from the Family Dollar I visited.

It's a good example of how dollar stores are often more expensive than supermarkets.

sparks tour merch

Walmart and Aldi had the lowest grocery prices , analysts at Bank of America found in a study of grocery options in the Dallas area last year. Ironically, Dollar General hiked prices the more than other retailers in the region in response to rising inflation, the study found.

Besides food, there was also a respectable selection of apparel.

sparks tour merch

These shoes were just $5 a pair. Many of them resembled clogs from Crocs.

Most dollar stores I've been to didn't have as wide a selection of clothing as this Family Dollar did.

sparks tour merch

Aside from fresh food, this Family Dollar store had the same range of items you'd expect at a big box store like Walmart — just with a much narrower selection to pick from.

I also found some strange items as I walked around the store.

sparks tour merch

I'm not sure who these pocket-sized strips of duct tape are meant to appeal to, but I passed on them.

I found some clutter in the aisles, but it wasn't as bad as it could have been.

sparks tour merch

Other dollar stores that I've visited over the last year, particularly Dollar General stores, have been hard to walk around due to all the unpacked merchandise blocking the aisles. Some Dollar General stores have even had to shut down temporarily in order to clean up.

Cookies and mac and cheese in hand, I headed toward the checkout.

sparks tour merch

There was just one person running the checkout lane that was open, but I didn't have to wait more than a few minutes to pay.

The cashier told me to use "exact change or pay by card" as she rang up my purchases.

sparks tour merch

As I pulled out a few dollar bills and dug around in my wallet for some quarters, she clarified that she could give me change for a small purchase. She said her concern was customers trying to break $100 and $50 notes and taking all of her smaller bills.

Then, I grabbed my bag from behind the register, stashed my purchases inside, and headed out of the store.

I'm probably not going back to a Family Dollar store anytime soon.

sparks tour merch

Overall, the Family Dollar store I visited was one of the better-stocked dollar stores I've been to lately.

But the fact that some grocery basics cost more than discount grocers means that I probably won't be shopping there again. The anti-theft measures also made it feel like I was a shoplifting suspect the second I walked in the front door.

I might feel differently if this store was the only option near me.

sparks tour merch

The Family Dollar I visited was in a suburban area with several other retailers nearby, from an Aldi to a Latin American grocery store.

But Family Dollar and other dollar stores often end up being the only shopping option for some communities, especially small, rural ones. That's led some of those towns and municipalities to push back on dollar store openings.

If other Family Dollar stores are like this, it's not hard to see why the chain is shuttering some locations.

sparks tour merch

Not all Family Dollar stores are like this. One I visited last year was the cleanest, most welcoming dollar store I've ever seen.

But some stores — and elements of the brand's strategy, such as pricing — might need to be revisited.

7 things this Swiftie noticed while streaming the 'Eras Tour (Taylor's Version)' on Disney Plus

“Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour (Taylor's Version)” is finally on Disney Plus and fans have been "Ready For It" for ages. While the movie is fun for hardcore Swifties and Taylor Swift tourists alike, the show is filled to the brim with Easter eggs from past tours, music videos, songs, fandom moments and traditions from the past 15 years.

You can certainly enjoy the movie without knowing all of the intricacies of the costumes and sets, the significance of friendship bracelets, the ever-evolving surprise songs, and the “Long Live” tea, but the concert takes on a whole new meaning when you dive deep into the lore — but there’s a lot of it. Rather than taking a self-guided tour through the waters of Swift’s expansive career, we’re here to fill in the Blank Spaces you may have after watching the movie — or clue you in on things to look out for when you watch (or rewatch).

She wears short skirts, Swift wears T-shirts

The Eras Tour spans 10 albums and a career of 15 years comprising dozens of costumes, tours, music videos, fan traditions, sets and songs. That’s a lot to cover. And as most people know, Swift is the Easter egg queen. She just loves hiding little details and callbacks for fans to find. Tours are no different. Though it would take eons to work through every relevant set and outfit, there are quite a few standout references that non-Swifties may not get.

First, let’s talk about the massive stage, which shifts between the Eras house from the “Lover” music video and the “Folklore” cabin from “Cardigan.” Anyone who was around for the “Fearless” days will probably recognize Swift’s bedazzled guitar when she performs the title song during the Eras movie. That guitar is actually a recreation of Swift’s original “Fearless” guitar superglued by her parents the day before the Eras Tour kicked off. Celebrities are just like us. They also have their parents do their science projects the night before the fair even though they could easily outsource that activity. You’ll also notice her patented heart-shaped hand gesture that’s become another tour tradition.

