Rennes is a multi-faceted city of many influences, a pleasantly sized city with a strong Breton character. A lively, student city, a hot spot for food lovers and host to a number of festivals all year round. The economic and cultural capital of Brittany has also managed to retain its small-town atmosphere, where everything can be done on foot. With its pedestrianised streets, squares, monuments, colourful half-timbered houses and lively terraces, Rennes will charm you with the originality of its heritage and the hospitality of its inhabitants.

Rennes also lies at the crossroads of the region’s main cycling routes. Its privileged location makes Rennes the Goldilocks of tourist destinations: “just right” for discovering all the treasures of Brittany.

Where you can stay in Rennes

Hotels and accommodation to suit every taste

In Rennes, you’ll find a wide range of hotels and accommodation to suit all tastes and budgets. The youth hostel is located on the banks of the canal along the V42 green cycle route to Saint-Malo, not far from the Gayeulles campsite, which is set in a huge park close to the green route. Other establishments are also very affordable in terms of rates, such as the riverside Chouettes Hostel, which has shared dormitories, one of which is reserved for girls. When it comes to unusual accommodation, there are several places you won’t want to miss: the Mama Shelter, located at the heart of the historic center, and the Magic Hall, both of which offer highly original decor and an ideal location.

For lovers of relaxation, there are several 4- and 5-star spa hotels with swimming pools and wellness areas to choose from: the BW Premier Collection Saint-Antoine hôtel & Spa, the Novotel Spa and the Balthazar Hôtel & Spa, all just a 5-minute walk from the train station. Located a little further from the centre but accessible by metro, the BW Plus Hôtel Isidore and the Hôtel LeCoqGadby Hôtel & Spa are also ideal choices for those who enjoy massages, jacuzzi pools, hammams, etc.

You’ll find other beautiful residences around Rennes too: the Domaine de Cicé Blossac, a beautiful 4-star property nestled at the heart of a riverside golf course, the Château d’Apigné and its immense park, where you can live that authentic château lifestyle, and numerous charming B&Bs and gîtes if you’re looking to enjoy the peace and quiet of the Breton countryside.

A pleasantly sized city

In Rennes, everything can be done on foot or by metro

If you want to get around Rennes, nothing beats walking. The historic center is like a village. It takes just 20 minutes to get from the train station to the tourist office, where you’ll find a number of hotels. Rennes also has two metro lines that can take you from one end of the city to the other in less than 15 minutes. Finally, the day and night bus network and self-service bicycles complete the very comprehensive and safe transport network. Tickets for the bus and metro network cost €1.70 for one hour of unlimited travel across the entire network. There’s no need to buy a ticket – you can pay directly with your bank card at the entrance gates. Other day packages are available, with special rates for groups or families.

Rennes has two metro lines (a and b) that can take you across the whole city in just 15 minutes. In the historic centre, a free electric shuttle bus helps those who have trouble walking to get around.

Bus routes connect the airport to all parts of the metropolitan area, and provide easy access to all neighbourhoods, day and night. Taxi ranks are located just outside the TGV station, where you’ll also find a number of car rental companies (on level 0 towards the West exit). Tickets are valid for the entire bus and metro network, and also give free access to park-and-ride facilities at the city gates.

Last but not least, the Star network offers a self-service bike rental service from €1 per hour (and €2 for 24 hours). There are 50 stations throughout the city where you can rent or return the bikes. Right next to the bus station, the Maison du vélo (15 bis place de la gare) also offers short-term bike rentals.

Questions you may have before coming to Rennes.

What’s the weather like in Rennes?

The Breton climate is mild and temperate. Summer is generally cooler than in other French regions. In winter, sub-zero temperatures are rare. Generally speaking, the weather in Rennes, like everywhere else in Brittany, is quite changeable. It’s not uncommon to have alternating rain and clear skies in the same day, so it’s a good idea to bring a light rain jacket just in case. In autumn, the region is occasionally swept by ocean storms that are more spectacular than they are dangerous. Spring is particularly pleasant, with cool mornings and pleasant afternoon temperatures. Across the entire year, average temperatures in Rennes are around 13 degrees. Excluding heatwaves, summer temperatures fluctuate between 20 and 25 degrees Celsius, or even higher.

What are the local culinary specialities?

If there’s one local speciality you really must try in Brittany, it’s galettes de blé noir (savoury) and crêpes au froment (sweet). In Rennes, there are almost forty crêperies where you can sample these delights. These are traditional, inexpensive restaurants that serve dishes for the whole family. But Rennes’ signature speciality is the galette saucisse: a tasty pork sausage wrapped in a buckwheat pancake. It’s a kind of hot dog served with Breton sauce, and usually accompanied by mustard and onion confit. A popular dish that can be enjoyed on the street or at the market, and which has another advantage: it only costs between €2.50 and €3. To be enjoyed without moderation. In Rennes, you’ll also find the Brittany’s finest local produce being served the restaurants: seafood and produce from local farms, with a higher proportion of organic produce than the rest of France.

When is the best time to visit Rennes?

Rennes can be enjoyed all year round, with a cultural or music festival taking place nearly every week. The liveliest times are at the end of the year, in December, when the Trans Musicales music festival, Christmas markets, outdoor lighting displays, huge projections onto the town hall and end-of-year shows all take place. During the summer months of June, July and August, you can enjoy major contemporary art exhibitions as part of Exporama, screenings at the Parlement de Bretagne and many other free festivals (Transat en ville and Tombées de la nuit). September is also a busy time for cultural events, with several film and music festivals and heritage days taking place, when you can visit many monuments free of charge. Spring is the ideal time for cycling, walking along the canals and strolling through the flower gardens (Le Thabor, Parc Oberthür, Prairies Saint-Martin, Jardin Saint-Georges).

What languages are spoken in Brittany?

The official language in Brittany and Rennes is French. The Breton language is still very much alive in the region. In the part of Haute-Bretagne where Rennes is located, the traditional language is called Gallo. If you don’t speak French, Breton, you’ll encounter plenty of English speakers due to the large student population and the region’s cultural proximity to Great Britain. Last but not least, at the Tourist Office, our travel consultants can answer your questions in English, German or Spanish.

Where can I safely leave my luggage?

Hotels often offer to keep your luggage safe if you’ve stayed there. Additionally, many shops and businesses are part of the nannybag network, making it easy to reserve somewhere to store your luggage.

Who to call in an emergency

Emergency numbers in Rennes are the same as anywhere else in France:

  • 112, the European emergency number, even works without a SIM card.
  • Call 18 to contact the fire service.
  • Dial 15 to contact Samu (the emergency medical service).
  • Call 17 to contact the police and gendarmes.

One Day in Rennes | Top Things to Do in the City’s Historic Quarter

To be complete, a trip to Brittany needs to include at the very least a one-day stay in Rennes, the province’s historic and vibrant capital. The city’s old centre is a real gem with medieval buildings and architectural treasures waiting to be discovered. Not mentioning the city’s delicious and numerous crêperies serving the traditional and much loved crêpe.

With just one day in Rennes, focusing your time and attention on the historic part of Rennes is a must. From religious heritage to a former parliament, from awry half-timbered houses to a vivid French garden, Rennes will keep you moving the entire day.

Here are the top things to do in Rennes if you only spend one day in the Breton capital.

Essential Tips for Visiting Rennes

  • Getting There | Rennes has a small airport and it is possible to fly into it from several European cities and beyond. Visit Skyscanner to find the best routes and flight deals. You can then catch a city bus just outside the airport. Often the train will be your best option though. Rennes is well connected to Paris with frequent departures from the Paris Montparnasse train station and a journey time between 90 and 120 minutes.
  • Where to Stay | Best is to stay close to the old town to enjoy the city’s attractions, numerous restaurants and bustling night scene. I stayed at the Magic Hall , a great boutique hotel just 5 minutes away from the city’s historic cathedral. Read my review to know more about it!
  • Getting Around | Rennes has so much character that I walked everywhere so I wouldn’t miss anything of the city’s beautiful architecture. But make sure to bring comfortable walking shoes as you’ll cover quite a bit of ground from Rennes Cathedral to Parc du Thabor.
  • Planning | Buy a copy of The Rough Guide to Brittany & Normandy for expert tips to help you plan your trip to Brittany in detail. This guidebook is full of great advice.
  • Travel Insurance | You might want to buy travel insurance before visiting France. Heymondo has a nifty app to help you get the assistance you need while on the go.

Visit the Glorious Rennes Cathedral

Eat a delicious crêpe in old town rennes, lose yourself in parc du thabor, pay a visit to notre-dame-en-saint-melaine church, take a guided tour of the parliament of brittany, admire centuries-old half-timbered houses, shop for french brands in old rennes.

Built and rebuilt over the centuries, it took Rennes Cathedral quite a while to reveal itself at its best to worshippers and visitors alike. But the wait was certainly worth it and the result is quite spectacular.

Rennes Cathedral, Brittany, France

Dedicated to Saint Peter, Cathédrale Saint-Pierre de Rennes, as it is known locally, was built in Gothic style in the 12th century. In the 15th century, part of it collapsed. Completed in 1704, it took nearly two hundred years for the two towers of the front facade to be rebuilt in a beautiful neoclassical style.

But by the 18th century, the rest of the building was now crumbling. The decision was made to demolish and rebuild once more. Another century passed before the new cathedral was again ready to welcome its flock. In 1845, Rennes Cathedral was open for business once more.

Rennes Cathedral

Inside, the decor is all about gold, red and brown. Refurbished in the 19th century with gilt and stucco, the cathedral exhibits a lavish interior . With little light coming through the windows in the roof, eyes are drawn to the ceiling where the richly decorated barrel vault is covered in gold and paintings.