Taylor Swift has earned her Big Reputation and she wants fans to know it. If you recognize her snake body suit in the “Reputation” portion of the film, that’s because it’s a recreation of the exact outfit she wore during the “Rep” tour. The massive special effects snake also pays homage to the iconic stage design of that larger-than-life tour. Also, make sure to pay attention to the glass boxes in “Look What You Made Me Do.” The dancers wear a bunch of Taylor outfit dupes throughout the Eras — between her “Red” ringmaster look and her alter-ego’s cheerleading uniform from “You Belong With Me.”

Swift did a bunch of photoshoots when “Red” was released. One of the most popular (and easily recreated) looks was a white T-shirt with the phrase, “Not a lot going on at the moment.” Swift puts a spin on that look during her “Red” section of the tour with her opening song, “22.” The revamped shirt pokes fun at how busy the singer is these days with the sentiment, “A lot going on at the moment.”

If you’ve ever wanted to see Swift swing fluorescent golf clubs while she beats the crap out of a fake car, pay attention to “Blank Space.” She and her dancers recreate the iconic scene from the OG music video in the self-parody song that mocks how people view her dating history.

Moving onto “Midnights,” the entire floor graphics are reminiscent of Swift’s “Lavender Haze” music video topped off with a similar fuzzy purple coat. When it comes to “Karma,” you might catch that all of the dancers’ fringe jackets are Eras colors.

Long live 'Long Live'

Don’t bring up the song “Long Live” to any Swifties who went to the Eras Tour prior to the release of “Speak Now (Taylor’s Version).” We will genuinely cry. “Long Live” is the quintessential Swiftie song because Swift wrote it for fans to illustrate how Swifties are just as integral to tours as the singer. It’s basically a love letter to the fan base, so we all feel like everyone else got a Valentine’s Day card from Swift while we got shafted.

There are a whole lot of logistics around Swift rerecording her albums and owning her own music, but both “1989” and “Reputation” are heavily represented in the tour and neither of them were rerecorded by the time of the first show. In fact, she announced the re-records of “Speak Now” and “1989” during tour. So it’s hard for the bulk of Swifties who survived the original Great Ticketmaster War to watch everyone else get the tour song we were all desperate to hear. We did not have the time of our lives fighting dragons with you, Ticketmaster.

Moping aside, everyone watching on Disney Plus gets to see this joyous masterpiece. Though the bulk of the surprise songs play after the credits, “Long Live” was added in after “Enchanted” — where it would have been during the concert. Spurned Swifties from the tour were pretty salty when the live version of the song didn’t play in theaters, either, but at least we have it for streaming. Also, make sure to take a look at the guitar Swift uses for the number. The blue koi fish guitar is the very same one she used during the “Speak Now” World Tour when she performed the song “Last Kiss.”

“Our Song” makes it an actual Eras Tour

Swifties collectively have one major gripe about the Eras Tour: It’s not actually an Eras Tour because it doesn’t feature every era unless you’re lucky with the secret songs. While “Speak Now” got pretty shafted in the original lineup with just “Enchanted,” Swift’s first self-titled album (known in the fandom as “Debut”) is nowhere to be found.

Luckily for us watching at home and anyone in the crowd during night two of the LA show, the song “Our Song” makes it a full Eras experience. It’s one of the most beloved jams from Swift’s debut album, and it would have been a perfect song to have on the regular set list to honor every era. But at least we have it in streaming form (like the rest of the surprise songs, it wasn’t featured in the theatrical release).

1, 2, 3 ... Let’s go b****!

Taylor Swift and Swifties have an array of long-standing traditions together — between drawing 13s on their wrists and lyrics on their arms — concerts are a collaborative experience. Sometimes, tour traditions come from a single person in one brief moment of time that‘s captured forever. Fans will pretty much do anything to get noticed during shows, which is why a Swiftied named Emily Valencia yelled, “1, 2, 3 ... Let’s go b****!” at the “Reputation” tour during the slow ballad “Delicate” (which is kind of a weird choice for that hype sentiment). But back in those days, Swift and her team would pick out fans from the crowd to meet her after the show.