Forty-four ionic columns coated in reddish stucco support the vaulted ceiling on each side of the large nave, guiding visitors towards the centre of the cathedral. Rather than adding brightness to the rather dark interior, lamps hanging between the columns create an atmosphere of mysticism where modern Christianity and Antique Rome collide.

Visit St Peter Cathedral, top attraction in Rennes

Above the main door, the cathedral’s 19th century organ astonishes by its incredible size, occupying the entire wall, almost scratching the ceiling with its golden crowns. Also painted in gold, the towering dome shining a beam of light onto the altar will catch your imagination.

Crêpes are a French national dish but they are best eaten in Brittany. The Bretons have developed their own original recipes, giving the local crêpe its characteristic taste and texture.

Either made of wheat or buckwheat , crêpes in Brittany can be eaten as a main course or dessert, or both during the same meal! Garnished with ham, cheese, and sausages or chocolate, salty caramel on vanilla ice-cream, they come in infinite combinations for everyone to enjoy.

Rue Rallier du Baty, Rennes

Crêperies are not just a tourist attraction though. The dish is such an important part of the local life that every town in Brittany must have one. It is a cheap and delicious alternative to traditional restaurants, attracting people from every walk of life.

The city of Rennes is not short of crêperies. Often located in the medieval streets of old town Rennes, they each have their own personality and specialities. Organic or traditional, inventive in names and even shapes, crêpes in Rennes no doubt will surprise and satisfy visitors in search of some great local culinary experience.

Crepe Tatin in La Ville d'Ys, Rennes

If you don’t know where to start, read my article about some of the best crêperies in Old Rennes . I personally visited and tested the ones featured as I wandered Rennes’s historical streets. I might have gone overboard, but it was so worth it!

Formerly the gardens and orchard of Saint-Melaine abbey nearby, Parc du Thabor is now Rennes’s main public park. The quiet alleys and colourful flower beds make the park the ideal place to escape the city’s hustle and bustle. With the sun out, the well maintained lawns become the locals’ favourite place to chill out.

Parc du Thabor, among top things to do in Rennes

Parc du Thabor owes its current appearance from important work carried out in the 19th century. Built on a hill, the park features a French garden at its top. Vivid flowers planted in geometrically pleasing beds surround two antique bassins mirroring each other. In the background, the 19th century Orangerie fits in naturally, bordered by a collection of palm trees.

Parc du Thabor, Rennes

A botanical garden can be found at the eastern end of the park. Organised in circular plant beds, the garden is home to more than 3,000 species. The park also features an important rose garden , a cascade , large open lawns dotted with romantic statues and diverse species of trees.

First built as an abbey dedicated to Saint Melaine, a cleric believed to be Rennes’s first bishop who lived in the 6th century, Notre-Dame-en-Saint-Melaine is today a parish church worth a visit.

The building is the focal point of the medieval street of Saint-Melaine and dominates its surroundings from its position at the top of a hill. As you climb up the old cobbled street lined with centuries-old, timber-framed houses, your eyes set on the church’s tower in front of you and you can’t help but picture yourself in a medieval, religious procession heading to mass.

Rue Saint-Melaine, Rennes

The church’s current form dates back to the 11th-12th centuries, with important modifications being made in the 17th and 19th centuries. Its original Roman and Gothic styles still subsist today but neoclassical additions are obvious.

The most visible alteration was made in the bell tower, rebuilt in perfect symmetry in the 17th century and featuring cute carvings of little angels. Two centuries later, the construction of an octagonal tower crowned with a dome and a statue of the Virgin Mary at its top added to the church’s grandeur.

Mural in Notre-Dame-en-Saint-Melaine Church, Rennes

Inside, however, austerity dominates and sends visitors a few centuries back to medieval time. Rounded arches on large columns support a timber-framed ceiling characteristic of religious architecture in Brittany. However, remains of a mural painting from the 15th century brighten one of the walls as lights shining through stained-glass windows add their own colourful pattern to it.

Notre-Dame-en-Saint-Melaine, Rennes

Another impressive but more recent mural covers another entire wall. Painted in the 20th century in muted tones, this modern addition fits in surprisingly well with its historical surroundings. Not one but two great organs installed in the church during the 19th century can’t be ignored as their size is rather eye-catching.

Built in classical style during the 17th century, the Parliament of Brittany is Rennes’s pride. Financed entirely by local tax, the palace served mainly as a court of justice but also as a legislative organ in matters still under Brittany’s control since the Union of the Duchy with the French monarchy in 1532.

Parliament of Brittany, a guided tour not to be missed while in Rennes

The Parliament was abolished in 1790 during the French Revolution but the building still retained its judicial function. The building now houses Rennes’s Court of Appeals and visiting the premises is through guided tours only.

Surviving untouched from a fire that nearly destroyed the entire city in 1720, the Parliament is an architectural jewel from the Ancien Régime that symbolises the union of Brittany and France. Attentive eyes will catch emblems of both houses on the white facade and throughout the rich interior decoration.

Salle des pas-perdus, Parliament of Brittany, Rennes

The guided tour focuses on the 1st floor, the noble part of the building. Visitors are quickly taken aback by the sheer height of the vaulted ceiling in Salle des pas-perdus. The former waiting room displays the French and Breton coats of arms in golden painted medallions in its magnificent wooden ceiling .

But these are just a teaser for what comes next. The guided tour takes visitors to a series of sumptuously decorated rooms that are a delight for the eyes. The numerous allegorical evocations of Justice framed by flamboyant gilded wooden coffered ceilings are especially breathtaking.

Parliament of Brittany, Rennes, France. Among the best things to do in Rennes.

Keeping your eyes off these monumental ceilings could prove difficult, and you might finish the tour with a sore neck. A small price to pay to admire great examples of 17th century decor that have survived to this day and shouldn’t be missed while in Rennes.

One thing that is really striking in Rennes is the city’s rich medieval heritage. Half-timbered houses dating anywhere from the 15th to the 18th century still stand proudly, although askew, in many streets of Rennes.

Half-Timbered House in Rennes's Historic Quarter, Bretagne

Unfortunately, a dramatic fire in 1720 destroyed nearly all of them and the subsequent regulations to avoid a new disaster meant the remaining houses were butchered. But Rennes remains today the city in Brittany with the richest heritage in half-timbered houses. They give the city a character of familiarity and “bon vivre” that is really infectious.

Hiding behind Rennes Cathedral, Rue du Chapitre is one of these streets that have retained a characteristic medieval feel. Beautifully preserved half-timbered houses that have become the home of restaurants and boutiques line up this quiet cobbled street.

Rennes Historic Quarter

Rue Saint-Michel is another “hot spot” for half-timbered houses. Nicknamed “Drinker’s Alley”, the street is popular with students favouring the numerous bars that have taken residence in the old houses. Additionally, Rue Saint-Michel is also the only street in Rennes that has all its buildings made of wood.

Place des Lices is a square famous for its spectacular 17th century town houses crowned with sophisticated and majestic roofs, highlighting the important status of their original owners. Do not forget to visit postcard perfect Place du Champ-Jacquet too. Tall half-timbered houses, weakened by the extra openings made to incorporate more windows, lean against each-other like drunken friends.

Half-timbered Houses in Rennes

More houses can be seen in Rue Saint-Melaine, Rue Saint-Georges or Place Sainte-Anne . The best way to discover this wonderful heritage is to wander the streets of Old Rennes and get lost in it. An architectural gem is to be found at every turn. More information about the city’s beautiful medieval streets can be found in this article about Rennes historic centre .

Following the destruction of nearly all wooden framed houses in Rennes in the early 18th century, the city was rebuilt in stone. Large thoroughfares lined up with magnificent buildings in classic style emerged from the ashes.

Shopping in Rennes, France

The streets found between Rennes Cathedral and the Parliament of Brittany were remodelled in the new fashion. Elegant arched windows now run along the new streets like Rue de la Monnaie or Rue de Toulouse, giving the area a sense of unity and harmony.

Mostly pedestrianised today, the neighbourhood has become one of Rennes’s prime shopping districts . Outlets from International brands can of course be found here. But more interestingly, it is a chance to taste French fashion with countless boutiques to explore in this upmarket part of Rennes.

Rennes, France

From shoes to clothes and jewellery, this part of historic Rennes is a mecca for those looking to jazz up their wardrobes or buy made-in-France gifts for their loved ones.

I love visiting Rennes and its quirky medieval architecture, and I would recommend anyone visiting Brittany to put the city on their bucket list. From Rennes, you can easily take the train to Morlaix, a picturesque town on Brittany’s northern coast. I recommend reading this article about the Bay of Morlaix for unique things to see in the area.

15 Best Things to Do in Rennes (France)

Rennes polls well in lists of France’s most liveable cities, which comes as no shock: The city is flush with green space, conserves its history with care and has the attractions of a big city on a  walkable scale.

There are 90 historic monuments in the old centre, where imposing 18th-century mansions are side-by-side with medieval timber-framed houses.

You may also notice Rennes’ youthful feel, and this is because more than a quarter of its 207,000 residents are students.

There’s vibrant nightlife, superlative cultural attractions and one of France’s top weekly markets in the Place des Lices every Saturday morning.

Lets explore the best things to do in Rennes :

1. Old Rennes

Rue de la Psalette

Rennes was almost completely razed by a great fire in 1720, which explains why there are so many dignified late-18th-century houses in the city.

But around the cathedral is a web of streets where half-timbered houses survive.

Rue de la Psalette and Rue du Chapitre have endearingly warped corbelled houses that hang right over the little cobblestone streets.

Stop for a moment to appreciate the centuries-old carvings on their timbers.