After posting her unnoticed chant on TikTok, the video went viral and it’s since become a tour tradition any time Swift performs “Delicate.” You’ll even notice Swift counting down to the crowd after the lyric “But you can make me a drink” to kickstart the chant. And don’t worry, Valencia got her IRL moment with Swift when the singer invited her to the “Lover” secret session (which were pre-release listening parties Swift hosted for fans pre-”Folklore”). Swift even parroted the chant to Valencia when she met her. So, mission more than accomplished.

You’re not on your own, kid

At this point, the Taylor Swift friendship bracelet phenomenon is pretty well-known, but not everyone is hip to its origin. Bracelet swapping at Swift concerts and events is a new post-”Midnights” tradition that started as somewhat of an internet joke and became something of a do-or-die sensation (as is the case with most Swiftie traditions).

Swift’s song “You’re On Your Own, Kid” inspired the crafty bracelet swapping with the line, “So make the friendship bracelets, take the moment and taste it, you’ve got no reason to be afraid, you’re on your own, kid.” Swifties took the tradition and ran with it.

Among those bracelet-loving Swifties is Travis Kelce, Swift’s NFL boyfriend. He tried shooting his shot with Swift by putting his number on a friendship bracelet, but never got a chance to give it to her. Yet his “call me” plea went viral, and Swift finally got her “Fearless” football moment with her now-boyfriend. Kelce isn’t the only celeb to play into the ritual. *NSYNC presented a rather pretty set of friendship bracelets to Swift at the VMAs .

So, when you’re watching the Eras Tour movie and you notice a ton of people wearing friendship bracelets, just know that there’s some pretty deep (folk)lore that goes along with it. Just don’t try deciphering some of the long acronym bracelets if you want to keep your sanity. Pay attention to the credit sequence, too, as names are written on friendship bracelet beads while “Long Live (Taylor’s Version)” plays in the background.

Hats off to Gianna Bryant

Swift picks someone to give her classic hat to at every tour stop during her opening “Red” number “22.”. Gianna Bryant gets that honor during the Los Angeles concert shown in the movie. L.A. was the perfect place to honor Kobe Bryant’s daughter, as the acclaimed basketball player once presented a banner to Swift for the “Most sold out shows” at Staples Center in 2015. While Swift has since graduated from basketball and hockey arenas to massive stadiums, it was still a special moment between the two.

Just don’t ask L.A. Kings fans how they feel about the banner. Los Angeles hockey fans were convinced that the banner was bringing bad luck to the team during a rough rebuild period, demanding that it get covered up during Kings games. The organization acquiesced, but shockingly enough, the team didn’t magically start winning. The bizarre one-way feud (some) Kings fans had against Swift (who’s been to games before!) was so widespread that the Arizona Coyotes trolled the Kings with a replica banner over the Kings’ tunnel. Of course, the Kings then congratulated them on winning their first banner.

Sufficed to say, there’s a lot of lore attached to the infamous banner, and Swift and the Bryants have a long LA-based history of supporting each other. It’s only fitting that Swift would return the banner gesture with a sweet gesture of her own. There’s a whole lotta love between Swift and Gianna in that moment, which goes well with Gianna’s sequined “Lover” vibes.

Half-moon eyes, no bad surprises

When it comes to the theatrical release of the Eras Tour movie, quite a few songs didn’t make the final cut: “The Archer” from “Lover,” “Wildest Dreams” from “1989,” “Long Live” from “Speak Now,” and “Cardigan” from “Folklore.” While the former three made it into the digital rented version of the show, “Cardigan” was absent — until now. Unfortunately for “Evermore” fans, “No Body, No Crime” is missing from all three iterations of the movie. Fans have often teased Swift about “Evermore” being her forgotten child. She may deny it but the evidence is pretty sus. However, if “Evermore” is forgotten, then “Debut” is marooned at sea.

Of course, the regularly scheduled tour songs aren’t the only bonuses in the Disney Plus iteration. Swift performs two surprise songs at every show before the “Midnights” set — one on piano and one on acoustic guitar. She tries to play each song only once before recycling them unless she messes one up. In that case, she throws the song back in the pile. Disney+ viewers aren’t just being treated to songs from one night. Nope, we’ve got all six from the first three stops on the LA tour.

“Our Song” (aucoustic guitar) from LA night two and “You’re on Your Own, Kid” (piano) from night three play after the “1989” set like the surprise songs do in the actual tour. Yet we get six of them after the movie’s credits in a section labeled “The Acoustic Collection.”