Also on Rue du Chapitre is Hôtel de Blossac, dating to 1728 and one of the finest neoclassical homes built after the fire.

These are private apartments now but you can enter the courtyard in front to get a better view of this magnificent mansion.

2. Parc du Thabor

Parc du Thabor

On the highest hill in the city, Parc du Thabor is ten hectares of the most sublime gardens you may ever see.

If you need convincing, just picture the rose gardens in summer, where more than 2,000 varieties bloom each year.

Up to the Revolution the garden belonged to the Abbey of Sainte-Melanie, just outside Rennes walls, and was tended by the monks.

In the 19th century it was landscaped by the master gardener Eugène Bühler, who added the French parterre and English gardens.

Maintaining the many flowerbeds in a park is no mean feat: In two five-week periods every year some 60,000 plants are replanted by the team of gardeners.

3. Palais du Parlement de Bretagne

Palais du Parlement de Bretagne

After the Union of Brittany and France in 1532 Rennes’ importance increased almost overnight and it became the home of one of France’s 17 regional governments.

This added prestige and drew the aristocracy, imbuing the city with mansions and a stately ambience it still has today.

The Palais du Parlement was started in 1618 but wouldn’t be completed for another century.

Despite suffering a fire in 1994 the interior is richly decorated: The Grand’Chambre avoided any damage and is a sumptuous hall with a gilded coffered ceiling that was transported from workshops in Paris to Rennes by timber raft in the 1650s.

4. Musée des Beaux-Arts

Musée des Beaux-Arts

Like many French regional museums, Rennes’ Musée des Beaux-Arts opened just after the Revolution with works seized from religious buildings and stately homes in the area.

Among these were the collections of the18th-century historian Christophe-Paul de Robien, who had some exquisite Egyptian, Greek, Etruscan and Roman artefacts, still on show today.

The art galleries span the 1300s to the present day, with an emphasis on the 17th-century baroque.

From this period you can check out pieces by Georges de la Tour, Maarten van Heemskerck and Rubens, or fast-forward to the late-19th century represented by Sisley, Boudin and Gauguin.

Finally there’s a trove of drawings by history’s masters like Donatello, Albrecht Dürer, Michelangelo, Rembrandt and Leonardo da Vinci.

5. Écomusée du Pays de Rennes

Écomusée du Pays de Rennes

On the southern fringes of the city is a preserved historic farm, presenting five centuries of Breton agricultural heritage.

On the property are typical arable crops, fruit orchards, a kitchen garden, beehives and all the farmyard animals.

This livestock is strictly from Breton breeds, such as  Froment du Léon and Bretonne Pie Noir cows.

The wonderful farmhouse building dates to 1500 and its exhibits are set across three floors.

The tour tracks the development of farming in the region with tableaus, historic machinery, interactive games and documentary films.

6. Parc des Gayeulles

Parc des Gayeulles

Spreading out across a large chunk of northeastern Rennes, Parc de Gayeulles is a way of getting out into nature without having to travel beyond Rennes’ N136 ring road.

If you’re a runner and don’t want to miss a workout while visiting the city you couldn’t pick a better place than these hundred acres of green fields and woodland.

There are abundant facilities too, like campsites, an indoor skating rink, a zoo with cows, donkeys and horses,  as well five lakes, one of which has pedal boats and a bar-restaurant on the shore.

7. Les Champs Libres

Les Champs Libres

This innovative cultural centre in the heart of Rennes took 13 years to complete between 1993 and 2006, and was designed by the architect Christian Portzamparc.

The project combined the Museum of Brittany with the city’s new library and science centre, and will fascinate any connoisseurs of urban design.

It’s intriguing to see how the three elements fit into one another and combine to create an exhibition space on the ground floor.

We’ll visit the Brittany Museum later, but the Science Centre is worth your time with a planetarium that seats 96 people and has a screen 14 metres wide.

8. Marché des Lices

Marché des Lices

For a mid-sized city Rennes has more than its fair share of markets, counting 20 in total.

But the daddy of them all takes place on Place des Lices on Saturday mornings.

This market has been a Rennes institution since 1622 and is the third-largest in the country, with 300 producers, traders and artisans.

There’s no excuse: If you’re thinking of a weekend picnic or are staying at a holiday rental, it would be a sin not to do your shopping here.

In the covered Halles Martenot there are 40 butchers alone, and outside you’ve got flower stalls, bakers, cheese sellers and artisans making Breton specialty foods.

This is also where you can get some proper Breton snacks, like the galette-saucisse, a sausage wrapped in a buckwheat crêpe and best washed down with local cider.

9. Rennes Cathedral

Rennes Cathedral

The city’s cathedral, with its sober neoclassical facade, isn’t the most beautiful in France, but it has an absorbing story to tell.

It has been the site of the city’s cathedral since the 500s, but the one built in the 1100s collapsed in stages between 1490 and 1754, when it was decided to tear down almost everything and start again.

Now the interior is a radiant extravaganza of gilding and frescoes, which seem to cover every inch of the church, including the long cylindrical vault in the nave.

The Grand Organ is from 1874 and was built by Aristide Cavaillé-Coll, France’s 19th-century organ-maker par excellence.

10. Opéra de Rennes

Opéra de Rennes

The city’s opera hall stands resplendent on Place de la Mairie, facing off against Rennes’ equally striking 18th-century baroque city hall.

The opera is from 1836 and labelled as a French “monument historique”, with a hall painted in the early 20th century by the brilliant painter Jean-Julian Lemordant who was then blinded in the First World War.

If you fancy seeing a performance it’s worth planning ahead as the opera has close to 100% attendance.

It also reaches out to new fans by holding open days that let you watch rehearsals and take part in workshops.

There are also guided tours on special heritage days, twice a year.

11. Parc Oberthür

Parc Oberthür

Another green sanctuary in the middle of Rennes was a private park landscaped in the 18th-century for François-Charles Oberthür, founder of the Oberthür printing house.

It measures more than three hectares, so it’s astonishing to think that it remained private until as late as 1960. There’s woodland with sequoias, cedars, beech trees, oaks and limes, and beautifully cared-for lawns edged by paths.

There’s also a large ornamental pond with ducks, turtles and carp.

12. Porte Mordelaise

Porte Mordelaise

Rennes’ city walls were torn down in stages between the 1600s and 1800s, but there are still compelling fragments to be discovered here and there.

The best of these is Porte Mordelaise, a 15th century gatehouse with a barbican and evidence of a drawbridge.

The gate was the main entranceway into the city and was where ceremonial processions would begin.

Above the arch is the coat of arms of the Dukes of Montfort, who ruled Brittany from the mid-14th century to the start of the 16th century.

13. Musée de Bretagne

Musée de Bretagne

Within the Champs Libres, this regional museum condenses Brittany’s thousands of years of human history and celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2016. The archaeological collections are actually far older and were expanded from a core of objects gathered by Christophe-Paul de Robien (mentioned above) in the 1700s.

There are more than 300,000 items in the museum’s collection now, with an astonishingly rich assortment of coins, numbering 35,000. The most enlightening pieces are those minted by the medieval Duchy of Brittany.

Elsewhere the museum’s is entertainingly varied, with an Iron Age statue, medieval manuscripts, Nazi paratrooper bicycles, all helping you unravel this region’s storied past .

14. Chapelle Saint-Yves

Chapelle Saint-Yves

One place to visit if you’d like to get informed about Rennes’ own past is the Chapelle Saint-Yves, a 15th-century hospice chapel belonging to a mission for the city’s poor following the ravages of the Breton War of Succession.

Today it’s actually Rennes’ Tourist Office, so you could of course drop in for maps and guides.

But in the old nave is the permanent exhibition, “Rennes, Ville d’Art et d’Histoire”, documenting the city’s awesome monuments with historic sketches, photographs and models, and filling you in on exciting facts that might have passed you by during your visits.

15. Day Trips

Mont Saint-Michel

There’s tons of inspiration if you want ideas for days out during your holiday in Rennes.

Mont Saint-Michel hardly needs an introduction, as one of France’s unmistakable pieces of heritage.

You can be at this medieval wonder in less than an hour.

Then you’ve got the port of Saint-Malo, a former haunt of pirates still fortified by its historic walls.

Or, away from the coast, La Roche-aux-Fées is a breeze in the car: It’s one of Brittany’s captivating Neolithic monuments, a passage grave configured as a corridor that aligns perfectly with the winter solstice sunrise.

Flavor flav taylor & billie earned clocks ... i'm earning my diploma, exclusive 96 3/16/2024 12:50 am pt.

Flavor Flav blessing Billie Eilish with a personalized clock chain on Oscars night was no PR stunt ... instead, the Public Enemy rapper tells us he wanted to crown her a winner, even if she didn't win the Academy Award.

TMZ Hip Hop linked up with Flav this week following his big night out on the town, post-Oscars ... where he was the life of the party per usual.

Waiting for your permission to load TikTok Post.

Flav absolutely floored Billie when he surprised her with a personalized Rock N Stones clock after the 22-year-old became the youngest 2x Oscar winner ... courtesy of her "Barbie" track, "What Was I Made For?" winning Best Original Song.

He calls Billie a generational talent and is proud to know her. Who knows, maybe they'll hit the studio one day???

Taylor Swift is also lucky enough to have a Flav clock in her possession -- he reserves them for the best of the best, and made sure TS got one at all costs!!!

Flav's saving some flowers for himself, too, as he'll be returning to reality TV this year to document himself earning his high school diploma!!!

Shout out to Adam Sandler ... his movie "Billy Madison" made it a gimmick, but Flav says he's never stopped dreaming of getting his diploma despite all his hip hop success and no, he won't settle for a GED.

And, watch out André 3000 , Flav's dropping an instrumental jazz album to give the field some competition!!!