First, Swift performs the “Speak Now (Taylor’s Version)” vault track, “I Can See You” on guitar. Fun fact: She teamed up with ex-boyfriend (and current friend) Taylor Lautner and “Speak Now” music video alums Joey King and Presley Cash to carry out the heist sequence for the music video.

The Acoustic Collection is separated into guitar and piano sections rather than the order she performed them in during the shows. So she continues with “Death by a Thousand Cuts” from “Lover” followed by “Our Song” from “Debut.” For the piano portion of the Acoustic Collection, Swift plays “You Are in Love” from “1989 along with “Maroon” and “You’re on Your Own Kid” from “Midnights” to honor one of the tours most iconic new traditions. The line “You’re on your own kid, you always have been” may be a little bit of a bummer lyric to end the movie on. But then we get a cute little bow, so it’s perfectly fine.

Kyle Rittenhouse speech at University of Memphis sparks outrage

The 21-year-old gun rights activist, who was acquitted after fatally shooting two in Kenosha unrest, was met with student protests

Kyle Rittenhouse, a 21-year-old gun rights activist who was acquitted after shooting dead two people and injuring another during racial justice protests in 2020, sparked fierce outrage during a speech at the University of Memphis.

On Wednesday, Rittenhouse was met with widespread student protests as he spoke at a campus event organized by the university’s chapter of Turning Point USA, a conservative student organization.

Rittenhouse’s speech topics included the importance of the second amendment and “the lies of Black Lives Matter”, according to event details.

Pictures posted online showed students protesting Rittenhouse’s appearance with signs that said “Murderers don’t belong here!” and “Where’s the tears now, lil boy?” – an apparent reference to Rittenhouse’s emotional sobs during his murder trial in 2021.

In August 2020, Rittenhouse, who was 17 years old at the time, traveled from his home in Antioch, Illinois, armed with an AR-15-style rifle to aid a Kenosha-based militia that was calling for protection for businesses against protesters supporting the Black Lives Matter movement.

At the protests , Rittenhouse shot and killed 36-year-old Joseph Rosenbaum before shooting and killing 26-year-old Anthony Huber. Rittenhouse also wounded Gaige Grosskreutz, a 26-year-old protester and volunteer medic at the time who carried his own gun.

Following a widely watched and controversial trial in which he repeatedly claimed self-defense, Rittenhouse was acquitted in November 2021. His acquittal was largely regarded by critics as a revelation of the favorable treatment from law enforcement towards white self-styled militant vigilantes, in contrast to the treatment meted out to racial justice protestors.

The University of Memphis said it was legally obligated to allow Rittenhouse to speak despite the widespread protests.

“The upcoming event at the University of Memphis featuring Kyle Rittenhouse is not sponsored by the university. A registered student organization, University of Memphis TPUSA, is hosting the event. Under the first amendment and Tennessee’s Campus Free Speech Act, the University of Memphis cannot legally prohibit such events from being hosted by a registered student organization,” it said , the Commercial Appeal reported.

Speaking to WREG, one student said : “They’re portraying him like this icon for the gun people … We already have enough gun violence in Memphis itself, so having this guy come here and spread racist views and also talking about how we need more guns on the street … I think it’s awful, just baffling, that they allow this. Because this is borderline free speech, but this is more toward hate speech.”

Another student told WMC-TV: “We’re also a city that is predominately Black and we’re also a city that is grappling with gun violence … We are actively giving a platform to a white nationalist.”

One video posted online showed students booing and walking out of the auditorium as Rittenhouse spoke. Another video showed a student yelling to Rittenhouse: “What lie? What lie? Tell me the lies of Black Lives Matter? Tell me the lies you’re [going to] talk about?”

In a separate video , a student was seen confronting Rittenhouse, who was on stage with a dog, about comments made by Turning Point USA’s founder Charlie Kirk.

after newsletter promotion

“The CEO of Turning Point USA, Charlie Kirk, has said a lot of racist things,” the student said from his seat.

“What racist things has Charlie Kirk said?” Rittenhouse replied before repeating his question.

“He says that we shouldn’t celebrate Juneteenth, we shouldn’t celebrate Martin Luther King Day – we should be working those days – he called [supreme court justice] Ketanji Brown Jackson an affirmative action hire, he said all this nonsense about George Floyd and he said he’d be scared if a Black pilot was on a plane. Does that not seem racist?” the student said.

In response, Rittenhouse said: “I don’t know anything about that.”

“Well, after all the things I just told you, would you consider that hate speech?” the student asked.