Taylor Swift's Singapore leg spurs bad blood in SE Asia. Neighbors can't shake it off

HONG KONG — Pop star Taylor Swift is in Singapore this week, performing six sold-out shows in the city state. But the concerts — and what the government did to secure them — have sparked some bad blood between Singapore and neighboring Southeast Asian countries and territories.

Singapore this week confirmed it negotiated a deal with Swift's concert promoters, paying an undisclosed sum of money to ensure that Singapore was her only stop in the region.

Rumors of the exclusive deal had sparked outcry among Southeast Asian neighbors, with a Philippine lawmaker demanding an explanation, Thailand's prime minister claiming Singapore paid millions of dollars per concert for the deal, and Hong Kong's chief executive insisting his city was still an attractive destination for mega events.

Singapore's prime minister, Lee Hsien Loong, defended the exclusive deal at a press conference on Tuesday.

"A deal was reached. And so it has turned out to be a very successful arrangement. I don't see that as being unfriendly," he said at an Asian summit in Melbourne.

Lee added that an "incentive" had been paid for the deal. The Singapore Tourism Board declined to comment on the amount, citing business confidentiality. AEG Presents, Swift's concert promoter, did not respond to a request for comment.

Following Lee's remarks, Philippine lawmaker Joey Salceda told a local newspaper that Singapore was operating by "the law of the jungle" and not the law of a "neighborhood of countries bound by supposed principles of solidarity and consensus."

Singapore, Thailand and the Philippines typically enjoy smooth diplomatic relations. They are all members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, ASEAN , a regional economic and security bloc.

Underneath the heated rhetoric is a growing industry worth billions of dollars. Event tourism — like Swift's concerts — brings in a lot of money for cities. Research firm Business Markets Insights expects the Asia Pacific events market to grow to nearly 550 billion dollars by 2028.

Fans of singer Taylor Swift take pictures next to an installation in the "Eras Tour Trail" that depicts different eras of the pop star's career, at the Marina Bay Sands complex in Singapore, on Feb. 28. More than 300,000 Swifties from Singapore and neighboring countries will attend the U.S. superstar's six sold-out Eras Tour shows at the National Stadium from March 2-9.

"Event tourism is a key trend," said Erica Tay, an economist in Singapore with Malaysia-based Malayan Banking Berhad, or Maybank.

Younger travelers crave experiences, more than stuff, and are more likely to travel to a city to attend a concert or watch a sporting event, she said. "By hosting Taylor Swift and other A-list acts, I think Singapore is building its credentials to be an event tourism hub," she added.

Tay estimates Swift's concerts will bring in $370 million in tourism receipts to the country

in a little over a week, while the pop star is in town.

When nearby cities see the multimillion dollar boost they are missing out on, it prompts some soul searching.

Last month, Hong Kong's chief executive, John Lee, was asked by reporters about Singapore's efforts to get Swift, and whether Hong Kong is being ambitious enough when it comes to securing mega events.

"We know we'll be competing with different cities. And we'll ensure we're attractive enough and competitive enough," he said.

Until that happens, Hong Kong is losing out on fans spending big bucks to see performers like Coldplay , Ed Sheeran and now Taylor Swift — top acts that skipped Hong Kong, but played in Singapore.

Husband and wife Haseeb Khan and Audie Wibowo paid about $450 each for their Swift tickets, plus another $300 each for flights from Hong Kong. They plan to stay with family in Singapore.

Wibowo, a self-described long-time Swiftie, said she has never traveled so far for a music concert before, but was determined to go to one of Swift's Singapore shows.

"It is a big splurge, but it's kind of like birthday, Christmas, everything rolled into one," she said. "Better to have one big memory which will last forever."

Getting nearby Swifties to fly in and splurge on her concerts is exactly what Singapore officials wanted.

Beyond an economic boost, there's also the reputational lift Swift's presence brings.

"Her endorsement of Singapore, you know, will really put the country on the map for hundreds of millions of her fans," said Tay, the economist.

"It's hard to put a value on it, but I think it's really positive."

2024 Masters odds, field: Surprising PGA picks, predictions from top golf model that has hit 10 majors

Sportsline's proven model simulated the masters 2024 10,000 times and revealed its pga golf picks for augusta national.

national tours rennes

Augusta National Golf Club is the most iconic course in golf and will host the 2024 Masters beginning on Thursday, April 11. Jon Rahm is the defending champion after besting Brooks Koepka and Phil Mickelson by four shots to become the fourth Spanish player in history to don a green jacket. Now, he'll look to become the first player to defend the title since Tiger Woods did it in 2001 and 2002. Rahm is atop the 2024 Masters odds at 19-2 for the first major championship of the season. However, World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler and four-time major champion Rory McIlroy are the 15-2 co-favorites among the 2024 Masters contenders. Before locking in any 2024 Masters picks of your own, be sure to see the 2024 Masters golf predictions and projected leaderboard from the proven computer model at SportsLine .