“I’m not going to comment on that,” Rittenhouse said, prompting cries from the audience.

Following the event, Rittenhouse posted a video on X, saying : “Great event! I think it’s funny that a lot of the media is saying that we got booed off stage. In reality we did a hard cut off time and just happened to leave at that.”

Kamala Harris marks first visit to Puerto Rico as vice president, drawing some protests

Vice President Kamala Harris visited Puerto Rico on Friday as part of a whirlwind trip to tout the federal aid the U.S. territory has received following deadly hurricanes and to attend a Democratic fundraiser.

Her visit comes days after President Biden visited Western states in a campaign tour targeting Latino voters ahead of the November general election. Although those in Puerto Rico cannot vote in U.S. presidential elections despite being American citizens, more than 5 million Puerto Ricans live on the U.S. mainland.

Accompanying Harris for the roughly five-hour visit to the island were Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm and Housing and Urban Development Deputy Secretary Adrianne Todman. Welcoming them was Gov. Pedro Pierluisi, a Democrat whose New Progressive Party has long pushed for statehood.

Harris’ first stop was to visit a new home in the northern municipality of Canóvanas, near the capital. It had been destroyed after Hurricane Maria hit the island in September 2017 as a powerful Category 4 storm, killing nearly 3,000 people in its aftermath.

En route, the motorcade passed people holding their phones up as it went by. Some onlookers leaned out of their cars to take photos as they waited for the motorcade to pass, while others stood outside businesses and homes as the motorcade continued. One girl held a sign imploring help to fix her home.

“I see we are making a difference. There is still more work to do,” Harris said as she stood on the lawn of the new home draped with a large Puerto Rican flag. “We are ambitious. Yes, we are impatient.”

It was Harris’ first visit to Puerto Rico as vice president. She visited as a U.S. senator in 2017 after Hurricanes Irma and Maria pummeled the island.

Harris said one of the ongoing challenges Puerto Rico faces is intermittent energy sources, with outages still occurring daily since Maria destroyed the power grid. She noted that the federal government has provided some $3 billion in reliable energy sources, including rooftop solar panels. It also shipped mega-generators last year to minimize outages.

“[This] is about an upgrade on quality of life and just the well-being and dignity of each family to be able to satisfy their basic needs,” she said, adding that hurricane resistance technology is being used. “Puerto Rico taught us some lessons.”

Meanwhile, Todman said that more than 6,000 homes have been repaired and more than 3,500 new units built since the devastating storm.

“It’s undeniable that more work remains to be done,” she said.

Reconstruction in the years following Maria was slow, in part given the spending restrictions that the Trump administration implemented at the time.

During Harris’ visit Friday, Pierluisi thanked her and Biden for their help: “They’re with us in connection with this reconstruction.”

Hours before Harris’ arrival, a couple of dozen protesters gathered in Puerto Rico’s capital to decry the island’s territorial status and demand a cease-fire in the Gaza Strip.

“We find her presence disrespectful,” said Joselyn Velázquez, a protest spokeswoman, as a group around her waved Palestinian flags.

Nearby, one demonstrator stood on a U.S. flag while others gathered additional American flags and set them on fire.

“She is not welcome here,” said one protester.

After visiting the home in Canóvanas, Harris stopped by a community center in San Juan where a handful of protesters gathered, yelling, “Yankee, go home!” as supporters chanted, “USA! USA!” One protester held a sign that said “Kamala Harris war criminal.”

Harris later spoke at a campaign reception before flying back to the U.S. mainland Friday evening.

She addressed about a couple of dozen attendees gathered at an upscale apartment complex owned by developer Nicholas Prouty, who hosted the event. Harris thanked him and Pierluisi, noting that the governor “does not pass up the opportunity” to have a list of what Puerto Rico needs. “Mad respect,” she said.

Turning to the general election, Harris said, “We are going to win,” adding that “everything is at stake.”

“What we are looking at is fundamentally an election that’s going to require us each to answer a question,” Harris said. “What kind of country and world do we want to live in?”

Harris then talked about what she sees as Republicans’ “full-on attacks on fundamental rights,” adding, “But the thing about being a role model is people watch what you do to see if it matches what you say.”

She described Donald Trump, the presumptive Republican nominee, as someone who has expressed admiration of dictators and “someone who has, speaking of Puerto Rico, used words like ‘dirty’ and ‘poor’ and ‘corrupt.’”