SportsLine's proprietary model, built by DFS pro Mike McClure, has been red-hot since the PGA Tour resumed in June 2020. In fact, the model is up more than $9,000 on its best bets since the restart, nailing tournament after tournament.

McClure's model predicted Jon Rahm would finish on top of the leaderboard at the 2023 Sentry Tournament of Champions and The American Express. At the 2023 Masters, the model was all over Rahm's second career major victory heading into the weekend. Rahm was two strokes off the lead heading into the third round, but the model still projected him as the winner. It was the second straight Masters win for the model, which also nailed Scottie Scheffler's 2022 victory.

In addition, the model included Nick Taylor in its best bets to win the 2023 RBC Canadian Open. That bet hit at 70-1, and for the entire tournament, McClure's best bets returned nearly $1,900. McClure's best bets also included Jason Day (17-1) winning outright at the 2023 AT&T Byron Nelson and Rickie Fowler (14-1) finishing on top of the leaderboard at the 2023 Rocket Mortgage Classic.

This same model has also nailed a whopping 10 majors entering the weekend. Anyone who has followed it has seen massive returns.

Now that the Masters 2024 field is taking shape, SportsLine simulated the tournament 10,000 times, and the results were surprising. Head to SportsLine now to see the projected leaderboard.

Top 2024 Masters predictions

One major surprise the model is calling for at the 2024 Masters: Rory McIlroy, a four-time major champion and one of the co-favorites, fails to complete the career grand slam and barely cracks the top five at Augusta National. After a stretch of making five straight top-10s at the Masters from 2014 to 2018, McIlroy has been inconsistent. Over his last five appearances, he has more finishes outside the top 20 (three) than inside, and he's missed two cuts, including last year. He's failed to break par in seven of his last 12 rounds at Augusta National.

McIlroy's lack of precision off the tee has been a major reason for his struggles at not just the Masters, but at all majors recently, as it's been a decade since his last major championship victory. He's ranked outside the top 100 in driving accuracy percentage the last seven seasons, with his rank of 171st last year being his worst. His inaccuracy with an iron isn't making up for his driving struggles, as he ranked just 79th in greens in regulation a year ago. Given the current flaws in McIlroy's game, but having the shortest 2024 Masters odds, he's a name to steer clear of with your 2024 Masters picks, according to the model.

Another surprise: Xander Schauffele, a 28-1 longshot, makes a strong run at the title. He has a much better chance to win it all than his odds imply, so he's a target for anyone looking for a huge payday. No. 5 in the Official World Golf Ranking, Schauffele is already a seven-time winner on the PGA Tour and been in the hunt to win his first major regularly over the last several years.

Schauffele made the cut in 23 of his first 26 major championship starts with 19 top-25s, 11 top-10s and six top-five finishes to his credit. He was second at the Masters in 2019, third in 2021 and 10th last season. He has also finished in the top 20 in his last seven major starts.  See who else to pick here .

How to make 2024 Masters picks

The model is also targeting three other golfers with odds of 20-1 or longer to make a strong run at the green jacket. Anyone who backs these longshots could hit it big. You can only see the model's picks here .

Who will win the 2024 Masters, and which longshots will stun the golfing world? Check out the Masters 2024 odds below and then visit SportsLine to see the projected Masters leaderboard, all from the model that's nailed 10 golf majors, including last year's Masters and Open Championship .

  • JoyM900 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles An amazing tour guide in Kanab, Utah My husband and I were doing a canyon tour in Arizona and Utah. When we arrived in Kanab, Utah we wanted to visit the Peekaboo slot canyon, but knew we needed a guide due to the deep sand terrain. The Kanab Tour Company put us in touch with Trevor Lee for a 4 wheel drive razor tour to the canyon. We had never been on a razor before. Trevor patiently got us ready and explained how to use the vehicle in deep sand. He rode ahead of us at a comfortable pace until we reached the slot canyon. When we arrived he explained the geological features, history and the best way to capture pictures inside the canyon walls. He pointed out ancient foot paths up the walls and features inside the canyon that we would have missed without his guidance. When we finished the tour in the canyon, he asked us if we would like to drive further to see petroglyphs and other canyon features. Traveling and talking with Trevor was an educational and unforgetable experience. When the tour was over, he asked where we were traveling next. When we showed him our map, he suggested another more scenic route through the East entrance to Zion National Park and also to visit the Valley of Fire state park before going to the Las Vegas airport. We took his advice and had an amazing conclusion to our canyon tour. We would have missed those canyon experiences if he had not mentioned them. Trevor was not only interested in giving us the best tour of the Peekaboo slot canyon and its surroundings, he also wanted the rest of our trip to be filled with astonishing natural wonders. We would highly recommend Trevor for a knowledgeable an experienced tour guide. We have already recommended him to our friends who are interested in a similar trip. Read more Written January 7, 2024
